I recently read a fic where the author occasionally uses pronoun options for characters the first time they're introduced, but then doesn't carry through with it for the rest of the story.

As in, "Character rolled out of her/their bed" was the first we saw of the protagonist. Clumsy and awkward, but I figure the author wants to make it clear that this character is nonbinary and will use both of those pronouns throughout the story, right? WRONG.

For the entire rest of the 25k fic, the character exclusively uses she/her pronouns, her gender never comes up, and soutside of pronouns she is referred to exclusively by feminine gendered terms such as "girl" and "woman", and even, on one memorably poorly written occasion, "female spellcaster".

The same things happens for a few more characters, both men and women; the first sentence that uses a pronoun for them uses "he/they" or "she/they" as the pronoun, which leands me to assume they're nonbinary and use both pronouns, but then the rest of the fic presents them as a binary men and women who only ever uses masculine or feminine language.

And we have several other characters who are nonbinary and who use exclusively they/them, who aren't given pronoun options in the narrative introduction, so I don't think the author is after brownie points for including nonbinary characters without having to actually include nonbinary characters.

It's just weird to see a very clumsy sentence that tells me something important about the character, something so important the author chose to mangle their sentence to get it across. And then it's never touched on ever again.

At first it was just the protagonist and I thought it was a typo, maybe in an early draft the author hadn't decided what gender their protagonist was and forgot to fix that sentence for the final version. But then we got the same for other characters, and always in the first sentence where a pronoun is used a given character.

And then I glanced at the author's other work and it looks like they do this for about half of their characters who he/him or she/her pronouns. Very weird.

It wasn't that Cecily didn't trust him or anything like that, she was just matching his energy. "Ohh Stradlin," she said as though that description just now jogged her memory. She'd argue she could be a tough crowd too, just not in the literal greaser sense he'd meant it. "I like it, I think the waterfall's a bit much. I don't know how it ties into pride either, or if it's camp, but I'm still pretty new to this whole gay thing, so..." She gave him a knowing look as she finished off the rest of her drink. "Nope, I'm good- On the questions, I mean, I do want another drink."

Sweet Pea x Reader - The Art Student / Part II / Part I HERE!

You were on your way home after staying late in the art studio, you had promised your dad that you wouldn’t stay past dark while he was at work, but what he didn’t know what hurt him. You took your normal route home, headphones on, so you weren’t exactly paying attention to your surroundings. Basically, at this point, you were tempting fate in every single way possible, you even thought about how cliche this was but you figured nothing interesting ever happens in Riverdale. 

At this point, it had started to rain and with little to cover you, your steps hastened. That was until you stopped at a large gathering of people, you wondered what was going on, not wanting to be spotted or get yourself unintentionally involved you decided to backtrack “well, well, well, what do we have ourselves here boys?!” , too late, you were unsure how to react and what to do. You knew you had little chance of outrunning them and so with that, you decided to at least turn and face them at least you would be able to identify them. Much to your dismay, it was a bunch of Ghoulies, “umm, look I’m not looking for any trouble, my dad’s expecting me home, so I really best be off” the leader of the group turned to his boys “oh, hear that boys, she’s not looking for anything and her dad is expecting her. Well listen here darling, you may not be looking for trouble but it certainly has found you and we know that daddy dearest works at the hospital and is on the late shift. So, no one is expecting you home” you felt it, the adrenaline but you weren’t sure if it was enough to get you home. The leader caressed your cheek while circling behind you, wrapping his arm around your waist, leaning in to whisper in your ear “so darling, how about me and you have some fun?”. As you gulped in some fresh air, a roar of an engine and a bright headlight stunned the group, the leader loosened his grip slightly, a voice you recognised called out “Y/N, quick get on!” you couldn’t make out who it was but they knew you so you slammed your elbow into the gut of the leader and bolted for the bike, jumping on. With that, the rider kicked off the ground and you sped away from the group. 

In what felt like seconds you were outside Pops, you climbed off the back of the bike, “oh my god! thank you so much! you are a lifesaver, I don’t know how I can repay the favor“ you looked up to see Sweet Pea hoovering over you “well, I guess milkshakes on you then” he sauntered off into Pop’s, you following closely behind, slightly dumbfounded that Sweet Pea had been your rescuer.

Nightmares and Cuddles

Sweet Pea x Reader

Sweet Pea would definitely be out kind of late.

You'd been having issues sleeping for a good minute because of all the school work and tests, so you'd decided to go back home early for some much needed rest.

Of course, Sweet Pea let you, agreeing but wanting to stay out a little longer.

You'd fallen asleep almost as soon as your head touched the pillow.

It was about midnight, maybe one, when Sweet Pea came back home, sneaking through the window as to not disturb your parents.

You were sound asleep, at least it seemed. He barely heard the sniffle as he landed on the floor. It wasn't until he went to kick off his boots that he finally heard a whimper and gasp escape your lips.

He finished with taking off his boots - to make his steps quieter - before walking over to check on you.

Your mouth was slightly agap, silent tears trailing down your cheeks. An adorable, yet worrying, tremble shook through you.

It was then he decided to wake you.

He jerked off his jacket, tossing it onto the chair in your room before gently placing his hands atop your cheeks.

"Love, wake up for me. Come on honey, I need you to wake up."

It wasn't working, so he placed a kiss on your forehead as he slowly began to push you over so he could climb into bed.

Once he was firmly beside you, he placed quite a few kisses over your face, starting on your cheeks, to your nose, forehead, jaw, and finally, your lips.

"Babygirl... open those pretty eyes for me. I'm here." He placed one more kiss to your eye, successfully waking you up.

"Pea?" You mumbled, tears still streaming past your waterline.

He gripped you tightly, "It's me honey. I'm here. It's alright. What happened?"

You shrugged, not really remembering much about the dream besides the fear of losing Sweet Pea.

"Well, let's just cuddle until you can sleep. I'm right here baby. Nothing can happen while we're in this bed. Not one bad thing."

You sniffled again while snuggling deeper into Sweet Pea's chest.

Though, he moved.

You huffed, the fear wearing off, being replaced with pouty sleepiness.

"I just need to take off my clothes doll. I hopped right in bed to make sure you were ok." All he received was another huff.

Still, he removed himself before his clothes. Then, he slid directly into your grasp once more. "See? I'm not leaving you."

You rolled your eyes as you laid your head back onto his chest. His warmth made a weary smile appear onto your face.

"Goodnight princess. I love you." "Goodnight lovely. I love you."

With those last words, Sweet Pea squeezed you quickly. His arms finding their permanent spot around you.

I really hope you enjoy this. I've never done headcanons, so I hope they turned out good. Also, I do apologize for them taking so long. I'm trying to get back into writing. If anyone who's requested something sees this:
