I think it's so interesting that Neve talks about wanting to "follow through" on a case and prove herself trustworthy. It makes it sound like she (a) doesn't solve a lot of cases, (b) solves cases and then they fall apart because of corruption, or (c) has a hard time seeing "small" victories as "real." She feeds and houses the homeless, makes sure vendors can pay bills, makes sure customers aren't swindled, always sides with the "good" people in a situation, and is seen as a force of good in Docktown. Still, she doesn't see herself as having accomplished anything. It's such a nuanced take for a detective whose whole thing is being really good at her job. She takes comfort in helping every day people, but also can't see that as doing Actual Good.

gah I can just imagine Neve somehow throwing herself more into work when she starts to fall for Rook, just working late into the night cause her mind keeps wandering back to Rook whenever she closes her eyes

speaking of veilguard kind of going nowhere. i am so mad over there being no in depth epilogue. at least tell me what happens to the factions that are being led/guided by people rook influenced !!!!!! all these companions have obvious obligations outside of the veilguard, and they're all dedicated to the lives they lived before they joined this team, so of course they would go back. what effect did bellara deciding to keep the archive have on the elves? neve decides to protect dock town by any means necessary, so what does that mean for a blighted minrathous? everything to do with harding and the titans ????!!!! and solas just accepts being trapped because he's been 'outplayed' DO NOT MAKE ME LAUGH!!!! somebody has got to tell me what happens after the world gets 'saved' because the south in chaos, minrathous almost destroyed and the last of the elven gods being dead is like. crazy. and the companions just commenting things i already know is really not cutting it for me

You've chosen Neve to take down the wards. "Let's walk out careful. The gods will have a trap or two."

I like how he doesn't beat around the bush here. Neve teases him a bit, telling him, "Rook's good for you," because she's caught him smiling to himself, and not for the first time, it sounds like, and he doesn't hesitate for a second to say, "Yeah, true."

ok actually not deranged this time; neve is probably my fav character in VG just in general bc her dichotomy between being emotionally distant and repressed as a coping mechanism contrasted with her obvious sentimentality behind all that cold rigidity and how no matter the fronts she puts up or how she tries to present herself she without fail still gets deeply attached to people and things and places so, so, so deeply bc neve at her core cares so much abt the things she loves even as she tries to push them away to protect herself, bc being distant means you stop caring and though it would be so much easier to slide into apathy neve can't, she can't stop getting attached to people and holding onto things no matter how many times the things she loves shatter and slip through her fingers and cut her open on the way down bc not caring would be utterly antithetical to who she is
she is a pessimistic idealist desperate to hold onto the things she loves no matter how much her fingers bleed, no matter how much she tells herself it's better that she doesn't, trying to convince herself that she isn't clinging onto the edges of it with all the strength she has
like one of her earliest scenes is her talking about how she lost a friend to a job and clearly still feels terrible abt it but still kept a keepsake close bc she still cares so, so, so much, and that one scene informs her character for the rest of the game as she talks about how much Minrathous beats her down day by day and how much she feels like nothing she does matters even on the small scale and how ‘taking the little wins’ starts to feel hopeless, and how despite herself she still gets attached to people in the lighthouse like bellara and assan and manfred and potentially lucanis or rook who she gives an affectionate nickname, and is obviously devastated if she loses any of them (especially on a treviso run). neve gallus the woman that you are

Hearing Neve's pain riddled "no." and nearly crying when she talks about the people she recognizes after Minrathous is blighted, and the Venatori now rule, and all of their progress was thrown back CENTURIES, I'm just imagining her horror, as you take her by the CARTS and CARTS of bodies, and the people hanged and left out to rot...
Imagine for me, since I am writing this now, the horror on her face as she goes quiet. This woman, who was happily chatting in the middle of the public to every single person that passed her, now has her eyes darting left and right. Yes, these people are faceless to you, Rook, with their masks on. But to her, they are names, people, people with families and stories, that she all knows and knows personally.
People that she's shared plights with, stories, drinks, people she's helped, people that aren't even shadow dragons that she knows that were entirely innocent and under their protection, young adults with dreams, vendors, and all those in between who are just people - good, people. HER people, in HER city, And after a while there's muttering like,
"No.. No, no, Diana, oh Martin.. Mabel.. Octavia..Magnus.. Oliver.." to herself, quietly, as she goes through this ENDLESS list of names and then..
Suddenly Neve is walking away from the party quickly to a nearby alley, to which she starts heaving. A hand on the wall, leaning over, and if you try to walk up to her to put a hand on her shoulder she will jerk away and tell you to not touch her, leave and just ... go. Just go.

i'm for sure not finishing veilguard. i set it down a while and tried again and ahh i'm just not enjoying it. the characters dont have a depth im looking for.. the insertion of a writer's white guilt onto the elves that are based on real life indigenous people and have been in-games enslaved and treated horrifically and are the ones who don't have "real" gods that are actually just blighted tyrants. everything with taash and the qunari. the gameplay was fun for a while but then it made my hand so numb i couldnt do anything for a week. the last straw was taash's gender talk that suddenly turned into picking a cultural identity for them to align with out of nowhere and then soon after learning that Another antagonist is of course an elf. starting to feel like their implying that all elves become evil when given power jfc. i think i'm actually done with it it started making me feel gross and bored. i don't care if you enjoy it or not, everyone's got a different threshold it just crossed mine.
#i wish i'd told my brother to not get it for me but he was so excited to get me a gift. i would have rather pirated it#i wanted to be hopeful they'd have made more strides since dai since it had seemed to be getting better ish.#but the bioware team clearly don't think mulicultural people are 'true to themselves' or that arab people are well. People.#or that anyone could enjoy and align with the religion that is heavily modeled after islam. ofc it's just stifling and constraining right.#everyone who follows it is evil and awful and the fucking. blighted qunari turning into literal giant monsters when nobody else is affected#like that. what the Fuck.#how did it get More racist than dragon age 2.#anyway. long chatter short i think my final personal onion is that i do not like the game and i kind of wish it didnt exist. thumbs up#there's cool concepts in there but.. the racism got Worse. the established lore was tossed out the window. the music is forgettable.#the pacing is off. the therapy talk gets annoying after a while. my favorite things are: davrin and assan. davrin is so funny also his bo#also neve. i love neve i wish her story was more..... More. i like that she got upset at her city being destroyed even though she didnt#want to blame my character she couldnt help herself from blaming him. mixed feelings on how gender is incorporated. could be better but it'#good for a triple a game. wish they used the established in-universe terms for being trans but eh.#i wish the world wasn't so sanititized down. it feels like a desire for everything to be 'good' and perfect but it makes it feel hollow#and like a kind of immature unwillingness to tackle hard subjects but well. that's a running theme of the lead writer of this game lmao

Find it so interesting that the game makes a point of telling us several times that Neve is familiar with blood magic. Enough that she can try to undo it, that she can sense it. Makes me wonder if she's ever had to use it in a desperate time. How much is observation? How much is practical experience?
With making her father a Templar I will have that a lot of her education regarding blood magic and how to counter it is from him. That isn't the full extent of it, though. Might be interesting to play around with what is considered an acceptable use of blood magic or not.
Was reading on the wiki page that blood magic practice with your own blood or freely given blood is technically legal. Has Neve ever had to...?
