It was rare, her springing for first class like this. Typically when she traveled on her own, Cora went for the easiest or cheapest option, never one to be too fussy about that type of thing. Transportation was just a functional service after all. No need to bells and whistles. She had to admit that it was certainly nice, though, having actual space, with some peace and quiet, to relax while on the flight. Those perks were great, don’t get her wrong, but the best part of it all for Cora? The company. It was always a reaaaal fun treat for her when someone agreed to come along. And while she didn’t want to bother them, she was too excited not to bug ‘em, nudging their arm and whispering, “Are you awake?”

These teams stink at finding second basemen, and these teams are great

Welcome back to SB Nation’s series of the teams that are bad at filling positions around the ol’ baseball diamond. If you’re a glass-half-full kind of person, you can call this a series of the teams that are great at filling these positions. But as the planet burns and we sink deeper into the cosmic tar, I prefer to laugh at incompetence.

Here’s the problem with today’s position, though: Teams are generally pretty okay at finding second basemen.

Our last installment about first basemen pointed us to the devastatingly sad recent history of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who found more All-Star-caliber catchers over the last two decades than barely competent first basemen. There isn’t a team nearly that bad with second basemen. Of the 30 teams in baseball, two-thirds of them had a deserving starter at second just last year.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t a couple of exceptions.

The goal is to look for which teams found the best second basemen over the last two decades, from 1997 through 2016. The system is simple, and it uses the Baseball-Reference quick-’n’-dirty guide to what WAR totals mean:

2+ starter 5+ All-Star 8+ MVP

Note that I’m rounding up — a 1.5-WAR player counts as a starting-caliber second baseman — because decimal points in WAR are kind of silly.

So which teams have been better than others at getting their hands on second basemen? Which teams have failed more often than their fans would like? To the numbers!

The quietly consistent

At the bottom of this post, there’s a table, and some of the teams won’t surprise you at all. With the catchers, for example, the Rangers fared well and, yeah, that’s because they had Ivan Rodriguez for a chunk of the last two decades. The Cardinals had the most MVP-caliber first basemen because Albert Pujols was absurd.

When you think of the Tigers and second base, though, who do you think of? Ian Kinsler recently, sure. Hall-of-Famer Charlie Gehringer and Should-Be-Hall-of-Famer-I-Will-Fight-You Lou Whitaker from the past, of course. But it’s not like they had someone you instantly identify with the franchise.

They usually had someone, though. Of all the teams in baseball, the Tigers have been the most consistent team at finding second basemen, doing it in 17 seasons out of the last 20. It’s even more impressive when you consider how awful they were in the early ‘00s. It’s a varied list, too:

Damion Easley (five times)

Placido Polanco (five times)

Ian Kinsler (three times)

Omar Infante (twice)

Ramon Santiago

Warren Morris

That’s the best part of this series, in my opinion. One minute, you’re sipping a cup of coffee, not thinking about Warren Morris, and then, BAM, Warren Morris.

And now you’re thinking about Alex Cora, who showed up on this search for the Dodgers. What a world.

The East Coast Second Base Hegemony

The Tigers have been consistent, sure, but if you want stars? It’s the Phillies’ and Yankees’ world, and all we can do is be super jealous about how awesome their second basemen have been over the last few years.

This shouldn’t be a surprise, really, when you remember Chase Utley and Robinson Cano. Of the 12 seasons where a second baseman cracked that magical 8-WAR barrier, half of them came from those two (with three each). In addition to those MVP-caliber seasons, the Phillies also had nine starting-caliber seasons and three All-Star seasons.

The Yankees got the three MVP-caliber seasons from Cano, and they also got four starting-caliber seasons and five All-Star seasons. If there’s a tiebreaker between these two teams, it’s that the Yankees haven’t had a second baseman worth two wins since Brian Roberts in 2014. Starlin Castro appears ready to break that drought, though.

As for the other guy on the East Coast? Dustin Pedroia got close, and the Red Sox have enjoyed five starting-caliber seasons, six All-Star seasons, and one MVP-level season, which is outstanding compared to the rest of baseball, but they couldn’t quite get where the Phillies and Yankees were.

I’m using this specific article as my only source for making Hall of Fame picks in 10 years. And it looks like the numbers say ... hey, wait, come back.

The Worst

Again, there aren’t any completely destitute teams in this regard. But there are a few teams that stand out.

The Braves got an MVP-caliber season from Marcus Giles, who finished with 7.8 WAR in 2003, when he was 25 ... and then finished with 7.8 WAR over the final four years of his strange career. Other than three seasons from Giles, though, the Braves have had seven kinda-sorta-okay seasons from Dan Uggla, Kelly Johnson, and Quilvio Veras, but nothing more.

The Dodgers, Pirates, and Brewers all had a decent-to-good second baseman every other year, roughly, but none of them have had a breakout season in the last 20 years, with no All-Star seasons to be found. You might expect that from the small-market teams, but the Dodgers is something of a surprise. Logan Forsythe might help them get over the hump soon, but if that doesn’t happen, expect them to pay cash for Jose Altuve or D.J. LeMahieu soon.

The worst of the worst, though? I’m guessing that White Sox fans were waiting for their team to come up since the opening paragraph. The only reason they weren’t the biggest story here is that they employed Ray Durham, a two-time All-Star who was one of the more underappreciated second basemen of his generation. The White Sox got five solid seasons from him (and more earlier) in the last two decades. When he left, they got an okay-OBP, sweet-defense season from Willie Harris, two pretty-okay seasons from Tadahito Iguchi, and a stellar rookie campaign from Alexei Ramirez in 2008.

Since then: nothing. Absolutely nothing. In order, the second basement they’ve tried:

Micah Johnson

Gordon Beckham

Angel Sanchez

Tyler Greene

Chris Getz

Oh, my goodness, there’s a lot of Gordon Beckham in here

Danny Richar

|| Open Starter || Ft. Cora Warren Open to F/M Plot: Cora is a nanny/baby-sitter for your muse’s child. It’s time for her to leave for the evening, but she wants to make sure to say goodbye to your muse (who she may or may not have a crush on). They’ve been flirting for weeks and maybe it’s finally time to break some of that tension. Your muse can be single or partnered (bonus points for affairs).

The little one was asleep, everything in the kitchen from dinner had been tidied, and Cora was ready to leave for the day. Okay, so maybe ready wasn’t the right word. It was more that societal norms dictated that the end of a work day meant departing for home. In that sense she was ready. Truth is though, she’d much rather stay and keep her employer company. When she’d first taken on the job, she hadn’t expected to get so attached, both to the child she cared for, and their father. There were nights when she was more support than anything so she’d spent a decent amount of time with them. Was she crazy for picking up on well… vibes? She was a notorious flirt, but she liked to think she could tell when someone was giving her as good as they were getting.

Knocking on the door of the room they were in, Cora hung in the doorway and told them quietly, “I think I’m done with everything for the night. Unless there’s anything else you need from me?”

“You don’t need to work today.” It wasn’t really a question, more of just a fact. In her opinion, their focus needed to be entirely focused on her. Cora was in a particularly needy, bratty mood, and if it hadn’t been obvious yet, it should have been when she told them, “I don’t wanna share you today. I want you to be all mine.”

Cora didn’t make a habit of going home. She didn’t need to deal with the bad memories. But once in a blue moon her older brother could convince her to visit, and it appeared that that blue moon was here. There was usually one good part about coming back -  that was getting the chance to see them, one of her oldest friends. Perched on the bed of her childhood room, she grinned at them, “What are we doing tonight? Caleb is out, so we have the run of the place. Or we can go out?”

She’d managed to get an earlier flight than normal, and had snuck into their place - as much as you can sneak in when you’ve got a key to the place. Cora slipped into some of her favorite lingerie - a lacy little red number - and splayed across their bed, waiting for them to get home. She lost track of time until she heard the front door closing. They entered the room and Cora grinned at them, giggling as she said, “Surprise! I got in early!”

A loud clap of thunder ripped across the sky, and Cora’s knee began to bounce up and down. Since she was little thunder had scared her, and no matter how much she knew that it was just a sound that couldn’t hurt her, she’d just never been able to get over it. Another crash and she jumped a little in her seat. She figured she looked crazy, and offered an apologetic smile to the person beside her. They seemed relatively non-threatening, and she wasn’t afraid of making a friend. Maybe a chat was the perfect distraction. “Thunder freaks me out. Like a lot. Which may sound dumb, but here we are.” She jerked her head toward the gate, and asked, “Do you think we’ll make it out of here tonight? Or end up stranded?”

open starter | ft. cora warren open to: f/m/nb the sitch: she’s short and needs help reaching a book on a shelf in a book store. your muse can either be tall enough to help, or can help her figure out how to get it. 

This wasn’t a big box book store. No, this was a tiny little local place, the kind that was owned by a bent over older man - Cora had noted him on the way in, saying hello and asking how he was. He was clearly the only employee, so when she, all five-foot-two-inches of her, was hit with a challenge, she wasn’t quite sure who to ask for help. Certainly not him. The challenge being, the book she’d been hunting for, a slim thing filled with poems, was up on a higher shelf.  Glancing around her, there was nothing to stand on, and the shelves didn’t look like they could stand being climbed. Nothing to reach with either... Fuck. Okay. She would ask for a step ladder or something... but then she saw signs of life in the form of another customer and she, too loudly for a book store, called out, “Hi!”  When she had their attention, she approached, a big smile on her face, exuding every ounce of charm she possessed, “Hey. Hi. I was wonderin’ if you wouldn’t mind helpin’ me out? There’s a book I can’t quite reach... I’ll uh... buy you a coffee at the shop next door as a thank you. Or y’can pick a book of your choice, on me.” What could she say? She really wanted the book. “You’d be my hero.”

They had hardly knocked on her hotel room door, before Cora was slipping her hand into the hallway, gripping their wrist, pulling them in behind her, giggling as she closed the door. “Okay, okay -- I know this probably isn’t what you meant when you said ‘dress up’... But... I like my version better?” Stepping back she motioned to her outfit... which was a generous term. An oversized sweatshirt, thigh high socks, cat ears, and not one scrap of fabric more than that. “And I uh...” Head tilted, she leaned in to kiss them, before murmuring against their mouth, “I’ve got a matching tail somewhere... If you’re interested...”
