"I would think you would be used to this by now?"
Swan Princess Starters - Still Accepting!
Tumblr media
Such a simple phrase has the impact of a cold steelknife. ‘Use to this? Use to this?’ Yes, of course. Why shouldn’t she be? What wasanother student’s DEATH? What was another meaningless loss. Another poor, unfortunate fool. All her fault. ALL HER BLAME.
(No.. No, no, no… No, this wasn’t supposed to happen. They weren’t supposed to die! How could one test go so horrifically wrong?! Thepoison shouldn’t have been that effective, those…IDIOTS! FOOLS! How could theybe so careless with the dosage?! Why didn’t they listen to her!? She warned them, she KNOWS about poisons better than anyone, so WHY—?!)
Veiled under a motionless mask. This time, it felt effortless. Frozen. Still. As she sits like a perfect statue in the aftermath of her decisions, of an experiment gone wrong only half an hour before. Pathetic were her frustrations, her petty rage. All aweak cover to her own guilt. For a shameless sin committed: She allowed this. She condoned the use of test subjects for the toxins, poisons—HER poisons. Allfor the sake of knowing her weapons were functional. Signed her name andeverything. All except her actual s o u l.
With Satsuki Kiryuin, once standing witness, now finding her again. Why was she here? To berate her? Can’t she be left alone to remove her artificial facade, her act of pretending this shouldn’t—didn’t bother her anymore? No, instead she has to save face (again), because Lady Satsuki will NOT accept weakness.Because she SHOULD be used to this. It wasn’t the first unfortunate death…and it certainly would not be the last. Whether it be by her or someone else’s actions.
“…On the contrary, My Lady. If I become too used to it,then the fine line between necessary sacrifices and needless slaughter willbegin to blur…and this will all become utterly pointless.”
Damnit. Hold your tongue. (’Ha.’) Stay calm. (’It’s notlike she cares.’) Remain composed. (What’s another low-life No-Star to a Queen?) Keep yourexpression motionless and still. (’After all, she’s HER daughter after all.’) Do not betraythose pathetic feelings—to Satsuki Kiryuin of all people. Everything lockeddown. Shutting off everything, not daring to think too deeply, to feel anythingwhile they’re were witnesses. Concealing to hide how much it HURTS…
“Forgive me. I spoke out of terms. I am to blame. The dosagewas too…potent.”
But all Mio wanted to do was s c r e a m. She hated herself. So angry, so petty in her mind.
“We’ll have to lower it next time, or try somethingelse entirely.”
She did this. She killed them. It wasn’t Lady Satsuki’sflaunt: It was H e r s.
“At least it wasn’t too painful a passing.”
Because truly, Mio really wasn’t any better than therest.
“Shall I personally inform the student’s family?”
