there's a certain way she looks at him, like she's trying to set him ablaze with her mind. it almost warms him, though he's not sure it's the way she wants him to be. his eyes look up from polishing his sword, a common habit at this point to avert his eyes from her; she had accused him of staring too many times. he looks up as she speaks, brows furrowed at her question. it always felt like a test. like if he said the wrong answer, she would stand there and have him hanged for his crime: being unsatisfying. being boring, worst of all. "it depends. who are you asking me to behead, princess?" his head cocks to the side.

the princess and her appointed knight are now currently locked in a silent staredown. it seems to be the only available pastime left — that is when one has already perused through every worthwhile reading material in the library. he plagues her, as is his assignment, and she plagues him, as a last resort. the silence breaks with a resounding click of her tongue. "would you behead someone for me, if i asked you to?"
