"My mother was… sweet," Cole tells Morro as he holds a bouquet of flowers, walking through a luscious green field with the company of Morro by his side.

The ghost only nods in acknowledgment, as he looks away from his current companion. Whilst he floats among the living things which make up the ground, his translucent shadow casting only a small light in the grassy patches below, Cole wastes no time stomping on unsuspecting, fallen dead leaves from the trees surrounding them. The shadows of the branches were to thankfully cast out the glower of the sun currently gazing at them, the asphalt path clear but winding all the same. If only the wind can get him out of here by raising a tempest; yet, it was calm today, so out of character for it. The wind, it seems, does not wish to be disturbed. And Morro can respect its wishes, for he is the Master of Wind, after all. The wind rustled between the leaves and branches, a cadence of nature springing from it.

The only reason why Morro is here is, well, Cole requested for him to come, and, confused by the Earth Ninja's invitation, he complies. It's not like he doesn't have anything to do today other than endure the other's judgemental looks. Besides, he didn't even know what Cole was planning to spend the day with and was surprised he opt to buy a bouquet of varied colorful flowers from the flower shop. But, it makes sense as they continue to walk towards his destination.

It seems that Cole Brookstone wanted Morro to be present as he pays his respects to his deceased mother.

Why? Morro did not know either. He is dead and he has forgotten how to both be alive and deceased at the same time.

Is this some form of a sick joke in which Cole indirectly wants to tell Morro he belongs in the ground?

Whatever it was, well, he did not have the evidence for his intentions yet.

So, after another rustling of Wind, he speaks, slow, soft, a tad calmly. "I won't say the same thing about my mother. She is sour, all the way through."

Cole makes the mistake of laughing, thinking the other was joking. However, seeing Morro's deadpan serious face, he clears his throat. "Oh. I'm sorry."

"It's fine." Morro returns to his humanoid form, not wanting to float around grass like some speck of nonfiction being. Or maybe, he wanted to mirror Cole's movements, to get himself to act like he was human again, stepping on leaves and hearing them crunch. He ignores how his steps were as silent as the night, blending in with the quietness of his surroundings, failing to step on leaves as he does so. "I actually met my mother. In the Cursed Realm, I mean. My sisters, too."

The young man raises a brow. "Oh…" He tries to think of something to say, and he chooses the wrong question. "How did you react?"

He shrugs. "I killed the only thing that is alive left— the physical embodiment of their soul. Flayed them when they are ghosts, before casting them off to the Foot of the Preeminent. They were rotting there."

He can hear the pin drop as Cole's voice becomes a bit too hard to decipher and read.

“... Oh.” This one was a more definitive statement. It's funny to Morro if he was not currently in an awkward engagement with the Master of Earth, who is, in fact, going to the burial place of his mother. Morro should do the same, finding his family’s burial place— so he could add insult to injury by spitting on it.

"I'm glad your mother isn't shitty, though." He veers the topic back to the conversation starter in which this happened.

Cole gives Morro a defensive look. “She is the sweetest person you will ever meet.”

Morro bites back the urge to say that she is dead, perhaps slumbering in the Departed Realm so that the Master of Earth would not call to his title and throw soil on his face. It is clear that the young man respects his mother as he does Master Wu.

So, he steers the conversation to a different subtopic. Looking at the sun in disgust (for it was so bright, so hot, to the point it boils his skin alive), he looks back at Cole. “So, what gives?”

“What do you mean?”

“Why did you ask me to come with you on this highly-personal journey?” Morro forcefully inquires, feeling tons of flummoxing emotions, each one of them unpleasant, roiling in his spectral stomach. He looks down, hating the fact he could not see his shadow. “Don’t you have your dad to help you through this… occasion?”

The Master of Earth smiles, exhaling peacefully as the breeze whips past him. He looks up to the branches, “Morro, what do you think of death?”

Out of all the questions Cole has the nerve to ask, he had to choose the most specifically sensitive question out of them all. It was a loaded, very intrusive inquiry that Morro wishes he’s never specifically thought about it for too long. Because, by technicality, he died forty years ago, forever stuck in a body that will not age, but will never forget all the crimes that were done unto it. And he didn’t want to think about death; not then, and not now, either. Because, if he keeps circling back to the topic, he would think of all the dead things in the world — which includes him — and he will go through another needless spiel about how he should have been dead. And, since this little monologue never benefits anyone, he keeps it to himself.

“Complicated feelings over it,” Morro answers, narrowing his eyes as another bout of depression and overwhelming sadness comes to him.

Cole nods sympathetically. “Yeah, I understand that, too.”

“Then why did you ask me about it?!”

The young man chuckles good-naturedly. “You were never mentioning the fact that you’re dead so I just… assumed.”

“The assumption that I’m so blasè about death is getting quite repetitive,” Morro replies with a huff. “I died. I got killed over the delusion of destiny.”

The other man sighs. “Yeah, that’s… I think everyone would have strong opinions over death.”

Morro turns to look at him. “You’ve been surrounded by death all your life.”

Cole’s smile fractures a little. “I… guess.”

“You don’t need to hide it,” Morro says with a small scowl. There was some nuance of softness there. “When are we going to reach your mother’s burial place?”

“Just a little bit further,” he replies with a smile. “You’re not walking, so I’m not sure how you’re tired.”

“I’m perplexed about how you made me accompany you into this stunt of yours.”

He shrugs lightly. “Maybe I’m irresistible.”

Morro frowns. “Ugh, you, irresistible? Has dating Kai rubbed off on you?”

“Hey, as much as I hate people dissing my boyfriend, you gotta learn he sucks at pick-up lines.”

Morro snorts, before becoming invigorated by this conversation. He and Cole never have the chance to talk, outside of more business-related questions or conversations which usually end with Cole loving his physical form more than the corporeal form he had temporarily for almost a year. His green-gold eyes turn to look at the bouquet of flowers that Cole is currently holding, and an idea strikes him. He is, after all, meeting one of his team’s (a term that is so foreign in his tongue that he couldn’t understand why he is currently calling them with it) beloved and esteemed members.

He finds a bush filled with colorful flowers, before plucking one of them from the stem from it. His touch was ginger, and he smells the fragrance of the flowers. The wind seems pacified by this.

“What are you doing?”

“I am about to meet your mother,” Morro replies shortly. “I think that the lovely woman should be offered a few more flowers.”

Cole stares at him with an unreadable look, before he smiles, the earth raising to become a mountain. “I think Mom will appreciate it.”

thDO I SMELL THE PEN FROM THAT OC POST...

thank you so much!! as promised,, I am about to absolutely lose it about my boy Zaro because I haven’t done it yet on this blog

so here goes!

warning: this is gonna be a long post!! i’m gonna be tagging it with #long post, #long reads, and #infodump in regards to the post size so if you want to go past or blacklist those tags feel free!!

I would like to introduce you to the one and only Zaro, my most treasured villain OC and my pride and joy

is he dramatic enough to actually canonically do this? absolutely.

first I’ll ramble about the creation of this boy because unlike a lot of my OCs a lot went into his creation! he was actually named by an old friend of mine whilst we were in like... year 5 of primary school (so we would have been 9 or 10 i think) and i designed him to be your typically scary evil villain, as a 9 year old would. little did young me know how much i would come to love him...

originally, his design was a black dragon with eyeburning pure blue wings, blue emo hair, and scars absolutely everywhere. and, of course, i gave him red eyes. this turned out to be a fatal flaw, because despite him now being heterochromatic, i am too attached to the red eyes to make at least one eye anything other than red. i just thought... well i gotta make him look edgy and evil! so i did.

he started out with a very basic backstory: he is jealous of the protagonist because she’s part of a prophecy and he’s not.

and so my boy was made...

.

but over the years, Zaro began to evolve. I took off his blue hair for starters and gave him some neat basic lightning horns instead of just a spike. he started to lose his scars because he had no reason to have them other than for edgy points.

I started to work on his personality, and he started to change from just ‘big evil’ to having some other character traits. he was still your big bad evil boy, but now he had charisma and a sense of abstract and dark humour. he had some wit and tact but was impulsive.

his backstory got some modifications, too. he got a brother who he has a love-hate relationship with, and a dad who he refuses to speak about. he was the one that was always avoided by others, because he’s just dang scary sitting there and watching things go on around him like a cat watching a mouse

his foundation was there! finally i began to craft the story. simple enough - Zaro learns about the prophecy, gets crazy jealous, and starts to go after every single fire dragon fitting the description of ‘fire dragon’. any and all fire dragons were in danger. he killed without mercy

but as the years went by since his creation, i started to think more and more about Zaro the more I drew him. he got a few redesigns which quite frankly he needed, but this time there was more to it than just making him look evil. and he got a lot more added to his personality...

so, how did he get to where he is now with his first and second book design?

the first thing i did was pulled some weight from his frame, which you can definitely see in the picture of him at the start of this. and this actually had a reason in both design and backstory. for design purposes, it is meant to portray fragility, both physically and mentally. because Zaro has never been a character that uses or relies on strength. he’s strangely spindly for the most dangerous dragon in Murquah, and others underestimate him. they see his fragility as weakness. and that is very important to his character.

over time i also desaturated the colours on his wings into a mix of duller blue and purple with some star speckles to connect him to another important character, the devil themself, No Star. also, it looked waaay better.

i also tried changing his eyes to a cold, bright cyan. but as mentioned earlier, i was too attached to the red eyes. however, i had an idea, and instead of keeping them red i decided to make Zaro heterochromatic. believe it or not, this was a design choice that was more deliberate than just me refusing to let go of the red, though... that was definitely also true

next i need to delve into his backstory...

to explain the next two categories as well as to elaborate a little on his design, i need to share his backstory, which has... changed so much since he was first created. so buckle in, here’s his new and updated life story! this is gonna be long so feel free to skip but some things in the next categories might not make sense so just be prepared!

Zaro was born into a faction of dragons on Murquah named after his father, Night Whisper (who i will refer to as NW). he was raised by his mother for a few years until she had a daughter. they were extremely close growing up, he and his sister. she was everything that he knew and loved, because their father was extremely negligent. he was never there for his kids and acted as though they were just more basic members of the faction and nothing more than disposable. and to make matters worse, their mother left a few years after Zaro’s sister was born, never to return to NW or her children. Zaro had his sister and only his sister, who as they grew up was always there to support Zaro with his growing mental health issues, and she always kept to herself.

Zaro, however, started to help when his sister started to show distress. a very certain kind of distress. Zaro had no idea what it was until finally it came out, and he was told, that his sibling felt a disconnect to their agab. Zaro had no idea what to think but he tried to be there throughout it all. he learned that his sibling’s distress was caused by being constantly called by female pronouns, and by a female name, and by being seen as female by everyone. they expressed that in their head, they were just as much of a male as Zaro, and that they knew they weren’t the girl everyone thought they were. and so Zaro that day learned that no, this wasn’t his sister. this was his brother now, and his brother’s name was Bolt. Zaro struggled at first to break his habits but out of love and out of only ever having Bolt to rely on, he took to it after time without flaw, and accepted his brother completely as the guy he was, even if he was trans.

Zaro around about this time also met a dragon named Tempest. the two hit it off pretty quickly and bonded over not being treated well by their dads. NW at this point had taken to shaming and insulting Zaro and Bolt, disrespecting them and pushing them down, making them feel powerless and worthless. so Tempest was welcome as someone else to care about and to care for him. they fell slowly but surely in love. she announced one day that she was pregnant and he was absolutely thrilled to be a father. Zaro’s life was getting better. his father was an ever-present shadow over his shoulder but he at least now had two things to live and work for

as a punishment for falling in love and an attempt to isolate him from his partner, NW appointed Zaro as the teacher of an orphan cruelly named Crocodile Mouth. Croc was shy and lacking self-esteem and, seeing this new challenge only as a punishment (which he was justified in believing), he started to grow cruel. he desperately clung to the new control over something, ANYTHING, that he’d been given, and whenever Croc would oppose that or show any kind of misunderstanding, he took it as a complete disregard of Zaro’s power over him, and he would grow more and more agitated. Zaro was beginning to crack under his father’s pressure and his desperate reach for control and authority.

but things kept getting worse. one day, early in the morning, his brother brought him out to the border. this would be the last day they spent together as true brothers, without any bad blood. Zaro thought it to be just one of their regular outings, until Bolt solemnly told him that it was over and he was leaving. Bolt expressed that the abuse from their father was getting too much and that in order to do the right thing for himself he had to leave and find his way away from the faction and his father. Zaro opposed this, terrified that his newfound grasp on life was slipping, and he got upset with Bolt to the point where their final interaction was a terrible argument. Bolt bitterly said goodbye and left in a flurry of anger and bitterness, leaving Zaro without his brother, the only family member he ever loved and felt loved by.

this sparked within Zaro something new. not only was his mental illness now going completely unspoken of, but his constant rejection and family issues started him believing that his family was bad, and he was too. he started to tell himself constantly that he wasn’t good enough to be good. he started to believe that he was going to follow in their footsteps and his time to be cruel was coming, despite it already having started. so he started to get worse. he started to become even more cruel, especially to poor Croc. not once did he ever direct it at Tempest, though

his children were born and he was offered a new spark of joy. he began to treat his interactions with his two sons, Darmith and Davreth, as a blessing and the only happiness alongside Tempest in his life. but his cruelty to others only grew. Tempest feared for the wellbeing of her children, scared that they would learn his ways, and after consideration and watching her former sweetheart hurt others, she left and took her sons with her

this was Zaro’s breaking point. he was completely alone, and he couldn’t see why. he didn’t understand what he’d done that was so unjustified that she left. in his mind he found reasons and excuses for his cruelty to Croc and others, so he couldn’t understand at all why she would leave, and why Bolt would leave, and why everyone was hurting him. and so he decided he was taking full control. nobody was ever going to hurt him again. that night, he attacked his father, killing him violently and leaving him with three final words: “Kill the tradition.”

he took over Night Whisper as a faction, punishing those who tried to leave with death and starting to grow it into a group that followed him loyally regardless of anything at all. he controlled them, he had all the power he’d been robbed of his entire life. they were his. this hunger for power led him to establish the fighting arena where he’d pit prisoners against each other, a reminder that he is in control always, and that his will was the way it would go, and that his way was the right way to ensure nobody in NW would ever go through his plight or put him through his plight ever again.

now that’s out of the way, i can explain his new personality!

as a result of his upbringing, he has been made to always feel powerless. this led him to crave control and power, which he actively seeks out and strives for. this eventually twisted into a larger need for control than just with his feelings. he can’t let go and accept change or the random events in life. this has also led him to be quite manipulative.

he sees the worst in others and himself. this has brought him his suspicious nature and cynicism, which sometimes keeps him safe and other times turns away those he might have grown close to.

he often hides this with aggression or humour, which is most of what others see and perceive of him. some of this is entirely genuine and other times it’s him coping. his humour is mostly dark and abstract, and he can be quite genuinely funny at times.

he’s charismatic and despite his cruelty, dragons often feel compelled to follow him or be in his presence. whether this is due to some unseen natural force, his almost otherworldy presence, or something else entirely is unknown, and varies from dragon to dragon.

Zaro is also very erratic. he often acts without thinking and from his heart, which can be both a blessing and a curse. this is symbolized by his red eye.

mentally, Zaro can be hard to predict or decipher. he suffers from PTSD and schizophrenia which can often lead to his thoughts and actions being spontaneous or disorganised. due to having nobody to talk to about or help with his mental illnesses, some of his symptoms are quite severe a lot of the time. Zaro has no idea he has either of these illnesses and assumes that it’s just a part of his personality that cannot be changed.

his role in book one and two of Seeking Revenge

so, Zaro is the main villain of the first four books. he’s first portrayed as the BBEG, as we are introduced mainly to his arena, and also because the first book is narrated by one of his victims. he pushes them too hard and one day one of them escapes.

Zaro is horrified and enraged, because not only has his champion pit fighter escaped, who he took pride in controlling, but he starts to think that she’s the one prophesied to end his reign, and he is not a fan of that idea whatsoever. so he spends book one trying to kill her and declaring war. he ends the book realising she wasn’t the prophesied dragon, but he ends her life regardless, losing his own in the process. kind of. he dies, everyone is certain of it, but at the very end of the book his eyes open once again.

in book two, he becomes more erratic and desperate, because he doesn’t know who the fire dragon destined to take him down is. any fire dragon he sees is immediately killed. the war continues until suddenly Blaze’s daughter, who Zaro didn’t know of, steps into the war with his huge army (who wouldn’t follow a dragon who came back from the dead?) and fights against him. but she’s weaker than her mother and crumbles easily, and the war continues. he also in this time finds love again and has a daughter. during this time he also kills one of his sons, Davreth, who is leading the opposing side.

Zaro is satisfied now, sure that his job has been completed, so he settles back into the war. however, whilst making a speech, he is seemingly assassinated and his body is taken, and the war rages on, this time under his daughter’s reluctant and scared command.

whilst he is absent, he undergoes some character development...

so what changes?

Zaro starts to learn more about the opposing side’s war efforts, and also takes his time away from the war to think clearly for once. the more he thinks the colder he gets, thinking over everything he’s been through and continues to go through.

in addition to this, his appearance has changed. his body has been ruined. he has lost his red eye and his face is in tatters, scarred severely. his body is equally as injured and he’s missing an entire wing. he realises, after a flashback to what occurred after he was taken, that Bolt did this.

when he reemerges into the war, he is a colder and more calculated dragon, terrifyingly so. there’s nothing remaining of his recklessness.

this is symbolised by his remaining eye, the icy cold blue one. his red one is gone, showing the change from erratic to calculated. his wounds also symbolise that he’s letting go of his desperate need for Bolt and reassurance, since up until this point he’s been trying to find it again.

in book three...

the war’s severity grows as Zaro makes a thrilling return, taking back over from his daughter. he loves her with all his heart but struggles to give her the attention she needs and she starts to come out less and less with time. he starts to take more extreme measures and in his hunger for power he summons the banished god Nightborn to aid in his fight. this leads, however, to this death of his beloved, and this pushes him to his next extreme. he no longer needs to take control of the other army. no, he needs to kill them all. (after his wife’s death i also plan for him to get a male lover since Zaro is indeed bi. they’ll have build up throughout the three books)

this gets worse and worse until the end of book three. his other son takes action, fuelled by hatred for his father and grief over Blaze’s daughter and his brother, and he challenges Zaro to a duel atop Murquah’s volcano. here, Zaro meets his demise

a finishing note

Zaro is very important to me, and to the story. he is one of the four portrayals of PTSD and its effects. he shows the more violent and negative outcome of trauma. he not only chooses not to change, but he feels that he can’t, due to everything he’s been through. this is the direct opposite to the first protagonist, who also has PTSD but handles it differently and has different outcomes. his trauma doesn’t excuse any of his actions of course.

Zaro, reacts with rage and hatred, which he is absolutely allowed to feel. he embraces it and comes to rely on the bad feelings to feel good, never opening up and instead letting everything fester. his portrayal is about how trauma can send people down the wrong path and change them negatively, especially without help. he refuses any help, it’s hard to explain, it moreso shows itself through his story. he’s going to be similar to killers in real life whose unfortunate childhoods and lack of help sent them spiraling

it’s also similar to my experiences with the angry and violent feelings that PTSD can bring. of the four portrayals of PTSD, Zaro’s is the most one with the most negative outcome. there is another portrayal very similar to his through his son that follows a very similar process but ends more positively (though still tragic)

so there we go, it’s done. I have successfully rambled and explained one of my OCs as the ask indicated, and I’ve had a blast doing it. I genuinely want to thank you for sending in the pen, I love my OCs more than I love myself tbh so rambling about them or receiving asks about them brings me so much genuine joy

Shadowbringers Tank Thoughts! [FFXIV]

Well, with patch 5.2 out with a singular change to any of the tanks (WAR’s shield on Shake it Off went up to 12% of Maximum HP to 15% of Maximum HP at base), it is as good a time as any to make this post. I’ll go over all 4 tanks and describe how I’m feeling about them, maybe with some initial impressions mixed in there as well. Let’s start with the ARR jobs and work towards the ShB tank with GNB. First up, the angriest job: WAR!

Warrior (WAR):

FELL CLEAVE! FELL CLEAVE! FELL CLEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVE! The one button that changed tanking forever. Seriously, every tanking job has their Fell Cleave button. For PLD it is Holy Spirit, for DRK it is Bloodspiller and for GNB it is Burst Strike. So, what did WAR get with Shadowbringers? Not too much, but what it got was quite nice.

It got a combo skill from Overpower called Mythril Tempest and unlike Overpower it is a circle around you instead of a cone ahead of you, more on that later

Mythril Tempest also extends the Storm’s Eye buff and it gives 20 Beast Gauge

It got Nascent Flash, which is a buff you put on someone and for 6 seconds (roughly 3 GCDs if done well) you give them 10% mitigation and heal them based on the damage you do. You also get healed for 200% of the same amount you heal them (or they get healed for 50% of the same amount you heal yourself)

It also got Chaotic Cyclone and Inner Chaos, essentially roided up versions of Decimate and Fell Cleave that always direct crit and they look like Steel Cyclone and Inner Beast

So WAR didn’t change much from SB to ShB and honestly, there is nothing wrong with that. Do I wish it got a few more things to play around with? Absolutely. Do I think WAR is in a bad spot? Hell no. It is amazing on the self mitigation side and its damage, while definitely lower than GNB/PLD and while arguably (depends on what level you are preforming) DRK, is still quite good. Overal, if I had to give an arbitrary number to rate WAR with, I’d give WAR a solid 8/10. Also, as a quick aside, it feels weird to have a cone AoE combo into a player based circle AoE. I’d personally like it if WAR got 2 cone AoEs, though they would’ve had to extend the range of each a bit (around 10 yalms instead of the current 8).

Paladin (PLD): HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! IT IS FINALLY TIME THAT WE’VE BEEN LEGITIMATELY BETTER THAN WAR FOR A COUPLE OF PATCHES! MWAHAHAH- ahem I mean... the shield of the party is up next. PLD, with it being my main in the short while I played HW and the entirety of SB (I’ll get to ShB main at the end), definitely has a soft spot in my heart. But what did PLD actually get?

Well, it got a combo skill from Total Eclipse called Prominence. Prominence also gives MP back when used (only in the combo)

It got an AoE version of Holy Spirit called Holy Circle

It got a gap closer called Intervene, which has 2 charges

It got a system called Sword Oath, which gives you a use of a skill called Atonement. At the moment, the only way to get Sword Oath stacks is to do a full Royal Authority combo and you get 3 stacks of it. Each Atonement hits as hard as the final part of a RA combo (so the actual RA attack)

It also got a fix 2 years in the making in the form of the Enhanced Requiescat passive: when you are under the Requiescat buff, your spell casts are instant. THANK THE LORD!

And last, but certainly not least, it got Confiteor which is an AoE finisher to your Requiescat window

So... let’s talk about PLD. I listed everything that it got from Stormblood to Shadowbringers. While all of this is great, especially the Enhanced Requiescat passive, it also lost pretty heavily. Its personal mitigation feels kind of crappy. Sheltron is great, but unlike the other short cooldown tank cooldowns, it is tied to the Oath Gauge... something that is still tied to auto attacks. Even if it wasn’t tied to auto attacks, the only benefit that it has is that you can use 2 Sheltrons back to back and then you are stuck trying to get it back. Doesn’t help that blocking’s power has been nerfed into the ground, with the highest blocking power still mitigating only 20%. “Only 20%? That’s still a lot!” Yeah, but it just doesn’t feel great. Also, I don’t know who made this decision but I just wanna talk: WHO RENAMED SHIELD OATH TO IRON WILL? I JUST WANNA TALK I PROMISE *prepares to Fell Cleave whoever made that decision*

Anyway, lame jokes aside, overal I’d give PLD around an 9/10 as well with a small note: in its highest highs it is a solid 9.5/10, sometimes even going to a 10/10. In its lowest lows, it is still a 7/10.

Dark Knight (DRK): THE EDGE IS CALLING TONIGHT! DRK is back with a vengeance after what happened to it in SB. The black sheep no more, DRK took a page out of WAR’s book and decided that Delirium needed to be diet Inner Release. So, for the changes/additions to DRKs kit (warning: there is a lot):

firstly, it got Edge of Darkness/Shadow. It is an oGCD single target attack that gives the DRK 30 seconds of Darkside

Darkside is now a buff activated by Edge of Darkness/Shadow and Flood of Darkness/Shadow (which I’ll get to next) that increases the DRKs damage by 10%. It also doesn’t halt MP regeneration anymore, so that’s neat

Flood of Darkness/Shadow is a line AoE oGCD skill that gives the DRK 30 seconds of Darkside

Abyssal Drain is an oGCD skill now that heals the DRK a bit per enemy hit, so the more enemies hit the bigger the heal

Delirium is now a 10 second window where Bloodspiller and Quietus don’t cost any resource. Sound familiar? Yeah, it is basically WAR’s Inner Release

They also get a combo move off Unleash called Stalwart Soul, which gives 20 Blood Gauge and some MP back when combo-ed

Next they get Dark Missionary, an AoE buff that makes the DRK and everyone one arounds the DRK take 10% less magic damage

Last, but certainly not least, they get the coolest skill in the game: Living Shadow. The summon a dark shadow in the shape of our all to familiar DRK quest giver from levels 30 to 50, Fray. It does 7 attacks across the span of 20ish seconds, but a mix of AoE and single target attacks

Also Plunge gets 2 charges, matching it to PLD’s Intervene

Plus, Blood Weapon now no longer increases attack speed (or well, it decreased the GCD so you were attacking quicker)

HOT DAMN DRK! You got a lot of good stuff and I’d probably say that DRK had the biggest upswing out of all the tanks from Stormblood to Shadowbringers. Makes sense since DRK is the poster boy of this expansion. So if I had to rate DRK, I’d say a 8.5/10. The only thing I think is halting DRK is that it doesn’t get Stalwart Soul until 72 and that the Blackest Night is still its level 70 capstone, making synced stuff be kind of painful from time to time. Not as bad as PLD though, which in my opinion might as well be unplayable from levels 68 to 78 because of Requiescat not giving the instant casts yet :(

Gunbreaker (GNB): KABOOM! Squall Leonhart has arrived in XIV and he has come in the form of a tanking job. Funny, both of the popular FF mainline protagonists, Cloud and Squall, are referenced in tanking jobs. Squall more so in GNB than Cloud in DRK, but still. Oh boy, let’s start this. This is gonna be a while and I’ll do it in bullet points since this is an entirely new job instead of changes to an existing job:

GNB has its Solid Barrel combo, which gives a small heal and small shield equal to the heal on the 2nd hit of the combo and it gives 1 cartridge to the GNB on the last hit

Cartridges are used to power 3 abilities: Burst Strike, their version of Fell Cleave, Fated Circle (can you tell this job is inspired by Squall yet), their version of Decimate/Steel Cyclone, and their Gnashing Fang combo

The Gnashing Fang combo is a high powered combo of skills that is on a 30ish seconds cooldown (it goes lower with skill speed). You can use another skill, called Continuation, in between each of the hits of the combo. They are oGCDs that add more damage to the combo

No Mercy is their damage buff. For 20 seconds you get 20% more damage. Simple enough!

Demon Slice is their AoE combo starter, with Demon Slaughter being the skill that combos from it. It also gives a cartridge when properly combo-ed!

Danger Zone is an oGCD that does ST damage. Eventually it gets upgraded into Blasting Zone (CAN YOU TELL THAT THIS JOB IS INSPIRED BY SQUALL) and does more damage

Camouflage is a oGCD skill that gives the GNB 10% mitigation and increases your parry change by 50%

Bow Shock is similar to Circle of Scorn, an oGCD that does AoE damage and gives AoE a damage over time effect

Aurora is a heal over time skill that the GNB can use on themselves or a party member. Has the same eventual potency as Equilibrium from WAR

Superbolide is their invuln skill... with a twist. It gives the GNB 8 seconds of total invulnerability... but puts their HP to 1 first

Sonic Break is a GCD skill that applies a damage over time effect on a 60ish second recast (goes down with skill speed)

Rough Divide is their gap closer and it has 2 charges

Heart of Light is Dark Missionary. Exact same skill

Heart of Stone is an oGCD skill that gives the GNB or one of their party members 15% mitigation. It is on a very short cooldown

Last but not least, it gets Bloodfest (its animation is Squall’s Draw animation from FF8. So again, CAN YOU TELL THAT THIS JOB IS INSPIRED BY SQUALL). Bloodfest gives the GNB 2 cartridges

That... that was a lot, but that was expected since I was describing a completely new job. The next time a tank releases, if it does, I’ll have to do this again... oh boy. Anyway, Squa- I mean GNB is a very interesting tanking job. It has kind of taking DRK’s spot as the fastest tank. Makes sense, since a Gunblade is not nearly as big and heavy as a Greatsword. In reality, GNB is a very fast and fun tank. It is arguably the best designed tank at the moment, though I think something can be said of PLD (though that is strictly speaking on the offense side). Overal, I’d give GNB a 9/10 rating. “WHAT?! AS HIGH AS PLD?!” Ye. It is a really good and fun tank!

Overal: So, in the end, what do we have? Well, the short of it, we got 4 very fun tanks for their own reasons. Even the meh-est of the tanks, WAR, is in my opinion still quite fun to play. So I said I was going to talk about what my main is. Well... I’m still trying the tanks and see what I like the most, but I do still consider myself a PLD main. Kind of doesn’t help that Square gave me almost everything I needed to keep maining PLD. A gap closer, instant cast spells (only during Requiescat but still), a way to reduce the monotony of the 1-2-3 combos, a finisher on the Requiescat window. I’m... in love once more.

The only thing I don’t like about PLD at the moment is how it very much lost its impenetrable wall fantasy. Blocking is now only 20%, still hasn’t scaled and at this point I doubt it will. Sentinel is now the same as Shadow Wall, Vengeance and Nebula: 2 minutes cooldown and 30% mitigation. It feels very weird that the shield tank has the least personal mitigation out of the tanks, plus its utility abilities are... weird. Divine Veil needs to be proc’d via a healing spell and Passage of Arms needs to be actually aimed and either be done somewhat last second or be held, which then makes it a damage loss. Every other tank’s utilities are instantly applied. Also an issue is that the Oath Gauge still doesn’t have a reason to freaking exist. You don’t use it often enough and for enough skills to have it visible. The only reason why I still have it is because it feels weird to not have a job gauge on my HUD for only PLD. I can go on about this stuff for a while, but I still love PLD. I’ll go over a “things I want to see changed for the tanks in the next expansion” thing later. PLD will definitely be the biggest section of that. Anyway, these were my tank impressions for Shadowbringers. Overal, very good expansion for tanking c:

FEATURE: Which Word Would These 7 Anime Characters Play First In Wordle?

  If you’ve been perusing the internet over the past few weeks, you’ve probably seen people posting a bunch of randomly filled-in squares that have to do with something called Wordle. Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where you have to figure out a five-letter word through guessing other words and discerning which letters go in which position. Then you post your results on social media to gloat to your friends. Let’s see what opening words these various anime characters would use and maybe you’ll find a good word to use for yourself. I will give you all a pro tip though — anime is a pretty good opening word.

  Naruto Uzumaki (Naruto) - RAMEN

    There are a lot of eras of Naruto we could look at, but I like to imagine a younger Naruto getting into Wordle after probably hearing about it through Sakura and wanting to try and impress her. Considering who Naruto is, it’d be easy to think he’d go with something simplistic such as NINJA, but would probably get told not to use that since it features two repeating letters and that’s not going to help him in the long run. Instead, he goes with something else that’s near and dear to his heart, RAMEN. This, in all honesty, is a pretty decent starter word. You’ve got three commonly used consonants and two good vowels you can knock out right away to give you a good headstart in figuring out what the actual daily word is. Of course, there’s also the possibility that Naruto would just send out shadow clones as a way to try and see how other people were playing to cheat his way to victory.

  Rimuru Tempest (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) - MANGA

    If Rimuru brought Wordle to the masses of Tempest, it’d probably be a game they could all get into. There would be one problem however, and that’s that everyone would try to use the same opening word — SLIME — since they all love Rimuru so much. That might seem like an obvious word for Rimuru to use since they are a slime, but let’s take a look at something from Rimuru’s previous life that they were a fan of — MANGA. We’ve seen throughout the series that Rimuru has brought manga to various people, so it’d be a good word that fits them. Although it does have repeating letters in it so it’s not the best word to start out with, Rimuru also has an ability that could easily figure out every puzzle pretty instantaneously, so I don’t think that would matter too much. 

  Beatrice (Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World) - TOMES

    When you hang out in a library all day, you’re gonna become very acquainted with words, which would make Beatrice a pretty good player of Wordle. Plus, she’s got a lot of time to spend working on the daily puzzle without too many interruptions. I like to imagine she’d use an opening word such as TOMES because she’s surrounded by books all the time. Plus, it’s another really good word to start with since it uses a good assortment of commonly used vowels and consonants that should give her an advantage. Given her knowledge, she might not need too many hints to solve each puzzle.

  Izuku Midoriya (My Hero Academia) - MIGHT

    Sometimes, the answers to these are going to be fairly obvious given the character we’re talking about. Considering what we see from Izuku throughout My Hero Academia it’s pretty obvious who he’d immediately think of if he had to choose a five-letter word on the spot. Which makes me wonder, what would All Might think of Izuku using MIGHT as his opening word? It’s an interesting choice because it’s not necessarily the most obvious in terms of using commonly used letters, but there’s definitely going to be times where that GH combination is going to work wonders and give a huge clue into figuring out the daily word. So, while it might not be a go-to word for everyone, it’ll certainly serve Izuku well here and there.

  Jotaro Kujo (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) - OCHRE

    It’s hard not to imagine Jotaro reluctantly getting into Wordle, but once he finally does, he fully commits to it. Unlike Naruto earlier, let’s think of an older Jotaro here from Part 4 of JoJo onwards. Considering this is Jotaro as he’s now a marine biologist, he’s going to surprise people with his word choice. It’s not going to be something like PUNCH or trying to stretch out ORA into a five-letter space — he’s going to go with something he’s very familiar with now: sealife. Specifically, a type of starfish in the OCHRE species. It’s a similar kind of word to Izuku’s where you get some commonly used letters but are also relying on the CH portion of the word to double-up for you and give you those words that feature both of those letters prominently. However, I think the real question would be, how good will Jotaro be at Wordle? I think he’d be decent at it, but you’d certainly get quite a few days where he just tosses his phone and exhales “yare yare daze” under his breath. 

  Destiny (takt op.Destiny) - CAKES

    With how much her personality has to evolve over the course of takt op.Destiny to become more human, she might have the most trouble with anyone here with regards to Wordle. She’d certainly be pushed into it by Anna who’d want someone to compare scores against while they’re on their travels. The only problem is, Destiny keeps trying to input various desserts and sweets she likes as the answer, so she keeps starting with the word CAKES. She’ll eventually get one of the puzzles right, to the joy of Anna and potentially Takt as well, although he won’t outwardly show it. 

  Takemichi Hanagaki (Tokyo Revengers) - MIKEY

    Out of all the words Takemichi says in Tokyo Revengers, the one he probably says the most is Mikey’s name. This makes sense given what all they go through together and how often he’s calling out to him. When Takemichi returns from his excursions to the past and has maybe a smidge of downtime, he’d try out this Wordle game to see what all the fuss is about. With it, he comes up with the perfect opening word and one that he’d remember to use every day, MIKEY. It’s a decent word to use, and it also has a Y in there that will be a big help when you’ve got those sneaky words with Y in them. He’d be so excited with how he thinks this is going to be the way to win every time, only to discover when he puts it in, it’s not a word the game recognizes. Dejected, he’d have to come up with something that’d also work well as a word and be something he could remember easily, like TEARS or TIMES. Poor Takemichi.
