Her words only spurred Anakin on, making him want to push harder. Clearly she needed someone in her corner and he was more than willing to be that someone. "What if I want you to put it on me though? Whatever it is, I promise I can help you carry it. Give me a shot."

@ofmusingsxandmayhem asked: Randomise a question each for the following muses: Anakin, Elijah, Tara, Evelyn, Grace, Kolton, Lachlan, Aurora!
send me a # to learn an unusual hc about my muse! | accepting
Anakin: 46 - if they could control one thing in the world, what would it be?
Okay so assuming he could control ANYTHING, even things that aren't possible, he would bring Theo back from the dead. For a more realistic, grounded answer he would reopen the investigation and figure out how Theo died.
Elijah: 25 - do they get scared easily? does loud noises, shouting, etc, scare them?
Nope, I don't think so. Elijah strikes me as a pretty solid person who does not frighten easily, especially as a vampire. He probably gets frustrated by shouting since it would be extra loud for him but not scared no.
Tara: 43 - do they like living alone or with another person / other people?
Yes and no. Tara appreciates the freedom of living alone. Not having rules or anyone check in on her is so so nice for her. But then she would also get so lonely and overwhelmed without someone else near? She grew up having the option to run to her uncle when she needed love so living alone would be tough in that regard for sure.
Evelyn: 14 - do they stay up too late? do they like staying up?
Yes, she stays up very late. In fact, Evelyn hardly sleeps. She's conditioned herself over the years to be able to function on very minimal sleep since she couldn't always afford to sleep on a job. She likes it well enough, since sleep is usually uncomfortable for her anyway (hello nightmares).
Grace: 50 - where do they see themselves in 2 / 5 / 10 years?
In 2 years Grace sees herself in a stable relationship, with her guard down. She feels safe. In 5 years she would like to have taken the next step with her partner, be that a house, an engagement, or a marriage. Maybe she's published a book too. In 10 years she sees herself as a mother, having reconciled her guilt over the adoption from her youth. Maybe there's more than one child. She's happy and at peace.
Kolton: 42 - are they happy in their current living situation? why or why not?
Yupp, 100%. Kolton is so relieved to live a normal, quiet life. He gets to be himself and feels quite comfortable. After so many years of silence he believes that he's finally going to be left alone by the people from his past and can enjoy living! He gets to have a fixed location curated to his tastes! That he can eventually share with someone! Amazing.
Lachlan: 32 - do they critique others easily? do they judge from afar?
Lachlan tries to claim that he doesn't, and he tries not to, but yeah I think he does. The critiquing has gotten MUCH better (he was terrible at this in his last relationship) but the judging is still a work in progress. He has been known to gossip about people with friends, oops.
Aurora: 4 - do they wear their hair down when they sleep, or tied up / braided?
Aurora switches it up. Some nights it's down, sometimes it's in a high bun when she wants it off her neck, sometimes it's braided. The first two are more common since they require minimal effort and she usually doesn't have a lot of time before bed to braid it.

Pame waking up and noticing things early cause she is ALERT and ready on the Palpatine stuff is SO great. might be the most satisfying stuff of time travel, even if dont tell specifically WARNING, WARNING. Palps can and has cursed Padme entire existence MULTIPLE times and he is going to CONTINUE to hate even MORE and it will be GLORIOUS. Padme is here and READY for this fight, Naboo are going to tell children fables of how much I shall bitch slap you old Shiev. WHOOO! Also Anakin being gifted Plot Macguffun and thus given Plot decisions in his power is nice, you love to see some potential Agency in the future.
Padmé being the most effective character at destroying Palpatine's plans, mostly on accident by targeting a seemingly unimportant aspect and then domino style knocking over all the other connecting pieces like Evelyn in the library in the Mummy will always be my favorite thing. You can pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Halloween with the Ohana | H.C |

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Happy Halloween, besties! Please be safe and have a great night!
Hangman, Phoenix, and Austin decorated the inside and outside of the house for Halloween. While you, Bradley, the boys, and Leia were passed out in your bedroom.
They were all already in their costumes. Austin was Buzz Lightyear, Phoenix was Jessie, and Hangman was Woody.
Hangman and Austin set up the front yard with webs, spiders, signs, skeletons, ghosts, and pumpkins. The arch way leading into the house was cute and fun for the trick or treaters that would come later on.
Phoenix was hard at work decorating the inside to surprise all of you for when you woke up.
She decorated the kitchen counters with webs and skeletons. She hung spider webs, spiders and ghosts from the ceiling. She bought an illuminating globe to shine little pumpkins and ghosts on the walls.
Hangman and Austin joined Phoenix back inside to help with desserts and games.
Austin created a festive snack board and some worms in dirt cups for the kids.
Hangman made spooky Jell-O shots for the adults and spooky punch for the kiddies.
Phoenix blew up black balloons and put spider webbing on them to decorate the house some more.
After Austin and Hangman finished their contributions to the party, they got together and came up with games. The created the zombie eyeball toss, pumpkin ring toss, and they set up some toilet paper for a mummy game.
You and Bradley finally woke up and got ready for the day. You all had a family theme, Star Wars.
You dressed as Padme, Bradley dressed as Anakin. Bradley got Leia up and got her ready. After she was ready, you and Bradley got the boys ready while Leia got Gunner ready.
Leia was Princess Leia. Luke was dressed as Luke, baby Bradley was dressed as BB-8, and Gunner was dressed as Chewbacca.
Leia jumped around your room in her costume. “Momma I am so excited for trick-or-treating! Can Lukey bear and Braddie come with me?” She smiled up at you as she held onto your legs. You kissed her head. “Of course, my Leia!”
Bradley carried both of the boys down stairs while you, Leia, and Gunner trialed behind.
“WOAH!!” Leia screamed as she saw how the down stairs was decorated. She ran over to Phoenix, Hangman, and Austin giving them all hugs.
Bradley looked around at all the decor. “Damn, you guys really out did yourselves! Are we having a party?”
“Uh, duh, Bradshaw. We have to keep the tradition up.” Hangman laughed as he showed Leia around.
The doorbell rang and Austin went to get it. In came Phantom, dressed as Mr. Incredible, Evelyn as Elasta-girl, Kamalani as Violet, and Kaia as Dash.
Evelyn brought over some more goodies for the party. She made pretzel witch fingers and strawberry ghosts.
Leia screamed as the girls came through the door. “YAY! We all get to go out together!”
As the night went on more of the pilots from work started to show up for the Halloween party. Everyone was enjoying themselves. You, Bradley, Austin, Phoenix, and Hangman brought all the kids out for trick-or-treating.
You and Bradley watched on excitedly as Leia went up to every house with three pumpkins. One for her, one for Luke, and one for baby Bradley.
“Momma! Braddie and Lukey Bears pumpkins are full!” She ran over to you and Bradley with candy falling from their pumpkins.
Bradley took the pumpkins and started to eat the candy from them. You slapped his arm. “What babe? They’re not old enough to eat it yet. We can’t let it go to waste?” He started to laugh.
You all made it back home to out the boys down for a nap. You all rejoined the party.
You and Bradley played some of the games and mingled with your friends.
Hangman and Austin stole Bradley for a game. Everyone made teams of three. There were 6 teams. One team member was going to be a mummy while the other two team members wrapped the one in toilet paper.
Everyone had 45 seconds to make a mummy.
Once the timer started Bradley stood still as Austin and Hangman ran around him with toilet paper.
“WHY DID WE PICK THE BIGGEST DUDE TO BE THE MUMMY?” Hangman yelled as he ran around Bradley.
“You’re the one who wanted him to be it!” Austin yelled as he sprinted in circles around Bradley.
”SHUT UP AND HURRY UP, GUYS!” Bradley yelled at the both of them.
You and Phoenix laughed as you kept track of the time. “10 Seconds!” Phoenix yelled.
“SHIT!” Hangman panicked. “SHUT UP, SERESIN. THERE ARE CHILDREN HERE!” Bradley yelled at him.
“STOP!!” Phoenix yelled. You and her went and judged the mummies. Everyone was covered completely, but Bradley. He still had a human head and his arms were ripping out of the toilet paper.
“Well I know who is getting last place.” Phoenix laughed.
Bradley looked at the guys annoyed, “You guys suck!” He started to laugh. “Now take this TP off of me and re-roll it. I am not wasting this.”
The party went on and you all danced together to the Halloween playlist.
When everyone left, you, Phoenix, and Austin started to clean up the house. You didn’t know where Bradley, Hangman, and Leia were.
The three of you finally found them, Bradley and Hangman passed out under a table with Leia and candy wrappers everywhere.
You placed a kiss on Bradley and Leia’s head. “Like father, Like Daughter. Happy Halloween, Party Animals.”
how you get the girl (1)
🌌 now you say 'i want you for worse or for better, i would want for ever & ever' 🌌
part ii
it is widely known that anakin skywalker excels at nearly everything- except one: how to get the girl of his dreams.
words: ~4.5-5k (warning: did not proofread)
aotc anakin skywalker x padawan!ofc (+ besties padme & artoo)
best friends to lovers, miscommunication, a little angst ig?, fluff, whiny emo teenager padawans
Tumblr media
As far into her training as she could remember, Evelyn Iblis had known Anakin Skywalker; which, really, was an understatement.
The two Padawans had first met after a fateful crash in their youthful flurry in the temple’s halls- a feisty girl, and a reckless boy. Although, the latter was more bashful than the former, being a rather late newcomer after all.
In the haze of her mind, Evelyn can remember her harsh personality softening as he repeatedly warmed her up to him; gaining her trust even as a child was not easy due to her childhood before the Jedi, yet her rebellious counterpart managed to befriend her.
After days and weeks and months of Anakin constantly showing her nothing but persistent friendship, Evelyn had no choice but to fall into it, no matter how competitive they both were with each other in training- in both of their opinions making their friendship even better.
So, as the years flew by, so did the memories they made together. From younglings to Padawans, the pair were inseparable. Best friends ‘till death do they part.
And thus comes about their shared mission to protect Senator Amidala of Naboo, a close and personal friend to both. After an assassination attempt amongst a harrowing time for the Republic, the Jedi Council assigned Evelyn to escort the former queen back to her home planet, where she would wait out any danger that could jeopardise everything The Light worked for.
But Anakin being Anakin, had refused to stay behind without a fight (which, of course, he won against his Master Kenobi). Since then, Evelyn had teased him for his aggressive need to join the mission as a projection of his crush on Senator Padme.
“It’s beautiful here,” Evelyn admired as they stepped out of Theed Palace. She had never seen such an incomparable city despite her various travels to many for her missions.
“Yes, I can’t help but agree,” Padmé beamed as she led the two towards the palace, “Definitely not because I’m biased.”
At that, she gave Evelyn a sly look over her shoulder, causing the younger one to softly smile. Evelyn knew Padme as an older sister throughout the years, not only because she was just over 5 years older, but because she had had the privilege to work with her (and R2) multiple times with her Master Adi Gallia as she grew up. The unrelenting kindness, courage and intelligence Padme showed as a young leader inspired her, so she couldn’t help but feel peculiar at how the tables had turned.
As the two Padawans, R2D2 and Padme ventured out to the next transport after their meeting with the queen, a comfortable silence fell over them, save for the faithful droid’s commentary beeping.
With one hand holding a suitcase, Evelyn used her other to help R2 down the stairs with more grace than his loud thumping, laughing at his grateful whirrs.
“I’m not exactly thrilled about hiding out, but I do hope you both will find solace in where we go next,” Padme mused, “It’s incredible there, and you guys deserve a break.”
“Don’t worry, it’s peaceful enough knowing we get to ensure your safety,” Anakin assured after a beat later; and like most of the time, Evelyn faded behind them to give them space, smirking at R2 as they watched the pair.
Evelyn can just about remember a conversation with Anakin, long when she was just 10, and Anakin had just turned 11. It detailed his observation of a fellow youngling that seemed to have taken a liking to Evelyn, despite her many attempts to avoid him.
Sooner or later, she shrugged him off with Anakin’s help (beating said admirer in a lightsaber duel), but it led her curiosity to his own interests- something she felt through his Force signature.
And that was when she giddily found out about Padme, the childhood crush he reluctantly told her about. In all honesty, she was mostly happy she had leverage over him after the embarrassment of her admirer.
Yet now, seeing it in person for Maker knows how long, Evelyn’s curiosity peeked to see how it would go.
“Anakin’s hopeless, Artoo,” Evelyn said to the droid, “As his best friend, I don’t know whether to be helpful or whether to give him hell for it.”
A series of beeps and a mischievous rattle of his legs made it seem like the two were conspiring, and in a lot of ways, they often were.
Evelyn grinned, “No, no, you’re right. Hell is funnier.”
•〰️•
“I will go with Artoo,” Evelyn said firmly after some time of her arguing with Anakin. She welcomed his happy chirps following the light blush that crept up Anakin’s neck.
It didn’t help that they were both stubborn, and that Padme was patient enough to watch in amusement. Anakin could feel that even the gondoliers were relishing the childish behaviour.
They were standing by the docks, ready to board two gondolas headed for the villa. Bickering as always, the two friends argued for who would go with who- Anakin stating he’d travel on one alone with the rest of the luggage, while Evelyn proposed an even split amongst the group.
“Eve,” Anakin sighed.
R2 chimed up as he wheeled his way to Evelyn, as if mirroring her defiance. Anakin scratched the back of his neck, eyes flittering back and forth between the brunette and the droid, and muttered his defeat.
There was only ever one person who frequently won against Anakin, and he was often tired of it, if not fuelled by the challenging dynamic.
As the group moved to the majestic boats, Evelyn grabbed the last bag from the boardwalk, beating Anakin to it.
“Artoo and I weigh less,” she reasoned as a response to his scrunched expression, then dropping her voice, “You’re welcome, by the way.”
She didn’t give him a chance to respond, picking the bag up and whirling away towards the waiting droid; she could feel his eyes on her, though. Calculating and nervous was his fleeting gaze, and she suspected it was due to his upcoming time alone with Padme.
Water had never felt fresher. Weaving through her fingertips, the lake was a comfort to Evelyn as she lazily dipped her hand throughout the journey. The Force was strong here, what with the energy coursing through the creatures and their hunt, the breeze and the heat, the moon threatening the sun to conquer, the lives on these boats; it was empowering in the sense that she could feel everything.
R2 suddenly made a series of beeps and boops over the music he was playing as if to say, “You seem sad.”
Evelyn regarded him with amusement, “I’m not. Why do you ask?”
“You look more aloof than usual. Is it because of the mission?”
“No,” Evelyn smiled at the droid, “Well… part of it.”
R2 let out a sad whine, encasing his sympathy for the girl, “What else is bothering you, then?”
She fidgeted with her Padawan braid.
“It’s not important, Artoo,” she settled, trying her best to keep her eyes forward, “I might just be tired from the past few days.”
The astromech droid let out another trill, choosing to believe his friend instead of questioning her; there was potential she could push him into the water, he wouldn’t put it past her tough exterior.
“At least you can rest more here! Master Padme and Ani, and I will be with you.”
Evelyn expressed her gratitude for his comfort with a pat on his head with one of her bandaged hands, letting the air around her turn pleasant as opposed to the current gloom. Besides, she was afraid that Anakin could sense it gleaning off of her from just a few feet away.
And she wouldn’t want that. Not when part of her personal mission there was to ensure his happiness, their happiness-it had been since she found them alone in Padme’s room, the atmosphere intense through the Force.
Even if, for some reason, it had stirred up a feeling in her gut, something dark and unpleasant. She didn’t know what it was. And she didn’t like the unknown.
She pulled her knees closer to her chest, choosing to look anywhere but to her left. Just the quiet moments, let her have the quiet moments to think and feel and look completely in tune with the growing conflict inside her, one that she was already trying to push away.
The Jedi Code was something Evelyn had always been touchy with, not completely agreeing with its ideals and expectations. Anakin knew this, her Master Gallia knew this. And so, if getting the senator to reciprocate what Anakin had felt- everyday of his life for the past decade- would seal his happiness in his tough life, then she’d do it.
Because they were best friends.
That’s all they were.
Trying to engage in the conversations Padme brought up in between silences was hard, because in the corner of his eye, Anakin could see the gleeful interaction between Evelyn and R2.
There, in her combat clothing, her thick mane of wavy hair in an outrageously messy bun and her attention undivided to the landscape, she looked more serene than he had ever seen her. More thoughtful in these slow moments, a contradictory calm to her fierce persona.
Was it because he wasn’t with her? Because his incessant chatter wasn’t there to annoy her?
He knew of her motives throughout the day, playing his wingman for him and Padme. And in an alternate universe, he was sure he would be grateful. But not in this one.
“You know, if you keep this charade up, it’s going to get worse.”
Anakin shifts out of his side-glance in a snap, finding the senator bemused as she raised a pretty brow at him.
“Pardon?” Anakin slipped over his words, trying very hard to hide his fluster at him being caught.
“Ani,” Padme laughed, “It may be hard for anyone else to see, but there’s no use hiding it from me.”
She tilted her head towards the gondola a few meters next to them.
He studied her for a moment. Padme certainly wasn’t talking about the droid or the gondolier.
Anakin shook his head, looking the opposite way in avoidance of the other pair, “What am I ‘hiding’?”
“If there is one thing I’m sure about you after all these years, it’s that you weren’t and still aren’t very good at hiding your emotions.”
The Padawan let out a deep breath, cursing himself for letting the one thing that he thought strengthened him become a weakness this once. Hopefully this once.
What felt like halfway into the ride, as Artoo distantly played relaxing music in the boat next to theirs, Anakin felt more jittery than ever. He did not know whether it was because of the tight space, or the sweat dripping down his robes, but it was most certainly not because of why Evelyn thought so.
He could feel it: the mocking, the encouragement. It was flowing across the space between them as a form of communication. Through the Force, he knew what Evelyn was thinking, and it was making him more nervous than it should have.
The young Skywalker had tried to focus on the scenery he had the privilege to witness; the lush water beneath him; the unbelievably green mountains that framed the sky; the wildlife one would never see on his home planet. But in the few minutes the group had been travelling, he couldn’t.
“I don’t know what to do,” he said, uncharacteristically gloomy. In the span of a few days, he had turned from being his usual smug, confident and charismatic Chosen One self to feeling like a simple, confused blob in the galaxy.
“Well you could start by telling her that, you know, I don’t mean what I used to mean to you back then, Ani,” Padme advised lightly.
She met Anakin as a 9 year old, and she definitely knew that he had a childish crush on her after their first encounter.
“You’re all grown up,” she continued, “Both of you are- I’ve seen the two of you with and without each other. It’s…”
At her pause, Anakin peeked back at the 24 year old, hanging on to the last word with anticipation.
Padme smiled at him, her eyes lighting up with recognition of the right word.
“Different.”
Anakin had never been more lost. Even his first time picking a lightsaber up had been easier.
Padme started to chortle at the look on his face.
“Wha- no, now you’re not making any sense,” he protested, “She’s always been my best friend. And we’re jedi, we’re meant to be different. Besides, if I tell her about you, then it just means she’s gonna draw the truth out of me.”
“Well, isn’t that the goal?” Padme said incredulously, “Isn’t that why you’ve been ‘subtly’ asking for my help since we met again?”
Anakin pondered about this. What was ‘the goal’? No matter how he felt, the both of them were bound to their duties first and foremost. He knew Evelyn, and thus he knew she would see to it that what she had worked for since she was a child would pay off. But he also knew himself- albeit not very well- and his knack to break a few rules, and to follow his heart.
It was a dangerous gamble.
“Can I ask you something?” Padme asked calmly, in a manner that reflected the soothing waves embracing them.
“It’s not like you’d care if I said no…”
Ignoring his attitude, Padme continued, “Do you like her? Yes or no?”
“Yes,” the Padawan retorted almost immediately, “I mean, yeah, I think I do.”
Feeling the way he did because they were best friends versus wanting to be more than that- he did not know yet.
Even though the former queen was seemingly happy with his answer, she dug deeper, “And when did you find out that you did? As in, as more then just friends?”
The teenager was visibly troubled. When he felt the gravity of the question, he threw his hands up and shrugged.
“Why does it matter?” he complained. Feeling cornered at that moment, Anakin didn’t care whether he looked like a child to the Senator of Naboo; he was certain that the gondolier was also listening intently, even with his back to them.
“Anakin,” Padme warned with a look, “Just think about it.”
He could feel more heat creeping up his neck, taking over his cheeks and his whole chest. He blamed it on the sun.
Anakin thought hard despite himself. Unable to give her a solid answer, he let his train of thought slip out without fault.
“When she first stood up for me against the lackies of our class.”
He quickly contradicted himself.
“No, actually, it was when we had our first talk talk,” he snorted, “She was stone cold before then.”
“It might’ve been when she comforted me the first time my nightmares started.”
“I don’t know… or when I realised I didn’t like it when other guys liked her,” he smirked nostalgically, “I’m glad I beat Damon in that duel.”
“Or when she fought too hard to protect everyone on a mission, and I… I almost lost her.”
While Padme let him spill all that was on his mind, she watched his every movement- from his eyes, to the way his hands would fidget, to his small, savoury glimpses towards said woman.
Then Anakin trailed off, the distant focus perpetuating his stature like a spell.
To him, the world went quiet.
The splashing waves that were once loud in his ears mitigated, the once stinging sun simply gave him warmth, the birdsong that distracted him aided his relishing into the back of his mind.
“It was when I first bumped into her my first time at the temple,” he slowly said, chuckling fondly, “I was so lost, and I didn’t know where Obi Wan was… but when Evelyn first looked me in the eyes with so much…”
He struggled for a word.
“Indifference?” Padme suggested.
“Detachment,” Anakin countered, “She changed. I knew I was pretty much a loser when we first met, so I took her sympathy for pity. But she asked me if I needed help, and guided me back- the scrawny, dirty child- when no one would.”
He trailed off, with his hands playing with each other as they rested on his knee, the azure of his eyes unmatched by the glittering blue of the lake, his lips curved up into a small smile.
“I was so, so determined to see her again- to make sure I was good enough to see her again. One could say that… that she really was the reason I went ahead with the training. That she is the reason I’m here at all.”
It all came rushing back to him, after he realised what he had just gushed out to Padme. He didn’t think he had ever felt so overwhelmed.
“See, now was that so hard?” Padme teased lightly; he rolled his eyes in reponse.
She knew all that she had to, and she herself was delighted with having the right to know- Anakin Skywalker didn’t just have a crush on Evelyn Iblis, he was in love with her. He may not have known it yet, but it was as clear as the skies above her.
“Now,” she said, down to business, a twinkle in her eyes far brighter than any star.
“Here’s what you’re going to do…”
•〰️•
Evelyn had never felt more detached, more awkward, more lonely.
From the moment they had arrived, she had made sure to stay out of the way and keep to herself.
Like the good old days, she thought.
Once Anakin and Evelyn were escorted to their rooms shortly after their arrival, the group agreed to have dinner right away due to the hunger their travels brought.
But as they made their way to lounge on a rustic balcony for the sunset, she excused herself to bed, ignoring Anakin’s protests.
As the stars graced her with their presence, Evelyn prepared for bed in the luxurious bathroom she greedily took her time in. Her heavy hair finally dried as she sat by the window alcove- she was delighted with the lavender soap- her tired body clad in the nightgown Padme had generously provided her.
Evelyn stayed buried in the lush covers for an hour now, sinking in like the quicksand of Tatooine. She sighed in contentment, never having felt this kind of comfort in a bed before.
Yet close to finally being taken away by sleep, her mind set to work to flash thoughts behind her closed eyes.
The impending war, where her Master Gallia might be at the moment, her plan for this mission, her plan for that mission.
She also wondered if Anakin would find it easier to sleep a dreamless night.
No.
She groaned, twisting aggressively to her side at the thought.
Stop it.
And yet she wondered what would happen if he couldn’t. Would he come knocking on her door like he always did?
The judging looks they got from the other younglings were ones she couldn’t forget, not when the two had openly defied the attachment rule as children. Anakin would sneak across the temple intersection for her room, and would knock on it to find Evelyn already awake for him. It was practically a pact- one must be awake if the other is sleepless.
But no, he would probably go down the opposite direction, for she was sure that she wasn’t his first choice in this hallway.
At that, Evelyn frustratedly slammed her head the opposite side into the pillow, suddenly disdainful of the thick sheets swallowing her in.
It was going to be a long night.
•〰️•
"Did you find her, Artoo?" Anakin asked at the sound of the astromech droid wheeling into the room.
"Yes," the blue droid beeped, "But I would be more... cautious at the moment."
Anakin and Padme exchanged a look across the round dining table, the slice of fruit still floating in between them by his command.
"What do you-"
The blue-eyed Padawan shut his mouth instantly, sensing her approach through the Force- tired, frustrated, grumpy.
Evelyn appeared by the archway a second later, her long hair in its usual ponytail, showcasing the white and yellow bands in her Padawan braid- healing and combat; she was in her casual under-blouse rather than her tunic, and her face was set in a mean rest.
It wouldn't take a Force-sensitive person to recognise the chills emanating from her.
"I hope I didn't hold you guys up for breakfast." she strode to the table swiftly, her lightsaber bouncing along her leg until she pulled up a chair.
"It's quite alright, I understand you were on patrol this morning," Padme said as kindly as ever, knowing that this was still a mission to them. Accepting the slice with a light stab in the air, Padme thanked Anakin for such an amusing trick.
She looks..... exhausted.
Anakin thought as he allowed his eyes to roam around his best friend's face; dark circles hugged her sharp eyes, and even though he still thought her radiant, the tension between her brows and shoulders betrayed her.
He knew better than to ask of her troubles in public.
"Someone tumbled a bit too hard out of wrong side of the bed," he tried joking, eyes trained on her throughout while the food arrived.
"Hm, not as bad as how you got lost on your way to the sink" she gestured to his face with her fork. A small tug on the corner of her lips.
Anakin relished in their banter, and while he was relieved to know she was still herself, he wanted to find out what was bothering her.
On one end, Padme looked a bit perplexed by their blatant insults shooting across the table.
"Why didn't you tell me you were taking first watch?" he asked amidst the clashing of cutlery, "| didn't even know we were starting rounds today."
The addressee shrugged, "It's fine. You can take the 2 hours before dinner, it's just a safety precaution. We'll discuss it more later."
She directed it towards Padme more for the sake of its purpose.
In truth, Evelyn had impulsively shot out of her chambers when it was evident she wasn't going to br gifted with sleep. Taking a walk around the perimeter, her moody self only came up with the rounds after she had been caught by the villa guards.
The air hung heavy above them, even driving R2 to leave the premise.
"So, Evelyn," Padme started, "Did you like your room okay?"
Also implying 'Did you sleep at all?’
She gulped down what looked like only her 3rd bite, nodding stiffly, "Oh, yes. It is quite comfortable."
"That's great to hear."
Silence resumed.
“And thank you again for the nightgown," her hesitant addition sliced through them, “I’ve never felt anything like it."
Evelyn may be in a mood, but Maker forbid she would take it out on Padme. She didn't even know what she was in a mood about yet.
"Hey, why didn't I get a nightgown?" Anakin smirked.
"Why? Would it aid your sleeping troubles?" Evelyn feigned curiosity.
“Certainly.”
"Well then you can have mine," the female Padawan's tone dripping with sarcasm.
Padme's delicate features lit up, "Well, of course! You know, you could even take a few when you leave."
Both Anakin and Evelyn halted slicing their food, looking bewildered at the proposal.
“Wh- what?" Padme asked, unsure of the offence she might have just done.
Anakin snapped his stare at Evelyn, mind now flushed to the point of his lungs betraying him.
As he choked and hastily reached for his glass, Evelyn looked just as taken aback.
"I, uh, it's nothing to do with you, Padme," Evelyn quickly consoled, "It's just that... we're Jedi."
She hoped it was explanation enough.
“Well... yes," Padme said slowly.
She guessed not.
“We have a certain conduct to follow... and as much as I liked the nightgown, I don't think it's... the design is a bit.." Anakin's ragged choking distracted Evelyn greatly from making her point, feeling flustered by it all.
"She means to say,” Anakin gasped through the glass of water he had just gulped down, "That it's not entirely appropriate in the Jedi Temple. It would be too...”
He looked at Evelyn for help, only to find her aggressively slicing pastry into unnecessarily samll shreds.
"Revealing," he cleared his throat. The man may not have seen it for himself, but it wasn't hard to imagine-
"Oh," Padme took her time to understand, "I see.”
She started to chuckle almost uncontrollably.
"I'm sorry, I didn't realise sooner," Padme said delightfully, a stark contrast to the rattled pair, "I’ve always thought that you'd look lovely in a dress, Evelyn.”
"Careful now," Evelyn said nervously, slicing away, “You might make Ani here jealous."
Anakin mumbled something under his breath before taking another sip, but she couldn't make out any words.
"Please, it would make me feel better while we're here," Padme said imploringly, "Especially since l've planned for a few picnics and activities and whatnot to occupy us."
This was the first time Evelyn heard of this.
“Planned activities...?"
“Yeah, we were discussing it yesterday when you went up to bed,” Anakin said, finally recovered from his fit, "Whatcha get for being a buzzkill."
Evelyn sighed internally, At least they're getting the time I hoped they would.
She ignored the comment.
"I couldn't."
Padme raised a brow.
"The dresses, I mean," the Padawan clarified,
"Besides, I don't know how to wear one."
Ever the friend, Anakin snorted; he slapped his hand to his mouth to try recovering from it, but Evelyn did the honour herself and kicked him in the shin.
"How to... wear one?" asked Padme, "Why, you just slip it on!"
"Well, yes but- stop it-" Evelyn pinched Anakin's shaking arm, "But, as in, I wouldn't know how to run in it, or- or fight in it. It seems too free."
"Eve,” Padme said soothingly, reaching out to grasp her hand, "You're not going to face off an army here. The most you'll really do is patrol- and even then, I wished you guys wouldn't- and maybe shake off some wild animals."
Evelyn contemplated. It just seemed so... awkward.
As well as pitiful, given that she used to hope of a time where she would dress up nicely for herself and for...
But now, it seemed like an uncomfortable idea.
Especially when she thought she'd look ridiculously stiff next to Padme's natural grace in them.
"C'mon, Eve, I think it'd be cool," Anakin said on a more serious note, his signature smirk and oceanic gaze feeling warm on her skin.
R2 made encouraging toots from the corner of the room.
It's just fabric... you've almost died in worse situations before.
Evelyn made a move to stand, feeling too squirmish to stay in the dining room anymore. She thought it nice to let the two lovebirds have a private day together anyways, or days she decided.
“| suppose," she gave the oldest a tight smile, "Whatever you'd see fit Padme."
"Great." she responded, a hint of confusion.
"Wait- where are you going?" to Evelyn's left, asked Anakin.
"I'm quite full now, thank you" she said politely, "Plus, I’d like to visit the library here."
"Of course."
"Do you want me to-"
“I'll see you both later." Evelyn departed without letting Anakin finish. Stoic, rigid, cold.
The male Padawan gaped after her. He did not know whether this was part of her mood, or if she was maybe, possibly, probably upset with him. Padme discerned his worry and hushedly reminded him to be patient for what was to come.
Before she had turned into the corrider, however, Evelyn threw over her shoulder almost abrasively-
"Oh, and maybe next, Anakin can make a meat skewer with his lightsaber for you.”
•〰️•
To Anakin's absolute vexation, Evelyn remained withdrawn from them (specifically him?) for a while.
No matter how much he tried tracing her by asking the staff, going where she would most likely be, and even following her Force signature, his trusted friend slipped through his fingers.
So much for Jedi training...
She had always been the better of the two at that: stealth with using the element of surprise.
He hadn't spoken to her for almost 4 days now.
When he took the night round, she would already be in bed. When he took the morning round, she would already be off in her own adventures. When Padme tried to initiate rendezvous, she would excuse herself to stay at the villa for security, as Anakin would be with the senator anyways.
He would hear reports from multiple members of the staff:
"She stayed in the library."
"She is off meditating' in the gardens... whatever that means."
"I last saw her swinging that laser sword of hers around, probably practicing or something."
"Oh yes, she was sitting by the lake with a book, sir."
And even R2, who told him, "She is spending time in the property's stables."
But what bugged him most, was that whenever he knocked on her door at night, she never opened up.
Not like she used to.
"I'm telling you, she's mad at me for something else!" Anakin huffed into his hands. By the north of the lake did the politician and Padawan stay idle; the latter had been complaining since they got there.
"Anakin, don't you see?" Padme urged excitedly.
“What are you so happy about- look, this is going way worse than I thought it would! She’s never acted this way before," he groaned.
He felt utterly vulnerable. While he was never one to be afraid of emotional expression, he had never felt so aggravated, dejected and lovesick. It made him feel incorrigible.
The day beautiful, the view picturesque, the breeze calming, it was everything one would hope for at a violent time like the one they were living in.
Out of everything Anakin could have, should have, been worrying about as a Jedi, he found himself stuck in the loop he was always warned never to fall in.
He didn't care.
"Anakin," Padme giggled as she rocked back and forth, her hair intricately framing her face, "Don't you see what this could mean?"
"No," he immediately scowled, "Is it that she hates me? And I don't even know why? Like, what did I do?All I've been trying to do is figure out these- these feelings and how to get closer to her than I already am!"
"Ani, you really can't see why she might be upset?"
He threw his hands in front of him, "I don't know! Is it ‘cause I always steal her cookies? Look, she's my best friend, and she's not been acting like it since we got to this place. And I get that she's trying to play matchmaker with us, and maybe that just means that she just doesn't feel the same way- but all she's doing is driving me crazy. And she doesn't even know it!"
His rant was well-received by Padme, and when he finished, he spaced out on the ruffled lake by the breeze.
"Ani, do you remember when you mentioned Damon?"
A surge of old bitterness grew in his chest.
"What about him?"
"And what did you say you realised when you beat him in that duel?" Padme asked ever-patiently.
He scoffed, “That I didn't like it when other guys liked her-"
Suddenly, he whipped to Padme, realisation dawning on his face.
"Oh."
"Jealousy. I told you it'd get worse if you let her think of us like that," a hint of pride seeped through her humble personality.
H sighed, "It's not that simple when we're both Jedi- hell, or even if only one of us was. If I can't have her as more than just my best friend, then I don't want to try at all and then lose her completely."
"But that's the thing, Ani!" the tiny senator fought back, "You guys are lucky in that regard- no, hear me out. You have been and are best friends. Most people don't even know where to start with the love of their life; a lot of people would wish to have their partner be their best friend, too. I would.
You have to remind her how you two used to be before this whole mission, you guys were practically a married couple. Then you've gotta tell her you absolutely lost your mind trying to suppress your feelings, tell her that it drives you mad to try and hide away from her while you went and left her in the dark.
Then you tell her what you've always wanted to. And don't. Hold. Back."
Since I’m currently in a Star Wars phase, I was thinking…. How about a WondLa trilogy AU set in the Star Wars universe?
:D!!!!
It wouldn't be me if I didn't have a crossover or a couple for things I'm currently interested in, so I absolutely have a few, lmao.
I've been thinking of a post-WondLa canon SW AU wherein SW isn't in our past; rather, it's in the future and is currently set in the Prequels/Clone Wars era (my favorite :) ). I'm fudging with both canons a bit and putting WondLa several millenniums ahead of where it is in canon to fit in with the SW timeline and also saying that the galaxy is not far, far away. It's the Milky Way. SW humans are from the humans that abandoned Earth via the Dynasty Corporation and affiliated and just. Never came back.
(Continued under the cut because this got long lol)
It's been three or so years since the Battle of Solas, so Eva is around 16. My thinking is that Orbona is out in Wild Space, so it's been lost to charts and maps for a while, thus explaining why the people of SW don't know that the human home planet still exists, or even that there is a human home planet. During the War, the disaster trio (Anakin, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka) end up crash-landing on Orbona on the salt flat near Lacus and find themselves trekking from the now-broken Twilight to what they can see as the nearest civilization, which seems to be a mix of species, most of which-- barring humans-- the Jedi have never seen before. Let's say, for consistency's sake, that the aliens who ended up colonizing Earth/Orbona where from farther out, potentially the galaxy Ezra ended up in, so they're not present in the SW galaxy. Thus, the Jedi can't understand them. They, of course, manage to encounter Eva and co. and, since the humans speak Basic (or English, as the humans of Orbona know it), manage to get a rundown of where they are. (Obi-Wan's nerdy ass is incredibly excited to learn that Orbona/Earth is the planet of human origin. Think of the fossil records.)
And thus, through a series of shenanigans, Orbona is introduced to the larger galactic stage. A selection of beings from Orbona is chosen to go to Coruscant in order to present their planet to the Senate. This includes Eva, Vanpa, Rovender, and maybe Huxley? And others. Redimus is protection.
The Jedi have no idea what to make of Eva. She's extremely strong in the Living Force, but it presents itself in a way none of them have ever seen. I think she and Yoda would get along very well, to the horror of everyone else. She and Anakin would also eat bugs together.
One of the things I've been thinking about the most for this is Eva and the clones, because she, herself is also a clone, just of someone else. I can imagine they bond over that fact as well as personhood and being a second-class citizen in a place that doesn't really care for you. (Say what you want about New Attica, but Eva's status as a clone and her unique experiences were totally brushed over by the Atticans and I don't think she was super happy about that.) I think the vod'e would hear that Eva is still using her designation as her name (Earth in Vitro Alpha, ninth generation) and encourage her to find a name for herself, if she wants to. Eva Nine thus becomes Evelyn "Eva" Kitt :)
This somehow leads to Palps getting outed and ousted because I am all about fix-its in this house.
Other ideas I've had are SW characters in the WondLa setting, which I think is also very fun, but I've thought less about. For instance, the "Eva" would likely be either be Ezra or Omega due to the "naive little kid sees the world, grows up, and develops some pretty serious skills while also finding a family" thing. Ezra works thanks in part to already having similar powers and his relationship with his mentor/dad figure is similar to Eva's. Omega also works because of weird-little-girl-ness, vibes, being a clone, and a similar arc of losing a loved one and having to learn how to move on, though, in this AU, I feel like the person she loses- her caretaker- would have to be Nala Se and not a brother. (You can also insert Batcher in as Otto quite nicely. Maybe Ezra could get a Loth-Wolf?) Hunter is the Rovender, though I'd make it so he had a falling-out with his brothers instead of them being dead and that's why he left.
This also means that it's easy to insert Emerie as the Eva Eight figure, but also means that, in order for Ezra to work, there'd also have to be a bunch of Ezra clones running around. Lmao.
Evelyn found herself meditating more aggressively than usual the next morning... with a lightsaber.
After she had finished her perimeter check in just an hour, she resorted to whipping her weapon around in a never-ending storm.
Her mind was too scattered, too dark. It was consumed by feelings she had suppressed for far too long, even though they were inevitable.
The vibrations hummed in the air. and she danced along with it. As she fought the enemy in her mind, she lost herself to the flow of it, letting the Force embody her, and she the Force.
Twirling and thrusting and concentrating, Evelyn reached the peak of her combination and went for the blowing swing.
Only to find resistance on the other end.
Opening her eyes in alarm, she was welcomed with the plague himself, his saber connected ferociously to hers.
Sparks sprouted around them, their blue rays challenging each other as they pushed one another.
"I knew I'd find you here," Anakin smirked, never faltering in his engagement to her saber.
From the intersection of their blades, Evelyn couldn't help but feel a little lost at the sight of his azure eyes, seeing how it matched their twined lightsabers.
She's always subtly complimented him about it, but never in the way she thought at that very moment.
"Oh yeah?" she dared to push against him a little harder, partly as a way to scold herself, "Is that what you told yourself running 'round the past few days?"
At this she ducked underneath his arm, freeing the both of them to circle around each other.
He chuckled deeply, "So you own up to actively avoiding me?"
Evelyn tilted her head, smiling behind the spinning blur of her lightsaber.
"You know I never lie."
"Well then if you're so honest," Anakin edged on, pointing the tip of his saber towards her, "Then what say you a bet?"
Despite herself and the events of the last few days (or the lack thereof), she was open to the idea.
She did admit that she found his composed demeanor quite strange, knowing Anakin extremely well as impatient. She expected harsh questioning, annoyed monologues, nosy tendencies; instead, he was acting as anything but that. Well, to an extent-he was still his cocky self this early in the morning.
Padme's rubbing off on him, I guess.
"Go on."
"We duel." Anakin states strongly, "It's been a while, so it’s even ground. And whoever wins, gets to make the other do something."
Evelyn scoffed, "Well, that's what a bet is. I meant, what's at stake?"
"If I win, you stop acting like a hellion and join us today. No questions asked," he gazed down at her.
Huh?
"And if I win?" she stopped walking, keeping her weapon by her side.
"I leave you alone," Anakin said simply, face unreadable.
Curious.
They regarded one another for a while, eyeing the other for any foul intentions. Taking it to the next level, their reach out to each other through the Force was wide open, unlike how Evelyn had closed herself off from him for days.
And so she rushed forward, swinging the first strike.
He met her by his head, admittedly a little shocked she would go straight for his neck.
He forced her to his right, then pulled her towards him so she would spin away, allowing for him to regroup. Anakin lunged for her legs, leaving a path of light in the wake of her fast feet, backing up on her toes as preparation to jump over his head.
She landed facing his back, and snatched his defenseless side as an opportunity. But as she expected, he had blocked her, his arms twisted to cover him, and his face turned over his shoulder to peek at her determined face.
He smiled, missing this.
A battling blur of blue and white ensued, dangerously similar to lightspeed; their movement rocked back and forth, bringing balance to their battle as they danced a tango they've danced before.
Both were swift, sure and strong in their steps, and it was painfully clear that they were each other's equals as they showed no falter.
Behind her followed her streak of dark hair, as sharp as her eyes; ever following Anakin's movements, discerning, calculating, deciding. She tried to ignore how his eyes never left hers if he could help it, and how she couldn't leave his. Evelyn didn't know what made this spar so different, but it intoxicated her senses.
She blamed the heat she was feeling on their lightsabers.
On the other side of their ferocious frolic, Anakin watched her fight as his body responded naturally, for they always did a thousand times. Her eyes narrowed, her teeth gnawing on her lip, her hair falling into place; he could fight her over and over again, win over and over again, lose over and over again, if it meant he got to witness this.
Unsurprisingly, Anakin maneuvered his saber in a way that always confused his opponents. Rarely Evelyn, however, as she had seen his signature move enough to handle it. He spun it impossibly fast twice behind and in front of him, meaning to draw her attention everywhere.
He was unsuccessful.
But he was counting on that.
Her perfect-on-paper tactic to strike his legs the split second his momentum drove him upwards was met with a jump. Anakin tucked his knees up to her surprise, then scooped her lightsaber in to turn against her.
He had caged her in: her own vertically challenging the side of her face, and his horizontally threatening her throat. Yet all she could feel was his racing heartbeat behind her as he pressed her back into his chest.
She silently hoped he couldn't feel hers.
"And one more thing." she barely stopped herself from shivering when his breath tingled her ear, practically feeling his ear-to-ear grin, “You've gotta wear the dress."
•〰️•
It's shorter than I thought.
Evelyn expected as much. Padme was almost 4 inches shorter than her with a much daintier physique- of course, she would need less tightening of the soft corset attached, and it would stop above her ankles rather than her feet.
Though, the Padawan wasn't going to lie- the dress was beautiful.
Padme deserved credit for her fashion sense, for she knew well enough that Evelyn preferred simplicity and comfort, and gifted her a dress she was in genuine admiration of.
Like everything here, it was soft; lace hugging her skin as if it knew it belonged to be on her. She wasn't sure how Padme had come to know of her favourite colour, but the wispy layers of the dress were of a midnight blue, the same one would see if they looked up at the sky in the latest hours of the night.
Yes, it may have been odd given that all of her life was spent in space- one would think she would be tired of such a shade. But the night had been her friend since before she was plucked out of Canto Bight's fathier farm, always reassuring her that it was okay not to sleep, always staying with her as she told it her hopes and dreams until the sun came to ruin it all.
The straps on each side intertwined with one another, deceiving all to believe they were dark vines crawling up from the gently layered skirt, up her soft corset, across her shoulders. It wrapped her in all the right places, and she couldn't stop feeling anxious about wearing it in front of other people. Angling herself around multiple times to ensure nothing was more awkward, she scrutinised herself in the mirror.
"So this is what Padme feels like everyday," she said to herself, “Not in the same robes everyday, feeling pretty and strong.”
An all too familiar series of robotic chirps muffled through the door, and she knew R2 had come to escort her; unsurprisingly, Anakin and Padme had gone ahead.
She took a deep breath, still slightly upset she had lost the duel, and headed for the door.
"Where did you say?" Evelyn asked her companion.
They had just crossed a riverbank, encircled by large, majestic waterfalls that kissed her lightly with its teardrops.
"We're almost there! Just up ahead in the field," R2 beeped, letting out a surprised yelp as Evelyn placed him safely down on the bank.
"Hey, watch your language, Artoo," Evelyn frowned, Anakin's been talking to him too much, “Plus, I thought you could swim?"
He zoomed through the grass at the implication, afraid he'd be sent swimming back to the villa.
"Seems a bit extra for me to wear a dress like this out here, no?"
She watched her step, careful not to stain the dress.
He whirred and tittered in response, and it made Evelyn beam bashfully.
"Thank you, R2. And you look pretty, too."
It was a bright, ever sunny day, but Evelyn supposed the giant waterfalls provided them with a dew that brightened the whole field up.
She didn't know whether to be surprised or not anymore, for the flowers scattering the scene were breathtaking.
Just up ahead, was the pair sitting on a small clearing, where blades of grass turned outwards as if accommodating them.
"Evelyn," Padme gasped, cupping her face as she stood to meet the approaching Padawan, "Oh, it's so much better than I imagined!"
Padme squealed softly and held her at arms-length, observing her.
"You look amazing as well, Padme."
Indeed she did, in a floral dress that spelled out her elegance, the sun making it almost golden to the eye.
Anakin’s got one lucky ass.
"I do apologise, I didn't have anything that was longer for your height and less formal for the occasion.”
"No, please don't!" grasping her hands in return, "I can't thank you enough for your kindness. It truly is beautiful.”
"Well, it is even more so now," Padme smiled, dragging her towards Anakin, the droid and a noticeable basket in the middle, "Come! We haven't started eating yet."
"Good, Anakin wouldn't have left anything,” she joked, earning Padme's laugh.
The close attention from his gaze was not lost to her, and she couldn't bring herself to look straight at him.
But his aura forced her to. So, she looked to where he was sitting, already seeing him scan her every detail, every inch of her new look.
"So, where's your dress?" Evelyn snipped to break the ice. They sat down, and Padme began to offload the food in front of them.
"Oh, I would've worn it," he broke out of his trance and reached for a sandwich, "But I wouldn't've looked as pretty as you do right now"
Evelyn almost choked on nothing, refusing to let them see the profuse blush colouring her cheeks as she glanced down.
What lovely grass.
In all of their time together, Anakin had never called her 'pretty' out of nowhere. And even when he did, it was in the most unserious of contexts.
It wasn't to say that Evelyn never thought of Anakin as... attractive. Because he was.
It would be a crime to try and lie about that. Girls in and out of the temple would gawk and giggle as he walked past, and Evelyn would be there to watch all of it, trying her best not to let it influence her perspective.
"So, Ani," Padme brought up quickly as she sensed Evelyn's discomfort, "How did you draw our mission leader away from her duties?"
A pang of guilt rang in Evelyn's chest.
"An aggressive negotiation" they said at the same time. Though, Anakin had his mouth half-full.
"Aggressive negotiation?" Padme asked, "What's that?"
Evelyn waved a hand for Anakin to proceed, who laughed as he swallowed his food, "It's, well, a negotiation with a lightsaber.
"You guys did what now?" Padme asked astounded.
They burst into laughter, and that was the start of an afternoon that surprised even Evelyn. As if nothing had happened, the three of them bonded- talking of both surface and deeper topics, and getting up to explore the field when they found sitting tiresome.
"Careful!" came Evelyn's shriek.
The two women watched as the rebel was thrown around on a wild shaak's (as Evelyn had learned the creature was called) back, trying to maintain his balance as they unsteadily shot down the hill.
"Anakin Skywalker, you are not going to die on an animal's back on my mission!"
She assured Padme that she would retrieve him, telling her to stay put with R2. Evelyn removed her sandals, hiked up her dress and ran as fast as she could until she found a falter in the shaak’s prance.
"Then join me!" he yelled down at her. Anakin's big hand shot out, albeit bouncing up and down, and stayed there until she skeptically decided to take it.
A yelp escaped her mouth as she was tugged up, and she clung on to him for dear life when she had realised what she had done.
"Oh my word, I shouldn't be condoning this behaviour."
"Aw, c'mon, we used to do more reckless thing before this." he threw over his shoulder.
"Yes, but imagine how this would look if I had to report this back to the Council!"
"Then it'll stay a secret!" Anakin whooped, appreciating the feeling of Evelyn's arms wrapped around him.
He swerved them to the left, tightening her hold around his waist. They were both laughing to the point where their stomachs hurt, and she didn't find it so bad after all.
As they galloped towards the river, where a waterfall awaited them, Anakin tried to halt.
To no avail. His smile slowly faded. He tried again.
The shaak only seemed to gain speed, and it viciously dashed through the green and towards the roar of water.
30 meters.
"Anakin?" Evelyn's frantic call rang in his ears.
10 meters.
"Anakin!"
"Shit," he muttered. Anakin turned on his heels, taking her up into his arms and braced himself.
And just as the shaak feigned to head straight into the river, Anakin used the Force in panic to push it a sharp right, throwing them off its back and deep into the river.
The pressure hit them hard, water seizing their figures into its clutches. Evelyn felt herself wrapped against someone, and managed to open her eyes to see Anakin’s blurry figure inches away from her; strong arms wrapped around her, as if a protective shell from the impact.
Her heart dropped.
She took him with her as she rushed to the surface, ears popping to the angry bellow of the stream.
To her relief, and her wheezing composure, Anakin's blue eyes took her in, desperately surveying her, reflexively reaching for her.
"Are you okay?" he gasped nervously before she could ask. The two Padawans floated there, Evelyn's dress billowing around them.
Then she slapped him on the chest.
"Ow!"
"Why did you do that?!"
“What do you mean why did I-"
“You could've gotten yourself killed!"
"I'm sorry, are you really scolding me for prote-
"You don't need to protect me! We're both Jedi, Anakin!"
"I'm sorry, I just thought-”
"Well, don't!" she huffed. Her eyes were full of fear, and so was her Force signature- a mixture of colours that she would be ashamed to have. Colours of the dark.
Anakin saw it, and tried bringing her back to him. They held onto each other for what seemed like forever, brown meeting blue, chests heaving underwater. Her hair had come undone out of its tie, her lashes laced with droplets- he had never seen such beauty as he did then.
"Okay, I'm sorry," he said carefully, eyes shifting down to her lips dangerously. Just a split second.
She noticed how close they were, and she couldn't resist roaming her stare to his wet hair, his strong jaw, his eyes.
"But you have to admit that was fun,” he quietly said in between them, and it bled the red out of her mind, turning into soothing blue and starlight, like he always managed to do.
“Yeah," her eyes flickered down too, a smile creeping up her own, "It was."
Evelyn welcomed his scent to wash over her, mixing with the smell of fresh water and wind blown grass.
Anakin couldn't believe he had always had the privilege of being this close to her all his life, but only noticed how much he couldn't bear to be without it now.
Did she perhaps feel as tortured as he did?
Was this it?
Was this the moment he had been waiting for?
Surfacing from the depths out of nowhere, her lightsaber caught her attention.
And so she decided not.
The young Jedi pulled away, blinking rapidly as she kicked to the shore, a confused Anakin just on her toes.
The red fog was back, and this time it was consuming both of their hearts.
"Now can you just tell me what's wrong?" he asked frustratedly, trudging out onto the bank.
She angrily hauled the wet dress that weighed her down, now dead from its wistful life just moments before.
"What?" she asked stiffly, her back remained turned to him.
He who couldn't care less about how cold he felt from the water, ridding himself of his leather vest and outer robe to catch up to her.
"Seriously? You've avoided me since we got here, and it's been annoying the shit out of me."
"There's nothing wrong," she turned to him, wet waves accompanying her rigid features, "And even if there was, why would I necessarily need to tell you?"
"Because you always have no matter what" his feet automatically followed her traipse up the bank, long strides getting him next to her in no time, "We always have."
She visibly struggled to walk away faster in her sopping dress.
"Well, you don't need to know everything about me."
"But I do!"
"Well we're just friends, Anakin!" she did not stop, one expressive hand flinging in the air, "Sometimes, I wanna have my own mind to think with, and sometimes you'll have to deal with things yourself, too!"
At that, his anger flared. He grabbed her wrist and turned her equally enraged face to him.
"What is going on with you?" he exclaimed.
"Nothing!"
She yanked her wrist away from him, and they were face to face, having an almost-screaming match.
"Bullshit.”
"Look, you have every opportunity to talk to someone you genuinely care about, someone you’ve really liked since we were kids," she swung her arm behind her, implying Padme, "Her door is right next to yours, and I'm giving you a chance to do what you can't when we leave."
Anakin swallowed. He'll take the chance.
"Are you... jealous?"
"What? Why would I be jealous?"
He shook the sinking feeling off.
"Well, I am worried about you, Eve," his voice rose.
She turned back around, striding once more; he followed.
"There's no need, nothing is wrong."
"You're lying through your teeth." he heatedly said to her as they walked, "And you told me you never lie."
"And because that's so, maybe this is a reflection of your inability to trust me or be wrong,” she hollered back.
"No, Eve! I know you better than anyone else in the world- in the whole goddamn galaxy," he pointed an accusatory finger at her, "You're acting just like how you used to when we first met."
"No, I'm not! I'm just making sure you and Padme get all the time you can!" her strong voice wavered.
He stopped in his tracks, breathing heavy, looking at her longingly.
"But why does that have to come at such a steep cost?"
"What?" she whipped around, not quite believing what she heard.
"I feel like I'm losing you, Eve. It feels like you're making me choose when at the end of the day- at the end of it all- you are my best friend. And I refuse to let you go that easy."
"Ani-” she shook her head.
Breathe, trying her best not to let tears fall. Not here, not now.
"You're stuck with me, like you were 10 years ago, whether you like it or not.”
Both of them panted at the speed they had been playing chase, and they stood there planted, gouging out what was next to come.
She took a deep breath, letting go of her skirt and tucking her wet hair behind her ears out of habit.
"Ani, I am making you choose. Because the two of us, we, break the Code everyday, every mission, every second we serve under the Order."
"Well, then-"
"But you and Padme can hide this with the distance as horrible as it sounds. You guys can survive through it," Evelyn pushed past his urge to interrupt, "We have and will always be looked down on for being... best friends."
She couldn't stop it anymore; her voice broke as she looked away from him, suddenly cursing the sky for setting into the night that she loved.
"…What are you saying?" he croaked. The world had never been quieter.
“Maybe I'm telling you to make the right choice.
And it isn't me."
•〰️•
Traveling back was painful. Dinner was painful. Going to bed was painful.
It tormented Anakin to know that this was what heartbreak felt like, and he didn't know whether he would be able to mend it.
He didn't need to go to sleep to face a possible nightmare, for he felt he was already living in one.
The stars cried for him, pouring out compassion through their twinkling lights. There, in his bed with the moonlight bathing him, did his sorrows lie. Fear, anger, hate lead to the dark side; but every time he was scared, it drove him to fight harder. To fight harder for her. And why was that so bad?
But when has he ever liked losing? When had he ever been obedient?
Never. Especially not with her. But ultimately, she had chosen him over herself, prioritising him over whatever she may or may not have felt; it saddened him even more.
Anakin swung the duvet out of his way, leaning his elbows into his knees. Taking his loose, camel-coloured shirt from a chair, he slipped it on and treaded for the balcony with a tired rub of his eyes.
Stepping out into the cool midnight air, he looked to his right, a small twinge of hope to see Evelyn on her own balcony, melancholy dripping off of her.
But she wasn't there.
Of course she isn't.
She was the one who found solitude in her self-control. When she made up her mind, it was often too hard to change it.
He knew she was right deep down; he just couldn’t believe that he had lost her in the snap of his fingers, when he spent so long to even get close to her.
The cool stone ledge under his hands comforted him in a strange way, in a manner that even the stars couldn't; it grounde him back to reality, back to his present, back to the light of the Force-
Evelyn?
In the distance, just about to detach from the dock, was Evelyn's undeniable silhouette aboard a gondola.
Alarm rang throughout his body, and he stumbled around in a rush to get her.
No doubt, he would go after her.
Anakin pushed off from the balustrade, and ran faster than he ever had- through the dark corridor, down the grand staircase, and towards the docks.
"Eve!" he bellowed, running down countless steps, not keeping in mind who could've heard him.
For once, he thanked the years of rigorous training for his stamina. One foot in front of the other, he raced time to see Evelyn drifting further and further away from the shore- from him.
"Eve!" he cupped his hands over his mouth, heaving from the rush while he dreadfully stood at the very edge of the wood.
She didn't turn. She was painfully still, too; he feared the worst.
Was she leaving them? Was she under some sort of trick? Did someone get to her? Was she-
No.
Like always, Anakin acted impulsively, this time fuelled by an intoxicating amount of adrenaline.
He jumped.
He dove through the water less gracefully than he'd hoped, and swam until his whole body burned.
Don't go. Don't go. Don't go.
In time, the cold sting of the water motivated him to keep going.
Stroke by stroke, he could feel her presence intensify, and he had never been so glad to bask in it.
Seeing the tail of the gondola in the short moment he went up for air, Anakin stopped, grabbing onto it.
"Anakin?" he heard through muffled ears.
Thank the Maker.
Her startled face was illuminated by the blue glow of her lightsaber, but he didn't care, pulling himself up to join her from the loud splashing he had caused.
"What are you doing out here?" he gasped in confrontation.
"What are you doing out here?" she retaliated; no bags, not even properly dressed, nothing. He suddenly felt a little stupid; she’s had her fair share of sleepless nights, too.
Even after the ridiculous ordeal, as he shivered, he soaked in her perfect hair blanketing her shoulders, her sharp eyes softened just for him, and her in just her nightgown and robe.
Have mercy on me.
"Anakin Skywalker, are you insane?!" she tucked her lightsaber behind her, rushing to remove her robe to leave her arms and legs exposed to the cold air. She wrapped him in it, even though it was too short on him.
"Yes," he blurted out, "Deeply. For you. You've driven me mad. Crazy. Deranged."
He realised she was only half-listening, too preoccupied with drying him off.
"Clearly," she continued to pat him down- trying to ignore his nearly translucent shirt displaying the contours of his muscles- scowling through concentration, “What were you thinking? I could've sliced you in half! And you scared the shit out of me!"
“Please just listen to me," he implored, trying to catch her eye.
So, this is what she looks like in a nightgown.
He could definitely get used to it.
"What the hell are you talking about?" she sat back down across from him, boat rocking back and forth,"You could get sick!"
"Listen-"
"I can't take care of both Padme and you. You must be out of your mind to have just done that!"
"Can I just-"
"You've been acting half out of your mind since we got here," she harshly told him off.
"Evie."
She shut up from the urgency in his voice. Her face in that upset pout Anakin loved whenever he annoyed her, she waited.
'Then you tell her what you've always wanted to. And don't. Hold. Back.'
"Eve," he gulped, "You've been my best friend for, well, for a long time. It's been a long 10 years."
"Yeah, no shit."
"And I was too afraid, too cowardly," Gods, he was really doing this, "To tell you what I wanted."
He could tell she was still mad at him, especially given that she had completely closed her mind off from him.
"I want you," he whispered so softly, as if it might break them apart, "For worse or for better."
He kept his eyes on her, her increasingly surprised self. The more he spoke, the more he betrayed the Code.
To hell with it.
"I would wait for you, forever, no matter how long it takes. And I- I know I've broken your heart... but I want to be the one to put it back together. And to protect it, cherish it, love it."
He reached out to take her hand, pleased to find that she didn't pull back.
"If you will have me, the way I want you."
Something so wrong had never felt so right, and he was so addicted. Now, he didn't hold himself back from staring at her- his best friend.
Love may be forbidden in the Order, and both Padawans have continuously disagreed with it. To bring 'peace' meant to protect, to protect meant to love, and to love meant to fight. It didn't mean they were drawn to the Dark Side, but rather that they embraced the challenges, to know how to fight it, to beat it.
"But..." she finally sniffed out, the gleam glossing her eyes looking majestic to her partner in crime, “What about Padme?"
Anakin couldn't help but laugh, even though the face she made told him it was wrong.
"Eve," he held onto both of her hands now, "She helped us get together, helped me even get to this point. I was so lost, and when we finally saw her again, I knew I needed help from someone I could trust.”
At that, a tear finally rolled down her smooth cheek; Anakin gently wiped it away. She rarely cried, and he vowed the first time she did years ago to wipe it all away.
“I'm sorry if I made you think otherwise," he sincerely apologised, tucking her loose strands behind her ear, "I was too scared of our duty. Only to realise that I only did this- do this- duty because of you. It's always been you, even when I told you about Padme when we were kids. Even when Damon dared to challenge me in the courtyard."
I think I'm doing pretty alright with this.
“But what about the Code? And Master Kenobi and Gallia? And the rest of the Order? Ani, it's already been hard living everyday with the thought that something might happen to you, and now-"
She slapped his chest in the midst of her rant; it was a normal occurrence for them.
“You fucking sociopath!" she seethed through her flowing tears now, "Could've told me earlier!"
His laugh reverberated through his chest. He pulled her close to him, and pressed a tender, loving kiss on her forehead; so full of his caged emotions.
And so he realised, she, too, was betraying her whole life's purpose for this. For them.
“We'll figure it out. And, I mean, judging by your reaction," he pulled away, playing with her Padawan braid, "You feel the same way?"
She glared up at him, aggressively wiping her cheeks, "Yes, you dumbass! You should've told me before I looked like a fool, running around to get you two together for the past month!"
"I know," he sheepishly said, "I really wasn't good at the whole love thing. But what Jedi is, right?"
Her bottom lip quivered ever so slightly, and she sniffed, "Lo- you... love me?"
He smirked at her.
"I mean... I could not, I guess."
"Yeah? We’ll see how that goes waterboy," she threatened, giggling at his embarrassment.
Gods, he wanted to kiss her.
“You’ve always been and are so beautiful,” he cupped her warm cheek in his hand, “Almost lost my shit when I saw you in that dress.”
They both chortled, reminding themselves of the unpredictable day they had had.
“And we have got to sneak some of those nightgowns back,” Anakin’s smirk grew twice the size when she hid her face from him.
He realised he was wrong.
He believed now that in every universe they existed in, he would always find his way to her, he would always choose her, and he would always love her. Always.
"I love you," he confirmed.
Her eyes came up to flash in between his.
"Okay"
Huh?
Anakin's eyes bulged out.
"What-"
"I'm just kidding," she chuckled.
Her hands small compared to his own, though to him fitting perfectly, tugged him closer by her robe around his broad shoulders.
A canvas of colours blurred their visions, the pair allowing the paints of their passion taint the Force flowing between them.
She dared to creep closer, their knees brushing against one another, and she said with the most depth as she could, drawing straight from her heart,
"I love you."
“You promise?" he loved her smile, even if it was tinted with tears and her natural blush; he mirrored it unconsciously.
Evelyn tilted her head playfully, "I never lie to you, remember?"
With Padme and R2 cheering from their balcony as faithful witnesses, with the night sky ceremoniously hosting them as a mutual friend, and with the stars gifting them their blessing-
They kissed.
•〰️•
“You just lied to me again."
"…Yeah...we have a lot to talk about…”
•〰️•
Chapter 52
(Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/40473339/chapters/110485891#workskin)
"So I was reading my contract on the toilet and turns out, I get a bonus if we make it to the World Series" is from A League of Their Own. (I presume Obi-Wan was reading his contract at his desk, however, like a normal person.)
The Kin Care Act is real; I just don't think it's all that helpful. Your boss still has to agree to let you take the time, and all it does it 'let' you use your sick time instead of your vacation time.
This is an extremely small callback but, once again, Obi-Wan found a school just fine, he just couldn't figure out how to actually get inside it.
I realized after I wrote this, but obviously didn't bother to change it, that Padme probably actually would have worn her own graduation regalia, from when she'd graduated with her master's, to this ceremony. (Maybe she only rented hers when she graduated? Let's go with that.)
Tips for attending graduation: Bring your own snacks! And make reservations for somewhere to eat afterward at least a month in advance! Anywhere good to eat close to the ceremony is going to be swamped immediately afterward with people who didn't plan ahead. (I once sat behind a family that brought an entire pepperoni pizza with them, and I thought, those are people who know what's up.)
Mortarboards are both ugly and uncomfortable, but at least they're fun to decorate, I guess.
Wolffe and Mr. Plo will become relevant again later, after Anakin and Padme's wedding and honeymoon.
Oh, no, we've given Obi-Wan too much free time to brood. Depression alert!
As someone who watched Pete's Dragon approximately one million times throughout their childhood, the way I picture the 'Anakin and Obi-Wan running to each other for a hug' scene is remarkably similar to the end of that movie when Paul gets off the boat and Nora realizes he's not dead.
Extremely different contexts, but "every damn day" is a nod to maybe my favorite line in the 1999 cinematic masterpiece The Mummy, when Evelyn asks Rick if he swears. "Every damn day!"
