while agnes had her reservations regarding the group’s intentions, that didn’t mean she took kindly to outsiders voicing their dissent. gael had been in their midst for all but a week, and yet he felt he had enough knowledge to condemn them, which in turn was a judgment passed on agnes herself. whether or not his thoughts were correct, he hadn’t been there nearly long enough to learn just what they were all about, and even if he had, it wasn’t his place to decide how they should or shouldn’t operate. “we’re all very blessed to have received his calling,” she mimicked the same words she’d heard repeated time and time again. “and especially to have found a way to serve him on our own terms.” her tone was a bit more pointed than before, trying to emphasize how everyone in the congregation viewed their position there. they had all joined willingly, and most, if not all, recognized what an honor it was to be a founding member of a truly revolutionary religious subset. “but you are,” she picked up where he trailed off, brows furrowed in poorly veiled frustration. “you are a disruption, whether you mean to be or not. just having you here throws everything out of whack...” if agnes had it her way, they would have no need to bring a man into the mix at all, or anyone outside of the congregation, for that matter. they had everything they needed right there already, and anyone new they allowed in brought with them a great deal of risk. his needling of her regarding sister nora gave her no choice to jump to her defense, even though she shared the same reservations. “i don't appreciate whatever it is you're insinuating... sister nora extended her invitation as a courtesy to you, and this is the behavior you deem appropriate? does sneaking around and reading private documents align with your definition of morality? you're here because she believes it would be beneficial for our group to have a bit more transparency with the public, that's all.” the thought of gael figuring out what he’d been brought there for before it was time to actually enact the plan did cause a panic, but she couldn’t crumble now. sister nora had always placed a great deal of trust in agnes, and as such would be counting on her to do everything in her power to make sure things went smoothly. this would be their first time engaging in the reproductive ritual, and while she still had many questions regarding the logistics of it— who would be chosen to bear the child, and how exactly the act would be carried out to ensure conception— if her leader believed in its efficacy, agnes had no choice but to put her faith in it as well. she’d already made her decision to devote her life to god and, by extension, sister nora, and it would take a lot more than the suspicions of a man to change her mind.
Tumblr media
back at home, the company that gael found himself surrounded with were likeminded sorts, academics and fellow writers, mainly men but that wasn't to say he hadn't spent a good chunk of his life in the presence of women. he'd been raised by two, his mother and her sister, in his later years he'd found himself a wife and they'd had a daughter, though his intense focus on his work had allowed him to push all those meaningful relationships away. all that to say, while he didn’t doubt it was strange for the women who were a part of the congregation to suddenly be around a man, it wasn’t all that simple for him either to be surrounded by people who he couldn’t relate to. that isolation would be key in developing the right feel for his book, though it didn’t serve him in his daily life. “my aunt took me to church every sunday, however i don’t think his word affected me the same way it did you and your peers.” he had no problem with religion, he had a deep fascination for it in actuality, though he found perversions of faith far more interesting than anything their usual core beliefs could offer. "i know it must not seem like i'm trying to be gentle here with my accusations but i am. i don't want to come and cause a scene or disrupt your way of life but…” how was he meant to word what he’d found delicately? the manner of notes he’d discovered were anything but what one would expect from a nun, detailed salacious plans in which a male was needed, it was impossible for gael not to feel as though the pleasantries he’d been offered per his arrival had been given now with less than friendly intentions. “eccentric? that doesn’t bother me. i have known people twice as crazed as her and loved them all the same. no, what bothers me is what lies beneath her mask. you really know nothing about her plans? why she let a man- let me come here?” his name had not been explicitly mentioned within the documents that he had stumbled across but it was hard not to place himself in the shoes of the man written about. when he'd first contacted the congregation and asked to visit and learn about their teachings, he'd been expecting them to say no on account of some need for privacy, yet instead they'd been nothing but forthcoming, almost too much. agnes hadn't appeared nearly as interested in him as the other nuns and he'd taken that as a sign of good faith, that maybe she could be someone he could trust, if only he could get her to see that there was something very wrong going on around them.

it was no secret why gael's presence had caused a stir within the congregation— they so rarely had a man in their midst, and when they did, he was there for a very singular purpose. they all knew the reason he'd been allowed to live amongst them for a short time, that his presence was merely a means to an end, but that didn't stop them from reveling in the titillation of simply being near a member of the opposite sex. of all the things agnes missed about her life before joining the group, men were not one of them. in fact, being surrounded only women at all times had been a major factor in her decision to join sister nora in branching off from the catholic church in order to help be a founding member of a religious group all their own. it had been difficult at first, with little resources and no outside support, only able to rely on the small number of nuns sister nora had been able to recruit for her cause, but she finally felt as though she was a part of something she believed in, something she could devote her life to fully, and her faith far outweighed the material struggle of their beginnings. she wasn't even cognizant of when the group's seemingly pure beliefs had seemed to pervert— it was a gradual process, and by the time agnes began to question the ethics of their actions, she was too deeply entrenched in the group to turn back. "and how were you brought up, exactly? you're familiar with the teachings of the catholic church, i presume." it was only then that she realized her ignorance regarding their visitor may be a detriment; perhaps she'd taken the wrong approach. maybe it would do her well to get closer to him, learn all that she could about his background, just so she was able to properly assess his threat level. he claimed to come with innocent intentions, but she could sense there was something more brewing beneath the surface, perhaps not as sinister as her leader's plans, but some level of duplicity nonetheless. "documents... i'm afraid i don't know what you're referring to." and she didn't. or, at least, she didn't know which documents he was referring to specifically. there was plenty of incriminating evidence contained within sister nora's office; personal journals, annotated religious texts, dossiers full of birth certificates, and passports, and all sorts of records she shouldn't have access to. though she didn't know what exactly he was referring to, the suggestion of having their secrets uncovered too soon caused panic to spike within her, palms growing damp and her heart rate quickening. explicit content? even she wasn't aware of the full extent of sister nora's inner workings, but it must've been truly salacious if it piqued his interest like this. "i apologize, mr. nielsen... i don't mean to feign ignorance, but i'm sure whatever it is you've found isn't what you think it is. sister nora is a very... eccentric character. often misunderstood, i've found, but her intentions are nothing but altruistic."
Tumblr media
everyone had been so kind and accommodating since his arrival, more so than he had been expecting considering the nature of his visit. the congregation had been wary, generous with their time and information but hesitant to ever get too close to him. he was treated like something dangerous, a poisonous flower or wild creature, yet the allure of something new was too much to resist entirely. agnes had been one of the few who had limited her interactions with him almost completely and that strangely made him trust her more than those who he glimpsed fawning over him, though it also made him consider why she had been keeping her distance. he didn’t mean to come in and cause trouble, his intentions had been pure if self indulgent but his nosing around had revealed secrets he was certain sister nora would have preferred left undiscovered. “yes, well… i believe we must have been brought up with different definitions of the word.” he tried to smile, though it read as undeniably fake from the way it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “i don’t want to upset you, really. i just… i was looking where i shouldn’t have been and stumbled upon some troubling documents. my fault, i know, though you’ll have to forgive me for being unable to stop reading when i realised the explicit content.” troubling was an understatement, there was no use of his name within the scribbled notes he’d found while snooping late at night but there were enough context clues for him to fill in the blanks. “you know what i’m talking about, don’t you? please don’t play coy.”

"of course." hopefully her terse smile wouldn't give away just how disingenuous the sentiment was. surely he'd noticed the way she seemed to avoid him at all costs, but it wasn't like the other members of the congregation had been all that forthcoming with their new visitor, either. if anything, most of the women regarded him with a sort of morbid curiosity, treating him like an exotic wild animal usually only available for viewing from afar at a zoo, equal parts cautious and fascinated. they'd gather in little groups to whisper and stare at him from across the way, giggling behind their hands and scurrying off when they drew his attention like giddy schoolgirls. agnes didn't share that same interest. "we're all very excited to have you here." that much was true, at least, though not in the way he might've thought. the group's figurehead, sister nora, had welcomed him in with open arms, only providing him with seemingly simple limitations and boundaries, putting on the welcoming facade of a leader with nothing to hide, but he was a smart man. it wouldn't take long for him to learn just what was going on within the group, what dirty secrets they kept concealed beneath the stiff woolen fabric of their habits— sister nora could only hope he wouldn't put the pieces together until it was time for her to reveal the full puzzle to him. when gael finally exposed the reason for his request to meet with her, she felt her stomach turn to lead, a sudden stifling heaviness overtaking her form as she went deathly still in her chair. "i'm a-afraid i don't know what it is you could be referring to..." she struggled to keep her voice even, tripping over her words nonetheless. "morality is our organization's main concern, as i'm sure you've borne witness to over your time here. i'd be happy to clarify any misconception you might've developed... i'd hate for you to leave here with the wrong impression."
open to: anyone.
featuring: gael nielsen, fourty-three, heterosexual, novelist.
plot: in preparation for his next novel, gael opted to take a more first hand approach in learning about cult life and chose to go spend a few weeks in a small town with a particularly notorious religious organisation running the place. unbeknownst to him, their invitation to have him come stay was made with nefarious intentions and your muse has been tasked with making sure everything goes according to plan.
Tumblr media
"thank you for meeting with me today." as if he didn't know when there would be free time in their schedule and picked the earliest available moment in the day to usher them someplace secluded. he'd spent the last week watching each step of their routine like a hawk, learning the intimate details of the lives those in the cult- or the organisation as he'd been reminding himself to refer to them as. it'd been clear from the start that things were off but that was in part why he had been so excited to come visit. he was looking for troubled minds to base his characters on and a backbone of realism to apply to his novel, if everything was the same as it was back home, there would've been no point making the trip. however, things were starting to feel increasingly unsafe, like he'd waded into waters deeper than he anticipated and now he needed to figure out the quickest way to leave without causing a scene. "i know service starts soon but i felt as though there were some things i needed to discuss with you. i don't know how to say this other than being outright, so i hope you won't be offended by my frankness but i've witnessed things here that... that i don't believe are entirely moral."
