Rei carefully carried the small land shark in his arms snuggling the creature but is still a lot cautious around him.

" .... With all my life my mother and father taught me about family. It's that I will do what it takes to protect you, all of you. "

The baby began reaching his little hand out towards Yabusame, along with his tendril from his third eye. Both he and his third eye are shedding tears from the distress he had recieve from his parents. Seeing this made the satori walked over towards her son and comforts him.

" Shh, my baby it's okay mommy and daddy aren't fighting... "

Yukari seeing her comforting their son made her smile, the child stopped crying and took his father's finger. The baby smiles laughing and the third eye closes because it no longer feels distress.

" I suppose, a break would be nice just for us all, including our baby Koishi... "

" Do you actually think I don't know that, the stress is killing us to an extent.... "

Suddenly Yukari awaken, her eyes now is slowly opened but looked dead from the horrible memories come flooding back into her mind.

Koishi still holding onto her hands she stares directly in her eyes.

“ Are you okay? My beloved Yakumo I’m so sorry… ”

“ Koishi, I-I should be sorry, I don’t know what came over me… ”

“ ….Your mental state, you need some rest I’ll take everything from here, I’m an absolute disgrace, I did this, I did all of this. I’ve caused my wife so much pain… ”

“ Koishi, please stop n-not in front of our son, don’t do this to me now…. ”

“ Yukari…. ”

“Koishi, you really can’t blame yourself for this one. Nobody can, this was just a case of poor timing. Besides…”

“Which is why you two need to take the res of the day off~ If not for yourselves, then certainly for little Koaru here.”

Chapter Fifteen - Choose Your Own Adventure

Haruhi never enjoyed wasting food, especially food that was still technically edible but just charcoaled and... ruined. When she was forced to scrape the burnt chicken curry into the trash can she could only see money piling in the bin. Her rich friends had never teased hunger but she had once before right after her mother passed away... and right now wasn’t a proud moment for her. 

She walked into the den where her friends had gathered to watch an action movie and leaned against the wooden archway with her arms folded across her chest. She eyed each host with irked eyes before making her presence known.

“Hey guys, didn’t I ask one of you to watch the food while I ran to the bathroom?” She asked - or rather accused. 

Hikaru felt the ice in her tone and cautiously spoke up, “Yeah, I watched it.” 

“Well what happened?” Haruhi asked. She had a good idea as to what happened but she wanted her friends to be honest with her and confess. 

“I don’t know,” Hikaru shrugged, “I stirred it a little and I turned the heat up to high. I thought it would cook faster.” 

Haruhi sighed and shook her head, “Just the opposite... I had to throw it away.”

“Wait,” Koaru pipped up, “If you threw it away then what are going to have for dinner? I’m so hungry.” He illustrated his whine by rubbing his flat stomach in broad circles. 

“Don’t worry, we can simple eat at one of the local restaurants nearby. I’ll call for a cab.” Kyoya said, flipping open his cell phone.

“No, no... I’d rather not go out right now. I don’t like the rain.” Haruhi quickly pleaded, relieved when Kyoya nodded and tucked his phone back into his pocket.

“So what will we have for dinner?” Mitsukuni wondered as he rubbed his chin.

Tamaki snapped his fingers, “Gentlemen, we were silly to want chicken for dinner. We can consider this fluke to be a blessing in disguise. We’re beside the ocean! We should indulge in the fresh seafood offered to us. I say we go out and purchase some healthy looking salmon fillets to grill for dinner.” He stood up and pointed towards the ceiling, completely confident in his decision. Thankfully his friends also seemed to agree with the delicious idea. 

“I don’t mind cooking dinner again but if you want fish you better get it soon before it gets too late. It’s not healthy to sleep with a full stomach.” Haruhi advised. She wasn’t entirely sure if that were true or not but she had heard her father warning against late night snacking before with that reason. If she were honest, she was just really hungry and didn’t want to wait long before eating. 

“Fermented vegetables like kimchi and pickled radish would pair really well with the grilled fish.” Kaoru mused. 

Kyoya nodded and stood to join Tamaki, “Alright everyone, I texted for a cab so one should be here any second. Let’s quickly get dinner and bring it back.” 

“If you don’t mind, I’d like to stay behind so I can clean the kitchen.” Haruhi said as she used her apron to polish her thumb nail. She didn’t mind cooing dinner again but she did mind cooking in a dirty kitchen. 

Kyoya and Tamaki both nodded their approval and joined the others by the front door where they were slipping their shoes on. 

Unbeknownst to the group, Mitsukuni motioned for Takashi to bend down for a moment so he could whisper something in his ear. A second later Takashi nodded, quietly pushed his shoes to the side, and carefully backed away as his friends filed outside. 

Once they were buckled in and officially driving off he closed the door and walked into the kitchen. 

“Mori-senpai?” Haruhi was surprised to see one of them had stayed behind. 

“I’ll help clean up.” he offered and joined her by the sink. 

Together they washed the dirty pans and cooking utensils that suffered along with the burnt food. Takashi was strong enough to scrub away the black residue off the pan, proudly showing off his toned arm muscles for Haruhi while she watched beside him. Once the pans, cutting boards, knives, and spatulas were washed, dried, and put away they leaned against the kitchen counter side by side, content with their successful physical labor. 

“Than you for helping me, Mori-senpai.” Haruhi said, “I’m not strong enough to scrub off that burnt food from the pan. I’d have to let it soak overnight.” 

He smiled and patted her head, lightly tussling her hair with his fingers. He didn’t expect to see her lean into his touch with smile. He wondered if she even noticed her own actions. 

“Haruhi -”

Just as he spoke her name thunder clapped outside, ricocheting off the walls and vibrating throughout the house. Haruhi squealed and dropped to her knees on the floor, hugging her legs tightly to her chest. 

“Haruhi?” 

Takashi knew she had a paralyzing fear of thunderstorms and was felt more confident in his decision to stay behind. He didn’t want Haruhi to suffer through this alone while their friends were out, although he was sure once they heard the thunder they’d hurry back home. 

He crouched on the floor beside her and leaned into her, “Are you alright?”

Haruhi began to nod her head but another thunderclap forced her to jump with a muffled squeal. 

Takashi sat himself flat on the floor and carefully slid Haruhi into his lap, gingerly wrapping his arms around her as he pulled her close. Haruhi welcomed the safe warmth his embraced offered and rested her head on his shoulder, keeping her eyes tightly shut. He rubbed circled into her arm with his thumb as he tightened his hold, enjoying the feel of her body cuddled up against him. He wished they could enjoy this closeness under different circumstances but nonetheless he was happy he was there for her, to act as her protector and comfort. 

That’s what he wanted to be for her always; her protector and comfort. If she would have him in the end. 

Haruhi remained in his arms as the storm raged outside. Each time thunder rocked the beach house Takashi held squeezed her tighter and ran his calloused fingers along her spine to soothe her shaking. 

Eventually, to his surprise, Haruhi fell asleep. Her body slumped against his chest with her face nuzzled in the crook of his neck. Her warm steady breaths brushed across his skin, sparking goosebumps in their tread. He looked down at the precious young woman snuggled into him and gently pressed a kiss on her head. 

He lost track of time, only focused on the little one in his protective hold, that he didn’t hear the front door open or the sloshing footsteps approaching the kitchen. 

“I knew I’d find you here...” an jealous voice seethed from the archway.

It all begins here

The comedian Rio Mamiya was at his peak: sold out shows, great star quality and also a lot of money on his bank account.So much money that he could buy love from the very expensive women who were eager to sell for him. He was never someone that took love seriously, he liked being free in the world. His career also never allowed it: moving from city to city, a long and established relationship with someone was very difficult to maintain. But Rio was starting to get old and to feel lonely. It wasn’t a lover that he craved for. He have got bored of them too easily and that wasn’t the void the void he wanted to fill in his life: growing up as only child and raised by a single mother, he wanted a deeper connection. He wanted a kid. He ached for that single person in the whole world that would love him no matter what, he wanted to see a little boy or girl growing up and keeping up with their steps. He just wanted to be a father.

July 4th, 2000 (8 months)

A small korean boy was admitted to the St.Jude orphanage in the crowded streets of Tokyo due to parental neglect. The boy was denuded and with signs of abuse and violence all over his fragile body, even though being only a few months old. The mother was schizophrenic and the father too old to have the energy to interrupt his wife, so the newborn became the target of the woman’s psychological fury. Rio eventually came across the news, which came out in the main newspapers of the city at the time and curious, went to meet the child. He was a baby: he wasn’t even a year old! When he held the boy on his lap it was as if fate had taken him that moment: an instant connection and he couldn’t stop thinking about the little guy. In a matter of weeks he went there with all the paperwork filled and ready to adopt the boy, whom he named Kaoru after his grandfather.

January, 2003 (3 years)

Little Kaoru was full of questions and curiosities, energetic and it was clear how much he loved being alive because a smile never left his face. Rio decided to omit his son’s obscure past and it’s adoption, hoping that when he’s older he could explain what happened, but it was still too early: At that moment he wanted to enjoy fatherhood. He was treated with the most diverse mime and the media loved the little bug, since Rio started creating sketches about life as a single father.

September, 2004 (4 years)

Kaoru had lots of energy. A LOT of energy. His nanny went crazy behind him and so did Rio, especially during bedtime. It looked like the young one was plugged 24 hours straight! After many therapy sessions, he decided to put Kaoru in some sport to spend all that accumulated energy he had. He tried swimming, basketball, tennis … nothing lasted until soccer.

February, 2007 (7 years)

Kaoru was becoming more and more in love with the sport, especially since his father had enough money to take him to all the important games. Rio’s popularity was steadily increasing with his ‘Single-Parent Satire’ show, gaining recognition across the entire Asia. Since he had no constant feminine examples in his life, Kaoru ended up being a lot like his father, but without a passion for comedy - that passion part was already taken by soccer.

May, 2009 (10 years)

It was a complicated year for both Kaoru and Rio: after a sex-tape leaked on the internet with Rio and a courtesan as the main stars, he received hate from the general public. But that wasn’t the worst for Rio! The worst thing on that problematic year was when Kaoru was diagnosed with HIV positive after he collapse in the middle of a soccer game. Apparently his biological parents had no idea they carried the virus, so it wasn’t on his medical records. Rio felt betrayed because he never knew that. For many years he preferred to leave the media to be able to take care of Kaoru and not to ‘clean’ his image as they used to speak. Rio also failed to explain Koaru what he had and just called his cocktail of remedies ‘vitamins to improve his soccer skills’.

August , 2012(12 years)

After successfully directing a hit comedy film, Rio regained media recognition and former fans once again showed their support with his director career and he earned numerous opportunities to direct both comedy and television shows . He explained to Kaoru about his illness, the care he should have and most importantly, not to tell anyone about it, since they could see him with different eyes.

January , 2013 (13 years)

King received a tempting proposal to work with the famous Korean rapper / singer Psy as assistant director of his videos. The only problem? He would have to move to Korea. Even vocalizing that he didn’t want to leave, Kaoru and his father moved to Seoul in a few months.

August,  2014 (14 years)

Kaoru had left puberty behind: 178 cm tall (and still growing) and a tonned taned body because of soccer plus the charm he learned after seeing his father with his ladies friends , it was inevitable his popularity within the female audience. Despite the illness, he never stopped ‘enjoying’ life, always taking proper care of course. He earned the title of 'man whore’ during middle school and flirted with anything wearing that wore a skirt.

January, 2015 (15 years)

Kurin? More to 'egocentric kids with problems of narcissism without consistency’. This is why he denied it willingly when he was offered a place at school (thanks to his father’s contacts). Among all schools, he would never feel comfortable enough at Chunghwa due to the lack of intelligence, Kurin was full of bullshit and Techon … what even was a techon? Dongnam was the most viable option, despite their status. After all they were focused on sports! And the directors of Dongnam also didn’t deny Rio’s generous donation to the men’s soccer team. Kaoru was his beloved child, if he wanted anything, Rio wouldn’t mind to hand to him.

What Kaoru didn’t tell him though was that he was beginning to feel pangs of pain in his chest during some games, but he would never admit it: The chances of his father prohibiting soccer and what would he be without it? He had no other talent (well … he had other talents, You just had to be alone with him in a bedroom to be able to see it.) And he wasn’t necessarily smart.

Kaoru is soccer and soccer is Kaoru. He can’t afford to lose the one thing he really is passionate about.

Meanwhile . . .

Right back into the nightmarish quagmire that was metro city filled with the undead, mutations, evolved animals and the post humans Homo-librium Rei and Koaru had decided to hunt down prey on their own while the pack remain stationed and as they search for deer through this desolate ruins of the once beloved city the two stopped as they come across a bizarre creature that seemly part canine and part great white with a collar around it's body. This creature is a land shark by the name of jeff. Jeff long before the outbreak was beloved by many including the avengers but his owners are all dead now and he's all alone. The fact this poor creature survive this long is truly a miracle.

Rei couldn't believe the sight he's seeing as the boy smiles and decides to go near the small creature calmly and cautiously without trying to scare it. He tells Koaru to stay put while hands this.

" Stay here... "

" Wait you're killing it without me? No fair-! "

Of course Rei took offense to what the other apex predator has said thinking that Jeff is food. Rei took it upon himself to choose a different solution as he got closer towards the small creature.

" Hello there small one... "

Jeff upon being spooked by Rei the small shark creature immediately growled and try intimidating the taller male and will even attack him if he gets closer.

" GHRRRRRRRRRR!! "

" HRRRRR !! "

Rei despite his small size he's intimidated showing that he's actually afraid since the son of Hsien-Ko has both the mind and instincts behaves like actual animals but he kept his composer and try reasoning to Jeff that he isn't a threat while respecting the small creature's space.

" O-Oh I'm not here t-to hurt you please calm down I..um... "

Jeff stopped his aggression seeing that the boy isn't going to attack he moves closer to him and examining him out of curiosity all while Rei is cautious not only for his safety but also for himself.

" Hnnnggg? "

Blink blink.

" . . . I'm friend you? Alone? That collar. "

Rei carefully reached out to the creature's collar reading his name.

" Jeff, you're name is Jeff. You lost owner have you? "

The boy sighed no longer feeling afraid and actually felt sympathy for the creature and the death of it's owners.

" Come with me. You'll be safer with my pack. They won't hurt you, you'll be family would you like that? "

Jeff instantly sparked in absolute joy smiling towards him. Jeff finding not only a new owner but also a new family made the shark happy no longer being alone.

" MRRRAAAAUUHHH ! ! "

" Duh it's the apocalypse! Blood, gore galore Rei... "

He let out a deep sigh.

" ......No I genuinely mean it, Koaru. "

" Eer riiight.... "

" OOH! does that mean you'll carry me? I am rather lazy after all! "

" You're a dragon, you can fly.. "

" Rei, do you think we'll ever find your mother through this hell of a wasteland? "

" Of course mother always leave a trail of scent I can smell it.. "

10:01 P.M.

As nightfall begun to commence Rei and the rest of his pack seek shelter where only the lights are since for the night feeders have appeared like bats out of hell these vicious nocturnal creatures began their search into the skies to find and devour their prey to nothing but piles of vicera. That's not all for a few days since Hsien-Ko's disappearance they come across a new species of plant based bio organic weapon that resembled large stalks. These fungal growths are as tall as a building and more horrifyingly enough these stalks are carnivorous by nature as the group see as looking closely. The tree have absorbed multiple victims that were very unlucky and worse these victims are alive and kept in a state of euphoria feeling such intense happiness as the stalks absorbed their bodies whole. These are call the blight. Carnivorous fungal stalks that absorbed organic life upon physical contact but as long as they do not touch the stalks they should be fine. Even the luminous gold glow keep away the night feeders they hate even the dimmest of light.

Looking closer to the victims Frank stared in horror as the victims are Skrulls aliens that try to take over the planet through both the ability to take shape and absorbing powers from other heroes. Even these masters of illusion could not survive the T-Erebus virus and it's mutagenic affects of every organism in the planet. The skrull like the rest of the victims are entering the state of euphoria the intense happiness as they don't want to be free, they're happy when in reality they're nothing but food. Nutrients for these fungal organisms to reproduce more of them.

" Oh my god, the Skrull. Listen Kid... "

He gulped.

" The skull are not good people but they don't deserve this fate you know? "

Rei doesn't care about them, it's better them then the pack. Rei has insisted Frank and the rest keep moving and leaving them to die a slow agonizing death so long as they don't touch them they should be fine. The blight do not have methods of forcing their victims to touch them. Once touch is a slow trip to the grave.

" Keep moving, better them than us, they're already dead there is no point in saving them.... "

Koaru felt shivers down his very spine at the blight and the victims. It reminded him too much of his species wiping out to extinction leaving him the last of his kind.

" ...... Rei, I'm scared. "

Rei turned around seeing Koaru feel fear he quickly hold his hand ensuring him that there isn't nothing to be afraid of. He saw those eyes when he first met the dragon.

" Koaru, I know you're afraid but they won't hurt you, they won't harm you as long as you don't touch them. I promise you, just focus on me okay? "

Koaru hearing this reluctantly nodded his head taking deep breaths holding his hand tightly as he focus on the half breed.

" T-thank you Rei-Rei... "

The traumatized makai dragon stayed close to the half breed as the rest continued to walk through the blights carefully not touching them.

The hunter in front of him begun to swear mimicking the things the makai dragon is saying similar to a parrot.

" FUCK !

FUCK !

FUCK ! "

" YEEEAAAAAAHHHHH!!!! "

And then rei got mad at him for making one of his hunters swear for amusement he understands that Koaru is bored but this is no excuse to use them for entertainment and worse yet? He's gonna listen to this all day.

" WHAT ARE DOING TO MY HUNTERS KOARU?!?!?! "

" Rei I got an idea! You ever heard of a garden hose? "

Rei let out a his stand on all fours spring up with his pointing up. He couldn't tolerate swimming in water.

" MRRREEEEOOW!! "

Koaru forgets his friend is part cat.

" Uh oh... "

She replied to the boy using sign language ensuring him that things will be fine so long as Rei keeps them safe.

" Worry not. You will keep us safe in the end, we're together... "

" men have guns, guns that kill us. Men are not like Frank they do not understand... "

After talking about Frank she did become curious as to why he trusted Frank a human who should be afraid of them.

" Frank is man, why trust him? Why he not afraid? "

" Frank is friend, he is brave, a nuisance but not only that. He is my friend. Frank may not be like us nor will he understand but he help me. I need him alive he knows my mother... "

" I see.... "

Koaru bumped in appearing between the hunter and Rei.

" What you guys talking about ? "

" Ugh Koaru...! "

" What? I thought you guys were talking about hunting! "

Rei couldn't help but to smile and chuckle.

" I wish we were, Koaru.... "

Meanwhile, Metro City...

' Hrrrrggg.. '

' Hniiff! hniff ! '

For a while now Rei along with his allies he had welcomed into forming into his pack continued their search for Rei's mother and the rest of his family. The ground had now decided to stay put catching a break from walking as one of the pack members is just searching for food through the garbage bin by the name of Chompy. Chompy is Rei's first pet and he's a B.O.W. created similarly like hunters except he was created using the T-virus combining human, Piranha, and the great white shark DNA making Chompy a proficient killing machine and those jaws and claws are made to cut through anything he sees as prey.

Rei watches chompy eating garbage out of a garbage bin while the boy wear both gloves in his hand and a scarf around his neck just cause it felt soft. The half breed turned to the others direction checking if they're fine.

" Tired yet? "

Koaru waves sitting besides Frank.

" Yeah we're good Rei by the way you looking pretty cute! "

His face becomes partially red.

" .... I'm not that cute but thanks. "

With a mutilated A-virus zombie in his hand the tyrant Blitzkrieger a ww1 themed tyrant created by the german scientists from the cult which went awol and killed the german scientists and met up with Rei and his rag tag team of monsters and one very noisy reporter. Blitzkrieger is by all accounts is a megalomaniac who enjoys destruction and all sorts of weapons mainly ones that burns or blow his victims to bits.

" Ja! This is going to be soo much fun, when are we killing Rei? I want to burn stuff! HAHAHAHA!! "

Koaru and Rei does not like blitzkrieger's thirst for blood since both he and Koaru like the rest follow their instinct. Unlike him.

" The hell is wrong with you blitz? "

" We're not killing anyone unless we're hungry or when they attack us first. We kill to survive, not for pleasure. Survival is our own war... "

Frank butts in still uneasy about the killing. He understands Rei but unfortunately he doesn't understand fully that Rei unlike some follows basic instincts like Koaru and the rest of the hunters. Rei and Koaru are more animal than man.

" God damn... "

The largest and most disfigured out of the hunters Gracie appeared besides Rei while she watches over the pack.
