Ah, puberty... Also known as the period of time where he, along with most boys, had too much testosterone and not enough brain cells; resulting in too much ill-begotten confidence, and a series of stupid escapades that feel like an entirely different lifetime.

"Speak for yourself, I don't remember any such thing." He reclines back in his camping chair, an unapologetic smirk on his mouth. "Must've breezed right through it." Gideon fibs, the leaping flames from the fire reflected playfully in his eyes.

Yvonne snorted. "Yeah, well, it's not a bar that our own father can cross, now is it?" Grief could drive a person to extremes, but Andrew Rutherford's grief left four kids in its wake, each with open wounds that refused to heal. And yet, Yvonne herself wouldn't exist without the choices he made in his grief-fueled haze. Funny how that worked out.

"Yeah, I sure picked a hell of a time to try and figure out the boundaries of being a stepparent, didn't I?" At least she had a few years of motherhood under her belt to guide with the transition. Every day her understanding of Connie and the fissures in their family deepened just a bit more. Yvonne couldn't imagine trying to navigate motherhood and stepmotherhood all at once when she'd just barely entered into adulthood. "At least I still remember puberty. As awkward and awful as it was."
