AJ Styles Responds To Criticism Of His WWE Booking
Earlier on Thursday, the WWE on FOX Twitter account asked fans to pick their favorite AJ Styles vs. John Cena match. One fan opined that Styles “was used properly” during his feud with Cena through 2016 and 2018, questioning the way WWE has booked The Phenomenal One in recent years. Styles, one half of the RAW Tag Team Champions, noticed the tweet and disagreed with the fan’s criticism of WWE. I appreciate how I was used. I was made into a star. Now it’s my time to be what is needed and in the process make other stars. My time will come. Earlier this week on RAW, Styles lost a singles match to Riddle due to outside interference from The Viking Raiders. Styles & Omos will defend their titles against The Viking Raiders on the July 19 episode of RAW at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX. The show will mark the first episode of RAW in front of a live audience since the outbreak of the pandemic last March. See below for Styles’ tweet: I appreciate how I was used. I was made into a star. Now it’s my time to be what is needed and in the process make other stars. My time will come. https://t.co/jYEAUeGmb6 — AJ Styles (@AJStylesOrg) July 8, 2021 It's safe to say that we'd love to see @AJStylesOrg vs. @JohnCena one more time! pic.twitter.com/C9axNurseV — WWE on FOX (@WWEonFOX) July 8, 2021

This is the week that COVID-19 hit the wrestling world hard. Among those confirmed with the coronavirus are Renee Young, producer Adam Pearce and Kayla Braxton. With Young having the virus, All Elite Wrestling was also affected as AEW Champion Jon Moxley, Young’s husband, was forced to sit out Wednesday night’s live show in Jacksonville as was QT Marshall, who was also exposed to someone who had COVID-19. On Friday night SmackDown, we even got some superstars wearing masks for the first time, yet no mention of it by Michael Cole or Corey Graves.
Man. What a few days. My show gets cancelled and I get Covid. Wear your masks and wash your hands. Stay safe, everyone
— Renee Young (@ReneeYoungWWE) June 25, 2020
It’s no surprise that the wrestling biz has been touched by the virus, all segments of our society have been. It’s now a matter of how the business reacts to it and keeps all in the various companies safe. Any talk of fans entering the arenas is probably now off until this latest crisis is contained. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the deadly disease.
I just wish the WWE would be more transparent when dealing with this pandemic. It makes no sense for the WWE to hide it at all. We are all dealing with the deadly virus. Showing us how it affects the WWE Superstars would lead to a better connection with the WWE Universe. I even reached out to the powers that be in the WWE on Twitter for an answer as to why they continue to hide what they are doing to protect their employees and also those who haven’t been seen in months – Roman Reigns chief amongst them.
@wwe @StephMcMahon @TripleH Why aren't you more transparent with fans about how you are dealing with the #Covid19 pandemic? We can handle the truth. Plus, it would be good to hear from @WWERomanReigns @FightOwensFight @ReneeYoungWWE and more on how they are dealing with it.
— The Crowe's Nest (@thecrowesnest) June 26, 2020
They always say that storylines are best when they are closer to reality. Well, the WWE has missed a golden opportunity to stand out on this issue and be a leader. Unfortunately, I don’t think their stance will change since it’s only voice that is being heard and only one voice that matters in Stamford, CT.
Now, onto the week.
RAW
RESULTS
RAW Tag Team Championship Match: The Street Profits defeated The Viking Raiders to retain titles
RAW Women’s Championship Match: Asuka defeated Charlotte Flair
24/7 Championship Match: R-Truth defeated Akira Tozawa
Natalya defeated Liv Morgan
WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship Match: Sasha Banks & Bayley defeated The IIconics
United States Championship Match: Apollo Crews defeated Shelton Benjamin

— WWE (@WWE) June 23, 2020
Ladies Night – From the swerve of Sasha Banks teasing a match with Bayley for the SmackDown Championship to the Asuka vs. Charlotte Flair title match to the Liv Morgan vs. Natalya with Lana (edited, but still good) storyline and more, we got an interesting night from the Women of WWE. Sasha vs. Asuka could be a classic if they give it enough time and breathing room. We’ll miss Flair not that she’s been taken out by Nia Jax and will be having surgery (elective or not). Where Liv, Nattie and Lana go next is intriguing too! Although, I’m not too pleased to see Morgan jobbed out lately. She deserves a bigger push than that.

— WWE (@WWE) June 23, 2020
Clean Finish – Full golf clap for the clean finish between the Street Profits and the Viking Raiders tag team match. Dug the honor and respect notion portion of their feud. Now, will they be allies when it comes to taking out Andrade and Angel Garza?
Predictable:
24/7: Sure, we knew that the Ninjas and Akira Tozawa were going to take the title from R-Truth, with help from Bobby Lashley of course. I just hope they continue with the antics out of the ring because that’s where the 24/7 fun really begins.
WE HAVE A TRADE
@HEELZiggler fills us in: He and @RealRobertRoode are coming to #WWERaw in exchange for @AJStylesOrg's move to #SmackDown! pic.twitter.com/P1PqaxkoKL
— WWE (@WWE) June 23, 2020
Time will tell on this trade:
Dolph traded to RAW – So, we now know who SmackDown traded to RAW for AJ Styles. It was Dolph Ziggler and the Glorious Bobby Roode heading to Monday night. How convenient too in that Drew McIntyre needed an opponent for Extreme Rules and Ziggler is here to collect. They’ve got history, but it doesn’t seem like enough to get for The Phenomenal One.
The Legend Killer continues:
The Viper vs. The Big Show – I’ll be honest, I half expected Randy Orton to go crazy and take out Ric Flair instead of the tried and true of taking on The Big Show down the road. That would’ve been fun and a nice twist that Orton really wants to relive the Legend Killer days. Maybe down the road. But for now, it looks like Show is the next victim.
Not all in:
Monday Night Messiah vs. Mysterio – I’ll admit, after weeks of back-and-forth, I’m still not fully buying in to the whole Seth Rollins vs. Rey Mysterio and Dominick feud. There’s just not a lot there for me to take a bit out of. Maybe it will get some more sizzle at Extreme Rules, but I’m not holding my breath.
NXT

NXT Cruiserweight Championship Non-Title Match: Santos Escobar defeated Jake Atlas
Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez defeated Kayden Carter & Kacy Catanzaro
Karrion Kross defeated Bronson Reed

— WWE NXT (@WWENXT) June 25, 2020
Lee rides tall – Keith Lee is now THE man and next in line for the NXT Championship. A very solid triple threat main event leaves everyone strong and a huge title match in two weeks between Lee and Adam Cole. It wouldn’t shock me if we are basking in the glory of the NEW NXT Champion on July 8th.
What a BATTLE between @RealKeithLee, @JohnnyGargano & @FinnBalor! This is your #WWENXT MAIN EVENT! pic.twitter.com/f95Dpq7ufa
— WWE (@WWE) June 25, 2020
Rhea Ripley – Dare I say that Rhea Ripley is funny! It’s nice to see the “other” side of Ripley as we all know she’s a beast in the ring and has some depth to her as well. Next week, Robert Stone will be on more than just the trashy side of her physicality. Maybe he’ll throw a shoe again!
The end came for @bronsonreedwwe.
#WWENXT @WWEKarrionKross @Lady_Scarlett13 pic.twitter.com/zBn8UhsfGh
— WWE (@WWE) June 25, 2020
Karrion Kross vs. Bronson Reed – Oh sure, we knew there was no way that Reed was going to pull off an upset, but to see these two brutes wage battle against each other in a very physical matchup was entertaining.

— WWE NXT (@WWENXT) June 25, 2020
The Great American Bash – Bringing back tradition is a good thing. First In Your House and now this WCW/WWE Summer Special. I just hope we get a few vignette highlight packages too of GAB of yesteryear. Those were some really good cards!
Fun and productive:
Kayden & Kacy vs. Raquel & Dakota – I like the build-up with Carter & Catanzaro in their mini-feud with Kai & Gonzalez. Both teams look stronger coming out of it too.
Dexter Lumis – Strong, silent and looking quite deadly. Roderick Strong, even after his Undisputed Era Therapy breakthrough, wanted no part of him but will now be strapped to him in next week’s first ever Strap Match at The Great American Bash.
SMACKDOWN
Due to the COVID-19 positive tests, we got a special tribute to The Undertaker on this week’s SmackDown. They are saying that the Boneyard Match at WrestleMania 36 was UT’s final match. That will remain to be seen. The full first hour was devoted to special vignettes (taken from The Undertaker’s Last Ride WWE Network special) and the broadcast premiere of the Boneyard Match between The Undertaker and AJ Styles. Quality stuff even if you were watching for the second time.

As for the rest of the show, a fun second hour with in-ring action. We got Nikki Cross gaining her first PPV shot at Bayley’s SmackDown Championship at Extreme Rules. Really enjoyed the eight-man tag team match and it was nice to see Lucha House Party get the tv win as well.

Universal Champion Braun Strowman set up his “swamp match” with Bray Wyatt for Extreme Rules. After asking for more to the storyline last week, I’m glad we got it out of Strowman by acknowledging his dark side past and inviting it back into his present. We can only imagine what kind of goodies we’ll get in that cinematic match with Wyatt’s twisted mind at work.

— WWE (@WWE) June 27, 2020
In the main event, it was an interesting sight to see all the SmackDown superstars at ringside to support Hardy’s tribute to The Undertaker against Corbin. LOVE the “Corbin sucks” chants too! A fitting end to the night too with Hardy, Strowman, Big E and Matt Riddle all getting their finishing moves over on Corbin. It was a nice nod to what used to happen at the house shows of yesteryear.
One question though – why was Riddle at ringside but nothing done to build on his win over AJ Styles last week until the final minute of the broadcast with a passing mention by Cole. And oh yeah, what happened to Styles vs. Drew Gulak for the Intercontinental Title? Details people!
RESULTS
Fatal Four-Way SmackDown Women’s Championship #1 Contender’s Match: Nikki Cross defeated Alexa Bliss, Dana Brooke & Lacey Evans
8-Man Tag Team Match: Lucha House Party & The New Day defeated Cesaro, Shinsuke Nakamura, The Miz & John Morrison
Jeff Hardy defeated King Corbin
Extreme Rules PPV – Updated Card
WWE Championship Match – Drew McIntyre vs. Dolph Ziggler
RAW Women’s Championship Match: Asuka vs. Sasha Banks
Universal Championship Match: Wyatt Swamp Match – Braun Strowman vs. Bray Wyatt
SmackDown Women’s Championship – Bayley vs. Nikki Cross
PARTING SHOTS:
Sorry to see WWE Backstage get cancelled. Although, I’m not surprised. The 11pm eastern timeslot never gave them a chance! Signing CM Punk to pair with Renee Young was a nice coup, but not having him there every week hurt. When he was on, ratings went up. Plus, it never quite achieved the insider status it hope to get. Production-wise, the show was good. There just wasn’t enough of it at good spot and oh yeah, not too many TV viewers have or know of FS1. Put on a real network, it may have succeeded. For now, now that it’s been downsized in the pandemic age, we’ll see it again around the major PPVs.
Wear you masks people! It may be awkward, but it saves lives!
COMING UP THIS WEEK:
RAW: Double Contract Signing WWE Championship – Drew McIntyre & Dolph Ziggler RAW Women’s Championship – Asuka & Sasha Banks
NXT – Great American Bash – Night 1 Aliyah & Robert Stone vs. Rhea Ripley Fatal Four-Way NXT Women’s Championship #1 Contender’s Match: Candice LeRae vs. Mia Yim vs. Dakota Kai vs. Tegan Nox Strap Match: Dexter Lumis vs. Roderick Strong
SMACKDOWN: Sheamus Toast to Jeff Hardy

Cliffhanger – (noun) – a melodramatic or adventure serial in which each installment ends in suspense in order to interest the reader or viewer in the next installment.
It’s also a word that you could say sums up this week in the WWE. Whether it be what will happen next between Seth Rollins/Kevin Owens and the Authors of Pain or an RKO to AJ Styles on RAW, or a triple-threat treat ending things on NXT or Bray Wyatt’s kidnapping of Daniel Bryan leading to the bizarre intrusion into The Miz’s family, the next step is left in the balance.
Congratulations, @AJStylesOrg. Your victory prize tonight is…an #RKOOuttaNowhere!#RAW @RandyOrton pic.twitter.com/AoovesucIM
— WWE (@WWE) December 3, 2019
It’s a refreshing change in the WWE’s storytelling to let things play out over several weeks. A little breathing room brings out the mystery akin to the old days of pro wrestling where everything didn’t need to be explained in one episode because the attention span of the audience was only 30 seconds long. It’s also a building block to get us to come back week after week.
Take for instance the Daniel Bryan vs. The Fiend/Bray Wyatt storyline. I think we all expected this week’s Smackdown to just move into the announcement of Bryan vs. The Fiend for another WWE Universal Title match after The Fiend kidnapped him at the end of last week’s episode.
Cliffhanger time! Instead, we get a Firefly Fun House on Miz TV edition where Wyatt reminds us that Bryan was part of his family and that he won’t come out to play at the TLC PPV. Instead, we get a challenge for The Miz to play and when he won’t, Wyatt threatens his family. Brilliant.
So, after a backstage attack, will The Miz accept a match with The Fiend at TLC and just how Bryan play into it? How will he look when he returns? Will he be with Bray or against him?
Intrigue. Emotion. Drama. Exactly what you need for a good cliffhanger.
STAR OF THE WEEK:
Cleanin' up the nasties in no time.
#SmackDown @LaceyEvansWWE pic.twitter.com/Fr0YlHlDuB
— WWE (@WWE) December 7, 2019
It would be easy to give it again to an NXT star like Keith Lee or Rhea Ripley, but we’re going another route this week. Our star of the week goes to LACEY EVANS. It’s not because she dominated this week. It’s because she gave us a reason to like her. She gave us a reason to care. She gave us a reason to invest in her. By standing up to Sasha Banks as the mother of her 6-year old daughter, by standing up as a Marine and by showing it to us while keeping a little of that “nasty” persona, Evans did more to further her character than any match could do. Well done, Lacey!
RAW
RESULTS
Kevin Owens defeated Lashley (DQ when Authors of Pain interfere)
Drew McIntyre defeated Akira Tozawa
Aleister Black defeated Tony Nese
Andrade defeated Eric Young
Kyle Busch wins 24/7 Championship over R-Truth
Erick Rowan defeated No Way Jose
The Kabuki Warriors defeated Charlotte
The Viking Raiders defeated Mark Sterling & Mitchell Lyons
The OC defeated Rey Mysterio, Ricochet, & Humberto Carrillo
What we loved:
.@LanaWWE's music hits. #RAW@FightOwensFight: pic.twitter.com/he89zlDNsa
— WWE Universe (@WWEUniverse) December 3, 2019
The KO Show – Absolutely loved the spotlight that Kevin Owens is getting on Monday nights! Arguably one of the WWE’s best on the mic these days, Owens is working to thwart Seth Rollins and the AOP while interjecting himself into the Lana/Rusev/Lashley feud. Entertaining doesn’t even begin to start the back and forth between KO and Lana. Including the effort at Starrcade, it’s made me gain back my interest in Rusev vs. Lashley.
Kyle Busch wins the 24/7 title – Does anything else need to be said?!
Kabuki Warriors – Sure, the Warriors should win a 2-on-1 handicap match against The Queen, Charlotte Flair. But, in the match of the night, we get the Women’s Tag Team Champions win it with an InSane flying elbow from Kairi Sane off the top rope onto Flair while she’s got Asuka in a figure-eight leglock! Great visual.
Lana – I’m suing! I’m suing! I’m suuuuuuiiiiiinnnnnngggggg! Her dramatics (and green dress to boot) after Bobby Lashley and herself were arrested for “assaulting” local police authorities was hysterical.
What we hated:
RAW Tag Team Championship – Can we get some challengers and a storyline? I get that they want to show The Viking Raiders as strong champs, but squash match after squash match isn’t helping them. They need to face, challenge and beat teams like The OC (possibly at TLC maybe).
NXT
RESULTS
Killian Dain defeated Pete Dunne
Shayna Baszler defeated Xia Li (Submission)
The Forgotten Sons vs. Adrian Alanis and Leon Ruff
Matt Riddle defeated Kassius Ohno
KUSHIDA defeated Cameron Grimes
Dominik Dijakovic, Keith Lee, and Tommaso Ciampa defeated The Undisputed Era
What we loved:
Everything @RealKeithLee does is a gift to the internet. 'Tis the season, @FinnBalor… #WWENXT pic.twitter.com/rib8JLdAdi
— WWE (@WWE) December 5, 2019
Star makers – The continued rise of Keith Lee and Rhea Ripley is awesome! Lee not only is becoming THE big man in NXT, but now he’s worked his way into a possible NXT Championship match if he can defeat Tommaso Ciampa and Finn Balor on the next episode of NXT. As for Ripley, in addition to helping Mia Yim get some measure of revenge on Dakota Kai, Ripley gets a title shot herself against Shayna Baszler on December 18th after bearing the brunt of a beatdown from Baszler and her crew. The skies the limit for these two!
.@itsLioRush puts the NXT Cruiserweight Title on the line against @AngelGarzaWwe NEXT WEEK on #WWENXT. pic.twitter.com/pCwPtta7Xw
— WWE NXT (@WWENXT) December 5, 2019
Lio vs. Angel – We said a couple of weeks ago that we hoped the first match between NXT Cruiserweight Champion Lio Rush and Angel Garza was only the start of a feud. We get our wish now as the two are set for a rematch that hopefully will build on the personal involvement of Rush’s wife.
The backstory – Love that NXT is taking the next step in trying to get some of the lesser stars of the company over with simple vignettes that make us care about them more than just in the ring. In bringing back KUSHIDA and Kassius Ohno with a setup, it makes the in-ring more of a payoff.
Match of the night – Dain vs. Dunne – What a way to start the show! What a way to end a match. With a sleeper hold firmly in place on the top rope by Pete Dunne, Killian Dane powers back to pin Dunne for the duke! Well-paced, physical and set the tone for another wonderful night of wrestling from Full Sail.
Welcome back Mauro – After taking a shot from Corey Graves on Twitter for his NXT Takeover: WarGames work and missing Survivor Series plus last week’s episode of NXT, it’s awesome to not only have Mauro Ranallo back on TV, but to start the entire show. He’s a one-man treat giving not only play-by-play but also some commentary along the way. If I’m WWE, I’d give him a shot to do a show by himself or just with one other analyst. He’s that damn good!
What we hated:
The ambiance – I’m going to keep harping on it until they move an NXT out of Full Sail. The crowd just doesn’t measure up to the in-ring product. It does make an impact on watching at home. It’s an obvious upgrade the WWE and NXT came make to take on AEW, who’s look and feel does out do NXT each week even though you can argue that NXT delivers the better in-ring show.
SMACKDOWN
RESULTS
Alexa Bliss defeated Mandy Rose
Smackdown Tag Team Title #1 Contender’s Elimination Match: The Revival defeated Ali & Chad Gable, Lucha House Party, & Heavy Machinery

FAMILY – Bray Wyatt wants to be part of The Miz’s family. As we’ve stated above, a brilliant and diabolical plot is now unleashed by Wyatt to get The Miz to play with him at TLC after kidnapping Daniel Bryan and making him unavailable to play. Very intrigued to see what the next step is in this one.

— WWE (@WWEIndia) December 7, 2019
Elias and Dana Brooke – Forthe second straight week, we get an Elias sighting as Drake Maverick tries to get his swerve on with Dana Brooke. With a witty, whimsical rib, Elias not only mocks Maverick in song, but also in the ring, letting Brooke get the final say in embarrassing him with the “pin.”
Lacey Evans – see star of the week above.
What we hated:
King Corbin vs. Roman Reigns – Not for obvious reasons, but for the details. Before the show on social media, we get the announcement that it’s Corbin vs. Reigns in a TLC match at the PPV. Why? No explanation. Then, after a stellar match with Dolph Ziggler, Reigns gets handcuffed to the ring post and covered in dog food. Why? We get the obvious reference to Reigns as “The Big Dog,” but shouldn’t this all lead to a dog collar match instead of a TLC match? Makes no sense.
Who’s under the ring – During the Reigns beatdown at the end of Smackdown, we see someone holding Reigns’ leg from under the ring. Who is it? No reveal even with Ziggler and Corbin searching under the ring for the dog food. Huh?!
Parting thought – Was looking forward to Arrow star Stephen Amell on WWE Backstage, but sickness forced a no-show. It would’ve been interesting to see if Renee Young and crew would press Amell about his involvement outside of WWE with Ring of Honor and All Elite Wrestling as he is an honorary member of The Elite. Maybe he’ll reschedule for this week’s show when CM Punk returns!

Naomi tags in to get a two count with a sunset flip. Morgan gets the tag for her team and she squares off with Naomi after they collide and neither woman goes down. Liv does the Matrix backbend to avoid a clothesline, but Naomi still takes her down by slamming her head into the turnbuckle. The fight spills out of the ring where Naomi gets rammed into the steel steps. Loga gets the tag and starts dishing out some stiff strikes. Naomi hits a hurricanrana and tags in Charlotte, who hits a series of chops and a neckbreaker. Logan hits two chop blocks to take the champ down, but she still manages to tag in Becky for a missile dropkick. Ruby comes in and Becky hits a few suplexes before getting her in the DisArmHer. Morgan breaks it up so Riott can hit her finisher to get the pin and the win.

We return to see Ziggler drop Owens with a jumping DDT to give himself a little time to recover from the beating he took during the break. Dolph drops Kevin with a neckbreaker for a quick two count. He lines up for a superkick, but Owens counters into a gutbuster and an elbow drop from the middle rope for his own near fall. Owens attempts a senton bomb from the top rope, but he lands on Ziggler's knees. The Showoff uses a Fameasser to get another two count. Both men block superkicks before Ziggler hits the Zig Zag for a very close two count. Sami Zayn's music hits and he runs down to the ring, distracting Ziggler long enough for Owens to superkick him in the back of the head to score the win.

He rolls out of the ring and throws Dolph into the barricade when he tries to follow. Ziggler hits a third dropkick to knock him off the apron. Ziggler gets whipped hard into the apron.
