One Last #IndyCar Race for 2017
First things first – huge congratulations to Josef Newgarden on him becoming the newest IndyCar champion! Josef is a special guy to us, he was on Sarah Fisher Racing (whom, with Pippa Mann, Simona De Silvestra, Janet Guthrie and Lyn St. James, is our patron saints) then Ed Carpenter Racing (1) before he stepped onto Team Penske this year and dominated the season. You can see the influences of each and every team he’s been on and drivers he’s raced with, and it’s what has made him a great versatile driver. Plus he was on the Mazda Road to Indy (that’s how you should say, not you participated in, but that you were “on” the Road…it sounds much more poetic). This is the champion the series needed this year. Younger driver who went through the ladder series. This year they had the theme “Next” and now we’ve got the young champion. And next year we have the new aero kit. It’s a great transitional time for the series and it can only get better (2). Plus, let us take a minute as fellow-Americans to start a “U.S.A.” chant! (3)
Tumblr media
After talking about the Aero kits, just ready to jump right into 2018 Season, but that’ll be next time…or maybe in some months. Today, let’s take a minute to look back at the 2017 season. First thing that stands out is the lack of very bad wrecks. Sure, the Indy 500 this year was rough, and the Texas race was a Shit Show…but except for Bourdais the drivers were up the next day. And Bourdais by the way, wins the perseverance award, coming back after that wreck to drive the last three races…hats off.
Bourdais features in Molly’s favorite moment of 2017(4) – the Indy 500 Qualifying. Bourdais was running a qualifying run that would have secured the pole easily, then unfortunately had that massive crash (that moment where the entire track fell silent is a strong memory). Then Alexander Rossi runs next, without fear(5), crushes the record. Then Ed Carpenter said “look here junior” and smashes that record. Finally, Scott effin Dixon steps up and goes “Daddy’s Home” crushes that record…AGAIN. That was the speed show everyone was waiting for with qualifications.
Abby's moment also involves a magical track weekend - the weekend we went to Mid-Ohio for the Indy Honda 400 at Mid Ohio (or something like that). It was our first road-trip for IndyCar, and our first road course...on the road. We had some things we wanted to do, but we left a lot of it up to the flow of the weekend, and it was simply amazing. We met amazing people. We had some amazing experiances. We enjoyed amazing races. If you want, our facebook photo album sums up the weekend (and also has a picture that falls into both Molly and Abby's #2 moment). (6)
Finally, we would be remiss if we didn’t take a minute to just bask in the awesomeness that is the IndyCar fan community. It’s unlike any other sport. There is loyalty to a driver, there is loyalty to a team, hell there’s even loyalty to a track (the IMS is the best there ever is – fight us!)…but at the end of the day everyone’s gathered around a television watching the race, or chatting in the stands about drivers, and it’s the best.
Cheers to 2017, and we cannot wait for 2018.
Tumblr media
(1) We just don’t have time but we are upset with Ed moving ECR out from Main Street on Speedway
(2) There are rumors that Verizon is leaving and Molly legitimately switched her phone over to Verizon because of the bonuses…
(3) Stop…this isn’t some jingoistic moment on our part, just a proud American moment, I think it’s well documented how much we love drivers like Pagenaud (Fra), Power (Aus), Dixon (NZ), and Hinchcliffe (Can)
(4) She’s most thankful that no Orders of Protection or Cease or Desist motions were filed
