Backstory:

Sakura Spirit is the first installment in an upsettingly long series of anime-tiddy-girl visual novels developed by Winged Cloud, a British indie company that only makes these kinds of games, and published/translated by Sekai Project, which is just a publisher, I have nothing rude to say about them. The story is...basic anime-boy-protagonist meets a bunch of girls, in this story in the form of forest/animal spirits that inhabit an alternate dimension he’s been transported to for...reasons? In this Let’s Play, we’ll be guided by the Game Grumps, our lovely Arin and Dan, and RubberRoss (aka Ross O’Donovan) in an installment of Steam Train, the formerly computer game focused show that aired on the GameGrumps YouTube channel. Let’s watch as they make high pitched noises that vaguely resemble women’s voices as they behold the power of anime bonghongaroos.

Highlights of the Let’s Play:

If you think that Arin, Dan, and Ross doing funny voices is quality entertainment, WELCOME TO YOUR VALHALLA because that’s literally 90% of what makes this Let’s Play any sort of fun or enjoyable. The text has its moments, especially for those that like the prototypical moe-anime/cute dating sim dialogue meant to make even the strongest of gamers go doki-doki panic in their doki-doki pants. Plus, lots of boobies on the screen. If you like looking at a Let’s Play that also serves as softcore ecchi, this is it. Also, it’s classic Steam Train. This is one of their most popular series and it includes Arin, Danny and Ross, who’s been greatly removed from GG programming outside of the Mario Maker franchise. So, if you’re looking for nostalgia, this is a hot ticket, as well.

Lowlights of the Let’s Play: 

I fucking hate these fucking voices. I remember being in my freshman year of college and having people tell me they loved the voices, it made the series for them, and that’s all fun and good, but how can you defend, or even convince me, that over 5 hours of this shit is enjoyable. It’s easy to surmise that a big part of the reason the series spanned 28 episodes and warranted a second taping was the fact they could put up these ridiculous thumbnails. I have never found that a VN series could be good if the source material is kind of garbage. It deeply affects how the commentary can connect to the story and not only is the story bad in this VN, but it’s laden with spelling errors and garbagey ecchi garbage. Objectively, a rough Let’s Play.

Thoughts on the Dream Daddy Discourse

As a achillean trans man I’m honestly appalled at some of yalls behavior towards DDADS. Literally so many people are complaining that “it’s endorsed by game grumps so yall shouldn’t like it and that its (homo/trans)phobic”.

1. The game grumps aren’t transphobic/homophobic, Jon Jafari is. Arin makes jokes calm down, people are allowed to be a little gay with their friends for a laugh without being actually gay.

2. A gay character is allowed to be a villain/shitty character. Just because Joseph’s gay doesn’t mean he needs to automatically be redeemed, leave his wife for player character etc. All dating sims have a “bad” route/character. Joseph just happen to be this games baddie.

3. How many dating sims can you play as any sexuality, either cis or trans, with an adopted/biological daughter of colour????

Basically just embrace this game for what it is, an unfetishised game about a dad loving other men, made for the lgbt/saga community. If talk got a problem with Joseph, don’t bloody romance him k

also i did finally finish all the routes in dream daddy, i was considering doing the bad ends but i just can’t bring myself to be mean in games, plus it doesn’t seem like there’s a need to to 100% the game. and since the Discourse is on the mind i wanna like...talk about the shit i saw for the dads

it perplexed me that robert, a vaguely spanish or mexican man (or at least that’s how i saw him, val reminded me of my cousin so that’s mainly why i thought that), was the “bad dad.” like don’t get me wrong i loved robert but idk. the alcoholic bad dad being vaguely hispanic was kind of odd. also a nitpick but i do NOT think dan should’ve voiced him. dan’s voice isn’t gruff enough for robert.

as funny as i thought the line was even tho now idr what the fuck it was (it came out of fucking nowhere and from a character like hugo that was super funny to me), in hugo’s route when he talks to his student at the wrestling thing, calling him a bitch isn’t GOOD. also his voice wasn’t bad but it was certainly a different quality from everyone else’s and that kinda put me off

and josephs’ route wasn’t even as bad as tumblr made it out to be but yeah the whole. cheating on his wife thing, staying wiht her despite everything (it’s very likely it’s because they have young children though since divorce can be tricky wiht children), and idk that weird boat sex was kinda. odd i guess? i super think they should’ve split bc they’re both super bad for each other. i still don’t mind the idea of the cult ending though, although it’s kinda pushing limits with the religious/demonic thing, it’s definitely not the first time i’ve seen it. it’s a neat concept to me

i don’t wanna critique it through the lense of it’s game grumps mainly bc from what i know, THE actual game grumps only voiced in it and the game grumps office was used to produce the game. i did NOT read the credits i might be wrong.

Me, the person that spent the last years at college studying and researching evaluation conditioning in the media and how it affects people's feelings towards different races irl: Even though media is getting better, folks are still falling into harmful tropes that only harm the message they are trying to get across and it helping.

I love Akande in overwatch but he is still a hulking black villain and that only reinforces the black hulking stereotype. Evaluative condition g is quick and instant and on a subconscious level for the most part so when folks look at him, they make connections with the racist stereotype of a big black man even if his character is far from it.

Dream Daddy has trans representation but has had their name tacked on to transphobic gamers and regardless of their involvement, that association is there. Gay men will be played as a joke because viewers of these gamers will be primed to think of gay men as a joke and not nuisanced people.

VLD relies so heavily on character tropes that genuine moments of character growth are lost because viewers are only going to see them through those tropes. Example- Characters like Hunk have moments where he shines through as an individual in the show are lost because the viewers have already been told multiple times that he's a fat food guy coward and because this trope is old and connections are strong in people's head that this trope is easily recognizable, moments where he's brave, math clever and just kind are overshadowed even if those moments are even with his food moments.

Steven Universe is another show that I had a lot of hope for but ultimately i had to step back from entirely because they constantly did nothing about their anti black biases and continued to demonize or other black coded characters within the show. Black woman characters being mules for the feelings of other characters, even when they were given moments to deal with those problems were turned to moments to lift up another character in the end (When Pearl used Garnet to fuse to feel powerful but only ended up being a character development moment for Pearl when that story arch should have centered around Garnet carrying the burden of the team). The creators have refused to do better with the POC coded gems or POC characters in the town and have mostly focused on white coded or thin characters. This is an example of people trying to be progressive so much so that they don't stop to check themselves or allow themselves to be criticized which is a shame. It's hard to see the progress in media when half the time it's one step forward two steps back.

Also me, but an optimistic person who just wants to have a good time and have faith in folks: I still enjoy the characters of Overwatch and other actually diverse big name pieces of media and even with its flaws it's a step in the right direction. The flaws will help them learn and if it doesn't, the spite will fuel other people to do better with their own IPs. I've seen plenty of folk get on their grind from bad media just as much as good media. And within the full context of the story, Akande is more than just a big black man and if fans and folks don't see the humanity in him, that's their problem. It is the job of the creators to do what they can to not promote harmful stereotypes but if fans can not see humanity in black characters than there is little that can be done.

Example- Lució is a good man, a musician and a hero to his people but people either Demonize his character by saying his a criminal for stealing from an oppressive force or dehumanizing him because he's one of the shortest characters on canon and because they don't see him as a "threatening" black man, they find ways to make him even less threatening, almost infant like as a counter stereotype which is just as harmful to black people.

I will bring up Dream Daddy again because other than small moments that are iffy, the game is actually very tame and very well made and not the fetish fuel that the fans have made it out to be. Most of the dates are just friends hanging out and only on the third date do you lock in a romantic interaction. Some of those last dates don't even become romantic until the last minute. Even Joseph's story which doesn't have a "good ending" is balanced for in the fact that not every gay has to have a good end when the majority of them in the story do. Only positive stuff doesn't make people see gay men as complex human people and the idea that just because it's a dating sim, huh can't always get what you want is nice and treats him like a human man with his own issues and not just fan fuel. I can see this being a stepping stone for folks to take the dating sim genre more seriously because both them and visual novels are easier to program and create than fps,third person games, or side scroller and so more indie folks can create bigger and better representation without being tacked on to the Game Grumps.

VLD has been an odd show from the jump and has done a lot better than previous versions of the show. It's far more diverse and the stereotypes are annoying but not as bad as they were in the past. I prefer to watch the show outside of the fandom and I don't interact with the fans because again, it becomes a situation where the fans own biases have soiled the entire experience and made the show something that it isn't. It could be better but nothing is perfect and I'll critique it because that's my job as a viewer but I'm still proud of the work it's done so far even if it's not super good all the time.

Also also me, an exhausted person: Just do better. Both shows and fans. People make these shows and pieces of media and people aren't perfect. It's both the job of the creator to do better and to apologize when implicit biases, which are very hard to change unless you actively go out of the way to fix them and recondition yourself, are present in characters or they just fuck up on something.

But it's also the job of the fans to educate themselves on what's right and how to interact with folk. This isn't a reasonably, be nice thing. It's a, maybe don't send really weird messages to folks about your ship unless the creator has made it know that they like to engage in that talk. Even if you are angry, actually say what's wrong with sources instead of working off hear-say. If you don't know what's wrong with a show, ask and do your own research or only form your opinions from folks that actually did the research and not a random post with literally no sources but lots of outrage. Also accept that sometimes your opinion on stuff is wrong. Cis women who only interact with a show for the gay ships are fundamentally wrong?? And annoying and you hounding a creators for gay content is actually very gross when you can support shows when canon can characters.

BUT as fans you do have a right to critique a show for stuff going on and creators have to have thicker skin when it comes to critique. They have every choice to listen to it or ignore it but fans have every right to critique the media. It's how things change. Again, a point back to Steven Universe. Both with the fans and the creators didn't want anything bad said about the show. Just because it was progressive for one group, doesn't mean it's progressive for other folk.

There were good moments that children and adults needed to hear but nothing is perfect and if a show can't be critiqued nothing will get better and the deeper in your craw you get about a problem, folks tend to double down on them (I have a theory that racist/sexist/ist thoughts and actions tend to get worst when you tell folks to stop because they can be learned through conditioning and so go through a thing called an extinction burst ((an extinction burst is when you try and stop a trained behavior by not reinforcing it any longer the thing doing the behavior does it a lot more out of frustration because they aren't frying their treat anymore)) so they do racist shit more because they aren't getting rewarded for their behavior) the worst you'll get.

The rise of social media and creators wanting to connect with the fans have created a situation where folks have easy access to one another and there is a lack or respect for folks space. This was a problem with Bryke and members of the ATLA crew entering in spaces meant for the fans and being upset with how overwhelming the close interactions were and got defensive about critique of any kind. This is a problem with folks on the VLD fandom holding pieces of media hostage to get what they want, ignoring the real world consequences of those actions. The closeness allows for direct responses with problems but also the same way texts are, people expect and answer immediately when people behind contracts and are representing their content and everyone who's worked on it has to put the message out fast but same time it has to follow rules probably set out by their company. Both sides just need to do better.

I read somewhere that the whole Dream-Daddy Cult ending thing was from a cut planned Halloween DLC thing, and isn't canon.

That may be! I don’t doubt it, as I know ppl found it via data mining, but it’s a bit weird to like…throw it in there in the first place? It was left in there, and I think the only reason they did it was possibly bc they knew ppl were gonna b confused as to why they couldn’t like get the good ending with Joseph, so hey heres this confusing nugget we left in to wet your appetite.

But it’s less about it being canon or not and more just that it was upsetting to see in a game that was marketed as a goofy, nice dating sim that was p much geared towards being lgbt friendly. And there are some cool things about the game from what I heard. I haven’t played it bc I wasn’t rly planning on it, but for those who may have gotten it they were legit happy about like, playing a trans dad for example! But that doesn’t mean u cant be skeptical about it given the origins of it. Also keep in mind that some people aren’t entirely comfortable with that religious aspect of ‘the self-hating gay priest’ or ‘literal gay demon’ for reasons.

If you just think about the dialogue that was mined up alone he literally says ‘we did the dirty, now I have to kill you’ , come at you with a knife, and also that he’s keeping everyone in the town single to feed of their sexual energy. It just feels inappropriate, you feel? If it were some weird hentai/ero game I wouldn’t be so surprised but it wasn’t marketed that way. Even in the game it’s implied he and Robert had a thing (they have the same weird cult tat) and when u look thru that lens it’s…really not so great now.

Hell even if it had been like…you dating this dad and finding out his church worships Cthulhu or something, but that otherwise nothing else was weird about it, I’d be fine with that, there is nothing wrong with Joseph specifically being religious

Again, It’s entirely possible that it was scrapped and it may not be a huge deal to some, but others may be uncomfortable with it. And even if its not canon, if they DO plan on doing Halloween DLC this may not like. Be the way they wanna go, so better people voice their concerns now. And I haven’t played the game so I’m not here to rant abt it like those whose have actually played but from the screens I saw and just hearing about Joseph’s normal game routes, it just made me uncomfortable. You can take it w a grain of salt if it really was scrapped but I’d rather just not mess with it if all

How about no because those two games aren’t remotely comparable. 

Dream Daddy is a SAFE FOR WORK title that is about dating and being a father. It also has a diverse cast of characters and allows the player character to be trans.

Coming Out On Top is literally smut. And there’s nothing wrong with this but its A) not safe to stream, whatsoever. and B) not a good option for anyone who wants a straightforward dating sim that isn’t basically porn.

Not only that but COoT only has *ONE* Nonwhite romance option. Not to mention that the singular non-white Romance Option is LITERALLY played off as being a “weird relative” of your roommate’s and he’s a complete and total asshole to your character from the moment you meet. He has the most difficult route in the game to obtain and finish, outside of Ian, your close friend.

All of the other non-white characters are relegated to one night stands you can hook up with via the game’s “dating app”. There’s no romance routes here - simply conversation choices that lead to sex.

(Also the writing in Coming Out on Top is bad. Like, it’s really really REALLY bad.)

it has its issues and i literally vehemently hate that game grumps are in it but people have actually like written complete misinformation like it was written by a straight fujoshi woman or even the grumps themselves when like…. the writers are a bisexual man and self-identified queer woman, it was nowhere near written to be fetishistic and its really getting annoying to hear people just say such misinformation without doing so much as to look at the devs behind it
