The hidden loneliness of L, the duplicity of Light

This was entirely out of the blue, but while watching the character analysis of Bruno from Encanto by therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright, I was somewhat taken aback by this set of comments on sequence where Bruno opens up to Mirabel about his apparent loneliness:

JD: But he's so into all this entertainment, the acting for himself, all these habits because he's so alone. AS: Yeah. JD: And when we don't have real connection, we sacrifice — you know, we get really into TV shows, we get really into movies. I mean, even more so than normal, we are out of balance because we don't want to have actual relationships, or we want to and we're not.

It was a coincidental throwback to this quote by Fu Takahashi, who plays L in the 2020 JP musical:

There are cartoon, film, animation and musical versions of “DEATH NOTE”; I think that the character is different in each version and has its own charm. A common thing about L among these versions is that, despite his superficial image as a smart guy who hates losing, he actually feels lonely and needs affection, I imagine. Perhaps he is an orphan – his character suggests so. He tries to control his emotions, like the feelings towards his parents, or romantic feelings; that’s why he is sort of dependent on games or battles of the mind. So I want to play L while thinking about the foundations on which his personality has been formed.

And while L and Bruno's situations are obviously incredibly different in both context and personality, I found it interesting that Jonathan talks about the concept of the identified patient right after; where a couple is on the brink of divorce, a group of friends or work colleagues keep arguing and having problems — there's a decision, whether subconscious or not, that a specific someone is the problem, i.e., the black sheep, and that fixing this person will solve the adjacent problems.

It further reminded me of the way that Light's duplicity throughout the first arc made L the black sheep of the Task Force, as no one wanted to believe for a very long time that he could be Kira. Certainly not while L was alive, as he was often accused of pursuing Light because a) he had no other suspects and b) out of sheer stubbornness.

While L also mused whether his suspicion of Light was also, in part, due to a lack of others who could ascend to the same level of intellect and thus (his own) enjoyment of the game, the result of this duplicity in the psyche of the Task Force becomes even more malicious if we consider what Jonathan says next:

JD: (...) other times we're just going to let this person hold all of it so that we can believe in our own goodness and perfection.

Extrapolating this a bit: the inherent value to this reasoning is not that the Task Force wants to believe in their own goodness and perfection by focusing on Light's innocence; rather, Light wants to be seen as the good, perfect individual and cast on L an easy light (pun intended) of the outsider who clashes with the ethics of honor and professionalism of police officers, in an already strict culture of rigor and normalized behaviors (the hammer and the nail, the nail gets hammered until it fits in); whereas L sticks out like a sore thumb in both appearance and morals.

Decided to actually post this today, but it's going to take a bit to get the page set up on my blog.

Some definitions I will be using, and with permission from @onlyheartaches:

Mains - Your muse is the default when being referenced in threads. Example: X's Lucifer is the one I reference in my threads. Affiliates - Your muse's blog and canons has extensive ties to my muse's canon. Example: X's Stella is the Stella for my Andre and both share the same/similar plot canon to our respective blogs. Ship Exclusives - This means that your muse will be the only one I ship with. This is also the section for my ship partners! Example: @stolsas will be the ONLY Stolas I romantically ship with Andre.

Now there can/will be some overlap with these since this is new to me and I'm still hammering out the specifics. I also write a lot with duplicates but there will be some who are my mains/affiliates over others.

Was musing on my twelve Kwami & Six-Teen Heroes lore and ideas again and musing on the secondary/alt power names and works.

What I mean is, that Mullo the mouse is both multiplication & Duplication, or how Wayss the turtle can create shields of all types, but also reinforce their user or others for endurance ETC.

Some like dragon are already set, and others like horse just need minor tweaks, like multiple single teleportation's or one big portal plus mildly enhanced speed, Fox can create illusions but also affect the mind with hallucinations.

I have had some toruble with the other three though and was curious as yo your thoughts, no pressure though but here:

Bee is still order & Subjegation.

Venom can sting 1 foe for five minutes or five foes for 1 minute and lock them down. Or otherwise steadily force their body to stop fighting the more she stings them, stacking like a debuff.

The other idea was for there to be a "Compel" thing which meant Chloe could order objects she had stung to obey, like stinging a truck and ordering it to drive at her foe.

Not sure it works though & so I was thinking of maybe she can use Order for a sort of discount Miracle Cure, like restoring a damaged building?

Second Chance is as usually adjusted it, has less repeats and everyone starts getting deja-vu. The other ideas were a sort of instinctive premonition of upcoming events, or being able to slow one's perception of time, or perhaps a song? But not feel quite right & Second Chance is already quite OP.

There is a third, but I am pretty pleased with it but thought you might find it interesting:

Clash & Erupt is the battle cry. Summoning with it violet claws that look like fire akin to this but smaller:

The two distinct attacks both involve striking the enemy.

Claws ignite! Unleashes a powerful, fiery blast as one strikes, causing a large blast of fire in the shape of claws.

Cry Havoc! Relies on burying the claws in the foe, & them being absorbed sending the foe's body haywire.

Unlike most other powers these one's are extremely hard to use in minor ways, leaving Juleka/Tiger as a major heavy hitter, but also one that needs to be used well.

Though she can also turn the claws on and use them as a default weapon but I imagine the longer one does so the more unstable they become and or the user becomes.

I will say that the 'Order' power reminds me of Star and Stripe's power, New Order.

I see people asking a lot about affiliates and if anyone wants to be affiliates and figured I'd just make a post. I know people use terms interchangably but they're not actually interchangable. The terms refer to specific things and I think a lot of people are new to the Tumblr rpc and just making guesses on how things work based on what they're seeing. There's also less rp helper blogs in general so some of this stuff fell out of common knowledge / people don't have the context on why the terms are such.

Mains: people you prioritize when doing replies. This is usually discussed between muns, and often is something that develops naturally. Sometimes they may be referenced in other replies or asks but not always.

Exclusive: I will only write that character with you. So it would be like me, an Alastor, only interacted with one Vox blog and did not interact with other Vox. As with mains, it's usually something discussed between muns and develops naturally.

Affiliates: a closed rp group. These are NOT mains but it's what people often get it mixed up with. Affiliates means that you are sharing your main verse with this group. That the events that happen on their blogs influence your own and vice versa. That these other blogs are INTEGRAL to your blog's main verse. That when you get an ask about a character, you will reply referencing the blog within the group. The term is from when there were two kinds of blogs in the rpc community, independent and affiliated. Affiliated blogs went down in popularity as Discord rose, since the groups just moved to servers instead. Generally to get on with an affiliated group you have to apply, and keep up a level of activity. There are often events for only that group, and they don't often allow duplicates.

Bonus:

Group verse: the independent's answer to affiliates. This may or may not be closed. An example of a closed verse would be the war on heaven one that I think cast-you-dxwn and hellsirenqueen are running. Single muse slots, by invitation only not everyone can participate. An example of an open one would be staticintone's RAM one. A group verse may or may not be the blog's main verse, and is usually only listed on their verses page and tagged with the verse tag when used.

Even if people don't quite know the reasoning for it, labeling people as affiliates when you mean mains tends to ostracize since the assumption is 'oh they they are already rping with my character, no point in interacting'. If that's your intent with affiliates, go for it. Otherwise maybe rethink the terminology you're using. As writers, we know how important word choice and accuracy is. Hopefully having a little context helps!

About duplicates — this is something I feel I should formally address as I see it in so many rules, but I've never had the thought to establish as a rule myself: I love duplicates!

For some unnecessary context, I come from a fandom where it's incredibly commonplace to see multiple alternates of a muse in one space and even see them interact with each other — at one point, there was even a collective of at least four alternates of one character that were friendly with each other and regularly interacted at the same time (and I recall more than 9 fairly active ones total, across the history of my time rping in that fandom). Multiverse interaction is widely embraced and more or less learned and encouraged from the get go in that fandom, and any rules on duplicates are nonexistent, so it is by habit that I tend to assume the same in other spaces, which is my mistake! I'm not used to people being strict or openly nervous about duplicates, and this did at some point extend to exclusives as well.

All that aside, now for the important part: what does this mean for my blog?

I openly encourage and am very comfortable with duplicates. I am also very willing to have duplicates interact, particularly for Stelle! I think there's a lot of very fun potential to be explored there. Due to the inherent multiversal nature of HSR, as a general rule my HSR muses are aware of the multiverse (except Gepard, because of Belobog's isolation from the galaxies) and will react accordingly. You will not see any (again, bar Gepard) surprised by another version of themself.

For Stelle in particular: there is only one Caelus that she will consider a twin ( @celestial-narwhal ), due to the nature of our established verse. Furthermore, any other Trailblazers regardless of gender will be treated as an alternate of herself by default, unless prior discussion between you and myself establishes otherwise. If you are not Starry, do not ask me to establish a twin dynamic with you! Platonic bonds otherwise are fine; I'm very open to Stelle being close to an alternate of herself. She may still bring up her Caelus in conversation with a Caelus duplicate, but only if you, the mun, are fine with that (I will check with you first!).

17. fanon interpretations ;) enjoy

Fanon interpretations my beloathed.

Don't get me wrong, there are some fanon interpretations that really can hit the mark, or do seem plausible and can be enjoyed as with everything, however my biggest bugbear with fanon interpretations is how often they become the expectation on muses. I think its important to take a step back when dealing with a muse particularly susceptible to them to consider what is actually canon and what is fanon. It can be extremely frustrating when you don't agree with fanon to have those interpretations forced upon you, and having to navigate that and explain.

As with all things I think it comes down to respect and dialogue. If you have particularly fanon interpretations you don't like, be vocal about it, whether that's in plotting messages or in headcanons or on dash. If someone assumes, correct them politely, and if you made the assumption be willing to deal with it and take a step back. It's okay to not agree and maybe that means going to find a different writing partner who will share your views, but in the end if you want to stick with your writing partner, you do need to offer respect to their interpretation and not impress your views of their muse on them. Particularly with duplicates. The beauty of interpretation is that we all have our nuance and takes, and we all create a picture of these muses, resonating with different things about them and that's brilliant.

Anyway tl;dr leave the fanon takes at the door and go in ready to listen to what your writing partner sees about their muse, and if that doesn't resonate, its okay to say. If you need clarification ask, and if someone's assumed something you don't like, talk about it.

I've said this about a previous fandom of mine, but it's been about a year since I first entered this one with Guizhong (originally on my multi for about a month), and it's been nothing short of my best and genuinely most peaceful experience in many years. Usually I see fandom problems arise well before the one-year mark, but here it's been quite calm and also, the closest to feeling that old 'community' concept again. We're all here to have a good time, we engage across the board pretty well, and it's just, it's been really nice. I struggled immensely to be on Tumblr for a good two years prior to coming here, despite the best efforts of friends, and I think it's simply because no fandom has quite felt like this one. None of them ever really succeeded in giving me what this one has. You guys are magnificent, never change.

𝐑𝐏 𝐏𝐄𝐓 𝐏𝐄𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐒: You've called salt into your life with this one, be ready: this trend of privately or publicly guilt-tripping people into interacting with them ('I guess no one's interested...' or 'guess I'll go then...') or even for interacting with duplicates of their muse instead. This should never be a thing I'll cut people like that out of my life and off my dashboard as quickly as I breathe for guilting, and I’ll always motivate people to do the same. There is nothing healthy, remotely positive or forgivable about that kind of behavior, but I see it happening very often still. Are people not interacting with you? Go after them with all the fire of motivation that you possess, and if you don’t have that? Then the muse you have before you may not the one for you. Honestly, I think it's just that if you have passion for your muse, then you won’t let yourself get demotivated, you won’t let things hold you back, because you’ll have a spirit that can’t really be quelled in any capacity. Are duplicates intimidating? Then either find your way to shy away from them or let that insecurity drive you; let it make you better, let it drive you to improve (mentally). I’m not saying anyone who experiences insecurity is a lesser writer, not by any means— but let it make you even better than you already are.

𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐒: I find myself drawn to specific elements or concepts within humanity (or in Guizhong's case, the exact opposite) that are either unusual among the status quo or intriguing.to me personally. I do know that I've always rather fiercely tried to avoid characters that are very reminiscent of me as an individual. Though on some level, there is usually a trait that I understand on a fundamental level in some way or another, the nature in which it's presented is usually simply is different, however. So for example with Yelan, I can talk about this inherent concept of loneliness that is incredibly different from what we consider to be the norm, I've understood the concept incredibly well throughout various parts of my life, but never in the way that it was presented with her whatsoever. And in terms of Guizhong, it's her curiosity to figure everything out, but as a god who by default, does not function in a similar capacity to mortals whatsoever, it's incredibly interesting (and different) for me to see. 𝐏𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒 𝐎𝐑 𝐌𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐒: The former, but the latter usually will also either be based on a mentioned plot, or I'll turn it into a plot! 𝐋𝐎𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐑 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐑𝐓 𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐋𝐈𝐄𝐒: I always inevitably end up getting wordy, but I can start shorter as to establish a sort of writing comfort and/or flow with the other person, especially if you're a new RP partner of mine. reblog karma to me is a myth. tumblr notifications are always fucked up so like, its really whatever. you're gonna lose track of things regardless. yall need to remember this is NOT a roleplaying site meant FOR roleplay. it is BLOGGING site meant for BLOGGING. as great as it is to roleplay, we got this notion that we are the only ones that matter and somehow we earned the right to dictate what people are allowed and not allowed to do when it comes to certain types of blogs?? the entitlement is crazy.

duplicates are the same way. its a you problem. everyone writes their muse differently. If you got an issue with someone writing the same muse as you, because GUESS WHAT no one is original, you're bound to have similar thoughts and headcanons that doesnt mean someone is copying you or trying to steal from you. odds are, you think the same and hey , thats stuff to bond over. I love duplicates love writing threads with twins, love LOVING the same character with other people who love loving the character. its all to protect ya'lls insecurities and you mask it by making it seem like its some kind of etiquette.

#FFxivWrite2024 - Day 16: Third-rate

Emet-Selch and Hythlodaeus were taking a quick break, the former nursing a growing headache, and the latter lost in thought. Hermes required time alone to gather himself. And much to Emet-Selch’s relief, Azem’s vexing familiar was off somewhere with Hermes’ latest pet project. Hopefully they were keeping each other out of trouble—or at least entertained. It left the two envoys from Amaurot some time to take a breather and consider what all they had seen.

Interviewing and assessing the potential new Fandaniel was never going to be the easiest of errands, Emet-Selch thought, but it was certainly never supposed to be this frustrating .

That Emet-Selch’s patience was being stretched thin was evidenced by his increasing irritation at the creatures meandering Elpis’s fields. He stopped in his tracks, agog, as one especially peculiar creation tottered by—it looked like a ball of moss, but with a beak, and a small puddle of water balanced precariously on a leaf above its head.

“What is that? ” he asked.

“Charming, isn’t it?” Hythlodaeus smiled.

“Do not tell me you approved this concept.”

Hythlodaeus chuckled. “‘Tis the only way it would appear on this isle, my dear friend. Unless you suppose it has spontaneously popped into being. Now, wouldn’t that be exciting?”

“You know what I mean,” Emet-Selch scowled. “First the ambystoma, and now this? What even is the point of it?”

“... ‘Point?’” Hythlodaeus asked innocently.

“Yes, point . Purpose. Reason for existence. Need I elaborate further?” Emet-Selch folded his arms and frowned. “I cannot fathom why, when we have geniuses on our star of the caliber of Lahabrea, turning out concepts as awe-inspiring as Ifrita, you are also simultaneously approving things like… like… a sentient marimo on tiptoe.”

“Oh, come now. The creature is harmless.”

Emet-Selch sighed loudly. “Harmless it may be, but what good does it do? Why bother with it at all?”

“A strange question,” Hythlodaeus mused. “Should it not be sufficient that ‘the point’ is that it is pleasing? It is proving a real conversation-starter, at the very least.”

Emet-Selch’s eyes flashed slightly. “I swear, it seems like you will just let absolutely anyone with delusions of competence submit a concept to your desk.”

“That is more or less the shape of things, yes.”

“And evidently you never fail to approve their applications.”

“Oh, you are mistaken ,” Hythlodaues laughed. “I do. Do I ever . The rejection file is… quite substantial. And entertaining.”

“Based on WHAT?” Emet-Selch demanded, gesturing accusingly at the leafy creature once more.

Hythlodaeus lit up at the subject and began counting the reasons off on his fingers. “Being too near to a duplication of a previously approved concept, for one. Or if it has gaping holes in the idea—crucial details that have been left too vague to bring into realization. For sentient beings, we reject anything that has a design flaw fundamentally incompatible with life. Or if it poses an obvious and insurmountable threat to other established beings of the star. That sort of thing.”

“Honestly. Have you never considered how much more streamlined things could be at your office if you employed a roster of people who actually proved that they knew what they’re doing? Those with a history of work that shows they grasp the fundamentals of both aesthetics and practicality?”

Hythlodaeus grinned. “My, that is an idea. Such wisdom simply proves why it was only right that you should be elevated to the Convocation, and I should maintain my humble post at the Bureau.”

“As you will, then,” Emet-Selch said begrudgingly. “Just don’t come crying to me when your submissions file is overflowing with inane nonsense.”

“Duly noted,” Hythlodaeus replied.
