FULL NAME: KIM GANG-NIM [ 김강림 ]

» MEANING: Kim [is written as 김 (gim) in both North and South Korea. The hanja for Kim, 金, can also be transliterated as 금 (geum) which means "gold, metal, iron".]; Gang-nim [강림 (hanja 降臨). descent of a god from heaven to earth.]

NICKNAME: He was called the terror in his days as a human and for good reasons. His mother, when she was alive, fondly called him Nim-nim when he was very little. That didn’t stick because his father never allowed it. He’s just known for his first name to this day.

AGE: 33-years old in appearance, 425-years old.

DATE OF BIRTH: 1597 November 21, Friday. He was born during the time of conflicts within the dynasty - power struggle and also Japan invasion later on.

PLACE OF BIRTH: Hanyang.

OCCUPATION: Essentially, he’s a bodyguard, but the body he’s guarding has no idea....

SPECIES: Human but with supernatural powers.

POWERS: As part of his curse, demon seals appeared on his forearms [ think of Constantine in the film but very different in design, tba] that allows him to access some divine power to exorcise demons/dark spirits, in protection of Namu, mostly. The energy absorb by the seals in his arm is then consumed by his body in the most torturous ways, again, as part of his curse. He did develop superhuman ability in terms of strength and immortality. He does get physically injured when in a fight or in an accident but he heals over-time and faster than a mortal.

» SCARS: Various from accidents and battle. He has a distinctive scar on his left upper arm from an accident back when he was 19 during a hunting game. An arrow grazed him and cut through his attire. It was reported that it wasn’t an accident but actually an attempt on his life since his father who was part of the state council fighting for power within the palace.

FINANCIAL STATUS: Gang-nim was born into a prestigious Kim clan from the Joseon Dynasty and always had wealth. His family owns lands and later on businesses which to a degree, he still access to. He always had a fund put away by his father since he was little that grew in time as he learned to navigate the changing world around him. He put his money into stocks and other businesses his clan owns.

EDUCATION LEVEL: Coming from a rich family, Gang-nim was well-educated during his time. Throughout the many years, he’d taken interest in various subjects and took classes but mostly studied on his own.

DEGREES: In today’s equivalent, he would had a degree in law and he was also interested in the sciences.

SPOKEN LANGUAGES: Gang-nim speaks with an accent. Through the years he learned various languages including Nihonggo, Mandarin, some Cantonese, various dialects, English, French, German. His mother tongue is Hangul. He was educated to read and write in Hanja which was favored by the scholarly elite during the early days. Later on, he adapted Hangul as well.

RELATIONSHIPS

PARENTS: Song Ji-yeong [ mother, d.]; Kim Dong-geun [ father, d.]

SIBLINGS: None legally, but it was reported that Kim Dong-geun had several illegitimate children.

CHILDREN: Gang-nim did father a couple of offspring but the account was that they were also punished because of Gang-nim’s sins. They unfortunately did not survive birth.

SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIPS: Gang-nim entered an arrange marriage with a young woman named Na-mu, age 16 when he turned 20 at his father’s command. The marriage was unhappy and abusive on Gang-nim’s part. He had many affairs and mistresses that caused Na-mu great pain and embarrassment. Unbeknownst to Gang-nim, his young wife truly cared for him. The affection and attention was not reciprocated and Gang-nim continued to do as he pleased. After her second miscarrige, Na-mu went back to her family against everyone’s advice but Gang-nim did not care. Eventually, Na-mu passed and many claimed that she took her own life but the truth was that she passed due to a broken heart and health complications... Na-mu’s family was a clan of shamans who put a curse onto Gang-nim after their daughter’s death. Gang-nim is to roam the earth to search for Na-mu each time her soul returns to take over a new body and life. Gang-nim was to protect Na-mu from all the evils and darkness of the world but he could never have her or any other person for that matter. Gang-nim is to live an immortal life of sadness and pain.

FAMILY HISTORY: Gang-nim was born into a noble clan of Kims in Hanyang. He didn’t grow up with a mother although he’d said plenty of times that he remembers her though she passed when he was two years old. A lot of accounts claimed that Gang-nim’s mother was abused by his father and that she died of a broken mind and heart leaving her only child behind. Gang-nim never had a good relationship with his father whom treated Gang-nim as extension of his property than his own flesh and blood. Gang-nim’s father also had many affairs and did not care if his son witnessed any of them. 

ROMANTIC HISTORY: Gang-nim married a young woman from another noble family named Na-mu but the relationship was never happy. It resulted in two pregnancies that never survive. His abusive behavior resulted to Na-mu’s demise and her family took revenge and cursed Gang-him. Na-mu returned a few times in various status in life in various parts of the world through the years. Na-mu recently returned as a young Japanese man living in the United States...

PHOBIA(S): He will not admit to anything although he feared life every passing day and living it while everyone leaves him behind.
