"Miku-san!" You can bet anything she knew this was coming. The cake is small, but it's made with love and even has a (spare) Miku figure as a cake topper. The whole thing is under a clear lid and is wrapped with a big bow and taped to the side of it is a CD with a collection of songs that Kanami thinks the other will like. "Happy birthday!"

          For a moment, Miku is just silent. She hadn’t expected her birthday to be anything more than spoken congratulations and press events, at least until she got back home. It had been like that for a while now, from her first anniversary, to the five year mark, and then now, and she was used to that. Life was just like that.

          But, to receive a present not only in general, but from another idol, from Kanami--that struck a cord. There was so much constant worry her peers didn’t like her, so much smiling and taking the worst of it in stride that even a small act like this meant so much. It was hard not to smile and sniffle as she took the cake from Kanami’s hands, and truth be told, Miku didn’t try very hard to hide it at all.

               “T-Thank you so much, Kanami-chan! This... really means a lot.”

' Hatsune-San, happy birthday. '

               “Thank you very much, Kitagawa-san!” She gives a polite bow of thanks,           but it’s more a formality than anything else at this point, if how carefree her           smile looks is any indication. 

               “The painting you sent to our office came perfectly safe and sound, by the           way. You really didn’t have to try and make a gift, but it was so incredible! I’ve           never been sure how much I like abstract art, but I really did see myself in that           painting, like your note about it said. I’ll treasure it always.”

She might be a squidkid at the moment but nothing is stopping her from busting in to see her favorite idol right now. "H-HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIKU-CHAN!" She doesn't have a present, so hopefully a big hug will be an acceptable present instead.

               Squid or kid, a hug from one of her favorite producers was always more           than welcome! And it wasn’t like she wasn’t going to immediately become a           furry herself come November anyway, so really, they were even! “Thank you           very much! I owe everything to people like you who work with me, so this is           your day to party, too!”

               Whether or not he’s a fan has yet to really hit her--she couldn’t exactly imagine an esteemed detective like Goro Akechi has much, if any, genuine interest in any idol, let alone her--but he was polite and charming all the same while they waited for their own interviews at the television station before, and Miku was not so unsure of herself to ignore his good wishes. Good first impressions counted, but you couldn’t leave new connections at that!

          “Kurusu-san--no, wait. Kurusu-kun.” She has to catch herself on that now; her professionally polite tendencies were hard to break out of, when meeting something outside the know. But change had to start somewhere, and where better than here?

          “Overall... I think Kurusu-kun is a good person.” Best address that right away, before any talk began. “He hasn’t told me everything about himself, and I don’t really expect him to, we haven’t been acquainted all that long. But from what I do know, it just looks like he’s gotten a bad reputation here for no general reason. I don’t think how accommodating he’s been to me has anything to do me being me, either--” Did she mean herself as an idol, or herself as a girl? Who knew? She did! It was neither. “--so I don’t think it’s a matter of ulterior motives... at least, in that sense.”

          He was up to something, that much was clear to her, but then again, so was she, and Miku was certain he had an inkling to that, too. Neither of them were prowling around Shibuya the way they were by chance; it would have been far too perfect otherwise, with the timeliness of the situation, and their suspicions of one another were justified, she felt. But in the end, their goals seemed to be the same, for the moment, anyway. And Miku wouldn’t say he’d done anything, but if he had... well, no one was dead. And she did say it to Kurusu-kun herself: she had high hopes for the phantom’s chivalry, if nothing else.

          “But, you know, more than anything... I just want to believe in him.” Whether or not she ultimately would was just a matter of time--but the odds were in his favor, she’d say. “I think he’s got the right idea about some things.”

               “Hmmm... those aren’t soundtracks I’m all that familiar with...           maybe The Muse’s Tears? It’s got a real melancholy feel to it, those           are hard to find in more techno-based BGMs.”

          “Oh, that’s an easy one!” With so many songs under her belt, coming out in only a fraction of the time it’d take a normal artist, it seems almost a little strange she’d have an answer so readily. But it’s one she’s known for a long time now, and given the context and who’s speaking, it’s kind of a no brainer.

          “It’s ’Tell Your World’, without a doubt. The song is all about wanting to connect with others regardless of distance, and coming together as one community; that sort of stuff always makes me emotional. Hehe, you know, I actually cried a little bit when the commercial it was for aired.” She tugs at one pigtail, sheepishly, but the gratitude in her voice is clear and genuine. “I guess it’s a little cliche of me to say something like that, but… ahh, it’s just so amazing what you can do when you’re not on your own, you know? Cliche or not. People can say power in numbers doesn’t mean much, or seems cheap, but when people come together for a common cause, that’s when change happens. Change, and… and real miracles. That’s what I think, anyway.”
