I’m still working on the timestamp writeup (links, sources, etc.) and, uh, that updated version with some corrections at the end. I’ve also been formatting the writeup for Tumblr and, uhhh.... it’s like four posts. It’s honestly just embarrassing. But I know what the carving on the church door you might not even notice says, I know why all the oscillating fans are turquoise blue, I’ve found a thematically relevant Goya painting hidden in a shop you don’t even have to enter, and now we all have to suffer for it. 

The second video’s been recorded but isn’t uploaded anywhere, and I’ve finished taking notes for the writeup. I’m taking so long that I might honestly just clip out a few excerpts and put them on my YouTube channel (I have a YouTube channel) (in theory).

(Yes, watching other people play video games IS a valid way to enjoy them, and it’s how I got into playing in the first place.)

Alex nods his thanks to Shaan and slips inside Henry’s rooms. Henry’s been stuck doing event after appearance after fundraiser for the last three weeks and Alex couldn’t take it anymore.

The first week wasn’t so bad – plenty of texting and nightly Skype sessions and a new, secret (extra secure) email chain had been enough. The second week was harder – pining for the feeling of Henry next to him in bed was bad enough, but watching David pine was too much even for the least emotionally demonstrative person in the world. (Zahra had cooed at David when she dropped off Alex’s itinerary. Cooed. Alex didn’t even know she could make that noise.)

By the beginning of the third week, Alex wasn’t sleeping more than a few hours a night, barely remembering to eat, and was generally all kinds of a mess of a person. When he’d broken down and emailed Shaan, the relief in his response confirmed that Henry was having just as hard a time. Alex booked the plane tickets the same minute Shaan said he would help Alex surprise Henry.

Henry’s at some sort of gala fundraiser event for Bea’s charity tonight, and it runs late enough that Alex isn’t worried about getting to his rooms before him, despite his plane’s late night arrival time. Shaan, efficient, wonderful Shaan had met him and the Secret Service at Heathrow with a private car and whisked them away to Kensington as soon as Alex had collected his suitcase.

But now he’s here, in Henry’s suite, the smell of Henry’s cologne wrapping around him like a warm blanket. He stashes his clothes and toiletries, changes into pajamas and then pulls out the copy of Pride and Prejudice that Alex always denies owning, let alone reading. He’s determined to keep himself awake until Henry gets back, and falls into the story, letting Elizabeth’s commentary entertain him.

A gentle hand on his shoulder pulls Alex back into the waking world and he looks up and smiles sleepily at Henry. He looks stupidly handsome in his tux – something about the undone bowtie is really doing it for him.

“Hey, baby.”

“Alex,” Henry breathes, face suffused with wonder. “You’re here? But—”

“Cleared my schedule. Couldn’t stand it any longer. Missed you too much,” Alex murmurs, letting his head tip to the side and rest on Henry’s arm, gazing up at him adoringly. Henry’s here.

“Christ, it’s good to see you. Come to bed, love.”

Alex lets Henry help him up, but draws him into a hug and a gentle, sleepy kiss before shuffling to the bed. For once, Henry just throws his clothes onto the nearby chair and slides under the sheets with Alex as soon as he’s down to his briefs. Alex practically melts when Henry throws an arm over his waist and drags him closer. This – this contact, this comfort, this love – that’s what Alex has been missing the most.

Considering I'm me and I'm allowed to be petty, I do want to grouse about something in a place that is purely mine and won't be part of the greater commentary I might make, but I want to shake out my personal irritation that I know very few other people share, and so is just here for me to complain about.

One - THIS was the place in the story that they let Dorian's romance be shot in the foot for? A pair of brief cameos that could be excised entirely without too much damage to the plot?

I mean, sure, I know, Veilguard went through a handful of total plot rewrites and all, but... The fact that Dorian and the Magisterium play so NOTHING of a role in things, when his romance was strangled in the course of Trespasser to effectively facilitate him playing a role in this game?

Like yeah, that was just the nail in the coffin for me, I don't find his character worth engaging with in general and the fact that his romance was reduced to "leaving forever, here's my medieval Skype number, BYYYYYYYYYE!~" only made things the worse... And to see it play out like this, where he doesn't even MATTER?

I mean, maybe he does more in a "go to Minrathous in Act I" run, but... Yeah, this just compounded a problem.

Two - Okay, now's the part where I REALLY get petty. Dude does nothing but be there in the final battle and ends up becoming the Archon? So he LUCKS IN to a place where he can do whatever they want with him in the future?

THIS is where I get so frustrated with what they did with Dorian, from Inquisition to here. We never have to SEE this character wrestle with and reckon with his biases and privilege. He dismisses slavery and poverty as basically being the same thing, and that's all the focus that Inquisition wanted to give him on the subject of how he wants to "redeem" Tevinter. He gives no indication of understanding what makes Tevinter so repulsive to the other nations of Thedas, brushing it all off.

Like I commonly call bullshit on him being all "It's ALTUS, not MAGISTER, and using the terms interchangeably just makes you southerners seem like barbarians," when this is the guy who ends up dismissing slavery done by his countrymen. Hell, his quest for the War Table, about finding the true name of Corypheus stinks - REEKS - of shouting "#NotAllMagisters!" into a megaphone, trying to distance modern Tevinter from its historical crimes, while the face of those crimes is our actual enemy, backed by his present day countrymen. Faced with both the evil of Tevinter's past AND present, what effort does he make to say Tevinter's future is going to be different? NOTHING.

And then, just like how Veilguard gives him the position of Archon, he gets lucked in to the role of being in the Magisterium, when his father dies. BioWare basically tried to patch the failure of Inquisition to actually develop him by talking up in extended media how "oh, now I have paid servants, not slaves!" but... This is development that SHOULD have been at the heart of his character arc in Inquisition, because if he actually wanted to be "the Redeemer of Tevinter," he needed to FACE the ills of Tevinter and understand what and why and how Tevinter - INCLUDING. HIM. - need to change.

And instead, BioWare just completely hands Dorian EVERYTHING he needs for such "changes." Changing everything about society doesn't involve YOU changing anything, it's you getting LUCKY ENOUGH to end up when you can just snap your fingers and MAKE that change.

Lazy, lazy, LAZY character writing. Honestly, I'm content just saying that Dorian Pavus died in Elgar'nan's siege of Minrathous. And nothing of value is lost, because Dorian DOES nothing of value.

4. which muse of yours is your all time favorite? if you stopped writing them: why?

Lysandre. By far.

I had a lot of time and work put into him, but ultimately I stopped writing him due to a combination of starting a new job, life stresses, having no time, and my own mental health issues. But he's still my favorite muse I've ever written — the amount of worldbuilding I and each of my writing partners ( and our non-roleplay friends via Skype ) did was massive. I worry that if I ever brought him back, a lot of his characterization / worldbuilding wouldn't make sense anymore, between a lack of people familiar with all his storylines as well as whatever development has happened in the rpc / anime / what have you. I contemplated it! But I don't think I could bring him back, tbh.

Which is a shame because his ending arc as the blog closed off dealt a lot with his newfound immortality after Xerneas decided to punish him. He was fun to watch develop because on one hand I had the funny cute haha shipping side, which back in the day of personals spectating rp blogs, got a lot of commentary — but on the other hand ( in the actual, more serious main verse ) he was slowly spiralling into a worse and worse version of himself that ultimately resulted in the destruction of flare and the end of his relationship that resulted in ( canonically, on my sycamore partner's blog ) years of therapy for Augustine to recover from the whiplash of everything that happened between them.

Also shout-out to the Serena I used to write with who made a side-verse with me where she was Lys's daughter and didn't know it. Lives in my mind rent-free all the time because GOD the torment of him being taken down by his own daughter who he thought he was protecting. 100/10 if I ever were able to write him again I'd go that route.

It also doesn't make sense. Why Microsoft didn't buy Twitter since LinkedIn feeds into Twitter. both the personal Twitter account and a business Twitter account.

Secondly, it doesn't make sense why they have an integrated LinkedIn and Skype, together with Office 365. And the data storage of one drive... So Microsoft is very disjointed, and it's not good. The systems need to be integrated and complement each other... So like three sixty-five you can schedule a Skype meeting and then it can take notes on that meeting recording voice to text..... Then that can go into the office under client notes or prospect notes..... Yes, an office. You can schedule on the calendar when to put out different content on LinkedIn. It's also a scheduled meeting on LinkedIn that gets recorded on your calendar from office.... And it also feeds in the commentary section of LinkedIn, you can set it up where it will feed into your client database. I'm not convinced this will outright nuke the platform in its immediacy, but so much of this is a bad idea that will kill it LONG term. They're attempting to homogenize the platform to get its features working on WordPress.

I'm calling it now they're absolutely doing this to push all of its userbase onto WordPress so that they can liquidate Tumblr's assets and potentially either downscale development of it or shut it down entirely. Naturally I have no hard proof of that but I do have conjecture worth pointing out from both the current situation and similar occurrences.

Look at Skype: Microsoft did exactly that to create Teams. It bought out THE most potently popular social networking app on the market at the time. After ripping through it with ads, features no one asked for and letting the actual infrastructure of the app's VOIP feature and chat functionality waste away (recall just how bad the voice chat quality and stability was before the mass exodus of users)? They gutted the project entirely, cannibalized its features and made a new applet in its place that was proprietary and gave Microsoft complete control over it: Teams.

With Tumblr hemorrhaging money due to their continued incompetence both on a moderation standpoint (there are still so many obvious cases of favoritism and dog-piling, especially regarding trans people) and a monetization level due to their incessant shoving of ads that still have zero oversight and a subscription service that provides so little value... Well, you can see why I'm watching this with a rather scornful eye. WordPress is Automattic's bread and butter. And after the current Tumblr CEO had a very vocal portion of the userbase (rightfully, in my opinion) absolutely rip him apart for his site's treatment of trans women and his frankly embarrassing responses to all of the commentary? Why would any tech company CEO want to hold onto something their users clearly spite them over?

Note: this is CONJECTURE. I cannot, for anything said, state this is the end-all, be-all state of affairs for their plans.

But I'm backing my blog up nonetheless, and I recommend you do so, too.

automattic's made a ton of blunders recently but i hope they're not gonna try something like convert tumblr to run on wordpress, a project that both tumblr and wordpress engineers agreed would be a lot of work for no gain (most likely worse performance). that would be a silly thing to do.

Literate programming doesn’t have to be just for currently live programs: it’s also a way to study old ones. In the early stages of the lockdown, when my brother Toby was recovering from COVID-19, we did a little work over Skype each evening on presenting a commentary for an existing program. Toby had disassembled and puzzled out the ROM for a 1981 computer called the BBC Micro, but wasn’t sure how to present his findings. Literate programming turned out to be good for this, and what could have been an unreadable assembly language file is instead turning into a lively website of interlinked code, with downloads, photos of what the underside of the keyboard looks like, audio of what getting an extra life in Zalaga sounded like, videos, bits of historical documents, and little BBC Micro programs to try out. You could imagine a program like that becoming a kind of museum exhibition. But such a program can still be compiled.
