My favorite thing about the Moomin universe, specifically in the 90s anime English dub adaptation is that most characters have these whimsical names like "Snufkin" or "The Snork" or "The Mymble" and then there's just this guy named "Samuel Fredrikson" who happens to be good buddies with this universe's equivalent to god.

...Is what I WOULD HAVE SAID if I hadn't just looked him up to fact check myself and double check spelling and found out his BOSS, the KING of the island he lives on is called DADDY JONES

If you don't mind me asking? Can you elaborate more on the problematic aspect of Mumrik please?

Don't take too much of my word for it because this isn't very researched and this is more of a stream of consciousness than anything but fanon "Mumriks" (Joxter and Snufkin), as I've seen here and there, fall dangerously close to antisemitic caricatures and Romani stereotypes.

For one thing, Joxter and Snufkin's personalities being equated leads to a mash of their negative traits, and their negative traits being laziness, deceitfulness, uncleanliness and tendency for thievery/utter disregard for the law to the point of amorality or indecency applied to both with either "natural explanations" (saying that's just an Inherent Part Of Their Species) or dubious motivations is deeply entrenched in stereotypes of the Roma throughout Europe.

The fandom tends to mystify Joxter and Snufkin alot on very shaky ground, with forebodings (gut feelings) that are treated as a magic litmus test for things to come or having a connection with ghosts or using divination like tarot which is based on either throwaway lines or background details that don't particularly affect the plot yet the fandom treats as one of their major traits that get used in plots alot. Romani people get stereotyped with that sort of mysticism alot, especially in association with the Fortune Telling business and to a lesser extent Mediumship and general superstition. I could also chalk this up to the mystic cat stereotype, particularly in association with witches and the like.

Joxter gets (or at least got, a while back) casted as the malevolent counterpart to Snufkin for the sake of Daddy Issues Angst, and that combined with people's dissatisfaction with Joxter and Snufkin's more human designs gave way to very impish or even monsterous depictions of Joxter (and sometimes Snufkin), which we can make parallels to antisemitic caricatures of Jewish people; sharp teeth, pointy ears, strange eyes, predominant nose, hind legs, tails, claws, generally untrustworthy vibes all around. Unclean and tattered, not to be trusted by others in any proximity; good for nothing thieves and tricksters.

People like to make "Mumriks" this massively marginalized group, afterall the two fellas we know are like... Hrm. But Joxter's lifestyle is hopelessly conflated with Snufkin's... Darn. People try to draw lines where they think they are but in doing so, it trying to replicate Tove's style of "some behaviors being inherent to a species" (which one can debunk with some critical thought and literacy) they accidentally create these stereotypes, they don't draw clear distinctions between Joxter and Snufkin even though Snufkin's mother is a Mymble, they don't consider how weird it would be within the context of our culture or even the context of these characters, yet somehow...

But this is just my thoughts as they currently are, I have thought about it alot but I do need to be on the lookout for more examples and do more proper digging. Again, I'm not accusing anyone of bigotry and purposefully baking them into characters who are clearly their darling faves, I'm just saying that there are certain things one must keep in mind when it comes to characterization and headcanons, or else one could accidentally recreate malicious bigotry without any malice.

Hello I was wondering if joxter and mymble would be in your au (I love your art :>)

Thank you so much! That means a lot! And yes, they certainly are in each AU that I have (which is at least three lmao) But not every version of their relationship is what many fans reasonably and understandably like to headcanon. I'm gonna take this opportunity to jabberjaw a bit about my theory/headcanons on Mumriks, Mymbles and the family of Snufkin. I haven't decided which AU this applies to, but there's a version of their relationship where he's literally just a baby-daddy. He got her pregnant while in the valley then did his Mumrik thing and wandered off before anybody, even Mymble, knew she was pregnant with Snufkin. In this continuum, Mymbles are notoriously opportunistic breeders while Snufkins (or Mumriks as most o us know them) are inherently nomadic and opportunistic breeders which was the perfect storm for an absent father + a mother who's too busy with her brood to keep track of everybody, which was how Snufkin ended up 'lost'. Luckily, his kind (on his fathers side) are instinctively proficient survivalists even at a young age. Joxters insatiable Wanderlust meant that he got Mymble pregnant then wandered off for years at a time while she took on other partners. While there are obviously very many other species in the valley alone, Mymble seemingly gravitated towards others of her species, or her species have very strong dominant genes. This might explain why all of Snufkins half siblings bear a strong resemblance to their mother, while Snufkin resembles her greatly but with notable Snufkin (Mumrik) features which sets him apart. It could be that Snufkins(Mumriks) are an uncommon, rare or even endangered species which is why Joxter and Snufkin are the only known members of their kind in the franchise. Or perhaps Joxter himself is mixed with Mymble and something akin to whatever Stinky is or something else entirely causing for Snufkins genes to become further muted.

And of course there is the continuum where Joxter wanders for long periods of time but always comes back to Mymble. We can assume that Mymble Jr and My aren't his children, but any or all of the 34 after or around Snufkin could be. It's hard to judge from the books and comics what traits the 34 children have. In the anime, they all seem to have their mothers red hair and then the two Mymble children that Snorkmaiden plays mommy for also have red hair. We might/can assume that red hair is very much a Mymble characteristic then. So maybe none of the 34 are Joxters children. But in the 2019 iteration, they have red, blonde and brown hair, so in this continuum, some or all of them could be Joxters. And since they seem to be largely identical in age in most/all iterations, perhaps they come in litters. It wouldn't explain why Mymble Jr., My and Snufkin seem to be the only ones in their age groups, however. How Mymble could have three children, presumably at least a year apart, then suddenly thirty plus all at once, is a mystery. I am willing to attribute this to the fact that in the 2019 iteration, the children (and Woodies) all have the exact same character models for the boys and the girls. Literally. So not bothering to change their heights either could be more or less the result of IRL factors and not In Universe factors.

Omg yes thank you!

So the eldest would be a mumrik daughter named Motley. She would have patches of white and blonde fur in her tail, like her mother. But otherwise, she would look exactly like a little Snufkin.

Except, she mostly takes after her Aunt My. Aka: Motley is a little gremlin girl. She has so much energy, like a little kitten, and she loves to follow Snufkin around and try to grab his tail. Despite her mischievous ways, Motley is a little mamma’s girl. Sometimes, Snorkmaiden is the only one she will listen to. Every night, she begs Snorkmaiden to read her “just one more story”.

Next in line is Snoflen, a little snork boy. Snoflen is a bit of a crybaby, very sensitive and easily upset. Additionally, he tends to be very clumsy.

Moomintroll is especially weak to Snoflen’s teary-eyed face. He has a habit of spoiling Snoflen when he thinks no one is watching. Because of this, Snoflen becomes very attached to Moomintroll.

Motley and Snoflen have an interesting relationship, because on one hand, she likes to torment him, but on the other hand, she’s very overprotective of him. Basically, a “you can’t be mean to him! Only I can be mean to him!” mentality.

Last is Min-Min, a little moomin girl. Min-Min, in contrast with her siblings, is a perfect little angel of a child. She tends to be quiet, thoughtful, and well-behaved. However, this sometimes means that Motley and Snoflen get all the attention, and instead of making a big fuss, Min-Min will try to hide her sadness by sneaking away to be alone.

Snufkin feels a strong kinship with her. He’s usually the first one to realize that Min-Min is hiding something. But instead of pressuring her to talk, he will invite her to spend some one-on-one time with him. Usually, this involves fishing or hunting for shells on the beach.

Then he will wait patiently for Min-Min to finally open up.

Motley and Snoflen both adore Min-Min, but they tend to baby her a little too much. Motley especially goes through a phase where she tries to carry Min-Min around everywhere, like a giant stuffed animal. And Snoflen is always stepping in to try to do things for his baby sister, rather than letting her try to do it herself.

For this reason, Snorkmaiden and Snufkin have to have a stern talk with Motley and Snoflen, explaining that Min-Min can’t learn if she isn’t given opportunities to explore and be her own person.

Thankfully, Moomintroll is waiting in the wings to rush in with distractions once Motley and Snoflen become upset, the first yelling in indignation and the second blubbering like a whale. He gets them calmed down enough that they finally listen to their mother and daddy Snufkin.

Min-Min appreciates it when his siblings stop overcrowding her, though part of her misses being carried everywhere.

Overall, parenthood turns out to be a lot more chaotic than any one of them was expecting. But despite all of the mayhem, they love their children too much to regret it.
