maybe it's the aphantasia but i rely heavily on the phonological loop to remember the spelling of unfamiliar words, which is a problem when i don't know how to pronounce the word...i remember in college it used to always take such a long time to look up a french word i'd just read because in the two seconds it took to pull up wordreference or open my dictionary i'd forgotten how it was spelled and was relying on my own pronunciation of it, which is problematic because 1) french has a lot of ways to spell the same sounds and 2) i can't even pronounce/distinguish all the sounds of french so my version of french has fewer sounds and therefore even more ways to spell those sounds. so i'd look up the wrong spelling sometimes multiple times before finding the actual entry. this still happens but much less frequently because i'm just more familiar with the lexicon of french (and i can distinguish/make more of the sounds) than i was in college. still a huge problem in any other language though.
#this is why that dream was so rude. you expect me to remember the spelling of words i can't pronounce?#but i can only remember words based on pronunciation...#interestingly i've always been very good at english spelling which famously has a very erratic relationship with pronunciation#so that has just been memorization of each individual word i think. and like general feelings about the types of letters that are likely#to be next to each other in an english word...i sound like a neural network#wait. i do have neurons. in a network. neural networks were named after us...#ummmm i'm sleep deprived can u tell lol#fun with pronunciation#psycholinguistics#<-you'd think someone who has a tag for psycholinguistics would know about human neurons being in networks. and yet#my posts
