( odeya rush, cis female, she/her, muse a ) oh snap! is that SERAFINA HOLMES? they work over at high volume where some of the other employees have labeled them as THE BENEVOLENT. that’s probably because they can be a bit ( compassionate ) but also pretty ( diffident ) they’re TWENTY-THREE and they’ve been living in woodstock for TWENTY-ONE years. it must be their shift because i totally hear THE VERVE blasting from the record store. ( expensive perfume, discarded music sheets strewn across the room, perfectly manicured nails ) [ BONNIE, TWENTY-TWO, EST, SHE/HER ]
PINTEREST. PLAYLIST. INTERVIEW.
BASIC INFO:
name: serafina richelle holmes
nickname(s): sera
birthday: september 7th, 1976
zodiac: virgo
hometown: woodstock, il
gender: cis female ( she/her )
sexual orientation: bisexual
height: 5′5
eye color: light blue
hair color: brown with highlights
tattoos/piercings: butterflies on her ribcage, ears both have double piercings
family: richelle holmes ( mother ), samuel holmes ( father ), sammy holmes ( older brother )
ABOUT:
both of sera’s parents grew up in woodstock, they never got the opportunity to travel outside of the city, but they still loved it enough to raise a family there
the two of them were high school sweethearts, even got married before their first semester at the local community college
within five years, they had given birth to their first born, sammy and then two years later, sera was born
sera’s brother has always been boisterous and unapologetically himself, sera couldn’t imagine being the same way
often, sera was just there observing wherever she went, and she never really went out of her way to speak to people
in her household, she watched her older brother constantly argue with their parents, and she never wanted to be on either side of those conversations
she became the perfect daughter that they began to dote on, and to keep that, sera would always do whatever they asked
she’s always been gifted in music, and it’s something her parents instantly picked up. she tried many instruments, but she mostly stuck with piano + strings
in high school, she was a constant overachiever. played sports, was in band, in accelerated classes. you name it, she was most likely in it. she eventually graduated top of her class and received an offer from juilliard to study music composition there
at first, she loved being in the city and surrounded by music and people that shared the same sentiment and goals that she did.
however, she realized the stakes were high and the expectations higher. sera tried her best to keep up with her classmates
it was when she had a disagreement with a tutor of hers that she finally left it, withdrew from the school, and was on a flight back to illinois within a week
it’s not something she’s proud of, walking away when things got difficult, but now she’s back in woodstock ( and has been for a little over a year or so ) trying to find that love of music that she used to have
personality wise, sera is a textbook people pleaser and has always struggled with telling people no, and she will always drop everything to help you out
it’s also her fatal flaw; she’ll never express her own feelings and would rather continue to let people walk over her due to her fear of confrontation
however, now that she’s back in town and has gotten a job finally, she’s done some self-reflecting and wants to use this time to improve herself and find out what she really wants to do in life
WANTED CONNECTIONS:
best friend from high school: maybe they were friends before sera went to ny and now that she’s back they’ve started to get back together
people she tutors: sera’s probably put advertisements around town if anyone wants any music lessons
bad influences: sera is too stuck up, i am begging someone to help her live a little
coworkers that don’t get along: either they don’t like her attitude of how everything needs to be right all the time or she doesn’t necessarily like the way they do things when they work the same shift
potential roommates: maybe someone who has an open room in an apartment or is about to, she doesn’t necessarily want to always live with her parents
literally anything y’all can think of i will be down for!

Phantom AU: “The Unmasking”
Here we go with another scene. In case anyone was wondering about how this would go, here it is:
Elizabeth’s mind rose from its slumber as she laid in her bed. Her eyes opened, unable to see much due to darkness covering every nook and cranny. She slowly sat up, turning her head left and right. “Spring Bonnie?” she asked groggily. “Where did you go?”
A faint hum emitted from another room. It sounded like Spring, but it didn’t feel like him. In fact, it almost felt like… Elizabeth climbed out of bed and carefully made her way to the door. She cautiously pushed the door and peered outside. A light streamed from downstairs as if to guide her way. She took this offer and crept from the staircase to the living room below. There, she saw Spring Bonnie musing over some papers. “What are you doing, Mr. Spring?” she asked gently, looking over the top of his head.
”Oh, just going over the sheet music for a project of mine,” Spring said warmly. “I was going to play it on your dad’s piano, but I didn’t want to wake you up so early. You had so much fun at Fazbear’s with me yesterday, and then the scare you had when I showed you those old models—“ His voice stopped with a quiver. “S-sorry about that, by the way,” he murmured, his jolly voice dampened by genuine sadness. ”I just thought you were ready.”
”Ready for what?”
Spring’s ears yanked up. ”W-Well,” he stuttered, turning to his head to try to face her, “I guess you’ll find out soon, you curious bunny. In the meantime, do you mind if I play my music for you? That way, we can find out how it sounds together.”
”Sure,“ Elizabeth smiled. ”I’d love to hear what you’ve got for.. whatever this is.”
Without any warning, Spring Bonnie clambered out of his seat and skipped to the piano. He sat down on the piano bench and lifted the instrument’s lid. Realizing he was a little too fast for his protégée, he sheepishly chuckled and waited for her to join his side. Then, when all felt right, he set the sheet music on its stand and played the first section. It was a reworking of Swan Lake’s prologue, complete with the somber flute solo now transposed to the highest section of piano keys. Of course, Spring fumbled due to his padded fingers, but neither seemed to mind.
As Elizabeth listened, a faint memory seemed to come alive. Her father, almost sitting at that exact spot, playing the original opening. Herself, sitting nearby, listening with a wandering yet interested attitude. Her two older brothers were nowhere to be seen, since they were both at school. It was just Daddy and her. Even when the thundering “spooky” part came, she still felt safe because he was with her. A safety that resurfaced as Spring Bonnie now lingered on that same passage.
The chords tossed her back into reality, where she finally noticed something she hadn't before. Along Spring‘s mouth, there was a very faint seam. And that very faint seam led to a small indicator about his head being a hatch. Her eyes lit up with a realization. “What if there’s someone in there?” she pondered in her head. “What if… it’s Daddy?“ She stared at the focused rabbit seemed to pour his heart and soul into the music. “I hope he doesn’t mind if I try,” she thought as she stepped behind him. Then, as the song finally reached its first suspenseful climax, she pulled back on his ears.
The mouth opened just enough. A gasp deeper than Spring’s voice came out of the suit. The music plummeted into silence. “Lizzie,” the voice rasped inside, “why are you pulling my ears so hard? Don’t you know that hurts?”
Liz was about to tell him to cut the act, but the drop in his pitch stopped her. “Daddy?” she asked, leaning over to see if she could look inside. “Is that you?”
”Let go of my ears and I’ll show you,” the voice offered, still carrying that Spring Bonnie tone.
Elizabeth obeyed, watching the top half drop back down with a click of its buck teeth. She took a few steps back, fearing the worst. Her eyes followed Spring Bonnie as he calmly rose to his feet. “Before I show you, I want you to know that I’m not mad,” he began, turning to face her. “In fact, this moment was exactly what I was referring to. I just hope your reaction to me is better than the one you gave to those other animatronics.” He then put his hand on the back of his head, did a readjusting maneuver, and lifted the top half.
It was open just enough for Elizabeth to get a good look. In the lamplight, she could see a thin, withered face with so many strange scars. Two of which being crescent-shaped gashes on his neck that was barely visible in the suit. His thinned hair was a mix of brownish-black and white. As for the eyes, they obviously didn’t match the suit. One seemed to be a little more slack than the other, while both were a silvery-blue color. It was all of these traits that made Elizabeth alarmed but not frightened. What really scared her was the fact that she was right after all. Her father, withered and scarred, was in that suit.

THE MEGA RP PLOTTING SHEET / MEME.
First and foremost, recall that no one is perfect, we all have witnessed some plotting once which did not went too well, be it because of us or our partner. So here have this, which may help for future plotting. It’s a lot! Yes, but perhaps give your partners some insight? Anyway BOLD what fully applies, italicize if only somewhat.
Mun Name: Leo Age: 27 Contact: IM, Inbox, Disco
Character(s) I rp: Canon: Shiro, Sebastian, Dirk, Kyoya, Kurama, Nelliel, Maka, Dwicky. OCs: Hades, Google, Emogene, Dominic, Seirios, Iso, Felix, Reeves, Nyx, Zeru, Ren, Charlie, Dakota, Nemo, Bluejay, Koko, BD, Raven, Cora, Sammie, Lucie, Poppie, Ollie, Alphie, Bambi, Abbigail, Hiraeth, Bonnie, Rei, Rory. Which muse(s) inspires you the most atm?(for MM): Nelliel, Shiro, Rei, Bonnie, Hiraeth. Current Fandom(s): Bleach, V/LD, Naruto. (I’m not deeply involved in the fandoms themselves anymore.) Fandom(s) you have an AU for: Uhhhhh.. I basically have an AU for any fandom if I know it well and am asked for it. My language(s): English. (I’m learning other languages but I don’t RP in them unless it’s just a sentence or two.) Themes I’m interested in for rp: Fantasy / Science fiction / Horror / Western / Romance / Thriller / Mystery / Dystopia / Adventure / Modern / Erotic / Crime / Mythology / Classic / History / Renaissance / Medieval / Ancient / War / Family / Politics / Religion / School / Adulthood / Childhood / Apocalyptic / Gods / Sport / Music / Science / Fights / Angst / Smut / Drama / etc. Themes/Genres you have an AU for: Modern, Mythology, Medieval.
Preferred Thread length: one-liner / 1 para / 2 para / 3+ / novella. (I legit love all lengths, tbh, it’s more so with one-liners I tend to lose interest if there’s no substance to further it.) Asks can be send by: Mutuals / Non-Mutuals / Personals / Anons. Can Asks be continued?: YES / NO only by Mutuals?: YES / NO. Preferred thread type: crack / casual nothing too deep / serious / deep as heck. Is realism / research important for you in certain themes?: YES / NO. Are you atm open for new plots?: YES / NO / DEPENDS. (I’ve admittedly been v busy, so if you’re fine with me takin’ forever-- YES) Do you handle your draft / ask - count well?: YES / NO / SOMEWHAT. How long do you usually take to reply?: 24h / 1 week / 2 weeks / 3+ / months / years. I’m okay with interacting: original characters / a relative of my character (an oc) (It really depends here.) / duplicates / my fandom / crossovers / multi-muses / self-inserts / people with no AU verse for my fandom / canon-divergent portrayals / au-versions (as main or only verse). Do you post more ic or occ?: IC / OOC.(I post more IC, but the gaps between IC and OOC make it seem like there’s more OOC at times???) Are you selective with following others?: YES / NO / DEPENDS. (This is entirely because half the fandoms some of my muses come from are absolute shit so I have to be careful.)
Best ways to approach you for rp/plotting: IM or Inbox-- tbh, Just kick my inbox in and screech that you wanna plot/rp with me so long as you’re a mutual. I’m honestly so laid back?? Sure, it might take me a minute but this is entirely because IRL things and not because I’m putting anyone off.
What expectations do you hold towards your plotting partner: Having fun? Having ideas? I guess, just, mutual interest? I mean, I’m here to write! I’m here to have fun! If you’re not interested in that much alone then?? I guess bye?? ‘Cause I’ll become very annoying to anyone who doesn’t have an interest purely because I’ll randomly ambush my partners with excitement and ideas.
When you notice the plotting is rather one-sided, what do you do?: Oh I’ll just straight up ask if they want to continue the thread or start a new one! I mean, I get it, you can lose interest or otherwise just not feel it anymore and that’s fine! If you’re not interested in that particular thread, then no worries, we can always start more! If you’re just being one-sided in general, however?? I’m not gonna be interested at all and I’ll likely tell you as such.
How do you usually plot with others, do you give input or leave most work towards your partner?: Normally it’ll just happen? I’ll do my “Hey what if they ___” thing and then a rapid bombardment of inquiries and excitement later, there is a thread. It’s usually mutual, the involvement of creating this plot, but sometimes it’s just me being excited and them being excited and then suddenly BAM THERE BE THREADS. S’all good over here!
When a partner drops the thread, do you wish to know?: YES / NO / DEPENDS. - And why?: I mean?? I’d like to know, yes! But I get that sometimes it’s incredibly anxiety ridden trying to tell someone that you’ve lost interest in a thread. It’s alright if you don’t tell me, but if you can muster up the courage to do so I’d appreciate it! I’m not gonna be upset at you for losing interest/muse in a thread! If I cared deeply about the story, I might poke at you and then you can tell me?? Either way it’s fine and tbh, I don’t mind. However, please let it be known that you can take forever on a reply as well so don’t worry about just hoarding a draft too! Tbh, I had someone reply to a thread literally a year later and I was still excited for it! - What should your partner do when dropping a thread?: Just shoot me an IM or hell, make a list of threads you’re dropping and tag me in it??? Which ever! Or don’t even tell me at all, whatever works for you sugar!
What could possibly lead you to drop a thread?: Hmn, being overwhelmed-- I tend to accumulate a lot of drafts and 90% of them are long so sometimes I’ll drop a thread or two to help myself get by. Also lack of muse/interest is a factor. I won’t drop a thread purely out of being overwhelmed unless I just can’t muster up the muse to respond to it. - Will you tell your partner?: YES / NO / DEPENDS. Sometimes I get overwhelmed myself and I’ll drop a thread, forget to tell my partner, etc. Other times I’ll tell them before I even delete the draft!
Is communication in the rpc important to you? YES / NO. - And why?: Yes and no~ Yes primarily! I get that others can take a minute to muster up the courage to talk to others and would just prefer to keep things to a few sentences at first! However, I can and will ambush you with conversation and interest nonetheless. Because communication is important. If you’ve got something you wanna say to me, say it! I’m here for it! - Are you okay with absolute honesty, even if it may means hearing something negative about you and/or portrayal?: Yup! If you’ve got an issue or something that might come across as criticism to say, say it! Civil discussion is absolutely wanted here and I would like to work out any issues you may have with me or my portrayal. - Do you think you can handle such situation in a mature way? YES / NO.
Why do you rp again, is there a goal?: To write and have fun! To explore in depth the characters I create or take on! I mean, c’mon, lbr here-- my gremlin ass muses require some more in depth speculation and investigation into their characters! I love the creativity, the world building, the constant drive to do better and to make others feel something from words alone. The capability to rend emotion from another living being simply from reading and reacting to something I created is amazing and I want to make others cry, laugh, smile and think. I want to create.
Wishlist, be it plots or scenarios: Oh man, there’s an endless supply of things I’d like to do! I want to explore the depths of my muses’ histories more?? Like Shiro, I want to write out the things he must’ve seen, felt, experienced. How Nelliel was when she was alive, how Shiro fared in the Arena when he wasn’t fighting, Seb’s life torn between the various throws of data and reality-- there’s so much! And ALL THE AU’s!!!! All of them!!!
Themes I won’t ever rp / explore: Sure, I work with a lot of darker themes like torture, gore, etc-- but I will not write Rape, sexual abuse, nor will I write child loss.
What Type of Starters do you prefer / dislike, can’t work with?: I can work with most starters! However, if I’m randomly given a starter that I can’t work with for the muse selected, I’ll inform the person who wrote it! I appreciate the effort given but don’t expect me to be able to reply to every random starter given! Sometimes, they don’t even show up in my tag.
What type of characters catch your interest the most?: Okay, I’m a sucker for the underdogs, aggressive folks and the villains. I’m not even going to try and lie and say I don’t immediately look at the Aizens and Kenpachis and go ah yes, those fucking gremlins, give me ten. I also love the background characters? The side characters in a show that seem so unimportant but have a crucial role? I love characters that have such an obscure involvement that you have to stop and ask why and how their involvement was crucial. I also love the soft beans? The ones who are so hyped with positivity and gleaming interest that they just can’t be ignored?? But then turn around and whoop some poor sap’s ass with that sparkle sparkle smile. Also love the upstanding moral types that also acknowledge that some things can’t be avoided and that morality is a grey area dependent on the perceptions of the individuals themselves.
What type of characters catch your interest the least?: Hmn-- I guess the kind that don’t seem to have much substance to them? The ones that are just uncharacteristically too kind. Yes, I love the overwhelmingly positive types but?? Also?? The ones that are too kind and without flaw just?? Don’t strike me as interesting. Also the ones that are just cruel for some obscure reason just to give them a reason to be villains. I mean I understand but also?? Villains don’t have to have a reason?? They can be cruel just to be cruel. Idk that’s always just been a thing with me.
What are your strong aspects as rp partner?: I guess that I’m fairly laid back? I don’t mind if you take 10 years to reply, I’m going to get excited if you message me with some random idea, I’m not going to be bothered by any ideas you suggest?? I can also sometimes give u doodles?? I don’t have time to doodle a lot but sometimes, once in a blue moon, you’ll get a random offering of doodled booty for ur blessing. Also gonna hit you up with random HCs, ideas, threads, etc?? Always?? Idk, I’m not too good at thinking about positive aspects of myself lmfao.
What are your weak aspects as rp partner?: Hnnn, I’m too laid back at times. I take too long to reply and I’m busy af IRL. I’m often goaded into being irritated by some asshole or another so I can come off aggro af too when I don’t mean to be. Sometimes I can get overwhelmed and disappear for a week, other times I can end up overwhelming someone else by being too excited? I tend to watch how much I do and say because I feel like I might come off as smothering and am too used to being shut down and told to shut up so I just don’t?? Do anything sometimes. I’m also not very good at initiating contact sometimes so I tend to go days and weeks without speaking to others.
Do you rp smut?: YES / NO. Do you prefer to go into detail?: YES / NO / DEPENDS. Are you okay with black curtain?: YES / NO. - When do you rp smut? More out of fun or character development?: Usually only if it’s developmental for the characters involved. Sometimes it’s just fun to do! It really depends on the characters involved + if I have any muse in general for it. - Anything you would not want to rp there?: ???? Kinda vague, Idk? I mean if I don’t wanna rp somethin’ I’ll say so.
Are ships important to you?: YES / NO. Would you say your blog is ship-focused?: YES / NO. Do you use read more?: YES / NO / SOMETIMES. Are you: Multi-Ship / Single-Ship / Dual-Ship — Multiverse / Singleverse. - What do you love to explore the most in your ships?: The relationship, the depth of two muses who can be wildly different or even similar. The multifaceted involvement of others to that relationship, the angst, the arguments, the sad moments along with all the happy things and how hard one might try while the other is cold-- etc. I don’t just want happy dates and sunshine, that’s not how relationships work after all! - What is your smut tag?: Kettledrums
Are you okay with pre-established relationships?: YES / NO. - And what kind of ones?: I like a lot of pre-established relationships! However, I can be a tad wary of child muses? Aka: The ones who are children of one of my muses. Reason being, sometimes even I don’t know how they’d raise a child so the muse in question would be off putting to me because it’s out of my realm. Beyond that, I’m down for just about everything!
► SECTION ABOUT YOUR MUSE.
- What could possibly make your Muse interesting towards others, why should they rp with this particular character of yours now, what possible plots do they offer?: Since I have so many damn muses, I’mma just go with Shiro for all of this-- I suppose what they could find interesting is his very multifaceted dynamic as a soldier, human, technical non-human (Zombae), war worn, space exploring person. He can be rainbows and sunshine but also can suddenly become incredibly aggressive and cold. He’s not one or the other, he’s all and everything that he’s learned and encompassed while still remaining fragile and human in the end. Writing with him can be inspiring and can be soul wrenching, depending on the thread. As for plots, dude your character could be in space in one thread if the otherwise couldn’t be. There’s so many ways to go about writing with him?? He’s such an amazing character and the plots he can be instilled in are almost limitless with just his main verse.
- With what type of Muses do you usually struggle to rp with?: Hmn-- I guess the main one I have issues injecting him into place with would be the ones who are strictly non-tech oriented?? I mean, I can still have him there but getting him to fit is just?? Really difficult. Also with people who RP villains of his fandom and expect him not to be volatile. I’m sorry, but if you’re writing a S.endak or a Z.arkon-- you’re not going to get roses and butterflies with Shiro, plain and simple. If that’s something you can’t accept then don’t approach him with those muses. - With what type of Muses do they usually work well with?: He works really well with most anyone! So long as one goes into it knowing he can be hostile with soldiers, Galra, etc; then he can be used no matter what. He’s one of my most capable muses that doesn’t have much of an issue when it comes to responding.
- What interests your Muse(s) in general: Space, mechanics, biomedical engineering, people, freedom, fighting for a cause, flowers, his mother, violin, cats, sparring, getting stronger, constellations, nebulae, engineering, literature, alien languages, cooking. - What do they desire, is their goal?: The safety of others, the freedom of others, the ability to choose, hope-- he wants to make sure those he cares for and all others are free and safe from the Galra take over. - What catches their interest first when meeting someone new?: How they look at him. If they show signs of pity, of fear, he tends to walk away from any possible meeting with them. Otherwise, their appearance is what first catches his eye. How they dress, how they respond to him, how they talk and if he can make them crack a smile with an awkward joke. - What do they value in a person?: Hope, Strength, Loyalty, Purpose, Honesty, Patience. - What themes do they like talking about?: Shiro’s more of a listener than a talker, but honestly he’ll talk about anything of interest and question anyone’s as well to get them to talk about it. It’s what makes conversation with him easygoing most of the time. - Which themes bore them?: Himself. He’ll try to avert any conversation about himself if it’s too personal or too close to something. It’s not so much that it bores him but that type of talk is reserved for those insanely close to him. Also talk of command bores the FUCK out of him. He’s never been one to really like rank.
- Did they ever went through something traumatic?: So. Fucking. Much. Between being a prisoner of a war he was never involved with to being told he was a leader of a rebellion for said war, being a prisoner in the Arena and forced to fight and kill others, being held down and sedated as he tried to warn the others, DYING-- this boy has been thru too much. - What could possibly trigger them?: Certain noises, textures, Galra, medical equipment, certain lighting. - What could set them off, enrage them?: Galra, someone protecting him. - What could lead to an instant kill?: Any bloodlust towards him or those he cares for. Most of the time, he has this under control and tries to be merciful, give them a chance; but sometimes, especially during an episode; there’s no stopping him from gunning for someone’s throat if they had any intent to harm another or himself.
- Is there someone /-thing they hate?: Z.arkon, S.endak, L.otor, H.aggar, Druids, himself a lot of the time. - Is there someone /-thing they love?: The paladins, space fam in general, his mother, his friends, people in general.
Is your Muse easy to approach?: YES / NO. - Best ways to approach them?: Just approach him? Honestly, Shiro’s one of the easiest persons to converse with and get near. That doesn’t mean his guard is dropped, but he’s very easy going a lot of the time outside of battle. So long as you have a reason to approach him (even simpler ones like: his appearance, his arm, etc) then you’re set. - Where are they usually to find?: Oof, honestly? Anywhere. Space, Earth, other places-- he’s constantly on the move. If you want a set place, just say somewhere on Earth and I can work with that.
Something you may still want to point out about your muse?: Shiro is certainly easy to get along with, but he is not without flaw or issue. He has a plethora of issues even after the fall of the Galra Empire. He’s not without his scars, physical and otherwise. Approaching him is easy but getting close to him is not. Don’t expect him to be an open book. Just because he can talk about war, battle, fighting with a straight face doesn’t mean he wasn’t effected by it. He has suffered greatly and it will show the closer you get to him.
CONGRATS!!! You managed it, now tag your mutuals! ♥

It’s inconsistent, she changes is constantly but most often its what you see in the icon.
Black/Brown hair with streaks of whatever color she fancies at the time, choppy razored bangs.

Star!, the 1968 musical biopic of Gertrude Lawrence celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, signalled a substantial shift for the on-screen persona of Julie Andrews. Although the actress had tackled slightly ‘darker’ roles in some of her previous dramatic films –– notably, The Americanization of Emily (1964), Hawaii (1966) and Torn Curtain (1966) –– her star image in this era was primarily defined by the trio of hit screen musicals –– Mary Poppins (1964), The Sound of Music (1965) and Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967). Together these family-friendly blockbusters cemented a popular ‘nice girl’ image humorously described by one commentator of the time as “Miss Sunshine of the Sixties” (Coleman, 118).
The part of Gertrude Lawrence, by contrast, was no sunny musical ingenue. As depicted in Star!, she is an ambitious arriviste driven to theatrical and social success at all costs. A self-absorbed hedonist, Gertie drinks, swears, and leaves a trail of broken romances and –– perhaps, most subversive vis-à-vis the traditional Julie Andrews screen image –– abandoned children in her wake. Much of the film’s commercial underperformance has been attributed to the difficulty audiences of the time had in accepting Julie Andrews in such a radically atypical role (Kennedy, 154; Silverman, 131). Even the Dame herself subscribes to this theory, musing in retrospect that:
“It was a time of enormous change for me and for movies…And people then were not ready to accept me in an unsympathetic role like Gertrude Lawrence in Star!” (Anderson, 27).
Things weren’t possibly helped much by the film’s pre-release publicity campaign. The second of two films that Julie was contracted to make for Twentieth Century-Fox, Star! was initially announced in late 1964, before her first film, The Sound of Music was even in the can (Scheuer, V-15). By the time Star! was ready for production, The Sound of Music had become the highest grossing film of all time and Fox spared no expense in promoting their new big Julie Andrews musical. The studio assigned not one but two Publicity Directors to handle the film, Howard Newman and Mike Kaplan. Together they helmed what was described as “the biggest publicity barrage in Hollywood history” with countless media releases, photographs, interviews, and PR stories (Edwards).
From the outset, Fox was quick to promote Star! as a reunion of the “dream team” behind The Sound of Music: star Julie Andrews, director Robert Wise and producer Saul Chaplin (”Movie Call Sheet,” IV-10). “Julie Andrews…returns to singing and dancing in Star! with the same two movie makers who guided The Sound of Music,” trumpeted a widely syndicated press release to mark the start of shooting in early 1967. “If any picture is likely to match The Sound of Music in public popularity, it will be Star!” (Kaplan, B-10). As a purely attention-grabbing marketing strategy, it made sense to play up The Sound of Music connections, but it arguably served to foster false expectations that Star! was set to be another upbeat family musical.
During the film’s long 18 month production, media articles started to hint that Star! marked a change of pace for Julie. However, the focus was largely on change at the level of visual style with Star! framed as little more than a cosmetic makeover for “our Julie”:
“To play Gertrude Lawrence should give Julie Andrews a much deserved chance to prove what a charmer she is. On the screen Julie has been hidden under nun’s robes and missionary muumuus for the past two years…In Gertrude Lawrence’s chiffon and ostrich she should come alive as a glamorous woman instead of a wholesome girl” (Sheppard, D1).
Or again:
“In ‘Star!’ [Julie is] playing her first glamorous role, a musical comedy star based on the life of Gertrude Lawrence. Donald Brooks designed a $250,000 wardrobe for her, not including the $2,500,000 worth of real jewels supplied by Cartier’s in New York…It’s a chic and elegant Julie you’ll be seeing in ‘Star!’, singing more than two dozen songs by Noel Coward, Kurt Weil, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and other great composers” (Sherman, B-3).
The net effect of these widespread media reports was to present Star! as a variation on the classic Cinderella ‘makeover’ musical which had been central to Julie’s stardom from My Fair Lady to Thoroughly Modern Millie (Cantu 2015). Small point that Julie’s new character was possibly more Wicked Stepmother than Cinderella.
One of the most spectacular examples of the promotional framing of Star! as fairytale makeover is this lavish cover spread from the popular US weekly magazine, Look. Hitting the stands in mid-September 1967 –– nine months before Star!’s UK premiere and a full year before its US release –– the magazine spread is essentially a photographic panegyric to Julie as ‘glammed up’ princess with costume designer Donald Brooks cast in the the role of symbolic Fairy Godmother:
“At this point, Star! is only half-born…However, publicity on the Robert Wise production for 20th Century-Fox starts now, and its uproar will echo immediately through the world of fashion. Julie will wear 124 different costumes in Star! They are all glamorous, a word invented for the likes of Gertie Lawrence and captured now by designer Donald Brooks. For women who do not want to follow the hippie road or slick moon-blast to fashion, here is salvation” (Zill, 63).
In glossy full page shots by famed photographer, Cal Bernstein, Julie is showcased in some of Brook’s most lavish costumes, set against a series of fantasy backdrops courtesy of the Fox prop department: Julie as darling flapper, as ‘swellegant’ society lady, as landed gentry. It’s a stunning preview of "Julie’s Dazzling New Look” but it offers nary a hint about “Julie’s Acidic New Personality”!
On its release, reviews of Star! were sharply mixed. The film garnered more praise than is often remembered, but among the many brickbats, critics were quick to highlight the jarring disjunction between Julie’s received star image and her waspish new role. In a typical example, Renata Adler* of The New York Times wrote:
“Miss Andrews, who plays Gertrude Lawrence, is not at her best in this one. There is some sort of clash between her special niceness and innocence and the attitude that the film, directed by Robert Wise (of ‘The Sound of Music’), has toward the star of ‘Private Lives’ and ‘The King and I’" (Adler, 21).
Could this type of response have been averted with a more careful pre-release framing of the film and its casting of Julie ‘against type’? Possibly, but then Star!’s problems were never limited to the film’s surprise revision of Julie’s ‘girl next door’ persona. Failure may be a proverbial orphan but in the case of Star! it most definitely had ‘multiple fathers.’ Some of the other factors operative in the film’s underperformance will likely be flagged in future posts but the Look magazine cover from 1967 provides a telling insight into one of them. The cover’s uneasy juxtaposition of Julie’s fantasy glamour makeover alongside headline allusions to the war in Vietnam and rising murder rates serves a symbolic snapshot of the rapidly brewing social tumult that would rise to engulf America and bedevil the reception of Star! and other big screen musicals of the era.
Variously dubbed ‘the year that rocked the world’, 'the year of awakening’, ‘the year of revolt’, 1968 was nothing if not a watershed moment of profound social upheaval. As post-war baby boomers came of age and countercultural youth movements reached critical mass, “there occurred a spontaneous combustion of rebellious spirits around the world” united by “a sense of alienation from the established order and a profound distaste for authoritarianism in any form” (Kurlansky, xvii). In such a context, the complexion and tastes of movie audiences were, like the times, a-changin’ fast. Small youth-oriented and iconoclastic social realist films like The Graduate (1967) Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and Easy Rider (1969) were the new order of the day and, almost overnight, big budget musicals like Star! were deemed woefully old-fashioned, even irrelevant.
In a remarkably hostile piece that is possibly more cultural symptomatology than actual film review, Robert Kotlowitz, resident critic for Harper’s magazine, took Star! to task for what he saw as the film’s reactionary obliviousness to America’s changing zeitgeist. The filmmakers, he writes, seem to:
“have simply strolled over to Hollywood’s immense fantasy bin –– in which slivers of our national psyche lie buried –– and casually plucked dozens of the gaudiest clichés from the dust and packaged them as a Technicolor extravaganza…[Star!] is less concerned with the biography of Gertrude Lawrence than with using the rags-to-riches, triumphs-and-heartaches outline of her story to define an extinct type of glamor, the ideal of an anti-serious and pre-pop generation…it’s impossible to imagine the John Lennon legend ever receiving this kind of treatment “ (169).
Not sure about John Lennon –– though fifty years after the fact, one would be hard pressed to claim his legend hasn’t been subject to its own forms of clichéd idealisation –– but Kotlowitz’s diatribe certainly gives a sense of the extent to which Star! suffered substantial fallout from the era’s rapidly transforming social climate.
And, pace Kotlowitz’s testy dismissal of the film as “extinct glamor”, Star! possibly offers its own eloquent rejoinder when, in a spirited defence of Gertie’s mercurial eccentricities, Noël Coward grandly declaims:
“I know she’s maddening, infuriating and impossible…but she’s also probably the most beautiful and entrancing creature ever to walk onto a stage. Glamour is a very overworked and quite indefinable word but I think the world could do with a little of her brand of it at the moment” (Fairchild, 142).
Five decades on, some of us are still entranced by the glamour of Star!…warts and all! ___________________________
Notes:
* It was widely reported that Renata Adler left the press screening of Star! early due to illness. The fact that she went ahead to file a negative, and dismissively short, review despite only having seen half the film prompted an outraged letter to the editor from Twentieth Century-Fox head, Daryl F. Zanuck. It was one of several gaffes that marked Adler’s brief but tempestuous tenure as resident film critic at The New York Times (Roberts, 181ff).

Rainy
Summary: A rainy day in with PB and Marcy. Science gets interrupted and gross adorable gay fluff ensues
Characters: Marcelline x Princess Bubblegum
Author’s Note: I love these two forever. For @aradiamegiddy and her girlfriend, because those two are cute as hell. Hope you enjoy it!
Word Count: 589
Part of the fanfic free-for-all
Princess Bubblegum wasn’t much of a singer. In fact, she mused as she idly stirred the solution in front of her, she always thought she was a little bit tone-deaf. But she liked to sing, and Marcy told her she wasn’t bad at it. Who am I to disagree? She’s the professional, PB thought with a smile. So they would usually sing together, cute little duets that Marcy would come up with on the spot. Usually it was about love, but sometimes PB would make up songs about physics or biochemistry in order to remember important facts. Marcy said it was the sign of a “cute brain.”
But when PB was alone, she hardly had time to devote to improv. So she sang lyrics that Marcy already had written: lyrics she often sang to her when they were alone on rainy days. The castle was always warmer when it was filled with Marcy’s music. Sometimes PB imagined all of Oo could hear her beautiful voice.
“What kind of dad eats his daughter’s fries—”
“That’s my least favorite song, y’know.”
She screamed and nearly dropped the beaker in her hand. “Oh my glob! Wh—” She turned her head and found Marcy floating over by the door upside-down, her head tilted backward so she could survey the room. She was smiling.
“Did I scare you?”
“No,” PB lied, her brow furrowed. Marcy actually laughed and approached her, dropping down gracefully onto the polished linoleum of the laboratory floor. She draped her arms around her princess, her cold hands eventually resting on her stomach.
“Aw, I’m sorry for scaring you, Bonnie,” she lied back, letting out a little lilting chuckle. PB felt hot breath by her neck and she pulled away.
“Not now Marcy, I’m really busy.” She pushed her glasses up onto the bridge of her nose. Marcy frowned.
“C’mon, can’t you drop all that for one minute and come hang out with me? We could go to Squeezy Mart, or we can sing or—”
“It’s all gross outside, though. I don’t wanna go out there. How about this?” PB put the beaker down and turned off the Bunsen burner. “I’ll finish up here, and then we can go sit up in my room or something. Take a nap maybe.”
Marcy yawned. “Yeah, that sounds kinda nice actually. I’ll leave you to it, Peebs.” She drifted up off the floor and headed upstairs. PB smiled, a little pink blush swirling on her cheeks, and she cleaned up the last of her materials. She climbed up the endless high staircase to her bedroom, where, sure enough, Marcelline was curled up on her bed. Her eyes were already closed, and her breathing was steady. PB smiled.
“Hey, you.”
Marcy smiled back, her eyes still shut. “Mmmmhey. You comin’ to bed or are you just gonna stand there?”
PB rolled her eyes and changed into a tee shirt and shorts. “Shut up.” She climbed gracefully into bed and pulled the covers up over the two of them. Marcy opened her eyes and poked her on the cheek.
“Hey!”
“Sorry, Peebs, couldn’t help it. You have a pretty cool face.”
PB laughed and pulled Marcy close to her. The rain fell in steady sheets outside, and the two laid there for a moment to listen.
“It’s pretty to listen to, isn’t it?” Marcy asked after a few minutes.
“Not as pretty as your voice,” PB replied sleepily.
“You’re so gross.” Marcy kissed the princess on the forehead and snuggled closer. They fell asleep to the rain.
