Stuck in the Shadows with You
Part 6! (part4 on Ao3)
-----------
read on ao3
https://archiveofourown.org/works/40386417/chapters/101570457
------------
The temple isnât hard to find despite its dilapidated façade, and when Macaque sees one of the demons MK had been fighting duck under the wooden boards, he relinquishes his magic and the shadow clones fade into nothingness.
This time, he wonât be taken by surprise. He doesnât need anyone else getting hurt on his behalf.
Macaque slinks into the shadows and peeks out in the hollows of empty spaces, gauging how many were holed up in the building before chuckling to himself.
âOnly ten?â He thinks. âI think I can handle that.â
Itâs nothing for him to frighten seven of the demon around the temple with a little illusion and some shadows â not even magic shadows, mind you. He lures the frightened demons into darkened halls with a myriad of spooky noises and spine-tingling cold breezes, whipped up with little more than a flick of his finger.
The magic he uses is minimal, and barely burns compared to the set of shadow clones heâd summoned earlier, but the steady ache in his chest only grows with each passing minute.
When the demons are cowering and covering their eyes, he leaps, knocks them unconscious, and locks them in a room. Â Easy enough.
Macaque groans as he hefts the seventh grunt over his shoulder.
âI swear, you lot have progressively getting heavier. Are yâall hiding rocks in your pockets or something?â He flings the unconscious demon into an empty room and with a tired flick of his wrist, ropes tie themselves around the demon and a calling card; a little purple smirking monkey, settles on top like a bow.
âSeven down, three more to go.â Macaque cracks his knuckles and sighs.
He walks down the creaky hall, ignoring the eerie feeling that creeps along his fur. The worn wooden doors swing in a phantom breeze, and he almost snorts as ghostly whispers echo in the distance.
âReally? You saw what I did to your other guys, right? You know Iâm not going to fall for my own tricks, right?â He raises an eyebrow as a white mist begins to pool around his ankles.
âTrickster, false champion.â Is whispered in his ear in her voice and he whips around so fast that the mist wrapped around his legs dissipates before creeping forward once more.
âYouâre dead. The kid, the kid defeated you.â His voice shakes, but the demon couldnât care less as he steps backwards.
Thereâs nothing there but ghostly giggles and fading mist, and Macaque steels himself, growling before dropping into the shadows.
Heâs been playing with tricks and shadows for too long, he reasons as he slips into the main alter room, itâs starting to get to him. Sheâs gone, dead as ashes in the wind. Someoneâs fucking with him.
Itâs the last thought that has him grinding his teeth. This whole thing with his shadow and Wukong couldâve been avoided if everyone had just left him alone. Buddha forbid he get even a moments rest in his life. Â
His whole chest feels like itâs on fire at this point, and thereâs a tingling numbness in his fingers that has never boded well, but Macaque ignores the warning signs and looks around.
The hall is empty except for three golden statues situated against the back wall.
âOf course, itâs the Taoists.â Macaque mutters to himself as he squints at the deities. Did one of them just blink?
Macaque swears as he bends backwards, slamming his head on the wooden floor and narrowly avoiding a bolt of lightning that emanated from the middle statue.
He scampers backwards, and half merges with the shadows, waiting to see if the statues move further or if it was just a onetime freak of nature bolt of indoor lightning. Â
Peaking his good eye out, he sees the statues begin to twist and stand. Just as he thought, Goat Strength Immortal, Deer Strength Immortal, and Tiger Strength Immortal step out from their hiding spot.
âI thought impersonating your gods was blasphemous,â Macaque taunts from the shadows, slowly circling the room, trying and failing to find an exit not blocked by the three false immortals.
âWhen one faces Sun Wukong, they tend to lose a little faith,â TSI says calmly, his eyes roving across the shadows.
âTell me about it,â Macaque huffs under his breath, and spins out of the shadows from behind the immortals, sending them flying like bowling pins before melting back into the shadows with a cackle.
âImpudent demon!â GSI wails, and clutches the back of his head. Â Â
âSo, you want to play, monkey?â DSI scowls, and draws his sword, lightning and thunder brimming from the blade.
âWell, thatâs certainly easier than prayers and burning diagrams.â Macaque muses as a storm unleashes itself in the hall.
âFoolish Buddhist!â Yells one of the false gods, and he scowls as he ducks another bolt of lightning.
âIâm not even religious!â He shouts back, and the trio gasps in shock. He takes advantage of the pause to shuck himself into the corner and hunker down behind a table before the barrage returns, almost doubled in ferocity.
âThatâs even worse!â Another howls.
âYouâre not even real Taoists!â Macaque hollers out, and when the air temperature drops by five degrees, he thinks that maybe, just maybe, he should have kept his big mouth shut for once.
The table is upended with one hand by TSI, and then heâs being hoisted into the air by the front of his robes by GSI before he can blink.
âYou shut your mouth,â GSI shakes him, and he digs his claws into the arm holding him.
âShutting my mouth, got it.â He snarks, and the Goat scowls at him before heâs thrown to the floor.
Breathing deeply, he tries to sink into the shadows, to portal, anything, but a flair of pain has him muffling a groan and curling into a ball on the floor. Â
âGet the cuffs,â Tiger Strength Immortal says, and Macaque blanches. If they mean demon suppression cuffs, he could die. They would sap the rest of his magic in nothing flat, and then heâd dissolve into nothingness.
He weakly kicks at the floor, scooting backwards as the Deer looms over him, and he flinches as hands reach for him.
âFuck,â Macaque hisses, and he shoves through the pain to tug at his connection with his shadow, hoping he merges in the right direction.
Everything hurts, he canât breathe, and he collapses to his knees with a cry, not registering heâd been standing in the first place.
âMacaque!â Hands reach for him, and he flinches again as someone brushes cool hands over his brow.
âWhat the fuck happened? Where did you go?â Wukong, it had to be Wukong, cries out, his voice bleeding concern.
Ha, thereâs a funny thought, he blearily thinks. Wukong, worried about me.
Thatâs the last thought he has for a while as he sinks into darkness.
When he opens his eyes next, thereâs a flicker of surprise that heâs awake at all, before he registers, heâs cradled against a familiar chest on a familiar couch.
Macaque tries to yank himself off of Wukong, but the stone monkey has both arms wrapped around his waist, effectively trapping him.
âNoho.â Wukong whines and tightens his grip around Macaque.
âSleep.â The tired god crossly orders, exhaustion coating his voice.
âWukong, let me go.â Macaque tries to growl, but his threating tone lacks any true heat as he feels his arms tremble with strain just from trying to hold himself up.
âIn the morning. Weâll-â Wukong yawns before continuing, âtalk in the morning. JustâŚget some sleep.â
âIâll kill you.â Macaque promises as his arms give out, and he tiredly rubs his face against the otherâs chest.
âI know.â Wukong mutters.

Fate and Phantasms #193
Today on Fate and Phantasms weâre building the new guy everyone knows and loves, Prince Nezha! Theyâre an Ascendant Dragon Monk for their fire wheels and spear skills, as well as a Strength Cleric to pick up all those sacred treasures they get while still being the stabby stabby bot we all adore.
(Iâll be perfectly upfront right now; we did not have the time to read through Investiture of the Gods and Journey to the West to make one character, so theyâll be getting all the sacred treasures that we found while binging OSPâs videos on the latter. Also, lots of anti-demon stuff. You donât need first-hand knowledge of a series to know that the âDemon-Hacking Bladeâ probably has some anti-demon features in it.)
Anyways, check out their build breakdown below the cut, or their character sheet over here!
Next up: The Mysterious Miss Moolah!
Race and background
Nezhaâs more clay than metal, but theyâre still hanging out in an artificial body, thatâs a Warforged. They get +2 Constitution and +1 to any stat, so +1 Wisdom, as well as Constructed Resilience, so you donât have to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep, donât get sick, and have advantage and resistance to poison effects. Instead of sleeping, you take a Sentryâs Rest, spending 6 hours awake but not moving. You also get Integrated Protection for +1 AC. Thereâs more to it, but youâre a monk, you donât use armor anyway. Finally, your Specialized Design gives you proficiency in one skill, I picked Animal Handling for the same reason I grabbed it for Nero. If you can âhandleâ the king of the monkeys, the rest should fall in line.
I meant beating him up, donât be gross.
You respect your coworkers, which means to mortals youâd probably be an Acolyte, which gives you proficiency with Insight and Religion.
Ability Scores
Wisdom comes from making mistakes, and dear god have you made some doozies, so make that number one. Second highest should be Dexterity, you can fly, but only by balancing on wheels. Thatâs a high-stakes highwire act. Your Strength is next- going toe-to-toe with the monkey king requires a lot of it. Your Constitution is also above average, the zhenren sages donât skimp on their designs. This means your Intelligence will be a bit low since we donât need it for the build, but weâre dumping Charisma. Thereâs a bit of a disconnect between you and others, and also you have a lot of self-loathing issues to work through, which just makes hanging out a bit awkward.
Class Levels
Monk 1: Starting off as a monk gives you plenty of goodies, like proficiency in Strength and Dexterity saves, Acrobatics for balance, and History. I cannot emphasize enough about how all these servant builds should probably just get free history proficiency. You also get Unarmored Defense, which adds to your Integrated Protection for a total AC of 11+ your dex mod + your wisdom modifier. That brings your current AC up to 16 for a start, not bad. You also get Martial Arts so your monk attacks deal at least 1d4 (which grows as you level up), can use your dexterity instead of strength, and if you make one of those attacks as your action you can make another attack as a bonus action. Spears are simple weapons and versatile, not two-handed, so youâre in the clear.
Cleric 1: Weâre gonna bounce over to cleric right away to become a worshiper of Strength. When you become an Acolyte of Strength, you learn one Druid cantrip, and gain proficiency with another skill- in this case, Athletics. For your free cantrip, grab Shillelagh. I know it says club or quarterstaff, but just hold the spear backwards. If gives you a d8 for damage, turns the weapon magical, and you can use Wisdom to attack with it instead of dexterity or strength. While weâre on the topic, you also get Spells now that use your Wisdom to cast and prepare. That means you donât have a hard and fast spell list, but you can switch things up each long rest. For cantrips, Spare the Dying gives you beans of immortality that you can pop into a creatureâs mouth as an action to stabilize them. You also get Sacred Flame for sacred flames, and Thaumaturgy to show off your celestial origins. As a strength cleric youâll always have Divine Favor and Shield of Faith on tap, but you can also use Detect Evil and Good and Protection from Evil and Good for demon fighting.
Monk 2: Weâre not going to focus on cleric too much though, we have martial arts to learn. At second level, you get Ki points equal to your monk level each short rest, letting you attack twice, dodge, disengage, or dash as a bonus action. You also get Unarmored Movement, adding to your speed as you level up.
Monk 3: At third level you can finally set down the Way of the Ascendant Dragon, making your fists a lot more fiery. Youâre now a Draconic Disciple as well as a cleric, so when you hit a creature with your fists or feet you can deal bludgeoning damage as normal, or acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison. Obviously fire is the most in character, but thereâs probably a baobei that works for the other elements if you really want them. You can also spend your reaction to re-roll a failed intimidation or persuasion check, succeeding once per long rest. I guess Nezha can be kind of scary when they want to be. You can also use the Breath of the Dragon, replacing one of your normal attacks with a cone or line of acid, cold, fire, lighting, or poison damage, forcing a dexterity save against your ki save (DC 8 + proficiency + wisdom modifier), taking 2 rolls of your martial arts die on a failure, or half as much on a success. If that monkey kingâs modern iteration can get beam weapons so can you. You get Proficiency free uses per long rest, but you can use it more by spending 1 ki point per use. Finally, you can react to someone shooting you with an arrow to Deflect Missiles, reducing the damage, If itâs reduced to 0, you can spend a ki point to launch it back at them.
Cleric 2: Back into cleric for a hot second. Second level clerics can Channel Divinity in one of two ways per short rest. Turn Undead makes nearby undead run if they fail a wisdom save, but you can also use a Feat of Strength to add +10 to an attack roll or strength check/save. The Zhenren really donât mess around.
Monk 4: Fourth level monks get their first Ability Score Improvement, so improve that Wisdom for a higher AC, better shillelagh attacks, and stronger fire powers. You also learn how to Slow Fall as a reaction so falling off your wheels isnât quite as big an issue.
Monk 5: Fifth level monks get an Extra Attack per attack action, bringing your total in a turn up to two with just an action, three with your martial arts bonus action, or four with flurry of blows. You can also turn those attacks into Stunning Strikes by spending ki. This forces a constitution save on the creature you just hit, stunning them if they fail until the end of your next turn.
Monk 6: Sixth level monks get Ki-Empowered Strikes for magical unarmed attacks. If youâre fighting a triply immortal monkey itâs best to prep as much as possible. You also get the reason weâre here in the first place, Wings Unfurled. Now when you use your ki points to dash as a bonus action you get dragon wings for a turn, giving you a flying speed equal to your walking speed until the end of your turn. If youâre in the air, you will fall, but to be fair Nezha mostly uses this to go like, 20 feet up and divebomb someone, so itâs not a huge restriction. You can fly Proficiency times per long rest, or by spending a ki point each extra time you use it.
Monk 7: Our final level of monk gets you Evasion for better dexterity saves. You probably know the drill by now- failures are now as good as most peopleâs successes, and successes negate all damage. You also get a Stillness of Mind, letting you end a charming or frightening effect as a bonus action. Just hit ctrl alt delete on BeScared.exe, not hard.
Cleric 3: Now that your training is complete, itâs time to quest for all those sacred treasures. Starting off strong at third level, you get second level cleric spells, including the freebies Enhance Ability and Protection from Poison. You can also make a Spiritual Weapon to summon whatever demon-slaying tool you might need, creating a floating weapon as a bonus action thatâll move around and deal force damage if you use it each bonus action for up to 1 minute. Alternatively, you can use Hold Person to summon the Diamond Snare/Wukongâs headband/The five Golden Rings (thereâs a lot of sacred treasures that focus on immobilization) to force a wisdom save on one humanoid. If they fail, theyâre paralyzed for a while, or until they succeed on a save. Paralysis is nasty too, it gives attacks advantage to hit plus guaranteed crits when they do.
Cleric 4: Use this ASI to bump up your Dexterity for better unarmed strikes and a better AC. You also get the Light cantrip to use your fire constructively.
Cleric 5: Fifth level clerics get a boost to Turn Undead, âturnâing it into Destroy Undead instead. If a creature of CR 1/2 or lower gets caught in it, itâs just gone. You also get third level spells like Haste and Protection From Energy. Either get out of the way of the beam weapons, or shield yourself from them. Alternatively, grab spells like Spirit Shroud for a more heavenly aura, or Speak with Dead. You can literally just go to the afterlife to talk to them, what like itâs hard?
Cleric 6: You can now Channel Divinity twice per short rest, and you can also use that divinity to give out Rhonasâ Blessing! Itâs like feat of strength, but it has a range of 30Ⲡinstead of self. Youâre not the kind of person to hang out with weaklings.
Cleric 7: Seventh level clerics get fourth level spells. Dominate Beast is Wukongâs headband but for all sorts of creatures, and Stoneskin... yeah. You can also use Death Ward for an actual immortality bean that prevents one case of koing, Guardian of Faith to call in a favor from another celestial, or Banishment to make Lao Tzu take his goddamn pets back. If the target isnât from another plane, theyâre just gone for about a minute.
Cleric 8: Eighth level clerics get another ASI to max out your Wisdom for the best attacks, good defense, and stronger spells. Destroy Undead bumps up to CR 1, and you get a Divine Strike once per turn, adding 1d8 of an existing damage type to your weapon attack. They donât call you âlancerâ for nothing. Actually they do, you should be called âspear-erâ, I guess.
Cleric 9: You get fifth level spells! Your freebies are Destructive Wave and Insect Plague, which arenât super in character, but they do sound like something a sacred treasure could do. You can also call down a Flame Strike for some real fire power, turn your spear into a Holy Weapon for even more damage, Dispel Evil and Good to roll protection from E&G and a faster banishment into a single spell, or you can Summon Celestial to call down a coworker to help out. You get either an Avenger or a Defender, the former dealing more damage and the latter giving allies temporary HP.
Cleric 10: At tenth level you finally get a direct line back home, letting you call them up for some Divine Intervention. Itâs a percent chance based on your cleric level, but if you succeed itâs basically up to the DM how much help you get. You can do this once per day, or after a week when it works. You also get the Resistance cantrip. Youâre tough, it tracks.
Cleric 11: Destroy Undead hits CR 2, and you get sixth level spells. Planar Ally summons a celestial coworker for as long as you can pay them, but be prepared, it can be steep. You can also use Sunbeam for more fire.
Cleric 12: Use your last ASI to bump up Dexterity again. You know the drill, more AC, better unarmed attacks, the works.
Cleric 13: Your final level gets you seventh level spells, letting you Conjure Celestial for a much cheaper celestial companion thatâll stick with you for up to 1 hour. You can also Plane Shift to visit the heavens for yourself.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
Flight is always good to have, event if itâs a limited trial version like yours. Hop over to where you should be, and keep out of range of anyone you donât feel like fighting.
Strength Clerics are basically war clerics but better, and Feat of Strength will make it really easy for you to grapple, lift, push, or just be the powerhouse of the team.
Clerics are really versatile casters, getting healing, buffs, utility, and damaging spells, so your spell list will always be handy. On top of that, your dragon fists let you pick your element when you hit people, so you wonât be completely hosed by fire resistant enemies.
Cons:
You have limited resources for your best abilities, with only 7 ki points and 2 channel divinities per short rest. Wings Unfurled might let you instant transmission, but you wonât be able to spam it like they do on Dragon Ball Z, sorry.
For a strength-focused subclass, your strength score is pretty underwhelming. Sure, you can use Feat of Strength to power yourself up, but odds are thereâs someone else who could put Rhonasâ Blessing to better use. Learn to share, itâll help.
You also have a really low charisma, so donât be surprised if you get into fights more often than youâd think. Also, itâs a good thing you got plane shift at level 20, because you might get banished a lot.

Monkey, enraged at the imposter, returns to Flower Fruit Mountain and immidently attacks the other "Monkey". They fight themselves all over heaven, earth and the underworld but nobody can/dares to reveal the imposter. Wukong still beyond pissed about it all and kills Macaque much to Budda's dismay and Guynyin brings Monkey back to the group and tells Tripitaka that Budda said he should let Wukong back into the group.
Heya LMK Fandom!
I finally got my hands on all 5 Seasons of LMK and while watching S1, I started to wonder which characters/artifacts are from Journey to the West. Down the rabbit hole I go, starting a list that's all about that. For now I used a chapter summary as well as an Episodeguide, cause I haven't read the book yet and Overly Sarcastics Productions (YT channel) to start off and now a PDF of the translated version by Anthony C. Yu. (One of two full translations of Journey to the West) And while I go on and on, I think to myself, maybe somebody else would like to see that list as well, so I decided to post it here. |Character Analysis|
[ Jeremiah - White Bone Spirit/Demon (Journey to the West)] Another notable character Jeremiah is similar to would be the White Bone Spirit/Demon in the Journey to the West tales. Through all the remakes, versions and series that have been made from the books the gist of this character is that they are a shape-shifting spirit/demoness who would eventually become a part of the number of ghouls that have tried to eat Xuan Zang after hearing legends that consuming this monkâs flesh would bestow them immortality. She would eventually be killed by the Monkey King. Their similarities lies in their schemes: Supplementing their areas of weaknesses/flaws with subterfuge, manipulation and trickery.Â
Much like Jeremiah who relies on false, embellished versions of the truth to get his way, the White Bone Spirit takes on disguises in an attempt to sow discord among the monk and priests because she understands she is no match for the monkâs disciples if they were to band together.  Both she and Jeremiah are both strategic planners- aiming to isolate their target, to prey and rely on the manipulation of emotions to get to their ultimate goal.Â
In some renditions, the White Bone Spirit poses as one of the key antagonistic forces that were instrumental to the challenging of loyalty between the Monkey King and the Monkâs bonds. This parallels Jeremiahâs attempts to isolate Bruce, plant destructive seeds with his perception of people and his relations to them (having repeatedly and willingly demonstrated that he would hurt them just because they are close to him). I will also mention that in SOME renditions (most notable: The Monkey King Quest for the Sutra (2002)), it is implied/retold in a manner that reveals the White Bone Spiritâs attraction towards the Monkey King. She would continue to be a source of distraction and emotional entanglement for the Monkey King- although itâs clear she is attached to him, his feelings towards her are complicated at best and ultimately the pairing was a bittersweet one. This also parallels Jeremiahâs fixation towards people like Bruce (and Jerome but we do not talk about this). Both of their fixations with the other party were established due to emotional connection, the feeling that they were seen and understood.Â

@knife-filled-plushies
Monkey is very stronk, yes.
Wukong was also born from a stone, fun fact, and is actually a stone monkey. Heâs one of the four celestial monkeys, the âIntelligent Stone Monkeyâ. The other three are the âSix-Eared Macaqueâ, the âLong-armed Gibbonâ and the âRed-bottomed Horse Monkeyâ. Wukong is meant to represent the human mind, and the circlet represents morals and maturity, because before the circlet Wukong was an arrogant, egotistical and vain king who did whatever he pleased and threw a tantrum when someone tried to stop him from doing something. Wukong is also 1,100 years old by the end of the Journey To The West, and is immortal eight times over. The first immortality was gained by learning the secret to immortality under Subodhi (a method Heaven doesnât approve of), the second was from him erasing his name from the book of life and death, the third was from eating the immortality peaches from Heavenâs peach orchard (specifically the ones that granted immortality until the existence of everything ended), the fourth was from drinking immortal wine, the fifth came from eating immortality pills, the sixth came from the trigram furnace (one of the attempted executions), the seventh came from eating ginseng fruit during his Journey, the eighth came from the end of his Journey when he ate food provided by Buddha. So, yes, Monkey King is incredibly powerful and very popular.
Continually filling your mutual's dash with your blorbo like some sort of missionary trying to convert them
#and yes he is everywhere#thereâs so much heâs inspired in and has made appearances in i wouldnât be surprised if heâs unintentionally influenced the modern day world
