I can't wait for @nightgoodomens and @ingravinoveritas takes on today. Something happened and while I'm happy to not have GM around the fact it was MS&DT ALL night makes my eyebrows raise.

@craftyballoonwinner It has taken me the last few days to process everything that happened on Friday, because to say that I am floored by what we got is a tremendous understatement.

We knew that Michael had been in London and had specifically gotten a house in Chiswick close to David's house since November of last year, for his run in Nye at the National Theatre. We knew that the second run in Cardiff ended on June 1st and that as soon as it did, Michael immediately came back to London. We knew that--schedules and work/family commitments allowing--they were likely spending a great deal of time together (despite only seeing three pictures of them over the course of that entire interval: The Macbeth photo, the blurry pic that Anna posted back in November, and the photo from Lapland last December).

The smallest pieces, flashes of something beautiful and bright yet still obscured, ensconced from public view. So much so that I never in a million years expected Michael to come to Pub in the Park--hoped, certainly, but the thought of it actually happening seemed like a distant dream, a dazzling impossibility.

But this past Friday was just...so extraordinary and lovely precisely because it was ordinary. It wasn't a press junket or an interview or Michael and David promoting something...it was just them. The two of them together, basking in the warmth of each other's presence. It was there even in the first picture I saw, and it permeated through every clip, every moment of them at the event:

The smiles. The ease and comfort they have around each other. The effortless love that just exists between Michael and David, and that is tangible in every dimension, as much on a screen as in real life. And when they were on stage together, it wasn't even that they played off each other so well--it was that Michael's last minute appearance didn't cause either of them to lose so much as a step. It was that you just knew that they couldn't have put any other two people up on that stage without prior planning and had that same chemistry, that charm and familiarity. And it was just so damn wonderful to see Michael and David looking so happy and joyful overall.

As for what happened with Georgia, I am just more confused than anything else. For the last month and a half, Georgia heavily promoted PitP, and both she and David billed her as a co-host. Every flyer, every piece of promotion that was shared (both by the PitP social media and Georgia) mentioned her as a co-host, along with David. She even did an interview on the Gaby Roslin podcast with David and Arabella Weir where she was again specifically referred to as a co-host and admitted not knowing her own Instagram handle, as well as saying that she would be active on Insta during the PitP event.

There is a strange irony to the podcast as well, given that David actually said "We're failing our hosting duties right here!" in the above linked clip, and what seemed like a joke at the time actually came to pass. For whatever reason, Georgia failed in her duty, the job that she signed up to do. Had it been because of all the attacks that David was a target of over the past week after the blow-up with Kemi Badenoch, Rishi Sunak, and the entire Tory party, that would have made sense. I would have completely understood if Georgia, who had also been targeted in those attacks, was feeling anxious or worried about her/the kids' safety and elected to stay home instead.

However...Georgia didn't stay home. She actually was at the event, as were several of their kids (Ty and Olive, from what I've seen). She was there, drinking and dancing, and somehow that made her abdication of co-hosting duty even more conspicuous and strange. It also makes it increasingly obvious that Michael's appearance on stage was a last minute occurrence and not part of the original plan of events.

So what actually happened? I don't know. None of us know, and it's likely we won't know until a later time, if ever. But in the real world, if you are given a job to do, if a contract is signed with a written agreement to do that job and you don't do the job, there are consequences. At the very least, it can negatively affect someone's reputation and reduce the likelihood of them receiving offers for future jobs. On the other end, you could be looking at potential lawsuits for things like breach of contract. And none of this even gets into disappointed fans or attendees who might've been hoping to see Georgia host and who could possibly now claim to be victims of false advertising because she didn't.

It also feels like a huge missed opportunity on the part of PitP, who could have potentially raised hundreds or even thousands of pounds more for charity had Michael been booked as a co-host, or even a guest. Regardless of whether Michael was there in an official capacity, though, I am just glad that he was there, and that we got to see the two of them together again.

The night may have lacked the glitz and formal glamour of the NTAs, but it more than made up for it with the relaxed domesticity we got to see between Michael and David. And now that Michael is hanging around London a bit longer, hopefully there will be many more memorable nights like this to come.

Have you seen the article Michael wrote for the mirror published on 15/8/2024? it won’t let me link it here, but it’s titled “Theatre changed my life“ and it’s a wonderful piece - I felt very sad to hear him speak of his father’s struggle with Alzheimer’s, but it always warms my heart to see all the good he’s doing with his charity work. It reminded me of hearing him speak so passionately about his charitable works on the Table Manners podcast

Hi there! Oh, it's so lovely to hear from a longtime reader/lurker. I appreciate you writing in! I did indeed see the article Michael wrote for The Mirror this past week. I'll post the link below, for folks who haven't gotten a chance to see it:

I didn't know that Michael's dad has Alzheimer's, and was so saddened to read about this and to imagine the pain his family must be feeling. One of the things that made me first fall in love with Michael is that he is such a brilliant storyteller, but in particular when he talks about people he really loves. He brings those people so completely to life because he wants you to know who they are. Meyrick has always seemed like such an almost larger-than-life character, and it felt like we knew him, in a way, from Michael's stories--especially the ones about his work as a Jack Nicholson lookalike. So it breaks my heart to know that Michael is having to see the threads of who his father is slowly slipping away.

I agree with you as well that it was lovely to read about Michael talking about his charity work. None of it felt braggadocios in the slightest--rather, it seemed like it was Michael saying, "I've done all these things, but there is still so much more to do, so many more people who need help." It seems like he doesn't even necessarily think of it as "charity work," but as essential efforts to create change. Things that should already be happening, but that for one reason or another aren't.

Michael never seems content, in that way, to rest on his laurels, and that may be why he is always keeping himself busy with film work, charity work, and so on. I love as well that he started Mab Gwalia to fund endeavors that he himself is unable to personally helm, but still supports and champions (ASD Rainbows and A Writing Chance are particularly close to my heart as a writer who also happens to be an autistic woman). I just hope he isn't overextending himself by trying to do too much, especially after spending the first half of this year playing Nye Bevan, which was so physically and mentally demanding on its own.

I also wanted to thank you for the kind words you said at the close of your message. There are times where it's difficult for me to tell what sort of presence I have in the fandom, or if I'm just shouting into the void (though I suppose we all are, in a way). So I am very glad to know that you are enjoying my posts (even if I do tend to overthink everything). My heartfelt gratitude to you for writing in! x

Like the cat hates EVERYONE but mc and mc treats it like a baby to the point they bring it everywhere. Oh, you wanna ask mc out? Their cat is right there, judging you. You want alone time? No, the cat will be there whether you like it or not. The cat has cute little outfits too, costs way too much for it to be normal.

It sounds like an adorable idea😽I love fluff (and cats-) so I'll do my best to write some good headcanons💖in the meantime I apologize for how long it took me🙈:

"RAD CLASSMATES+NEW EXCHANGE STUDENTS WITH A MC WHO HAS A GRUMPY CAT"

DEMYA

At first Demya would even find MC's grumpy cat cute, especially for the outfits, which would make her assume that MC treats it very well, almost like a child, a quality that Demya would be able to appreciate, because although she likes meat, Demya hates animal abuse and places like zoos or especially circuses, where some animals are kept in cages, make her uncomfortable, due to a phase of her childhood. However, Demya remains a territorial demon with feral tendencies, so as soon as she realizes that the cat is trying to monopolize MC's attention, she would quietly declare war. To make her relationship with MC clear, Demya would leave her scent on her mate, to signal that they're already taken, making sure to cover the scent left by the cat. When the grumpy cat is present during cuddles, Demya would make sure to cuddle on top of MC, taking up all available space and making sure to stare the sulky cat in the eyes defiantly. Even vocalizing affection would become a challenge, when the cat would purr at MC, Demya, unable to do that, would let out an affectionate deep guttural growl, loud enough to make MC's bones rumble. If none of her methods worked, then Demya would try a truce, offering the grumpy cat kibbles and treats, after all such a strategy would work on her. If MC pointed out that Demya was trying to bribe their cat, Demya would sulk and say that the cat started it. In the end, Demya and the cat, for MC's sake, would be able to tolerate each other and live together, a bit like they were sibilings

DOMNRA/MOBIM

Domnra respects cats, they are agile, brave, clever and would also respect their need for space, understanding it firsthand, however it would be difficult for Domnra to take MC's grumpy cat seriously, given the way in which it is dressed, in fact although Mobim's mentality is a bit childish, Domnra would never dress the little curse in such clothes. Domnra wouldn't particularly mind the cat's frequent presence, being used to almost always having Mobim with him, even in MC's company, however the grumpy cat's judging gaze while he tries to kiss MC would make Domnra a little uncomfortable. Now, it wouldn't necessarily bother Domnra if he were the object of the cat's resentment, however it would be a problem if it also behaved so grumpily towards Mobim, with the little curse being innocent and timidly trying to make friends, therefore for Mobim's sake, MC would ask their cat to make an effort to at least accept Mobim, doing activities together such as playing or taking naps. Mobim would grow attached to the grumpy cat, but would still be afraid of being hit by a paw

AZUL

Azul, as the menace he is, would be far too eccentric and clingy even for MC's grumpy cat, because he wouldn't be jealous at all and would actually be very affectionate towards the cat, despite scratches or hisses, he would also take a lot of photos of the cat wearing those adorable outfits on MC's lap, cooing over the cuteness of the scene. Azul would also try to play with the cat with some toys and would jokingly make fun of the cat by comparing it to Domnra, given the grumpyness, however in the end, Azul wouldn't mind having the cat close by, in fact he would even try to include it, whether in pictures or cuddles. Basically Azul would become with MC the other parent, much to the grumpy cat's dismay

ZURI

Zuri finds cats to be very elegant and charming creatures with graceful movements and sinuous walks, so there wouldn't be too much difference between her and MC's cat, she would also appreciate the high quality outfits that MC buys for their cat, making sure to help them in search for fabrics and materials that do not bother the feline's skin or ability to move. Zuri would notice MC's morbid attachment to the animal and vice versa, noting the mutual desire for closeness, even in their moments of intimacy such as dates, however as an adult and mature demon, Zuri would refuse to be jealous of a cat, her pride wouldn't allow it after all. One of Zuri's methods to spend some quality time alone, however, would be to offer the grumpy cat a grooming treatment in a specialized shop and to take a walk with MC before going back to pick it up after the treatment. In the end Zuri would respect MC's sulky cat and the two would coexist quite civilly

ODON

Odon, despite how sad that might sound, wouldn't be too surprised that MC's well dressed cat doesn't like them, they half-expected it, because although most animals seem interested in their presence, there are exceptions to the rule, namely creatures that trust less, perceiving their powerful eldritch nature, however Odon would come to terms with it, even if they would like to befriend the grumpy cat, since it seems very important to MC. Odon wouldn't mind the presence of the sulky cat at all, they would handle it quite well, who would actually be annoyed would be Odon's eye-like creatures, who would return the judgmental glares directed at the cat, while MC is unaware. If the grumpy cat were to scratch one of the eye-like creatures, especially on the eyeball, Odon's eye-like creature would float towards MC in tears to be comforted, exaggerating the pain it feels. In the end, Odon would like the cat's presence and over time the feline would get used to the eldritch being, but between the grumpy cat and the eye-like creatures there would be a sort of rivalry

REMIEL

Remiel isn't used to deal with animals, at least not living ones, in fact the only animals she has ever interacted with are her father's Death undead crow and steed, Dust and Despair, probably the only friends she ever had during her lonely childhood. Remiel wouldn't have an opinion on the cat's sullen face, as she has a rather somber resting face and its frequent presence wouldn't disturb her at all, the curious angel of death would however ask some questions about its clothes, wondering if they don't make the cat too warm or itchy. Remiel's soothing and comforting presence would, over time, convince the grumpy cat to accept her and welcome her into MC's life. Furthermore, Remiel would only try to pet the cat if she obtained MC's consent first

NATHANIEL

Nathaniel is mainly fascinated by creatures such as insects, especially butterflies, a trait in common with Azul, however he would still be very interested in learning more about other animals, such as MC's cat, very well dressed and taken care of. Nathaniel as an angel would be quite good at making animals feel safe and at ease, which is why it would seem a little strange to him that MC's grumpy cat would refuse to let him get too close, however Nathaniel doesn't embody patience without reason and therefore he would be patient until the cat gets used to his presence near MC, even the judging gaze wouldn't bother Nathaniel, understanding that the cat is only trying to protect MC. Nathaniel would probably be the angel with the least difficulty in possibly making friends with the grumpy cat, chilling together

URIEL

Uriel is usually more used to seeing magical creatures than terrestrial animals, such as griffins or monsters to slay, so she would attempt to be extremely cautious towards MC's cat, fearing its fragile feline body would break with a single touch from her. As an angel, albeit a warrior, Uriel would expect animals to like her, so she would grow a little frustrated by the grumpy cat's judgmental gaze towards her, even if she would refuse to admit that she was either offended or jealous, in the name of the Celestial Realm she's worthy of being with MC, she doesn't need the approval of a ridiculously dressed cat. Despite her troubled thoughts, to please MC, Uriel would try to manage the sulky cat as best she can, even when it interrupts intimate moments or plays with the feathers of her wings. MC should praise Uriel's effort, because she's usually not very patient

do you have any ideas for what you want for eiffel and hera post-canon?

yes, i do! the answer to that really depends on whether we're talking short term or long term, and what i want vs. what i think will happen is... well, i think they'll be okay. eventually. they'll get there.

i'm firmly in the camp that eiffel gets his memories back (fairly short-term in my mental timeline; given the most likely ways that he could get his memories back, it doesn't make much sense for him to be without them for more than a few months) and that hera gets a body (more complicated, and somewhat more long term), but my reasoning for why i think those things work narratively would be a long post in itself (and i've made multiple posts about those topics already) so i won't get into the why here. just, i think it happens.

the note the finale ends on definitely implies eiffel, hera, and minkowski intend to stick together on earth, and i think minkowski feels a lot of responsibility for them, given everything. so i think they live with her, for the foreseeable future. eiffel's not good at holding down a job, and hera... i think it's important that she gets a chance to try things without fear of failure and to separate her self worth from productivity. eiffel and hera are meant to be minkowski's slacker roommates. hera should be creating unmarketable art.

and the issue of where they live will come up pretty quickly, i think - hera doesn't have any particular attachment to anywhere, except for a desire to see the ocean, but mobility might be a problem. minkowski is a career military woman who's moved around a lot, but her husband worked in DC, so presumably they lived in... probably maryland or virginia? before she accepted the job, and that's a complicating factor if she's choosing who to prioritize. i think eiffel would be pretty adamant about staying in texas so he's at least in the same state as his daughter, even if he can't see her. and as much as i would like for eiffel to be able to be a part of her life again, because i know how much he wants that... i don't think it's very likely. at least not any time soon. and he won't handle that well.

speaking about post-canon wolf 359, i don't tend to get that into potential legal / media circuit stuff because... frankly, i don't think it's that important to what the show is about. i'm sure it will be a scandal, but lots and lots of space-travel-related scandals are going on in that world, and cutter and pryce were very intentionally not the public faces of goddard futuristics. it'll pass. that said, the aspect of that i am interested in is legal personhood - that's going to be a hurdle for hera to be able to live her life, and i think eiffel will worry - even if it isn't totally rational - about whether he'll be able to stay out of prison once no longer legally dead, not knowing exactly what the terms of cutter's arrangement were. being an ex-convict is going to complicate some facets of his life regardless.

there's just a lot of stuff that being on earth is going to bring up for them. and i think they'll be there for each other, obviously - one of the things i like most about their relationship is how much they're able to be a refuge for each other in some objectively horrible situations - but they're both pretty insecure people who feel like everyone is bound to replace them, and earth is going to give hera some serious separation anxiety while she's bound to one location and the others aren't, and those are things they're going to have to work through.

as for what i want for them... well. i think eiffel will give hera a 'promise ring' with a kind of jokey but good natured promise that one day she'll be able to wear it. and she does! but neither of them are sure if that counts as a proposal in retrospect and they dance around it for a while. they get married eventually, and - against her better judgment - minkowski agrees to be both eiffel's best man and hera's maid of honor. and ends up taking on way too much of the wedding planning, even though she said she wouldn't, because they're both super lax about it and it starts stressing her out. she tries to delegate to lovelace, but lovelace just thinks it's all really funny. eiffel gets married in a novelty tuxedo tee and minkowski apologizes to hera, but hera knows the type of guy she's marrying (and isn't concerned about tradition anyway) so it doesn't bother her.
