Runway 34 boasts of fine performances and a gripping first half.
Runway 34 Review {3.0/5} & Review Rating RUNWAY 34 is the story of a pilot facing a tough time. Captain Vikrant Khanna (Ajay Devgn) is a pilot working for Skyline airlines. On August 16, 2015, he is in Dubai and the next day, he is supposed to fly to Cochin, where he’s also based. Vikrant’s friend Sandy calls him to party at night. Vikrant refuses at first. But then, he gives in. He visits a…

Ram Setu, Thank God: Will Bollywood's Diwali releases create a dhamaka at the box office? - #BigStory
The festival of Diwali brings along a lot of cheer and like every business, even the film industry waits for a dhamaka with their festive releases. The past few months have not been great for Hindi movies and given the fact that none of the festive releases this year, be it Heropanti 2, Runway 34, or Laal Singh Chaddha, Rakshabandhan, have performed upto the mark. All eyes are now on the two Diwali releases — Ajay Devgn, Siddharth Malhotra and Rakul Preet starrer Thank God, and Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandes and Nushrratt Bharuccha starrer Ram Setu — to work their magic at the ticket windows.
If we look back at the performances of Bollywood’s Diwali release over the past decade, the collections have almost always been impressive. While Ra.One (2011) grossed about Rs 221 crore worldwide, Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) collected Rs 235 crore. In the same year, Son of Sardaar grossed Rs 163 crore despite a clash. The following year, Krissh 3 shattered records with a worldwide gross collection of about Rs 384 crore, which was soon broken by Happy New Year next year as the film collected Rs 385 crore. In 2015, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo collected Rs 395 crore which has been the highest for a Diwali release. In 2016, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil clashed with Shivaay. While ADHM collected Rs 229 crore, Shivaay ended up with Rs 124 crore. Golmaal Again (2017) earned Rs 311 crore while Thugs of Hindostan (2018) amassed Rs 320 crore despite poor reviews. 2019 releases Housefull 4, Made In China and Saand Ki Aankh registered collections of Rs 280 crore, Rs 12.78 crore and Rs 23.67 crore respectively. Diwali in 2020 saw films clashing on OTT due to the pandemic but the following year when theatres reopened, Sooryavanshi brought back festive cheer with a collection of about Rs 295 crore worldwide.
This year, both Thank God and Ram Setu have had their share of controversies ahead of their release, but yet the kind of buzz that Diwali releases create every year has been amiss. Besides there are some promising regional films like Gandhada Gudi, Sardar, Padavettu and Har Har Mahadev vying for the audiences’ attention. Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam has also hit the screens this week and there is massive buzz around it already. Amidst all the noise, will Bollywood be able to revive its magic? Will Ram Setu and Thank God create a Diwali dhamaka at the box office?
In today’s #BigStory, we reached out to filmmakers and trade analysts to find out. Read on.
Thank God vs Ram Setu
While the advance bookings for Thank God and Ram Setu look neck-to-neck, trade circuit predicts the collections may not be that impressive as other Diwali releases. Film distributor and analyst Raj Bansal has his doubts. “There is no excitement around both the films and the audience have not been going to the theatres like they used to. The content of the films is a big factor. It’s always the family entertainment films that work on Diwali. So out of the two, I feel Thank God will take over Ram Setu,” he says.

Raymond James Goes Bargain Hunting; Offers 3 Stocks to Buy
Now that the second quarter earnings are mostly in, we can sift through the result to find stocks that are primed for gains in the second half.
In a note from Raymond James, strategist Tavis McCourt has stared the sorting process. McCourt introduces the firm’s picks, noting: “We highlight… stocks/subject areas where stock reactions ran materially counter to Raymond James analyst opinion during 2Q21 earnings season so far. We suspect these names are a good hunting ground for further study as August slows down.”
A look into the TipRanks database shows us that these are Buy-rated stocks, with average upside between 30% and 55% over the coming year. The Raymond James analysts see them gaining at least 50%. Let’s find out why they believe these are compelling buys.
Ping Identity (PING)
The first Raymond James pick we’re looking at is software maker Ping Identity. Ping offers identity management and access management software products, a vital need in the digital world where online access needs to be verified and controlled to close out security risks. The company has global reach, with offices in Boston, Austin, and Denver, as well as London, Paris, Bangalore, and Tokyo. The company has been in business since 2002, and went public two years ago.
In the last couple of months, Ping has announced an expansion of its services – and its own addition as a service provider to the Department of Homeland Security.
The expansion came through the June acquisition of SecuredTouch, a fraud and bot detection platform. The acquisition puts SecuredTouch’s capabilities into Ping’s cloud offerings. And in July, two of Ping’s Identity and Access Management solutions were added to Homeland’s approved products list for continuous diagnostics and mitigation. The addition of Ping to this list brings additional exposure to the company, and puts it in position for Federal contracts.
Earlier this month, Ping reported $78.9 million in total revenue for Q2, up 34% year-over-year. Of that total, 93% was subscription based. The key metric of annual recurring revenue grew to $279.6 million, a yoy gain of 19%. The company’s cash flow for the first half of the year more than doubled yoy, from $21.2 million to $44 million.
Story continues
And this brings us to the Raymond James. Analyst Adam Tindle tells investors to bust out the popcorn because Ping’s ‘movie is getting good,’
“2Q results… continued a pattern of incremental acceleration in 1) new ARR growth (refutes notion that new cloud products hitting in earnest during 4Q20 are late to market/won’t resonate), and 2) net dollar retention (refutes notion that customers are leaving the platform for something more innovative). Ping founder/ CEO Andre Durand has described the Ping story to us as a “movie” in which believers will do well over the long haul, and we’re encouraged by this current scene,” Tindle wrote.
“In fact,” the analyst added, “new ARR reached record levels as large, long term, strategic deals are accelerating, and these reference customer examples should provide runway to accelerate the flywheel of new customer acquisition.”
To this end, Tindle rates Ping a Strong Buy, and his $42 price target indicates high levels of confidence – and ~73% one-year upside potential. (To watch Tindle’s track record, click here)
Among Tindle’s colleagues, rating wise, the bulls are slightly in front. PING’s Moderate Buy consensus rating is based on 6 Buys and 4 Holds. PING shares are priced at $24.31 with an average target of $33.56, suggesting ~38% upside in the next 12 months. (See PING stock analysis on TipRanks)
Dine Brands Global (DIN)
Next up is Dine Brands, a holding company best known for its two restaurant chains, International House of Pancakes and Appleby’s. Between the two, Dine has some 3,500 restaurants in 16 countries; there are still a few company owned locations, but the overwhelming majority are owned by approximately 350 franchisees.
The company has been regaining revenue as economic restrictions lift, and Dine reported 99% of its restaurants were open in Q2. In the US, same-restaurant sales increased 102% yoy for Appleby’s, and 120% for IHOP. The company’s earnings rebounded from a net EPS loss of $8.33 in 2Q20 to a net profit of $1.69 in 2Q21. At the same time, Dine’s cash flow has surged; in 1H21, the company reported $106 million in cash from operations, compared to just $10.5 million one year earlier.
Turning to the Raymond James review, we check in with restaurant industry analyst Brian Vaccaro, who writes: “…our analysis of third-party data suggests Applebee’s sales (vs. 2019) remain strong while IHOP has likely accelerated and turned positive in July (consistent with broader family dining segment trends). The company is generating strong FCF with a growing unrestricted cash balance (+$75M sequentially to $183M), which should support resuming a meaningful dividend/ share repo later this year (assuming COVID visibility improves).”
Vaccaro puts an Outperform (i.e. Buy) rating on DIN shares, and his $115 target price suggests room for ~51% share appreciation over the coming year. (To watch Vaccaro’s track record, click here)
This stock, based on two popular restaurant chains, gets a unanimous Strong Buy rating from the analyst consensus, based on 4 positive reviews from Wall Street. The stock is trading for $75.95 with an average target of $109.40, which implies a one-year upside of 44%. (See DIN stock analysis on TipRanks)
Bloomin’ Brands (BLMN)
Last but not least is Bloomin’ Brands, the parent company of the Aussie-themed Outback Steakhouse. The company also owns Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Bonefish Grill and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar. Overall, Bloomin’ boasts over 1,450 restaurants in 47 states, along with Puerto Rico and Guam. Internationally, Bloomin’ operates in 20 countries. While most locations are company-owned, some are franchised.
Bloomin’s recent history has been typical of the restaurant industry in general – the company saw steep losses in the first half of last year, but has bounced back strongly this year as the COVID restrictions were eased up. A clear sign of that is the Q2 EPS, which at 75 cents per share was the highest in more than two years – and a far turnaround from the $1.05 per-share loss posted in the year-ago quarter.
In other Q2 results, Bloomin’ reported year-over-year comp sales growth of 65.8% in Outback’s US locations, and more importantly, the comp sales were more than 11% higher than 2019. The total company revenues for the quarter hit $1.077 billion. That top line represents an 86% gain over last year’s second quarter.
This company has drawn attention from Raymond James’s Brian Vaccaro (stated above). The analyst rates BLMN a Strong Buy and sets a price target of $37.50, implying a one-year upside potential of ~50%.
“We confidently reiterate our Strong Buy rating on BLMN following the company’s strong 2Q results and underlying margin fundamentals. Sales remain > 10% above 2019 levels with strengthening dine-in sales partially offset by moderating off premise… we see strong upside to 3Q EBITDA guidance even layering in modestly higher food/labor inflation vs. 1H. We also believe the company’s significant FCF and B/S de-leveraging underway is under-appreciated by investors, a key third leg of our “higher quality business in a post-COVID world” thesis,” Vaccaro wrote.
Once again, we’re looking at a stock with a Strong Buy consensus rating, so Vaccaro is hardly an outlier about Outback. There have been 8 recent reviews, which break down 6 to 2 in favor of Buy versus Hold. The average price target of $33 suggests ~30% upside this year from the trading price of $25.33. Seth Rogen Wants Donald Trump Out of Office So Badly That He’s Taken to DMing His Son
Seth Rogen hopes Donald Trump Jr. checks his Twitter direct messages. (Photo: Getty Images)
Seth Rogen has started his own grassroots campaign to get Donald Trump out of the White House — and it revolves around sending Twitter direct messages to the politico’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.
The Neighbors 2 star, 34, realized that Junior is following him on the social site, so he sent him a series of direct messages. The first one was sent Thursday during the reality star turned president’s bizarre press conference. He posted a screenshot of it with the caption, “Let’s see if this works!”
“Hey man! It’s Seth,” the message began. “Your father is trying to discredit our media, collude with Russia, and destroy the environment. It would be super cool of you to be like, ‘yo, dad, why don’t you stop all this and go back to being just a guy on TV. The majority of the world would be pretty psyched. Thanks!!!”
Let's see if this works! pic.twitter.com/q5b3d8U4Nx
— Seth Rogen (@Sethrogen) February 16, 2017
A few hours later he shared another screenshot of additional messages, writing, “Sliding into your DMS like…” There is a partial message, apparently he sent at least three, and a full one below that.
Sliding in to your DMs like: pic.twitter.com/zsUT4e2CnG
— Seth Rogen (@Sethrogen) February 16, 2017
“Hey man. I don’t mean to come across as a weird or anything,” the comedic actor wrote in another one. “I just realized I could message you so I thought I would. So, maybe, ask your dad to investigate if his campaign was in talks with Russia leading up to the election? Or maybe just have someone investigate Flynn’s ties to Russia? Or maybe just ask your dad to go back to hosting game shows? I bet he would prefer that. He doesn’t seem to like this. Thanks dude! Peace!!”
He also posted this regular tweet in hopes of catching Don’s eye:
Yo! @DonaldJTrumpJr! I noticed you follow me on Twitter. Please ask your dad to resign before he destroys the planet. Thanks dude.
— Seth Rogen (@Sethrogen) February 16, 2017
The scion has yet to respond publicly, but he’s a little busier these days controversially running the Trump empire while his dad is running the free world. (Though he does seem to have time to involve himself in bizarre bed pillow decorations.)
Anyone think Vanessa will buy it if I tell her I did this all by my self for her on #valentines day? ????????#valentinesday #romance
A post shared by Donald Trump Jr. (@donaldjtrumpjr) on Feb 14, 2017 at 1:08pm PST
But back to Rogen… the actor, who was a Hillary Clinton supporter, frequently shares his opinions about politics on Twitter.
Does this dude not know that they literally just saw him in court? https://t.co/lT1tQv323O
— Seth Rogen (@Sethrogen) February 9, 2017
And has been known to send tweets in Trump’s direction.
His recent jab at #fakenews was pretty funny.
Any negative reviews to my movies are #FakeReviews.
— Seth Rogen (@Sethrogen) February 6, 2017
Trump isn’t his only target. This tweet, posted after Ben Carson’s holocaust comments, also generated headlines.
Rogen was also recently at the Women’s March in New Orleans.
I'm proud to be at the #WomensMarch in New Orleans, one of the greatest cities in the world. pic.twitter.com/jneG6F1EcY
— Seth Rogen (@Sethrogen) January 21, 2017
Despite all his political posts, last year Rogen talked about how he needs to stay out of the fray, reasoning that he won’t be able to really sway anyone with his opinions.
“I listened to a thing on NPR that basically explained that it’s impossible to change people’s minds, and that in order to actually change someone’s mind they have to spend like half an hour in person with someone who is personally affected by whatever the specific issue is that they have an issue with,” he told the Daily Beast. “And since I read that, I’ve thought, I can never change people’s minds! … And so I’ve kind of stopped talking about politics because I’m kind of wasting my breath. I’m not going to change anyone’s mind. I’m either going to reaffirm people’s beliefs who already believe something or I’m going to antagonize people who disagree with me. So I just kind of quietly sit and watch.”
Perhaps he will find success with his new sit and Twitter DM approach. We’ll see.

Ten of the 34 shows that opened on Broadway during the 2018-2019 season began life Off-Broadway. I was struck by how sharply different my reactions were to seeing the Off-Broadway and Broadway versions of four of these shows – Be More Chill, Hadestown, Oklahoma, and What The Constitution Means to Me. This was true even though all four were considered transfers, with little change in the casts and no change in the creative teams. The biggest change in some of these was the context — and that could make all the difference.
Boys in the Band, Off-Broadway, 1968
Suddenly dancing The Madison in The Boys in the Band: Robin De Jesus, Michael Benjamin Washington, Andrew Rannells, Jim Parsons (There’s a similarly memorable moment of a dance break in “Straight White Men”)
Now, the significance of a Broadway run was surely greatest this season in the play “The Boys in the Band,” which had debuted Off-Broadway in 1968, and had been produced around the world ever since, but had never been on Broadway. The Broadway debut production on the play’s 50th anniversary offered a symbolic importance that was as much political and aesthetic. Though many feel the script is dated — the characters stereotypes of unhappy homosexuals – the production was a celebration of how far we’d come. All nine actors were openly gay men, as were the director Joe Mantello and all five producers including Ryan Murphy (creator of such TV series as Glee,American Horror Story, and Feud). Several were famous—TV stars (Parsons of The Big Bang Theory, Matt Bomer of White Collar), movie stars (Quinto of the Star Trek films), Broadway stars (Andrew Rannells of Book of Mormon, Hamilton.) These good-looking, successful, popular out gay actors weren’t so much re-creating gay history, or even honoring gay history, when they portrayed these brittle homosexual characters from the past. By their very participation in this production, they were making history.
“Straight White Men” Written and Directed by Young Jean Lee Public Theater New York, N.Y. November 6, 2014
Stephen Payne, Josh Charles, Armie Hammer, and Paul Schneider in Straight White Men, Broadway 2018
Given how vibrant the work that is produced Off Broadway, Off Off Broadway and in regional theaters, it’s easy to argue that making it to Broadway should mean less than it used to. But Broadway still carries an emotional weight for theater people. How else to explain, for example, the Broadway debuts this season of such downtown avant-garde artists as Taylor Mac (Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus) and Young Jean Lee, whose Straight White Menearlier this season came some four years after the play debuted Off-Broadwayat the Public Theater.
Damon Daunno and band, Oklahoma, St. Ann’s warehouse, 2018
Oklahoma, Broadway 2019
Avant garde artists’ dreams of mainstream success can work in the audience’s favor. Exhibit A for me is director Daniel Fish’s dark production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma. When I saw it Off-Broadway at St. Ann’s Warehouse last October, I found its reliance on too many familiar avant garde devices tiresome and annoying. I felt it lost sight of a theater maker’s basic compact with the audience. “In its effort to make the environment feel authentic, the show suggests low-budget community theater as much as small town community gathering: The folding wooden chairs are physically uncomfortable, and the seating on either side of a long narrow stage (which looks like a fashion runway, except it’s made out of unfinished wood) nearly guarantees obstructed views at various times for a large portion of the audience. The director’s commitment to naturalism sometimes comes at the expense of audibility. Whole scenes unfold in complete darkness.”
Six months later, on Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theater, I was pleasantly surprised to discover comfortable seats and decent sightlines. Was the bigger theater more able to accommodate the set without sacrificing comfort and accessibility, or did the producers put the pressure on the creative team to accommodate the more demanding (and higher paying) Broadway theatergoers?
They also now give the playbill to you before the show begins, rather than after it is over, as at St. Ann’s — an affectation that to me epitomized the gratuitous efforts to be au courant.
There are still plenty of what I consider avant garde affectations in Fish’s Oklahoma. Many were toned down, and there are enough adjustments for the balance to have shifted for me. I could better enjoy Rodgers and Hammerstein’s score and the performances by a diverse and talented cast, and better appreciate Fish’s take on the world of the musical.
Be More Chill, Off Broadway 2018
Be More Chill, Broadway, 2019
The changes in two of the other transfers were less tangible, but they had the opposite effect on me.
When “Be More Chill” made it to Off-Broadway, the odyssey of the musical felt as engaging as anything in the show itself. A short run to mixed reviews in a New Jersey theater resulted in an original cast album that went viral, creating a whole nation of teenage fans for this high energy adaptation of a popular young adult novel that combines high school bestiary with sci-fi. The transfer to Broadway marks the Broadway debut of talented songwriter Joe Iconis, and incorporates changes that reflects an obviously bigger budget – more, fancier stage effects. But the biggest change is its new context. The show has gone from a theater with fewer than 300 seats to one with more than 900, and ticket prices as high as $325. It no longer feels like the little show that could. It’s a noisy, high-powered commercial enterprise, selling itself largely to kids. So, what exactly are they selling?
Curious, I read the original novel by Ned Vizzini, and was taken aback by a couple of the changes in the stage adaptation. In the musical, Jeremy is reluctant to join the cast of the school play, saying “ It’s a sign-up sheet for getting called gay.” But in the original novel by Ned Vizzini, Jeremy is a theater kid who has performed frequently in high school productions. Shouldn’t Broadway be the one place where young gay theatergoers don’t have to feel left out and put down?
What The Constitution Means to Me, 2018
What the Constitution Means to Me, Broadway 2019
When I saw “What The Constitution Means to Me” Off-Broadway, I found Heidi Schreck’s show about the United States Constitution extraordinary — funny and infuriated, analytical and confessional, erudite and heartbreaking. Schreck, who plays herself at age 15 competing in oratorical contests about the Constitution, and then herself at her current age, is a good storyteller. Her play is informative, enlightening even, inspiring me to re-read the U.S. Constitution (copies of which are distributed during the show.) It also has some important, justifiably angry points to make about the Court-sanctioned subjugation of women. Yet, in retrospect, what was most powerful about Schreck’s play was similar to the pull two decades ago of Anne Nelson’s “The Guys,” which was presented at The Flea Theater not far from the World Trade Center right after 9/11. “What’s The Constitution Means to Me” has allowed people to gather communally in a time of crisis. The crisis this time is not a foreign invasion, but what the theatergoers drawn to this show see as a domestic threat to democracy.
There are few discernible changes to Schreck’s play, which has the feel of spontaneous improv but is actually carefully scripted. While other critics have reacted ecstatically to Schreck’s piece both on and Off Broadway, I have mixed feelings about the transfer of this straightforward, three-character play to Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theater, where there are three times as many seats as Off-Broadway, and ticket prices are more than 70 percent higher. Instead of one producer, there are now more than a dozen. “What The Constitution Means to Me” can still serve as a salve for the politically shell-shocked and disaffected; they just have to be a little richer, which kind of undermines “we’re all in this together” vibe for me.
Hadestown Off-Broadway 2016
Amber Gray Patrick Page Reeve Carney on Broadway 2019
Hadestown was a very different show when it debuted at a reconfigured New York Theater Workshop in 2016. Just eight cast members brought Anais Mitchell’s concept album to life, performing in the sung-through musical all along the dimly lit spaces in front of stadium seating that evoked the rings of Hell
Three years later, after a run at The National Theater in London, Hadestown is now on Broadway, with an expanded cast of 13, and elaborate choreography for them. Only two cast members of whom are holdovers from the original eight, Gone is the reconfigured theater. The show plays out on Walter Kerr’s proscenium stage, and now features all sorts of stage effects, from stage smoke to a working steam whistle to a few surprise alterations of the set that are obviously the fruit of a bigger Broadway budget.
Some of the intimacy is lost. But there is now a sharper clarity to the tale, in large part because of the expansion of the role of Hermes as narrator, now performed by André De Shields. (There is also a note in the program explaining, “Who’s Who in Greek Mythology,” which is helpful in a show that still focuses more on atmosphere than plot.)
What made Hadestown most thrilling remains – the delightful score.
In the case of Hadestown, then, Broadway neither ruined nor redeemed an Off-Broadway show. It created something that’s different, adjusting to the new context and changed expectations, and in its own way just as good.
Are Off Broadway Shows Redeemed or Ruined on Broadway? Ten of the 34 shows that opened on Broadway during the 2018-2019 season began life Off-Broadway. I was struck by how sharply different my reactions were to seeing the Off-Broadway and Broadway versions of four of these shows – Be More Chill, Hadestown, Oklahoma, and What The Constitution Means to Me.

Flight: PR115
Route: SFO-MNL
Equipment: Airbus A34-300 (ex-IB)
Cabin: Business Class
Seat: 4H, 4K
Background
Even though I recently reviewed Philippine Airlines’ (PAL) business class on some of their intra-asia routes, it’s been a long time since I last flew PAL on a long haul flight. Actually if memory serves me, the last time was when I was 12 years old on PR104 from Manila to San Francisco. Needless to say, I was really looking forward to flying long haul with them again after all these years. I happened to come across a good fare between San Francisco and Hong Kong via Manila on PAL and booked it at the last minute.
During certain peak months, PAL operates 2 flights to Manila from San Francisco. Flight PR105 is on their newer Boeing 777-300ER fleet, while the flight we were on was flight PR115, which is operated by an ex-Iberia A340-300. PAL’s A340s are slated to be retired soon and are slowly being replaced by the A330 and A350, so the avgeek in me decided to try it out the product before it goes away.
Our flight was scheduled to depart at 12:45am, while the 777 flight was scheduled only 10 minutes before us at 12:35am. We arrived at the airport at 10:30pm to give ourselves enough time for check-in and security formalities, and we also wanted to checkout PAL’s Mabuhay Lounge at SFO.
Check-in
There was a long backup of cars as we approached the international terminal at SFO, as several trans-pacific flights were scheduled to depart all around the same time. Tip: If you don’t mind walking a little, you can get dropped off on the other end of the international terminal (G) to avoid the congestion. Since PAL scheduled two widebody planes to depart within 10 minutes of each other, you can imagine the economy class queue at the check-in counters were massive. The business class queue wasn’t too bad, though. We waited for about 5 minutes before we were helped by Nelda, a friendly check-in agent.
Nelda swiped our passports and printed our boarding passes all the way to Hong Kong. We were advised that flights from the US now arrive at NAIA Terminal 1 and we will need to approach the transfer desk and take a shuttle bus to Terminal 2 to catch our connection. She also asked if we had any check-in baggage, which we answered “no” to. She seemed baffled and asked us why we didn’t have anything to check. I just answered that we travel light.
As some of you might know, a lot of Filipinos flying to the Philippines often bring pasalubong or presents to their loved-ones back home. Filipinos are also known for having big (and extended) families in the Philippines, which means a lot of presents to bring home. Many Filipino passengers opt to bring two 20″ x 20″ x 20″ balikbayan boxes instead of luggage to check in order to maximize on weight and space.
With our boarding passes in hand, we headed for airport security which had a HUGE line. Thankfully since PAL now participates in the TSA-Precheck program. There was a separate line for Precheck and we didn’t have to wait long to get through.
The Lounge
After clearing security, we turned left and followed the signs to the Mabuhay Lounge which is one level above departures.
Upon arriving at the lounge, a friendly lounge attendant checked us in and allowed us entry into the… Standing Room Only lounge! The Mabuhay lounge is probably the smallest lounge we’ve been to at SFO. The lounge felt very claustrophobic and virtually all the seats were taken.
Since we couldn’t take a seat, we decided to check out their buffet spread to find some assorted sandwiches, BBQ chicken wings, meatballs, and smoked salmon on sliced baguette. There were also some chips, fruit cups, and chocolate cupcakes on the spread. To the side was a beverage cooler with a selection of canned sodas, juices, and a few bottled beers. The back wall of the food area was a self-serve bar with about a dozen liquor selection and a soup warmer, in which they were serving clam chowder at the time. There was also a microwave, a coffee pot, and instant cup noodles were available. The spread was decent enough compared to some US carrier lounges, but none of the food offerings looked appealing to me at the time so I just took a bottle water.
Eventually, a couple of seats opened up and we sat down for about an hour or so while waiting for boarding to be announced. We also bumped into one of my good friends and chatted a bit.
Some people say that PAL means “Plane Always Late”, and unfortunately both PAL flights this evening were delayed. Boarding was announced around 12:25am for a new departure time of 1:15am, while PR104 (the earlier flight on the 777) was delayed for about an hour at 1:30am.
Boarding
We started our walk to gate A4, which was only a 5 minute walk from the lounge.
I decided to take a few shots of the 2 PAL widebodies right next to each other before taking the escalator down to the gate area.
Boarding promptly started as we arrived at the gate. Business Class and Mabuhay Miles elite members had priority access and we were boarded by no other than Nelda, our friendly check-in agent. She even asked if we were able to find the lounge, and we nodded.
The Flight
The entered the plane via door 1L, and were greeted by Racquel, the purser on this flight. We were directed to cross the galley and turn right into the main business class cabin.
PAL has 34 business class seats on the A340-300, which are configured in a 2-2-2 configuration.
We were seated in 4H and 4K, the last row of seats in the main business class cabin.
there is also a mini business class cabin with 2 additional rows of seats behind the galley.
Waiting at our seats were a full size pillow, duvet, amenity kit, slippers, and business class menu.
Sadly there isn’t much storage around the seat other than the seat pocket and the narrow side groove under the center arm rest. This plane being an ex-Iberia plane had an old IFE sytem installed, which was not operational. Instead, the crew distributed iPad Minis and some cheap flimsy headset to all business class passengers (I used my own). There were about a dozen or so new Hollywood movies, and a few classics. Local, Asian, and American TV shows, music, and a handful of games were also loaded onto the iPad. You can also stream the same media content via WiFi when connecting to the myPAL access point using your smartphone. Sadly, no in-flight internet access was available on this flight.
After stowing our carry ons and settling in, a male flight attendant offered us pre-departure beverages and hot towels.
A few minutes later, Athena the other flight attendant working our aisle introduced herself. She then took our drinks and meal orders and asked if we would like to be woken up for the pre-landing meal service, in which we answered yes to.
Boarding was complete around 1:15am and the doors were closed soon after. The Captain soon made his announcements on the PA system and gave us a flight time of 13 hours and 25 minutes to Manila. We left the gate promptly at 1:18am making our flight 33 minutes behind scheduled.
During taxi, Racquel the flight purser addressed us by name and introduced herself. She gave us an updated arrival time of about 6:20am local time and thanked us for flying with them. We had a long taxi to the end of runway 28R and took off at 1:58am. Since this was an A340, we had a long takeoff roll and gradual climb.
Supper Meal Service
The initial ascent was mostly smooth and 10 minutes after takeoff, the seatbelt sign was turned off and the cabin crew sprung into action. Athena came by with a tray of amuse bouche. Then a few minutes later, she returned with the champagne bottle and flutes and proceeded to hand pour the champagne at our tables.
About 15 minutes later, the meal service started with white linen being placed on our tables, and the table settings came soon after.
For starters, I ordered the cream of tomato soup with chickpeas. It was served piping hot, and it was delicious.
My companion ordered the smoked salmon salad with scallops. I had a few bites of it, and it was pretty good.
For my main entrée, I ordered the Filipino pork adobo with brown rice. The meat was surprisingly tender and the rice was cooked well. It was very flavorful, although I wished they gave me a little more meat.
Meanwhile, my companion ordered the alimango (crab) cakes with chili sauce and rice.
For dessert, we both had a cup of Häagen-Dazs ice cream. My companion and I were betting that the ice cream would be hard as a brick, as we’ve had on some flights. We were both proven wrong as the ice cream was perfectly scoopable.
The Lav and Bed
At this point, I was already exhausted so I visited the lavatory to freshen up before bed.
The business class lavatory was really nothing to write home about. It was small, though it had some basic amenities like a L’Occitane handwash, lotion, and mouthwash.
I went back to my seat and converted it into a bed. The bed was angled flat, but thankfully the angle was only slight and I didn’t slide down. The full size pillow had good support and the duvet was very good quality. It actually reminded me of Qatar Airways’ new duvet.
I slept for a good 7 hours and woke up with about 3 hours before landing in Manila. I took a peek outside to watch the sunrise.
Pre-landing (breakfast) Meal Service
2 hours before landing, the cabin lights were turned on and the meal service started.
The crew started with a hot towel service.
Then came the drink cart, in which we ordered apple and orange juice. I also picked up a few snacks from the snack basket near the galley.
Soon Athena came by to set our tables. Warm breads were also offered and I chose the banana nut bread.
The meal started with a choice of cheese and cold cuts or assorted fruits. We chose the fruits.
We were also offered tea or coffee, and I happily obliged.
For the main, I ordered the beef tenderloin kabobs with rice and egg (tapsilog).
My companion opted for the bangus (milkfish) with java rice and scrambled eggs (bansilog).
I’m not sure if I’m just biased since I’m Filipino, but I thought both of the meals were delicious and very filling.
Arrival
The Captain soon announced our initial descent into Manila and mentioned that there’s some congestion on the ground, so we would be in a holding pattern for another 20 minutes.
The cabin crew started their pre-arrival preparations and asked if we needed anything else. The iPads were also collected soon after.
Racquel came by again, addressed us by name, and thanked us for flying Philippine Airlines.
20 minutes later, were on our final approach and had a smooth landing in Manila.
We taxied for a few minutes before arriving at Terminal 1 (the old terminal building).
Deplaning only took a few minutes and we were in the terminal soon after.
Transit in Manila
Upon disembarking, we looked for the transit desk which is right before immigration.
We approached the desk and a friendly agent assisted us. We mentioned that we just arrived on PR115 and that were transiting to another Philippine Airlines flight. The agent asked for our continuing boarding passes and asked us to take a seat.
We were soon escorted through transit security. Our luggage were x-rayed and we had to go through another metal detector, then we walked up some stairs up to the departure level. Our escort walked us over to the end of the concourse where we took another escalator down, and then another to the bus gates.
We boarded the bus and it was a good 5-10 minute ride over to NAIA Terminal 2.
We soon entered the terminal building and approached the transit desk right by the entrance for our gate assignments. We went up a flight of stairs, and we were back in the departure area. We walked over to the Mabuhay Lounge to enjoy a cup of PAL’s arroz caldo and get ready for our next flight.
The total transit time from NAIA Terminal 1 to terminal 2 was about 40 minutes, so give yourself enough time for transit formalities. I was actually dreading having to transit in Manila, but it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. It actually felt more like transiting through London’s Heathrow Airport, just a lot less efficient.
Thoughts
Overall I thought Philippine Airlines excelled in the soft product and catering department. The in-flight service was very good. The Philippine Airlines cabin crew weren’t as polished compared to crews from the likes of Singapore Airlines or Cathay Pacific, but the service was warm, attentive, and we felt that the crew were very eager to please. I loved that meal trays were not used for the meal service, and instead the dishes were placed on directly on the white linen.
The food quality and taste was also superb. I was happy to see that they had a Western, Asian, and Filipino selection for each of the meals. The portions could use some work, as the pork adobo I ordered on the first meal literally had only 3 small pieces of pork in it…pretty skimpy.
Now for the hard product:
Seat comfort, privacy, and storage on PAL’s aging Airbus A340 was pretty bad. While there was plenty of legroom to stretch out, the angled flat seat isn’t the best to sleep on especially for a 13 hour flight. There is almost zero privacy, except for a small divider in between the seats. The lack of storage area also meant we had to constantly get up to open the overhead bins to get our stuff. There were also no air vents on this plane. The installed IFE monitor and remote on the seat were both non-operational (as expected). The iPad solution was OK, but the cheap and flimsy headphones they gave out was probably the worst headphones I’ve used in business class.
As I mentioned above, PAL is retiring their A340s soon and replacing them with a much modern fleet, so seat comfort and in-flight amenities should get better soon. We actually had a much better hard product experience on the return flight on PAL’s Boeing 777-300ER (stay tuned for the trip report).
The full size pillow and thick duvet were very nice and made sleeping a lot more bearable on the angle flat seat. The L’Occitane amenity kit and slippers were also a nice touch…no pajamas though ;).
Ground Experience:
I think this is where PAL needs work. The check-in experience was friendly, quick and non-eventful, except if you’re flying in economy and have to go through the very long queue. The Mabuhay Lounge at SFO is in dire need of an overhaul. The lounge felt cramped and needs a better seating arrangement. It was too crowded and there was literally nowhere to sit when we arrived. The bathrooms are all single stall and there were always people lined up by the food area to use the bathroom.
Food selection at the lounge was OK, but could use more hot food items considering PAL operates 2 flights at SFO every other day. And why serve clam chowder when you can serve PAL’s signature Arroz Caldo at the lounge?
PAL They should take a few cues from CX and check their lounge just down the hall.
Our flight was slightly delayed, but boarding procedures were efficient and we were able to board quickly.
Transfer in Manila took a while as MNL airport was scattered and inefficient. We were lucky we had 4 hours to connect in Manila so we weren’t worried, but I can imagine those with much shorter connection times would not be as as fortunate.
Bottom Line:
Would I fly PAL again? Absolutely! They have a long ways to go to catch up to their Asian and Middle Eastern competitors, but I can totally see the potential for them to excel in the business. They were just upgraded by Skytrax to be a 4 star airline, so things are looking up. I’d like to personally thank Athena and Racquel for taking good care of us during the flight.
Keep it up, PAL, keep it up!
(Note: As with all trip reports on travelingfoody.com, this flight was not subsidized by the airline. All flights and accommodations were paid for by us.)
