He...supposed Diarmuid had a point. If he had been found unsuitable, he likely would not still be in the employ of the church. The Knights of Seiros operated on a much less personal scale than Harken was used to; both in Tuscana and Pherae, while there had always been a fighting force of knights, they were rather small compared to Garreg Mach.
"That is...an optimistic outlook to have. I shall try to keep it in mind, until I am given reason to believe otherwise."
Until he is formally dismissed, Harken would always strive to do what he could. Even if he thought his efforts could always be improved in some way, or were lesser than what others had to offer, he would still do what he could to serve.
Less formally than this...It was an interesting response, and not entirely what Harken was expecting.
"I see. Well, the knights here at Garreg Mach operate under the church. Where the church believes we will do the most good, that is where we go," Harken begins to explain, "Most often, we remain here; we guard and patrol the monastery and the town. We aid in various missions -- some of which the students at the academy also take part in -- which can sometimes bring us outside of Garreg Mach and into the borders of the Adrestrian Empire, the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and the Leicester Alliance."
"We are primarily a military force, whether defending the monastery or going out to help quell issues across Fodlan. But, if you feel you have enough experience with a certain subject, I know there are a few knights that also help with some of the academy classes, if that interests you."

It seemed as if people were always coming and going between students, staff and knights. It was quite different to what he was used to back in Elibe. Knights didn't go from place to place very often, they served their lords for as long as they could. Garreg Mach had the odd but unique situation of having people come from all over to learn or advance their own experience, and then filter out back to their homelands.
It was a constant flow of change.
Today was no different. Harken had risen with the sun, as he usually did; broken his fast, checked his gear and gotten properly dressed, and then began his routine. Light training to get warmed up, and then returning to the barracks to see what was on the agenda for the Knights of Seiros that day.
He was expecting something along the lines of helping with patrols or seeing if any of the mission requests needed more hands, but it turned out to be a new recruit that greeted him.
"Ah, good morning, Lord Diarmuid," Harken returned in kind, though his tone is nowhere near as bright and cheery as the younger man in front of him. He seemed quite earnest, which was certainly good to have when you choose to serve. "No, no -- I have time. I've not yet been assigned to anything today, so I've no qualms about doing what I can to bring you up to speed here."
Though why he'd been handed off to Harken was a bit of a mystery to him. Surely there was someone better equipped for Diarmuid to learn from?
But, that was hardly his place to object.
"Have you served as a knight before, or a soldier, perhaps?" Harken asked, figuring a good place to start would be to know what the other was familiar with. "I can give you a basic rundown of the general routines, give you what advice I may, but I must...be frank with you, young lord. I am not...held in high esteem as it were, and though I will do my utmost to aid you in settling in here, I may not be the best choice. Should you find another that suits you better, I will take no offense in being replaced."
