Spike Lee’s motion picture, Malcolm X, staring Denzel Washington as Malcolm X, opened to a nationwide audience on this date November 18, 1992.

Malcolm X is a masterpiece, plain and simple. It represents Spike Lee’s apex as a filmmaker, the peak for Denzel Washington as an actor, and the career highlight for the rest of the actors and artists involved.

Today We Celebrate History Made In Brooklyn

The County Of Kings: the first every celebration of three generations of artist, from Brooklyn, was on display this past weekend (October 7 and 8, 2023) on Eastern Parkway.

Renowned documentarian photographer Jamel Shabazz @jamelshabazz exhibit Faces and Places 1980 - 2023, opened this summer at the Brooklyn Museum on June 2 thru October 8, 2023. Photographs capturing four decades of the vibrant people and places of Brooklyn and other locales, were displayed alongside the Brooklyn Museum’s walls and steps, celebrating the borough, and the work of Jamel Shabazz.

What followed next was the Jay-Z @jayz exhibit The Book of Hov: A celebration of the life and work of Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter. The exhibit opened July 14 thru December 4, 2023, at the Brooklyn Public Library. Featuring never-before-seen images, and art collections from Jay-Z. The first ever done at a open public library.

Closing out the year, and into the new, is Spike Lee’s @officialspikelee exhibit Creative Source at the Brooklyn Museum. The exhibit opened October 7 thru February 4, 2024. You get a rare glimpse into the world of Spike Lee, through an immersive installation of his personal collection. Visitors will discover the source of inspiration that have fueled his creativity.

All three highly successful and respected artists, has consistently inspired and influenced generations of artists - through the lens and microphones they possess, to create and develop their own unique work of artistic expression.

When I made #7Summers I saw this additional clip of @janetjackson & 2Pac from #PoeticJustice and it was exactly how I felt in 2020. I liked how their dialogue was right in pocket with both worlds I try to display in my music. My real day to day life and my life as an artist. I try to keep them both authentic and parallel to each other.

In the same Summer, @officialspikelee had #ShesGottaHaveIt Season 2 on Netflix. I got my inspiration and idea💡 to use the #ConeyIslandIsTheEndOfTheLine episode to create the Intro/L.I.S. to help create the backdrop of my album. Spike Lee and John Singleton used my favorite singer of all-time in both pieces of work.

I decided to make the beat because I hadn’t produced any songs on any of my projects since 2015. I probably spent more time trying to get the right pitch of the kick and snare and figuring out where the song should end. Some people have asked me why didn’t I add another verse or add more bars. The real answer is, I just wanted it to be undeniably sharp!

Formed over decades, Spike Lee's personal collection offers a new lens through which we can learn how his lifelong interests have intersected and impacted his work. As part of Spike Lee: Creative Sources, you'll see more than 350 objects representing the filmmaker's sources of inspiration, such as historical photographs, paintings, album covers, movie posters, letters, first-edition books, costumes, and film memorabilia (many of which are autographed and signed to the director).
