The Cannabis Groups Facebook Doesn’t Want You to See
As of the 6th August 2018 Facebook started to filter and remove specific groups from their search results. Search on Facebook has always been a bit of a hit/miss affair, but now they have removed the ability for users to search for ANY Cannabis Groups, or Marijuana Groups and related searches. You also find no Cannabis Pages or Marijuana Pages either when you try and search for any content to do with Cannabis or Marijuana, apart from videos. None. Nadda. Nix. As of the 8th August 2018 this was what you see when you search for Cannabis in the Facebook Search.   Go on try it! You can’t find anything apart from videos relating to the search terms for Cannabis, Marijuana and all associated search terms. Whilst this is Facebook’s right to reduce/remove functionality, we believe the only reason to do this is to try and stop or reduce the effective use of Facebook as a way for Cannabis users to share information.
“Censorship” is perhaps too harsh a word, as Facebook is a private company and has the right to allow or disallow specific content based on nothing more than their own internal policies. However we believe that if there is information “out there” then it should be freely available. What next? An outright removal of ALL Facebook groups and Facebook pages with any mention of Cannabis or Marijuana? Of course they can do this if they feel it is in their own interests, but that will affect a LARGE number of people who may choose to look elsewhere to connect with other like minded people. Taken to the extreme, this could see anyone who is a member of a group or who may have liked a page for Cannabis or Marijuana being banned or having their accounts suspended. Who knows, but it is their platform and they can do what they like…
With all that in mind, we have put together a list of over 400 groups that might be useful for users of Facebook who wish to share their thoughts and connect with other cannabis users, medical or recreational. If you have ANY groups that are not mentioned or are running a group that you would like to see added then please do. We are working to improve the list and make it as usable as possible for our site visitors.

Before the new iOS feature was rolled out, media buyers reported that Facebook could capture as much as 95 percent of sales made on their clients’ sites. Now, many media buyers are reporting that Facebook is capturing only 50 percent of sales. One buyer reports that, with one client, just 3 percent of sales are showing up in Facebook’s ad manager.
It's complicated.
Sheera Frenkel und Cecilia Kang haben ein Buch über Facebook veröffentlicht, An Ugly Truth. Klingt sehr spannend, was man so liest.
28 power players behind Europe’s tech revolution gekürt.
Real Life abonniert Ihr jetzt besser mal.

Favorite Essays of 2017
Every year, I keep a running list of my favorite essays, articles, and interviews I read throughout the year. The past years's lists can be found here: 2016, 2015, 2014, and 2013.
Below are a handful of my favorite pieces of writing from 2017 with topics ranging from social media to Dwayne Johnson, North Korea to Homer, postmodernism to Olive Garden. Enjoy!
How Jokes Won The Election - Emily Nussbaum (January 23, 2017) Emily Nussbaum is one of my favorite critics and she kicked off this year with a brilliant look at the intersection of jokes, comedy and politics in the 2016 election. "By 2016 the wheel had spun hard the other way: now it was the neo-fascist strongman who held the microphone and an army of anonymous dirty-joke dispensers who helped put him in office. Online, jokes were powerful accelerants for lies—a tweet was the size of a one-liner, a “dank meme” carried farther than any op-ed, and the distinction between a Nazi and someone pretending to be a Nazi for “lulz” had become a blur. Ads looked like news and so did propaganda and so did actual comedy, on both the right and the left—and every combination of the four was labelled “satire.” In a perverse twist, Trump may even have run for President as payback for a comedy routine: Obama’s lacerating takedown of him at the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. By the campaign’s final days, the race felt driven less by policy disputes than by an ugly war of disinformation, one played for laughs. How do you fight an enemy who’s just kidding?"
A Father's Final Odyssey - Daniel Mendelsohn (April 24, 2017 I like essays about literature, about travel, and about father/son relationships and this one had all three. Mendelsohn recounts the story of his father attendeding a class he was teaching on Homer's Odyssey and the trip they took together before his father died retracing Homer's journey.
Dwayne Johnson for President! - Caity Weaver (May 10, 2017) Caity Weaver is the master of the celebrity profile — whether it's Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian, or even the new Ken Doll — and her profile of Dwayne Johnson from May is no exception. Be sure to listen to her interview on the Longform podcast too, where she talks about writing about celebrities and celebrity culture.
America's First Postmodern President - Jeet Heer (July 8, 2017) Jeet Heer quickly became my favorite political writer this year with a series of essays applying Marxism, media theory, and postmodernism to our current political climate. I posted a Twitter thread back in October highlighting a few of my favorite pieces, but the one I come back to again and again is this piece where he argues Trump is our first postmodern president.
You Are the Product - John Lanchester (August 17, 2017) Countless books have been written about the influence and power of social media, especially Facebook, and this year saw a new critical lens put upon the internet giant. The best piece, in my opinion, is John Lanchester's piece in the London Review of Books where he synthesizes a lot of ideas around social networking, advertising, and Facebook's power into a coherent theory on the role of social media in today's society. I've read this piece a few times and even assigned it to one of my classes where it generated one of the more livelier discussions of the semester.
How America Lost Its Mind - Kurt Andersen (September 2017) The Atlantic ran an adapted excerpt from Kurt Andersen's new book Fantasyland and it couldn't be more timely. Looking at American history, Andersen traces the degradation of truth, facts, and expertise in place for fantasy and magical thinking, naturally ending with the election of Donald Trump and everything that comes with his presidency (fake news, birtherism, etc). Hanna Rosin, in her review for it in The New York Times, argues Andersen's book does for tracing the history of delusion in America what Richard Hofstadter's book did for anti-intellectualism, and I couldn't agree more.
Still Lives That Won't Hold Still - Teju Cole (September 7, 2017) I'm on the record of being a big Teju Cole fan and will read everything he has written but this piece, on photographer Marie Cosindas, is master work in criticism and form. The piece opens "Marie Cosindas, who was born in Boston in September 1923 and who died in the same city in May of this year at age 93, made photographs of such potency that they seem magical, dependent on something beyond mere sleight of hand for their mesmerizing effects and unified mood, so that the experience of looking at a selection of them is like watching a single sentence unfurl over several pages..." and then continues, rather brilliantly, as one run-on sentence.
The Mind of John McPhee - Sam Anderson (September 28, 2017) John McPhee is one of my favorite writers and I especially love him writing about writing (His piece on structure is another essay I assign to my students). His new book, Draft No. 4 collects much of his musings on writing into a nice package. Sam Anderson profiled the famously quiet writer for The New York Times and its delightful.
The Risk of Nuclear War with North Korea - Evan Osnos (September 18, 2017) If you read one thing on North Korea and a potential confrontation with the reclusive regime, let it be Evan Osnos's. Osnos spent time in Pyongyang and reflects on how those inside the country see themselves in relationship to the rest of the world and how that's changed since the 2016 election. It's powerful, scary, and fascinating. (And when you're done, listen to him chat with David Remnick on The New Yorker Radio Hour podcast.)
The First White President - Ta-Nehisi Coates (October 2017) This is an excerpt from Ta-Nehisi Coates's new book, We Were Eight Years In Power and simultaneously looks at the role race played in the 2016 election while also deconstructing the problems with pinning Trump's victory on economic hardships of the 'white working class'. Coates writes with an intensity that I really admire and is an intellectual force whose words feel ever more important.
Christ in the Garden of Endless Breadsticks - Helen Rosner (October 3, 2017) Helen Rosner is the only person who can spend the first four paragraphs waxing poetic on Paul Gauguin before transitioning to a brilliant critique of the national Italian restaurant chain Olive Garden. Despite growing up with regular visits to our local Olive Garden, I'd not stepped inside one since college but this brought back all sorts of memories.
Your Reckoning. And Mine - Rebecca Traister (November 12, 2017) Rebecca Traister is the person I most want to read on the sexual harassment reckoning and I think I've devoured everything she's written this year. This piece, written in the midst of the Harvey Weinstein revelations, pulls together a range of events of the last few years to explain how we got here, what it means, and the implications of the current cultural moment.

To my Tumblr family
@channel @david
To my Tumblr family,
I think I’m finally done crying enough to actually write something. I didn’t cry when Murphy told me I was being let go because I was upset to lose a job. I cried because I felt as though I was being ripped away from my family.
Crap, I’m crying again. That really didn’t take long! Gosh, I really hate crying in airports. It must be something about trips to Duluth because this now makes it two for two! I guess I’m not as dead inside as I pretend to be.
I’m crying because y’all are so great and I cherished every day I got to spend with you. The last (nearly) three years have been some of the best of my life. I got to wake up each morning and go to a place I loved and be around people who genuinely brought me joy. Even on the worst days, there were always smiles to be had. And on top of that, I got to work on an amazing product that I truly believe in and has done so much for its users. I got to make something people wanted to use. I got to make something special.
I’ve always referred to Tumblr as home and the people as my family. What that meant to me is something that’s hard to put into words, but I want to try.
HQ was a place that was safe for me in a world that still really does not want people like me to exist. Even New York City isn’t a safe place for trans people, but Tumblr was. Tumblr was a place where I got to truly be myself, unapologetically. I got to just exist. I got to let my guard down, something I very rarely do.
Tumblr was a place where I found my voice, grew, and discovered who I am. When I joined Tumblr in 2014, I was only nine months into living as an openly trans woman. I had been struggling to really find comfort and confidence while existing in the world. I didn’t know my voice. Mostly, I was just angry at the world. But Tumblr gave me a place to work that out and learn what my voice was and how to use it. Tumblr helped me grow as both a human and an engineer and it gave me the confidence to be me.
That’s the Tumblr I will miss because it wasn’t a job to me, it was a home and family that also happened to give me a paycheck. Over the last three years, Tumblr introduced me to some of the best humans I’ve ever met in my life. People who are kind and caring. Supportive and encouraging. Smart yet not full of themselves.
Thinking about my time at Tumblr, I don’t know what else I could ask for. On top of all of these things, I got to work at a place where I felt like I made an impact for the better. I got to work somewhere I could speak up and fight for what I believe in. I could fight for equality, diversity, and my coworkers. I could fight for our users. Sometimes, that even meant yelling at David in front of the whole company at All Team or speaking up during Prod Reviews with a personal but relevant anecdote about the importance of our decisions. I wasn’t always right and it didn’t always change things, but I got to be in a place where I could speak up and fight those fights.
I got to, somehow, lead Tumblr’s femgineers and organize our monthly lunches. It was never lost on me that I was a trans woman leading a group of women and not once did anyone ever make me feel like I didn’t belong in the group or as its organizer. When I get bummed or jaded about this increasingly bonkers world we live in, it’s all of you that give me hope for the future. Seeing the fucking amazing work that some of you are doing while still in your early 20s and only relatively recently out of college gives me so much optimism for what you’ll achieve and the mark you’ll leave on this world. I’m literally crying again just thinking about it. My voice could never do you all justice, but I hope it helped.
I know this is already long, but I have so many memories rushing into my mind right now. I’m hesitant to start naming them because I know for every one of them, there will be dozens I’m neglecting to mention. It’s hard to list everything when literally every day of the last three years was memorable.
But to just name a few…
There was my first Tumblr Halloween party where Steck drunkenly told me about the discussions they had about me after my interview. He kept saying he wasn’t supposed to tell me, but over the years, I think he told me a dozen times. Almost every time he was drunk. I, of course, knew better than to trust him. Mohonk! I mean, what else do I need to say? Pellcar on the way to Monhonk! Dying tonight on the boat cruise. All the femgineer lunches. Flying to WWDC in Mint chocolate lass. Two Grace Hoppers, the first of which was one of the most affirming weeks of my life. Shitposting and coalescing in #new_york. Caragh’s completely insane stories and my DMing her with the weirdest fucking shit a coworker has ever said to another. Gatorade Gala and Chainschella. The Kenny themed party! grund. Sleeping in conference rooms after mind blowing hack days. Holiday parties followed by Sward bringing everyone McCoulton’s the next morning. The goddamn lizard election! The 9west temperature wars and 9east clapping. Constant sandwich arguments in #holy_war. Brian Michel dressing up as a reblog on Halloween. Friday coffee with the old Ads Team crew. Coming in the day after the election and having Ken hug and comfort me as I cried in the freight elevator. All the comforting we did for each other after the election. Ethan DMing me “food” right before lunch every day. Movies We Love. The aesthetic channels. Sam constantly asking me if I was happy and giving me heartfelt hugs on a near-daily basis. Finding sisterhood for the first time in #heyladies. Robbie’s hack day projects. Taking selfies of myself to approve every single PR. All the GIFs. The bad puns with Keith, Cherokee, and Josh. The security capture the flags. Daily cat photos in #KittyTime. Turning around at my desk to see Lucy Lawless in the elevator. For better or for worse, Prima Punisher. Flying with my Falcons. The dozens of you who helped my former startup’s Kickstarter be a success. Snowboarding trips to Killington and Montana. Trolling Joey with Slack bots. Bonusly points from Graham for every lol chain. 🍆🕳.
I could honestly go on and on with memories all day, there are enough to fill an entire blog and they’re coming faster than I can type them. I wish I could mention everyone here, but if I didn’t mention you by name, please know that you had an impact on me and were a part of this family. If our time at Tumblr overlapped, you were (are!) important to me and made my life better.
Looking forward, I will be fine. Don’t worry about me. Instead of worrying, use that energy to keep Tumblr great. That is my ask to my family, keep Tumblr fucking weird af. And SPEAK UP. You work in a place where you can use your voice. Do it! Fight for Tumblr users. Fight for each other.
And worst case scenario, Chris already has the git branch to delete Tumblr.
I want to thank everyone who came to Madison Square Park yesterday while I sat crying on bench. I really don’t cry very often and I have a thing about letting people see me cry, but just seeing all of you and how much you cared helped me so much. I also want to thank everyone who reached out to me via text, Twitter, Facebook, and other Slack orgs. And especially to Michelle (happy birthday!!!) and Shah whose messages about the impact I’ve had made me start crying all over again. Okay, Amelia, get it together.
I hope to keep in contact with all of you. I hope you’ll reach out to me on Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, text, other Slack orgs, and wherever else. Let’s hang, get lunch, eat dinner, grab drinks, play volleyball, and just plain be weird. I’m terrible at keeping in touch with people, but I want that to change. Please don’t hesitate to contact me anyway you know how because, and I know I keep saying this, I love you all.
Finally, thank you to Amanda Brennan for bringing me to Tumblr and making the last three years possible. Thank you to Brian and Sherry for allowing me to have a heads up the the night before so I could process and react with dignity without being blindsided or reactionary. And thank you to David for building something so wonderful.
I love you all so so so much, Amelia

Started using Alexa before it was cool. I bought a first-generation Echo a few months after its launch because Amazon.com showed me a banner ad as I was shopping for new speakers. After it arrived, my then-roommate, a software engineer at Google, eagerly compared Alexa’s capabilities with those of her Google Assistant. Alexa didn’t really measure up. But as far as I was concerned, it did everything I wanted: it played my favorite songs, sounded my morning alarms, and sometimes told me the news and weather.
Five years later, my simple desires have been eclipsed by Amazon’s ambitions. Alexa is now distributed everywhere, capable of controlling more than 85,000 smart home products from TVs to doorbells to earbuds. It can execute over 100,000 “skills” and counting. It processes billions of interactions a week, generating huge quantities of data about your schedule, your preferences, and your whereabouts. Alexa has turned into an empire, and Amazon is only getting started.
Speaking with MIT Technology Review, Rohit Prasad, Alexa’s head scientist, has now revealed further details about where Alexa is headed next. The crux of the plan is for the voice assistant to move from passive to proactive interactions. Rather than wait for and respond to requests, Alexa will anticipate what the user might want. The idea is to turn Alexa into an omnipresent companion that actively shapes and orchestrates your life. This will require Alexa to get to know you better than ever before.

Facebook suspends AIQ data firm used by Vote Leave in Brexit campaign

Facebook has suspended a Canadian data firm that played a key role in the campaign for the UK to leave the EU.
The social media giant said AggregateIQ (AIQ) may have improperly received users’ data.
It cites reported links with the parent company of Cambridge Analytica (CA), the consultancy accused of improperly accessing the data of millions.
AIQ denies ever being part of CA, its parent company SCL or accessing improperly obtained Facebook data.
The Vote Leave campaign paid AIQ £2.7m ($3.8m) ahead of the 2016 EU referendum.
An ex-volunteer with the campaign has also claimed Vote Leave donated £625,000 to another group to get around campaign spending limits, with most of the money going to AIQ. Vote Leave has denied any wrongdoing.
AIQ’s website once quoted Vote Leave chief Dominic Cummings saying: “Without a doubt, the Vote Leave campaign owes a great deal of its success to the work of AggregateIQ. We couldn’t have done it without them.” The quote has since been removed.
In total, AIQ was given £3.5m by groups campaigning for Brexit, including Vote Leave, the Democratic Unionist Party and Veterans for Britain. The UK’s Electoral Commission reopened an investigation into Vote Leave’s campaign spending in November.
“In light of recent reports that AggregateIQ may be affiliated with SCL and may, as a result, have improperly received FB user data, we have added them to the list of entities we have suspended from our platform while we investigate,” a Facebook spokesperson said.
“Our internal review continues, and we will co-operate fully with any investigations by regulatory authorities.”
In a message posted to its website, AIQ says it is “100% Canadian owned and operated” and “has never been and is not a part of Cambridge Analytica or SCL”.
It adds: “Aggregate IQ has never managed, nor did we ever have access to, any Facebook data or database allegedly obtained improperly by Cambridge Analytica.”

It also denied ever employing Chris Wylie, the Canadian whistleblower who alleged that the data of 50m people was improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica. Facebook has since said the number of people affected could be closer to 87m. CA says it obtained the data of no more than 30m people and has deleted all of it.
Spotlight on Brexit campaign
Analysis by technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones
It was three weeks ago that Facebook suspended Cambridge Analytica just hours before a whistleblower’s revelations to the Observer newspaper triggered the current scandal over improper use of data.
Christopher Wylie insisted that Aggregate IQ was closely linked to Cambridge Analytica, and supplied documents to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee which he said proved it.
Now Facebook’s decision to suspend the Canadian firm from its platform appears to give further validation to Mr Wylie’s claims. It also throws the spotlight back onto the potential use of Facebook data during the Brexit campaign.
Facebook says it is looking into whether the data that Cambridge Analytica acquired improperly from as many as 87 million people – 1 million of them in the UK – ended up with Aggregate IQ. The firm worked for both Vote Leave and BeLeave during the EU referendum campaign, but has always insisted it has never been a part of Cambridge Analytica, and has not had access to any of its Facebook data.
AIQ is a small company operating out of Victoria, British Columbia. It uses data to help micro-target voters and was founded by two Canadian political staffers.
Apart from its Brexit work the company has also been accused by Mr Wylie of distributing “incredibly anti-Islamic” content on social media ahead of the 2015 Nigerian presidential election to discredit Muslim opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari, who went on to win the contest.
The BBC has approached AIQ for a response to the Nigeria allegations.
Mr Wylie has said that AIQ was referred to among Cambridge Analytica staff as “our Canadian office”. He told the Guardian he helped to set up the firm as a “Canadian entity for people who wanted to work on SCL projects who didn’t want to move to London” and that he had known the firm’s co-founder, Jeff Silvester, since he was 16.
AIQ says it “has never entered into a contract with Cambridge Analytica” and that “Chris Wylie has never been employed by AggregateIQ”.
Cambridge Analytica is at the centre of a row over whether it used the personal data of millions of Facebook users to sway the outcome of the US 2016 presidential election and the UK Brexit referendum.

Hashtag analytics 101: Using the best hashtags for your social strategy
When it comes to your company’s social media marketing, hashtags are pretty much an essential part of your content strategy. These useful little links create the perfect method for finding relevant content to share, giving your audience an easy way to find your content, and grouping together like conversations.
If you’ve ever been on Twitter or Instagram, you’ve more than likely seen hashtags in use before. You’ve likely used hashtags on these platforms (and maybe more!) yourself.
Whether you’re a seasoned expert when it comes to hashtags or brand new to social marketing, there’s one thing that’s certain: you must be able to track your hashtag use. Knowing which hashtags are popular, drive people to find your content and get them talking is essential to your social strategy.
What is a hashtag?
The first hashtag ever was used on August 23, 2007, by a Twitter user named Chris Messina as a means to differentiate between groups of topics within tweets.
how do you feel about using # (pound) for groups. As in #barcamp [msg]?
— Chris Messina 🏴‍☠️ (@chrismessina) August 23, 2007
Twitter has a long history of adopting user recommendations onto their platform. For example, it was early users who referred to posts on Twitter as “Tweets” and who created @replies and retweets. And the platform just recently added the thread feature as an easy way for people to create stories via tweet.
So it wasn’t long until hashtags made their way onto the platform as an official feature. And to say they spread like wildfire would be an understatement.
Hashtags are now commonplace within social media, with platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and LinkedIn eventually implementing the searchable link feature as well. Now, hundreds of thousands of posts using hashtags are shared on social media daily.
Hashtag best practices
Since hashtags are so common, they can be used in many different ways and on many different platforms. Strategies can range from using your own branded hashtag to encourage your audience to share user-generated content or jumping on trending hashtags to create popular content.
Using hashtags isn’t a difficult or advanced part of your strategy. Check out these tips for incorporating hashtags into your social media posts.
How to find the best hashtags
Finding the best hashtags to use within your social media content is first priority. It’s not just a guessing game, although some strategic A/B testing is always a good idea. Each platform has a search bar for you to browse possible hashtags for your content, but those search features don’t always give you an idea of how popular the hashtag is.
Using a tool like RiteTag is perfect for gauging interest in hashtags on Twitter and Instagram. You can search for an industry hashtag (for example, #socialmedia) to see how popular it is, and compare it to top related hashtags.
For hashtags on Twitter, RiteTag provides a list of other relevant hashtags, how many tweets use that hashtag per hour, how many retweets that hashtag receives per hour, and how many people are seeing that hashtag per hour.  These lists are color coded, with green indicating hashtags that are hot right now, blue for those with lower immediate popularity but a longer lifespan, red for overused hashtags and gray for underused hashtags that are best to avoid.
Although this information is exclusively for Twitter, RiteTag also provides insight into Instagram hashtags based on your search. The information provided isn’t nearly as in-depth, but it can still give you a great idea of which hashtags to use within your Instagram post.
You can also check out how many people are using hashtags on Instagram by typing it into the search bar and tapping the Tags section. Click on each tag to see how many posts are using that hashtag, if anyone you follow is using that hashtag, as well as related popular hashtags.
There are also multiple ways to use Sprout Social to find and review the performance of your hashtags. You can run a search in the Discovery tab for certain hashtags and see what relevant hashtags others are using. You can also use Sprout Listeners to find out how frequently people are talking about your topic, what related terms they’re using and what the sentiment around the topic is.
How many hashtags should you use?
The number of hashtags you use depends on which platform you’re posting to. A hashtag strategy is not one-size-fits-all when it comes to the various social media networks. In fact, on some platforms, it’s better not to use hashtags in your posts.
Facebook – 0 hashtags
For example, you shouldn’t use hashtags on Facebook. The platform does make them clickable, but including them in your content doesn’t actually add any advantages. Their search doesn’t cater better to hashtags over regular search terms, and posts without hashtags actually perform better than posts that include them.
Twitter – 1-2 hashtags
Using up to two hashtags within your tweets can actually double your engagement. We’ll talk about different types of hashtags to use (and track) here in a bit, but keep this in mind every time you’re about to tweet. However, using more than two hashtags can actually decrease engagement, so maximize your hashtag use at just one or two.
Instagram – up to 30 hashtags
Instagram posts allow you to share up to 30 hashtags, and in order to maximize reach and engagement, it’s actually recommended to use up as many of those 30 as you can. This is why tools like RiteTag and the Instagram search bar are so helpful — how else are you going to get those 30 perfect hashtags?
Pinterest – 0 hashtags
Pinterest made a big announcement in 2018 about how they were bringing hashtag capabilities to its platform, and as of now, there isn’t enough data to determine if pins that include hashtags perform better than pins without. However, this platform is similar to Facebook in that its search feature doesn’t differentiate when searching for hashtags or keywords. We recommend simply including your keywords within the description, rather than within a hashtag.
LinkedIn – 2-3 hashtags
LinkedIn has also just recently added hashtags to their platform, but unlike Pinterest, they have done so while also creating a searching method that does focus on hashtags. Which means including up to three hashtags in your company’s LinkedIn post actually can help people to find your content better. Although there’s no limit to how many hashtags you can include within your post, we recommend keeping it between two and three.
How to track your hashtags
When you use hashtags, you’re increasing reach and engagement on your social media content. Hashtags are one of the most powerful organic social media strategies, but in order to maximize their performance, you need to track your hashtags.
Many brands struggle to identify which social media metrics are most important for their campaigns, and this can also be true of hashtags. With Sprout Social’s trends report, it’s incredibly easy to see which hashtags your audience is using, how they’re performing and what other topics they’re mentioned with. This lets you build your content strategy around what your audience is most interested in, rather than just latching on to hashtags that are widely popular but have little relevance to your brand or audience.
Adding those keywords and hashtags into your own tweets can help generate more engagement and buzz around your brand online. Click here to check out a sample Trends Report.
Important hashtag metrics to track
What should you actually look for when knowing a hashtag is working for your social strategy? Here are a few top metrics that can help you determine the success of a hashtag.
Popularity
How popular is the hashtag that you’re using? Hashtags that are used often tend to also be searched for often, so it’s a good idea to include hashtags in your post that have proven to be popular. You just want to make sure you’re not spamming your followers with irrelevant but trending hashtags just for popularity’s sake.
Reach
How many people actually tend to see the hashtags you’re using? If your reach isn’t very high, you’re probably not using the best hashtags. Try out some new tactics to see if you can increase the eyes on your posts, such as using a tool like Sprout to find related hashtags that are getting a lot of attention.
Interactions
Not only do you want to make sure people are using and seeing these hashtags, you want to make sure people are also interacting with them. Posting hashtagged content that gets users Retweeting and sharing will expand the reach of your campaign.
Users
Who, specifically, is using the hashtags? You want to make sure that you’re seeing users that are within your target audience using and searching for the same hashtags that you are so your message resonates.
Which hashtags to track
There are several different types of hashtags that you’ll be using in your social media content. Here’s know how and why to track each one.
Content hashtags
Content hashtags are essentially the keyword hashtags that you tag at the end or inside of your post. Going back to the example we used in this article when searching for relevant hashtags, #socialmedia would be considered a content hashtag. Your company’s industry hashtags would also be considered content hashtags.
You’ll want to track these so that you know which are the most popular content hashtags to use when sharing content like a blog post or other industry-related news. Check tools like RiteTag to understand which content hashtags are the most popular and are seen the most often.
Branded hashtags
A branded hashtag is a hashtag that your company has created and promotes as a way of tagging your company directly. For example, @KITKAT uses #KITKAT as a way to promote their product across Twitter.
📍Me | | | _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | 📍Pressing household chores | _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | l | | 📍 *Having a break, having a #KITKAT*
— KITKAT (@KITKAT) January 17, 2019
Many times, a branded hashtag is simply your company name or your company name + a keyword like your product or service.
Tracking this hashtag is a great way to see how many people are talking about your business specifically. You’ll want to use a monitoring tool like Sprout Social’s Discovery feature to keep tabs on conversations surrounding your branded hashtag.
Trending hashtags
You can easily find out which hashtags are trending by checking out your sidebar on Twitter’s desktop website or by tapping the magnifying glass icon on the smartphone app. The platform itself will let you know how many people are talking about each of the trending hashtags so you’ll know ahead of time if it’s worth incorporating into your content.
Using trending hashtags in a way that’s relevant to your content and appropriate to your brand voice can help increase viral attention on your post. Be sure to check your Twitter report to see how the impact differs from using your regular hashtags.
Event hashtags
If your company is hosting an event, if your team members are attending an industry event or conference, or if you’re tweeting about a large event going on nationally or internationally (i.e., big sporting events), be sure to incorporate the event’s hashtag in all of your posts about that event.
Live tweeting is a great way to generate traction around your event and event hashtag and increase reach and engagement on your content.
Monitoring your Sprout Social Twitter report is a great way to determine how much engagement your event chatter generated around your business and if you were able to increase your reach, follower count, and more. Doing some social listening is a great way to check in on how many people were also using the same event hashtag or discussing related topics.
Campaign/ad hashtags
A campaign/ad hashtag is a hashtag that your company creates for a specific campaign, launch, or digital advertisement. This helps to generate buzz around one specific thing that your business is doing.
For example, Starbucks will use different hashtags each time they’re promoting a new drink.
Cherries are red, Roses are too. Be sure to take a moment to celebrate you. 💕 #CherryMocha pic.twitter.com/rL0svxGUfO
— Starbucks Coffee (@Starbucks) February 7, 2019
If your company is trying to promote a new product or service launch or is running a specific campaign, creating a new hashtag for your company and your customers to use is a great way to get the buzz out. These hashtags are also great for tracking since they’re so specific to each campaign’s focus compared to your recurring brand or content hashtags.
Social listening is a great strategy for monitoring use of your campaign/ad hashtags and how well they’re catching on with your audience.

This is very much my personal pick of Cornwall’s top social media stars. The online influencers that I love and admire. The bloggers, Instagram and Twitter accounts and Facebook pages I just can’t do without!
Just a few years ago I was a real technophobe. Me and my old Nokia phone were quite happy to not be connected, thank you very much! Now four years down the road and sometimes I can’t imagine my life without social media. My blog has become such an important part of my day and every morning I love catching up with the adventures and achievements of my online friends and neighbours.
That’s why I thought it was time to share some the social media stars from Cornwall that I take such pleasure in following with you.
So check out their pages, their Twitter feeds, Instagram accounts and their blogs and enjoy!
The St Ives Mermaid
This lovely lady is one of my absolute favourite people on social media. Her life makes me smile, and it seems that she is basically living every little girl’s dream! Since 2016 Laura has been slipping into the waters in St Ives harbour and becoming a mermaid.
credit: Alastair Scarlett Photography
Laura Evans was born in Cornwall but perhaps a little like myself, came to appreciate its beauty and healing qualities after some time outside the county. When she returned home she took up paddleboarding and sea swimming. And one evening, watching the sunset over the harbour, she had an idea.
“I imagined how magical it would be if a mermaid swam into St Ives on an evening like this, and what a stir it would cause. Then I thought maybe I could be that mermaid.”
The St Ives Mermaid also recently announced her bid to become the first mermaid on Strictly Come Dancing! You can follow The St Ives Mermaid on Twitter and Instagram, where she gives regular updates in the summer as to which beach she will be swimming up on to next.
The Cornish Maid
The dulcet tones of The Cornish Maid never fail to brighten my day! And I am sure brighten the lives of many others too, especially those who, for whatever reason, aren’t able to get out and about in the Cornish countryside.
youtube
You see, the maid takes us out on walks and provides a wonderful narration as she goes. She calls it ‘walkies with talkies’. I call it fabulous!
And there are roughly 4000 people on Facebook that seem to agree with me! The maid also has her own YouTube channel were you can find an archive of her videos.
The Cornish Life
The Cornish Life blog is written and produced by Anna who, like myself began her blogging journey in 2015. Born and breed in the county Anna describes herself as a lifestyle blogger and a beach lover and her lovely posts cover everything from places to eat and stay to mental health issues and dog friendly walking.
Credit: Olivia Bossert
I started The Cornish Life in 2015 as a hobby and an ode to Cornwall; a place I enjoy living and am truly passionate about. Over the last few years my blog has grown and now acts as a resource for many people visiting the county . . My audience are mostly made up of Londoners & city dwellers who love escaping to Cornwall for their holidays.
Not only is the site gorgeous to look at but this is the kind of blog that inspires so many people to visit Cornwall and make it their home (and inspires me to do better with my own blog!). And I think it also encourages locals to discover more of what is right on their doorstep, an idea which is behind so much of my own writing. In 2018, Anna made the Cornwall’s 30 Under 30 entrepreneurs to watch list for building such an inspiring brand. **High five** Anna!
Kernow Shots
Lee Stephens, the photographer behind Kernow Shots, is of course based in Cornwall and shares with us the most stunning images on his Instagram account.
It is hardly surprising then that he has more than 48,000 followers. Each image really is dreamy – always showing Cornwall at it’s most gorgeous! They make me want to grab my camera and get out there!
Cornish Curiosities – Bisto the fungus man
Bisto is a man after my own heart. A man in love with Cornwall and it’s people. Someone who sees stories all around him and just has to share. Oh and yes he loves mushrooms too!
Credit: John Hurst
Cornish Curiosities is a relatively new page but I have now doubt that Bisto’s enthusiasm will see it become a huge hit. His photos and videos take us from one side of the county to the other, to every interesting nook and cranny.
Credit: Bisto, Rough Tor
The snippets of information Bisto gives with the images and videos on the page really are an inspiration for me and I look forward to each new post! Where will Bisto be today, that’s the question?! People think I get about but he beats me hands down!
Greg Martin – photojournalist
Many of the most interesting and dramatic images that you see in the Cornish press have been taken by Greg Martin.
Greg is probably best known for the pictures he produces for Cornwall Live, The Cornishman and the West Briton and says that he aims to focus on newsworthy images and illustrating the beauty of Cornwall.
Greg’s image of Tim Pender with his ferrets – Grace, Joy and Jason
Following Greg on social media means that you sometimes get to see those arresting images before they make it into the papers. You can find him on Facebook, Twitter and of course more often than not on the front pages too.
Sarah Jane Humphrey
Sarah is a botanical illustrator and author who has recently opened her own beautifully chic shop, Botanical Ateleir, in Falmouth.
Her Instagram account is a joy to follow, showcasing much of her stunning work.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The detail really is just breath-taking and always stops me in my tracks!
Sarah also runs illustration classes for beginners from her shop and has written a book about the art of botanical illustration so if you really feel inspired you can have a go yourself.
Aaron Jenkin – photographer
It is easy to understand why Aaron Jenkin’s nickname is ‘Mr Nightsky’. He captures awe inspiring images and then generously shares them with us all.
Born in the county his Instagram is pure indulgence, just an excuse to wallow in the beauty of Cornwall really. I love it! Deservedly Aaron has also recently been featured in a video made by the BBC about how to photograph the night sky – you can see it HERE.
Aaron also shares his photographic techniques and creative process in a number of summer night photography workshops helping others to capture the night sky.
Cornish news – Steve Heller
Cornish News is Cornwall’s alternative news outlet. Irreverent, hilarious and above all 100% Cornish through and through.
With nearly 60,000 followers on Facebook, the page was created in 2014 by Steve Heller.
Heller found fame with his musical parodies and comical songs about life in Camborne and Redruth. Since then he has developed a huge following and is fast becoming a household name in Cornwall.
Oh and he even has a pasty named after him!
A few more of my favourites:
Narrowing this list down to just a few names was pretty tough! There are so many others that I could have added. So please don’t be offended if you’re not included here!
Here’s just a few more of my ‘ones-to-watch’:
Tim Knight – Secret Landscapes Discovering so many beautiful places with Tim’s lovely images, especially those on Bodmin Moor! I look forward to each new post from him.
A Day in the Life of a  A day in the life of someone in Cornwall told through the stunning images taken by photographer Rick Davy. You can find more information about this wonderful project HERE
Aerial Cornwall Wonderful images of Cornwall from above. Say no more.
Kernow Bys Vyken! Read a fascinating tweet every day about an historical event or interesting person from Cornwall’s past.
One more for fun:
This one isn’t actually about Cornwall but, bear with me, anyone who knows me knows that I am slightly obsessed with our ancient history and big rocks. So for anyone else out there with the same ‘problem’ this Twitter account is for you!
French Postcards of Megaliths
Cornwall’s Social Media Stars – who to follow . . . This is very much my personal pick of Cornwall's top social media stars. The online influencers that I love and admire.
