How One Piece Of Hardware Took Down A $6 Trillion Stock Market (Bloomberg) -- At 7:04 a.m. on an autumn Thursday in Tokyo, the stewards of the world’s third-largest equity market realized they had a problem.
A data device critical to the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s trading system had malfunctioned, and the automatic backup had failed to kick in. It was less than an hour before the system, called Arrowhead, was due to start processing orders in the $6 trillion equity market. Exchange officials could see no solution.
The full-day shutdown that ensued was the longest since the exchange switched to a fully electronic trading system in 1999. It drew criticism from market participants and authorities and shone a spotlight on a lesser-discussed vulnerability in the world’s financial plumbing -- not software or security risks but the danger when one of hundreds of pieces of hardware that make up a trading system decides to give up the ghost.
“Exchanges are a crucial part of market infrastructure and it’s unacceptable that trading opportunities were denied,” Finance Minister Taro Aso told reporters in Tokyo. “You’re dealing with machines so it’s always possible they will break. They need to create the infrastructure with that possibility of a breakdown in mind.”

The TSE’s Arrowhead system launched to much fanfare in 2010, billed as a modern-day solution after a series of outages on an older system embarrassed the exchange in the 2000s. The “arrow” symbolizes speed of order processing, while the “head” suggests robustness and reliability, according to the exchange. The system of roughly 350 servers that process buy and sell orders had had a few hiccups but no major outages in its first decade.

That all changed on Thursday, when a piece of hardware called the No. 1 shared disk device, one of two square-shaped data-storage boxes, detected a memory error. These devices store management data used across the servers, and distribute information such as commands and ID and password combinations for terminals that monitor trades.
When the error happened, the system should have carried out what’s called a failover -- an automatic switching to the No. 2 device. But for reasons the exchange’s executives couldn’t explain, that process also failed. That had a knock-on effect on servers called information distribution gateways that are meant to send market information to traders.
Disappearing Data
At 8 a.m., traders preparing at their desks for the market open an hour later should have been seeing indicative prices on their terminals as orders were processed. But many saw nothing, while others reported seeing data appearing and disappearing. They had no idea if the information was accurate.
A minute later, the bourse made its first communication, informing systems administrators at securities firms that there had been an issue. At some brokerages, that didn’t immediately filter down to befuddled trading desks.
At about 8:05 a.m., Twitter -- often used by traders to communicate outside of more official communication channels monitored by compliance -- began to buzz with rumors of an issue. Traders described a growing sense of confusion as few answers came from the bourse.
“We didn’t know if it was our system or the exchange,” said Masaya Akiba, a broker at Marusan Securities Co.’s stock-trading department. “We only confirmed it when the exchange put out a release.”
At 8:36 a.m., the bourse finally informed securities firms that trading would be halted. Three minutes later, it issued a press release on its public website -- although only in Japanese. A confusingly translated English release wouldn’t follow for more than 90 minutes.
It was the first time in almost fifteen years that the exchange had suffered a complete trading outage. The Tokyo bourse has a policy of not shutting even during natural disasters, so for many on trading floors in the capital, this experience was a first.
Historic Decision
Some market participants fumed at the closure. Others, with nothing to do, occupied their time by reading research notes or trading commodities.
“I didn’t think much of it at first,” said Kiyoshi Ishigane, the chief fund manager at Mitsubishi UFJ Kokusai Asset Management Co. in Tokyo. “Previous outages were quickly resolved so I assumed orders would just be delayed.”
In 2012, after the switchover to Arrowhead, the exchange had quickly resolved limited issues. Many expected the bourse to do the same this time, too.
But as the hours passed, Hajime Sakai, the chief fund manager at Mito Securities Co., grew increasingly uneasy.
“I really couldn’t pay attention to much else,” he said. “I wasn’t like, ‘Open the market!’ It was more like, ‘whichever it is, make your call on it, fast.’”
The call was a daunting one. After the failed switch to the backup, the exchange had manually forced a switchover to the No. 2 shared disk device. At this point, the administrators had a choice: they could seek to restart trading, but this would have entailed a full reset of the system -- shutting down the power and rebooting.
Data for orders already received from securities firms would have been lost, without having been canceled. That would have led to anarchy, securities firms told the exchange. After speaking with market participants, the exchange made its decision: trading would be called off for the entire day.
Many in the market say they were relieved. A call to resume trading would have been chaotic, said one worker at a Tokyo-based brokerage, with no way to tell which existing client orders remained active, while also trying to process new asks and bids.
Technical Discussion
At 4:30 p.m. local time, four TSE executives, including Chief Executive Officer Koichiro Miyahara and Chief Information Officer Ryusuke Yokoyama, faced journalists at the exchange to explain the outage. In a briefing that lasted about 100 minutes, they bowed in apology in front of the crowded room before going into a detailed technical discussion of the breakdown.
If the bourse was criticized for its communications earlier in the day, it won praise for how it handled the press conference. The executives answered questions from the media with relative ease, discussing areas such as systems architecture in highly technical terms. They also squarely accepted responsibility for the incident, rather than trying to deflect blame onto the system vendor Fujitsu Ltd. It bore little resemblance to gaffe-filled briefings by other Japanese firms in the past. On Twitter, the Japanese public voiced its approval.
“Management explained very clearly during the briefing last night,” said Megumi Takarada, a senior analyst at Toyo Securities Co. in Tokyo. “The briefing provided some reassurance that management clearly understands the issue.”
Later in the evening, the announcement came that the bourse would restart trading Friday. While that passed without issue, many questions remain unanswered. The Financial Services Agency has ordered the exchange to issue a report on the outage, according to local media, which may give further insight on some of the issues.
But one of the biggest is whether the same kind of hardware-driven failure could happen in other stock markets. For one strategist, it almost certainly could -- but that’s not something to worry too much about.
“There’s nothing uniquely Japanese about this,” said Nicholas Smith of CLSA Ltd. in Tokyo. “I think we’ve just got to put that in the box of ‘stuff happens.’ These things happen. They shouldn’t, but they do.”

PRINCE WILLIAM AND KATE MADE A BIG DEAL OF PROTECTING THEIR PRIVACY. WELL, THIS WEEK, THE ROYAL PRESS PACK ABANDONED THEIR SCANDI TRIP, AND RUSHED BACK TO LONDON, FOR PRINCE HARRY AND MEGHAN.

Prince William, Prince Harry and Kate Middleton have long been suspected of taking petty satisfaction in thwarting the press pack assigned to cover them. But, now Meghan Markle’s courteous example is resetting Prince Harry’s relations with the fourth estate, and winning the hot new couple of British royalty outstanding coverage.
A perhaps unintentionally revealing message was posted on Twitter by The Daily Mail’s royal correspondent this week.
Halfway through Rebecca English’s coverage of Prince William and Kate’s tour of Scandinavia, she told her followers that she would be jumping ship, heading back to England to cover what would usually be a fairly standard (ie non-newsworthy) event — Britain’s Endeavor Fund awards, which honor the achievements of wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women who have taken part in sporting and adventure challenges, and their families.
The reason for the excitement was that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry would be attending, and handing out some of the prizes.
Many of the other British reporters on the royal beat also left the tour early to be home for Meghan’s big night out. Blowing out Kate and Prince William’s dour tour of frost-bitten Scandinavia, whose biggest draw seemed to be Kate’s extraordinarily unflattering selection of Erdem maternity dresses, certainly turned out to be the right tactical move.
Friday’s front pages were devoted across the board to coverage of Meghan and Prince Harry’s appearance in London.
Meghan, controversially perhaps, wore a McQueen trouser suit and jacket ensemble, a chic choice — although the suggestion in some quarters that she was wearing black in support of the #metoo movement may be a little far-fetched.
Meghan was praised by headline writers for ‘saving the day’ after she smoothly laughed off a mix up with paperwork on stage, joining in with the crowd’s giggles.
The tiresome task of writing up Prince William and Kate’s further adventures in Norway was handed over to junior staff, and made about as much impact as the fact that the self-described Royal ‘ideas factory’ Prince Andrew was making a fresh speech about the joys of British entrepreneurship (ie not very much).
It has been astonishing to witness in recent weeks just how completely the public appetite for information about Prince William, Kate and their family has collapsed and the hunger for coverage of Prince Harry and Meghan has grown commensurately.
Meghan has stolen — or at least been passed — Kate Middleton’s crown.
As one commentator told The Daily Beast recently, when Prince William and Kate turn up to an engagement these days, they are greeted with a welcoming party and reception not unlike that more usually given to a minor royal rather than the screaming fan kids of former days.
On a personal level, Prince William and Kate are unlikely to resent the tailing off of interest in their personal lives.
They know as well as anyone else that it’s not personal, and that novelty plays a huge factor.
As British comedy website The Mash succinctly put it, “Meghan has delivered a knockout blow to take the crown because Kate’s been around for ages and we’re bored of her.”
The deeper truth is that Prince William and Kate have spent much of the past few years chastising the press for what they see as a prurient interest in their private lives, issuing missives on a semi-regular basis complaining of the latest outrageous invasion of privacy.
Whether or not the reality of turning up to sparsely populated events will change their attitude remains to be seen — as Prince William and Kate have often appeared to go out of their way to deliberately antagonize and irritate the press pack tasked with following them.
A prime example of this is their refusal to stop for a few seconds and pose for pictures, or give reporters a few words while on public engagements.
“It’s a very dangerous game,” one veteran royal correspondent told The Daily Beast — and now there’s a sense that the chickens are coming home to roost.
The behavior goes back to Prince William and Prince Harry’s entirely understandable belief that the press effectively killed their mother.
Whatever the truth of the multiple and competing claims by officials and conspiracy theorists surrounding the events of that tragic night, the central point of the brothers is accurate: had there been no paparazzi chasing Diana’s car, it’s unthinkable that it would have smashed into a pillar in a Paris underpass all those years ago. (An inquest in 2008, concluded that Diana’s death was caused by both the driving of chauffeur Henri Paul, and the paparazzi in pursuit of the car.)
Courtiers say that the brothers are merely following the Queen’s example when it comes to the press, and it is true that she does not give quotes to reporters on engagements or have a habit of posing for pictures.
But Prince Philip and the Queen have never been accused of trying to subtly frustrate photographers the way Kate, William and, formerly, Harry have done over the years, in an unfathomably obstinate exercise in self-harm.
In fact, Prince Harry was arguably the worst of the lot before he met Meghan. Witness his extraordinary interview with the BBC, in Afghanistan, when he told the reporter that he’d rather the guy wasn’t there. It might have been honest, it might have come from an authentic place of personal agony, but the image it projected was a master class in entitlement and arrogance.
But while Prince William and Kate have become entrenched in their confrontational attitudes to the press, Prince Harry appears to be learning a trick or two from Meghan about the art of diplomacy.
Ever since their relationship began, Prince Harry has been engaged in a comprehensive reset of relations with Fleet Street. There have been numerous, unprecedentedly personal interviews, in which he spoke of his personal struggles with panic attacks, paranoia, PTSD and other mental health issues.
He even spoke about the ‘chaos’ in a podcast with The Daily Telegraph, suggesting his wild youthful behavior had its roots in his personal life owing to his failure to properly process his mother’s death.
The conciliatory attitude to the press was also in evidence at Christmas when Prince Harry and Meghan chose to confirm in advance that they would be attending church with the Queen — a historic first that made the life of news desks considerably easier over the holidays.
Prince William and Kate have always appeared to take a petty pleasure in deliberately concealing the tiniest of details of their lives from the press — such as their whereabouts or, most famously, the name of their dog which was deemed ‘private’.
But Prince Harry and Meghan’s all-new approachability was on display again Thursday night at the Endeavor Fund awards, as the couple gave the press time as they entered and allowed themselves to be photographed.
Undoubtedly this new accommodation — a far more productive long-term strategy — is a result of Meghan’s influence on Prince Harry, one more benefit of his decision to marry someone used to the scrutiny of the public eye and courteously interacting with both press and fans.
Long may it continue — and who knows, maybe Prince William and Kate might discover themselves in a teachable moment.

Wow I mostly agree with a piece written by Will and Kate superfan Tom!
He did well until he metioned Harry being the worst and used the most ridiculous example to ‘prove this’. Harry said he would rather be doing his job which he was there to do, you know serve his country in a war zone, rather than doing an interview for the news - which they then edited to get headlines - seriously watch the unedited version and it is an entirely different interview. No wonder Harry was upset they made him leave his job and then edited him in the worse way!
As for the article I also wonder if this had anything to do with the tour in Bhutan too. You know why William and Kate while doing an engagement told the press to leave them alone because they wanted time to themselves. You know as they were working!
Anyway, how the Cambs are going to react to this because while they say the don’t like the press in reality it is obvious they just want it on their terms. They want to use it when they like, perhaps they will not be able to play the press in the way they want now so will start retracting a bit

The Classical Musician's Guide to Creating a Killer Facebook Artist Page

Hi, I'm Eric Salazar. I started a Facebook artist page for my playing called Eric Salazar, Clarinet in late 2015. Over the course of the next year I grew it by over 6000%! I'm now the second most followed clarinetist on all of Facebook with over 10,0000 likes.
Here are some of my tips and tricks on how to create a great Facebook page, and grow an engaged following from scratch.
Marketing
It’s the thing all musicians know they should do, but many aren’t sure how to get started doing it. If you have practiced your craft to the point where you sound great (or teach well) but still aren’t getting the business results you want, chances are not enough people know about you. This is where marketing comes in. Doing quality work should always be your priority, but if no one knows you are good at what you do then no one can hire you.
There are countless books, courses, and pieces of advice on marketing. There are also many different mediums of marketing - radio, tv, online, print. In this article, we are going to explore how to get started with social media marketing by creating a Facebook Business page. We are going to look at some of the key elements you need to get that page up and running!
Creating a Page
There are actually quite a few intricacies with the settings to play around with on a Facebook Business page. If you are mainly a performer, you will want to set up a Artist/Band/Public Figure page. If you are mainly an educator who is starting up a studio, you might consider setting up a Local Business/Place page instead. If you are in the instrument making/selling business, you can try making a Brand/Product page. Lastly, if you are someone who runs an organization there is an option for Company/Organization/Institution.
Don’t get too worried about picking the right type or about choosing the right settings for your page. These can always be adjusted later.
Set Aside Some Time
Rather than walk you through the step-by-step of the creation process, let’s trust in your ability to fill out the necessary information when setting up a page. Be sure to really set aside time to read all of the different settings and to make sure you are filling out the information accurately.
(The “Settings” tab can be found in the top right corner (above your cover photo) on the computer. On mobile, the “Settings” are found by tapping on the “...” in the top right corner (above your cover photo), then tapping “Edit Settings.”)
Use a Computer
It is best to set up your page on the computer. It can be done on your phone, but some of the settings will be hidden if you use your phone. Most of the time, the people who complain about Facebook for Business not working for them are the people who have not fully explored the settings tab, have not invested time in the process, or have not developed a clear plan for their page.
You Will Need...
For now, we will focus on a few things you need to have before you even start the process of setting up a page.
1. Fantastic, HD photos
The first thing anyone will see is your cover photo. Then their eyes go to your profile picture. Only lastly, do they read your name. This means that your photos need to GRAB their attention long enough for them to read your name and enticing enough for them to remember you. It’s often best to have your cover photo be an HD image of you performing and your profile picture to be your professional headshot. There is no real wrong way of doing it, just make sure that your pictures are dynamic. Be bold, not boring.
2. A Clear Description
This is where some people get confused. First and foremost, clearly communicate who you are and what you do - all of the language on your page should serve to advance your business goals. If you are trying to get more gigs, state that you are mainly a performer and highlight what makes you special. If you are trying to build your studio so you can have more income from teaching, state that you are an educator and explain why you are a great teacher.
Additionally. you need to have two descriptions prepared. One is called the “About” description and the other is the “Biography” description. The “About” description needs to be short, 1-3 sentences. Ideally just 2. The reason this needs to be short is because people will see this description when they hover over a link to your page. The “About” description should be short, ATTENTION GRABBING, and enticing. The “Biography” description is longer. This is where you can tell your life story. WARNING: if your “About” description is long, it will cost you followers.
3. Excellent, HD videos
Before YouTube, Vimeo, and Instagram HD videos were just extra sprinkling on the cake. Now, having high quality video content is a requirement. Video is everywhere. You should really have at least one video that serves as a “commercial” for you - introducing who you are, giving a sample of what you do, and stating where to go to contact you. You should also have video(s) of your performances. Please note, since people are scrolling so quickly through Facebook, shorter videos are better. 25 seconds to 2.5 minutes is the ideal range. Save those longer videos for your website.

4. A Posting Plan
Yes, you need a plan! There’s nothing worse than a page that looks great, but has no content to engage/expand its audience. People will notice if you have a killer set up, but haven’t posted in months. To them, that usually means you have either fallen off the planet or aren’t good enough to have regular activity.
There are some basic guidelines most people follow. It is generally a best practice to post 7-10 times a week. Yes, that is once a day or sometimes twice a day if it is a really exciting day. For sure, you need to post on the weekends at least once. The reason continuous posts are important is because it will allow you to continually show up in your followers’ feeds. The more they see you, the more engaged they become.
5. Remember, Facebook Prioritizes Original Content
The more engaged they are, the more you can encourage them to assist your business goals (buying/advocating/hiring). Another best practice in regards to creating posts: original images and videos show up the most. Facebook has set its algorithm to strongly push original content over sharing content. This means that if you were to upload a video it would get a far larger reach (more people would see it) than if you were to share that same video from someone else’s page.
Keep in mind, too, that Facebook puts priority on Facebook content. If you include links that pull people away from Facebook (to a website or to YouTube), it will get less reach. Most successful social media pages have someone running a calendar behind the scenes. This means plotting out post content for the whole month, running a calendar for social media as seriously as a lessons or performance calendar, and actually creating quality content (taking dynamic photos and recording HD video).
Above is an example of an "original content video." Notice that the video is still a short one - the length is optimized for Facebook.

It is important to remember that, like playing an istrument, learning to run a successful social media marketing campaign requires time, patience, and experimentation. Some people find social media marketing intimidating. They get so scared of “posting bad content” or “doing social media wrong” that they get frozen in their tracks. Being frozen is a surefire way to have bad marketing. Taking chances with the content you post won’t end your career - no one knowing who you are will.

Basically see what they are writing, what type of content is ranking for that keyword (product page, homepage, blog post, youtube video and so on), how many words are on a page.
If you look closely on the screenshot, you can see that the searched keyword is commercial, that means the content that answers to this query should be commercial, too. After a full-size study on the market, you are ready for content optimization.

Content optimization: everybody wants it and needs it, just like a good catch. I think that SEO & content marketing is the perfect marriage. UX is like frosting on the cake. It completes it and makes it more appealing. And easier to digest it.

Technology has definitely changed the art of writing and the means we can use to get our points across. Not so long ago everything involved handwriting (and then typing) a draft, spending hours on revision and proofreading, and eventually submitting a finished text to an editor’s red pen. Thus, doing this kind of work well still takes skills, talent, and perseverance. Luckily for us due to the evolution of technology, everyone with an Android device or access to the internet can get the help needed to write and polish a paper. Whether you’re writing a college paper or the next Great American Novel, there are multiple apps available to help you with the entire process.
1 Take notes
If you’re a writer, you need a note-taking app you can rely on. Thus, you can spend more time brainstorming and less time waiting for inspiration to come. Plus, you can jot down your thoughts on the go.
Evernote
Evernote is one of the most downloaded apps on the Android market. Its logo is an elephant not by chance. This animal is known for a good memory. The app is created for the users not to forget anything important. Hence the symbolism. Evernote allows you capturing, organizing, and storing almost any type of digital note with your phone.
FiiNote
FiiNote is one of the hottest note-taking apps right now. It offers Android users a special feature: combined handwriting and keyboard. You can even paint illustrations! Additional features include voice typing, photo and video support, calendar, alarm and a to-do list.

2 Research
We all got writing assignments in school and college. So, you know the importance of deep and careful research in tailoring an excellent academic paper. It’s no less crucial for nonfiction because the story must be believable. In nonfiction, accurate research can make or break a writer.

The official Wikipedia Android app is designed to help users quickly find and explore information on Wikipedia. You can make a voice-integrated search, create reading lists, see articles related to your GPS location, and more.
Instapaper and Pocket
These apps belong to a “read it later” type. They let you save any stuff you find on the web, from articles to videos, for easy access later. Instapaper and Pocket are similar. So, you’ll have to choose your favorite based on your personal preferences. They both offer a reading mode free of excess ads and images, an offline reading mode, and text-to-speech options.

Typography Logos That You’ll Enjoy Looking At
There is more to creating typography logos than simply thinking of a way to visually identify the brand and the business.
Therefore, your job won’t be done by arranging the business’s name inside a rectangular box.
If you ask an experienced designer or entrepreneur you will always get the same answer – logos have both a visual and a substantial aspect, and they bear the responsibility of shading positive light on your brand and crafting the perception of your customers.

Who are you targeting? You should be familiar with their age, nationality, gender, interests, hobbies, and occupation.
Where will the logo appear? Work with a logo applicable in different scenarios, including billboards, websites, banners, or even T-shirts.
Is your message easy to understand? Think of the first associations that would come to customers’ minds once they give the logo a look. To make sure you comply with their expectations, make a survey and ask for opinions.
Learn the visual basics of typographic logos
Once you’ve gathered all information and familiarized in detail with the potential of your brand, it is time to make the most important choices that will make or break your logo.
First in the line will be fonts, so make sure you know a thing or two about them. The bustling number of available fonts will make it difficult to choose an appropriate one, so spend some time evaluating their effect on your design.
The good news is that all fonts can be categorized in groups, and each of these groups has a different emotional tone:
Serifs: stricter, traditional, official, reliable, trustworthy
Sans Serifs (no serifs): on-point, objective, straightforward, modern.
Script type (used to resemble handwriting): personal, affectionate, creative, elegant
Decorative: unique, creative, expressive
As you can conclude at this point, there is a different story, personality, and mood to each font and you can rely on it to transfer the same emotions to your brand. Depending on your business, you can go for a playful, unofficial, careless, serious, or refined font; giving priority to the spirit and nature of your business, rather than your own preferences.
The message delivered by your font will also depend on the colours you’re using. The same as typefaces, colours and nuances invoke different feelings, so make sure you’re not playing with such that will take a viewer in an undesired direction.
Here are some extra tips that can help you make a professional choice:
Do some research on competitors. What we have in mind here is not to imitate the work they’ve done, but to learn from their experience.
Less is more. The simpler and cleaner your font is, the easier it will be to adjust your typography logo to products in different shapes and sizes, and keep it consistent wherever it appears.
Readability comes first. It makes no sense to use a font readers won’t understand in a matter of seconds.
Create a versatile logo
The best way to go is to design logos using vector applications, among which the compulsory Adobe Illustrator. The program works better than Photoshop as it allows scaling without affecting in anyhow the quality of the logo.
In order to ensure that logotype colours are reproduced identically on printed logos, specify them with pantone or CMYK references.
The logo should remain recognizable even when reproduced in black or white.
The design mistakes you should avoid
Exaggerating with fonts and colours. Looking at the logos of leading companies, you will notice that they only use one colour and a single font. The decision to make a logo like that derives from the need to make the logo look cleaner and more organized. Two fonts will only be accepted when the logo contains a slogan next to the name of the company.
Following trends. Trends won’t be there forever, and you certainly don’t want your popular logo to fall back with them. Therefore, stick to the classics, and choose fonts that are really suitable for your business.
Imitation. Logo design is a creative process, and you shouldn’t get all lazy about it. You’re working on the visual representation of your business, and the less unique you are, the less trustworthy you will be in the eyes of your customers.
The power of the Ampersand
In the corporate world, businesses are often formed from collaborations and partnerships, as a result of which we have a brand with two or more names to include in the logo (H&M, D&G, Smith and Sons, and many more).
Instead of the standard ‘and’, you can always use an ornate, decorative ampersand to make the logo loo more old-fashioned and sophisticated. The larger the ampersand is, the more you’d be highlighting the collaborative spirit in the company, and thus convince future customers that their needs will be handled by an expert and trustworthy team.
Ampersands are quite often for formal businesses in the service arena, including in particular financial and legal consultancies, and academic institutions. Still, this shouldn’t stop you from using them for casual and informal purposes.
Friendly logos with retro typefaces
Businesses have all sorts of design needs and requirements, but most of them would still go for a brand look that is accessible and friendly. Quite often, such logic is adopted even by exclusive and formal sectors that are also looking for a cheerful font that’d support their open-ethos approach.
Such business should consider retro-inspire typefaces, as these are nostalgic and trendy at the same time, and inject a vintage vibe that can make any service seem inviting and attractive.
By retro fonts, we have in mind cheery designs that reference the 1950s style, usually packed with curved types and pastel colour backgrounds. The design should remain flat (no gradients or shades), but yet fresh enough to adhere to today’s design standards.
How to make an iconic typography logo
Nowadays when designers come up with all sorts of amazing image solutions, typography logos are put aside as the ‘duller’ or ‘more boring option’. Yet, we believe that that there are many size and shape adjustments and interesting frames that can make a font look more dynamic and engaging.
What businesses do in such cases is to create icons, namely smaller logo versions for their brand. Icons have proven to be very successful despite of their limited size, usually crafted upon a square layout instead of a rectangular one. The reason why they’re often more memorable than logos is that they display less information (no subtitles, for instance).
If you ran a clothing store, for instance, you can get a memorable icon to print on merchandise tags, ideally designed as a punching and modern symbol that will be noticed despite of its size. To strengthen its effect, you should work with attractive colours and striking contrasts.
In order to create a logo that captures interest wherever it appears (tags, printouts, digital media, shop windows, and so on), set it within a rounded or a square layout. Go for a minimalist solution, and display only the information that is absolutely necessary.
Getting inspired for designing typography logos
Inspiration can come from the least expected sources, but for most of today’s designers it is gathered online. At the very beginning of your search, you can consider looking at the portfolio pages of prominent design companies, and learn more on their colouring, spacing, and typography strategies.
The right idea
The critical step towards a well-executed logo for a client is to know in detail what that client is doing. Therefore, spend time on their website, check out their promotional materials, and you will certainly get inspired.
‘Try out’ your design with a sketch
As soon as the idea and the plan come together, grab a piece of paper, and prepare a sketch. Take into consideration all differences caused by the font you’re about to use.
Choosing colors for typography logos
Two points will be particularly important for you to choose the right color for your typographic logo:
The business category
The business category or industry you operate in is without doubt the leading factor to consider. For a company in the finance and banking sector, for instance, you need a logo whose colours invokes and builds trust.

Kerning upside down
Why does kerning the character pairs upside down make sense? It is because in such way, you get to examine the spacing between letterforms without even reading the words and understanding their meaning. Upside-down kerning may not be an option for fancy and highly-personalized designs, but the technique is proven and more than welcomed in all other scenarios.
Spacing words with an ‘o’
Another concern you will have is spacing before and after the words, and in order to get it right, we recommend you to imagine a letter ‘o’ between the words.

Kerning and tracking will be most useful with headlines, and it is imperative to get them right. Using Sans Serif fonts will be enough to notice all the mistakes you’ve made.
