i think i'm going to say that after alexius is judged, dorian ends up inheriting a lot of his former mentor's research. he'd deliberately not allowed direct contact with alexius, unless it's a (closely supervised) social call, but he's the best equipped to understand all of alexius' research notes. some of them are helpful, some are just personal notes, but there's quite a bit of theory on time travel and manipulation that dorian isn't sure what to do with.

he spends quite a bit of time studying the notes, completing some of the work, and turning it into a functional school of magic--chronurgy. it's highly experimental. when he's not doing anything else for the inquisition, whether it's research or field work, he's working on refining the magic and his technique, even going so far as to pass his notes over to solas for review before practicing himself.

the results? he adds the following spells to his spellbook, things that only dorian can cast:

haste - able to speed up the actions of his party

slow - slows down up to 10 enemies

reality crunch - a singular target suffers madness as they see infinite alternate timelines

time break - rapidly ages a single target to near death
