“I have to ask you something but I don’t think you’re going to like it.”

These words were all said into mouths and muffled against lips, just about understandable as the two girls kissed heatedly. Eventually, after a few more minutes, Verity groaned and pulled away from the kiss, half sulking as she looked down at Josette. “We can go back to kissing afterwards.”

“Fine, what is it?” Josette asked, her hands moving to Verity’s thighs once she sat up. They were in Josette’s dorm room, a free period and an absent teacher giving them the perfect opportunity to have the room to themselves for the hour with no fear of anyone walking in. Outer robes had been shed and were now lying on the floor next to the bed, though they were still modestly dressed for the most part.

Verity looked down at her, studying the amused look in her eyes as she looked right back, and the slight swollenness to her lips after twenty minutes spent kissing each other. She pushed her hair behind one ear, pausing before she spoke again. “What are we?”

There was a pause. A lull in which Josette’s face went from confusion to understanding to surprise, a small crease forming in her brow. Verity, who had absolutely no idea what that expression meant, decided to keep talking since the blonde didn’t seem to know how to respond.

“Liiike,” she started casually, drawing the word out. “Are we.. just having fun or...friends with benefits… or… I don’t know... girlfriends or like… not girlfriends yet but like dating except dating is just snogging and feeling each other up because we can’t actually go anywhere to date, or secret dating or something or… just experimenting… you’re just exploring your sexuality and I’m who you’ve chosen to do it with. Or something else! They’re just all the ideas I had. Or, nothing and you like haven’t thought about it at all?” she asked, one hand playing with a strand of her hair as she finished her rather rambly question. There was another beat of silence after she spoke, Josette looking just as stunned as before. Almost instantly Verity regretted opening her mouth at all.

“Shit, sorry,” she groaned, climbing off Jo’s lap and sitting beside her on the bed instead. It didn’t really feel right to be sitting on her lap while she very clearly felt incredibly awkward. Josette moved to sit up properly, her hands moving to the mattress as she pushed herself up and Verity continued to ramble on. “Sorry, I just-- I want to know what I’m doing here. Are you just exploring your feelings for girls? Which, I totally get so I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. I’ve been there, done that. I just need to know so I know that all we are is friends and this is just something separate. It’s hard to figure out and figuring it out with a friend is nice so I’m not saying no just.. You know, I need to know. Or is this maybe more? Are we dating other people or are we not? Alexander asked me out yesterday and while I didn’t want to go anyway, he’s such a sleaze, I didn’t know if I could.”

Again, Verity was rambling on while Jo sat in silence, that beat passing once more before eventually she spoke.

“What do you mean been there, done that? With who?” It wasn’t a question Verity expected, or the direction she wanted the conversation to go in, but glad Jo was at least talking again, she answered.

“Oh. You know Georgia?” she asked, referring to one of her friends in her own year. “The Summer I went away with her family we sort of.. Had a thing.”

“Georgia?” Jo repeated. “I didn’t think you’d be her type.”

“Charming. Why wouldn’t I be?” she asked, a frown on her face and sounding actually rather annoyed by the assumption.

“No, Ver, that’s not what I meant. Just, isn’t she seeing that super nerdy Ravenclaw? Who plays Quidditch with the short black hair?”

“Yes.”

“So you see my point?”

“..A little,” Verity relented, her frown softening. “But whatever, it’s not like we were a thing thing, we were just.. Experimenting. But it was never explicitly said at first and then we spent so much time together, doing stuff I had never done with anyone else, and I thought it was more. And it wasn’t. Which was embarrassing and awkward. We got over it and we’re friends again now so it was fine but I don’t want that awkward stage with you. I just want it clear so we both know where we stand. I don’t want either of us to ever feel like someone’s misreading things or feeling differently.”

“I get that..” Jo said slowly, nodding along with her words. “I-- I don’t know what we are,” she answered, glancing down and up at Verity and then back down again.

“What do you want to be?” Verity asked, straightening her posture slightly as she looked to Josette, reading for whatever answer may come.

“What do you want to be?”

“Jo, stop, I asked you.”

“So you don’t have an opinion?”

“Of course I have an opinion, I started this whole conversation.”

“Then why can’t you just give your opinion.”

“Because I asked.”

“You asked first so I have to answer first? Come on, Ver.”

“Come on, what? I did ask first.”

“So?”

The replies were coming faster and with more frustration as the conversation went on, the two girls practically snapping at each other when Verity finally just stopped, shaking her head. “You know what, nevermind, Jo. I think that answers what you want without you having to say so,” she said, turning to sit with her legs off the bed, slipping back on her shoes and pulling up her cloak. “I don’t mind doing whatever you want to do, Jo but I deserve an answer and not to be left in some weird sort of lingo. I’m not a girl waiting by a phone to see if a guy will call. I’m not that girl and I never will be that girl. Just the same, I won’t be the girl trying to figure out whether we’re friends or more than friends or what. I can’t do it, for one thing, I couldn’t keep my mouth shut if I wanted to.” While she spoke she stood up, looking down at Josette on the bed while she folded her cloak over her arm.

“I love you, Jo; you’re my best friend, but I also like you. And I need to know what I’m going into or I can’t do this. I don’t want to end up liking you in a way that’s not returned or appreciated, or something that could jeopardize our friendship,” she said softly, giving a small smile and a shrug. “You figure out what you want and I’ll get on board,” she finished, giving her another smile before walking towards the door.

Despite what she said, Verity couldn’t help feeling like her answer very much did matter. She knew that there were certain answers that would leave her a little disappointed, even if she got on board with any option.

“Wait, Ver.” Just as she reached the door, Josette spoke and she turned around curiously, watching her hurry off the bed and walk over to her. Stopping just in front of Verity, she shook her head. “Don’t go. I want you here.”

“Jo, I’m literally just going to the common room, you can come if you want. Don’t be so dramatic,” Verity replied teasingly, rolling her eyes.

“Did you just call me dramatic?” Jo asked with a half laugh.

“Yes.”

“You?”

“We can both be dramatic.”

“No one could be as dramatic as you.”

“Whatever,” Verity laughed. “I’m going, I’ll see you at dinner.” But once again as she reached for the door, Jo told her to wait and she turned back with another roll of her eyes.

“I’m sorry. You just.. Caught me off guard. It’s not that I haven’t wanted to think about what we are or what we want I just… I’ve been to scared because I didn’t think… I thought the only option was just keep doing what we’re doing. Kissing and then not talking about it,” she said, nervously looking over at Verity as she took a small step closer. “I just know I don’t want to stop,” she whispered, glancing down at her lips before meeting her eyes. “This isn’t just about choosing you to experiment with. I love you and I like you too,” she added. And there was that beat of silence, this time from Verity’s end as the words hung in the air.

She was confused honestly, not sure what it meant or where it left them.

“So what do you want, Jo?” she asked softly, meeting her gaze carefully.

“I..”

Verity watched her, searching for the right words or what she wanted or how to react. Before she could make any sense of Josette’s silence and expressions, she was pulled into a kiss. Jo’s hands cupped her face and Verity just stood in shock for a second or two before reciprocating, her hands moving to her waist. She moved closer as Josette’s lips moved against hers, the kiss different than any of their others. It was heated, yes, but focused, like it would say everything they weren’t quite ready to say out words.

“Jo..” Verity started, her voice sounding almost pained as she started to pull away from the kiss, needing the words. “I can’t. I can’t, I’m going to like you more than I should, I already like you more than I should. If you kiss me again I need to know what it means-”

She was cut off by another kiss, this time Jo’s words muttered back in return.
