SUMMARISED STORY,

⤷ junho was born on november 15, 1997 to a seemingly normal family. thier parents were both elementary school teachers in the city, and their family lived a humble beginning. they were the second-oldest child, having an older brother and two younger sisters, and they were just a normal, happy family...

⤷ ( tw : familial death ) tragedy would strike when junho was eight years old, just a couple months after their youngest sister was born. an aeternal by the name ARCHANGEL ( flight via angel wings + minor light manipulation ) was having an intense fight with his nemesis across the city, and it was just unfortunate that the yang family's home was caught in the crossfire with junho's family inside while they were away at a friend's house that afternoon. everyone in the house was pronounced dead and junho was by themself.

⤷ it was a hectic couple days for poor ARCHANGEL, who had a squeaky clean image with zero civilian deaths since their enlistment into the aeternal task force decades earlier. public opinion really turned on him the moment video surveillance came out showing that the destruction of family's house could've been avoided twenty minutes earlier when his initial mission was completed instead of chasing after the villain. it was probably the first time he's ever acted so irrationally, and now he was reaping what he sowed.

⤷ the task force's pr team suggested that he should adopted the newly-orphaned junho to help save face. to be clear, ARCHANGEL had never wanted children because they only cared about their career. taking care of a child was never something he wanted to do, much less take care of a child he's never met before whose only knowledge of him was the fact that he's the reason they were now an orphan.

⤷ he still ends up adopted junho, mostly due to the pressure of the public after news outlets released articles of his alleged guilt, and that he wanted to adopt them as a way to make peace with what had happened.

⤷ ( tw : parental neglect ) they do not get along behind the scenes. junho is uncooperative when they aren't in front of cameras and the aeternal is not interested in the child at all. he leaves junho in the care of various nannies who either only gush about how lucky they were for being adopted by someone so handsome and rich, or were in it for the large sum of payment given for providing them with the necessities. junho hated them all.

⤷ junho's ability manifests suddenly when he's thinking about his family one night at the age of ten. he only had three blurry photos of them all, somehow ninety-nine percent preserved despite the ruins of his family's home that surrounded them. he wished he could see them again, so imagine his surprise when he could see his brother's reflection in the mirror as if he were alive!

⤷ but no, sadly it's only junho, and the shift only lasts a few seconds. he studies his reflection in the mirror for almost an hour, slightly changing his features to test the waters. he realises he could completely change his eye color to hide the gold streak that had appeared in them and decides that he can't tell those around him — especially ARCHANGEL — about his ability. if he's right, he feels ARCHANGEL will take use the revelation to his advantage, and junho did not want that under any circumstances.

⤷ it takes a while for them to learn how to keep their eyes changed for longer than a couple seconds at a time, and there are a couple times nannies have done a double-take when they turned towards junho suddenly. when they manifest their first minor ability, sleep inducement, they stop hiding the real colour of their eyes and reveal that as their primary ability at thirteen. it's nothing as grandiose as ARCHANGEL's powers, but it sure was unexpected! the aeternal promised he would personally train his "son" but we all know how that went... junho trained themself.

⤷ junho decides to live a "humble life" in spite of the reality that they're a new addition to the nepo baby club. they graduate high school, gets their bachelors for psychology, and more recently got their masters in psychology. their "dad" can't really be upset with the direction they've taken in life, but if only their ability was better suited for the life of an aeternal... right?

⤷ behind the scenes, junho was busy making connections to get themself acquainted with various villains across the city. their views very much align with them, and being well acquainted with aeternals through ARCHANGEL has made it easier for them to gain the fragile trust of those who required the information. they go by the alias 'ATLAS', for no reason other than the fact it sounds cool, but also what kind of villain ( if they could be really be called that... ) goes by their full name?

⤷ ( tw: violence ) four years ago, ARCHANGEL was on a mission and tasked to capture a small-time villain hiding out at an abandoned cabin. it turned out to be a trap, and he was ambushed by four other villains that had been off the grid for weeks. in the fight, although the villains had not killed him, instead they had incapacitated the aeternal by cutting off his wings and stealing them. they left him to die but thankfully more aeternals showed up to aid him, but the damage was done. although ARCHANGEL still had power, they couldn't find the will to continue being a hero. all according to junho's plan, of course... they wanted ARCHANGEL alive for a reason.

⤷ they started staying at silver line three years ago while they were interning at the wellness center, but they only became a sleep therapist within the last year with the use of his ability as well as making the right connections. sometimes they do work at han pharmaceuticals as well, both has themself but mostly shifted, typically morphed into someone that already works there.

⤷ after ARCHANGEL was decommissioned, junho momentarily believed that they have gotten their revenge. it didn't last very long because there were countless stories of civilians suffering physically, mentally and / or financially at the hands of aeternals without them facing too much repercussion for their actions. so junho continues working with any villains needing information, both new clients and their good ol' regulars alike!

PERSONALITY + EXTRA INFO,

⤷ junho uses any pronouns, mostly influenced by the fact that they're a shapeshifter, and thus have no preferences when it comes to pronouns. you'll see me interchange between they / them and he / him a lot but feel free to use any !

⤷ junho is two-faced. point blank. he is constantly wearing a mask unless he really trusts you and not many people have that privilege.

⤷ on the surface, he comes off as someone very friendly, easy to get along with and easy to speak to. he's confident in his skin without being vain, and he's known for helping others whenever they need someone, regardless if they know each other or not. he has a gentle personality that isn't quick to anger, and they're someone who seems to really care about the community around him. and you should never be friend with your therapist, but junho makes it so easy to forget that's an unspoken rule.

⤷ he is still all of these things with the villains that he works with ... but there are many, many layers to his identity. unless he's been working with someone for a long time or if they're likeminded individuals who want to see the aeternal task force fall off the face of the earth, he doesn't make any real friendships with someone. for someone who doesn't fit the aforementioned criteria, they need to have connections that junho can eventually connect himself to in order to be deemed useful to him. keeping those he barely cares about at an arms length is his norm.

⤷ as a villain, junho is someone who stays behind the scenes. he hires others or relies on others to get blood on their hands for him, and in return he gives them valuable information. he may know hand-to-hand combat but he is not versed in fighting with his abilities. his abilities are used as a defense mechanism and he's not too interested on using brute force to get what he wants and / or needs.

⤷ as expected, he's highly vengeful, and has a corrupt sense of justice. he could've simply had ARCHANGEL killed, but he realised that he would be taking the easy way out instead of showing remorse for his mistakes. maybe junho would've learned to forgive the man if more innocent civilians hadn't became collateral damage in more conflicts around the city when the aeternal was involved... but here we are.

⤷ worry not, junho is not completely heartless! he really does have a soft-spot for others who have been wronged by aeternals. he has been in their shoes, and regardless of what happened, he knows they deserve better than the reimbursement they were given. his stories harden his resolve and remind him that his cause his just... regardless of the methods.

⤷ not sure where else this would fit, but junho is secretly obsessed with their reflection. over the years with the use of their ability, shapeshifting has always made them feel like they have a tendency to forget what certain features of their own are actually theirs or if they've made a subtle change that they hadn't noticed until now. sometimes they doubt if their face is even their natural face, and they're trying to convince themself that it doesn't matter. they're a shapeshifter after all, their appearance changes at their own will anyway.

⤷ not sure where to place this either but junho is a fish parent ! they have 4 female bettas, their daughters, no real names and instead called by the color they are lol. they also have two males in separate tanks. they really like fish and often go to like the nearest pet store to contemplate buying another betta. they even have a tattoo dedicated to their first betta ( and its their only tattoo as well, they're a firm believer that their own tattoos should be meaningful ).

fellow villains or morally grey muses for them to work with or befriend pls ...... could be someone newer to their circle or someone they have been acquainted with for a long time.

patients at the wellness center ... junho can and will help your muses fall asleep if they're having trouble. they can either come to the center themselves or his apartment is always open for anyone to come take a nap. just one tap to the wrist and he can get most ppl to sleep!

you shouldn't be friends with your therapists but this is not the real world so it should be ok if muses are "friends" with him!! it's probably better if they're not his patients but yk whatever snfjkdsnfjs we'll work out the kinks when we get there,,

sometimes they go to daemon to meet clients for information while shifted, sometimes they go to bet on fighters or sometimes they go simply for a drink. they're kinda the wrong person to trust with private information or drunken confessions but what better place to accidentally gain info than at a place were ppl get drunk......

he has resident complaints against him for dreamwalking. it's somewhat of a newer ability to him and he can control it maybe 70% of the time. sometimes he intends to go to a certain person's dreams and ends up completely different... either way it's considered an invasion of privacy... so... he's sorry? ( would be soooo down to have threads inside someone's dreams! )

they're usually very meticulous of shapeshifting in their apartment or in hidden alleys or public restrooms where no one would see them, but they're not perfect and mistakes are made. they can play it off as a recently developed minor ability but maybe they're suspicious of how natural their shift is... who is the real junho, the person they see leave their apartment or the person they just shifted into?

his "regular" social circle... like people who genuinely thinks they're a group of besties... and maybe somewhere deep deep deep deep down he also considers them friends. it's just a shame that he can't really trust them with his true personality but he cares for them more than he cares for most people he keeps at arms length for sure!

exes, fwbs, one night stands whatever... all i'll say is that junho can figuratively ( and literally... but they don't know that ) become whatever someone wants out of a partner, just know that if they were in a committed relationship at any point in time, junho was most likely using them due to any connections they may have anjfnhjsfb

sarang's backstory describes her dealing with a condition that is reminiscent of psychosis in addition to experiencing psychotic episodes, caused by stress built-up over time and thus affecting the control of her illusion manipulation. when the aforementioned topics come up in their backstory i will give a brief warning!

HER STORY,

⤷ she is the daugter of aeternals MAGICIAN ( illusionary magic ) and MIRAGE ( mirage inducement ), and she was born july 10, 2000, which was roughly seven months after her parents famously announced their secret marriage and the fact that her mom was even pregnant. they're both known as super private individuals who did not thrive in the public eye so just imagine the collective surprise !!!

⤷ even after sarang is born, she's kept out of the public eye completely. the public expected them to make that choice. it was mostly due to the fact that her parents wanted to wait to see when or if her own power would manifest. they wanted to protect their one and only child as best they could, so if she ended up not being a metahuman they just planned on keeping her identity a secret for as long as they lived.

⤷ luckily for them, sarang manifested her power at eight years old. they kept her a secret for another year and taught her how to control her ability at a very basic level just so that they can put rumors of her not being real to rest !!! they just wanted her to have basic defense skills just in case as they are active aeternals and no-doubt have enemies lurking in different places... they just wanted her to be a little prepared.

⤷ as she grew up, her parents continued to train her privately. they constantly pushed her past her limits in the guise of preparing her for her future as an aeternal. since her powers manifested, her parents knew they wanted her to follow their footsteps. it's a generally unexpected ambition of theirs given their personalities ... tbh sarang doesn't know what their problem is either !

⤷ not to toot her own horn but this girl is cracked with her ability. it's clear that the years spent training difficultly have paid off, bc many consider her to be skilled beyond her years. when she enrolls in the training academy, she confidently assumes she'll graduate with flying colors, and to everyone who asks her parents would say the same. so she's not sure why they constantly feel the need to continue pressuring her to go above and beyond.

⤷ ( tw: psychosis )the aftereffects of their parental guidance become apparent near the end of the semester during her second-last year as a trainee. she first thinks she's being sabotaged affected by another student's ability, perhaps a victim of sabotage, but this theory goes out the window when she realises she's still experiencing weird things outside of classes. why does she keep walking into walls when she clearly saw a door there a second ago? why is her reflection doing something different than her in the mirror? she's embarrassed and scared, and chooses not to tell anyone.

⤷ ( tw: psychotic episode ) it all comes to a head when during a random simulation training session. her concentration is nowhere to be found when it seems like there's so much happening at once !!! it takes longer to get her to snap out of whatever nightmare she might be experiencing, and luckily for her the only person who witnessed this breakdown was the teacher overseeing said session.

⤷ she hastily and impulsively drops out of the academy. it comes as an unexpected and sudden decision but she has been experiencing these abnormalities for too long that eventually she found that she cannot trust herself to become a superhero in the state that she's in. her parents try to save-face by lying to the public and claiming it's only a hiatus to focus on her health and recovery after a minor accident. she can't tell them what she's dealing with out of embarrassment despite their continuous calls to go back. she isn't ready and doesn't think she will ever be !!

⤷ the second chance collective was not unfamiliar, she just didn't think she'd ever step through its doors. the staff welcome her with a warmth she isn't used to, and they are patient with her despite her reluctance to open up at all. they keep the secret of her residency a secret and she is just thankful she feels like she can breathe for once — even if she doesn't know what to do for now. she takes blockers on days she feels particular unwell, but she is afraid of potential overuse so she still has outbursts where she can't control anything.

PERSONALITY,

⤷ prior to her condition worsening, she was known to be very unlike her parents. she loved being around people and enjoyed familiarising herself with those she didn't recognise. she never hated the idea of attention being on her and always tried to be a beacon of warmth to those around her who wanted someone to look to for a friend.

⤷ a lot of these traits still remain true, but there is a little bit of reserve. she really feels a lot of fear deep down as she still doesn't fully trust herself to tell what's real and what isn't. pretending like everything is fine, just like how she always did, makes her feel normal so she's trying to make it seem like nothing has changed.

⤷ i feel like because she's trying so hard to find that normality in her life, she could definitely come off as a bit insincere !! it's not her intention to seem that way, because she is genuinely looking for lifelong connections !!!! she was just so accustomed to feeling like she could make friends naturally that now she feels out of her element ... plus she feels like she has no one on her side ( she cut them out herself out of embarrassment !! ) so she wants to cling onto anyone willing to let her !!!!!

⤷ one of the ways she's trying to feel like she used to is by adopting a cat ... she never had a cat before but she's a natural caretaker and when she dropped out 2 months ago, she was on somewhat of an impulsive streak and officially adopted the stray cat she's been feeding outside her dorm since she became a trainee. she just didn't think he would be so naughty, but she assumes leo is too accustomed to the life of a stray to just suddenly become an indoor cat.

⤷ please don't bring up her parents or what happened during the "incident" or ask when she will be going back to the academy ... she won't say anything and she would like to move on !!! ( as the daughter of the masters of misdirection best believe she will find a way to get this conversation to go elsewhere !!! )

she's a caretaker and it's ok to admit that sometimes it's a bad thing ! she can be overbearing but who else is going to take care of this person if not her !!!

for someone who was this close to become a superhero herself, she has gotten into trouble yet again. it's usually self-inflicted but this time it's not and she needs a little bit of help since she's not going to use her own abilities to get out of this ( they can be angry with her about it after if they know her ability, or take the nickname of her saviour in stride if they don't )

she doesn't consider herself to be lucky in the department of love due to a number of reasons but still goes on blind dates set up by someone she knows. it's something people her age do at least ... which is one way to feel normal?

she knows that her cat is a bit of a wildcard and incredibly independent but she has a heart attack every time he disappears for more than a couple hours. imagine the betrayal she feels when she's in the middle of putting up lost posters and leo walks out of their apartment ...

she really hates the idea of going to therapy sessions and dislikes talking about her problems but she decided to attend a group session in case it would help change her mind. seeing a familiar face doesn't ease her nerves but she forgot to bring blockers to prevent her stress from making her act out.

it's very very very hard to get on her bad side, mostly bc she tries too hard to see the good in people. maybe it was a misunderstanding that was never cleared up but she really cannot be in the same room as them ... how will they interact when they're stuck on the elevator together ...

Capcom for RE4R decided to create their own unique world-building instead of copying & pasting from cultural artifacts which had no presence in Spain the time period the old cult took place. This is why you will find MANY elements from Japan, the continent of Asia, as well as India. Although Los Iluminados may largely present itself as an Abrahamic sect to the uninformed, many of their core ideologies & practices actually have roots within ( orthodox ) Hinduism, Shingon Buddhism, Shintoism & Pre-Judaism Greek / Roman paganism, which does include human sacrifice. I will begin this analysis VERY CLEARLY that they do not believe in the Abrahamic God / YHWH, & the fandom at large is extremely misinformed about the cultural elements present within the game, including REWIKI.

This image is drawn from scratch. It is completely fictional, & you can be certain that the developers didn't take from someone else's photos. Nevertheless, any artist has references, & you cannot do visual storytelling without universal motifs, because drawings are a type of language, so they have their own kind of words. & this line of thought leads us to the question of who this mysterious figure is. Who is this weird monk-looking figure?

Well, this imagery is based on the motifs of South Asia & Hinduism in particular. You see, his position & the "sun" in place of his head have a common denominator : They're associated with the lotus. If the pose is known to many ( especially for those who practice yoga ) & needs no introduction, the head can be confusing. & here I will make a small digression : I can see how it reminds someone of René Magritte & Drew Struzan's masterpieces :

However, these arts have no actual connection with our monk. They do have a common trait, but it's very superficial & goes down to hiding identity with light. The authors' intentions are different, nonetheless : Magritte explored the paradox through how light, which helps us see in the dark, prevents us from seeing a face in a dark room, & Struzan presented an image of an alien, often associated with bright artificial light, which can have the shape of a human. In contrast, the monk from RE:4 has a Hindu motif, for his head is a version of the golden chakra ( "wheel" or "circle" ), the Sahasrara ( the "thousand-petalled lotus" ), which represents unity with the divine, where the body is a channel of godly energy. & symbolically, the golden hands resemble the manus dei motif from the early Middle Ages, which was designed by Christians to represent YHWH's intervention without depicting his body, since it was unacceptable to depict god as a full human figure. However, it looks like the deity from the game has multiple hands, which again reminds us of Hinduism :

In other words, if we are trying to draw a conclusion, the monk is an avatar of God worshipped by medieval monks. You may ask what all this has to do with Los Iluminados, except for the praying hands, which are also depicted on the statues of Osmund's predecessors, & human sacrifices. & I will answer that the lotus pose & chakra have another universal denominator : they represent enlightenment, & this is exactly what the name "Los Iluminados" refers to. This conclusion could have been the end of the story if Leon hadn't discovered a genuine Sokushinbutsu 即身仏 in the castle earlier, the practice of Buddhist monks observing asceticism to the point of death & entering mummification while alive. In fact, there is an entire cellar full of these mummies, so this is a standard practice of the cult. The practice of asceticism to the point of death whilst in lotus is not seen in any Abrahamic religion, nor has any association to European Abrahamic faith :

It looks familiar, doesn't it? The significant difference is that we have a parasite instead of a chakra, but the material / textures of this asset are still labeled as "god". This bit leads us to the faith that Lord Saddler preaches : he calls each plaga a "Holy Body," which in any modern Christian denomination means the body of Jesus Christ, the incarnation of YHWH. BUT in the context of this game, as well as paganism / Buddhism which predated Christianity, Los Iluminados believes that these parasites / 'Holy Body' are remnants of god that were discovered by Adam.

What might be interesting about this god is that Lord Saddler tells Leon during the final battle that he has made the decision to sacrifice his body & consciousness to god so that he—this god—would be reborn, & the final form of the character is labeled as a "hashira" in the game folders. Hashira, meaning "pillar", in Shinto is a unit of god, represented by a tree, which houses a kami. This type of tree is a spiritual symbol which represents the connection / pillar between heaven & earth. Osmund, figuratively & physically, became a "human pillar" / Hitobashira, which was a form of sacrifice within Japan well until the 16th Century, which was regarded as becoming wholly connected to the god(s) & providing divine protection.

Pillars not only apply to buildings within Shinto, they are also applicable to trees, which are regarded as worshipping sites. This practice of sacrifice & worship of divine trees, again, is not seen in Abrahamic religion. If you observe the regular trees in Valdelobos & The Church shrine, you can see that their depiction of a pillar is also knotted with rope, which is seen in Shinto as Shimenawa. Capcom, naturally, took creative liberty so that it is unique :

More on the nose, Los Iluminados associates human / animal hands & limbs with the branches of god in their very holy book. So becoming to the likeness of a type of spiritual tree found within Shingon Buddhism / Shintoism is something sought by the zealotry.

An addition, namely a comparison that can reinforce the parallel between the monk & Lord Saddler. Throughout the game, Leon finds the holy book of Los Iluminados, & one of them is open on a page with a curious miniature. We can see Osmund's representation, which corresponds to Ramon's subjective vision of this character, that is, as a source of light & enlightenment. This characterization is emphasized by the sun's image as a halo, as well as the gesture of the right hand in the form of the so-called "palm of the righteous", which is a symbol of sincerity & trust. This "unknown" man is a saint, & the fact that he is faceless, since the insignia of Los Iluminados replaces his face, illustrates that he is an agent of the divine will, god's speaker.

There are other tidbits I have mentioned prior, such as High Priests in Buddhism wearing purple ( as Osmund does ), Osmund wearing a coin-belt which is strictly attributed to Asia / India, as well as his robes being stitched with the infinity knot, which represents their Hindu / Buddhist ideology of rebirth / living throughout eternity ( also found in Asia / India ). I could dive into more of their cultural / religious practices & how it compares to Hindu Aghori. But, as a most stark example, every monk in Los Iluminados wears Sarashi 晒し as Fundoshi ふんどし/褌) / breast-binding, which was traditional in Japan prior WWII. This style of clothing & wearing cloth bandages was certainly not the norm within Spain. Continuing, their use of drapery is also seen in Japanese Buddhist sects, going by a variety of different terminology :

                                   How awful of him to not be able to see the forest for the trees in this instance because Aldebaran was right. They were more than just fighting. They weren't mindless meatsacks who were bred just to fight. They were worth more than that. Maybe....in a way, that was the problem; that's what makes everything harder. The hug was not satisfying. He tensed in it. Blackened bangs shielded his face while his eyes were downcast. ❛ Forgive me if I am not as jubilant as you are. ❜ He did not pull away mind you. Even in his upset, Shiryu was still polite. ❛ As much I would like to be, my...present is plagued with these thoughts. My feelings. MY SINS. ❜

Aldebaran quietly listened to Shiryu's words, and by the end of it his initial response came in the form of a deep sigh. His gaze remained on him the entire time, paying close attention to other signs coming from him.

They have all been wrangled into a dispute between deities that date, as long as the mythological time. Everyone has experienced their own fair share of disgraces, since a far too young age. The Taurus saint has merely been around for a tad longer, than the other that stood in front of him.

Eventually, he broke his silence. "Such is the life's duty of a saint. It isn't something" He maintained the calm tone of voice. "It's a burden we have attached to ourselves, but it is something you shouldn't try carrying on your own." There was a pause, before he proceeded to place a hand over Shiryu's shoulder, in a reassuring manner.

"But our lives cannot be reduced to just battles. That's the last thing Athena-- Saori, would wish to happen to us. Shiryu, you should learn to live in the present. The future will come, it's inevitable, we'll be ready for it." He followed it up, by pulling the younger boy into a firm and playful hug. "Besides, it isn't all a complete loss and doom. After all, Kiki will become the next Aries saint very soon. And you still have a long life ahead of you, Shiryu.
