Phantom of the Opera: Love Never Dies Review
I walked into the theatre with my snazzy black and red polka dotted bowtie and took a seat. The lights dimmed once again in the Au Rene Theatre until I couldn’t even see my hand in front of my face. Then, all eyes turned towards the stage as a spotlight shone down upon the infamous Phantom. He sat hunched over a jet black grand piano, staring at papers with music notes written all over them. There was silence in the theatre. Not a single sound was heard. It was only broken when the man behind the mask, the musician of mystery, the great Phantom himself began to sing the first song of the night. The play had begun.
Fun fact, before I saw this play, I didn’t know anything about the Phantom of the Opera. I would have looked up some information, but I feared that I would accidentally read some spoilers. So, I had gone into it without any knowledge. But to be honest, I don’t think I would have needed that knowledge anyway. Love Never Dies explains everything very well on its own, and I can appreciate that from the perspective of someone who has just gotten into the world of the Phantom. The story follows Christine Daae, one of the world’s most well-known sopranos. She’s having trouble with her marriage to her husband Raoul, who’s gambling and drinking addiction has put them in a crippling debt. In an attempt to get back on their feet, they travelled to New York to have Christine perform another show at a well-known opera house. However, from the shadows a remnant of her past, the Phantom, who had escaped Paris to begin a new life in Coney Island, tries to get Christine to fall in love with him again. He persuades Christine to bring her husband and her son to the Island to perform for him and hopefully convince Christine that their love is eternal. Of course, unexpected things take place as this long-abandoned relationship is rekindled once again. Whether this is good or bad is something that you would have to see in the play, my dear reader.
The first bit of praise that I would like to give is to the actors and their performances. Each character had their own personality and presence about them that was unique and distinct. Even the minor characters like the Phantom’s henchmen (played by Katrina Kemp, Stephen Petrovich, and Richard Koons) had their own charm, albeit it was a creepy type of charm. They were just… really weird and sometimes made my skin crawl. This was probably intentional though. As for the main cast, they were each phenomenal both as actors and singers. I would like to say that the songs that the Phantom and Gustave (Gardar Thor Cortes and both Casey Lyons and Jake Heston Miller respectively,) performed in were my favorites. Gardar’s voice is a powerful force of deep, melodic sound that echoes through the entire theatre with ease, making each song that he sang hit you physically as you felt the vibrations from his voice go through your body. As for Jake Miller or Casey Lyons (I couldn’t tell who was acting as Gustave when he was singing,) one of or both of those kids have some serious lungs! The character didn’t sing a lot, but when he did I got chills as he effortlessly hit every high note and delivered his vocals with confidence. But no matter who sang as that character, the both did an amazing job acting as him. Hats off to those two.
Next up is the set design, which was absolutely fabulous. One of my favorite designs was shown after Phantom’s opening performance, when the Carnival made its first appearance. For context, a decent amount of the show takes place in a carnival in Coney Island. This Carnival plays an important role in the play, but in order to avoid spoilers I will just talk about its set design. The background is a breathtaking representation of Manhattan made out of flashing lights reminiscent of those you would see flashing over the entrance of an old movie theatre. The carnival tents and banners all reflected the early 20th century feel and setting of the play. Best of all is the… how to describe it. It’s an arc with one half of it being the Phantom’s mask and the other half being metal pipes and a bright blue eyeball. It is both visually creepy and mesmerizing, and what I like about it is that the eye changes color throughout the play in order to emphasize the seriousness of certain moments. Straying away from the Carnival, there is also a subtle use of both cool blue and gold light in certain moments of the play that represent opposing sides of a conversation or a certain character (i.e. cool blue shone down when the Phantom appeared, and gold glimmered while Christine took the stage.)
Then there’s the music. Oh, the music that comes with Love Never Dies is personally my favorite part of the play, hands down. There were so many songs that I enjoyed, and it wasn’t just because of the actor’s voices. The orchestra did a masterful job in performing each piece and they only had about ten people in the pit! They played a great role in adding an extra layer of emotion, such as suspense and drama, to each scene or song. Sometimes it even surprised me. For example, there was an opening to the song, The Beauty Underneath, that was just an innocent piano accompanied by a slow tempo of music that carried on for a small amount of time… until the band broke that sweetness with a fast-paced tune accompanied by an electric guitar. When I heard that, I had jumped in my seat with pleasant surprise. That song was amazing and is probably one of my favorite pieces in the soundtrack.
As a closing statement, I would have to say that the Phantom of the Opera: Love Never Dies is a wonderful play that you should definitely go see. It’s acting was on point, the music is simply enchanting, and the story itself is quite enjoyable. But don’t just take my word for it, see it yourself! Go take a trip to the Opera and witness why Love truly Never Dies as soon as you can. And after seeing it, tell me about it here. I can’t wait to see what you think!
