Sense8 AU is an old Dragon Age WIP I recently dusted off! More about it here

Werewolf ZYL was a WIP I started for the Wishlist 2023 event actually! I just didn't manage to finish it anywhere approaching the deadline, so it's been lingering in my works pile since.

The idea is that this is a shifter au, with Da Qing as a cat shifter and Zhu Hong as a snake shifter. And ZYL pretends to be a wolf shifter who is just a bit shaky on his control - but the truth is he was bitten by a werewolf as a teen and doesn't have control over what triggers his transformation (like the full moon). Chu Shuzhi should also be Something, possibly some sort of magic user, I haven't quite decided.

My major stumbling block right now is that I keep waffling over what to turn Shen Wei into. I feel like dragon would make the most sense, but it feels wrong somehow? Like it doesn't quite fit the vibe, idk.

I also don't really have a plot yet, just vibes. Feels like this would be perfect for a casefic or case lite to explore the worldbuilding, but I haven't had that light bulb moment of inspiration yet.

Hi, might be a silly question but I just wanted to check, if I've used a bonus prompt to swap out a prompt on my card will that still count towards the 5 bonus fills or not?

Not a silly question at all! As this is meant to be a low-stress fest, you can absolutely use a bonus prompt fill to swap a prompt on your card AND still count it toward the 5 bonus fills for the Merit Brush badge. Happy creating!

Anything I want: Right now?  I’m working on a REALLY impressive weather headache and I would like it to stop.  I would also really appreciate it if my cat would decide whether he wants to be diabetic or not.  And either way, if we could go back to “I will calmly let you poke my ears to get blood glucose readings” instead of “no mooooooooooom. DON’T TOUCH MY EARS.  I AM GOING TO FIDGET.” then that would be GREAT.  (I REALLY don’t like giving insulin blind.  😭)

2. Where do you get your fic ideas?

Inspiration strikes in different ways! Sometimes I'm just doing manual labour (or am showering because shower thoughts are the best times for fic ideas), sometimes I'm daydreaming before sleeping just spinning narratives I'm interested in. Sometimes I read a fic and expect the premise to go a certain way, before it veers of in a completely different direction, but that spark of Scene I saw coming keeps niggling in my brain until I figure out a whole new scenario to make it happen. Sometimes it's by chatting with others, rewatching certain scenes of the show, or really just. Out in the wild stuff, like watching an unrelated movie and talking to coworkers about A Thing that happened, and my brain goes Oh! This would make for a great fic moment.

And then I throw it into the ever-growing list of WIP ideas, and if it really bites I'm gonna write it sooner rather than later.

37. What fic has been the hardest for you to write?

Within Guardian? Long Night In Longcheng (dragon smut), probably. I had to cut out and rewrite so many bits of it until I threw my hands up, cut out most of it, dumped it into my snippets collection on Ao3, and rewrote almost all of the worldbuilding set-up. Conversely, the smut in What Lies In Darkness gave me more trouble while the worldbuilding just flowed, for whatever reason ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Outside of Guardian, there were a few, but the one I remember most vividly is Triple Duke Coup because I tried hard but my motivation absolutely just. Ran out. And I still feel guilty for not finishing it, especially for the people who turned up to support the fic. It was just bad times all around.

77. Why do you enjoy writing fanfiction?

I like sharing my ideas with fandom! The community aspect is really what tickles me, I think. Writing itself is fun, yes, but the sharing part is where I get all the happy validating emotions. But I also straight up like going back to reread my own stories, because they're things I Wanted To Read but weren't available in This Precise Form so I Had To Do It Myself :D

Real talk, I was pretty deep into my depression when I started writing more and getting that positive attention and feeling of community helped me rebuild myself. It also made me awkwardly codependant on feedback for a bit there, and I'm not sure I was in the best headspace towards the end of my last fandom or the year or so before that. I put a lot more stock in getting comments than in friendship for a bit there, and I'm sorry to anyone I put through that.

I'm glad I managed to move on from that. I think my relationship with fanfic and writing is much healthier now - definitely more self-indulgent!

Fest Recap

It's hard to believe it's been TWO YEARS since Guardian Bingo launched. In that time, we issued 138 cards and more than 100 badges. There are 456 works in the AO3 collection and many other posts on tumblr with art, edits, meta, fanARTifacts, and other creations. While it's now time to say goodbye (at least for this fest - the story will keep on going), I didn't want to leave without recognizing the people who made this fest so amazing. First, a HUGE thanks to @highlynerdy, who created all of the gorgeous fest graphics (banner, icon, cards, and badges) and @sasamelons, who provided invaluable help with initial prompts and then supplied each month's bonus prompt. Without them, this fest wouldn't have happened. They have been awesome co-mods!!! Second, a massive thank you to everyone who participated!!!! It's been so great to see all the amazing creations that the prompts inspired. Guardian fandom, you are truly talented!!! To celebrate everyone's creations, I'm loading the queue with reblogs of fills from the past two years.

not sure if this is a genuine question, but if you mean the little rectangles, they're pretty easy. quite genuinely just made a new layer, selected a rectangle, filled in that rectangle with a brush (colors eyedroppered from the gif), set it to the Color layer mode, and then right clicked the layer > blending options > Stroke > 2px white. discarded lots of gif options bc the colors weren't fun enough though

20. Do you prefer writing AUs or canon fics?

Ngl, before coming to Guardian I would've probably said AUs! :D and I still love Canon AUs, or AUs that reimagine canon with Something Extra (like e.g. my vampire!Shen Wei AU or the eldritch horror AU). I guess it depends on what canon has to offer? Guardian offers me everything I want, and it's very easy to add the spices I might crave on.

And I've always been very into the What If? style of fanfiction, which we know call canon divergence. Time travel fix-its, too!

47. Is there a trope that you’ve written before but are now sick of?

I... honestly can't think of one? 😅 I've matured in some tropes (like, as a teen I was very into the toxic relationship whump with a side of woobie redeeming the abuser - this has grown into OP protective boyfriend shielding his normie boyfriend. Not necessarily a healthy relationship dynamic, but dropping the extreme abuse-whump and more having the threat come from the outside.) but I can't think of something I was into that I'm no longer in some capacity?

71. Do you spend more time reading or writing?

Right now, reading 😂 which is actually rare for me! but I blame it on catching colds for the third month in a row at work and my brain thus being to bleh to actually get creative. If I have the choice, I'll usually go for writing!
