I keep forgetting that some people can only do art on big tablets. I ONLY do art on my phone. I have a drawing tablet and I do not use it bc I prefer the small screen and holding it in my hand. Sorry.

Woke up alone in this hotel room
Played with myself, where were you?
It was seven when Draco finally decided to stop fighting the insomnia. Thoughts of you claiming his mind and making him entirely unable to find sleep. The white hotel sheets were curled around him, pillows on the floor, broken glass shattered around him like an unholy halo, and the room in total disarray. He laid there, staring at the ceiling, unsure of what to do with himself, unsure of what to do with himself now that he had lost you. He so desperately wished that he could squeeze his eyes shut only to open them and find you laying there next to him, wishing desperately to see that incredible beaming smile of yours, the one that would turn your cheeks rosy red.
He rose from the bed and navigated around the mess on the floor to get to the bar in the room. With a heavy hand he poured himself a scotch, as he continued to think of you; the feeling of your lips on his, the lines of witty banter you always seemed to whip out of nowhere, and the idea that he may never hear the rasp of your voice in the morning again.
Fell back to sleep, I got drunk by noon
I’ve never felt less cool
He abandoned the glass dragged the bottle back to the bed, putting on the television as a distraction. He couldn’t seem to find a program that didn’t make him think of you, he couldn’t get the sound of your sweet and joyous laugh echoing through whatever space you held.
Tears streamed down his face as he downed the scotch, he felt like an absolute child. Crying over a girl, drinking, and sleeping. The pattern was pathetic and the last thing Draco Malfoy was, was pathetic. Yet it seems you could reduce him down to a blubbering child and all he would think of is how terribly he missed you, and how badly he wanted to smell your deep ambrosial perfume. By the time he woke up again the digital clock next to the bed was flashing 12:13 as if it was mocking him, goading him to wake up and get over himself.
We haven’t spoke since you went away
Comfortable silence is so overrated
Why won’t you ever be the first one to break?
Even my phone misses your call, by the way
Your voicemail, the one you had recorded with him, your voice was happy, and it sounded as if you would never be sad again.
“You’ve got Y/n” joyful, happy, in love. “I am buuuuusy and I am so very sorry I missed your call but shoot me a text or leave a voicemail after the beep and we shall speak at another time! Thanks.”
“Y/n, darling?” he muttered. “Look I know that I fucked up, and that you don’t want to talk but can we please just go get coffee, I want to see you, and I don’t want to end things on that note. Please, I know that we aren’t getting back together, I just, Y/n I need to see you.”
“You’ve got Y/n! I am buuuuusy and I am so very sorry I missed your call but shoot me a text or leave a voicemail after the beep and we shall speak at another time! Thanks,” Draco was mocked by the shrill beep that followed the sound of your voice.
“Hey, I’m sorry about all the voicemail’s and all of the text messages, if you don’t want to see me please just tell me so. Look I just, Y/n, I am miserable and I really just want to apologize for everything face to face. Please don’t just ignore me.”
“You’ve got Y/n! I am buuuuusy and I am so very sorry I missed your call but shoot me a text or leave a voicemail after the beep and we shall speak at another time! Thanks,” Draco listened solemnly as the voicemail played wishing this wasn’t the only way he could hear your voice.
“Look, I get it if you don’t want to talk to me, just, tell me yourself don’t just ignore me. Please,” he was desperate, to see you without tears streaming down your face, tears he had caused.
I saw your friend that you know from work
He said you feel just fine
I see you gave him my old t-shirt
More of what was once mine
Weeks past and Draco didn’t hear back from you. He knew that you were forcing him to move on and he didn’t want to accept it but he knew that he had no other choice. He was back to work, back to normal, although no matter what he did he couldn’t seem to get the thought of you out his head. He was drinking, more than usual, smoking more than usual, and he had destroyed his fair share of hotel rooms. It was time for him to start living his life again.
You had always loved coffee, going to coffee shops, trying out different drinks, people watching, you had made the whole ordeal a habit for Draco and now it was a way for him to hold onto you. He thought that if he was lucky enough he’d catch you at one of them.
Today he went before work, luckily he had skipped the morning coffee shop rush and there were just a few other people inside the shop.
“I’ll have a black drip coffee, and a croissant,” he said, handing the barista money.
“Here’s your change, and it’ll all come up at that bar over there,” she said gesturing to the end of the bar.
“Thanks,” Draco said kindly as he stepped over to where the barista had gestured to wait for his order.
“Malfoy,” he heard a familiar voice.
“Potter,” Draco said, surprised to see the man you had both gone to school with, and who you now worked with.
“Nice to see you, what have you been up to recently” Harry asked him.
“Just work,” Draco observed Harry, the man he had always been so jealous of, for a moment when his eyes caught something similar. “That’s a bit of a posh shirt for you isn’t it?”
“Ah- it was in Y/n’s flat, I mean she gave it to me because it was in her flat and it’s my size and all that.”
“Got it. I think that’s mine,” he said, his eyes still on the shirt as the barista placed his coffee and pastry on the bar in front of them. “Tell Y/n I say hi?”
“Sure thing mate, she’s uh doing pretty alright,” Harry offered and Draco nodded, swiftly exiting the coffee shop refusing the urge to start crying over you again.
I see it’s written, it’s all over his face
Comfortable silence is so overrated
Why won’t you ever be the first one to break?
Even my phone misses your call, by the way
Potter. You had to choose Potter of all the men you knew to sleep with. It was as if you were trying to hurt him, trying to drive the knife further into his heart. That night Draco proceeded to call you all of thirteen times, four of the calls sober, and the other nine varying levels of drunk until he finally blacked out.
All he wanted was to hold you one more time, to hear you talk over a movie, shout out the lyrics to some old Bon Jovi song, watch you dance atop your kitchen table, you were always the perfect antagonist to silence and now it seemed that silence was all he could hear. People would speak to him and he couldn’t hear it, he would try and remember the sound of you, your singing, your voice, your laugh, but his memories of you were only pictures.
Maybe one day you’ll call me and tell me that you’re sorry too
But you, you never do
The ringer on his phone was always on, and when it buzzed he picked it up as quickly as a man could. Although, he was routinely disappointed to find that it was either Blaise, his boss, his mum, or a hotel calling to let him know of the damages done and the charges he would incur. But it didn’t matter, none of those calls mattered because they weren't you.
He just wanted you back, and all he could do was call and call, while picturing you lying in Harry Potter’s arms. You had chosen to be with Potter, and you had chosen to leave Draco, and Draco just couldn’t cope with your choices.
Woke up the girl who looked just like you
I almost said your name
He didn’t know this ones name, and he didn’t know the last one’s name. These girls that circled through his bed, each of them vaguely resembling you in one way or another. Today he awoke to seeing your nose, and your hair on someone else. Sleeping with these women upset him more than it comforted him, but it was at least something to do with himself.
“Y/-” he stopped himself. “Hey, I’ve got to go to work.” He said, shaking the girl awake.
“Can’t I just leave after you?” She groaned, her eyes still closed.
“No, get up,” Draco said as he got out of bed and pulled the duvet off of her. “Now,”
“Fine, I’m going,” she said, taking her time to draw herself up. “And I promise I won’t be back.”
And there she went, another person lost whether he wanted her or not. All he knew how to do was drive people away. He didn’t want to get over you, ever since your trip to New York you had been the love of his life. But now he resolved to living his life as a ghost, constantly in terrible silence without you.
Comfortable silence is so overrated
Why won’t you ever be the first one to break?
Even my phone misses your call, by the way

an introductory rec list (that no one asked for) to some of my favorite ships: wolfstar [1/10]
First fic I read for the pairing: Where Rain And Smoke Mingle by smallestbird [1k,T] It doesn't matter if they've disowned you, they're still your family. It doesn't matter how often you walk away, it still hurts. [it’s a bit dreary, but the writing style is so nice and i’m a big sucker for hurt/comfort]
Fic that really sold me on the pairing: Of Brothers and Boyfriends by Amuly [38k,E] There’s no summary on the fic, but, essentially, Remus and Sirius’s secret relationship gets found out and things get… complicated. (warning for homophobia) [My note on my ao3 bookmark pretty much sums up how I feel about this fic: Honestly one of my favorites (and one of the stories that really got me hooked on Wolfstar tbh) and I've read it at least eight times. However, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about the homophobic James Potter (even though he does come around).]
Absolute favorite fic(s) for the pairing: Text Talk by merlywhirls [141k,Not Rated] Sirius is in boarding school, Remus is in hospital, and they don't know each other until Sirius texts the wrong number. (warnings for homophobia, mentions of abuse, and homophobic language) [One of the earlier fics I read and it’s always just been one of my favorites, even though it’s been 3 years since I read it for the first time.] Harry Potter and the Live Laugh Love Sign in the Basement by loudestfandomsoftheworld [24k,T] Harry spends his summer with his fugitive godfather and his former professor who is a jobless werewolf. It's probably the best summer he's ever had. [The humor, the characterizations, their relationships, it’s all so fucking perfect!!] Go East [+Podfic] by xinasvoice [84k,E] Remus has been running for a long time. Eventually, he runs into a strange castle built by a wizard and his young apprentice. The longer he stays, the more secrets he uncovers...and the less he wants to leave. This is a novel-length adventure story that loosely follows the plot of Howl's Moving Castle. It does not require knowledge of the HMC book or movie to enjoy it. [it made me laugh, it made me cry, and it’s plot is based on one of my all time favorite movies? 11/10] Of Queries and Quarantines by MoonCat457 [51k,E] LUPIN.RJ: James, WHY? POTTER.JF: Because you’re the one currently doing the job, so it makes sense that you’d be the one to train the person hired to take your place. LUPIN.RJ: No, I mean why is Monty hiring a new editor in the middle of a fucking pandemic? POTTER.JF: An old friend of mine is in a tough spot and needs a job, so of course, dad is helping him out. - - - - OR A story set in the middle of the pandemic in which Sirius is hired at the Potter’s publishing company and Remus is responsible for training him. Lots of texting, lots of video calls, lots of mutual pining, and a lot of really bad literature quotes. [i’ve largely avoided quarantine au fics, but sometimes they’re so well-written and hilarious and also a texting fic and i accidentally fall in love with them, so here we are.]
Most recent fic I’ve read for the pairing: There Is No Man, However Wise by enigmaticblue [87k,T] It’s 1988, Sirius has Harry, and possession is nine-tenths of the law. [i adore a good raising harry au and i also adore the premise of the series this is in and i also adore the writing story and characterizations. 10/10]
Favorite AU(s) I’ve read for the pairing: High School AU: Likewise Variable by ssstrychnine [28k,T] James has plans, Peter is the nurse, Sirius keeps fake blood up his sleeves, and Remus just tries to stay alive. [i first read this fic in 2017 and it still lives rent free in my mind. it’s hilarious, a perfect characterization of the marauders (even tho it’s a muggle modern high school au) and adding shakespeare? just icing on the fucking cake. it’s excellent.] University AU: Wannabe Your Lover by Maraudererasmut & shadow_prince [15k,M] Somewhere in America, Fall of 1997 - Returning to University, James refused to room with Sirius in the wake of The Great Cheez-it Battle of '96. They must adjust to living with someone new, Mr. Potter worried they'd both get scurvy, James unsuccessfully continued trying to court one Lily Evans, Snape got what was coming to him, and Sirius was the most confused of them all. [this is the university experience we all wish we had, lowkey. aside from the hilarity that comes from having the marauders in a fic, it’s just cute and well-written and i love it (and southern remus??? it’s everything i never knew i needed.] Alternate Sorting AU (Slytherin Remus): Half Agony, Half Hope by Barry_Manilows_Wardrobe [21k,E] A tale wherein Sirius Black loses 750 House Points for Gryffindor. But it’s totally worth it. [listen, if, before i read this fic, you asked me if remus could’ve been a slytherin, my answer would have been “perhaps but probably not.” now, however, yeah. 100%. it’s hilarious, it’s novel (which i love to see), but it’s still the same remus and sirius and it’s excellent.] Haunted House AU: Another Day in the Sun by REwrites [19k,T] Is it haunted? I suppose that depends on who is telling the story. [really really excellent and a little haunting (pun entirely intended). it’s romantic and sweet and a little bittersweet but i adore it.]
WIP(s) I really love for the pairing: We Were Infinite by WolfstarPups90 [336k,E] “The Marauders aren’t something that will just go away once we graduate.” James continued, taking a more serious tone and addressing not only Remus, but the fear that they all had found recently in the back of their minds about what may become of them outside the walls of Hogwarts. “We’re a family. We’ve proven that again and again, haven’t we? We’re forever. Unstoppable. We’re infinite.” The full story of The Marauders from September 1st 1971 - October 31st 1981. (Heavily centered around Wolfstar and Jily in later chapter) [the first WIP i ever read (usually i stick to completed works, but this was being pretty regularly updated when i started reading it and also it’s fucking iconic so what can i say?)] Of Leaves and Stars by irrationalmoony & LadyAmina [273k,T] Almost a year out of Hogwarts, Lily finally manages to convince Sirius and James to get more acquainted with muggle technology and buy phones. Sirius, of course, texts the wrong number. [everyone is queer! (as they well should be). also: is it complete? no. has that stopped me from reading it twice? also no.]
Favorite Series for the pairing: TransVerse by picascribit [30k,E,2 works] Canon-divergent AU in which Remus is a transgender boy instead of being a werewolf. (warnings for underage, transphobia, internalized transphobia, bullying, self-harm) [i am a trans remus stan and this series is iconic, but also heed the tags kids.]
Longest fic I’ve read for the pairing: Once in a Blue Moon by FullMoonDreams [408k,M] In a world where Remus never received his Hogwarts invitation and Sirius wasn't accepted by the Gryffindors the two lonely boys become friends. A story beginning in their first year, and continuing right through Hogwarts and beyond. RLSB. [this fic emotionally ruined me,,, but like,,, in a good way, you know? i will probably never reread it because i cried for hours the first time, but the plot does live rent free in my mind (and i do have a playlist of songs that remind me of it).]
Fic(s) with some of my favorite tropes: Matchmaking: Pining, Parchment, Plotting, and Pranks by KayBee1762 [12k,T] “Idea parchment,” James said. He unfolded it and smoothed it out. “You want to get them together, right? That’s why you came to me?” “Yeah,” Lily huffed, which was ridiculous because he was right, that’s why she came to him. But it was supposed to be her idea, because she wanted to help her dear friend Remus, not James or Sirius. But it was so nice to be able to talk about this with someone, and James looked so pleased and excited. “Good,” James said. “Good, because they need to get together, they would be so happy and so good together, and Sirius will stop sighing like a lovesick puppy and just snog him instead.” In which Lily considers changing Houses, James blushes a lot, Sirius is his usual dramatic self, Remus mopes, and Peter knew everything all along. [the marauders (especially james and lily) trying to play matchmaker is one of my favorite instances of the classic matchmaking trope.] Road Trips + Bed Sharing: Of Comets and Counter-Examples by Woldy [5k,T] If the past is a foreign country, can travel help to resolve a troubled history? Dumbledore assigns Remus and Sirius a mission to explore three European cities, or perhaps to find each other. [a lovely tale of travel, reunions, comfort, friendship, and self-rediscovery. plus, travel, bed sharing, and friends to lovers??? yeah] Matchmaking (again): In The Middle by Blossomwitch [3k,Not Rated] James is the natural confidant of both Remus and Sirius. When they both swear him to secrecy on the same topic, James is stuck watching his friends pine for each other without being able to say a word to bring them together. A lesser man might shrink from the challenge of finding a way to break his promise without breaking his promise, but not James Potter! [i already did a matchmaking trope fic i know but what can i say other than the trope fucking slaps and so does this fic.]

Galactica, Chapter 46 (Group Fic) - TheDane/Veronica

Last Chapter: Pearl invited Adore to a party
This Chapter: Adore has a very bad week, the design team gets more cronuts, and Raven has a lunch date with her bestie.
***
“I don’t understand…”
It had been a great night. Pearl had picked her up, both of them dressed to kill, Adore’s hair freshly dyed an icy turquoise. They’d had dinner, laughing their asses off while they swapped stories about concert debauchery and their favorite bands, and then went onto the party. It was just hours of dancing and flashing lights and pounding bass, their bodies pressed together, chemistry electric like it’d been when they first got together.
Things were so heated at one point that Pearl dragged Adore off to fuck her against a brick wall, making her shiver and moan, fingers gripping the lapels of Pearl’s motorcycle jacket.
After the party, they’d gone to an all-night diner in DUMBO for pancakes, sharing sticky kisses, leaving most of the food untouched as they giggled happily, party drugs slowly leaving their systems.
And then lastly, they’d wandered over to the bridge, the best spot in the whole city to watch the sunrise.
It was then, snuggled in Pearl’s arms as they watched the sky slowly begin to brighten, the first faint rays of light turning a few clouds pink, when Adore carefully brought up the idea of being monogamous. If not now, she figured, clinging together under a cotton-candy sky, then when.
“This open thing, I just...I feel like it’s making me paranoid, you know?”
What she wasn’t expecting, not after a night like that, was that Pearl would immediately let go of her, shaking her head, saying, “I’m just not ready for that.”
Which brought them to the present moment.
“I don’t understand…” Adore began, eyes welling up with tears. “Didn’t you have fun tonight?”
“Yeah, of course. I always have fun with you,” Pearl said.
“So then why-” Adore gulped as a single tear spilled down her cheek. “Why am I not enough for you?”
“It’s not that! You’re great. You are. There are just things I miss when we’re together. And I don’t want to make you a promise that I can’t keep.”
“Like what? What do you miss?”
“Like…” Pearl faltered. “Like, little lacy panties and kissing with lipgloss. Having a manicured hand in my hair while I eat a girl out. Watching an ass in high heels and smelling floral perfumes. Carrying her tiny purse-”
“So...I’m not femme enough?” Adore asked, head still shaking in confusion.
“You’re the one who asked.” Pearl sighed, pushing away from the bridge. “I like you, and it makes me sound like a douche, but, I dunno Adore. I’m a lesbian. I like girls. Sometimes-” Pearl looked over at her. “Sometimes you seem more like a boy.”
Adore swore she could feel her heart shatter, a wrecked sob leaving her. Growing up, one of her biggest sources of shame was not being enough of a “girl.” She never liked frilly things, she never liked the things her older sisters did, like ballet classes and fashion and shopping. She remembered being a kid, bored silly with the endless conversations about nail polish and push-up bras that she was subjected to.
When she came out, one of the best things was that a lot of those expectations were suddenly removed, lifted from her shoulders. She could make her own rules, and so she did. But sometimes, secretly, she still worried. She still glanced at her reflection when in a group of other girls, still wondered sometimes how she measured up.
Most of the time, she got plenty of validation--her friends praising her constantly, and even her sister’s lighthearted shade was affectionate, never failing to slip in a compliment. So she was able to curb her inner demons, really believe that she was beautiful and cute and lovable, even if she wasn’t the most feminine.
But today, hearing Pearl’s honest opinion...it was like someone confirming her worst fear. Like a boy. As she continued crying, her chest aching, she felt like even more of a monster than she ever had.
“C’mon, don’t cry.” Pearl didn’t touch her, and Adore was so thankful for that, as it would have made everything worse. “You’re a really cool boy, and it’s fun to spend time with you.”
“Just stop talking.”
“Let’s get a cab and head back-”
“You think I wanna ride in a cab with you right now?!” Adore asked angrily, swiping at her eyes, surely smearing her makeup even more. “Fuck you!”
“Adore-”
“Just go!” she exclaimed hoarsely, glaring right into Pearl’s tired eyes, daring her.
After a resigned sigh, Pearl muttered, “Whatever you say,” and turned, walking back towards Brooklyn.
***
Courtney had almost finished getting ready for work, putting the last touches on her makeup and looking for a pair of earrings both plain enough to be acceptable, but that she was certain she hadn’t worn in the last two weeks. She’d just pulled out a pair of small, inoffensive black hoops when her phone started buzzing, sending a wave of fear and nausea through her all at once.
It was barely 6:30, and getting a phone call at this time could only mean that there was some pending disaster for her at work--or worse, something she’d already screwed up. She reached for the phone with her heart in throat, stomach churning, only to see to her surprise that it wasn’t her work phone ringing. Brow furrowed, she picked up her old personal iPhone, wondering what could be wrong.
“Adore? Are you okay?”
“Pearl and I broke up,” came Adore’s shaky voice, hitching on the last word.
“Oh god, I’m so sorry!”
“We had the best night, I thought things were turning around, and then she-”
What came next was almost totally incomprehensible as Adore tried to speak through her sobs.
“Where are you, honey? Do you need me to come and-”
“I’m on the Brooklyn Bridge.”
“You’re what!?” Courtney’s heart nearly stopped, panic rushing through her like a bolt of lightning.
“No, I’m…It’s just cause we were at a party here. Don’t-” Adore managed to chuckle drily through her tears. “Don’t worry.”
“Oh. Okay. Good.”
“I’m just gonna walk across and then like...I dunno. Probably go home and sleep all day. But I thought...maybe we could hang out this week?”
“Of course! Whenever you want, just say the word. Okay?”
“Okay. Thanks. I’m sorry to...I know you’re probably heading to work, I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. You know you can call me anytime. And Dore?”
“Yeah?”
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
***
Pearl was leaning back in her chair, her eyes closed, a constant throb behind her right eye.
Normally, she had nothing against the big glass doors and windows that let her entire team see her at all times, the installment of them her own choice, but right now, Pearl desperately wished she had a private office.
She was feeling absolutely wretched from last night, and if she was being honest, it wasn’t just leftover alcohol and party drugs that had her feeling like shit.
Adore had completely misunderstood, had refused to listen to her when she explained herself, the whole thing a terrible terrible mess.
It wasn’t Pearl’s fault that Adore had agreed to something she apparently wasn’t cool with, this whole situation only happening because Adore didn’t actually know herself.
Pearl crossed her arms, groaning, the lie comforting for a moment, but it was just that, a lie.
Adore had asked for honesty, but it seemed like Pearl had made a mistake indulging it. She didn’t know what to do, the guilty feeling new and unfamiliar.
“Pearl?” Pearl opened her eyes to see Laganja standing at her door, a curious expression on her face. “I need you to-”
“I don’t need to do shit until after you get me a coffee.”
“Okay boss?” Laganja raised an eyebrow. “Way to be a bitch.”
Laganja turned around and walked away, Pearl groaning as she slid even further down her chair, today going from bad to worse to terrible.
***
“Hello! Earth to Chachki.”
“Huh?” Violet looked up, Bob’s voice cutting through her thoughts. It was midmorning, Trixie coming into work with boxes of cronuts, a smile on his face as the designers had flocked around him.
Everyone had gathered at the couches, Violet’s stack of magazines she had already read in the corner, Maxwell asking if he could read them when she was done.
“Are you going to eat that?” Bob pointed at Violet’s plate.
“Oh.” Violet looked down, the pastry untouched. “Umh-” April had been kind enough to bring Violet a plate without being asked, her and Alexis sitting side by side. “What’s Trixie’s deal with these anyway?”
“With the cronuts?” Jovan looked over at her, Maxwell next to him.
“It means there’s a tough week ahead-” Maxwell waved his cronut around. “It’s kind of an apology in advance.”
“Ha,” Violet smiled, that statement so fitting with everything she knew of Trixie, the man downstairs in a meeting with Bendela.
“And the question still stands on whether or not you're eating that,” Bob nodded, his eyes still firmly on Violet’s cronut.
“Ah.” She hadn’t even tasted it, but Violet was not in the mood, Sutan’s question about Aspen still playing around in her head. “No.”
“Dibs then!” Blu grinned, reaching over the coffee table and snatching it from Violet’s plate.
“Hey!” Bob yelled, outrage on his face. “That was mine.”
“We can share it.” Blu smiled, breaking it in two.
“You guys,” Alexis rolled her eyes, taking a sip of her coffee as she flicked to the next page. “Awww, look!” Alexis lit up, turning the magazine around. “Remember when Lupita Nyong’o wore my dress to the Grammys?”
“Gimme!” Maxwell reached out, snatching it from Alexis' hand and Violet leaned over so she could see too, Jovan inches away from her.
Lupita looked stunning in her dark blue gown, the flowy skirt making her look like a goddess, Alexis’ signature draping all over it.
“She looks great,” Violet said, “You should be very proud.”
“Thanks, girl!”
Violet looked closer at the page, grimacing when she saw Katy Perry’s weirdly unflattering, asymmetrical suit.
“Katy Perry, though, what an absolute mess. It looks as if Maxwell and Jovan collabed while on acid.”
The second the words left her mouth, Violet regretted them.
This was the first time she had spoken her mind around her new coworkers, the first time she had let out her most sarcastic and dry thoughts, her heart speeding up.
Jovan and Maxwell looked at each other, and Violet tensed, prepared for the angry response she was sure would be coming. But instead of snapping at her or putting her in her place, both men burst out laughing, the rest of the group quickly joining in.
This was unlike anything Violet had ever experienced in school, her peers not laughing at her, but apparently with her instead, the feeling completely new. No one giving her death stares or looking at her like she was a stain on a carpet.
“Omigod, draaag them!” Bob exclaimed, wiping his eyes.
“I-” Violet didn’t know what to say. As a child, she had kept her mouth shut, never saying anything, even when it got her in trouble. It had gotten better at the academy, her body speaking for her, but her classmates and coworkers had taken her silence as a judgement, her corrections of their work like attacks instead of the advice she had meant it as.
In college, she had just stopped giving her opinion all together, another girl leaving a critique in tears when Violet had shared her honest thoughts.
“I didn’t mean-”
“Just to be clear,” Maxwell smiled, “I refuse to have this color story pinned on me.”
“Oh girl shut up,” Jovan grabbed the magazine. “It’s not the colors that makes this terrible, it’s the fucking cut. Are you blind?”
“Anything but the neckline is fine.”
“Okay, so you are blind?”
“I think all of it looks like shit too.”
“BLU!”
Violet smiled, watching her coworkers argue, for once, feeling like she completely and absolutely belonged with them.
***
Bianca stepped off the elevator into her foyer, nearly tripping over a pair of studded black combat boots telling her that she wasn’t coming home to her usual empty apartment.
“Adore? Hello? Where are you?”
Bianca walked through the living room and dining room to the kitchen, assuming that’s where she’d find her sister, but there was no Adore to be found.
“Adore!”
She started to get concerned when yipping from the dogs guided her into the den, where Adore was curled up on the giant L-shaped sofa, buried under 3 blankets, a half-empty bottle of Jack Daniels sitting on the coffee table.
“Hey.”
“Hi.” Adore looked up, blue eyes red and watery, lip quivering, and Bianca immediately softened at the sight.
“What’s wrong?” Bianca asked, although she had a pretty good idea already.
Adore rubbed her eyes and sniffled before saying, “Please just don’t say ‘I told you so,’ okay?”
“Aww, baby girl…” Bianca rushed to her side, wrapping her up into a hug and rocking her, rubbing her back, letting her cry it out. “I’m so sorry, pussycat.”
“I’m so stupid,” Adore cried into her neck, and Bianca shook her head vigorously.
“You’re not. Not at all. She’s the stupid one. Okay?” Bianca murmured against her temple.
“Do you have any ice cream?”
Bianca smiled slightly, brushing away a few of Adore’s tears with her thumbs. “I’ll have some delivered. Cookie dough or fudge brownie?”
“Both.”
“Coming right up.” Bianca pressed a kiss to Adore’s forehead and reached for her phone. The fact that things between Adore and Pearl had ended like this was no surprise, not to anyone with half a brain, but she still felt badly for her sister, would still do anything possible to help her feel better.

“Juju!” Raven stood up, smiling brightly as she watched her best friend make her way through the restaurant. “It’s so good to see you!” Raven pulled her in for a hug, breathing in the scent of the coconut oil Juju always used.
“Hi gorgeous!” Juju said, hugging her back, and Raven grinned, pulling back to take her in.
Juju looked amazing, her brown hair styled in her signature curls, her blouse of the day a satin lilac with a bow. And of course that bump, growing every day.
“Mama, how did you grow this much in two weeks?” Raven put a hand on Juju’s belly, a tight pencil skirt holding it in. She couldn’t feel the baby yet, but that didn’t matter.
“My best guess is curly fries.” Juju laughed. “I’ve been hitting up Arby’s on my way home from the salon every day, because I…” Juju framed her face with triumphant jazz hands, “am garbage!”
“That’s why we love you,” Raven giggled, pressing a kiss to her friend’s cheek before getting back into their seats.
Raven and Juju had been friends for years. Raven had liked Juju from the moment they met,  Sutan putting her in Juju’s salon chair the second he had signed her for Elite, but they hadn’t officially clicked until she had started dating Raja.
Raven had never really had a best friend growing up, and she was so happy that she had Juju, even though they didn’t see each other as much as they both wanted to. Raven often visited the Sanderson household, spending her evenings there sometimes when Raja worked late--but with the twins, Detox and Kelly around, they rarely had time just the two of them. So as soon as the waiter came by and took their orders, she got down to business.
“Tell me all about your trip!” Raven said. “How’s the new location doing?”
“Oh man. I mean it’s going well so far, but could I have chosen a worse time to open up a new salon? I’m so busy already, and now this new kid. I’m a little worried.”
Juju’s New York salon was such a success that over the years she’d opened up several more locations: Los Angeles, Miami, and Chicago. And now, her latest one in Atlanta, opened just a month before she’d found out that she was pregnant again.
“If anyone can do it, you can!” Raven told her with an encouraging squeeze, remembering how hectic things had been after the twins were born. “Look at it this way...at least it’s only one baby this time.”
“Ha! That’s true. Anyway, so far so good. Plus it’s around the corner from the best restaurant I have ever been, in my life”
“In Atlanta?” Raven asked, stirring her iced tea, one eyebrow raised.
“Yes, don’t be such a snob!” Juju laughed.
“Whatever you say,” Raven replied.
“Rave, seriously. I mean the food was good, but the desserts?”
Raven perked up, eyes getting bigger and bigger as Juju proceeded to describe a decadent chocolate mousse cheesecake and coconut bread pudding soufflé.
“Stop, omigod!” she finally interrupted, picking up her napkin to fan herself with it. “This is too public. It’s like watching porn on the subway.”
Jujubee laughed, clapping her hands. “Sounds fun! I’m gonna try that. Also...” Juju gestured to the dessert tray rolling by, piled high with confections.
“Ugh, I would push my grandmother in front of a bus for one of those!” Raven groaned, and Juju laughed again.
“So have one! You can’t still be on your runway diet, right?”
“No, I am. “ Raven sighed. “Galactica is doing that showroom thing for the holiday collection next week, and in December I have two swimwear shoots.”
Just thinking about it, Raven groaned. She was excited about the Galactica booking, showroom shows technically way below her level of modeling, but Raven took any excuse she could to work with Raja, spending time with her finacée more than enough reason to put up with the tedious task of playing mannequin for the day.
What was starting not to feel worth it, was the swimwear shoots.
Raven wanted the money, and she was happy she had work, but she couldn’t wait for Thanksgiving, Sutan giving her a mere 6 hours of carte blanche to eat whatever she wanted.
“I’ve been in the gym two hours every day, eating like, grass and leaves.”
Raja had been sweet about it, encouraging her and helping her, but her fiancée just didn’t understand, getting in shape and most importantly keeping the same shape never an issue for Raja, Raja’s measurements largely the same in her 40s as they had been in her 20s. Raven was just happy that Raja seemed to love her body no matter what, the grind of being perfect getting harder and harder every year.
“It’s been horrendous.”
“Aww, I’m sorry boo.” Juju reached over the table, squeezing Raven’s forearm. “If it helps, Kelly’s getting into cooking and yesterday she made us the most god-awful pancakes I’ve ever had. I didn’t want to discourage her so I had five.”
“How is you eating five pancakes supposed to make me feel better?!” Raven shrieked.
“They were terrible!”
“They were pancakes! Do you know how long it’s been since I had a pancake, you fuckin’ bitch?!”
Juju opened her mouth to reply, but instead, caught sight of the absolutely enraged expression on her friend’s face and burst out laughing. Soon both of them were laughing, clutching their sides, completely unconcerned with the number of Upper East Side ladies giving them the stink-eye.

COURTNEY: Hey honey, how’s it going?
ADORE: Well. Bianca is keeping the liquor cabinet well-stocked, so...counting my blessings.
COURTNEY: I really want to see you.
ADORE: Me too. Ditch work tomorrow and come hang out with me.
COURTNEY: Ha! I wish.
ADORE: Maybe Friday? Sleepover at my place?
COURTNEY: It’s a date. <3

“If you’d please direct your attention to the beading samples in front of you, I’ve made horizontal and vertical variations, the horizontal the pattern I’ve integrated on the bodice-”
As an assistant, Violet had been used to Fame’s steely blue eyes every single day, a squint, a lifted brow, the twist of a mouth more than enough to tell Violet everything she needed to know.
Now, it felt like Fame was a complete stranger, her boss sitting with Raja at her side, both of them completely impassive, Fame’s face not giving anything away.
“And it’s my clear conviction that that will be the best choice, the lines creating a more pleasant visual.”
Violet knew it wasn’t her outfit, her hair styled with a golden clip exactly like Fame liked it, her nails the almond shape and pale pink that was never a problem, her shoes the regulated height so Violet wouldn’t tower over Fame if they had to walk anywhere together.
“For the sleeves, I hope you’ll considered the flared options,” Violet twisted her mannequin, showing off the right sleeve that she had carefully attached with loose stitches to her dress, “But I’ve also done a more traditional slender-”
“Violet.”
Violet froze, looking over at Fame, her boss wearing a white sweater and white high waisted pants, the row of pearls on her Jimmy Choo’s matching her bracelet and earrings.
“That’s all.”
“Oh,” Violet felt her stomach clench, a flash of disappointment washing over her. “Yes Miss.”
Violet grabbed her mannequin, knowing defeat when it was staring her in the face. She had no idea what she had done wrong, Fame cutting her off mid sentence, all the other designers getting feedback or questions.
Violet watched as Alexis rolled up, the other woman instantly filling out the room with her personality, even making Raja laugh as she showed off the several garments she was working on.
Violet swallowed her disappointment, breathing through her nose as she left the meeting room, her nails digging into her palm.
Years of ballet had taught her that sometimes, even your best wasn’t enough, but without feedback, Violet had no idea what to change or how to fix the situation.
She sat at her desk, tailoring thankfully sending up a package with options for details on her prêt-à-porter so she could distract herself.
Violet was going over the button options for the clothes that would end up mass produced for the stores, when she felt Trixie’s hand on her shoulder.
“Good work today Violet.” Trixie smiled, sitting down on the edge of her desk. He was wearing a blue fuzzy sweater with a teddy bear on it, the creation so clearly made by Katya, a clipboard in his hand.
“Thanks.” Violet bit her cheek, doing her best not to let the disappointment show on her face.
“I know it’s tough right now, not knowing where you stand, but remember. You’re most likely already in the collection somewhere.” Trixie’s voice was soft, which actually only made Violet feel worse, his compassion not at all what she needed. “While we’re waiting for placements and final feedback, I need you to focus on Holiday.”
“Yes.” Violet nodded. She only had one piece in the holiday collection, but she still had to do her best.
“Everything is happening Monday, and I hope you’re ready for it. I expect you to be there bright and early, getting to know how these things work will be crucial for your further career here.”
“Yes sir-” Violet cut herself off, the sir feeling all wrong. “You got it coach.”

Chapter One.
Fake Fiancé/Husband Wanted!
Yes, I know the request looks weird, but I can explain. I work a high demanding job so I can't have custody of my child unless I marry someone with regular hours and a regular nanny on call. I have the nanny, but she is a uni student and can't be here at odd hours. After gaining custody and getting a job with normal hours I am willing to pay you or we can talk about divorce settlements. Preferably someone with a stable job and a liking towards kids. If you have a child, they are welcome to live here too obviously and I will treat them like my own for the foreseeable future. Serious inquiries only, please contact me via email I have made specifically for this.
Thank you.   Louis didn't know why he was on craigslist at three in the morning after drinking himself to death's door knowing Freddie was safe with Zayn for the night. He knew that when he was drunk, he tended to do stupid things and think stupid things. He had been on this post for almost an hour staring at it knowing damn well how stupid and dangerous replying was. That didn't stop him from clicking on the email and typing out a reply.
To Stranger,
My name is Louis Tomlinson I am a single father of a four-year-old boy. I work as a dramatic arts teacher at Abraham Moss Community. Not the best paying job, but nowhere in your post did you have a minimum annual income requirement. Despite the horrible pay I do love my job and I work at this school for free childcare at the nursery across the street my son goes to. I would like to know a bit more information about you wanting custody before I agree to such a thing. You hear so many stories about fathers taking kids to be spiteful, so I want to be sure that is not the reason.
Louis
****   It was two days later when Louis got a reply from the mysterious guy. He waited until his lunch break before he read it.
Louis,
You are the first normal person who has shown interest in anything that wasn't money related. For that reason, I really hope we hit it off. I love my daughter so much; she is my absolute world and I video call her every day. It's not me that is the bad parent and I say this as nicely as I can, but her mother is a very absent and selfish parent, and it shows. It's funny you work where you do, my daughter is in Year 1 there.
I gave her mother the money for private school, but she spent it on a new wardrobe for herself and didn't even spent a dime on out daughter. So, she goes to Abraham. I have receipts and check copies, and everything is to prove that I am the 'fit' parent. I have tried to avoid court, but I haven't been able to have my daughter for more than a few hours in over a year. Now her mother is talking about movie to America if her boyfriend gets the promotion at the end of the twelve-month training which just began a month ago. I have a hearing in a few weeks for visiting rights so hopefully if you are still willing after hearing how much drama this will involve, we can talk about everything in person before then.
Your son Freddie, what's his custody like? He is welcome here anytime and if he lives with you full time that's amazing. Obviously, kids make this a bit more delicate, but all the more reason to see if we can try to be something more along the way? We'll discuss this more another time of course, but reply as soon as you are able to and maybe we can get coffee?
 Your (maybe) future husband.
Louis smiled softly reading about how much the guy loved his daughter. He seemed to want the best for her, and her mother seemed to just want money. He heard about those people and he could honestly say he couldn't believe it. He couldn't believe people put themselves first over their own child. Louis had three-year-old winter boots with the soles so worn out that the snow seeped into his socks, but his son always needed new boots every winter and he'd be damned if his son were in pain over too tight shoes because Louis bought a pair of boots for himself. Louis pressed the reply button and wrote a quick response.
My future husband,
She sounds like the devil. I'd be happy to help you if you don't/haven't found anyone better. I have the same lunch hour every Monday through Friday from 11-12 and there's a small coffee shop around the corner I can make it to for the hour. Then my best my mate has Freddie a weekend a month and then me mum has Freddie for another weekend. Usually it goes me mum, myself, best mate, and myself again. So, to make this believable we have two weekends to have "been together". Freddie is mine solely, I'm a carrier so I had him, and his other father ran out a few months after he was born. Ran off with a younger boy without a child and without a scar on his stomach. Let me know when you're available for that coffee.
Louis
***********   Harry emailed only three people Louis, Matthew, and Brian. Matthew and Brian didn't have kids, but they said they liked them. Matthew kept asking about his monthly income which he kept avoiding and Brian asked how big he was and if sex was involved. Harry wouldn't say no to sex of course, but to ask someone's size. He ended up blocking him when he got a dick pic. Matthew then asked how much the wedding would total up to and if they were wearing designer suits, so he ended up blocking him as well. Louis was interested in his reason of doing this and he had a child so knew how real this had to be for kids. He knew what it meant to be a full-time parent and put the kid first. So, he was so far the best candidate and he never even asked about his job or finances. So, after checking his schedule he emailed him and told him he'd be able to meet Thursday during his lunch at the café he knew Louis was talking about.   He got off a rare 38-hour shift Thursday at ten, so it gave him time to make it to the school for a quick minute to see Maddison. He walked into the building still in his pink scrubs and lab coat on as well, but that was because he hadn't taken it off so use to having it on all the time. He headed up to the front desk smiling at Amy.   "Hey Amy, is Maddison available for just a minute? I know she's in art right now."   "She is, however, she's over at the other side in Mr. Tomlinson's room. He's her favorite teacher and she goes there every art class and sometimes when her mother is late for pickup, he stays with her. I can take you to his room."   "Louis Tomlinson?" Harry questioned not believing it for a second   "Well, she calls him Mister Tommy."   "Oh that's- no kidding yeah she told me about him. He gives her candy whenever she gets a good score on her writing or reading." Harry said grinning   "That's him. He seems to be everyone's favorite. I'll take you to him-"   "No, it's okay. Can you just tell her I stopped by? I don't want to disturb her."   "Are you sure?"   "Yeah, it's fine. Thank you, Amy." Harry left the building and headed to his Murano. He waited in the parking lot for a little while as he went through their emails over the past few days. Harry had told Louis his name and that he worked as a doctor. He wanted to get into neonatal care, he already had the training and everything he needed there just hadn't been an opening yet, but the hospital was expanding their Neonatal Ward and Harry had already talked to his higher ups about working there. When he finally got to the cafe, he was only a few minutes later because he got lost in his own head in the parking lot. Harry got out of the car and headed inside up to the front desk. Louis' Gmail account had a picture of himself so when he looked around the cafe it was easy to spot Louis sitting at a booth as he looked down at his phone. Harry grabbed his cup and headed to the booth nervously then set the mug down and slid into the other side. Louis looked up from his phone and smiled.   "Hey." Harry said   "Hi. Sorry I was texting one of the nursery staffs about Freddie. He had a rough night last night so he's having a bad day today."   "Is he okay? Bad dream or something?" Harry asked concerned   "He has a problem of staying asleep, we live in the apartment complex and our upstairs neighbors stay up all night yelling at their game system."   "Melatonin. My mom swears by it when I was a toddler. I had to give mine some when she refused a nap even though she was exhausted a few years ago." Harry told him   "They have melatonin for kids?"   "Yeah, definitely get some for him if he wakes up at odd hours of the night. Also, you know my daughter."   "I do? I know a few Year 1, but not a lot. Who is she?" Louis asked   "Maddison Styles." Louis eyes widen and he grinned   "Yeah, I was just with her. She comes to see me every Tuesday and Thursday during her art class. She has a hard time concentrating in the room, so I took her to mine. I have a free period anyway, so I don't mind."   "Yeah, she's too much like me. Her and I have a sensory overwhelm with too much noise. We also have dyslexia, terrible dyslexia, mine is controlled most of the time now, but she's not doing so good with her reading or writing because she doesn't get at home help."   "Yeah, I figured that out when she wrote her name as Mabbison or Wappison more than a few times." Louis said grinning making Harry laugh nodding   "I had to get five different papers for her birth signing because I was so emotional when I was spelling her name, I messed it up. My mom had to take me to a quiet room and call me down before letting me write again. If was horrible. My patients look at my writing and I can see their confusion build as they try to decipher my spelling." Louis laughed covering his mouth with his hand, "anyway um I know this was meant to be a casual meeting to make sure we're not pedophiles or murders or whatever, but I did bring some copies of things just in case you want to see it. I'm not trying to make her out to be a horrible person, these are just some of the things I had copies of at home."   "Oh, now that I know you're Madison's dad and having met her mother I agree with you. She's a horrible person. I hate her. Today for example Maddison came to school in a dress without a jacket and without leggings. She was freezing, the school wasn't letting kids inside yet, so I let her in the side door to my classroom and gave her some of Freddie's sweatpants I keep in my car. Poor thing is in 3t sweatpants that stop at her shins."   "I have black leggings and a jacket in my car if you can give them to her. I always keep a small totes of season clothes for her just in case anything happens. Usually, the school calls me and tells me if something like this happens and usually, I'm at work so I have to ask someone to bring them for her. A few days ago, her teacher called me and told me Maddie came to school in dirty clothes and when I got there Maddie was in the nurses’ station crying. Apparently, her mother hadn't washed her clothes and that was all she had there. I called her as soon as I left the school and told her is, she didn't wash my daughter's clothes by the end of the day I'd report her to child services. Needless to say, that hasn't happened again, but September hasn’t even ended yet so who knows."   "Yeah, I can take them to her. I don't see how a parent can do such a thing. I always wash Freddie's clothes first then I do his bed sheets then I do the towel then I do my clothes and bedsheets last."   "Yeah, I wash her stuff at my house every two weeks so if I get her out of the blue, she has clean clothes and sheets."   "How long has it been since you last had her?"   "Her mother dropped her off at the hospital when I was working a few weeks ago but she came back right as my shift ended. Maddie was so upset because she thought she'd be able to stay the night. The last time I've had her over night was 16 months ago and I had for her two days because her mother and boyfriend were at a resort for the weekend."   "I couldn't imagine that." Louis said shaking his head, "Freddie is my world. I couldn't be separated from him. I barely manage a weekend away."   "So, does he call you Papa? I know that's the more traditional term for carriers."   "Yeah, most of the time. If he's upset, he'll call me mommy or mama. I am one of the lucky ones able to nurse, at least with Freddie. I heard some can't for their second child or third child. I think with every child the chances get lower. He called me mommy or mama until he was two and a half, so I think it brings him comfort. I don't mind either way."   "That's sweet. I wish I were a carrier. My sister and I had to play mommies and aunties instead of mommies and daddies because I always wanted to be the mommy. I'd shove the baby doll under my shirt and go through labor with my stepdad and everything. My mom held the seat rag to my forehead. We went all out, I demanded it. We were all convinced I was a carrier, then when I was seventeen, I  got tested and I wasn't. I was devastated. I cried so much; I remember convincing myself I was straight for years after that. That's how I got Maddison." Louis laughed unable to help himself   "You're joking."   "No. Not one bit. I thought if I wasn't a carrier there was no point in being gay, so I went straight."   "I was the complete opposite." Louis said, "I was always the daddy, I'm the oldest of five sisters and my mom finally gave me a brother a year ago. Two sets of twins. I demanded to be daddy because I didn't think I was a carrier. I thought I was straight until probably sixteen."   "Really?"   "Yeah, I just never really thought about it, I guess. My first boyfriend was when I was seventeen and we dated until he left after Freddie. I had him when I was twenty on March twenty-first and graduated early. He's turning five next year."   "You had him in school and finished your studies early?"   "Yeah, it was really hard, the first year was terrible, but I got my degree and took the first job I was offered that had the best benefits for us as a family."   "That's amazing. We had Maddison when I was in my foundation programme. I was twenty-four. She was born on May twentieth, so she'll be six two months after Freddie turns five. I started working at twenty-six. Hannah and I split then because I had to work so many night shifts, so she started cheating while I slept during the day. She took Maddie and left. We've been fighting since."   "So, you're thirty?"   "Almost thirty. Still in my twenties for four more months."   "Can't relate. Still got a few years." Louis said smirking making Harry throw a walled-up napkin at him. "Well, you look good for thirty." Louis teased   "Twenty-nine."   "Same thing." Louis said grinning as he watched Harry shake his head grinning as he stared off to the side before their eyes met. Louis knew that even if nothing came from this marriage besides Harry gaining his daughter, it wouldn't be a horrible marriage of convenience. Which made him feel better and he could tell Harry was relieved as well, both glad this wouldn't be a disaster.
“I’m sure you have a lot of questions for me.” Harry said, “Especially considering how this came to be. I mean I know you see Maddie with her mom, so you understand some of it, but if you want to ask more feel free to do so.”
“Besides the obvious reasons why go to craigslist?” Louis asked
“Last resort? It had to be someone my friends didn’t know so I couldn’t ask anyone at the hospital. I tried dating, but it never went past a few texts. Having a daughter that I want full custody of sort of makes men run away. They don’t understand why I can’t just get a weekend a month and be happy with it. I’ve tried explaining the situation, but they don’t get it. Then it’s also my odd hours of my schedule. I’m a doctor at the hospital so I’m off and on and on call a lot. Makes it hard. My schedule is pretty tame, but it’s a pain to get use to and stuff like that.” Harry explained
“Yeah, I get that. With Freddie…he’s my priority and obviously before I fully agree to anything, he has to like you too, but that can wait a bit. Make sure you’re not a weird murderer or something.”
“Fair enough.” Harry said chuckling, “So I guess um…why did you offer to help? I know with a son this makes it more delicate, I mean obviously I’m hoping once we settle in, we can try for something real, but why offer?”
“Any parent who wants to see their child should be able to. I would help anyone who was sincere enough. If you were one of those fathers trying to take their child away from their mother out of pettiness then I’d walk out of this building, but I’ve met Hannah. I’ve seen, I’ve seen the clothes she drops her daughter off in while she’s wearing the newest Gucci purse or whatever. I’ve been talking to school about it since the first day, but there isn’t much we can do. We can record it and file it away incase you ever need it for court, but unless she comes to school with bruises or starving, we don’t have grounds to call child services.”
 “So, Freddie’s other father?”
“If he ever contacted me, I’d let him see Freddie. I’d talk to Freddie about it first, make him go to the first meeting and if he didn’t want to see him after that? I don’t know. Freddie has asked and I told him the truth, that his other father left a few weeks after he was born. So, it’d be Freddie’s chose after the first meeting and anyone I see would obviously at least respect that. They don’t have to like it or agree with it.”
“I think people can change if the right person comes along. I hope for Freddie’s sake he contacts you a better man than when he left, but I also hope that if he hasn’t changed that he doesn’t drag Freddie into daddy issues.” Louis cracked a smile and nodded
 “Me too. They’re not fun.”
“No not really. My biological dad left leaving my mom to feed two kids on one minimum wage paycheck. My stepdad came along and changed our lives basically.”
“My biological father left when I was born. My stepdad came along and gave me his last name so he’s my dad. Then he and my mom split, and mom is married to Dan now. She just had twin girl and boy two years ago in February.”
“Awe really? That’s sweet. I’m the youngest out of two kids. I have an older sister.”
“I’m the oldest of seven kids. Goes me, my sisters Lottie, Fizzy, Phoebe and Daisy are twins then Doris and Ernest are twins and my baby sister and my only baby brother.”
 “That’s a lot of sisters.”
“Yeah, I’ve had my fair share of handling little girls. I was six when Lottie came around, so I’ve been through it all.”
“Well then I won’t stop Maddie from painting your nails a pretty pink color when I can’t be her victim in her nail salon. If she’s still into that stuff.” The last part was said sadly as he looked away
“She is. If she’s done with her art assignment early, then I let her color my nails with markers. It washes off by lunch, but she doesn’t need to know that. She’s great. She is one of my favorite students in that school, whenever we see each other in the halls she absolutely has to shout hi Mr. Tommy each time. My students probably think she’s my niece or something. They call me Mr. T all the time and try to encourage her to do the same however I think she’s too shy to.” Harry was grinning as he played with his napkin listening to him
“She’s very social. Always has been. There probably isn’t a stranger in the world she wouldn’t talk to. It’s a bad and good thing. I’ve tried to explain it to her, stranger danger and everything and she understands it, but I don’t think she realizes even a little hi can be dangerous in this world these days. Her mother scares me to death, I’ve seen Maddie run right upfront of cars sometimes and I swear my heart stops.”
“Yeah, I’ve seen her do it too and it’s always the arrival or departure teacher stopping her from getting hit. Hannah will walk her to the crossing way but not to the actual sidewalk so it’s not the easiest thing to watch when I’m on duty. We can’t leave our posts except for emergencies so I have to navigate kids and cars and then watch her and make sure she’s safe. It’s ridiculous sometimes.”
“Well thank you for doing what you can.”
“It’s not much, but of course. I’d do it for any kid. Just thinking about Freddie in the same situation I would probably do the same thing you are. So, for now I’ll help, Freddie is what will be the deciding factor.”
“We’ll talk more and figure it out?”
“Yeah of course. I should go though I need to get back early today. I forgot today is Pop quiz day, my kids are going to hate me.”
“Don’t worry about it. Thank you, Louis.” Harry and Louis stood up and walked out together, “My number is in the file I gave you so feel free to text me instead of emailing me if you want to.”
“Alright. Thanks. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Bye.” Harry and Louis were luckily enough to have parked on opposite ends of the car park, so they didn’t have to awkwardly walk beside each other to go to their respected cars. Harry grinned as he looked at the picture of Maddie, he stole off her mother’s Facebook. It was on her fifth birthday party; one he hadn’t been invited to or hadn’t even been told about. She was dressed in a flowy baby blue dress and her hair curled and she was half smiling as she sat on a chair surrounded by a few presents. He touched the picture that was hanging about his rear-view mirror before he sighed sadly and let it fall from his fingers before he started his Murano and headed out of the car park.

A World Full of Bullies, and the Four Kids Who Never Stop Fighting Them
This is a story about my four children and the small town they live in, a story about bullies and the people who stand up to them. Let me start by introducing the four of them. We’ll refer to them as the Sibling Mafia (this will be important later.) Each of them is as unique as the different parts of a harmony. They grew up closer than close. Best friends, siblings, confidants. They have their moments of disagreement, sibling rivalry, chaos. But there doesn’t go a day without them seeking out one another’s opinions and comfort. Theirs is a bond that can’t be replicated, or completely understood. The 17 year old, we’ll call her ‘Red,’ is the only girl in the bunch. She’s an artistic bisexual disaster (her words, not mine,) she’s riddled with equal parts anxiety and hope, and she holds her own like you wouldn’t believe (she’s surrounded by guys in her work, and out does them at every turn.) She’s five-foot-zero inches of kickass and love. And there isn’t a single person who can hold her back when she wants something. She’s had a rough several years, found herself beaten down to her most fractured level. But she fought back with every ounce of strength available to her and clawed her way back to the surface. She’s thriving. She’s scared. She’s dreaming of her future. (Her brothers have so often looked up to her, I think Red often feels like she’s surrounded by puppy dogs who would willingly battle-rush the world if it ever failed her.)  The 18 year old boy, we’ll call him ‘Blue,’ has high functioning autism and social communications disorder. The world is full of lines he’s steadily trying to figure out how to cross without changing the flow he relies on. From working in the adult world, to trying to hold on to the childhood he isn’t quite ready to let go of, Blue still manages to find the space and time to be the big brother he’s always been. It’s the most important thing to him. More important than his love for just about anything else. That has always been his choice. There isn’t a single one of his siblings that he doesn’t love ferociously. And though his emotions are sometimes tumultuous, he always finds a way to make what he really feels known to those closest to him.
The 14 year old, we’ll call him ‘Purple,’ is a trans (female to male), bisexual, magnetic ray of absolute fricken sunshine. It’s impossible not to want to know more about him, to laugh with him, to share in his infectious well of joy. There isn’t a mean bone in his body, not a single inch of hatred in his DNA. From the moment he was born, he had a smile on his face. The world was his to make happy. And even though these last few years have been one hell of a confusing ride for him, he’s never stopped looking at the world around him like it’s something he wants to change for the better. The  almost-11 year old, we’ll call him ‘Green,’ is a pint sized sarcastic ball of genius who doesn’t see just how important he is to the people around him. His comedy is endless, a shield to protect himself and others from the nastier things life tries to throw. He’s smarter than the average 11 year old, but refuses to jump ahead a grade or two because he ‘just wants to enjoy school.’ And though he likes to pretend that he can handle everything that comes his way, there are times when it’s easy to see how young he truly is. It’s those moments that his siblings are his anchor to an uncertain universe, the chains that keep his gravity from failing him. And they are the epitome of his best friends, his comfort, his home. Red, Blue, Purple and Green have a lot in common. From Red and Purple loving art and music, to Green and Blue loving video games, to all four loving DnD night. They love to adventure together, to share inside jokes, to create beautiful mayhem on a daily basis. They love to learn together, to forget to do their chores together, to ask the world to ‘listen, dammit’ -together.  They also have trauma in common. Losses of those they loved, pains they’ve all had to feel, things a parent can’t protect them from... And there is so goddamn much I wish I could have protected them from. When Blue was in middle school, there was a boy, we’ll call him ‘Misunderstood.’ To him, Blue’s autism made him a prime target in the bullying arena. Like some other kids, Misunderstood would say mean things, call Blue names, make him momentarily feel like he would never fit into the world he so desperately wanted to be a part of. But what Misunderstood didn’t know was that Blue had a better world around him already, one that would come to save him when it counted most.  One day in gym class, Blue was playing basketball with his friends. He tossed the basketball, and it didn’t quite go where Blue was expecting. It sailed at Misunderstood and hit him in the head. It didn’t matter to Misunderstood that it was an accident. All that mattered was this could be a perfect excuse for retaliation. He closed the distance on Blue and punched him in the head. He knocked him out. But in that same moment, Blue’s friends and sister ran to the rescue. They rallied around him, chased Misunderstood away. Protected their friend and brother, because they knew that was exactly what Blue would have done for them. Because Blue is the sort of person to give a stranger the shirt off his back if they really needed it. Something of which Misunderstood couldn’t see. Imagine my terror when I got a phone call from the police. It was a sobering sight to see police cars and an ambulance when I squealed into the school parking lot. There is no way to explain the feelings of helplessness and fury I was inundated with. You know, logically, that your children will break bones and get stitches and have broken hearts and nightmares and a myriad of other pains that are simply a part of life. And you also know, unfortunately, that bullies exist. You never think that anything like this can happen, until it does, however. That’s not naivete. It’s not denial. It’s the hope that the world might not just be as awful as you think it is. Knowing that world proved that hope wrong, even for a moment, makes you want to wrap your children up in your arms and never let go. But that’s not how life works. There isn’t an excuse for what Misunderstood did. But there are things to understand. I can raise my children to be good, caring, kind people. But I have no say in what happens in other children’s lives. Was Misunderstood being cared for? Did he have parents who gave a shit about him? Or was he neglected? Was he lacking the resources to explain and feel his emotions properly? Was his life hell, and he just needed someone to see? I asked myself those things, trying to understand. I even asked the other adults in charge of the situation. But because Misunderstood was a minor, I had no legal right to know. It turned out, in the end, that Misunderstood was expelled. His parents moved him to a different school district. And Blue was left with the question he always seemed to ask when another child chose him to target: ‘Why me, Mom?’
There is no why. Because, like I said, nothing excuses what happened. What I wanted him to focus on was what happened inside the event. And what happened was loyalty, love, friendship and the coming together of individuals to stand up to a bully. Now, at 18 years old and nearly six feet, Blue still has those friends. And he has the lesson they taught him, not the one that Misunderstood wanted to teach. And he doesn’t ask ‘Why me, Mom?’ anymore. He asks, ‘Why not me?’ as he now steps in when someone needs protection. Most recently, Purple, my 14 year old, has had to face bullying of his own. Purple didn’t come out till a year and a half ago, and the daily progress to being the person he wants to be has been beautiful and brilliant. But there is another boy, who we’ll call ‘Unwarranted,’ who has pulled out all the stops to make Purple feel panic, anxiety, terror.  Back when covid was nearly past its first upsweep and all the schools were still closed down, Purple was desperately missing his friends. It was agreed, after a fair deal of hashing out the precautions, that he could see one of his best friends at the park. Purple hadn’t come out yet at that point, still struggling with what it would mean for all the relationships in his life. But the idea of seeing someone who he literally grew up with after being so long apart was too good for him to pass up. They met at the local park, a couple of other friends catching up with them there, and they hung out.  It was supposed to be an innocent, happy time for a kid who only ever tried to make people happy. It ended in police involvement and kids being physically hurt. Unwarranted had shown up with two much older kids. But the part he played was entirely his choice as all three terrorized the younger kids, with words and with physical threats that ended with large rocks being thrown. One child was hit in the head. My child was hit in the side. Both of them ended up hurt. All while they were running to Purple’s friend’s house for safety.  Unfortunately, there was so little we could do. It didn’t happen on school grounds, so the schools couldn’t be involved. The police couldn’t tell me much more other than they knew who the three bullies were, having been in trouble with the police before. And I couldn’t know anything else because they were minors. To protect my child, I couldn’t let him go to the park alone anymore. I drove him everywhere. I tried to help him forget. And over time, he did. Until the beginning of this school year. Purple started his Freshman year looking for new beginnings. He’d already firmly cemented himself in coming out, was totally authentic in who he is and who he wants to be. His friends are still his friends, completely accepting and loving him. And he tackled his first week of school with intensity and excitement.  In the back of my mind, however, I had never forgotten what happened at the park. The mother in me held on to it, because I couldn’t take the risk that something worse could happen. I hadn’t been able to protect or avoid what happened to Blue. But maybe I could protect Purple. I got in contact with the new principal at the high school, explaining the situation and that I did not want Purple to be in any classes with Unwarranted. He vehemently agreed. Purple doesn’t have a single class with him. It’s worked out well. Or it did, until they passed each other in the hall. In that brief moment, when classes were changing and kids were hurrying through the halls, Unwarranted took it upon himself to pick right up where he left off. Except now, Unwarranted isn’t the same size as Purple. He’s over six feet, athletic, and knows how intimidated Purple already was by him. The result was Purple incoherent with fear. There’s a reason I have referred to all four kids together as the Sibling Mafia. Because if you hurt one of them, you hurt all of them. And there’s hell to pay. Red and Blue, who are both Seniors at the high school, heard about the incident almost immediately. (It’s a small town, so small school, and word travels fast.) They didn’t go to their next classes. They took Purple to the office instead, and demanded something be done. They wanted answers and a resolution, and they wanted it fast. I received a phone call about it all from the guidance counselor who was just gushing over the bond they all shared, and the way they’d rallied around Purple. But it wasn’t just Red and Blue who rallied. It was their friends.  You see, if you’re friends with one of them, you’re friends with all of them. And in a place like this, it grows exponentially. So many people love Purple, and Red, and Blue, and Green. And it shows. The principal and counselor and school resource officer worked on a plan to keep Purple and Unwarranted from ever crossing paths. It was good. It was a start. Unfortunately, it did nothing for when the kids were walking home from school. Because Unwarranted decided to make prodding and inappropriate comments while walking behind him. Only, this time Blue and his best friend, we’ll call him ‘Orange,’ and two of Purple’s friends were there to do something about it. Because Unwarranted had a lot to say when he knew Purple was too scared to retaliate. (Red was with a friend, but was furious when she found out.) But being faced with the reality of a whole group who were more than capable of protecting Purple made him back right off. No fists were thrown. No one got hurt. And everyone made it home safely.
And Purple came to me, despite his fear and wariness, to ask... ‘What if something is wrong with Unwarranted? What if something happened at home to make him act this way? Maybe we can help...’ My response was to breathe. To stare at this kid of mine, because the compassion in those words made my heart hurt. Here was this boy who was obviously being terrorized by someone else, and all he could think about was making sure that bully was okay? I told Purple, ‘You have no idea how amazing your heart is.’ I told him, ‘I don’t know what might be going on with Unwarranted. And it’s wonderful of you to want to help. But you also have the right to be safe, whether you’re in school or walking on the streets. You have the right to have a happy learning experience without fear of being cornered in the hallways. For now, as much as I know you want to figure it all out, my priority is making sure that you are safe.’ He nodded, hugged me, and went about his day.
I read somewhere once that bullies are predators. They will go after what appears to them to be the weakest prey. Trying to stop a bully by teaching a child to stand up to them is like teaching the weakest gazelle to be stronger. The predator will not stop going after the weakest prey, it will only stop going after that target. But what if that target was never weak to begin with? Purple may not have the physical attributes of a football player or a wrestler. But he’s got something even better. He’s a wolf with a pack who would be lesser without his knowledge and love. And there’s nothing that pack wouldn’t do to protect him, just like there’s nothing he wouldn’t do to make their lives better. The Sibling Mafia extends beyond blood, it seems.  Now you might be wondering, where’s the almost-11 year old Green in all this? Green came into the first three’s lives when Purple was a little under three years old. At that point, they were already bonded and closer than I could have ever imagined. But the second Green’s little wiggly self came home, the change was immediate and overwhelming. Not in a bad way, not even remotely. You see, that bond transformed. It grew, it solidified, it settled into a whole new identity. It somehow made them far more whole than any of us realized they could be. Because all three older kids had lessons to teach and love to give, and with Green they could do all that together. Without any encouragement from me, because kids don’t need to be raising other kids, Green grew up being the literal center of their world. And they all loved each other more because of it. Green is just a little guy. He’s small and skinny and scrappy, full of wit and genius that often leaves the rest of us wondering where he got it from. He looks at his siblings like he wants to give them the universe. And he goes through life like he might just give it a reason to wise up to the possibility of goodness if it tries hard enough. Nothing holds him down for long. Events, losses, physical injury. He bounces back so fast that the rest of us get whiplash.
But what happens when an event causes loss and physical injury at the same time?
Just this past week, the kids were walking home from school. Red has Senior release, which allows her to get out of school early most days. So it was just Blue, Purple and Green, walking with their friend Orange.  In the past, there have been bullies. Two of which I have mentioned. But some never made it to the ‘something we really have to worry about’ stage. One of these bullies, particular to Blue, decided it was time to graduate to that stage in a very dangerous way. We’ll call him, ‘Mistake.’ Because what he chose to do was a big mistake on his part. The kids had made it to just before the opening of our neighborhood. They were on the sidewalk. They’d been carefree, joking, laughing, talking, when a vehicle suddenly sped its way toward them on the road. The vehicle had a passenger and a driver: Mistake. And as Mistake accelerated, one of them threw a full bottle of Powerade out the window as hard as he could. We’re fairly certain he was aiming for Blue.
It hit Green instead.  At that speed, with that much force, something as innocuous as a bottle of liquid can do real damage. It was only sheer luck that it hit Green in the leg. If it had hit him in the head, we’d all be sitting in a hospital room right now keeping vigil. That being said, Green is small. He’s skinny. The impact to his leg was enough to damage the muscles in his thigh. You can see the impact point, a literal imprint of the bottle on his skin. The bruising is very clear. The recovery will be slow. The first thing Green did was cling to Purple. Orange and Blue yelled after the car, but it had sped quickly away. The boys managed to get Green home right away. I had been working at my computer. And the next thing I knew, Green is in my arms, incoherent and in pain, crying so hard his whole body was shaking. Calling the police was an easy decision. Trying to hide my instant and unbridled rage was so much harder. The police are treating this as assault on a minor. The bottle was collected as evidence. Green was evaluated by physicians and will thankfully make a full physical recovery. But the emotional damage seems to be much worse. Green is not himself. He’s clingy, he’s worried, he’s having nightmares. He doesn’t want to walk home anymore, even knowing his brothers and Orange are there to protect him. His birthday is barely a week away, and he is trying so hard to be enthusiastic about it. But the bruise and pain in his leg keep offering reminders. The idea of leaving school grounds without one of his siblings or me makes him panic. And the light of innocence in his eyes is that much duller.
It was a senseless, useless act. One that’s rattled us all.
Blue and Purple are blaming themselves, as though they should have been able to see it coming and protect Green. Red is angry that she didn’t just wait to walk with them, as though her being there would have stopped it altogether. Their grandparents, friends, teachers, counselors, and even random people I have never heard of are all up in arms. They want someone to pay. I think Green just wants to pretend it never happened at all.
To be honest, I want Mistake to pay, too. Because it doesn’t matter who he was aiming at, this was clearly assault. Clearly intended to do harm. And I’m tired of feeling like I can’t protect my children.  When did the world become so cruel? When did parents stop teaching their children that kindness is not a weakness? When will I ever feel okay with sending my children out into such an unforgiving world? I know I’m angry. In fact, I’m enraged. But... I also still have hope. Green’s birthday is steadily approaching. The kids are doing everything they can think of to make him smile again, make him laugh, prove he’s loved and, most of all, safe. They’re using their hard earned money to get him gifts, to surprise him with a puppy they’re buying themselves, to give him his normalcy back. And I’m watching them hold on to each other through it all. Like they always have. Like, I hope, that they always will. The future is coming at them quickly. Red, Blue and Orange want to get an apartment together after high school. Purple and Green have decided they want to live together forever. And they’ve all decided that they have to make time, once a week or more, to be back under one roof.  We live in a small town, but they’re going to move on outside of it. Because the world outside of it is big, and they are well aware of that fact. They want to tackle it in their own way, individually and together. They want to see where this life takes them, no matter what tries to stop them. And they want to share that journey with each other, and with anyone who wants to be a part of it. I never could have predicted how close those four amazing kids would become, or how much they’ve already changed the world just by being who they are. They’re my hope, you see. In a world where anyone can be cruel, they choose to be kind. They choose to be the example by which everyone around them learns what kindness is. Misunderstood, Unwarranted, and Mistake are learning about kindness, too. Whether they realize it or not. Because in their misunderstood existence, in their unwarranted actions, in their irreversible mistakes, the kindness of the Sibling Mafia seems to be far more powerful.  This is a story about a world full of bullies and the four kids who never stop fighting them. One act of love, kindness, and hope at a time...

Hold Me Down Chapter 4
Yassss!!!! Hahaha!!!! Surprise!!! I was finally able to get this busted out!! Man, this chapter was...*whew*, it was a tough one! But she’s done and ready to read! It’s not fully edited because I’m too excited and want to post it now but I hope you guys like it!
@dieguzguz a special thank you to you, my dear. Sam, this would’ve been a train wreck if it weren’t for you. Thank you so much for being honest and putting me on the right track when I was going through my rough patch. With your help and advice, I was able to make this chapter everything it should be. Thank you!
The car ride was awkward. I felt like a five-year-old being forced to go to church on a Sunday morning, except I was a 27-year-old adult, being forced to move in with someone I hadn’t known for a full week. Someone, mind you, that had threatened to kill me and who I ended up holding a knife to. Part of me worried that I would wake up to one to my throat.
Atlanta was a decently sized, and with the traffic, it took us forever to get to our destination. The penthouse was on the outskirts of the city, giving what seemed to be a nice view of the city. But it had to have been built recently, the structure shiny and the windows huge. It’s almost intimidating as Randy turns, swiping a card at the gated entrance to the parking underneath.
The parking lot is dark, and I can’t help but remember all those scary movies I had seen in my lifetime so far. I eye Randy, because I know Viking Princess—Jane—is someone I can handle. I didn’t think Randy, or Jane, was a threat to me, especially in the light of current events. But in my life, you couldn’t be too sure. Someone was always ready to plunge a knife in your back, whether you were looking or not.
And I almost groan at the reminder of what I had agreed to. I didn’t know how the hell this was going to even work. I could pretend to be anything, anyone, to get what I needed. A businesswoman, a shallow woman who didn’t understand majority of things, even an escort at one low point in my life. But I had never tried to enter a fake engagement. I didn’t have the type of patience or time for that. A long con wasn’t something Dutch talked much about, despite teaching us the skill to do it. But cons were never the goal. No, our goal was much more sinister than that.
I rub my hands together as we park the SUV, glancing around to try and see through the tinted glass, but failing. As they step out of the vehicle, I follow suit, unsure of where exactly we were going, but I can tell that the garage is a few degrees cooler than being outside. It’s a nice relief, even if the eerie lighting threw me off. It didn’t, however, stop me from eyeing the line of cars.
An empty parking spot laid between a black Lexus and dark blue Jaguar F Type, making me curious to what was missing. I raised a brow, however, as I spotted an old black Mustang at the end of the line. Jane and Randy kept walking, as if it was absolutely normal, and it’s then that it occurs to me that maybe there were more people living in the building. I couldn’t wait to slip away to sweet talk the owner of the Mustang.
Stopping, Jane waves something in front of the elevator, a key card of some sort, and the elevator doors open. I’m grateful, as we ascend, that there isn’t any awkward elevator music playing to add to the odd atmosphere. I want to believe that this could fall under some sort of kidnapping, but I knew that wasn’t the case. I had come willingly, even if it felt like I didn’t really have the choice. Which seemed to be a reoccurring theme as of late.
So lost in my own thoughts, the ding of the elevator made me jump, forcing myself to face the reality of my new environment. The lights were off, indicating that no one was home. Despite the dark home, the massive windows at the other end showed the sun setting and the lights of the city shining around us. Mesmerized I walk forward, leaving Randy and Jane behind in the foyer. The lights switch on, and I realize that there’s a balcony there, the glass doors blending in perfectly with the windows, almost as if they weren’t there at all. The pool water sparkled, the blue of it creating a glow that clashed with the darkness of its surroundings. My skin itched to feel the gentle caress of the water, and I could bet anything that it was temperature controlled.
“I can show you to your room.” Randy called. I glanced over to see him waiting patiently at the bottom of a floating staircase, the dark black slabs embedded into the wall.
“Okay.” I replied, turning away from the view to follow him.
There were a couple of doors that we passed until we came to a small indent, not exactly a hallway, but something with a door on either side. “That’s John’s room.” Randy nodded to the right side. “If you need anything, he’s right across the way.”
I almost flinch a bit as Randy opened the door on the left. I’m sure he meant it to be reassuring, but I couldn’t bring myself to feel it. I was a misplaced object in this odd museum. The feeling just grows worse as we step into the room. The greys, blacks, and whites contradicting each other. It was probably the biggest bedroom I had ever seen, and my gut twists. Why the hell did someone ever find this necessary?
Randy gently placed the bag down on the bed and turned to me. “Take a few minutes to adjust and then come back downstairs. Jane is gonna whip something up for you.”
“And the prince himself?” I asked, continuing to look around.
“John is going to be out late tonight. He said that you were to eat something and to feel as comfortable as possible. You’re allowed to look around, most of the penthouse is open to you. His office and bedroom are off limits, though.”
I scoffed as I met Randy’s dark brown eyes. “Oh please, as if I would ever want to go anywhere near his bedroom.”
Randy’s lips grow into a tight line, but I can’t tell if he’s holding back laughter or a retort. Either way, it didn’t matter. He walked out, leaving me alone in my new gilded cage. I slowly walk around, noting how the windows were floor to ceiling, no way of getting out, especially from this high up. My skin crawled at the thought of there not being a way out, and I focused on my breathing. In and out slowly, because I wouldn’t let this get the better of me.
My fingers skim the silk fabric of the bedding, pressing down a bit, almost shocked at how soft it was. Feeling more like a child, I hop up on the bed and fall back. I sighed, my eyes closing briefly. I didn’t know what kind of mattress this was, but holy shit, was it heavenly. I open my eyes and stare at the ceiling. I feel this overwhelming urge to cry, the heavy feeling settling into my chest. I was finally given just a moment to myself, to be able to actually take a damn breath, and all I wanted to do was cry. I’ve been arrested, kidnapped, backed into a corner and forced into a fake engagement all while losing my apartment. There was no safe space for me anymore, nowhere for me retreat to. I was locked away with someone that was a clear threat if not handled correctly, and god, it was terrifying. I hadn’t felt less level of apprehension since Dutch. Always laying awake at night, scared of what next test he had in store. Part of me worried to waking with John’s hands around my throat.
A knock on the door sounded, making me jump. “Yeah?”
“Food’s done.” Randy called and I could hear his retreat.
“That was fast.” I muttered as I rolled of the bed, my feet landing on the soft rug as I kicked off my boots.
On the way down the stairs, I cling to the railing as my socks slid on my first step, and I refused to have ‘falling down the stairs’ added to the day’s events. I didn’t want to make any more of a fool of myself than I already have. I eyed Jane as I went though, noticing that she leaned against the counter and texted on her phone. Cringing, I eyed the bruising that began to develop from me breaking her nose. I felt a bit bad for it.
“So…what exactly am I eating?” I asked as I slowly made my way to the island in the center of the kitchen. It was modern—like everything else—with the island bar made wholly of white marble. The cabinets and counters of the rest of it was pitch black with a black and white marble black splash. I would be lying if I had said I wasn’t at least a bit envious. It was gorgeous, everything sleek and clean, all the appliances matching perfectly.
Jane cleared her throat and shoved her phone away as I sat at the bar, my hands resting against the cool surface. “I uh, made you grilled cheese. Hope that’s okay.” She muttered before placing a plate in front of me.
“Yeah, that’s totally fine.” I gave her a small smile, but she didn’t see it. I could smell the cheesy goodness, the sandwich cut in half diagonally, showing off the golden melted cheese. I took a bite, the cheese oozing in my mouth. Chewing and swallowing, I watch as she leans back against the counter. She looks exhausted. Another twinge of guilt. “Hey, look, I’m sorry about the nose thing. It wasn’t personal.”
Jane’s sharp green eyes find mine with a raised brow. “Not gonna lie, part of me wants punch you to call it even, but I’m gonna ask in all fairness: how likely am I to win that fight?”
“Hmm.” I smirk before tearing off a piece of the sandwich. “Not very.”
She shakes her head with a laugh as I take another bite. “You know it’s Jacob that trains us, and to have your small ass put me on my face in front of my fiancé and trainer is extremely humiliating. Although, I gotta say as a fan of dramatics in that department,” she threw a mischievous look, raising her brow playfully. “That was pretty badass.”
“Thanks.” I laugh a little as I continue to pick at my food. “So, what happens now?”
“Now,” she sighed. “We play the game. You’ll need to keep a low profile while we set the stage. Obviously, it would be strange if it got out that you were living with John before you’re at least spotted together in public. If we play it right, I think we could make it seem like you’ve been secretly dating the past few months.”
“To the public?”
“Right. But as for the feds and Drubmans? They’ll see that you’ve wrapped John Seed around your finger, doing your job as the engagement gets announced.”
Finishing off half of the sandwich, I gave her a look. “When is that?”
“I don’t know. Honestly, I think it’s all a bit cliché. Just stage a damn break in. Rough John up a bit, break in for fake documents or something.”
I laughed at her as Jane shrugged. “There’s an idea.”
There was a relief in finding some common ground with Jane, something I didn’t realize I truly needed up until now. I didn’t have any allies here, but maybe I wouldn’t have to be so alone. The idle chatter between us was slow, nothing deep, both of us guarded. The trust wasn’t there, and I had to respect her for being smart enough to not give away any details I could use.
After I was finished, she offered a tour, but I stubbornly refused. I was going to walk around his palace and admire what he was, but that didn’t help me from my eyes wondering, eyeing the pictures of family here and there. Most of it was just abstract paintings he decorated on his walls, but I could see a family painting and a few pictures. There were black and white shots of planes on the wall behind me, for whatever reason. I crushed my curiosity down out of pride.
I finally called it a night, throwing Jane a good night over my shoulder as I made my way back to the room I was assigned. Locking the door behind me, I sighed heavily. I could watch tv for the rest of the night, allow myself to slip into a mindless state to help with the tension that I was feeling. But my curiosity finally won out as I started to explore my room in more depth. I walked over to the double doors on the other side of the room, wishfully hoping it was a way to escape.
As I ripped the doors opened, I am both star-shocked and disappointed. Part of me wanted it to lead to a secret balcony of some sort, but what I found instead was an unnecessarily huge walk-in closet. I flipped the light on to see the racks completely filled with clothes: dresses, suits, designer jeans and shirts. There were sunglasses, jewelry, and shoes.
I almost died as I knelt down to check the bottom of the shelves, eyeing the boots that sat there innocently. It was like a damn bookshelf, all the boots at the bottom with a few gym shoes and then…then the heels made up for the rest of it. My eyes widened at the sight of a few Doc Martens, a regular pair, one knee high, and the last was heeled. I couldn’t help but smile in excitement, my love for boots knew no bounds in all honestly. I moved on, checking out the assortment of heels. Most were black, some blue, silver, and grey. There were a few red and burgundy ones, too, and I couldn’t help but…feel a bit of unease.
Frowning, I glance back around, noting the colors—or lack thereof—and I felt a chill. It was strange to me that somehow, whoever did this, knew my taste. Knew my style well enough to pull it off. I turned, grabbed a heel, eyeing that famous red sole before checking the size. I dropped it as if I had been burned, then ripped a black business professional dress off the hanger and checked the tag. A shaky breath escaped my lips as the dress slipped to the floor. Everything was in my size…how the fuck did this happen?
Catching sight of a gown bag, I swallowed before rushing over. I pulled it, carefully unzipping it as I went. Pulling a side back, I drop it and scramble away. Newly dry cleaned and packed perfectly away, was the same dress I wore that night at the gala. I tried to take a calming breath, convincing myself it was a coincidence and that I was just paranoid. But I’ve done this for so long, my instincts couldn’t help but scream, warning me that this was all just too much to not mean something, but I wasn’t sure what. He had seen the dress, maybe he had bought it knowing that. But that didn’t explain everything else.
I’m hesitant, because lately every time I tried to dig, something bad ended up happening to me. My curiosity had done nothing positive for me in weeks, and this was no better. I didn’t want to see this, I didn’t want to acknowledge the possibilities…but I wouldn’t be alive today if hadn’t done those things. Biting my lip, I slowly think up for a plan to see what I could find. A visit to a certain friend could help put things in motion in finding out anything I needed to know. So, I walk out of the closet with a bitter thought of how anyone could afford—or deserve to afford—even half the shit in that damn closet.
Those were my thoughts as I woke up the next morning in the slate grey sheets and expensive down comforter. Worse case scenario I suffered through this for a few months, getting a taste of what I could have when this was all over. It wasn’t that bad. I had protection, slept at a penthouse, all needs were taken care of. I could put up with the insufferable asshole. I had the patience for that.
Right?
I eyed the closet doors and felt a twist of doubt, unsure if I did. Half of me screamed to ignore it and keep my hand down for the sake of getting by without causing anymore trouble. The other demanded answers, curiosity and anger working together to piece every little thing together.
Groaning, I sat up and made my way to the bathroom, doing my usual morning routine. Throwing on a pair of black shorts and adjusting my tank top, I cautiously open the bedroom door. The smell of bacon hit me immediately, and I could hear the sizzling of something. I sighed in relief, shutting the door behind me and running my hand through my hair. If Jane was here, that would make me feel at least a tad better, even though I was the reason she was sporting black eyes now.
My feet hit the cold surface of the stairs as I made my descent, glancing over once the kitchen came into view, and freezing on the spot. I debate running back up the stairs, but he glances over his shoulder at me. There’s no going back now.
I would have never guessed that John could cook, and even if he did, I didn’t think him the kind of person to cook for himself. So, it’s a shock to me, and it’s the excuse I use as I stare at him. His back is bare, with him being in only grey sweatpants that hung low on his hips. It gave me the perfect view of his tattoos. A huge black and blue raven spreading across his shoulder blades, a symbol on his left shoulder, a knife and snake under it, and a plethora of smaller, individual ones along his forearm. I couldn’t get a better look on his other side, but I was so sure that he had others. And as much as I admired the ink across his skin, it was the lines of scars that threw me.
Taking my time, I continued down while keeping a watchful eye on him. I had underestimated him; I knew that much. I just wasn’t sure how much. Joseph showed some cards yesterday, enough for me to know and understand that crossing him would be a terrible mistake on my part. But John…he was still a mystery, and I couldn’t afford any more surprises.
“Wren.” He looked over his shoulder briefly once more, before turning back. It’s alien, how my name falls from his lips. It makes me feel something else that I don’t know how to place. “It’s about time. I thought I would have to come up and make sure you hadn’t died in your sleep.” He called as I stood by the island. His voice had a deepness, almost husky, and I wondered if he sounded like that every morning. Up close I could see the red scars better. Some were random lines, others were words. Sins carved into his skin harshly, as I spy Sloth under his right forearm along with the other tattoos there. I force my attention away from it, swallowing my curious questions.
“I thought Jane would be making breakfast.” I shot back with a shrug that he couldn’t see, so focused on the skillet in front of him. “I was disappointed.”
John moved, transferring whatever he made onto a plate. “Jane is with Faith at their house. She doesn’t stay here. Faith prefers her fiancée at home.” He turned with the plate in his hand, placing it on the island and pointing at the barstool. “Sit. You need to eat.”
Any retort died in my throat as he fished his phone out of his pocket. His chest was well toned and lean. He wasn’t big like Jacob seemed to be, but he had muscle to him. Part of me wondered how much of a challenge he would be if it were an actual fair fight, just him and I. His body was lithe, for sure, so not only would he have strength on his side, but he would be fast, too. I’ve already had a taste of that.
My eyes trace the lines of the scales he has tattooed just under his chest and ending just above his belly button, with another starting right under. A smaller version of the symbol in the center as dark lines and shading to give it a dark glow, with a design underneath that was cut off by his pants. I sat down, feeling uncomfortably warm, and looked down at the plate. “I’d appreciate you not acting like you’re my dad, telling me what to do.” I snarked.
John stopped texting to throw me a dark look, the corners of his mouth twisting the slightest in a smirk, opening his mouth to say something. He stopped himself, hesitating, before his mouth forms a tight line. “Just eat.” He began typing away again, his hair falling in his face a bit. “We’re going to have to announce our…relationship to the public soon. I’ve made a reservation for us this weekend. It’ll give your face time to heal and the sooner we get this going, the better.” He sighed, running a hand through his hair as he tossed his phone on the counter. “I hope you like Italian.”
He leaned against the counter, his hands gripping the edge as he stared at me. I almost rolled my eyes. How this man could be nothing but business while walking around in sweats was just ridiculous. “Oh good, I love spaghetti.” He said nothing, but I could see the frustration and ire working its way into his eyes. “I’m kidding. Italian is fine.” This time I did roll my eyes.
“Good. There’s plenty of clothes in your closet, and I hope you found something that suits your taste in the bathroom. I don’t know what brands you use, or whatever.” His phone buzzed, gaining his attention.
“You were the one that did that?” I asked, raising a brow at him, my thoughts going to mystery of the wardrobe I had been given. John snapped his gaze to mine.
“No.” he answered, quickly and almost snapping at me. Clearing his throat, he continued. “No, Whitney and Faith did that. I couldn’t be bothered with it. She thought you and Jane were about the same size.”
I narrowed my eyes at him when he looked away. That was…awfully fast, especially for the amount that littered that damn closet. It didn’t really make sense, but I shove it aside, not wanting to start a fight first thing in the morning. “And here I thought it was for the women I’m sure you have milling in and out.”
Ah. So much for no fighting. Pull a punch only to throw another. Good job, Wren.
But John scoffed, a small smirk on his lips. “My one-night stands don’t stay, my dear. And no one would ever be allowed to keep anything here, let alone a full closet of that size.” He threw me a taunting look. “Which I’m sure you’ll understand.”
I frowned, my nose wrinkling. “What is that supposed to mean?”
“I mean you seducing all those men you con—”
I threw my head back, a laugh escaping before I look back at him. “Oh, no. I don’t sleep with my marks. Ever. That’s a rule of mine. I don’t ever mix business with pleasure. Besides, most of those men are old and cringy. No thank you.”
“Why?” he asked, folding his arms as he leaned against them on the island. “Bad experience?” He smirked at his own innuendo and I hesitated. I didn’t trust him, not by a long shot, and I didn’t want to ever give him something to use against me. But on the other hand, he was supposed to be an ally, my employer’s brother, and for this particular job, my partner. So, against my better judgement, I decide to be honest.
“When we’re recruited, we learn that creating ties is dangerous.” I stared, playing with the food with a fork. “So, we’re taught how to kind of…shut our emotions away.” Sighing I give him a look. “And for some people, it’s harder said than done.”
He quirked his brow at me. “You don’t have sex because you will get emotionally attached?” John laughed. “Oh, you’re one of those. A bit needy and can get a bit clingy because they end up wanting something more.”
I immediately frowned, irritation making my face hot. Fucking playboys. “No, I don’t sleep with them because they’re disgusting, greedy leeches, and it’s unprofessional. Sex complicates everything, because you’re always messing with someone’s emotions, and that’s where I draw my line. I’m in the game of stealing, not manipulating someone’s emotions just because I can. That being said,” I hopped off the stool, pushing the plate away, before I lean close to him. “Just because some women want something more, and have feelings, doesn’t make them needy or clingy. In fact, they aren’t the ones to blame at all. It’s not their fault you’re a heartless asshole.”
I turned, making my way back up the stairs without another word.
Coming back down a bit later, I found him no where in sight. Jane and Randy sat at the island instead, playing poker. They looked up at the sound of my approach. “I need a car. Unless you two wanna drive me around all day, although I would prefer to be alone.”
Randy hesitated looking uneasy. “Uh, I don’t think—”
“Just give her the keys to the Lexus. John has been using the Audi, he’s not gonna miss it.” Jane cut him off, throwing me a smirk. I couldn’t help but return it, the guilt slowly faded away more as the mutual respect began to grow between us. I had a feeling we were going to get along just fine.
He gave Jane one more look before turning back to me. “The table in the foyer, there’s a black tray where he keeps his keys. Do not grab anything other than the keys for his Lexus.” Randy warned, pointing at me. I rolled my eyes, making my way over.
I raised a brow, seeing the keys neatly laid out. How many cars did this guy have? I rolled my eyes, grabbing the Lexus key fob. I was ready to get the fuck out of here and see what I could find, both with the wardrobe confusion and the apartment issue.
Duncan, you asshole.
I huffed as I parked on the side of the street, eyeing the building. This was the right place, right? Checking my mirror, I open the door and exit the car. I immediately miss the air conditioning, but I push that aside. I was on a mission and this was long overdue. I should have done this before anything else, but it had gotten away from me. I guess being kidnapped had a way of taking up your time.
The building was beautiful to say the least. And I wasn’t sure how the owner did it, mixing between old and modern. It was one of the classier tattoo shops I’ve come across. Made that familiar urge rise up within me again, that familiar and comforting sting that always left something beautiful behind.
Pain was temporary, but vanity…vanity was forever.
Making a mental note to come up with some ideas, I pushed the glass door open. This had to be the one. It was the only tattoo shop close to Mary May’s sports bar, and she did mention it was down the road. I would hunt them down, one by one, though. How many tattoo parlors could Atlanta have anyway? I was determined.
The air conditioning was welcoming when I entered, and a bell dinged to announce my arrival. The inside was gorgeous, to say the least. Dark walls with light flooring, a red accent wall that made the room pop in a way that drew you in. While most of it was sleek, there were Victorian touches here and there, from the plush couch to the light fixtures. A beautiful balance.
“Hold on, I’m comin’!” A male voice drawled, and I couldn’t help but allow my lips to curl into a smirk. I broadened when Sharky came around the corner. He stopped short, seeing me standing in the lobby, and I watched as he took a second to recover. “Oh. Hey there, Shorty. What’cha up to?”
I watched the way he shifted his weight from foot to foot while shoving his hands in his green hoodie. “Nothing much. I was in the neighborhood and thought I would drop by. Mary May said you got a new gig here recently. Didn’t know you were an artist, Sharky.”
“Oh, well.” He cleared his throat while throwing me a sheepish smile. “I actually do the piercings, you see. I ain’t good at drawing or any of that fancy stuff.”
I laughed, shaking my head. “To each their own. But uh…I came here for a reason.”
Catching onto my meaningful stare, he jumped with eyes wide. “Oh! Yeah, follow me this way. We can talk back here.” Sharky turned with a wave of his hand, and I followed him back down the hallway. I eyed the work hung up on the walls, but nothing stood out specifically to me. Just drawings or pictures of work that was done, very good work.
“Who did all these?” I asked.
“Our boss.” Sharky called over his shoulder as he opened a door at the end of the hallway. “He doesn’t come around much with his big-shot career taking up most of his time, but when he is here, he ain’t got any extra time. You gotta book him months in advance.”
I raised my brow, impressed. I’ve had my fair share of experience with talented artists, so it wasn’t that shocking that someone was so in demand. What was shocking was the fact that it wasn’t this man’s main gig. A big-shot career? What the hell did this guy do? And that question became even bigger as I stepped into what I assumed to be his office. Huge glass desk with a fancy computer, with blotch tests framed and amazing abstract paintings hung proudly on the walls. What really caught my attention was the one painting that seemed to be misplaced.
It was religious, that was for sure. A dark version of the Garden of Eden, Eve being entangled naked by a snake while Adam gripped her and bled. I had never seen anything like it before, but something about made you just stare. Sharky finally caught onto what had grabbed my attention.
“Oh yeah. He uh, he has an obsession with religion. I mean, some of his family does, too. Especially his parents, so…there are pieces like that in some of our rooms. Each one is inspired by a sin, I think.”
“And this one?”
“I think it’s supposed to be temptation or something. Or a warning to not touch snakes or naked ladies. I’m not sure.”
I shook my head. “Listen, I came here to check on you and discuss some business. I also need a favor.”
Sharky shifted uneasily. “What’s up?”
“I had some cops, and a fed, tell me they shook you down for information on me. They obviously have been following me because they had a photo of us talking. Any chance that they got anything on you?”
“Feds?” he asked throwing me a confused look. “Nah, nobody approached me.”
“Then what made you have a career change?” I asked.
“Thought it would be a good idea to make legit money, too. Besides, my boss wanted me.
“Is this the same guy whose name was on my lease?” Sharky flinched, giving me my answer, and I sighed. “Damn it, Sharky. I told you to put it under me—”
“My boss wouldn’t let me.”
“What do you mean?”
Sharky paled, making a show of glancing at a watch he didn’t own. “Oh, look. I gotta go—”
I immediately stepped into this path, crossing my arms as I blocked the door. “Sharky, explain. Now.”
“Okay!” he threw his hands up in defense. “My boss…well, he knows about you. Like, knows that you’re a total badass and stuff. So…he invested.”
“Invested?” I asked, an uneasy feeling coming over me. I thought I was flying under the radar, only coming out of the shadows because John had caught me. “What do you mean he knows about me?”
“Well,” he rubbed the back of his neck, unwilling to meet my eyes. “he knows of you. Knows what you can do. And well, he’s my boss Shorty. I can’t do business with just anybody.”
“Sharky, you’re a fence. That’s exactly what youre supposed to do.”
“It’s more complicated than that.” He mumbled, staring at his feet. “If it weren’t for my boss, I’d be dead. He saved my life. So, no, I only do fence work for him and who he allows.”
My brows furrowed. This was supposed to clear up things, not making them more confusing. “What do you mean?”
“I don’t really want to talk about it, but my aunt got me out of some…family issues. And well, my boss took me under his wing, kinda. Protected me, you know?” My heart tugged for him. I knew family issues all too well, and he was lucky to have someone to be there for him. Well, fuck.
“So, this ‘Duncan’ is your boss?” I sighed. “And he…invested?”
Sharky perked up at the change of my tone. “Yeah! He was like, super impressed with what you did in L.A., so yeah. He invested.”
“He…he knows about what happened in Cali?” I breathed out, a chill going over my spine.
Of all the things, that wasn’t something I would want anyone to witness. I was still licking my wounds from my wounded pride, my actually injuries healed long ago. It was the first time I had been caught, a tip was given, and I had found myself fighting for my life. I was lucky enough to avoid law enforcement, which seemed to be a miracle. I definitely left a lasting impression and I wasn’t sure if I would ever walk into that city again. Not that I would ever miss it. Good riddance.
“Yeah, but don’t worry.” He waved it off with a roll of his eyes. “He ain’t worried ‘bout all that.”
“So…when you bought me that dress…” I trailed off, the dress coming to mind as I gave him a look.
“He did. I ain’t that good at woman shopping.” Sharky replied with a laugh. “He has good taste, knows exactly what to get. That knife strap still working good?”
“The strap is fine.” I replied absentmindly. I had returned that dress, never keeping things that I used or wore on jobs to destroy any connection. I didn’t like this, not one bit. There was an extremely small chance it was a coincidence. It might not have even been the same dress I wore, just a replica that Whitney had bought. It could have been a joke on John’s part. Perhaps I was just reaching due to paranoia. I sighed and decided to change the subject. But…about that favor?”
“What do you need?” he asked cautiously.
“I need a new set of throwing knives. Just like, three of them. Custom made with the blue blades.”
Sharky threw his head back and groaned. “Girly, you know how much those cost? You want regular throwing knives, I got you. But those customized ones? My boss—”
“If he’s really invested, then he’ll get them.” I replied sternly. “I’m assuming he’s going to want me to do a job for him then?”
Sharky sighed, shaking his head. “It’s complicated. I don’t know what the dude wants, but he keeps the money comin’ for yah.”
“Well…that might be a blessing with what work I have cut out in front of me.” I walked towards the desk, finding it neat and clear of any documentation. Nothing that I could swipe, but there were interesting paperweights and fancy pens. No pictures of family…nothing. “I got myself tied up in a job for the next few months, at least.”
“Job with who?” he asked, not even noticing me taking note of everything I could. I was desperate for a clue, for anything, that could lead me to who this guy was. I didn’t like that someone was watching from the shadows.
“I don’t think I’m really allowed to say.” I replied turning back to him. “I know that I’m gone once it’s over. Tell your boss I appreciate…whatever it is that he did, but I don’t think I’m interested in whatever he has in mind. I just want the knives.”
Sharky shrugged. “I don’t think he has anything in mind, just interested in yah. You want me to deliver those knives somewhere special?”
I snorted. “You can have him deliver them himself to get rid of all this mystery bullshit. But if that can’t be arranged, I can just stop by here. Either way.”
Sharky gave a nod. I was tired of all this suspense, all these surprises that seemed to come out of nowhere. I didn’t know how many people were involved with this, but I was hoping that I had reached the end. Having another player in the game wasn’t something I could afford at the moment. I couldn’t even handle my new roommate, let alone Drubman and the feds breathing down my neck. Which reminded me that I needed to check in sooner rather than later before they hunted me down.
I only stayed for a few more hours, talking and joking with him. I didn’t get a whole lot of time with Sharky, or anyone for that matter. I never really allowed myself to make friends, and I always viewed him, and Mary May, more along the lines of associates or colleagues than anything. But I had found myself growing more and more fond of these people, no matter how much I tried to avoid it.
Finally, waving goodbye, I exited the shop and back into the heat of Atlanta. Somehow, I had managed to kill most of the day, which was fine by me. Normally I was a home body, but with my new living arrangement, I was desperate to get out of the house. Suddenly I found that I enjoyed being out and about.
I turned, checking to see Sharky gone as I pulled out my phone and clicked on her contact. Bringing it to my ear, I listened to it ring. I knew she was about to get busy, but I was hoping she would answer anyway.
“Hello?” Mary May answered, relief flooding over me.
“Hey, May. It’s me.”
“Well, look who decided to stick around. I assumed you were still here since you never swung by to say bye.” There was a beat of silence, but not enough for me to answer. “Wait, unless you’re already gone. Did you leave without saying bye, you asshole?”
I chuckled at her. She was always so damn mouthy. “No, I’m still here in Atlanta.” Unfortunately. “But I’m calling you because I need a favor. Can you look someone up for me?”
“Oh.” She sounded shocked, but she recovered quickly. “Yeah, sure. What’s the name?”
“Duncan. Male, I think.”
“First or last?”
“Yeah, I’m not entirely sure.” I replied almost sheepishly.
Mary May sighed. “Wren, do you have any idea how common that name is? That’s going to take me forever.”
“Well, apparently he’s a big-time businessman here in Atlanta, so that could help. He also owns a tattoo shop. Oh, and the bastard was renting my apartment the whole fucking time. There’s that.”
Mary May hesitated. “Wait…tattoo parlor? Wren, where are you?”
“In Atlanta—”
“Where exactly?” she pressed. I frowned as she sighed. Where the hell was this coming from. “Like, what’s the name of the parlor?”
“It’s the one Sharky is working with. I dropped by and said hey.” I said, brushing it aside.
“Does Sharky know you’re doing this?”
“What he doesn’t know won’t kill him.” I replied impatiently. “His boss has a keen interest, and I have every intention on finding out who has their eye on me.”
Mary May groaned. “Why do I get the feeling this is going to end badly? I can already tell this is going to turn into a ‘Wren-Gets-Into-More-Trouble-Than-She-Anticipated’ moment.”
“Where’s your faith, May?”
“Extremely low considering the last week.”
“Oh…well yeah, that’s fair.”
“So, the name of the tattoo parlor?”
“Right, hang on.” I turned back, checking to make sure Sharky was still out of sight before my eyes fall to the glass. “It’s called—"
I froze, frowning as I eyed the decal on the window. I can’t help but feel irritated, knowing that I had seen that symbol somewhere but couldn’t think of where for the life of me. I pinched the bridge of my nose as a headache began to form.
“Wren?”
“Oh, yeah. Uhm, it’s called Garden of…of Eden…?” I almost scoffed. There was no fucking way. “Yeah, okay, so this guy is religious. Or likes to play with a religious theme. I half expect him to be old and gross. And if that’s the case, tell him I’m a lesbian.”
She snorted. “Yeah, okay. I’ll see what I can find.”
“Thank you.” Just as I hung up, a little alert came through, announcing a new text. As I read it, my heart sank. Fuck.
Update? You’ve been silent too long. -JH
Welp. There was that. With everything going on, I completely forgot that I was actually supposed to be checking in with them, giving updates as things progressed. I bit my lip, trying hard to think of a good response. If they found out I had moved in with John, they would know something was up. This had to be done delicately or we were all screwed. Me, above the rest, though.
Made some progress with the youngest brother. Having dinner. Will keep you updated.
Shoving the phone in my pocket, I make my way to my new car. I was just ready to crawl in bed, sleep forever, and pretend this wasn’t fucking happening. This had only gotten worse, people shifting their attention towards me like never before. It was annoying and I wanted it over with. I couldn’t wait to leave, to go somewhere secluded where no one would ever be able to find me unless I wanted them to.
I drove back quickly, doing my best to avoid the traffic. Eyeing the black Audi, I groan. That only meant that John was back, and I really didn’t have the patience for this asshole anymore today. Part of me hoped that he would be holed up in his office, and I took comfort in it.
But all of that came crashing down when I stepped into the penthouse, loud music playing, the lights dimmed except for his massive lounge. Laughter and thrilled shrieking joined the music, forcing my headache to get even worse. I began to make my way over cautiously, eyeing Jane as she leaned against the separating wall of the room and hallway. She gave me a look as I stepped into the light of the room.
Nothing in this world really shocks me anymore, but I have to hand it to him, John Seed kept me on my toes. “What the fuck?’ I muttered under my breath, taking in the scene before me. John had the same suit on from this morning, or what was left of it. The vest was gone along with the jacket, his sleeves rolled up and the woman half across his lap must have been responsible for unbuttoning half the buttons, or ripping them, seeing that there were a few scattered on the floor. She was in a bright red dress that clung to her curves almost revealing, and she had no issue with pressing all of it against him. Her blonde hair curled and falling messily out of some sort of updo.
The two men on the adjacent part of the couch were no better. Though the women that accompanied them seemed a bit…paid for. They were older, rich by the looks of it, and I’m sure they lived like kings. I recognized one as Charles, the man I had tried to steal from, and the other was a man I hadn’t seen before. He had a half-assed combover with a gut.
“Who the fuck is this?”
I turned at the sound of the blonde’s shitty tone. Her red lipstick is a bit smeared, leaving some on the collar of John’s shirt and his neck. The eyeliner being smudged gave her a coked-out vibe that I wasn’t sure sat well with me, and eyeing the living room table, I found out why. Lines of white powder, nice and neat, laid contrasting against the black glass, and looking at John, I could see remnants of is in his facial hair. His eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his face flushed out. He looked at her with a lazy smile.
“No one, Holly. Don’t worry about her.” John drawled.
I narrowed my eyes at him as Jane sighed behind me. My jaw ticked as I tried to evaluate the situation. I felt like I had just come home to find my husband cheating, and not in the sense that I was betrayed by someone I loved. No. It was the feeling like I was the butt of a joke, that I was to be humiliated, and I was pathetic even being here to confront him for it.
“Right. I’m no one.” I echoed emptily. He caught my gaze once more, the challenge there in his eyes. “That’s exactly how the conversation went.” I’m not a jealous girlfriend—or fiancé—in this moment. I’m a pissed off business partner, who has found just how irresponsible her associate is; that had realized that this was a side of John Seed that wasn’t expected. I might have hated John Seed, but he had my respect.
Until now.
John smirked before hanging his head back. “Please go away. The last thing I want to deal with now is you. You’re ruining my fun with my friends.”
“Your friends?” I scoffed. A sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach made me cringe. “You call these people your friends?”
He laughs, looking at Holly. “She doesn’t even like to have sex. Such a fucking prude. Doesn’t know how to have fun.”
“That’s okay, sweetheart.” The fat one called. “You can come over here and I’ll teach yah!”
I scoffed glancing down at my shoes, trying to ignore the sting in my chest, and I look back up with a mocking laugh. “No, I have more self-respect than that. Unlike the other’s in this room, it seems.” I walk closer to John, his smirk falling at my words as I lean down. “Yeah, I might not be on your level of a good fucking time, and I lie, manipulate, and steal.” I sneered lowly as Holly returned to the table with a rolled up hundred-dollar bill. “But what I don’t do…is lie to myself. I don’t pretend to be someone I’m not for the sake of so-called friends that want nothing from me, but drugs and money. I don’t fill that dark hole with useless shit.” I lean back, taking a step away. “I may not have liked you, but I at least respected you. Disappointing that you don’t.” I sighed, looking at his little plaything. Clearing my throat, making a show of wiping my nose. “You gotta little something…”
She glared at me, rubbing the back of her hand against her nose, but traces of cocaine lingered. “Fuck off!”
“Classy.” I replied unamused, before quickly turning and walking out. “I hope you enjoy yourselves.” Jane met my gaze as I passed her, her eyes sad and tired. My heart is heavy for her, knowing that it was not just her boss, but her brother-in-law in there, wasting his life away on the things that didn’t matter. For people who would never give a shit about him.
“He wasn’t always like that, you know.”
I stop as I enter the main hall, my eyes catching the sight of Joseph leaning against the wall in the dark. He’s wearing a simple suit, similar to what he had worn yesterday, with the same damn sunglasses. “What? Arrogant, misguided, and heartless?”
He threw me a look, those eyes searching my soul until he pushed himself off the wall. “Walk with me.” Giving a slight nod towards the balcony outside, I walk next to him slowly.
Joseph is completely at ease, despite this not being his scene. He seemed so out of place, but he took it in stride. He pushed the sliding glass door open, the cooler air hitting us as we stepped out. Shutting the door behind us, he turned and walked towards the railing, leaning against it as he admired the view. It was fully dark by now, the lights of the city competing with the stars in the sky.
“My brother is most of those things and more, but heartless isn’t one of them.” Joseph finally spoke, drawing my attention to him, seeing the lights reflect in the yellow lens. “He would like you to believe that, because well…I guess that would make him stronger…untouchable, in a sense, yes?”
I leaned with him, deep in thought and hanging onto his every word. “Yes, I suppose that would make anyone feel invincible.”
“Hmm.” He gave me a glance before turning back and sighing. “John used to be such a loving child, constantly laughing and smiling, believe it or not. His parents…his parents ripped that from him.”
“You mean your parents.” I corrected with a furrowed brow, but Joseph just shook his head and looked at me.
“No, I mean John’s parents.” He cleared his throat a bit before continuing. “I’m going to tell you this because I need this to work between the two of you. I need you to work together and right now, that partnership is in flames. Anymore stress, and one of you is bound to explode, and John is infamous for his anger issues, especially to his enemies. And Ms. Blake, despite only knowing you for only 24 hours, I do not with that upon you. But this goes nowhere, do you understand? This stays between us.”
It’s quiet for a second as his eyes drill into mine, and I realize he’s waiting for an answer. “Oh. Yes, of course. I understand. I won’t say a word.”
Satisfied, he turned back to the city and I followed suit, hyperaware of Joseph’s words as they fall from his lips. “I suppose I should start from the very beginning. Our father was a…god fearing man. Knew the bible like the back of his hand. And while he held bible verses in one, he held a drink in another. He was an alcoholic and well…he took a lot of it out on us.”
“And your mother?” I whispered, my heart starting to ache.
“Oh, well, she was there, but she wasn’t.” he sighed. “I didn’t know it as well as I do now. Maybe I had known, I just didn’t want to admit it or accept it. But she was absent, locked away in the bedroom days at a time. I can’t say for sure if it was pills or a needle, but I knew well enough back then that she wasn’t of much help to any of us. It was Jacob who protected us.”
“He definitely seems like the type.” I muttered, remembering the towering man, and Joseph chuckled. “So, what happened?”
Joseph clicks his tongue matter-of-factly. “It was John, actually. That’s how they found out. He went to school with bruises on him and the teacher saw. The next thing we knew…child protective services had come for us.” It’s quiet again as he pauses, and I absorb the information. Even with the sounds of the city, you can hear the water in the pool, and it’s relaxing. There’s a loud cheering from inside and Joseph decides to break the silence. “We got adopted, of course. But…well, they were worse than what we came from, and Jacob being Jacob…well, he wouldn’t ever stand for it.”
“What did he do?”
“He caught their barn on fire.” I frowned immediately, flinching away as if he had slapped me, but Joseph paid no mind, not noticing my reaction. “Then he beat them to death. And they deserved it, but the authorities didn’t see it that way. So, they took Jacob away from us. Not long after that, John was finally adopted.” Another sigh as he shifted. “And these people, swore to be good Christian people, but didn’t know the meaning of it. Swore that John was born evil, born in sin.” He looked at me with a shake of his head. “Misplaced belief breeds disaster. Always.”
The way he said it made a chill go up my spine, my body going cold with dread. “They sound insane.”
“You haven’t even heard the half of it, my dear.” Joseph clenched and unclenched his hands as he stared at them. “They beat him, manipulated him, tore him down until he was exactly what they wanted. He was a shell of himself. Made him confess to sins he had never committed and made it to where he believed he was wrong. His whole existence was nothing but sin. So, he learned how to be the perfect son. Learned how to become a chameleon of sorts, changing colors and pieces of himself for each interaction and person. Something I’m sure you can relate to?”
I shift uncomfortably under his gaze, because it’s so true. Both of us trained and taught to be what others wanted us to be, to be the perfect shining example that stood above the rest. I hated that he was right, that there were similarities between the two of us that shook me to the core, and I wanted to rip it away. To deny any of it, because I would never do what he was doing now. Never would I fall so low.
Become one of his coked-up buddies he keeps around, for all I fucking care. If you value your life, you’ll do this.
A sick feeling twists inside as Hurk Sr’s words whisper harshly in my mind. I did value my life, and I wasn’t so sure of what I would and wouldn’t do anymore. If someone had asked me a few months ago if I would stage an engagement, I would’ve laughed in their face. But yet, here I was, in a situation I had sworn I would never allow myself to get into; a situation where someone else was in control and pulling the strings. I couldn’t really say anything anymore.
“He quit for a while.” Joseph murmured. “John hasn’t…he hasn’t done something like this in a very long time. But we need the partnership, I need them in there to align with us. He knows that…and this was his way…this is my fault, and I know that. John would do anything for his family.”
“You didn’t ask him to do any of that, Joseph.” I whispered. “We make our own choices. And there’s another way, John just…doesn’t know how to apply it yet.” I don’t know why I was defending him, but I knew I spoke from experience. When you didn’t know how else to handle a situation, you always fell on bad habits. They were the most comfortable.
“I’m hoping he will get better. He has, really. But tonight has me worried.” He scoffed. “The Duncan’s did a hell of a job on him, and I’m doing what I can to break their hold. After dead for so many years, you would think their influence would’ve died with them.”
My heart stops as I look at Joseph. “What? What did you say?” He gave me a confused look, and I clarified. “The name. Who?”
“The Duncan’s. They were John’s adoptive parents. Before he changed it back, John’s last name was Duncan.” I swallow as Joseph looked away, brushing something off his suit jacket.
John Duncan.

Senior Trip [Peter Parker]
Peter Parker x plus size fem reader
Warnings: Anxiety, flying anxiety, body image issues
I just watched Far From Home (I know, super behind in the times…) but I got super inspired to do some Peter Parker writing! Sorry I’ve been gone for a while, I had some bad writer’s block.
Requests are still open!!
ALSO, let me know if I should do a sequel to this (because I totally will!)
Masterlist
Part 2
-----------------------------
I had become friends with Peter and Ned shortly after their gallivant across Europe, when Ned met Betty and Peter finally got the guts to talk to MJ. Ned and I were playing the same game in study hall one day, and we got to talking. He introduced me to Peter, who I instantly felt something for. But seeing him pine over MJ quickly squashed any and all hope I had. I became a regular face in the group,  even though I was an obvious fifth wheel, I didn’t care. I felt like I had true friends for once, something I had struggled with since I was young.
The only reason I was accepted into the same school as Ned and Peter was my love for biology. I wanted to study the animals of the world, work for scientific journals, and travel to study them. I wanted to help them and help the planet. I worked so hard to keep up at school that social hour was far from my specialty, so when Ned, Peter, MJ, and Betty came into my life, I was eternally grateful. It also didn’t help that in a school mostly made up of beautiful young people, I was bigger than your average teenage girl. I couldn’t hold a candle to MJ, with how thin and pretty she was. Betty had those sparkling eyes and perfect hair. I was blatantly the designated ugly fat friend, and that’s all I’d ever be.
We were approaching graduation, and I had a few acceptance letters from New York area colleges, all known for biology and animal study internships. I walked into lunch the day after getting my last one, and I only had lunch with Peter and Ned, so I threw them down in front of them and smiled slightly.
“You guys have to help me pick which one.” I said, sitting down. I refused to eat lunch in front of Peter. Lately, he and MJ were growing distant, and I wasn’t sure why. I tried not to butt into things that aren’t my business, and Peter knew my door was always open if he needed me.
“Not now.” Ned mumbled. I looked over at Peter, who was absentmindedly playing with his fork in his lunch. His eyes were slightly pink and puffy, and I knew something was wrong. I scooped up the letters and quickly threw them back into my bag.
“Sorry.” I quickly said, pulling out my latest book and reading it. “Uh...Ned, do you and Betty have a senior trip planned?”
“Yeah, we’re headed to Florida for a long weekend in a few weeks. We were supposed to go with Pete and MJ...but...” He dropped his voice to a whisper. “MJ got accepted to schools in California. And Peter got a job working for Stark Industries through his internship so…that’s why he’s out of it.” My face dropped into a frown knowing Peter was going to have to make that heartbreaking decision. It was like my heart broke with his, knowing my friends were sad absolutely crushed me. I looked down and played with the sleeve of my sweatshirt.
“Oh man.” I whispered. “That sucks.”
“Yeah. It does.” Peter mumbled. Ned had obviously not whispered quietly enough.
“If you need anything, Peter, please let me know.” I said, trying to smile at him. He looked up at me and then back to his mashed potatoes.
“Thanks.” He said, barely audible over the commotion of the lunch room. I looked at Ned who gave me a sad shrug. I pulled out a book and stared at it, all the while thinking of ways to subtly cheer Peter up. I felt his sadness crawl across the table, reach for me, and latch onto my body. I couldn’t imagine finally getting up the nerve to talk to someone you’ve liked for a while, only for them to run across the country within a few months. I didn’t even want to ask about working it out long distance, because I’m sure Peter had thought of that.
“Do you have a senior trip planned?” Ned tore me away from my book at the question. My eyes darted from him to Peter before I answered. Peter was unmoved.
“Nah. I can’t really afford one. I was just going to get a summer job and save up for...” I looked over at Peter, who was now looking down at his shoes. I didn’t want to mention college and make things worse.
“Why don’t you come with Betty and I to Florida? We have two extra tickets from...” Ned looked at Peter, and I could only assume Peter and MJ were supposed to go with them.
“Ned, I couldn’t possibly. I’d have no way to pay you back.” I said. Ned shrugged.
“My gram paid for the tickets for the plane as a graduation gift. The beach house belongs to my uncle. I didn’t pay for anything either.”
“Uh...well, let me ask my parents. I could probably go, I don’t see why not.”
Graduation came and went, and soon enough I was packing to head to Florida with Betty and Ned. My hands shook as I packed the last few things, realizing for the first time, Ned and Betty were going to see me in shorts and hot weather clothes. I couldn’t handle that. I immediately thought of calling Ned and backing out, but part of me did want to go. We would be staying at a beach house in the Florida Keys, and I probably wouldn’t get the opportunity to do this again. I zipped up my suitcase and my dad  drove me to the airport.
I met Ned and Betty at the front door, they both waved and smiled as I walked in.
“This is going to be such a relaxing trip.” Betty sighed, leaning onto Ned’s shoulder. I quickly felt regret surge through my veins. I was intruding on a trip that could have been just the two of them. I could tell them I was sick and wouldn’t want to ruin the trip, I could let them have a long weekend to themselves. My palms began to sweat holding my suitcase, and as I turned to look for a way out, I was met with a familiar face.
“Peter! You took long enough.” Ned shouted, waving to him as he walked through the door. I quickly turned to look at Betty, who shrugged.
“He decided last minute that he wanted to come, to take his mind off of MJ.” She whispered quickly before Peter came over. I smiled at Peter as he joined the group and we headed off to catch our flight.
“We have these four seats here.” Ned gestured to the two rows. Instantly he and Betty took the first row of seats and Peter and I took the second row.
“Do you like the window?” Peter asked. I quickly shook my head and kicked my purse under the seat in front of me.
“No way.” I said.
“Are...are you scared of flying?” He asked softly. I looked over at him, running my hand through my hair before answering with a nod. “It’ll be okay.”
“Mhmm.” I nodded before putting my head back against the seat and closing my eyes. We began to take off and I held my breath the whole time until we were steadily in the air. I hated flying. I didn’t do it often, so I hated every bump and every dip. We were halfway through our flight when I heard the captain’s voice over the intercom.
“We’re going to be experiencing some pretty rough turbulence, so everyone must stay in their seat until I turn the seat belt sign off.”
I felt the color drain from my face. I was about to die, my brain was convinced of it. I gripped my right armrest tightly, afraid to grab the left in case Peter needed it. We began to bump and shake in the turbulence and I shut my eyes tightly and tried to control my breathing, but I couldn’t help the tear that slipped out of my eye first.
“Hey...hey...” I heard Peter whispering. I opened my eyes and looked over. Peter was softly smiling until he saw how scared I was. He held up a headphone splitter and his phone. “Do you want to watch a movie with me?”
I nodded and pulled my headphones out of my purse. Peter plugged them in and just as he hit play, the plane dropped a little and I audibly gasped and grabbed both armrests. My heart was pounding and my brain was fearing the worst.
“It’s okay.” Peter said, putting his hand on top of mine on the armrest. I sighed out and looked over at him, nodding slightly.
“I hate flying.” I whispered.
“I can tell.” Peter said, rubbing his thumb over my hand. “But you’re going to be okay.”
We landed and got to our beach house with no problems. We walked through the beach house, ogling at the views and how we could see the beach from the kitchen.
“So...uh...there’s a bit of a problem.” Betty grabbed my arm and pulled me away from Peter and Ned, who were checking out the TV. “There’s only two bedrooms.”
“Uh huh...” I said slowly. “Why?”
“Well we thought it would be Peter and MJ...” She started, which shattered my heart. In our brief moment on the flight where Peter comforted me, I forgot he was still in love with MJ.
“I’ll take the couch downstairs.” I said, pulling my bag towards the stairs. “It’s fine. Let Peter have the bedroom.”
“What’s that?” Ned said, walking over and putting his arm around Betty. “Are we picking rooms? Because I want the one with the stuffed swordfish above the bed.”
“Uh well, I was just telling Betty I’ll take the couch downstairs, and then Peter can take the bedroom.” I said, picking up my bag.
“No, that’s okay, I can go downstairs.” Peter said.
“No Peter. I’m the one that’s not even supposed to be on this trip. I’ll take the couch.” I said. He frowned and nodded. I instantly felt a pang of guilt in my chest for making him think of MJ.
“Well, let’s all get changed and go to the beach!” Betty said, breaking the tension. They all scattered as I took my bag into the basement, which was still warm and totally furnished, so it felt like a bedroom. I opened my bag and instantly felt my heart speed up. I wasn’t meant to be on this trip. They were going to be so grossed out when they saw me in shorts and a tank top. They wouldn’t talk to me after this trip.
I couldn’t go to the beach. It wasn’t going to happen.
“Hey, you ready?” I heard Betty call from the top of the stairs.
“Uh...you guys...get going without me...I’m really tired from the plane. I’m going to take a quick nap and then I’ll meet you there?” I said, trying to sound convincing, and not just an anxious disaster.
“Are you sure?” She called, walking down a few steps. She looked at me, huddled up next to my suitcase, and I could tell she knew. “Are you okay?”
“I uh...yeah, I’m still just stressed from flying. It took a lot out of me.” I said, looking down into my lap.
“If you change your mind, text me, okay?” She said, a sympathetic smile on her lips. “I’ll let you know where we are.”
-Betty’s POV-
“Alright guys, she’s going to meet us there. She’s really tired.” I said, shutting the door to the basement.
“What? We just got here?” Ned said. I shot him a look to let it go, but he couldn’t pick up on it. “There’s no way she can be tired!”
“Well, she is. The flight really took it out of her.” I said, still trying to get my point across to Ned with a poisonous glare.
“She was really stressed during the flight.” Peter chimed in. Ned shrugged and threw a towel over his shoulder.
“Alright, let’s go then.”
We were at the beach for about an hour when I noticed Peter was a little off. He was playing in the sand, while Ned was swimming in the warm ocean. I walked over and sat down next to Peter.
“What’s wrong?” I asked. “Are you still upset about MJ?”
“Kind of.” He said, throwing a handful of sand at the ground.
“There’s lots of girls in New York, Peter. I know you really, really like MJ. But it just isn’t meant to be.”  I said. He sighed loudly and nodded.
“I know.” He said. “Hey, I know I was a last minute decision on the trip, but did Y/n say why she wanted to come?”
“Well, I know she’s never been to Florida before, and she really wants to spend time with us before we all go to college.” I said, kicking some sand away from my foot. Peter nodded again and looked over at me.
“You know she told me how lonely she used to get before us? How Flash and his crew picked on her to the point where she wanted to give up going to school with us just to get away from him?” Peter said.
“Yeah. She’s mentioned it to me before.” I said.
“I...I’m going to go back and check on her.” Peter said, standing up and grabbing his towel.
I smiled. Ned’s plan to get Peter’s mind off of MJ was working after all.
-Reader’s POV
I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand as I stood by the window, still dressed in my New York clothes and still too afraid to put anything else on. I let out another loud sob as it hit me how much I shouldn’t be here. I pulled out my phone and looked up flights back to New York, but they were all sold out. I sat on the couch and cried, looking out over the beach, at all of the beautiful people having fun.
“Y/n?” I heard a whisper and I jumped out of my skin and turned to see Peter standing in the doorway, shirtless with a towel in his hand. He saw that I had been crying and walked over to the couch with me.
“What’s wrong?” He said, furrowing his brow at me.
“I...I...I shouldn’t be here, Peter.” I said, finally breaking down and deciding to open up to Peter.
“What are you talking about?” He asked quietly, putting his hand on my arm. I shuddered at his touch, feeling like he was just pitying me, like everyone else.
“I don’t look like any of the people that are here. I’m not as pretty as those women on the beach, or Betty, or MJ.” I didn’t mean to let the last part slip out. I saw a flash of hurt in Peter’s eyes as I mentioned MJ, and I felt worse then I already did.
“Hey, hey, you don’t have to look like any of those girls, or Betty, or anyone else for that matter.” Peter said. “You’re great the way you are.”
“Oh Peter, you act like I haven’t heard that one before.” I said, the ugly part of my anxiety rearing it’s head. “I know what I look like. I know that I’m destined to be alone and I know my place. I shouldn’t be here. I was a mooch that tagged along hoping for something in my life to change, but it won’t.”
“Y/n...I had no idea you felt this way about yourself...” Peter looked down. “It’s...it’s...”
“It’s true.” I said. “I know you guys only let me extra wheel because you feel sorry for me.”
“I was going to say it’s heartbreaking.” Peter croaked, his eyes misty with tears. “To hear that one of my best friends won’t even go outside because she’s so afraid that the world will judge her for her looks and not even consider how good of a person she is. Not even considering that she has a heart of gold that has listened to all of my problems since I came back from Europe with another girl on my arm, and since that girl left me, she has been so supportive and open. The love for her friends is enough to fill an ocean, but she’s afraid of going to the ocean because this world and society have hurt her so much.”
“Peter...” I said. “Please don’t let me ruin your trip.”
“My trip depends on my friends having a good time. All of my friends.” He said, and without thinking, he pulled me into his chest and wrapped his arms around me. I sighed deeply at his touch, feeling the unfortunate feeling of butterflies in my stomach.
“I want you to know something.” He whispered, rubbing my back. “In the months since MJ...since she said we couldn’t do it...I, I’ve needed you. You were a ray of sunshine in my darkest days. You pulled me from what I thought was a drowning point. I thought I was lost after MJ shot me down, and you threw down a rope and I climbed out of my hopeless pit. I...I think you’re beautiful.”
I pulled away from him and looked his face up and down. I searched for a hint of a lie, but all I found was sincerity.
“You...You’re not just saying that?” I choked out. “Because I sure as hell don’t see any of that.”
“I really, really mean what I said. Can...can I show you? I saw this restaurant right next to the beach on my way back. Will you let me take you to dinner tonight? We can get something to eat and watch the sunset.” He said.
“I...yeah, sure.” I said, slightly smiling.

“Momma, can Mike buy me the pink cotton candy?” asked Everly, your three year old daughter. Her brown eyes were bright with excitement, reminding you so much of her father. “Pretty please?”
Bending down to kiss her cheek, you grinned up at your boyfriend Mike. Mike loved Everly like she were his own, and it melted your heart to know that Everly took such a liking to your boyfriend of five months.
“I’m sure Mike would love to get you the cotton candy,” you said, shooting your boyfriend a wink. You and Mike had opted to take Everly out for the day and seeing that a carnival was in town, you decided it’d be the perfect time for some family bonding.
“Come on, Mikey,” Everly said, pulling Mike’s hand in the direction of the cotton candy stand. “I want the biggest cotton candy ever!” Chuckling, you watched as a helpless Mike was dragged by an overly eager Everly, another trait she shared with her father, Tommy Lee.
When you’d met Tommy, you thought he was the perfect man. And he was, until the drugs and alcohol kicked in. You’d gotten pregnant only seven months into your relationship, and Mötley was only halfway done the tour they’d been on at the time. For the first leg of the tour, Tommy had been fine. It was when the second half started, the drinking became a huge issue, but you could tolerate the alcohol.
The drugs slithered into Tommy’s life when Everly turned two. He did his best to hid them from you, but Tommy wasn’t as clever as he thought. You’d found a small bag filled with white powder shoved inside his sock drawer, and you left him that night and stayed with your best friend, with Everly in tow.
By the time Tommy had gotten out of rehab, you had already been dating Mike. Tommy of course, refused to approve of your ‘lame’ boyfriend, as he’d say. You defended Mike religiously, but even so you had to agree that Mike was not like any of the other men you dated, especially Tommy. Tommy was wild, carefree, and fun. Mike was the polar opposite of Tommy, an engineer who enjoyed numbers and Animal Planet, with a buzz cut and thick black glasses, but he treated you well and adored your baby girl. You couldn’t ask for anything else.
Tommy of course was livid that you’d opted for joint custody, but when you reminded him that total custody was a thing (and was usually awarded to the mother) he shut up faster than he had opened his mouth. Instead of fighting, Tommy did his best to brush it off, but he hated only seeing his little girl two weekends out of four.
And sometimes he didn’t even see her that much if Crüe was busy touring. That wasn’t how her life was supposed to be, constantly traveling between Mommy and Daddy’s houses. Everly deserved a stable home, and that’s why Tommy had been so insistent that you try to work things out between the two of you romantically. In another world, maybe you would have tried. But Mike was sweet and you knew he cared for you, and you couldn’t break the poor man’s heart as easy as Tommy wanted you to.
“You know I can’t stand him around our daughter.”
Turning around, you looked straight into the brown eyes you used to be in love with and sometimes wished you still were in love with. Brushing the thought from your mind, you gave your ex-boyfriend, who was looking rather handsome, a hard look. Tommy stood with his hands in his pockets, lips in a hard thin line.
“What are you doing here, Tommy?” You asked, crossing your arms over your chest. “And you can’t stand Mike because he’s not you.”
“First, you don’t own the carnival, Y/N, and second, you’re damn fucking right,” Tommy spat, his eyes turning a darker brown. “I’m here with Vince and Skylar, my goddaughter. I planned on taking Everly next week, but apparently you and stepdad over there had other ideas.”
You could sense the hurt and anger in Tommy’s voice right away. He was never one for hiding his emotions. Looking back at Everly, you saw her sitting with Mike on a bench, peeling cotton candy and dropping it on Mike’s tongue, giggling the whole time.
“This isn’t right,” Tommy murmured, causing you to turn back toward him. His hand rested on your shoulder and you tried ignoring his lips by your ear. “It should be me, you, and our daughter. Together. You know that.”
“And it would’ve been,” your voice was hard, gently pushing Tommy’s hand. “But shit doesn’t always work out the way you plan, Tommy. We learned that the hard way when you got me pregnant.”
“I know that,” he said softly, rocking on his heels. From the way his eyes lingered on you to the nervous chewing at his bottom lip, you were fully aware that Tommy wanted to say something else. “I just wish things were different.”
You nodded in agreement. If it weren’t for the drugs you, Tommy, and Everly would be a family. There would be no Mike, and you could watch Everly feed Tommy cotton candy instead.
“I’ve been replaced.” The laugh that escaped Tommy’s lips was dull, empty, and a piece of your heart broke watching Tommy’s face fill with sorrow as he watched his daughter bond with a man that wasn’t him.
Placing a hand on his arm, your face softened. “Tommy Lee, you know damn well that isn’t true. Don’t you dare say things like that.”
“Sometimes I go months without seeing her because of the stupid fucking tours. I’m already sick of ‘em,” Tommy clicked his tongue in aggravation. “I missed her first day of preschool, I wasn’t home when she took her first steps, and I had to hear her say ‘Dada’ over the fucking phone. Now, I can’t even take her to a stupid ass carnival because some other man wants to play dad when I’m not around.”
Grabbing Tommy’s hand, you pulled him to a bench next to a hot dog stand. “Tommy, look at her,” you said, pointing over at your daughter. “That little girl absolutely loves you. She understands that we’re not together anymore, but she has not replaced you. You will always be her father. You’ll be the man taking her to her father-daughter dances at school, and you will be the one who walks her down the aisle when she gets married.” You looked for any sign of life in Tommy’s face as you continued. “She makes me tell her stories of us before bed.”
Finally, a smile crept on Tommy’s face, revealing the cheerful man you’d once grown to love. “Really?”
“Yeah. She loves hearing how Mommy and Daddy fell in love years ago,” you sighed, running your hands through your hair. Your love story used to be one of your favorites, too. “I even let her watch a few videos of you drumming on stage. She wants a drum set for Christmas because ‘I want to be like Daddy.’ Her words, Tommy.”
You and Tommy sat staring at each other for what felt like an eternity. You didn’t want Tommy feeling replaced. He was one of a kind, and despite everything he’d been through on tour, he was a damn good father. You knew he would be the minute he held Everly in his arms soon after she was born. The smile on his face and the tears in his eyes had given it away.
“Daddy!”
Both you and Tommy looked up, grinning as Everly sprinted across the grass. Just as Tommy knelt down and opened his arms, Everly flung herself into her father, wrapping her tiny arms around his neck. She was grinning from ear to ear, and you laughed as Everly gave Tommy a sticky kiss on his cheek. This little girl had always been a Daddy’s girl. No other man in her life would compare.
“Hi, Peanut,” Tommy said, kissing Everly’s nose. He and Mike exchanged a brief ‘hello’ before Tommy turned his attention back to the brown haired girl with two pink bows in her hair. “Are you having fun?”
Everly nodded excitedly. “Sure am! Can you take me on the Ferris Wheel, Daddy?”
Tommy gave you a nervous look, and you shook your head in encouragement. “Of course, Peanut. After the Ferris Wheel, I have a surprise for you. Someone would love to see you.”
“Who?” Everly’s eyes lit up.
Chuckling, Tommy hoisted the little girl in his arms, poking her nose softly. “Oh I don’t know, but I think I saw Uncle Vince and cousin Skylar over by the balloon stand.”
Clapping excitedly, Everly wiggled out of her father’s arms, tugging him toward the Ferris Wheel. Tommy let his daughter pull him toward the mini Ferris Wheel, and as he walked away he glanced at you over his shoulder. He mouthed a ‘Thank you’ before nodding his head.
You nodded back as well, the familiar sight of Tommy with Everly warming your heart. No, you weren’t together, and no telling if you would ever be together again, but you needed to have some sort of a relationship with Tommy. Because in the end, your daughter was the best thing in both of your lives, and you vowed to be civil with Tommy for the sake of your baby girl, Everly Marie Lee.

The Long Awaited Update, maybe, if anyone still reads our stuff...
So, it’s me, Abbie, who dropped the ball this time and not Kat. I promised you guys an update about why we were gone all summer and that did not happen. To explain it, completely, I might need to go back Winter break 2 years ago. It was right around the time we started this blog. Kat and I were both full time students and working to pay for food and bills. We both let our jobs know in September that we’d need winter break off to go home for the holidays as a lot of employers in college towns expect. We were both told that would not be a problem and we made plans, book flights because they’re much cheaper when booked in advance. We were set! Wrong, we were both screwed. Schedules came out for the weeks of winter break and Kat was scheduled for 2 days that first week and then scheduled for Christmas Eve, and the day after Christmas. Kat went to ask if it was a mistake and her boss told her no, that it wasn’t a mistake and they couldn’t spare her for two weeks. She explained we booked our flights in early October because we were told she’d be off. Kat explained she needed the time off to visit family and they told her they couldn’t do it. Kat told them she was already told she’d have to time off and was going home to visit family at which point they told her if she was a no call no show, that they’d have to terminate her. She broke down in tears and went back to work. Over the next couple days, she kept begging them to give her the time off. She talked to co-workers to try to get those days covered and several said they would do it. They just had to convince their asshole manager.
Just as Kat was seemingly ready to get her situation finished, mine popped up. My schedule had me scheduled for a full 40 hours for both weeks. I was beyond shocked because I never worked over 32 hours and usually only 28 hours. I went to ask why I was scheduled for a full 40 hours and the bitch told me “Oh, you only work a short schedule because you’re a student, and since school is out for these two weeks, we had some of you kids want to go home to family for the holidays and we need you to cover some of those shifts since classes are out.” I threw my schedule down on the desk and said “Yeah, some kids wanted to go home for the holidays, I was one of them, I put in for this in September and you said it was approved, what the fuck happened?” and she just blankly stared at me. I asked when some of the other put in for the break and she was like last month, and proceeded to tell me I should ask for time off 3 weeks in advance, I pointed out I asked 3 months in advance. She gave me a shitty grin and a chuckle and told me to get back to work. I refused and told her we had flights booked for over two months and they were non-refundable (not sure if they were or not, just said that to hopefully change her mind) and she told me, I hope you didn’t pay a lot, it would suck to lose all that money for something you can’t use. I told her “I’m not going to lose money, I’ll go to the labor board or small claims court since these were booked AFTER you approved my time off.” She told me to stop being dramatic. I explained I would be going home for the holidays one way or another. After arguing with both our respective bosses, we were finally told we’d get the time off. We thought it was all settled. We left, we had a great holiday, we came back to school. We stopped by both of our places of employment to get our schedules and Kat was told she’d been replaced. She came out in tears and I comforted her and explained we’d get her another job. She calmed down and we drive to my shithole job and I get my schedule and I’m scheduled for 3 hours one day, 5 hours another and only have 5 total days scheduled in two weeks. 16 hours for 2 weeks. I raised hell and it did me no good.
Kat started her job search and I worked my few hours while filing out applications Kat brought home for me since I was looking for a new job too. Our parents knew what went on just before break and they weren’t surprised when we had to call them for extra money for bills and rent. As some of you know, My mother is an attorney and my Stepdad(Now Dad, he officially adopted me Aug. 2018) owns a small chain of like 30 or so sporting goods stores in my home state. Kat Parents own a huge Horse farm/Ranch made up of three original farms combined to make one large one. Our families are doing nicely. By this time, almost a year into our relationship, our parents were already friends and talking on a regular basis through texts, Email, and phone calls, I figure initiated by my slightly over protective mother because she feels responsible for my abuse at the hands of my biological father. Anyway, they are all friends and talk often. Mom told me to get a list of our rent and average monthly bills together and call her tomorrow. And in the meantime, Kat’s Parents put money in her account and mine did the same. I called mom with the rent and average bills and I expected her to be putting a budget or something together because “moms love that shit” right? We talked for a bit and then she said she had some phone calls to make.
She called back a couple hours later and she told me to put it on speaker phone and I heard her asking “Katherine, are you guys there?” and we heard Kat’s parents chime in and say “yes, we’re here.” We all said hi and Kat and I were looking at each other like “W.T.F.?” Mom started by telling me I needed to go quit my job immediately after the phone call, Kat’s mom told Kat to tear up any applications she had filled out and to never mind finding a new job. Again, Kat and I looked at each other like “W.T.F.?” Mom and Katherine(Kat’s mom) both started telling us how they couldn’t believe how much trouble we had just trying to come home for the holidays and how upset they were when, at first, they didn’t think they’d get to see their girls for the holidays. They were glad when we finally got to come home but they expected we’d face some kind of retaliation for taking the time off. They were a little shocked at what actually happened, they thought it would be the opposite and we’d get the hours dogpiled on us instead, causing our schoolwork to take a backseat. They both wondered that if we got new jobs, would we get too many hours to handle both work and schoolwork? Or would we go through the same trouble next holiday season? Would we get to enjoy summer break? At which point they collectively decided to pay our bills, our rent, our food, and we’d get a small bump in our monthly allowances. My allowance was guilt money from Mom anyway. Most of it goes into a saving account anyway, I also get money from stud fee’s from my German Shepherd Franklin. Usually around $500 a month sometime more (if he gets lucky, if you know what I mean? : ) Our parents were paying for school anyway, our bills did not add that much more in comparison.  We just had stipulations. Every break, we have to go home to visit at least for a week unless we’re granted a reprieve. This only applies to Thanksgiving, Winter, and Summer breaks. All other breaks are short and we’re free to do with as we please. Because of comments I made to my mother about how much cam girls make online and how I bet Kat and I would make bank doing the cam girl thing, we were told “Absolutely no porn!” If they ever found a single picture of either of us online, a nipple, a lip, a butthole, our agreement would be null and void and we’d have to get jobs and all money would be pulled except for tuition, of course. (Way to go Mom, take all the fun stuff away and leave us with Work and School only! LOL) Anyway, we agreed, we wouldn’t do Porn. We also have to keep our grades up, which wouldn’t be hard since we wouldn’t have to worry about reading chapters on breaks at work, or getting papers written before our shifts. Everything seemed great. We agreed. Without having to work a part time job after class, I used the free time in the evening to pick up a few more classes each semester and have since taken classes from (8am to 7:30pm) 3 days a week and (8am to 7pm) 2 days a week, assuming the classes are offered, and luckily they have been. Those extra classes allowed me to double major and earn two bachelor degree’s this past spring, when I was only on track for one degree and only a few classes short of my second which I had planned on earning the end of this current semester, but my schedule worked out and the classes were offered during my new found free time.
Skip ahead to December of 2018 and you have stories of my Birthday Party, our Holiday party, and that’s where we left off. Through spring semester, things got hectic again. I loaded my schedule to get as many classes done as I can and with any luck, I can graduate early.
Our lives were also changed last year when we went home for winter break and I can’t wait for that chapter to start. Some of you know we’re both engaged with full blessings from both my family and hers, and we’re planning on getting married in June. One year of dating, and then 2 years and 3 months of engagement until the wedding. We’re still as happy now as we were on day one, if not happier. Kat’s mom corners us every chance she gets with wedding planning. We’ve already decided on getting married by our favorite lake on their farm, but the details are what Momma Katherine loves to obsess over and I love her for it. Ok, on to the life changer. I wrote about Kat handling the purchase of the farm northern property line of her parents property. The days leading up to arriving back home for winter break were filled with Exams and Kat making contract changes with my mother, the attorneys advice. She and Kat talked as much the week before we went home than she and I since summer break all combined. Mom helped Kat make changes and Kat emailed it to her parents attorney to make the changes official. Kats parents had been telling us they were going to take us out to celebrate when we got home and were just told we were celebrating the new addition to the company and the plans for that part of the property. Ok, well, the life changer will not be in this quick little update since the original draft of this was 28 pages long and over 22,000 words. It kind of bled into everything above then into Winter break 2018/2019. I found my Word document that I journaled in during break, just as I do with stuff I think I will write about later. So, we have this update that will hopefully explain a few things about us, and I will follow that up with the posts about last year’s winter break. I have my word files from the spring and summer too so those will be written up when I get time. For now, here is a chance to learn a little more about us. If you’re still around reading our ramblings, thank you for your patience, if you’re new, enjoy what’s been posted already and please, do not hold us to a schedule. We don’t mean to be liars by saying we’ll be posting soon and not posting for months, it’s just that life and schoolwork take precedence over Tumblr posting. I hope you understand. -Abbie

Absolutely Smitten
Dang. I really suck at keeping my word, don’t I? Whelp, for those who care, it’s here now! This is the first of I don’t know how many parts of “Six Foot Seven”, a new series/book thing I’ve been working on lately, requested by @i-cant-reach-im-too-short! The entirety of the series will be based on her real-life love story, as well as a playlist she gave me. First song was Absolutely Smitten by Dodie Clark. Hope you all enjoy! :)
Tumblr media
“Teddy, come eat!” I call out from the kitchen, rattling his food around the large metal bowl. I wait a few minutes before yelling out his name again. “Teddy! Teddy Bear! C’mon! I have to leave soon and you need to eat.” Still no response.
And so begins my daily game of “Find the Giant Dog Hiding in my Tiny Apartment and Hope He Didn’t Run Off and Start the Zombie Apocalypse Without Me”. Such a great way to start my day…
I search behind couches and loveseats, inside closets and my bathroom only to find absolutely nothing. “Where, oh where has my Teddy gone, oh where, oh where could he be,” I sing softly under my breath, “In the closet he’s not, with me he’s… Also not, oh where, oh where could he be.” I continue with my non-rhyming song, raising my volume a little as I get closer and closer to my bedroom, the only other place he could be hiding.
When I finally reach the doorway, I hear a playful bark come out from beneath my bed. I lower myself down to my knees, pull up the flashlight on my phone, and put my right cheek against the carpet. And, sure enough, I’m staring into the eyes of my slightly-obnoxious-but-still-very-lovable German Shepard. Who also just so happens to be stuck underneath the bed I just got.
How he got there is beyond me and getting him out is going to be a serious victory on my end. As in, the kind of victory that deserves a pint and a half of double chocolate chip ice cream and a box of Cheez-Its after work. I try coaxing him out, seeing if he can squeeze himself just enough to remove himself from the tight spot. I bribe him with treats and squeaky toys, but he doesn’t move a muscle. So, I move on to what I knew was, ultimately, inevitable and would no doubt break all of my limbs off of my body.
Have you ever seen a 5’2 Asian girl trying to lift up a Queen size metal bed frame (with the mattress on top of it because she had just woken up half an hour ago and was still extremely tired, so she wasn’t smart enough to take it off) at least a foot off the ground completely and utterly by herself? I haven’t, but God damn it must be hilarious to look at. Actually doing it, though? Terrible. Absolutely horrid. The worst thing I’ve ever done in my 22 years of living. I mean, seriously. What is this thing made out of? Steel with a brick-filled mattress? Ridiculousness, I tell you!
Twenty minutes later, Teddy is roaming free around our brand new home while I’m lying on my bedroom floor exhausted and trying to find a will to live, which immediately comes with an alarm going off on my phone. Who would’ve thought I’d be so ecstatic to leave the comfort of my apartment for an entire day of work behind a desk only running on four hours of sleep. I force myself up and attempt to wipe as much dog hair off of my once clean clothes, abandoning hope soon after---there’s just no escaping it.
Collecting my things, I make my way toward the door, glancing quickly at the clock on my stove. Right on time, I think to myself. Waiting for the elevator was maddening. Come on...
I mash the button impatiently, muttering curse words under my breath in frustration. I do the same when the doors finally slide open, revealing a small family of three with a tiny puppy on a leash. The slow background music only fueled my anxiety.
Before the doors are even wide enough to accommodate an entire person, I slip through the tiny gap and race outside. I flatten my hair and my eyes immediately dart to the left, finding exactly what---or, more specifically, who---I was looking for walking toward me.
“Holy shit,” I murmur softly. How is it possible for one person to look so amazing just walking down the street? I soon realize I’m staring like a literal stalker, so before I’m caught, I turn and start walking swiftly in the same direction he’s going.
“Megan!” I hear a familiar, deep voice call from behind me, “Wait up!”
“Not a chance! I’d say you’ve got long enough legs to catch up to me,” I respond, an air of fake confidence in my voice. I slow down only slightly, despite my original statement, and, sure enough, Owen manages to reach me in a few long strides.
“You’re difficult, you know that?” he laughs softly. I pray that no one saw my insides turn into literal jelly. What am I even supposed to do? My legs keep moving, but my mind is such a jumbled mush that it can’t comprehend anything around me. Which shouldn’t be happening. I’m a strong, independent woman---I don’t need him telling me if I’m pretty or not. I don’t.
So, as we walk, I begin concentrating on not concentrating on him. I quickly find that doing so is no use to me and caused me to not hear a single word Owen just spoke.
“You still there, shorty?” he teases, poking the top of my head.
“Hmm? Oh, yeah! Sorry. Just a little out of it, I guess.” Which was true, to be fair---I just decided it would be better to give him only half of the truth, for my heart’s sake. “What’d you say?”
Owen’s shoulder bumps into mine slightly, “I asked if you were eating in the office today. Thought I’d join you, but it looks as though you’re empty-handed.”
I stop in my tracks as he finishes speaking. “Idiot. Idiot, idiot, idiot,” I whisper to myself, hoping he doesn’t hear me. Because my luck is shit today, he does, and he seems to believe I was talking to him.
“Excuse me?” Owen laughs nervously, surprised by my comment.
“No!” I exclaim a little too loudly, “Not you! I was talking to myself. Didn’t realize it until you mentioned it, but I forgot my food at home; it’s been a crazy morning, so I didn’t really think about grabbing to before I left.”
“What happened?”
“Oh, nothing important, really. Just stuff with my dog…” I wanted to add ‘and you’, but it seems a bit… Forward. Creepy. Stalker-ish. Take your pick. “Made some grilled chicken, noodles, and asparagus last night, too. Looks like it’s the vending machine for me today! Yay.”
“I mean, you don’t have to…” Owen looks away slightly as his sentence trails off.
I let out a bitter laugh. “Unless you’re suggesting that I turn back and risk being late just for a bag of mediocre food, I’m afraid I do.”
“Fair point, but no. ‘Tis not what I mean by that, miss,” he taunts, putting on one of the worst fake British accents I’ve ever heard. It’s something he does often. Why? No clue---not even an inkling of an idea, but it makes my heart melt every time.
“Then what do you have in mind?”
“We could always go out to lunch. There’s this cafe-diner-thing a block or two down from the office that serve the best grilled cheese known to man. If you haven’t tried don’t think I won’t drag you there myself,” Owen laughs. I can feel my eyes light up at the prospect of that. “It can be a group thing or something.”
My shoulders deflate just a tiny bit. I knew it wasn’t going to be a date---I’m not that stupid, but I hoped it could at least be just the two of us. It’s okay, I think to myself, taking in a deep breath, It doesn’t matter. We’re just friends. I force a smile before agreeing. “Oh, yeah. Totally! Sounds great. I can see if Laura and Chelsea want to come.”
We’d finally reached our destination when the conversation began and are now parting ways as it ends. “Awesome! See you then?”
“Definitely,” I say softly. Despite my disappointment, I’m able to produce a small---but very genuine---smile.
I’m practically floating as I make my way to my tiny desk and collapse onto my rolling chair. Slumped completely down (in a way that is terrible for my back), I let out a startled screech as a voice, seemingly coming from nowhere, scares me senseless.
“You’re late,” Chelsea teases in a sing-song tone from above me.
“...No I’m not.” I point at the large clock across the room.
“How…” she stumbles over words, “How do you know I didn’t come in early and change the time on all of the clocks because... Pranks?”
“Chels, you’re still wearing your coat.”
“It’s cold.”
“How about the fact that, one, your coffee is still steaming and you refuse to drink the tar that they have here. Two, you don’t wake up any earlier than you absolutely have to because you’re the definition of a night owl. Or, and I’d say this is my most convincing argument, three, you just don’t care enough to do that.” I sit up as I rest my case and begin pulling out my things for the day.
“You’re no fun,” Chelsea pouts, lowering herself behind the cork board wall that separates us.
Ignoring her very hurtful words, I continue the conversation as though nothing happened, “Has Laura come in yet?”
She scoots her chair over to your side as she answers, “I don’t think so. Or if she has I haven’t seen her. Why?”
I let out a groan and drop my head onto my desk, smashing the keys on my laptop. “Great. I needed her to help me make some copies because I have to meet with some clients later today and I have no clue how to work that… Thing.”
Chelsea opens her mouth, prepared to offer help, but I cut her off before she can, “Don’t. I love you, but she’s the only one who can tame the beast. I swear that if anyone looked at it the wrong way it would set the entire building on fire. Especially if it were either of us.”
“That’s fair,” she relinquishes. Suddenly, a tornado in human form tears through the office dropping a pile of things on Laura’s desk and races into a conference room, all in a matter of .04357 milliseconds.
“She’s here,” I chuckle slightly.
Twenty minutes later, Laura races back into the room and all but sprints to her desk. Thinking she might actually be done in there, I try to ask for her help. And, before I’m ever able to finish saying her name, she explains, “Can’t talk right now. Still doing the presentation; just forget some papers.”
Not long after that, Laura is finally free and snatches my papers from my desk, taking them to that dreaded machine and returning with 15 more than I need.
“Sorry about the extras,” she sighs as she drops them in my lap, “There was an error with the copier, but at least you have those if you need them.”
“Thank you!” I exclaim in a hushed voice, “You are a life saver, I swear!”
“Are you just now figuring that out?” Laura laughs.
I stick my tongue out at her before continuing my work.
I later feel a light tap on my shoulder. Turning around, I find Owen standing there, a large stack of papers in his hand. “Hey, what’s up?”
“I was just on my way to steal Anthony’s copier, but I thought I’d let you know that James, Benny, and the others can’t make it to lunch. Any luck with you?
Before I can even consider speaking, Laura immediately turned the focus of the conversation to Anthony. “Wait. Wait just a second. Anthony’s been hiding a perfectly working copier from us?!”
“Guess so.” Owen gives a small shrug.
“What the hell!” she exclaims angrily.
To avoid the situation from escalating, I direct us back to our original topic. “I completely forgot to ask about lunch. Umm… Chels, Laura, either of you doing anything for lunch? I forgot my food this morning, so we thought it’d be a fun idea to get a little group together to go out.” My friends share a conspiratorial look when I’m finished.
Chelsea’s the first to respond. “I really wish I could, but,” she pauses, “I have to run home and feed Pepper. Planned on just stopping by McDonald’s or something on my way back.”
“Neither can I,” Laura sighs with an ingenuine sadness in her voice, “Thomas wanted to take me out at that new sushi place across town. Sorry. Hope you guys have fun.”
A smile twitching on his lips, Owen turns back to me. “Just the two of us, then.”
“Yep,” I mumble quietly, my face growing warmer by the second.
“See you in a bit?”
“Yep,” I repeat myself. His smile was now a grin as he left. Once he’s gone, I snap my eyes back to the two girls, glaring.
“What the fuck was that about?! First of all, you,” I point at Chelsea’s floating head, “Don’t a cat. Or a dog. Or any kind of pet! As for you, Laura. Don’t think I don’t know that Thomas won’t be home for another week. That’s all you’ve been talking about since he left!”
“It’s a week and three days,” she corrects me.
“Exactly my point!”
“Sorry, but we had to!” Chelsea cuts in, “You’ve had one of Cupid’s little arrows stuck in your ass since you started working here two years ago!”
“Not to mention the fact that this is probably the happiest we’ve seen you since your sister made you move out all because what’s-his-name told her to,” Laura adds.
I sigh, sinking into my chair for the second time today. “I know you guys are just trying to be nice. And, you’re right; I have been. He just makes me feel all kinds of weird inside. It’s like I can’t control anything when I’m around him, but that doesn’t mean I need your help with him.”
Laura scoffs and Chelsea rolls her eyes at my obvious lie. “Okay. Fine, I do. But don’t do it so obviously next time!”
My personal matchmakers lower themselves back down and I spin back to my computer. Just another hour to go…
                                                   🔹🔹🔹🔹
Lunch seemed to fly by quickly. As we waited on our food, conversations were had about simple, silly things like our favorite color, or how we drink our coffee. Others were about how work had been going and what movies we’d watched recently.
“Okay...” he pondered as he took a sip of his sweet tea, “What’s your favorite scary movie?” Shocked by the question, I couldn’t come up with an answer, so I gave him the most definite one that I could. Kind of.
“Probably anything but the Chuckie movies,” I laughed.
The moment that sentence left my mouth, he immediately corrected me. “It’s Child’s Play, you know?”
“What?”
“The movies.”
“Whatever it’s called, it scarred me for life, and I want absolutely nothing to do with it.” I crossed my arms and shuddered at the thought of even possibly watching it again. I knew it was a terrible movie, but that didn’t change anything.
The stroll back was uneventful, but peaceful. And, now, as we wait out the last couple minutes before we had to return to our respective desks, Owen and I have found ourselves walking slowly back to mine, trying to make our time together stretch as long as possible.
Suddenly, Owen grabs my arm gently, pulling me to a stop just a few feet short of my destination, and leans in. My breaths shorten and my body goes frigid as he does so.
His lips brush against my ear as he says softly, “Please don’t think I’m weird for doing this, but Laura and Chelsea have been eavesdropping since we were within listening distance. Anyway, I was wondering if you’d maybe like to go out to dinner tonight? Or this weekend? Or just, at any point in time that would conveniently work for you?”
I let out a chuckle---no, a giggle---at his awkwardness, but then I’m immediately hit by butterflies flooding my stomach as I take in his words. Once I finally come to my senses, my head is frantically bobbing up in down in complete and utter agreement.
After we shared out little… Moment, I make my way to my desk. At this point, I’m not even trying to hide the giant grin on my face. Or my blushing cheeks. Or the fact that my heart is thudding in my chest with pure excitement and joy.
Chelsea and Laura don’t bother pretending that they didn’t see what just happened, and they were sure to let me know about that.
“Did you see the way he was looking at you?” Laura gushes, “And that smile?! What’d he say?”
“What are you even talking about? It was nothing,” I roll my eyes at the rambunctious, gossip-hungry pair, but tell them anyway. “He just asked if I wanted to go out for dinner sometime.”
“Nothing?” Chelsea practically yells, “Are you kidding? There’s no way he doesn’t like you!”
I roll my eyes yet again, knowing not to get my hopes up, but I can’t help but wonder. I’d like to believe I’m not completely clueless; it’s obvious he just asked me on a date, but will it actually go anywhere?
The days that followed were spent trying to coordinate Owen and I’s schedules on the way to work, and deciding where we could go. We also found ourselves around each other outside of work more than usual as we waited for the day to come.
One more week… That’s all I’ve gotta do; make it one more week and I’ll know for sure if this will work out.

Boyfriend!I.N (Jeongin)
MASTERLIST
WOOT WOOT
Little Jeongin!
This is gonna be so damn fluffy watch out
Here we go!!!
Tumblr media
Ok so Jeongin is shy at the best of times
So God help this poor child while he has a crush on you
He won’t even be able to talk to you properly
Most likely runs away whenever he gets embarrassed
Which is very often
Just
Can’t function
If one of the members even try the subject of his crush on you when you’re in the room
He lets instinct take over
And he dolphin screams to distract everyone
As people look in his direction
Because he is hella loud
He’ll scream again and die on the inside
Why can’t I think straight with y/nnnnn
He’d be so frustrated with himself
He’ll probably mentally slap himself every other second when he talks to you
Why did you say that? What is y/n gonna think of you?! IDIOT
I highly doubt he’d confess to you himself
At least in person
One of the members probably told you
So you went to see him
And scared the bejesus out of him when you asked if it was true
But he eventually nodded and confessed and VERY quietly asked you out this baby my God save him
To which you OBVIOUSLY said yes
And he probably jumped around happily to your response
Tried to stay cool, because he is Mature™
But as soon as you were not around he’d scream with happiness and run around because he is a ball of energy and he’s gonna explode
He’s whipped, your grace
Tumblr media
Dates with Jeongin
Is it really such a mystery?
So so SO soft
His first date with you was going to a carnival
Because he made it his new goal in life to win you a stuffed toy
And win your heart forever
Little did he know that had already happened
Got really grouchy when he didn’t win anything
But immediately felt better when you both had something to eat who doesn’t feel better with food?
Forgot how to human when the date came to an end
And you kissed him on the cheek
Half as a joke, he collapsed onto the ground in a heap of giggles not really a joke it was genuine
He was, at that moment, the happiest boy to walk the planet
Tumblr media
You can probably guess that this kid is too shy for PDA
But he’s all for hand holding wherever you two go
He really loves to swing your arms back and forth like children cause that’s what you are
Sometimes will peck your cheek if he’s feeling bold
If you initiate skinship out and about, he’s gonna turn a dark shade of red
But will hold in his squeal thank goodness
If the members tease him for being shy
Because where’s the lie
He’ll greet you and become insanely clingy
If you ask him why he won’t tell you
“I just really really really wanted to hug you”
“Jeongin you’ve been clinging onto me for 10 minutes, are you okay? And what if the boys tease you”
“They won’t I’m proving a point”
“Say what?!”
Tumblr media
First kiss.
You’d think it’d be you who would have to make the first move right?
Wrong.
So freaking wrong
Because realise: once he makes his mind up about something, Jeongin carries his decision through to the end
And he decided to make a certain evening walk in the park very special
You were walking around, and it had gotten dark, only a few street lamps lit your way
You were both talking about absolute nonsense, laughing at each others jokes etc
And then he suddenly became very serious
“Can I ask you a favour? It’s really important to me…”
You got kinda nervous, because when was the last time Jeongin managed to keep a strait face like that?
From his pocket he pulled out a chain bracelet, with a pretty but subtle pattern on it. “Can you wear this? For me? And whenever you’re sad, or scared, look at it and think of me, and I can protect you”.
You were absolutely dumbstruck, so you just quietly let him out the bracelet on
You were about to cry as well
He showed you a second one which he had on his own wrist. “I want this to be something special between us”
And then he siezes the moment
And connects his lips with yours
Very gently
He kisses you so delicately, like you’re made of ice, about to break
When you part, he smiles softly
And starts walking again, calmly
Making you stand there confused af
Like where tf is shy Jeongin? Who is this?
Spoiler alert, it’s I.N, not soft Jeongin
Tumblr media
Oh lord prepare yourself before meeting the rest of SKZ
Physically and mentally
Knowing them they’ll probably try to lift you up and get you to crowd surf
While still teasing the Maknae
They’ll be so protective of you, just like with Jeongin
You have become family, don’t doubt that for half a second
Tumblr media
You are also now in charge of being the mood lifter for Jeongin
And his reassurance
Especially if he’s sick
Because he gets really tired whenever he so much as catches a cold, because he refuses to stop working and rest common sense who?
And when he’s tired, he thinks way more negatively
You were once alone with him in the practice room, and he was trying to improve a few moves to a really difficult choreography
For a while he kept smiling like the child he is, staying positive
But after trying over and over, having to catch his breath from fatigue, having trouble breathing from a blocked nose, he still couldn’t get the moves right
And out of pure exhaustion and frustration, he burst into tears no judging I’ve had this it’s painful
You immediately went over and hugged him tightly, reassuring him and calming him down
You both sat together on the floor, until he wasn’t upset anymore, but you still refused to let him practice after that
You took him home and looked after him until he passed out that night
The members were confused af as well
“What’s wrong with Jeongin?”, asked Chan, being his usual protective-leader self
You replied simply because you didn’t want to upset the other boys. “He got frustrated at the dance he’s learning, and was exhausting himself, so I dragged him home to sleep...”
They were all really grateful the you were looking after Jeongin so well, and their love for you with the Maknae you only grew
Tumblr media
Now this boy is not at all afraid of speaking his mind
So you two basically leave everything out in the open
No secrets
If one of you is pissed at the other, you will freaking say that you’re pissed at them
You don’t hold back
So then you can both talk rather freely about why you might be pissed
Basically what I’m saying is that fights are super rare
Because they don’t even get a chance to start when you two are so open with each other
So at most you bicker over food
But there are times
Like I said, insanely rarely
Jeongin doesn’t tell you how much he’s struggling
He doesn’t want to seem like he’s complaining too much so he stays quiet about his worries about being an idol
It’s a bit like his situation during The 9th: he doesn’t want to burden anyone about feeling down, so he keeps a bright smile on his face
You kinda sense that there’s something up, but he convinces you for a long time that he is totally fine
But when it becomes too much
Being tired, frustrated, stressed and worked to the bone, and he still hasn’t said anything to anyone
He’ll break and yell at you over something not even worth yelling about
It’ll shock you so much that you’ll flinch away from him
He won’t just yell at you
He’ll yell about how tired he is, about how unfair he thinks it is that he can’t learn a dance as quickly as anyone else
He’ll yell about everything and nothing
You understand quickly that he’s letting of steam, getting it all off his chest
So once he’s quiet again, breathing heavily, crying silently
You’ll hug him gently, and reassure him that you’re there no matter what and that he can ramble and complain all he wants with you
NO MORE ANGST IM OUTTA HERE
Tumblr media
He tries to force you to watch Mukbang, until you threaten him that you’ll secretly feed him black beans
You both love blasting Bruno Mars in the dorms, driving SKZ up the wall as you sing at the top of your lungs
He’ll try to teach to sing trot like him
But you both know that you’ll never be as good at singing it as him
He loves texting you whenever he has a spare half-second
He always gets in trouble with the other members because as soon they stop what they're doing, he's off to get his phone
“Where did Jeongin go”, asked Woojin. “He was here a second ago...”
Chan sighed. “I can take a guess. JEONGIN PUT THAT DAMN PHONE DOWN!”
He uses his Maknae Influence™ to get our of trouble lol
You both like to try and cook together
Doesn't really work
You usually end up making a mess
Or if you’re baking something
Like cookies
You'll end up eating all the batter before it even reaches the oven
Stray Kids will be deprived of cookies RIP
Tumblr media
When you suggest him meeting your family
He gets super nervous
But refuses to show it
You'll kind of pick up on his attitude
The way he answers questions on the matter so directly and seriously
But you're too kind and high-key impressed to point it out
But when he does meet your fam he's super smiley and actually seems genuinely comfortable
Tumblr media
You on the other hand
Get hella stressed when you're supposed to meet his parents
Will they approve?
Will his brothers like you?
As soon as you voice your concerns to Jeongin
He hugs you, reassuring you that they'll all adore you
He couldn't have been more right
His parents are so so sweet and love you from the word go
Both his brothers love you just as much
Especially his younger brother, who just idolises you
It’s so cute
You immediately exchange contacts and stay in touch
Jeongin ended up making a group chat with you and his bros because he was so excited that you got on so well
Tumblr media
His favourite thing to do in the evening with you is just watch a random show
From a K-Drama to a weird comedy neither of had ever seen
He just likes relaxing with you, usually with your legs draped over his lap
Probably screamed the first time you walked over wearing one of his jumpers
“ISN'T THAT MINE?”
“Oh, sorry I'll go put it back...”
“DON'T YOU EVEN DARE I LOVE IT”
Low-key snuck his hoodies into your closet just so he could see you wear them
But as soon as you brought it up
He'd refuse to give any answer on the matter
“What are you talking about? You must have stolen them yourself, thief”.
“Alright, I'll give them back, then”.
“No no, you stole them, so you must keep them”
“... Right”
Tumblr media
The first time he said 'I love you’ resembled your first kiss
He had thought about it and planned it out
The plan didn't really work
He'd meant to cook something for you
And watch your favourite movie
And surprise you by just saying ‘I love you’ casually
But he messed up dinner
Accidentally spilled too much salt into the dish
So instead ordered takeout from your favourite place
Then
Just because the universe was against him, for some unknown reason, the movie wouldn't work
So you ended up watching something else
And he was about to give up and plan for another day
But it just kinda slipped out?
“I'm sorry I couldn't make this a perfect night”, he said, dejected. “I wish I could just... easily show you how much I love you...”
Sort of panicked after he said it
He started stuttering while trying to explain himself
Until you kissed him to shut him up
Telling him that you loved him too
And that's how he had a happiness heart attack
Tumblr media
This bean will go public after a couple of years
He posted a photo of you smiling brightly in a cafe
With a simple caption: 'Love you so much’
Now naturally the internet is gonna die because hello?
Little baby Jeongin is dating?!
But after a few hours of commotion there's gonna be something unexpected
People will recognise you
From clips in SK TALKER
They'd seen the two of you
Just barely within the view of the camera
Messing around and playing a bunch of games to pass the time
Some had naturally insisted that you two were dating
But you were mostly just written off as Jeongin’s best friend who had come to see him a few times backstage
But now that he had officially announced your relationship
There were A LOT of people saying 'I told you so’ on the internet
Whoops
Low-key, kpop fandoms area group of mini Sherlock Holmes’
Tumblr media
He becomes so happy at the very mention of your name
Low-key hopes in every convo that someone will bring you up
Just so that he can talk about you nonstop
He talks a lot about you
SKZ always get a real earful
Especially when they’re away
He'll never stop talking about you which pisses pretty much everyone off
His coping mechanism for being away from you is just to recap a bunch of his favourite moments with you
So naturally anyone within earshot of him will hear a bunch of cute stories about you two
Right up until the moment he sees you again
Thank heavens the rest of SKZ will say as they watch the Maknae crush you in a hug, giggling excitedly
Tumblr media
All in all, you two have a soft af relationship
With lots of giggles, cuddles surprisingly, and a lot of love
Can I please just get a Jeongin??
Tumblr media
There we go! That concludes my soft-ass day!
Now, I’m going away on holiday (sooner than I thought I would), but that’s not gonna stop me from writing! There’ll just be a few posts that won’t be on the Masterlist for a while. But as soon as I get access to any computer, I’ll update the Masterlist :)

Hello, Hello! So, it’s been a bit since I took the time to blog. Kassie keeps me pretty busy from day to day, especially with Mike working two jobs. But guess what, after a year and 8 months of hustling Mike is finally able to be home with us in the evenings! For awhile he was working seven days and over 70 hours a week with almost zero complaints. He came home from one job, rushed off the second, came home well past his bed time and still made sure to squeeze in time with his little girl. He is seriously, above and beyond an amazing father. But, now the rushing in and out comes to an end. We received our final adoption invoice last month and were able to pay it off the next day! I felt that since so many people were involved with our adoption journey it was best to share our total cost and how we got to that number. I will try to be brief in the only way I know, which is to not to. (Tow Mater? Cars? Anyone?)
Here it is: WAIT! Let me back up!
  WE FINALIZED OUR ADOPTION!!!!!!
I was sitting in a movie theater beside my cousin, David watching A Quiet Place when I got the email. I am generally not one of those jerks who checks their phone during a movie but, I knew that on this day a judge would be deciding our fate with Kassie’s biological father. I should have been enjoying the two hour mommy break and cringing at the monsters that hunt noise but instead, I was spaced out focused on my thigh where my phone was sitting silently. When I felt the buzz I grabbed my phone and with the screen light turned all the way down read the words ” Biological Father has had rights revoked today. We can finalize!” Of all the movies I chose to loudly sob in, why did it have to be one that’s main theme is silence? I remember my cousin leaning over to ask if I was okay and I just whispered “She’s ours” and for the rest of the movie I just keep saying to myself “She’s ours” in disbelief.
Finally Forever Family May 18th, 2018!
If you don’t know me personally you may not understand that I am a crier. I’m a sentimental and angry crier. I don’t cry over sadness like I do over happiness (and at times, madness.) Well, this was the happiest day of my life. The judge said “Are you ready? Raise your right hands.” and I lost it. Shortly after, Mike did too. I love him so much for not being afraid to cry in public.
We found the perfect little shelter at the perfect little park but it only came with a 40 person limit. I cried about that. Narrowing it down from the few hundred people who joined us on our journey was not fun for us at all. But, we did our best and hopefully no one was hurt along the way.
Tumblr media
The turnout was wonderful as well as the cake and cupcakes by Aunt Brandy. Bampaw and Bammaw surprised us with a big star cut out of a sheet for all of our friends and family to encircle for a photo shot on my Dad’s new drone. It was a wonderful way to celebrate such a long awaited end to our journey and allow for our brand new journey to begin.
Okay, here it is! Drumroll please…
Tumblr media
$8,280.22!!!!
What? How is that even possible? Every website. Every agency. Every person. They all said $25,000-$55,000 in our state so how did we get away with $8,280.22 for our entire adoption? Well, there are several reasons that led to this for us and they are NOT as uncommon as you (I’m talking to you waiting adoptive parents) are told.
1: The stars aligned. (They can for you too, waiting parents!)
2: Bio Mom refused counseling. She was very confident and happy with her decision.
3: Bio Mom refused an attorney.
4: Bio Mom had her own insurance.
5: Bio Mom did not request any financial assistance other than $50 in gas to drive from her home to our city for TPR (Termination of Parental Rights).
6: Our Attorney was AMAZING! He is a well known Adoption Attorney in OK and he is well recognized nationally as well. He and his wife run their adoption agency which began after they adopted their daughters in the 80’s. They are hugely responsible with changing laws and adoption practices in Oklahoma. He will absolutely not take a dime from his clients until shortly before baby is due, or in our case the day baby is born. We handed him $3500. He and his wife Linda met us at the hospital with all of the paperwork ready to be signed. They seriously made this process so easy which would have been a hundred times easier had I not tried to control everything. The day they came to the hospital our attorney had to get right in my view and say “You are Mommy now. That is the number one job for you. We will be the attorneys. You just go home and be a regular Mommy now. Trust us.” I didn’t feel like I was being a control freak but if nothing else he probably saw my nerves rattled to the bone. He knew just what to say, I took his advice and I found my peace in that moment. I find it very important that every choice you make when on this journey feels like “home”. You will know that feeling when it hits you. If you make a decision and it doesn’t have that comfortable, “I’m home” feeling, change it! This is how we chose our adoption attorney and our home study worker. With that being said and out of the way, if you are looking for an adoption attorney start here: Swain Law, Adoption Attorney!
7: This may make me unpopular (not that I care) and this is coming from my personal experience combined with the experience of other adoptive parents I have gotten to know… Agencies, some…most…all (?) may have the best intentions but they don’t make money off of expectant mothers who choose to parent their child. Adoption Agencies are businesses and just like every other business they need to have income to survive. They also rule the marketing world for adoption. Google “How do I adopt?” and you you will be swarmed with agencies and guidelines that all tell you going through a private adoption like ours will end in heartbreak more often than not. Well, let me tell you. I was in the biggest adoption group on Facebook and guess what I learned… “Adoption Disruptions” are not any more common with private/attorney adoption versus agency adoption. I have seen couples shell out $3,000 and up (way up) to get he ball rolling on adoptions via agencies and the expectant mother decides to parent. I have seen babies go to adoptive homes and the biological mother decide to parent. Guess what happens? Adoptive parents are forced to return what has already been their baby and they, in most cases are out the money spent. I have seen adoptive parents lose their entire savings and end up childless and broke leaving them with only one choice: find away to be satisfied never being parents. I saw it more times than I ever thought I would. We are so lucky that we chose to have all avenues open for us. We chose to start the process with finding an expectant mother while fundraising and saving for an agency (before I know what I know now about agencies). Some couples refuse to even go the route we did for fear of disruption and STILL end up with the heartbreak of a disrupted adoption.
I made sure to listen and absorb every story I could, not only from adoptive couples and waiting couples but from adoptees and biological parents. When we began our journey I had no clue what the Adoption Pyramid was nor did I care. I just wanted to be a Mommy… NOW. My heart was getting bitter and nothing mattered more to me than being someone’s Mommy. I am so glad that I learned all about the pyramid through hours and hours of reading posts, listening to podcasts, reading blogs, watching videos, etc. Having that knowledge BEFORE Kassie was born has very much changed the path of our adoption. We didn’t just gain a daughter, we gained another family. Her biological family is our family now too. I hope they always choose to be in our lives. Okay, I trailed off as I do. I am fortunate to have used the resources available to me to learn all about the importance of the pyramid. I listened to so many adoptees and biological mothers tell their stories. So often, the biological mothers have gone through the agencies instead of privately finding a couple like Kassie’s bio family did. They go through the agencies because they feel safer, they feel like the couples are screened better, and there is less chance of anything going wrong. Unfortunately they (their words, not mine) are manipulated into placing their child when they are vulnerable and unprepared to make that huge decision. You know what…this may just be a blog for another time. I am sure I will be attacked for saying these things that I learned in the dark and speaking them into the light. So let me stop with full intention to bring this to light another time when I am better able to articulate what I mean.
So here is a final recap:
Adoption Method: Private Infant Domestic Adoption

June 6th, 2017: Began spreading our story and calling for Star Hunters to help get the word out.

Total Cost: $8,280.22!
Tumblr media

#1 ANSWER.
It was my first week into my new job that I meet Barney. It didn’t take long for me to realize how much of a low-art asshole he was. One thing they didn’t tell me about being hired to work in this place was to not be myself or have dissenting views.
Only a couple of weeks went by and I started to see how bullish and intrusive Barney was. Ordinary conversations became interrogations. Barney became easily fascinated when he asked me about myself, my point of view, or what my stance was on certain people or subjects. So fascinated that it got annoying real quick. For instance, my co-workers were talking about this since long-forgotten reality show The Jersey Shore. As usual, I could care less about pointless things. I was minding my own business doing my job until I was caught in his crossfire.
“So, tell me. What do you think about Snooki?”
“No thanks.”
“What? You’re kidding me. Tell me you wouldn’t want a piece of Snooki.”
“No.”
“What?! You’re serious!”
“No. I don’t care for her.”
“C’mon! You’re serious, right? Everyone thinks Snooki is hot! You don’t think Snooki is hot?”
“I don’t.”
“So…you’re saying that you don’t find Snooki hot.”
“No.”
“C’mon. What are you? A homo?”
Let’s take the time and run through this. Barney asked me a question and I gave him an answer. Simple as that. He wasn’t happy with my answer because he expected me to say what he wanted to hear. I shattered his expectations. Instead of letting it be, he kept on persisting me for re-assurance because his small implosive mind couldn’t take it. He also assumed to speak for everyone that some non-factor was hot, confusing opinion with fact. When I ultimately refused to give in, he insults me. As the old saying goes, ‘the television is always right’.
Because of this, Barney the One-Trick Pony™ constantly (and falsely) accused me of being gay. He went as far as trying to set me up with one of his lady friends. He even went further in lecturing me on why I needed to be married and why I should carry on the family name.
That was my mistake. I should’ve kept my mouth shut. I leave myself open to this and Barney turns into this Long Island ‘muthuh’ who endlessly criticizes others because they don’t live up to their standards. But he was no normal muthuh, he was a six-foot-three 350-pound 45-year old has-been who lived alone, had no girlfriend, and was very much into queer jokes, six-packs of beer, and phone sex which he openly disclosed to me while I was having lunch.
Perhaps if I criticized Barney on wearing an old, faded, crackling football jersey because they’re pathetic legendary losers who consistently fail to make the playoffs, he would be greatly offended. But I don’t do that to people. Unlike him, I have some sort of respect for others. I also can’t imagine if I called him out on his low-brow world of 1-900 numbers, bathroom stall writing, and online porn; because no one should ever put another person’s manhood in question of someone who watches sports, guns down a twelve pack, and relies on cheap obvious women. God forbid.
**********
Another Sunday, another weekend to disrupt my life and throw away beautiful blue skies, green grass, and white clouds to go to work; to deal with the curious public and an even more curious group of co-workers. When I mean curious, I mean ‘violating my privacy to the point it’s disgusting’ curious.
As usual, anything and everything about everyone working behind the counter is mined, revealed, sensationalized, and talked about for weeks if not months at a time. Whereas cameras are everywhere where I work; their plastic domes, tinted lenses sophistication, and inability to talk have absolutely no effect. But human nature is so cunning and so complex that my co-workers are an even bigger threat. They do everything they can to make other certain co-workers uneasy and destroy whatever sense of boundaries, privacy, space, or etiquette they were supposed to have all for a laugh or two. Our. God. Given. Right.
Elvis, who is best friends with Barney, is one of the most insipid, obnoxious, and mentally bankrupt individuals I have ever met. He always seems to strike up random conversations with me at the worst possible moment, which is usually when I’m working. If it’s not about something I’ve gotten over or experienced days, weeks, or months ago, it’s always the same stale repetitive boring questions. “So, how’s your dad? Is he still staying home? Still watching Maury? Does he go out? What does he eat? Do you guys go out? Where do you go? Do you have fun with your dad?”
Sometimes as I’m having lunch alone in the break room in complete silence, he would sit down with me, uninvited of course, and start asking me those rapid-fire series of pointless questions that are below me because I moved on from that game decades ago. “So what’s in today’s paper? What happened? Anything good? What’s this headline say? Hey, would you fuck Amana Bynes? You wouldn’t? Why not? Are you OK? Why are you feeling annoyed?”
This is pretty much the level of stupidity I endure every day working with Elvis. As if I don’t get enough unwanted unsolicited dumbstruck comments and unneeded questions from customers, I end up having Elvis’s display of genius come to me. It’s very hard to avoid. We’re only a few feet from each other at all times but somehow dumb is so generous where I live that there’s always more to go around and share. It wasn’t until very recently that a red card was pulled right in front of my face that made me dismiss him and write him off totally.
One Friday morning before work, I took Cath- to a salon to go get her cut for her sister Cheree’s graduation in Pennsylvania. My assistant manager Alphonso gave me a very rare Saturday off. It would have been ideal for both Cath- and I to get together for Saturday but it wasn’t possible because that was Cheree’s graduation day. Take one in the loss column. The following busy Sunday at work, Elvis once again pitches for conversation towards me.
“So, uh, how was work yesterday?”
“I didn’t work yesterday. I was off.”
“Oh, really? Off on a Saturday?! How did you end up getting off on a Saturday?”
“I don’t know. Alfonso just scheduled me off for Saturday, I guess?”
“Really?”
“…yeah.”
“So what did you do on your Saturday off?”
“Well, nothing really. I just went to the gym then stayed home for the rest of the day to relax.
“Wow, you went to the gym and that’s it?”
“Yeah, it was miserable out. Then again, all that didn’t matter as my friend was in PA for a graduation.”
“Was your friend a guy or a girl?”
“…it didn’t matter. Nothing really happened that day.”
“Was your friend a guy or a girl?”
“Why are you asking me this again? Why does it matter who I hang out with?”
“Was your friend a guy or a girl?”
I shook my head at Elvis, exhaled, and walked away from him. Next week we will play this game again, but for now I just saved myself from another round on endless embarrassment and unwanted humiliation.
That is why I can no longer talk to people anymore. It mattered so much to this fucking stumble. Elvis was looking to once again take something personal of mine and turn it into a front-page headline for the entire department to throw around, make fun of, and blow up as the workplace news story of the week. Because we’re so needy for excitement and self-gratification that we have to know every little thing that goes on in other people’s personal lives, in this case for my co-workers to use it against me.
This seriously took off on me. Our own mini-NSA-in-training Elvis was really that fascinated as to what gender my friend was. That meant so much to him. He really wanted to get off on the fact that I spent time with a female since the only things that take up real estate in his mind are getting plastered on weekends and “hot girls”, according to him. OK, so what else does he want to know? Did I sleep with her last night? What was she wearing? Was she a Ginger or an Asian? What positions did we do? How long did it last? What exact words did she scream out? Was it good? And did I kiss her goodnight, make her breakfast, or just get dressed and run out of her house? Do I get $100 for every correct answer?
How would Elvis like it if I would stop his world every five minutes to ask about his everyday mundane life of nothing? Would he appreciate it if I would distract him endlessly with pointless questions and ‘yes’ and ‘no’ answers? Would it annoy him to no end if I intruded into his personal life only to ridicule it along with all of the other co-workers around? Should I ask him about the photos his friends took when they drew cocks on his head while he was plastered drunk at a party? Or when was the last time he touched a girl or when had any female gave him eye contact? I wouldn’t think so, either.
**********
Questions. I gave up on them. I no longer have the time, care, or patience to tend or answer them anymore. I don’t deserve to stand in one place with my life being put under a microscope as undeserving people around me are dying to know a lot of things about me that will never pertain or affect them.
I mind my own business doing what I need to do for the day. I only focus on the bigger, more important things at stake. They stand there and start asking me questions about my personal life as it is so special or urgent. It’s not, really. It’s just a little different than others. What could I tell them? They feel unusual enough to stop at every answer and act like they’re so surprised. Really, what is such a big deal about the mundane things in my life that catch them off-guard? Obviously they’re un-accepting and shallow-minded, the blinders they wear have not been widened.
I had gotten tiresome of their interview sessions. I stay away and I do, but only for a while. I have been told to ignore them, to not answer them. I do take the advice but these downturns push harder. They ask and ask and ask and persist to no end until I give up and hopelessly answer because I know they will never stop if I don’t. Somehow my answers complicate things even more for them so the hits just keep on going. It’s a lose-lose situation.
The difference between me and them is that I understand and they don’t. I respect people for who they are because I understand. I have it all figured out so I don’t need to ask any further. Barney and Elvis’s child-like fascination with my life want me to “get with the program” because they don’t get it the first time. Conversations aren’t worth having with certain masturbatory people when they clutch and pull themselves over the answers they are given.
I’m not a celebrity and I never asked to be one. I never asked for them to make me special. I never asked for a circus surrounding my life and I never asked to be put on the hot seat. I don’t need them questioning every move I make in my life when there are better things during the day I need to focus on. I don’t have to answer to anyone if I don’t want to. I don’t need to pay attention to the feeble-minded and uneducated to constantly disrupt my day and waste my time. I have way more important things to worry about other than to satisfy simple minds who can’t figure it out and worry about things that have nothing to do with them. They truly don’t deserve the attention, therefore they will be forgotten about.

You read that warning right??
Go do that. Don’t you fucking DARE flame me if you didn’t take these warnings seriously.
Anti came to Hendrik Von Schneeplestein at his absolute lowest point.  At that broken, drunken juncture; the ‘sweetspot’ Anti called it, hovering between a life and death decision.  At Hendrik’s most vulnerable the disembodied, hissing whisper appealed to his doubts. “It is not your time.”
~*~
Chase Brody was an eternal optimist. Even now he couldn’t bring himself to accept that it was truly over. That the love of his life would actually go through with her sudden, out-of-the-blue threat of divorce.  Sure, Stacy hadn’t quite seemed herself lately, but he’d put that down to the stress of raising their three young children around her work schedule while he ploughed all of his hours into raising the profile of his fledgling YouTube channel.  If he pulled it off, and he could - he was an optimist, if he pulled it off she would never need to work another day in her life. They could live the dream as the perfect nuclear family.
She sounded pretty final on the phone. She’d found someone else.  Someone with a ‘real job’, someone who could provide.  A doctor, no less. He hadn’t felt this surge of gut-wrenching panic since Katie’s meningitis scare last year.  He could hear her begging her mother for the phone. She sounded so tiny when it was begrudgingly passed to her. “Daddy? I’m scared.”
The tug on his heart was overwhelming. “Hi sweetie,” he greeted as calmly as he could, “daddy loves you-”  A flash of white noise in his ear and a click.  The line fell utterly silent. His phone died.  His will followed.
They were gone.
It was a Nerf gun, but it felt so natural in his hand. It was a Nerf gun, but it made so much sense in his head. It was a Nerf gun, but the click was the last thing he heard.
He woke in a cool, white room. Beeps to his right; an electronic cardiograph. A bag of clear liquid hanging from a stand to his left.  A hospital room. He tried to move but his wrists were restrained by thick padded cuffs.
He was greeted by a young German doctor who explained that the restraints were for his own protection.  His cameraman had been forced to sit on him to prevent him tearing out his own throat and gouging out one eye while unconscious. Paramedics had sedated and restrained him.  The doctor had signed to have him transferred for special treatment.  Creepily, he’d added that they would not be disturbed.
The doctor asked if he remembered why he’d tried to commit suicide with a Nerf gun. It all came back to him so suddenly that he wanted to vomit. She was gone.  Stacy. She’d taken the kids. His angels.  All gone. He’d felt sick after the call. Nauseous and confused.  The gun had felt so real.  When he asked if he was crazy the doctor giggled.  Then twitched.  Then he argued with himself.  When Chase worriedly asked if he heard voices the doctor replied “Only von.”
A voice in his mind chuckled its response, “Mine.” He got a sense of green and of decay and filth and static and corruption.  It all went downhill from there.
When Anti manifested, crouched over Chase on his gurney, those wide, black eyes swirled like ink in water. Sickly clammy skin shimmered under the lights. The spidery, delicate fingers scraped lovingly over his throat.  Hot, sweet breath snorted out from the chilling grin as he twitched and giggled, sniffing at Chase’s temple.  “Well hello, there.”
Anti didn’t waste much time in explaining Chase’s predicament.
The ‘Good Doctor’ had been enlisted to help him find a serum that would leave Jack utterly defenceless to him.  Something that would allow him to attach himself to every cell, enzyme and neuron to prevent Jack kicking back when his annoyingly powerful conscience was stretched to breaking point.  The serum would be a permanent key. A solution to a puzzle box.  True possession. Pure puppetry.
Of course Hendrik needed an incentive.  He’d lost his license and home after the untimely death of his accountant on the operating table.  He’d lost his family.  Anti had found him at his most vulnerable, infected his drunken dreams, eaten into his psyche.  Anti could wear him like a glove now if he chose, but his promises had been enough. A promise from Anti was rare. A broken promise was much rarer still.
The doctor was miraculously taken on at the old Herbert West Psychiatric Hospital just a few days ago. He now lives in a nice warm home with a new family. Stacy’s already been infected with a little foetal seed of corruption.  But that, so Anti told him, is where the news improves.
The doctor will have Stacy. He will have the home.  He will have a new and powerful baby to raise.  He will have his family.  He doesn’t need Chase’s three brats getting in the way.
Chase will have his children back.  His angels.
All he needs to do is cooperate with the doctor’s research.  All he needs to do is explain the pain and neurosis in great detail.  For every new serum until the right one is found.  All he needs to do is let Anti in and then try to battle him and win. For every new serum.  The day he loses, the day Anti pushes Chase’s own strong conscience past breaking point, the day he breaks Chase and forces him commit a terrible act… That is the day Anti has his permanent key to Jack.  That is the day Chase’s trials are over. He can take his kids and go.
It’s been four days since he was tricked into bargaining for his children.  It’s been four days of explaining his torture in minute detail. It’s harder now.  His throat is hoarse from screaming. His eyes are dry from tears.  His muscles burn and convulse with the very threat of another injection.
It’s been two agonising hours since Anti confessed in a whisper that it was he who murdered Peter during the operation that destroyed Hendrik’s life.  It was he who corrupted Stacy to accept her new lover and Cambion child.  He was he who orchestrated this entire thing as a test run family for when he has total control of Jack.  Jack’s Cambion will be adored by MILLIONS.  Worshipped.
It’s been four days of battling unknown serum side-effects and a demon that forces and worms beneath his skin. That slithers around his mind inducing static and Hellish nightmare urges. Four days of barely defeating Anti.  Four days of refusing to choose which of his angels he leaves on the hospital floor.

A.J. Styles/OC: A.J. shows that sometimes you just need a little tenderness.
* * * * *
It was nearing closing time when the phone began to ring. I was sitting on my purple balance ball, scrolling through the end of the month financial reports. I attempted the ignore the annoying ring. My assistant, Kaia, would answer it.
After the fourth ring, I heard her voice coming through the partially opened office door. Her bright greeting made me smile. Kaia was definitely a people person. She never met a stranger and she always wore a sunny smile.
Truth be told, I’d be lost without her. She’d been invaluable from the moment Oasis Day Spa opened. She was as dedicated as they came. Her competent handling of the daily operations allowed me to spend my time bringing relaxation to people.
I half-heartedly attempted to make sense of the numbers filling my computer screen. I blinked wearily, my eyes blurry from the long day. All I wanted was a cup of herbal tea and a hot shower. Setting aside the computer mouse, I stretched my arms over my head. I rolled my hips forward and back, the ball easing the subtle motion into fluid movement. The kink at the base of my spine eased as I leaned my palms against the desk.
I stood slowly, my eyes once again straying to the glass door that separated my office from the main lobby. I heard Kaia’s low voice coming through. She was apologizing to the caller. With a frown, I snapped off my desk lamp and left my office.
“I’m sorry, sir, we are about to close.” Kaia’s dark gaze met mine across the high desk.
Her perfectly arched brow rose as she asked the caller to hold. She leaned her elbow on the desk as she cradled the phone in her left hand.
“There is a gentleman on line three that insists I ask if you will take pity and see him this evening?”
Glancing at the metal and glass clock above Kaia’s head, I realized it was less than ten minutes until we officially closed. As much as I would enjoy the profits, my hands were tired and my brain was demanding a break.
“See if we can schedule him for the late appointment tomorrow.”
Kaia nodded once the resumed the call.
“Quinn is not available this evening. May I schedule you for tomorrow? I have a six o'clock appointment available.”
She was quiet for a moment. Her gorgeous eyes once again flicked up to meet mine. She covered the receiver with a polished hand.
“He asked if you’re available for your favorite client?”
Frowning hard, I reached for the phone.
“Oasis Day Spa, this is Quinn. How may I help you?”
The soft laugh coming through the phone made my breath catch. There was no doubt in my mind this was, in fact, my most favorite client.
“Hey, darlin’, are you sure you don’t have time for me?” A.J. Style’s soft, southern drawl came through the line.
I couldn’t stop the smile that stole across my features. I leaned my hip against the shiny, wooden desk.
“Well, it is almost closing time.” I murmured as I shot Kaia a knowing glance. She pushed away from her desk and crossed her arms over her ample bosom.
“I know I’m asking a lot.” A.J.’s voice held a trace of amusement. “But, you know you’re the only one for me.”
I rolled my eyes at his cheesy line. “I’m sure we could get you in for a nice Swedish massage. I’ll check the books to see if we have an opening.”
A.J.’s husky laugh moved through me like a balm. “Damn, girl, you sure do know how to torture a man.”
“You know me, I’m a sucker for a pretty face.” I couldn’t stop myself. The words were gone before I realized they’d left my lips.
A.J.’s laugh faded away. “I’d really like to see you, Quinn.”
How could I possibly refuse? A.J. and I had an odd relationship. We’d felt the sparks between us. It was undeniable. And truth be told, I did enjoy his visits to the spa. He was a sweet guy; a total charmer through and through. The fact that his visits had become more frequent was not lost on me. Yet, we had always kept things on a professional level. He’d never put the moves on me. In fact, he’d always been a perfect gentleman.
“If you can be here in twenty minutes, I’ll squeeze you in.”
Kaia gave me a knowing glance as she picked up her cellphone and keys. She knew without being told that she could leave if she wanted.
A.J. made a low sound in the back of his throat. “I’ll be there in ten.”
As I hung up the phone, I realized butterflies were taking flight in my stomach. I silently scolded myself. There was no reason to be nervous. A.J. was a friend of sorts. We got along perfectly well. So, why, was I standing at the window as Kaia left?
I stared out as Kaia’s sleek coupe pulled out of the parking lot. In the blink of an eye, darkness fell again. Fighting back a wave of something I couldn’t name, I paced slowly between the two bay windows. Every time a vehicle passed, my gaze flicked outside.
Exactly nine minutes and forty-seven seconds later, a dark colored truck pulled up. I stopped short, turning toward the bay window. The driver’s door opened and a shadow stepped down. His gait was easy as he crossed the empty parking lot. He took the front steps two at a time. As the door swung open, I realized I was holding my breath.
A.J. Styles sure knew how to make an entrance. He gently closed the heavy glass door behind him. He paused long enough to take off his black baseball cap. His hand through the brown locks as he moved deeper into the lobby. He spotted me instantly and smiled. Deeply cut dimples flashed as he cocked his head to the side.
“Long time, no see.” His deep voice caught me off guard as much as the dimples did.
It wasn’t the first time I’d noticed how attractive the man was. Hell, I’d have to be dead not to. From the top of his tousled head to the soles of the black boots, the man oozed sexiness.
“Yes, it has.” Thankfully, I didn’t give voice to the rest of my thoughts. It’d been too long since he’d entered my quaint little corner of Georgia.
Shaking myself back to reality, I took a deep breath. I rubbed my suddenly damp palms down my cotton covered thighs.
“So, uh, are you ready to do this?” My voice was a breathy whisper. My inner Marilyn Monroe was surfacing.
Apparently, it was not lost on A.J., either. His dark brow shot up as he studied me with wide blue eyes. For a long moment, he stood still. Finally, he broke the tension by motioning with his hand.
          “After you.”
I mentally kicked myself as I turned down the short hallway to the left. My shoes made no sound as we crossed the shiny oak floor. I opened the last door on the left and stepped aside. A.J. nodded as he stepped into the room. His shrewd eyes took in the scene. Vanilla scented candles sat on a low table just to the left of the door. Soft music played in the background. The waist high leather massage table sat slightly right of the center of the room.
As I looked around the small space, I realized that I had brought him to my favorite room. It was more than the watercolor paintings on the walls. It was more than the small, stained glass window. I hadn’t realized it before, but this was the room where I had first met the incomparable Mr. Styles.
Pushing away the memory, I pointed to the neatly folded cream colored sheet at the foot of the table.
“You know the drill. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
I made a hasty retreat before he could answer. I forced myself back to my office. I grabbed the water bottle off my desk and quickly downed half of the contents. I pressed the tepid bottle against my forehead as I chided myself. What the hell was wrong with me? Since when did a good looking man make me lose all sensibility? I’m a professional, for crying out loud.
I caught my reflection in the window behind my desk. I stared at the unwavering image for a moment. You can do this. I gave the woman looking back at me a nod. I smoothed a hand over my white polo shirt. I tossed my auburn hair back and squared my shoulders. Damn right. I absolutely could do this.
I left my office again and moved with renewed purpose down the hallway. I rapped lightly on the door before pushing it open. The sight that greeted me made my new found resolve dissolve like sugar. A.J. lay face down on the table, his face turned toward me. His cheek rested on his stacked hands. The sheet I had pointed out earlier was draped over the lower half of his body. The creamy material pooled just below his waist.
The soft sound of the door snicking closed snapped back to reality. I sucked in a deep breath as I forced one foot in front of the other. As I approached the table, I kept my gaze firmly fixed on his face. I moved to the far side of the table and picked up the bottle of sweet almond oil from the warmer. I flipped the bottle open and studied it before pouring a small amount onto my palm.
I flicked a glance at A.J. before stepping closer. He was as relaxed as I’d ever seen him, while I was on the verge of jumping out of my skin. I placed my hand in the center of his broad back. He sucked in a breath through his teeth before slowly exhaling. I waited for him to still before taking the first long stroke.
I forced myself to focus on the fluid motion of my hands. I’ve done well over a thousand massages in my careers. I should be able to do this in my sleep. Yet, it took every once of my concentration to complete the familiar movements. Placing my hands together, I made small circles along the left side of his spine.
Tracking the movement of my hands, I made sure not to miss an inch. His supple flesh moved like silk beneath my fingertips. I followed the long line of his spine until I reached the base of his neck. My fingers slid across the tight bundle of nerves. A.J. sucked in a deep breath as my fingers brushed against his hair line.
The sound sent a bolt of electricity straight through me. The warmth settled low, making me incredibly aware of my nether parts. I forced myself to slowly pull away from him. I shook my hands out as I waited for the tingling to sensation to pass. To give myself more time, I moved to the head of the table. I silently counted to five before placing my hands on his broad shoulders.
Again, A.J. made a muffled sound as my hands began moving across the width of his back. The vibrations moved through my palms and up my arms. It was little wonder when I felt my nipples begin to tingle. I bit back a moan. This was not supposed to be happening. It was common to have a client become aroused. In fact, it happened on a semi regular basis. But, this was the first time that I had ever been turned on.
Perhaps the hazy fog overtaking my brain made me imagine the subtle brush of fingertips over my hip. Startled, I froze. My arms were stretched as far as possible, nearly reaching his hips. Glancing down, I realized less than an inch separated us. I was close enough to feel the warmth of his skin. I caught his scent, earthy and rich.
As I slowly straightened, I felt the gentle pressure again. This time, there was no mistake. A.J.’s thick fingers lightly grasped the hem of my shirt. Disbelieving, I looked at his face. His blue eyes were wide and staring upward. His supple lips were parted. I swallowed hard as I returned his unblinking gaze.
In slow motion, I saw my hand fall to cover his.  I hesitated, not knowing what to do next. Should I gracefully extract myself from his grip? Should I ignore the sensations swirling through my body and continue as if nothing happened? The heat in his gaze made the answer obvious. His caress was no accident. The electricity charging the air was no mistake.
A.J. slowly released me. He slid his arms away, using them to push away from the table. He pulled himself into a sitting position. All the while, his eyes never left mine. He stared at me, silently asking my agreement. It wasn’t until he extended his hand toward me, that I knew my decision was  made. Placing my palm against his, I allowed him to guide me around the table to stand before him.
He pulled me to stand between his slightly parted thighs. I felt like an awkward school girl. I had no idea if I should touch him or wait for an invitation. The decision was taken from me as A.J. guided my palms to rest on his pecs. He reached between us, his hand going upward. His thumb stroke across my trembling lips before sliding against my cheek. He stopped once his thick fingers were buried in my hair. With a gentle pressure, he guided my head downward.
There was no way I could prepare myself. The feather light caress of his lips against mine rocked me like lightening. My lips parted, allowing him access. The man sure as hell knew how to kiss! He explored every inch, the edges of my teeth, along the soft valleys of my tongue.
His hand fell from my hair to land on my shoulder. He gripped me lightly for a moment before trailing his fingertips down the length of my arm. When he reached my hand, he laced his fingers through mine. He drew my hand from his skin. He kissed each finger before placing my hand at my side. He repeated the same tenderness with my other hand.
Fear flashed through me. Had he changed his mind? Had he realized this was utter lunacy? However, the look in his blue eyes stopped me before I could form a single syllable.
“One of us is over dressed.” The teasing lilt in his voice made me smile.
Those few words were enough to prompt me to action. I pulled my shirt over my head and let it fall to the floor at our feet. A.J.’s reaction emboldened me. Heat flashed in his eyes as he muttered a soft curse under his breath. He reached for me, his broad palm splaying flat against my belly.
“You are so beautiful.” His praise brought a pink flush to my skin. He studied me with intensity, taking in every detail I revealed.
I slowly toed off my shoes and socks. Hooking my thumbs in the waist band of my pants, I began tugging the soft material downward. A.J.’s hands shot out to cover mine. I assumed he would take over. However, he simply placed his hands over mine and allowed me to continue. When I moved too far downward, A.J. took the opportunity to slide down from the table.
He stood before me and I realized how well we would fit together. His body was hard angles and muscles. My body was softly curved. A.J. had the same realization as I. The appreciation in his gaze was evident.
Reaching behind me with one hand, I freed the clasp of my bra. Pulling the satin material away, I let it dangle from my fingers. A.J.’s reaction was immediate. He closed the distance between us, his arms locking around my waist. Heat poured from him in waves, washing over me, sweeping me into the currents of his passion.
“Damn, girl, you are killing me.”
The words were whispered against my lips a moment before he claimed them again. His gentleness was quickly giving way to passionate demand. Before I could react, he spun us around. My ass connected with the leather covered table. Without being asked, I rested my weight against it. I expected him to close the distance between us. However, he stood rooted in place, gazing at me with an intensity I’d never witnessed. His heated gaze moved over me, taking in every single detail of my body. I was certain he was committing every dimple and freckle to memory.
Unable to take the separation another moment, I reached for him. I tugged the sheet away from his slim hips. My gasp was loud in the suddenly silent room. Nothing could have prepared me for the glorious sight of A.J.. His erection jutted proudly toward me. A drop of pearlescent liquid formed on the blunt tip. I reached for him, running the tips of my fingers down the underside of the thick shaft.
His head fell back against his shoulders as he allowed my exploration. I stopped when my fingers brushed the twin weights below. A low growl rumbled from his chest as I retraced the path to the tip. Before I could repeat the motion, his hand covered mine.
“Don’t want this to end before it’s started.”
His voice was deep with desire. His accent was thick and sweet as honeysuckle. I couldn’t resist his request that I end his torture.
Leaning backward on my palms, I waited for him to make the next move. He did not disappoint. His hands covered my breasts, molding the plaint flesh against his palms. He worked me carefully, shaping my breasts, pushing them higher before tugging lightly. My nipples beaded into hungry points. I never thought anything could feel as good his hands on me.
Then, he replaced his left hand with his mouth. Heat pooled between my legs as he drew the sharp edges of his teeth across my nipple. He laved away the slight sting with the flat of his tongue. He repeated the sequence until I lost all reason. My hands stroked his hair, the silken strands winding through my fingers. I pulled him closer, not stopping until his nose was buried against my breast.
“Easy, baby, I got you.” He murmured against my skin.
I glanced downward and caught a glimpse of his face in profile. His dimples flashed again as he continued to nuzzle me.
A frustrated whimper escaped me. Surely, I would burn alive before he quenched the raging inferno he built. My thighs moved restlessly, hoping to ease the relentless ache. Sensing my need, his hand dropped to the crease of my thighs. They parted for him, allowing just enough space for his fingers. He cupped my mound, pressing the heel of his hand against my clit. His long fingers fell perfectly against my valley. The tip of his index finger rested against my entrance.
He watched me intently as his finger dipped inside. He moved slowly, allowing me to feel every nuance of his deliberate exploration. A tortured gasp left me as he withdrew just as slowly. On the next pass, a second finger joined the first. I felt so exposed as he hungrily watched his fingers disappear into my pussy.
“That’s it, Quinn, open up for me.” His voice brought a ripple of pleasure I hadn’t expected.
My thighs parted further as he continued the slow torture. Unable to resist, my hips rolled toward him. I gasped in pleasure as his fingers withdrew then pressed tightly against my overly sensitive clit. I moaned at the intensity. My eyes met his as I reached for him. My palm landed  on his hip.
“Please, A.J.” I gasped as he leaned over me.
He pressed my back against the supple leather and drew my legs over his hips. His smile was positively wicked as he stepped closer. The broad tip of his cock nudged against my slick folds. He paused, his hand coming to rest over my pounding heart.
“Say it, again, baby.” He rolled his hips ever so slightly. The pressure of his cock against my pussy grew ten fold.
          “Say my name.”
His name fell from my lips, imploring him to give what we both wanted. I lost all sense of myself as he finally pushed forward. His cock stretched me impossibly wide. The slight sting was quickly smoothed away by waves of pleasure.
A.J. took his time, allowing me to grow accustomed to his invasion. His cock was bigger than I expected and harder than steel. Fear flashed through me as I realized he was more than I could take. Panic broke through the passion as A.J. began to pull back. He soothed me with a whispered word. His free hand slid under my hips and adjusted my position. The subtle change made A.J. moan. The sound ricocheted through me. It was absolutely the sexiest sound I’d ever heard.
His eyes never left my face as he inched forward again. His cock fit perfectly this time, filling me to the brim. I gasped in surprise as he pressed deeper. He held himself tightly against me, letting me feel every bit of himself. A needy whimper broke free as he began to withdraw.
A.J.’s tenderness would be my undoing. He whispered words of praise as he moved. Tension wound tightly through me as he pushed deep then withdrew. His thumb slipped between our slick bodies and instantly found my aching clit. He made tight circles around the small nub as he continued slowly fucking me.
I moved restlessly against him, arching into this thrusts, retreating as he drew back. My blunt nails sank into his thick forearms. I held onto him tightly, anchoring myself through the passionate gales he wrought.
He knew my orgasm started before I did. His thumb swept over my clit, pressing more with each pass. Stars exploded in my vision. My pussy tightened painfully around his cock. I came more than I ever had. My body was weak, lying limply beneath him. But, still he continued on. He didn’t stop until the knot of desire wound tightly through me again. This time, though, I did not go alone.
A.J. leaned down and captured my lips with his. He kissed me deeply before pressing his lips to my ear. His moan was low and long against my ear as he came. His body shook with the force of his passion. Hot jets bathed my womb. He came until he collapsed weakly against me. His arms slid beneath me and anchored me to him.
He kissed my temple tenderly as the haze of passion began to fade. Slowly, he withdrew from my depths. His cock was warm and sticky as it rested against my thigh. A wicked smile crossed his face as he helped me sit up. His thumb brushed across my lips several times before he drew away.
His words would stay with me as he helped me get dressed.
“Now, I know for sure I’m you’re favorite.”
