okko’s inn is so good. the director was a key animator for ghibli so it has all the beauty of that style and the “strong female lead” philosophy carried over. it’s about an autistic girl with trauma and a found family trope IF YOU EVEN CARE
the realistic portrayal of panic attacks and how her grief wasnt sanitized or brushed over just because shes a little girl but also wasnt overdone, the portrayal of trauma was really well balanced.... her seemingly flat affect in the beginning was hinted at being due to her in the first stage of giref, but the telling of the story is so interestingly done (and there were so many points where i thought this could be darker! but it still chose to keep it “light” without missing any minor details that made it viscerally sad, it’s subjective if this improves it but i think it does) that the healing she goes through isnt so much in stages but something without a beginning or end ... AND her seemingly flat effect could be the fact that shes autistic and doesnt emote as to whats typical, and in regards to whats typical SHES NOT TYPICAL: SHE CAN SEE GHOSTS (=AUTISTIC CODED) AND AS SEEN BY HER LACK OF UNDERSTANDING SOCIAL CUES AND HER LACK OF FILTER (HOW SHE KEEPS IT 100 PERCENT REAL) (and when she’s cornered into ‘lying’ to someone or herself it’s actually her going mute and the other person fills in the gaps OR its a total misunderstanding, but she never lies) and shes so honest to the point of being a jackass (like when she honestly told ‘filly pink’ what she thought about her style and on THAT note matsuki is autistic too) ugh and the ying yang aesthetic at the very end with okko and matsuki, how it showed their backs looking towards a bright future..... and how the both of them are dealing with grief and loss but in different ways due to privilege and how privilege plays a role in growth and the bias of independent success: when matsuki does something genius, she doesnt respond kinda like how okko doesnt respond when she hears something she knows isnt true; how when the chef makes amazing meals he’s humble about it, saying it was because of the community  “youre a genius” “no, it was all a joint effort”

the final scene is so beautiful, i went to check with the colors and
1) the black / white hair dynamic AAA (i know im repeating myself bUT)
2) the red / yellow kimonos are perfectly complemented with the purple flowers
