I like to think that Dante's shop has a certain rep with the kids around Halloween. Their parents are always telling them "Don't go there" and talking about how the shop owner is weird as hell, but this only makes the kids more curious. So it becomes this thing in town where kids dare each other on Halloween night to go knock on the door or trick or treat there. Whether or not they actually do is a different story entirely.

There's all sorts of rumors and stories among them, too. Stuff like, "I heard the last kid that knocked on the door got dragged in the shop and he was never seen again." Or "I heard some kid got some candy from the shop one year and it poisoned him!" Or "My friend knocked on his door last year, and he said the guy who owns it has wings like a bat and red scales for skin!" None of it is true, it's all just hyperactive imaginations being fed by snippets of parents' conversations, other rumors being spread around, and just plain old misunderstandings (maybe also a dash of one poor child seeing Dante in his trigger form one night).

Dante is oblivious to all this. It's not a surprise to him that kids barely ever come knocking on his door on Halloween. It does just look like a shop on the outside. Most kids wouldn't know it doubles as an apartment. He has no idea that the real reason is the kids think some sort of boogeyman owns the place.

The major reason Dante and Vergil's rivalry works better than almost any other take on the trope is because the games are totally self aware about how dumb and immature the whole trope is and they lean way the hell into it. Like yeah, there's real stakes, turmoil and emotional wounds between them that drive their eternal conflict but at the same time it's pretty obvious that the real reason they fight all the time is because they're both just the biggest goddamn children on the planet.

It really is just playground bickering elevated to apocalyptic proportions by sheer virtue of them both being demigods.
