Elder Scrolls Online: Eveline Valencourt
Tumblr media
Breton | Daggerfall Covenant | Magicka Warden
Eveline Valencourt harbored grand dreams that soared far beyond the confines of her impoverished upbringing. The daughter of a minor Breton noble and his housemaid, Eveline’s existence was a product of a forbidden affair that was shrouded in secrecy and scandal. Driven by a hunger for power, Eveline’s father deftly navigated political intrigue in his quest for social advancement. Eveline’s mother, however, was raised on tales of romantic, dashing heroes and longed for her own fairy-tale ending.
Cast out by her lover after learning she was with child, Eveline’s mother sought refuge among an ancient order of Druids, finding solace among the people of the forest. Growing up amidst the tranquil beauty of the forest, Eveline found solace in the art of storytelling, weaving tales of daring adventure and dashing heroes to entertain her fellow Druids. Yet, even as she reveled in the magic of her own imagination, Eveline couldn't help but feel the pull of the outside world. Inspired by the tales of bards and troubadours that drifted through the forest like whispers in the wind, Eveline yearned to step onto the grand stage of the world and share her stories with a wider audience. Her longing for the finer things—exquisite dresses, dazzling jewelry, and the devotion of adoring crowds—was not merely a desire for material wealth, but a symbol of her aspirations to transcend her humble beginnings and make her mark upon the world.
Eveline's relentless pursuit of her dreams eventually led her to join a troupe of traveling performers, where her charismatic presence and boundless creativity endeared her to fans far and wide. Under the spotlight, she dazzled with her performances, earning accolades and adoration wherever she roamed. Yet, just as she seemed destined to ascend to ever greater heights, disaster struck with devastating swiftness. Without warning, Eveline found herself stripped of her creative inspiration, her once-vibrant imagination reduced to a barren wasteland devoid of inspiration or passion. Desperate and despondent, she teetered on the brink of despair, her dreams crumbling to dust before her very eyes.
In her darkest hour, fate intervened in the form of a chance encounter with a wandering adventurer whose tales reignited the spark of inspiration within her soul. Reinvigorated and emboldened by newfound purpose, Eveline resolved to set forth on a solitary journey across the vast expanse of Tamriel, determined to seek out new stories and experiences that would reignite the flames of her creativity. Armed with nothing but her indomitable spirit and boundless curiosity, Eveline ventured forth into the unknown, her heart ablaze with the promise of adventure and the tantalizing prospect of discovering the tales that would define her legacy for generations to come.

Eveline Gallo -- Witcher
Tumblr media
NAME: Eveline Gallo, The Ermine RACE: Elf (Aen Seidhe) PROFESSION: Thief
Eveline Gallo is an elven acrobat in the Falling Stars' Wandering Circus, specializing in rhythmic gymnastics and tight-rope walking. She is not above a bit of thievery.
To rob a vault, one must force open armor-plated doors and secret away mounds of loot. First and foremost, however, one needs to get inside the building containing said vault. To accomplish this, Geralt could use the help of a certain Eveline Gallo – a circus performer famed through all the North, and who, it seemed, used her considerable talents for less law-abiding purposes as well…
As is often the case in life, Eveline was willing to help, but only in exchange for a favor: the witcher had to save her circus troupe from humiliation. He duly performed the required feat, and the limber elfess then joined the break-in crew.
Eveline Gallo performed as tasked and guided Geralt and his accomplices into the auction house. Yet as soon as the heist stopped going according to plan and Redanian soldiers surrounded the auction house, she shimmied up and out the chimney and was never seen by Geralt again.

Hello :o
I just wanted to say thank you (and also thank crumb) for getting me back into thinking about Karl Heisenberg 24/7.
I really love your artstyle, from the amazing expressions (especially the peeved/angry ones) to the scribbly lineart. As someone that’s trying to learn to draw more digitally, I really like to observe your stuff o.o
Your Moldy Family comics are funny, cozy, sweet and comforting all at the same time, and they made me discover and appreciate Eveline (oh man I love how much of a goth tween she is), and the way you draw Heisenberg (his physicality if that makes sense, his clothes, his hair, his everything) is just *chef’s kiss*.
As a former Greek Mythology child, that AU is so so nice owagh. I love all the monster adaptations/designs, it’s all so clever: I love that Kyril is scaley, hairy AND has wings (which I feel aren’t depicted often nowadays with gorgons), Alina is so majestic, with the black tipped limbs and the blood soaked dress, and the daughters being harpies/sirens(?) is also so perfect.
Idk if you’ve already said it, but what is it about Karl’s character that made him interesting to you?
I hope it makes sense (I’m a bit tired) and thank you again for the excellent food :]
Thank you so much!!!<<<3333
Tumblr media
he lives in my head rent free…. his crusty-ass hair and barrel-shaped bod gets me every time
im glad you like my scribbly lineart! I tend to get concerned whether it really looks like anything haha
I miss drawing the mold family but i think my forte has always been fantasy, especially cause i love mythology more than anything. That’s not to say i wont go back to the modern mold family though
For greek au karl i wanted him to look like someone had haphazardly stuck animal parts to him so it’d look deliberately unnatural for him to have a relatively normal human body under all that-
I’m not sure i can fully describe why Karl is so interesting. Surface level, being voiced by Neil Newbon is always a big plus and his face model Joel Hicks is awesome-looking. His character design matches his abilities and personality really well, and speaking of personality, queer-coded villains who make a big show out of everything are always going to be my favourite. His gritty, masculine aesthetic is really inspiring in terms of gender as well. On a deeper level, in spite of all the terrible things he’s done, i find him sympathetic and relatable. After decades spent in a highly dysfunctional family, not living on his own terms, completely alone, I need him to finally be okay and get better for his own sake, with the support of people he trusts. It’s the same reason i love Eveline. Morally dark-grey characters who deserved better and could’ve gotten better with a good support system.

truly hope this doesnt sound accusatory and obviously you dont have to answer but what about dubcon/noncon appeals to you? i like dubcon/noncon with male characters but i find it hard to enjoy it if the subject being fucked is female. maybe thats bc im a woman myself. what are your thoughts on this?
choosing to take you in good faith here since you admit to liking a flavor of it yourself. liking something in a form that is totally removed from yourself but not one you could relate to is imo very normal. i don't have thoughts on that in particular but i can talk about why i play in the space of consent the way i do.
mostly i find it appealing in the sense that it's ultimately just dom/sub dynamics made literal within a narrative. i talked a bit of a circle around it in previous essays but i mostly just don't want to deal with the necessaries of consent and pre-discussion and planning when it's much faster to get to the good rough sex if you skip it. like i drew eveline getting gangbanged by goblins because a chick getting gangbanged by goblins is hot, and since i find domination, surrender, and punishment hot, it's hotter if the circumstance is because they "won" and she "lost" and not "they agreed to get together and do this in the woods". then again it's eveline and she'd probably be into that, maybe they did. but in general that's the appeal.
for me it 100% goes back to playing hentai games where your "punishment" for failure was a sexy little loop of your character getting fucked. sure your little avatar might not have "wanted" to get fucked in the fiction of the situation, but she's only getting fucked because you put her in the circumstance, to watch her get fucked. is that not what all fictional porn is, ultimately. putting people in circumstances where sex happens? the chique series and the bad endings of You're a Mage on Monsterfuck Mountain are based entirely on the appeal of that kind of game--you're only in the circumstance to get fucked because you went there. you made a mistake, you "lost", so your little character gets fucked. eveline should have traveled with her dragon husband but didn't, and as a result she got goblin gangbanged. she made a mistake, she "lost".
but other than that, it's essentially just cutting out the middleman of bdsm and going straight to the fantasy existing in the head of the participants. i believe the example i gave in one of my essays was a modern couple pretending to be a dungeon master/prisoner and playing with whips and getting horny, vs an Actual dungeon master whipping an Actual criminal and getting horny. it's the same thing. one just has fewer steps.
and i just like the visual aesthetics of bondage and helplessness and those things go hand in hand

It's hard to choose one wip to ask but, may I know about UnTitled Venture: Village Of Shadows (Resident Evil Village)?
This particular WIP is part of my prequel saga for The UnTitledverse, called The UnTitled Ventures saga.
UnTitled Venture: Village Of Shadows is the third installment of the saga and follows the events of Resident Evil Village. It is still early in WIP but I have a rough idea where I want to take it. Though this isn't set in stone, things might change.
Shortly after the events of UnTitled Venture: Evil Residence (canonically Resident Evil Biohazard), 35-year-old Joaquin Lockwood unfortunately drew the short straw in fate between his small family (which only includes Eveline and his dead best friend/partner's daughter, Elise) and the Winters when being forced by the BSAA, Umbrella and his old pals from Taskforce ECHO in relocating.
So he gets sent to Romania with a regular three-year-old and a BOW ten-year-old while Ethan and Mia go to Hungary. So close and yet so far.
Unfortunately Joaquin and Ethan can't continue their vitriolic bromance that started at the Baker's home anymore so they do so long distance. Sometimes they even visit one another.
Fun fact! Joaquin shares the "godparent of Rose" title with Chris Redfield, which is most definitely not due to the lack of either Ethan's or Mia's families being alive or that interested in their married lives.
Anyway, both Joaquin and Ethan are fungi bros, and are very aware of this considering last time Joaquin checked, he saw Ethan die in the Baker's home and proceeded to be killed afterwards so that's more or less a secret they keep from the BSAA and continue to support one another through their fungus troubles (it's like, "you died in the house, I died in the house, Eveline gave us a miraculous recovery... let's tell no one else about this").
Four years later in February 2021, Joaquin is turning 39, Eveline is 14 and Elise is six turning seven in September.
On the drive home from the Winter's house, Joaquin and his kids' car is hit by wild Mother Miranda and stuck in a ditch, knocking Joaquin unconscious and chasing after Eveline as the young teen runs off into the woods with Elise.
Why would Miranda do this? Because Rose is safe in Hungary and Joaquin's got Mold in him, so its only logical that Elise would too right?
By the time Joaquin wakes up, its still snowing, so he crawls out of the wreckage, takes a duffel bag, and follows after the trail... or more he follows the voice of the fungi screaming from within him to go towards the Village that is going to kick his ass for teaching the Romanian Mold his Aussie words.
He'll be able to call Ethan at the most inconvenient times to his own expense and explain the situation he's gotten himself in, and while Ethan goes prepare a drive to Romania while getting Chris, his BSAA team and Taskforce ECHO together to save his brother from another mother, Joaquin goes to search for his girls in the village, and learns empathy, gets chased by wolfman, loses his dominant hand, becomes best buds with the Duke for giving him a neat prosthetic, appreciates the unnecessary and unhelpful aesthetic of having cool shades in a dark snowy climate, is forced to have tea with the Lords and manages to hate someone more than he does Madame Callaghan.
Overall, its a wonderful family experience that no one with more than three braincells should have to go through.
That's all I got.

Love Is Love
A 2023 L.G.B.T+ Aesthetic Collection
Day 16 • Lucas Baker is Bisexual!
Day 15 • Day 17
👇🏽 Pride Headcanons Below! 👇🏽
💗•💜•💙
Oh boy, if you thought Jack would come down hard on Zoe for being a lesbian, that would be NOTHING compared to the shit he would do to Lucas. He's already threatening to throw Lucas out of the house for the smallest of things, Lord knows how he would react he found out that Lucas found some men attractive. It's for this reason that absolutely no one knows his sexuality (except for Zoe, who caught him watching gay porn one time and never let him forget it).
Speaking of, I'd LIKE to say that Lucas found out he was bisexual in a really unique and beautiful way (such as him swooning over some southern man from New Orleans and having a forbidden romance like Romeo and Juliet) but nope. It was because PornHub recommended Lucas a video with two guys and two girls in it one time and, because he liked one of female pornstars, he watched it and had to deal with some really uncomfortable feelings afterwards.
As a general rule, Lucas likes women more than men, but he is NOT PICKY. He would honestly take anyone who wanted him (because he knows he'd be the hassle of the relationship and that he'd be damn lucky to end up with someone). He does have a few types though; The overarching themes are people that are lithe/underweight (you know, people Lucas might actually have a chance to beat in a fight if push came to shove) and people that are witty/intelligent (aka someone who won't get offended by his dark humor and who can throw it back at him in an interesting way). Celebrity crushes include Kurt Cobain and Nicole Dollananager.
Internally homophobic. Lucas does NOT like being bisexual and often views it as just one more thing that's wrong with him. He knows that if word got out that he even slightly liked men, the neighbors and townsfolk of Dulvey would tear him limb from limb. He's already on the church's shit list; He doesn't need all his old classmates (who used to bully the shit out of him) to start spreading rumors that Satan fucks him up the ass. Zoe told him once that he's ridiculously paranoid to which Lucas responded with a, "Shut the fuck up Zoe," and locked himself in the barn for almost a week. When he came out, the entire farm was rigged with security cameras and Zoe just shook her head because deep, deep down... She understood his fears because they mirrored her own. The South is not kind to the LGBTQ sometimes...
In a perfect world, with no Eveline and no murderous tendencies, Lucas and Clancy would've be great as a couple. Someone had to fucking say it and I'm not ashamed that it's me ☺️
If Lucas had to pick a song to describe his sexuality, he'd pick: All In the Family by Korn

Tale as old as time. Day 5. Healing
Pairing: Morpheus x FairyReader
Rating: PG
Words: 2400
Notes: Aesthetic is not mine, but I found it fits
Tumblr media
This night I saw that man again. This time he was in a cell. And I supposed I should thank the story Morpheus told me. But I still felt lonely. In the morning I found a long green dress with a long dress train. It was a nice dress. Mother would approve of it. Then I saw a bouquet of beautiful flowers. Morpheus was trying. I hope he felt well. As usual, I heard knocking on the door. I opened the door myself. “Hello, Lucienne”, I said. “Good morning, my lady”, she said. “You looked beautiful as always. Did you sleep well? Do you like your new dress”. “Thank you”, I replied with a smile. “Everything is well. How is lord Morpheus?” “He is better, lady Eveline”, Lucienne replied. “I thought perhaps you want to have breakfast with him?” “I would like to”, I said. “But what about him?” “He doesn’t mind”, she paused and then continues. “I dare to say he enjoys his company. But he doesn’t know how to express his emotions”. “I’m glad to hear it”, I admitted. “Then are you ready to go?” she asked. I nodded and followed her to Morpheus’ room. He was sitting already on the bed and dressed only in some black robe that reminds me of the smoke. I still saw a lot of his white skin. It doesn’t bother me. Some fairies don’t like clothes too. “Good morning”, I smiled, when he looked at me. “How do you feel, lord Morpheus?” “Better”, he replied. “Thank you”. “Will you allow me to check your wound after breakfast?” I asked. “I will”, he replied in his short answers. “Does the Lord of Dreams need to sleep?” I asked when we started our meal. “Not necessary”, he replied. “But I can sleep and rest to regain my strength”. “Do you see dreams or nightmares?” I asked. There came silence. I thought he doesn’t want to answer, but then he speaks. “Sometimes”, he said. “But my subjects wouldn’t bother me on their own will”. “Do you see my dreams?” I asked. “Why do you ask?” he replied. “Some nightmare is bothering you?” “Not a nightmare, no”, I said. “It’s nothing important”. “I can see dreams, but it takes effort to separate alone dream”, Morpheus answered after a minute. “And I try not to watch dreams of those who are close to me”. “Oh, alright”, I answered. “You can tell me if nightmares will bother you”, he said.
“Thank you, lord Morpheus”, I smiled. “You can call me just Morpheus”, he replied. “We are engaged. It would be right”. “Then you can call me Eveline”, I said. “Maybe, if you feel well, you can join me on the walk? Later that day”. “It would be my pleasure”, he almost smiled. He was surprisingly gentle and polite when he wasn’t angry. But I can understand why he was so angry because of his statement. “You are a powerful being”, I admitted. “Can you take off this curse?” “I’ve already tried”, he answered. “Turned out to be I can’t break the curse of…another powerful being”. “Another being?” I asked. “Do you know who cursed you?” “I have my thoughts”, he said carefully. “Tell me”, I said. “Please, I want to help”. “I need to have proof first”, he sighed. “And then I will tell you”. It was reasonable. We can’t accuse other gods or creatures without proof. So I agreed. He relaxed a little. “Do you like my gifts?” Morpheus asked finally. “Flowers and dresses?” I asked and smiled. “Yes, thank you very much”. “I’m glad”, he nodded. “And I promised not t unleash my anger on you. You are not guilty of this curse”. After breakfast, Morpheus apologized and disappeared to work in the Waking world of people. I was left alone again or so I think so. “Hello, princess”, Matthew joined me in the garden. “Hello, Matthew”, I smiled to him. “Your relationship with the boss is better now”, he admitted. “I hope so”, I noticed. “But he can be unpredictable”. “Yes, he is”, the bird chuckled. “We are all grateful that you decided to stay after this accident”. “I can be endangered you”, I sighed. “Boss won’t allow anything bad to happen”, the raven replied. “He can be a Nightmare, but he still has his power”. “That’s good”, I smiled. “I’m glad that he is not injured hard. I wanted to help but I almost made everything worse”. “In your defense, anyone gets scared by a boss’ demeanor”, he admitted. “The ruler of nightmares and all this stuff”. “And a nightmare he became”, I said thoughtfully. “Perhaps, it was what someone was thinking of him. What if he offended someone and that is the repayment?” “Matthew?” I asked, not sure if the raven is still there. “Yeah?” he answered. “Did Morpheus offend someone recently?” I asked. “As far as I know he has a lot of…misunderstandings with a lot of creatures and people”, he replied. “Boss has a difficult character”. “Yes, I noticed that”, I said. “But it won’t make it easier to figure out who is standing behind this curse. And he doesn’t want to tell me about his suspicious”. “He needs time”, said the raven vaguely. “Does the curse have a time limit?” I asked. “I read that sometimes it must be broken during a certain period”. “I heard something about one month”, he replied. “It’s less already”. “One month… and it has been started just before my arrival”, I said. “It’s concerning. I have a bad feeling about it”. “So am I”, Matthew said. “Someone should be offended so much”, I remarked. “What are you going to do now?” he asked.
“I’m going to gather information”, I said, “Gladly, our relation with Morpheus improved. Maybe, he will tell me later what happened”. “So you are not going home”, he admitted. “Not now”, I smiled. “That’s good news”, he said. “Boss will be glad”. “I know”, I admitted.
Later that day I heard knocking at the door when I was reading in my room. Of course, it was Lucienne. I was surprised. “Lord Morpheus said you wanted a walk with him”, he said. “I need to lead you to the throne room to meet him”. “Oh, very well”, I smiled. “Then lead me”. “I’m so glad that you stayed, my lady”, she said. “So I heard”, I nodded. “I’m not my mother. She would leave on the first day and leave him in the Hell”. “Queen Tytania is ruthless”, said Lucienne. “She said that queen should be ruthless”, I replied. “Lord Morpheus also should be ruthless sometimes”, she said. “Without some rules and decisions dreams and nightmares can consume him or the universe will collapse. But he doesn’t like it”. “Really?” I asked. “No, once upon a time he has to finish someone’s life or the universe would die”, Lucienne replied. “He doesn’t want to, he befriended her until he couldn’t buy any more time. Until it was almost too late”. “Oh, that must be terrible”, I sighed. “Yes, it damaged his soul”, she sighed too. “He always does what should be done, but it makes his damage as well”. Finally, we got the throne room. The king of nightmares was already there, waiting. It was weird seeing his scary figure in the light of the day. “I’m ready to fulfill my promise, Eveline”, he said. “I’m glad”, I smiled. “How do you feel? How are your wounds?” “I’ll be fine”, he replied. “Thank you, Lucienne. You can go”. And I heard the footsteps of the librarian. I was no longer afraid of Morpheus. And I wasn’t angry with him. I felt curiosity. “I don’t remember when the last time I show someone the Dreaming was”, he admitted and gave me a hand. I took it and we walked through the castle and to the garden. I want to ask did he show it to his past lovers but changed my mind. “I didn’t think you would want my company when I. In this. Form”, he admitted. “You surprised me, Eveline”. “Yes, my mother always says it too”, I replied. There came silence. I started to think that their relationship wasn’t good. Or they don’t end well at all. “She thinks a kindness is a weakness”, I said. “I can believe it”, he replied. “She would leave me there”. “I’m not here”, I said. “I can see it”, Morpheus replied. “That is why you stay? Is it an act of kindness?” It seemed to me that he was offended by a thought. I didn’t find it offensive, but perhaps he understood wrong. “No”, I said. “I indented to stay unless you want to scare me one more time. But now I know your form and it won’t be easy”. He chuckled. He wasn’t cold anymore.
“You’re fearless, princess”, he noticed. “Good to hear”, I smiled. “I understood that your…outburst of anger on the first day was connected to your statement. But please, don’t shout at me since I’m not the one, who cursed you. I’m trying to help”. “I understand”, he sighed. “I will try. To hold my temper”. “Thank you”, I smiled. “And I will try to help you”. “You can. Perhaps. By staying”, he said suddenly. “Really?” I surprised. “Yes”, he nodded. “I will make my amends. For how I treated you in the begging. There can’t be forgiveness for me”. “I have already forgiven you”, I smiled. “Just don’t repeat this behavior, please. I like being here. Your realm reminds me of mine, and not at the same time”. “It should feel like home”, he nodded. “Like shelter”. “It is”, I smiled again. “And your…subjects are nice to me”. “I’m glad”, he said with relief. Silence. I started to worry, that he disappeared without warning, but then he spoke again. “I wish the Dreaming become a home for you if you…want to stay longer than one month”, Morpheus said. “Thank you”, I felt warm. He can be charming. “You can do whatever you like here”, he continued. “Only you shouldn’t touch that flower. It is very fragile”. “I got it”, I smiled. “It’s important to you, isn’t it?” “Yes”, he nodded. “I won’t let anyone touch it”. “I won’t”, I said. “Now, if you excuse me, I need to make some things done”, he said. “Of course”, I replied and he went away. I couldn’t keep him from his work. I continue to walk around. Suddenly I saw a new view. A small house full of flowers. I smiled. I was sure that Morpheus made it to please me. And it worked. I gladly went there.
I returned to the castle when the sun began to set down. The flower house was wonderful. He knew what I love. “Are you alright, lady Eveline?” I heard Lucienne’s voice. “Yes”, I answered. “Why shouldn’t I be?” “You were away for a long time”, she said. “Lord Morpheus made me a gift and I enjoyed it”, I smiled. “I’m happy to hear it”, Lucienne replied with relief. “Are you looking for me to tell you about dinner?” I asked. “I hope, Morpheus will join me. I would want it”. “You are right”, I heard a smile in her voice. “The dinner is soon. And lord Morpheus promised to join you”. “Good”, I smiled. “I want to thank him for the gift”. “Lord Morpheus is an attentive lover”, she mentioned. I blushed at the thought. I didn’t think about it yet. But I will someday if I stay as his fiancée and his queen. “I’m sorry”, said Lucienne. “I misstep”. “Everything is alright”, I said. “Don’t worry”. “Do you like him?” she asked. “I don’t know, he is a charming companion and suitor”, I replied. “But it is too early to tell”. “I understand”, she said and doesn’t ask anything anymore. And then she left near the dining room. Everything so changed since I was there the last time. But this time Morpheus was waiting for me without darkness.
“Thank you for the gift”, I smiled and sat. “It is beautiful”. “I’m glad you like it”, he nodded. “It was very thoughtful and sweet of you”, I said. “What brings joy to you?” “I didn’t think about it”, he replied. “Your company for now”. I blushed. He is trying to make it work between us. Or is he like me? “You can every dream make true”, I said. “I can”, he replied and started to eat. “I’m lord of Dreams”. I started too. I noticed that shyness wasn’t his best feature. But his was more than god. It can be understood. And I was glad that he listened to me. “Why do you want me to fulfill the arrangement?” I asked. “Because I liked you”, he replied honestly. I blushed again. Mother always said that I’m beautiful. But I didn’t expect to take the attention of the Lord of the Dreams, who must saw many beautiful women. “I’m flattered”, I smiled. “I’m flattered too, that you agreed”, he smirked. He made it on purpose. He made me blush again. “So what is our plan?” I asked. “You said you wanted to break the curse”, Morpheus said. “Yes, but you didn’t give me any clues”, I admitted. “Don’t you want the curse to be broken? I’m pretty sure your subjects don’t want to be invisible too”. “It’s not that simple”, he said. “I told you, I will tell you when I’m sure”. “Very well”, I said. “Can I ask you a question?” “Yes”, he nodded. “Have you visited the world of people recently?” I asked carefully. “In this form”. “No”, Morpheus sighed. “Turned out I can’t change it anywhere”. “Oh, so now you are visiting people only in dreams”, I admitted. “Yes”, he said. The rest of the evening we were talking about dreams and the human world. I have never been in the human world. “Perhaps, you wouldn’t find it interesting”, he admitted. “Why not?” I smiled. “Humans don’t believe in magic and fairies anymore”, Morpheus said. “Perhaps, that’s the reason why fairies don’t want to show up there anymore”, I admitted. “Mother told me something about it”. “Perhaps”, he nodded. Soon the dinner was over and I admitted that it was a good day. I enjoyed Morpheus’ company and hoped that the next day will be the same. “You need to rest”, he said. “Maybe”, I said. “Have you enjoyed this day?” he asked when he wanted to take me to my room. “I enjoyed it very much”, I smiled. “Thank you. Will you keep me company tomorrow?” “If you want to”, Morpheus also almost smiled. “I want to”, I replied. “Then see you tomorrow, Eveline”, he answered. “Good night, Morpheus”, I smiled again and entered my room. This time I was falling asleep with a smile.

bought and started playing Cloudpunk because i wanted to watch a video essay on it and honestly, from the video title and based on the person that made the video, i don't know what i was expecting the game to be but i don't know why i didn't expect it to be a "existential dread under capitalism" simulator, this is simply too fucking much. like the game (so far) has some really good fucking writing and really good fucking pacing and really good fucking voice acting and a gorgeous world and great design and aesthetics but like my brain is simply shutting off trying to think about the implications like it's too much. talked to Teko and my brain just switched off trying to think about the implications. talked to Eveline and my brain started to think about the implications and i completely zoned out (not really but my brain was almost static at that point although i clapped when she said "don't tell me how to label myself"). rn i'm only a few deliveries in, i just gave Never-Slow Joe his drive converter and the moral dilemma the game presented was simply too much so i am. done for the day. that is a problem for another day.

On Resident Evil 7
So in the interests of completionism, and because I am now officially that invested in the Winters family saga, I bought and played Resident Evil 7.
Tumblr media
It was, as expected, much more survival-horror than RE8. Aiming is slower, ammo scarcer, inventory space even more limited, and enemies that much more bullet-sponge-y. It is also absolutely scarier – both in the tension-and-gore sense, and in the horrible-things-happening-to-normal-nice-people sense (which gets to me far worse). But then, slasher horror is generally much less my thing, so as much as I absolutely appreciate the work that went into building this game’s aesthetic and villains, it’s just not so much an experience for me as the high gothic horror of RE8.
Where finishing RE8 had me racing back to explore new difficulties, DLC and challenge modes, I just didn’t have the same drive to spend more time in the world and gameplay of RE7. As far as I’ve come in this genre, my stomach can only take so much before it all just becomes a bit unpleasant. This is not a fault of the game: I can fully sympathise with anyone who loved RE7 and was disappointed RE8 strayed so far in new directions – it’s just a very different experience.
That said, the two games do share more than you might think.
Tumblr media
Both have their extended spooky openings to build atmosphere before the actual danger starts, punctuated by a big moment where someone Ethan trusted apparently turns on him to horrific effect, and where Mia apparently ‘dies’ (but not really). Then there’s a big cutscene where you meet the family of bosses you’ll be dealing with, which Ethan spends restrained and/or tied to a chair. You’ll be helped in your quest to navigate each boss’s territory by a mysterious ally (Zoe/the Duke), though mostly just via advice. And in both games, the last member of the boss family you'll face is a greasy, showboating SOB* who delights in taunting Ethan over speakers and making him run or fight for his life, and who’s actually not as loyal to the alpha-villainess as she thinks.
Towards the end, you suddenly find yourself playing as that-traitor-from-the-start, who gets to use a machine gun. You'll also get your chance to stop by a lab to read some documents explaining WTF has really been going on all this time. Finally, you discover that the creepy old lady you’d been seeing around the place was really the final boss all along.
Tumblr media
We end with Chris Redfield and Mia in a helicopter, and the sinister insinuation that the company supplying all the guns and money to fix bio-terror outbreaks might actually be up to no good (that two different companies play this role in the two games isn’t really a sign of good continuity). The end, cue credits! (And remember to take a drink if any of this same stuff happens in RE9!)
But as much as RE7 has in common with its sequel on paper, I came away from it a lot less satisfied ‒ and not just because it's less my kind of game. Sure, the the final boss fight with Eveline has all the hallmarks of something completed at the last minute to meet a deadline – but the final Eveline section at least wraps up properly. The bigger problem is that by then, we’ve spent so much time setting up for a big boss fight with Lucas (psychotic Baker son, mad inventor and jigsaw-killer-wannabe) that never actually happens. Ethan escapes without ever actually facing Lucas directly.
We’re given so many reasons why Lucas should be a big deal: unlike his originally-nice-and-normal parents, Lucas was a killer long before being infected. He’s slipped Eveline’s control, and has even been working with the company that created her. But this last, potentially huge plot point really only exists as an excuse to have a few significant documents lying around for background on Eveline herself. Look, I did not even like this guy (I could not even get myself to play through the DLC he's in), and I still feel like he was done dirty.
Tumblr media
The boss fight with Lucas has instead been saved for Chris Redfield’s DLC chapter – but it doesn’t really deliver there either. There, Lucas is apparently selling research data to some sinister, unnamed party, but we never learn what or who – it’s a sequel hook the actual sequel had no interest in. Otherwise, he murders a few redshirts (because what’s Chris Redfield going to do with himself if he’s not losing people in the field?) then morphs into a utterly-generic big-mutant-monster for the boss fight. It’s all the kind of generic faff you could find in any RE game.
We do also learn that those Umbrella-branded helicopters are being run by a ‘new’ Umbrella that claims it’s reformed, and is trying to make up for the mistakes of the past by funding anti-bioterror operations, and that Chris is working for them despite not really trusting them… and now you know as much about the subject as you’ll learn in the whole DLC. More setup with no real payoff.
The other major plot point the game just leaves hanging is Mia. I love the big reveal that she used to work for the company that created Evaline, the whole section where you play as her – but it leaves so many more questions hanging. How did Mia end up working for such evil people? How did she justify it to herself for so long? Were blackmail or threats involved? And most of all, how’s Ethan going to react to finding out? He’s asking those questions out loud just a few scenes before the Mia reveal, and yet, the ending is in such a rush to tell us he’s happily starting over with Mia that it all falls through the cracks. (I mean, there’s some lovely horror potential in the idea of all those secrets still lurking under their relationship, but if that was the intent, it’s woefully underplayed.)
Tumblr media
Speaking of Mia, I do think the game could’ve stood to make it a lot more obvious a lot sooner that the Bakers are, y’know, not her real family. We don’t know jack about Mia going on, but Ethan should at least react when she starts talking about ‘Daddy’ – a line or two to the effect of, “What are you on about? Your Dad’s from Texas – I've met the guy!” or something would’ve gone a long way.
Zoe’s story is similarly done dirty by the ending: whether you save or abandon her, she just vanishes afterwards and is never mentioned again. Resolution has (again) been left for the DLC.
I did like Zoe’s prequel DLC: hot damn does it deliver on the story, atmosphere and horror (seriously, it delivers so hard on that last point that I do not think I could sit through it again). Seeing the Baker family as they used to be, pre-Evaline, just drives home the tragedy so much harder, and I love that Zoe got a little more time in the spotlight. But the “End of Zoe” DLC reduces her to a MacGuffin, with nothing more than a “and eventually Chris’ people find and cure her” tacked on at the end to wrap up her story. GDI, she deserves better!
Tumblr media
The big problem plaguing both Mia and Zoe is that I just don’t think the game’s big ‘choose who to save’ decision moment works: it just doesn’t pay off. Save Mia, and she and Ethan will get separated in the swamp, you’ll play through her flashback sequence, and she’ll be alive at the end. Save Zoe, and she’ll get nabbed by Eveline again anyway, and Mia will still wake up in the same place in the swamp for the same big flashback sequence. Sure, you’ll also have to fight and kill Mia when she becomes possessed again – but her death is given so little emotional weight that what’s the point? Either ending leaves us with all those loose threads and unfinished stories.
The whole issue is a pretty classic example of what I call the Schrodinger’s Character problem: if an NPC can be simultaneously alive or dead, then neither outcome can have any real impact on the plot. Our hapless NPC just has to sit in their box, somewhere out of the way (presumably in some state of awkward quantum superposition ‒ though hopefully they at least get to pet the cat). Similar problems can comes up in any branching narrative where the branching is more a gimmick than a feature. Sure, devs may intend to fully develop both possibilities, but that’s twice as much work as just ignoring any inconvenient differences, and thus the first thing to end up on the cutting room floor come crunch. And that’s never more glaring than when Schrodinger’s Character is the PC’s wife (or brother – Deus Ex was terrible this way too), and the game can’t even be arsed to give them a proper half-a-cutscene to grieve before putting them right back on the horse again. Nor is saving them all that much more satisfying when it makes so little difference.
Tumblr media
I also can’t help feeling RE7 really missed a trick with Zoe, when you finally see her face for the first time and she’s just… completely normal. Up to then, she’s been this mysterious voice on the phone who seems to know exactly what Ethan’s been doing at all times, but never intervenes in person. Add in the fact we know she’s infected, and it all feels like it’s building to a much bigger reveal, right? Like, that she’s mutated to the point Ethan’s liable to lose his shit if he runs into her without warning – or perhaps even semi-embedded in one of those mould-walls, where she’s able to feel what’s going on all over the house through the mycelium network. Or at least that she’s been holed up in some sort of underground surveillance bunker full of tinned beans and bottled water, physically unable to leave without Evaline getting her. There’s so much they could’ve done with the reveal!
To be clear, I don’t think the game’s failure to explain Zoe’s weirdness is a serious flaw: her phone calls are wonderfully creepy and effective, and that’s so much more important to horror than clear explanations. But not doing more with her still feels like a missed opportunity.
None of this is to say RE8’s ending was flawless by comparison: there are dangling questions and clunky sequel-hooks there too (what went wrong with the ceremony? Why were Miranda’s powers ‘leaving her’? Why are we suddenly teasing the idea the BSAA has gone bad when we haven't heard about them all game? etc). But the greater story felt finished to me in a way RE7 just didn’t. Plenty is left mysterious, but Ethan’s character arc is functionally complete.
On the whole though, there’s still plenty to recommend RE7 as an experience. The atmosphere was everything it needed to be, the old videos and creepy phone calls were solid little mechanics, and I kind of adored the design of Lucas’ horror-escape-room puzzle. I love the subtlety of burying an explanation for how Ethan's able to reattach his hand (and even his leg goddamnit I had no idea that was a thing that could happen until just recently!) in the middle of a document you won't pick up until the endgame, and which many will miss. Seriously, there is some great material in this game.
Tumblr media
The villains all live up to the enjoyably campy extremes of the RE series at its best – but it was Marguerite who stood out for me, and I think it’s a crying shame she’s mostly relegated to the middle-chapter between the big events that are Jack, Lucas and Eveline. Nothing against the rest of them, but creepy little girls, dominating father figures, and jigsaw-killer-wannabes are all a dime a dozen in this genre: how many gleefully-revolting, middle-aged mother figures can you think of? That’s rare enough to be really memorable.
Ethan is, unavoidably, a somewhat flatter character than he gets to be in RE8 – he just doesn’t get the opportunity to react to so many things he so obviously should, and that’s very much a script issue (his voice actor does a fine job with what he’s given). Even so, some of his snarky conversations with Zoe are a delight, as is every other time he gets to express his frustration with the whole mad situation.
By contrast, Mia is so much more complex than she gets to be in RE8, where she’s honestly done pretty dirty. And having now played RE7, I’m retroactively a little disappointed that RE8 wasn’t about Ethan and Mia getting to be some kind of awesome battle couple (unconducive to horror as that might be): they’re both kind of badass when they actually get the chance.
Tumblr media
So, yeah. At the end of the day, RE7 and RE8 make a very weird little duology. It's well worth checking out at least a Let’s Play of RE7 or a compilation of cutscenes if you loved RE8, just for backstory. But it’s not a game really designed for the same audience – and for me at least, just a much less satisfying experience overall.
*Considering how far apart they are on the fangirl-bait scale, I feel sort of like I ought to apoologise to Heisenberg and his fanbase for even comparing him to Lucas Baker, but I'm sorry: on paper, they do have rather a lot in common.

Hey, I’m curious. Where does the name “through the valley to life” come from?
!!! No one has asked this yet, and I'm so happy someone has. <3
"Though The Valley, To Life" is kind of a multi-level nod to a lot of things. On one level, it's a slight nod to the music album "Through the Deep, Dark Valley," which I really enjoy and which had some minor influence on developing TtVtL (a couple songs from this album are in the TtVtL playlist). On a larger level, it's a play on a specific biblical quote (as is, I believe, "Through the Deep, Dark Valley")--Psalm 23:4. There's minor variation in translations of this Psalm, but the energy stays the same. Here's the English Standard Version, which is the translation I personally like most just for its poetry--
"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."
('The valley of the shadow of death' is sometimes also translated as 'the valley of darkness', for context.)
Given the heavily Catholic influence on the aesthetics of RE8--and the general role religion plays in the plot--it felt fun and fitting to shape a title in recognition of this. Especially given the "Village of Shadows" being the literal title of the picture-book about Miranda's town in RE8--a story of the journey of a young girl through a hostile landscape, who must learn to distinguish gifts from trials, and must be reunited with her parents.
Thus, the name "Through the Valley, to Life" is a nod to all of the above, and a statement of purpose. Ethan and Eveline are in the Valley--the valley of shadows, of darkness, of death. This valley is their respective background traumas, the indelible marks the Baker Homestead have left on them, and, of course, the Village of RE8 itself. They must overcome all this if they wish to be safe and happy. They must pass through the valley, and only then can they live freely. Through the Valley, To Life.
