You know something I realized? Branch’s brothers…technically don’t actually know how old Branch was when he had to start taking care of himself. They know he had to start due to the gruesome death of their grandma, but (if I remember correctly) they don’t actually know WHEN he had to start. They probably don’t know he was in single digits. They’ve yet to realize that Branch was almost ridiculously young when he lost their grandma, so young he didn’t really have any life skills yet.

That's definitely one of the things that's the most interesting to think about when it comes to the aftermath of Band Together, especially as a writer who's really invested in the dynamics between BroZone.

They don't know. They don't know anything about Branch's life because they left before he ever even really started to live it. They all just sort of appeared back into his life and acted like they were getting together after a few years apart and not after they all simultaneously walked out on him decades ago.

They don't know that Grandama Rosiepuff died when Branch was still just a trolling. They don't know that Branch had to flee the Troll Tree by himself with no one to guide him in the panic. They don't know that Branch was likely outcasted from the village long before his self-imposed isolation because of his standoffish and hopeless nature. They don't know that their baby brother dug out their hideout with his little hands and built it up from scratch because he was scared and alone and desperate for some place where he could feel safe, a place where they could stay if they came back for him.

They look at him and see their baby brother, maybe there's some regret and some guilt there, but none of them have any idea of the extent of what Branch has been through. They don't know how he's suffered or how he's persevered despite that.

There is so much that they will inevitably uncover if they plan to remain in Branch's life and the weight of it will be crushing.

oh ho ho i have looked up the massachusetts ballot questions and i am so personally excited to vote against the MCAS, the high school standardized test students must pass to graduate. it never impacted my own education because i was in the very last class not to have to take it (late 90s), but i was selected for the pool of beta testers the year before it was universally implemented.

i had a great time actually—get out of class for two days for a test that doesn’t even matter? i enjoyed the process of taking standardized tests (when they didn’t matter) because i had spent most of my pre-high-school days in a homeschool environment without grades, so they reminded of the trivia workbook pages that were rationed out and treated as rewards (in a one room schoolhouse with 5 kids, you take the thrills you could get—public school education was pretty amazing after that).

the most memorable part of it for me was that we got little boxes of raisins as a snack and mine had an inchworm in it. but even then as a dumbass teenager i remember giving feedback that this would be demoralizing and unfair if imposed on everyone. schools chose who would put in the test group, and every one was an A student! what kind of sample was that?

the MCAS wouldn’t become a compulsory requirement for graduation until no child left behind, but it still immediately changed things. my sister was one year behind me, and her experience in the same classes i had taken the year before was so much less inspiring. history and civics teachers who had been painstakingly gathering copies of real articles for decades about historical events had to teach from state approved textbooks. the cross-disciplinary fun projects for multiple subjects were cancelled. older teachers started phoning it in and planned their retirement.

anyway, one of the things i have always felt most grateful for in my life is that i squeaked through my public education before state testing choked it. it was a small rural public school (pretty well funded though, there are a lot of fancy summer homes in property taxing distance), and had very passionate teachers who were having extra creative fun squeezing out the last of their independence, knowing that testing was coming. i was one of the canaries in the coal mine and i will take great pleasure if my vote helps shut it down.

Sure! Here’s a little somethin’ somethin’:

So, Branch didn’t confess his feelings to Poppy at the end of Word Tour, he felt like it needed to be its own thing and that Poppy deserved to be in the moment after saving the world. He thought there’d be plenty of time to confess later. They still have a good connection though now that they’re better at communicating.

They’re out in the hot air balloon on another adventure when a strong wind knocks them off course towards the woods near the base of Mount Rageous and they get stuck in a tree. They aren’t able to shift the balloon on their own so when they see Velvet and Veneer (who are out hunting for Trolls to use) they ask them for help, but instead V&V capture them.

V&V now have a Troll to use each (His and Hers Trolls) and because Velvet is more trigger happy with the spray bottle, Poppy deteriorates quicker than Branch.

I keep imagining a young Branch right after the Bergan escape, all the trolls helping each other escape while he’s all on his own. And then with “Once upon a time in New York City” from Oliver and Company playing… the ANGST. Branch watching as a mother helps her kid along…

The lyrics literally go “And now you’re on your ownnnnn” I just feel like it fits.

Thinking about baby Branch during the escape from Bergen Town is always heart-wrenching no matter how you look at it, I think.

He's just small, and gray, and alone in the panic to leave the only home he's ever known. The home that not only raised him but the home that will always haunt him. The home where his brothers laughed with each other and screamed at each other. The home where Grandma Rosiepuff tucked him in every night and the home where she died for him.

And no one is helping. Everyone is grabbing onto their friends and family, urging the people they care about through the tunnels and leaving him behind because no one cares about him. Why would they? He's gray, he's sad and angry, and he's a curse.

I love the idea of his turmoil and desperation to get out while everyone just overlooks him being accompanied by Oliver and Company. You're brilliant, Anon.

Hiii!! Ufff I don't know how to tell you that I love your take on Floyd. like some bad bad life decisions were taken (THAT SO!!! INTERESTING FOR HIM). Do you think he ever feels ashamed of himself when he looks at Branch's eyes, like "shit, this guy really believes in me" or "he doesn't even know everything I have done"? Like he has some really BIG "Love me Less by Max" vibes

They all really believe in his goodness which is worse

And OH he definitely feels so much shame and regret. I think a big part of why he fell as hard as he did was because he finally didn't have to be his brothers' mediator, and I guess at one point he forgot that he still needed to be the voice of reason for himself. His new band mates encouraging his reckless behavior didn't help. Honestly I personally think young Floyd was a very naive kid and very dependent on his older brothers but his strong empathy gave them all the impression that he was much more mature and independent than he really was...

So yeah... you can imagine that constantly partying, doing drugs and sleeping around wears someone down after a few years. I think Floyd also went gray like Branch (not for as long tho) and he broke up with the band wanting to go home badly, but he was also ashamed of showing his face after a number of years as a gray drug addict, so he kind of just ended up alone...

If we're sharing songs, I have to show you this one by Linkin Park because I think Floyd wrote it for Branch (and the rest of his family (and some parts also addressing himself)) while he was at that desperate and lonely period because I am also extremely emo
