josuke’s   whining   registers as a mild sound ;   no more offensive than birds chattering in the vicinity of his window   just before   a five - thirty alarm blares through his repose   ━━━━   inconvenient ,   but not maddeningly so .   or it could be that okuyasu is just too soft ,   especially when it comes to his dearest friend ,   but confronting the likelihood of that can be saved for another day .   now ,   he only tongues the inside of his cheek ,   traces of   amusement   mellowing his characteristically   intimidating features .

    “   yer such a damn brat ,   ”   he utters off - handedly ,   shoulders bowing in a show of   blissful relaxation   as tanned hands slip into his pockets .   “   ya manage to get yer ass up for school every day ,   don’tcha ??   i know it’s sunday ,   but this shouldn’t be any different .   plus ,   it’s waaaaay more important .   ”

    high in the amberish sky ,   the   early morning sun   greets them amid a cluster of cotton - candy clouds ;   light filtering through   pearly wisps   &   stretching out to beam over any exposed skin in a warm caress .   ’tis a sight   &   sensation okuyasu knows intimately ,   often rising early to look after his father   &   maintain some grounding presence of order in their healing home .  

    cheesy as it is to say ,   it’s a damn beautiful day .   the kind he’s learned not to take for granted .   “   don’t cop an attitude w’th me just ’cause ya stayed up all night watchin’   the matrix   fer the millionth time when y’knew we had plans ,   ”   says okuyasu ,   withdrawing one of his hands from his pockets only to tauntingly   wag a finger   in josuke’s direction .   “   i told ya th’ only way we can even   dream   of gettin’ a copy is if we’re at the game store the second the doors open .   i wouldn’t be surprised ’f there was a line already ,   ”   he sighs ,   reaching out to take his friend by the wrist ,   encouraging him to shed his   grogginess   like a lizard’s skin .   

    “   now quit bein’ a baby ,   josuke !!   we’re on a   mission   here .   ”

calloused fists   plunge further into the depths of okuyasu’s pockets ,   double - belted trousers clinging tighter to his hips with the additional weight as he saunters through the courtyard .   he’s uncharacteristically alone ;   koichi had promised yukako a little more of his time before the reprieve from the   late summer rain   vanishes as swiftly as it had come ,   &   josuke is still a full - time patient at the hospital   ━━━━   &   okuyasu’s concern for his well - being ,   even if his recovery has gone nigh on   unthinkably well   up to this point ,   occupies every corner of his mind .   what’s the point of having a stand that can fix anything ,   heal any wound ,    if it can’t be used for your own sake ??  

    as nonsensical   (   &   even   unfortunate   )   as it seems ,   okuyasu understands completely .   kakyoin - san had once told them something about stands representing facets of their users ,   holding a mirror up to parts of them even   they   may not yet recognize ,   &   if that’s really true   (   why wouldn’t it be ??   kakyoin - san knows   everything   about stands   ) ,   it makes sense that crazy diamond’s miraculous touch doesn’t work on josuke .   he’s always thinking about others   &   never himself ,   always putting those he loves first ,   even if it inconveniences or   harms   him directly .   as admirable a trait as that is ,   it drives okuyasu   crazy   sometimes ;   if josuke is taking care of everyone ,   who the fuck is taking care of josuke ??  

    normally ,   he’d make a beeline for the hospital as soon as classes dismissed for the day   (   &   sometimes he leaves   a bit early ,   sure ,   but the agonizing drag   of his statistics class pales in importance when compared to being there for his dearest friend   ) ,   but tomoko - san had let him know that josuke is scheduled for another surgery ,   meaning he won’t be allowed to receive visitors until late into the evening .   thus ,   with koichi occupied   &   his routine compromised ,   okuyasu idly considers ways to fill the time   ━━━━   surely dad needs help with something ,   he always does ,   but as doglike as his concept of time can be ,   he knows not to expect okuyasu back so early in the day .   well ,   as shitty as today’s been ,   stopping for some ice cream definitely couldn’t hurt   [   . . .   ]

    “   ouh ??   ”   the vocalization comes in response to a sudden   call of his name ,   &   swiftly ,   okuyasu turns a scarred face toward the direction from which the   familiar voice   had come .   “   oh ,   hachi - chan !!   ”   he greets ,   fragmented brows lifting toward his hairline .   “   [   . . .   ]   hah ??   ”   her question takes him by surprise ,   until he remembers the   scrapes   &   bruises constellating the left side of his face ,   &   the  shit job  koichi had done of setting his nose back into place in the boys��� bathroom .   

    despite now being a stand user ,   okuyasu’s first instinct when launching himself into a fight is not always to call forth   the hand   for assistance   ━━━━   &   though it surely would have made   quicker work   of the punks he caught spreading unsavory rumors about josuke in his absence ,   it wouldn’t have been fair to unleash an   otherworldly power   on average ,   loose - lipped upperclassmen .   either way ,   he held his own just fine .   he’s been fighting all his goddamn life .

    “   nah ,   ’m fine .   you sh’uld see the other guys ,   ”   he snickers ,   a crooked grin stretching tanned lips ,   emphasizing the   blood   that’s dried over a cut from one of his adversaries’   rings .   “   my nose ’s kinda busted ,   though ,   but it’ll heal up just fine .   most important thing’s that i taught those assholes a lesson .   ”   the pride strung across his features   rounds with curiosity   as he considers that hachi had somehow caught word of the altercation   [   . . .   ]   or maybe she hadn’t ,   &   okuyasu just looks   a lot worse   than he thinks he does .   

    “   what d’ya sound so worried for ,   hachi - chan ??   you gotta know i been through worse ’n this ,   ”   says okuyasu ,   attempting to mitigate the pure anxiety radiating from his classmate .   “   if ya think my face is gonna look   even more   fucked up ,   i doubt it .   ”
