AERITH HC: shaving!

my aerith is a trans girl! and she HATES shaving. shaving has become part of her morning ritual but she thinks its an AWFUL expectation for women.

super wired: doing that and still living true to the cyberpunk dystopia fantasy and showing that capitalism and other isms including but not limited to ableism are what effects marginalized people and makes them hate themselves. the fact that capitalism will never make space for disabled and neurodivergent people bc it thrives on doing the bare minimum and making the most profit and a system like that is never going to make things accessible or equal for all people UNLESS WE FIGHT FOR IT... (and also capitalism literally sells the able-bodied neurotypical fantasy for the top dollar, and controls disabled people thru the technology and accesibility devices it DOES offer.)

AERITH & TIFA : ok i’m a bad lesbian bc i dont really know how i feel about aerti but also? i just want my aerith to be like. obsessed with ur tifa in particular. tifa voice: are we flirting or are we friend flirting? aerith voice: yes. they are clearly so important to each other and they have a similar way of projecting femininity to the world, of being both cute & adorable & pretty in all the ways that count, but also... BARRET & TIFA : i want them to be like. the best of friends. i want any time tifa to have yelled at barret to be from the place of a woman who is just as much of family to him as marlene, i want them to understand each other and love each other and not know who really counts as the big sibling and who counts as the little sibling bc they take care of each other so well in different ways, but also, tifa is DEFINITELY marlene’s auntie and that’s all that really matters. i want them to be PARTNERS in business and revolution and everything AVALANCHE does, i want barret to feel likes she’s just as much of a founder as he is and tifa to feel like he’s just as much a part of the soul of her business. I WANT EVERYTHING FROM THEM LOL.

GLADIO & TIFA : this is sort of a crack ship on my part, but i see potential for them bc in my au, gladio is a wutai general in the ongoing war. while in ff7 the war is pretty much over, i hc the war in ff7r is still going on. i think tifa and gladio could be an interesting expression of mainland vs emmigrant anxieties about the war in a fascinating and important way, and i think gladio would both have great respect for tifa as a warrior, and great sympathy for her as someone of wutai heritage. i also think he could try to convince tifa to join the wutai army as like. a fun sideplot? lmfao it could be cool, and it would be like. classically romantic in a way lmfao

TIFA & FANG : my fang is a part of the main branch of avalanche that didn’t defect---but she kind of agrees with barret even tho they butt heads. i see them as having an antagonistic relationship as tifa’s allegiances is always aligned with barret----but they start to warm up to eachother as bad ass lady warriors and immigrants over time when fang joins them on their journey! RIVALS TO FRIENDS AU.

BARRET HC: community organizer.

barret grew up in corel---and the community was tightknit and close. as barret got older, his confident personality and his close relationship with everyone in town made him sort of a secondary leader in the village, after his best friend, dyne... which eventually led to everyone to agree with him about letting shinra into their village which HOO boy. we know how that ended.

when he left & got to the sector 7 slums with marlene, he noticed the people lacked any sort of real community. at first he wanted to keep to himself, feeling guilt for his past mistakes as a community leader in corel. but he wanted marlene and himself to have a better support system in order to get her the care & education that she needed, which was especially relevant as he would have to take on a full-time job to support her & he would have less time to spend with her as a full-time working single dad.

barret got a job at tifa’s bar tending drinks. tifa let marlene sit with barret behind the counter while he worked, and even babysat for him sometimes, especially when tifa and barret started to get the idea to start making and selling much-needed water filters using barret’s mechanical knowledge and tifa’s connections to the locals, and barret got even more busy.

it was seeing people almost get attacked by the monsters in the city that made barret organize the community watch with biggs & wedge. he started helping out at marlene’s school----organizing community cook outs during the summer for the local kids and their families and people who couldn’t afford good food on their own and the like, and eventually, his efforts were recognized when he was approached by the main branch of AVALANCHE, who in remake canon i hc had tried to help corel deal with shinra in the past similar to original flavor canon. barret was, at first, reluctant, but after seeing how terrible things really were in the slums for the people there (and having so much personal experience with how terrible shinra was in addition to the terrible way they were treating the planet....) he felt he had no choice but to accept.

 AVALANCHE has helped barret help his community even more. they have  connections to sympathetic rich people who now use their resources to help the slums and the people who live there. barret has only recently broken off from them bc of disagreements over the slow incrememental process the main branch of AVALANCHE seems to want instead of the more immediate acts that barret wants to enact to help things get better NOW. the planet is crying out! the people are crying out! and based on AVALANCHE’s research, it may already be too late for the planet, damages now irreversible (to parallel our real world situation lol)

ff7r is a really good like. exploration of how capitalism effects the working class and working people. u see people complaining about their life no matter where they are or what’s going on. NO ONE’S HAPPY. everyone is obsessed with the minutae of the setting and their life---what’s on tv, the latest entertainment, what to eat, how much their job sucks and how they’re just fucking tired.

i know marx is incorrectely quoted as saying ‘religion is the opiate of the masses’ but i think nowadays the more prevalent problem is that like this unsaid aspect of modern society that so many people, older people and marginalized people especially, are just too BUSY trying to support themselves and their families (and TIRED because of it, labor is TIRING) to do anything that requires any more mental labor than bitching about it with each other, eating, fucking around, and watching the news maybe.

ff7r is really good about telling u, u will work ur fingers to the bone for an unethical corporation bc its the only employer---and they will suck u dry, they will do whatever they want with u, and u can’t really do a thing about it unless the whole corporation is taken down. if u work for them, u can’t stop them from hurting people or the planet, and u might have to actively hurt them urself. if you don’t work for them, you can’t feed ur family, u can’t have a shinra-built roof over ur head. shinra owns everything. shinra provides everything. and we see in the game, because of shinra owning and providing everything (including the military), people sometimes think they have to be THANKFUL to shinra---even in the slums, even when people are dying.

nobody knows better, and if u think u know better----you don’t have a long-term solution that appeals to everyone on paper and in practice that is better than shinra and actually applicable to the current society that doesn’t upend everyone’s life and their complacency that the system built.

i don’t consider AVALANCHE terrorists and i never will. it’s terrible people die from the bombs---but they only die from the bombs because SHINRA lets people die. like thats a plot point but its also a very hamfisted metaphor for reality and how the corporations that own every aspects of our lives could help us at any time but they don’t. capitalism consumes people, and it makes them into consumers that can never be happy with the scraps that they’re fed, and it thrives off the scarcity of those scraps and our debts and discontents. they can be tired, and complacent in evil. but that’s it. 

AVALANCHE are literal freedom fighters and it really says something about capitalism in 2020 that people look at a fuckin. JRPG. where u beat up bad guys and teenage mutant ninja turtles in the sewers, classic jrpg HERO actions.... and go ‘wow... these heroes are not heroic because they actually do something about capitalism instead of sitting around on their asses’ like. stop it. cut it out. get help lol

barret hc:

barret is the KING of positive reinforcement. he doesn’t believe in ‘punishing’ kids thru any other means other than being honest and telling them when ur disappointed bc they did something that hurt themself or other people. marlene knows that it’s okay to make mistakes, but it’s never okay to be selfish. she understands her own boundaries, and knows how to be polite---but barret makes sure she knows standing up for herself & standing her ground is more important than making other people comfortable or doing what they say. 

marlene knows that she’s special&intelligent---and while barret often uses ‘pretty’ to tease his boys, he never uses ‘pretty’ or ‘beautiful’ to describe her as positive reinforcement bc he doesn’t want his little girl to see beauty as the only sign of her worth as a woman (though when she asks when they’re playing dress up, of course he calls her his ‘adorable little baby girl in her cute little dress’). he says she’s good. he says she’s important, and brave, and that she can do anything she puts her mind to. he turns chores into a game, makes sure she knows basic life skills like cooking & cleaning & taking care of herself and that she honestly likes doing them bc she views them as a bonding activity and something to make herself and the people around her feel good.

she knows that it’s ok to be afraid & that her fears don’t define her. but she can always stand up to the bad guys---just like her daddy.

barret does the world’s best braids and pigtails, and if he has any faults---it’s that he spoils her with gifts bc he can’t always be around being an activist, full-time employee of seventh heaven, and community leader like he is. he often feels down on himself for not doing enough---wishes he could be there for her more, wishes she had two parents instead of just one, wishes her bio parents were still alive to take care of her and be with her more than anything, bc marlene’s mother and father were special, and they were special to barret too. but barret’s doing the best that he possibly can, given the circumstances. and tbh, he couldn’t do much better!!!!

-great cook, better baker, though he likes to think of himself as a ‘grill man’. he will grill in his sandals and shorts during the summers for the neighborhood kids and their families (as well as the houseless). burgers and hot dogs of course, but his speciality is ribs. food and water’s free (first come, first serve)---but if u want a beer, go to seventh heaven and pay full price. ‘ADULTS ONLY, you hear me kids? don’t you go and try to sneak in there! go buy a soda at the vending or something! jeez...’ the baking he has only recently started to really excel at. marlene loves baking, but she wants to bake everything from scratch. kids don’t actually cook anything themselves, and marlene gets disappointed if it’s not PERFECT, thus, barret serves quality baked goods

-great singer, when he’s not being a goofball. low gravelly voice u wanna swim in. perfect for his fave oldies, though he actually prefers punk music.

-has mastered the art of reading a book with one hand. it helps that his hand is huge. loves to lounge and read in his spare time. usually science fiction novels, lots of unofficial biographies, sometimes romance novels, though he’d never let anyone catch him reading THOSE

-big nerd. loves action anime and cartoons and video games. when he was a kid he got picked on for it a lot. there was a time when he was afraid he would never be able to play video games again---but luckily, advanced vr exists, and now he doesn’t have to worry about it.

-barret owns a flip phone and texts very, very slowly, with the phone basically pressed up against his face while he squints at it. refuses to get a better phone. the phone in seventh heaven has a fuckin’ spiral cord bc he refuses to upgrade it. ‘works fine,’ he says. ‘don’t need anything else.’ tifa suffers.

AERITH HC: chatterbox !

aerith talks. a lot. she is constantly making jokes and teasing people. she can’t seem to turn it off most of the time. 

she’s warm and overly friendly even to people she doesn’t know---but even despite this, avalanche are her first ‘real’ friends besides her moms & her flowers (and zack, where ever tf he is lol). her chatterbox charm point comes in from her being pretty lonely her whole life. a happy, friendly girl---but one with anxiety about people (and rightfully so due to her trauma), who had to grow and learn how to be around people at all by being extremely brave. 

even after she started selling flowers, people didn’t seem to pay her much mind---and that was the only reason she could go out and about as she wished (due to shinra being fucks). aerith learned to entertain herself, to talk to herself, and even in moments when she isn’t actively teasing the avalanche gang, she’s usually entertaining herself with her own jokes and one-liners and silliness. she doesn’t know how to turn it off, bc she’s so used to thinking and talking out loud. being out and about with real people, real friends (and heroes to boot!), makes her so happy she can’t really stop performing for them and for herself.

she’s so used to being bored and alone---right now, life is so EXCITING and it feels REAL for the first time. like she’s actually DOING STUFF, stuff she’d never think to do on her own, stuff she knows she’s probably not brave enough to do on her own, even if she does have a spitfire heart full of certified moxie.

in a lot of ways, she view the avalanche gang as her HEROES. idols to look up to, especially cloud and tifa and barret, who are so brave and strong and COOL, even when they are being dorks. (she doesn’t mind. she considers herself a card-carrying dork too.) it’s so easy to love them, and fall in line with them. it feels like fate, but it also feels like she’s being saved, like she can finally live her life, free to choose instead of hide. they’re so special to her!!!!!
