smoke clung to your lungs and fled out through your nose. you choked and spluttered on the last bits of oxygen before darkness drowned you in its embrace.

your eyes snapped open and you coughed in spite of yourself. there was nothing enveloping you nor did the howling spitfires remain. a dream. no, a nightmare. nothing more, nothing less.

without even thinking your hands sought out the figure usually at your side in slumber. but upon finding his spot empty with only a fresh imprint of where he should have been, you clambered out of bed.

your lover, a complicated and yet simple man, leaned against the railing of your balcony. his eyes remained distant and conflicted. the creak of the bed frame alerted his attention and he turned to look at you.

night swept into the chilled room and he tried to smile faintly at you in the darkness. you saw past that and went to his side in an instant.

"nightmares?" you asked, grasping his bandaged hand in your own.

"unfortunately," he murmured, "and you? looks like the sandman wasn't very kind to us tonight."

you laughed spitefully, following suit and leaning against the railing, pulling yourself up comfortably beside him.

"wanna talk about it?" you asked.

he paused, mulling over your offer with precision. "i couldn't find you," he admitted, "no matter where i went, you were gone. i swear i screamed your name till my throat was raw."

you watched the bob of his adam's apple and the way he circled patterns onto your knuckles with his thumb. "i thought i lost you."

the two of you processed the emotions dazai appeared to be going through. he slowly let out a breath before smiling feebly back at you.

"silly, right?"

"no, not at all," you corrected, "i would have done the same for you."

and dazai stared at you. unspoken words flickered through his dark eyes and, for just a mere moment, he seemed genuinely surprised about something.

then he chuckled, pressing a serene kiss to your head. "really, now? you think you'd miss me?"

at his teasing tone, you nudged his ribs, shooting him a warning glance. "oh, shut up. of course, i would."

"and where have you been?"

you blinked at the man in front of you. he swayed uneasily on the chair he sat upon. the nearly empty bottle of booze settled nicely on the countertop. judging by the fact there was no cup in sight, it was likely he had brought it back from his night out with old friends.

"i thought you said you were going to be out all night. i went out for dinner with friends," you said, a short smile tugging at the side of your lip.

mitsuya softened his gaze before chuckling lowly. the sound brought a warm, mellow feeling to the pit of your stomach.

"i started to miss you."

the warmth spread to your cheeks and your eyes darted away from him for just a second. mitsuya stood back up, making his way to you with a little too much ease for a drunk man.

"did you miss me too?" he whispered, leaning closer to coo into the husk of your ear. his hands wrapped gently around your wrist and waist, cradling you as if you were made of glass.

"you were gone for only a couple hours, mitsu—"

"ah, ah," he interrupted, "say my name."

that warm feeling burned and ignited in your chest. his fingers trailed lightly up your back, sweeping underneath your shirt to graze your skin.

when you still said nothing—practically glued to the way he gazed at you with such an intensity you might have been set ablaze on the spot—he let out another low laugh and tapped your lips with a single finger.

"say my name."

"takashi," you murmured, "happy?"

"very," he said with a smile as sweet as an angel's.

you sighed, trying to ignore the hand still sliding under your shirt, tracing little patterns into your skin.

"you didn't answer the question," he mumbled. the pink tinting his cheeks was lessening but you doubted he would sober up any time soon.

glancing away from his avid demands, you rubbed his arm gently. "what question?"

"did you miss me too?"

oh god, this could have been the death of you. you leaned your forehead against his shoulder, burying yourself into the crook of his neck.

"you're drunk, takashi."

"i don't care. answer the question," he insisted, nipping a kiss onto the skin of your neck.

"okay, okay," you whined, unburying yourself from his embrace to look back at your lover, "i missed you while you were out."

with that, mitsuya's angelic smile returned.
