In the great scheme of things, you’re no one special. You are, however, the key to bringing Suguru Getou back down to Earth.

Tokyo Prefecture, Myoga College Preparatory School, Annex Building #3

First year, Grade 2 Suguru Getou arrived on the scene at approx. 06:05JST. By this time the cursed spirit had already killed 8 and maimed 3, all of whom would succumb to their injuries before they could vacate the building. 2 of the victims were students of Myoga Highschool. Sustained injuries were irregular to typical curse attacks. The victims were warped by cursed energy, turning them bodily inside out.

While physically weak, the cursed spirit’s energy field is intensely powerful, making it almost impossible to touch, or escape. All non-sorcerers who encountered said spirit perished. It was “a bloodbath,” quote Suguru Getou. Annex Building #3 has been sealed to the public at this time. Whereabouts of the cursed spirit are unknown.

Tokyo Prefecture, Myoga College Preparatory School, Annex Building #3

First year, Grade 2 Suguru Getou arrived on the scene at approx. 00:05 JST. He received no instructions to do so. When inquiries were made as to why he chose to return, Getou fell silent. 2 more corpses were found in the building. Current total casualties: 13.

The cursed spirit has still not been located.

Addendum: Suguru Getou has revealed his reasons for returning to the scene were sentimental. Quote, “It just didn’t feel right.”

First years, Grade 2 Suguru Getou and Grade 1 Satoru Gojo were dispatched at 08:00JST to investigate the ongoing incident at Myoga Prep. It is believed that their cursed techniques in combination would be best suited to attend to the cursed spirit, re: June 6.

Quote Satoru Gojo, “Yeah, whatever. I got it under control.”

The first years were successful in locating the cursed spirit, however, were not the ones to exterminate it. Upon encountering the target, they discovered something that shall heretofore be referred to as The Anomaly.

Further analysis will be conducted at the behest of Jujutsu Technical College Principal, Masamichi Yaga.

Note: Suguru Getou vehemently objected to this decision. Quote, “Leave the girl alone. Hasn’t she been through enough?”

That has yet to be seen.

There is a particular absurdity to your life. Abstractly, you’d call it bad luck. However, there’s no true pattern to it. Things happen, extraordinary, terrifying, and you accept it all with a sigh and a quiet prayer, trying not to dwell on the questions without answers.

You don’t believe in ghosts, on principle.

Of course, when Myoga High’s resident bully threatens to flush your phone down the toilet if you don’t go on a scavenger hunt through the most haunted building on campus, all the rationalizing in the world is for naught.

Annex Building 3 housed the science wing, years ago. What’s left is rusting contamination hoods, moldy emergency showers, bunsen burners with bent spouts. It doesn’t smell dirty in here, per say, but the scent of decay is all around, things falling apart, naturally.

The goal of this hazing is to bring something from inside back, no other specifications. Easy enough. But — the only thing you’ve come across so far that’s not welded down are the desks, and those are too big to carry.

This used to be a right of passage at your school, and the building has been picked clean. In recent years, administration has cracked down on trespassing. They’ve bolted the doors shut, nailed down the windows. A teacher patrols the surrounding area during the day, though they wouldn’t know to be watching out for the secret, clever spots students have discovered. Highschoolers are as wily as rats, especially when there’s mischief to get into.

Although you’d prefer to keep the straight and narrow. You have big plans to get out of Tokyo after graduation — where to, you’re not sure. Just away from these people and their mundane cruelty.

You wish you had your phone.

You wish this building had been condemned later in the school’s history, that there had been less time for people to loot. As it is, you’re way farther into these halls than you ever intended to be, and the anxiety of it all is making you short of breath.

You try to rationalize, make everything make sense. The creaking linoleum and the errant dripping. The rattle of windows with each breeze. The darkness of a building with no electricity. There aren’t even bulbs left in most of the light fixtures.

You edge in further, into the shadows. The air grows colder tucked away from the sun, and your body does too.

First floor, second floor. You make it to the top of the building, with nothing to show for it. The site has well and truly been cleared out. All the previous students who made this trek left nothing behind for you.

Frustrated, you wander back toward the stairwell, ready to be free of this place.

It’s not that you’ve never stood up for yourself, only that it’s easier not to. To let things be the way they are, skirt the edges, and get away clean. It’s not the most proud or romantic way to live your life, but it’s simple. You don’t have to think much about anything— your existence is purely reactive.

The staircase is tucked away in the corner of the building, and there are no windows in it. Just the light from each floor doorway to guide you.

You make it down to the second flight of stairs, but pull up short. You feel an unnatural stream of air on your neck, like something is breathing on you. And then —

Something shoves you.

You take the last four steps hard, your ankle rolling out from under you, sending you collapsing to the floor. You look behind you, terrified, expecting someone to be standing above you, lordly and threatening. But the staircase is empty. The building is silent. You’re alone.

You take stock of yourself, as best you’re able. Your pulse is still tripping beneath your skin, mind adrenaline hazy.

Your ankle throbs, probably sprained, maybe fractured. There’s another pain, too. In your chest, and your gut. Like you’ve just swallowed a hot coal, like there’s poison inside you. You’ve never felt anything like it.

But you don’t have time to linger over it. Whoever pushed you — and you’re sure someone did — is still around. There’s no one to help you out of this, and no one will think to check for you in this condemned building.

You struggle to your feet. It’s a full body sensation, now. Like your brain had distribute the pain through your whole form, an even, swollen ache. Sweating, panting, you try putting pressure on your hurt ankle, testing it. It’s too much to bear. You slump against the cool plaster of the wall, supporting yourself with one shoulder as you limp along.

You could have died; people had died from less. The thought looms over you, the omnipresent threat.

You’ve never been one to stir the pot. You can’t think of any reason someone would want to kill you, other than a random act violence. Maybe someone was playing with you. Or maybe they got their kicks, and are done now.

The mystery is agonizing. Your mind swims with possibilities. You can still feel the shape of the aggressor’s palms on your shoulder blades, large, strong. Your brain is foggy with pain and fear. You can barely see straight.

Voices. Quiet, but close.

You head toward them instinctively, unthinkingly.

Two boys, high schoolers. They’re staring at you, mouths gaping.

One of them falls to his knees as you approach, but you can’t even wonder as to why.

You’re throwing yourself at the standing one; he’s opening his arms in answer.

“Got you,” he says. “You’re okay.”

True and false, you think, before you succumb to the darkness, passing out in the arms of your soulmate.

He’s with you when you wake.

You’re in the back seat of a car, leaned against his shoulder. He’s looking at you, as you come into consciousness, an arm wrapped low around your back, supporting you. He doesn’t seem embarrassed to be caught staring, nor does he stop. He just gives you a soft smile, nodding in greeting.

“Welcome back.”

“Are you gonna kill me?” you ask.

He laughs, at that. You can’t decide if it’s condescending or not. It’s a nice laugh, anyway, deep and smooth. He inclines his head, as if to impart a secret. “Only if you’re very bad.”

You peer at him, take in the shape of him, his particulars. He reminds you of a crow, a bit. His dark hair and sharp features, the everpresent coyness in his eyes.

And the other one, here with you too, all of you crowded into the bench. He’s so pale, almost ghostly as he stares at you.

“Are you feeling better?” the crow asks him. You can feel the rumble of it in your arm.

“She’s not doing it anymore,” the other returns. He’s still looking at you.

You can barely make sense of any of it, the situation so beyond your realm of understanding. A part of you believes these boys were the ones who pushed, but you don’t sense any malice from them. And the one beside you is holding you so gently— how could he have intended harm?

“Where are we going?” you ask. You’re not sure if you expect an answer, but the crow inclines his head again.

“Somewhere safe,” he tells you.

Despite yourself, you believe him.

The rest of the ride is spent in silence, the arm around you squeezing reassuringly every once in a while.

The further your drive, the less you recognize, until finally the car pulls to a stop at the gates of a sprawling preserve. It’s temple land, serene, mystic. The area is lush with flowering dogwood trees, so thick and tall they blot out the sunlight.

The three of you exit the vehicle. It putters off, immediately after the last door shuts, stranding you. You watch it go, throat clenching.

As soon as it’s out of sight, the ghost keels over, emptying his stomach on the pavement.

You try to give him privacy, turning away, kicking at the dust with your mary janes. But when you turn back around, he’s glaring at you, wiping his mouth on the back of his hand. Like it’s your fault.

“Right, then,” the crow says after a moment. “Let’s get this all sorted out.”

He props an arm around your waist, encouraging you to lean against him as the three of you set off into the lush green templescape.

There’s scattered explanation about the school, it’s religious affiliation, and how they’ve both just started as first years. They’re younger than you, then, by a year. The notion makes you blush, being supported by a kohai as you hop along. You have questions — several — about the nature of today’s events. But none of them make it past your lips. You wouldn’t know where to begin.

The ghost is still glaring at you, as you toddle along. “Are you doing it on purpose?”

“You know she’s not.” The crow hikes you up higher against his side, adjusting his grip on you. He has to lean down to support you, almost folding in half, but his face shows no sign of strain. Unreadable, still.

The ghost rolls his eyes. “You’re such a bleeding heart.”

They bring you to a big room. Ground floor, facing out into a zen garden. The place is ancient, from the looks of it. The tatami mats smell like dirt and starch, and the wallpaper has faded to a dull off-white. The crow helps lower you onto a floor pillow, reaching down to adjust your hurt ankle for you. He kneels before you, testing the injury, fingers brushing briefly against the purpling skin. He gives you a sympathetic smile when you wince.

“We’ll get this fixed. Soon, I promise.”

You’re instructed to stay put, brat, by the other one, and you do, though the disrespect is almost enough to make you wander off, spitefully.

A few people peek at you from the doorway in the interim. One student, wearing the same uniform as the two who brought you here. A few errant adults, who whisper amongst themselves before stealing another glance. You’re almost sure you’ve landed in some kind of cult, but, somehow, you trust that things will be okay.

The crow promised, after all.

Eventually, they return to you, flanked by teachers, and temple staff. No one looks pleased.

“You found her with the cursed spirit you exterminated?” one of them demands. He’s the oldest of the bunch, a haggard, gray man. Clearly the leader.

“We didn’t kill it,” the ghost says. He’s scowling, again. He jerks a thumb in your direction. “She did.”

The group shuffles closer, peering at you. You see the questions on their faces, raised brows, pursed lips.

“I didn’t kill anything,” you whisper. Maybe they can’t hear you, or maybe they just ignore it.

The ghost says, “She sucked the cursed energy right out of it. It was like watching the thing turn into a raisin.” He glances at you, shortly. “She took mine, too.”

The old men turn to the crow, looking for confirmation. He hesitates, glancing between you and your lame leg, ankle propped on another pillow. Then he nods. “But she has no cursed energy herself. It’s as if it was completely destroyed.”

“Is that even possible?” someone asks.

“If it is, I haven’t seen it before,” the leader says. “But if the girl can neutralize cursed energy, as you claim, something must be done with her.”

This kicks off a flurry of debate. The men gather round you, circling like vultures. They’re not looking at you, but over you, around you. You’re the epicenter of an argument you don’t understand.

“What are you saying? Of course she has to be inducted.”

“Now, just hold on a minute. This is an incredibly precarious situation, and inviting an unknown into our midst is unwise at best, and deadly at worst.”

“The nature of this ability is too corruptible to make any rash decisions. Having her on our side could be just as dangerous.”

“Agreed. Her very existence poses a threat to ours. There’s no way for us to be peaceful, let alone symbiotic.”

“So your answer is to just let her go? Into the world where anyone can grab her off the street?”

“Now, I didn’t say to let her go—“

The crow breaks the circle. He pulls you to your feet, wraps a firm arm around your waist. His expression shifts, infinitesimally, into something less amiable. He looks liable to bite.

“Are we done here?” he says, loudly, interrupting the debate. “Can she go home?”

They share hesitant glances, quiet murmurs of unrest, until the oldest one speaks. “Well, that depends. Can she control it, or is it incidental?”

Silence falls. It takes you a moment to realize they’re all looking at you, now. They’re waiting for an answer. But you have nothing to say to them.

Instead you turn your face up to the crow, give his sleeve a tug. He bends down obligingly, so you can whisper to him, “I don’t know what they’re talking about.”

His grip tightens on you, ever so slightly. “The monster,” he murmurs. “At the school.”

You shake your head. You’re not sure what happened in the annex building. You didn’t see a monster, though. You didn’t see anything at all.

“She’s curse blind,” one of them concludes.

Another round of arguing. You can’t understand, don’t care to. They’re staring at you now, an odd unkindness in their eyes. Judgment, but not in a way you’re familiar with. Judgment that only those with power can possess. Judgment from authority.

The crow runs a hand down your spine, soothing you like a skittish dog. You only just hold yourself back from burying your face against his chest.

“So you see,” he says. “She’s no threat to anyone.”

But he’s only looking at you.

The conversation peters out. No one knows what to do, and the decision is reached. It’s made clear they’ll be keeping an eye on you, while they mull it over. Then you’re free to go.

The crow takes you to separate building. He has to carry you, when you reach a flight of stairs, which you're too exhausted to be mortified by.

You end up in a morgue.

There are no bodies on the stainless steel tables, but the space is still eerie. Lit only by fluorescents, smelling strongly of antiseptic, almost painfully cool.

He helps you settle into one of the plastic chairs in the corner of the room, hovering, refusing to leave your side.

“So you really are gonna kill me,” you try for a joke.

It doesn’t work. He’s looking at you, brow furrowed. He’s not smiling. “Are you okay–”

The question is cut off by a young woman entering the room, a highschooler, wearing the same uniform as the others. She speaks briefly with your shadow, too low for you to hear. She laughs at something he says, which he seems nonplussed by. Then she turns to you.

She’s beautiful and terrifying, as she touches you with a confounding surety. Not afraid of bodies, in that natural, human way. She doesn’t ask your permission, or hesitate.

She does something to you. Holds your bare ankle in her hands, imbues it with a glowing kind of heat. It hurts, and then it doesn’t. You feel nothing at all as she pulls away, your ankle returned to its pre-injured state.

“Shoko Ieiri,” she introduces herself, rising, dusting off her hands. You realize, bemusedly, it’s the only name you’ve learned so far today.

She gives you one long look, before she shuffles out without another word, and the two of you are standing alone in the cold room.

Finally, peace.

You slump in your chair, weary. Chin propped in one hand, you peer at the boy before you, wondering where he stands in all this, if it’s all just as bizarre for him.

This has been far from the traditional meeting. You’ve been so shaken by everything that’s happened that you haven’t even had time to consider the bond.

It’s worked its strange magic on you this whole morning, though. You’re drawn to him, without logic or reasoning. Your faith in him is blind, and it’s frustrating and fascinating to think he could tell you anything right now, and you would believe it.

“Should we talk about…” You trail off, expecting him to take the reins on this conversation, too. But he smiles inquisitively, waiting for you to finish. You’re left scrambling to collect your thoughts, struggling through the mire of it all. “About—us?”

You flick the sleeve of your shirt up with one finger, giving him a glimpse of the words trailing up your wrist.

The look on his face — astonishment.

Your stomach drops.

“I’m sorry,” he says. And he does seem, genuinely, apologetic. His expression is almost a wince. “I didn’t know.”

His body tilts toward yours, like he’s about to reach for you, for your wrist. He draws up short, fists clenching at his sides. Sheepish, unsettled by the instinct to touch.

Hand shaking, you roll your sleeve up to your elbow, exposing the whole mark.

Through your life, the placement had been both a blessing and a curse. Prominent and hard to hide. All of your friends knew the words by heart, and they would chitter at you about how lucky you are, how romantic the promise of your future is. When you were bored in class, you used to doodle on them, tracing the characters in ballpoint pen, drawing blooming flowers, senseless patterns, all around it.

It was impossible to ignore, always on the back of your mind, from the day the impossible smudge had evened out into concrete words, and your fate was sealed.

Got you. You’re okay.

He brushes a finger along the line of it. Just one. The touch is so delicate, it raises gooseflesh all over your body, and it takes everything not to lean into him, throw yourself against the firm plane of his chest. You know he would catch you.

“Can I show you something?” he asks.

At your nod, he pulls away. He gives you a sardonic smile and a, “Bear with me,” before unbuttoning his uniform. His undershirt is loose and white, and he strips out of that too, sending it fluttering uselessly to the floor. He turns, giving you his back.

It’s completely black.

It’s covered in — words. Words piled on words piled on words, overwhelming his own skin until there’s hardly any of him left. You try to make out any of it, in the spiderweb tangle of marks. You can spot the tail end of characters, a preposition, one noun. But mostly it’s all lost.

You can’t find your own mark among them, no matter how hard you search. That sense of belonging you’d been waiting for all your life disappears into the ink. A sinking recognition takes its place.

“All platonic,” comes the soft rumble of your soulmate’s voice, “or so I’ve been told.”

They’d had someone look at him, upon his arrival at the school. A fortune teller, whose cursed technique revolved around soulmarks. She’d been the only one in his life who didn’t gasp at the sight of him — instead she let out a world weary sigh. It’s a tough life, isn’t it kid.

He turns, and you catch another, on his rib cage, right where his heart should be. He swipes up his shirt, and the mark is gone too quickly for you to read it. It couldn’t have mattered anyway. Even if it was the only legible thing on him, it was just one more, out of many.

He doesn’t look at you, as he redresses. Giving you a moment to collect yourself, wipe the tears from your eyes.

“A man of the people,” you say, trying for wry. It just sounds like grief.

He reaches for you, then. Takes hold of your wrist where your soulmark begins. His thumb brushes against the taper of the words, gently, gently. “Your man, still,” he murmurs. “If you’ll have me.”

You watch his hand on you, how large he is, how strong. How he handles you like something fragile as he turns your arm this way and that, inspecting the line of his own handwriting as your breathing begins to deepen, lulled by his calming presence.

“I was made for you, you know,” he tells you. “Nothing has really changed.”

He leans down, presses his forehead against the soft skin of your arm. You feel his breath there, as uneven as your own, though you would never be able to tell from his staid expression. Unruly strands of his hair brush against you, and you push them back with a pinky, tuck them behind his ear.

He shudders, some of the tension seeming to leech from his frame at the touch. Like this was what he was waiting for, the whole time. Your hands on him, a balm.

He stays like that for a long moment, hunched over you, prostrate. Something crops up in the back of your mind, about submission, and showing ones back. How if you were some wild creature you could take him by the scruff of his neck, and drag him away, and keep him.

You read somewhere that crows mate for life. How nice, you think, stroking him at the base of his skull, where tension still lingers, firm and unyielding. You wish you were a crow. You wish you were like him.

“You’re right,” you say. “It’s okay.”

He walks you home, hand clutching yours. It feels so simple, after everything that’s happened to you. Like this is the unreal part. The calm after the storm just a dream.

“I don’t even know your name,” you say. The two of you stand at the foot of your apartment complex, exhausted.

He smiles, again, softly. His thumb stroking and stroking your soulmark. “Call me Suguru.”

…

You’re now at the beck and call of the sorcerer council. You come to campus, at their behest, and let them stare at you as they mutter amongst themselves, deciding what to do with you. They never reach any definitive answer.

Suguru insists on attending these meetings, interjecting when the higher ups get out of line, or when they make impossible requests of you. Always polite, but immovable as stone.

He’s making good on his promise to keep you safe.

It’s strange to think that his loyalty comes unconditionally. He accepts you wholly, and without question. That makes you — uncomfortable. Though you can’t say why.

Maybe because you come to him so often with problems to be solved, but there’s no way for you to reciprocate. He’s learning the intimate details of your life at an alarming rate. You don’t even know his favorite color.

And you’re not the only one. You know he’s already met some of his other soulmates. It’s alluded to, at times, but never brought into the light. You’re sure he’s just as involved with them. You try to not be greedy.

“They’re afraid of me,” you say after leaving another congregation. It had been longer today, and more heated. This issue is circling the drain, and you with it.

“They don’t understand you,” Suguru murmurs, trailing after you.

You pause, turning to give him a long look. “Isn’t that the same thing?”

He smiles at you, impenetrably, and you know you’re right. Even the people who fight monsters are afraid of the dark. You’re lucky they’ve taken the initiative to poke at you, rather than just kill you.

You wonder how long their curiosity will outweigh self preservation.

“I have something for you,” Suguru says, changing the subject. He reaches into his inner pocket, holding it out for your inspection.

It’s a knife. Small, but long enough to gut a person. The handle is worn, almost crumbling, but when he unsheathes it, the blade is so smooth it looks new.

“A tantō,” he explains. “Though the original katana was lost decades ago. A normal blade can’t kill a curse; this one has been imbued with cursed energy.”

He hands it to you, pommel side first. You take it gingerly. It’s larger than you expected, and heavier too. You tilt the blade so it catches the light. Your own face is reflected back at you in the tempered metal, warped by the angle of the blade into some unrecognizable creature.

“What am I supposed to do with this?” you ask.

Suguru shrugs. “For emergencies.”

“Do sorcerers name their weapons?”

“Viper Fang,” he supplies, chuckling at your eyeroll.

You lift the blade closer to your face, inspecting the honed edge. You’ve seen the swords of samurai before, in museums, but never up close like this. You test the sharpness with your pinky, wincing at the instantaneous cut.

Suguru takes your free hand, drawing it away from the tantō. He pulls a handkerchief from his back pocket, swiftly wrapping your injured finger, applying just a little too much pressure.

“Careful,” he says. His smile is unamused. Scolding, almost. “It’s sharp.”

It’s the hand with your soulmark, and he seems to know this instinctively. His thumb pets your inner wrist as he squeezes your pinky, touching the very end of your mark.

You tighten your grip on the handle. It would never feel natural for you to hold something like this. “I don’t want it.”

You see the argument building in his expression. A wry quirk of his lips, an unhappy tilt to his brow. The slightest touch of exasperation. His gaze stays trained on your finger, all trussed up. He leans down, kisses you through the soft fabric of the handkerchief.

“Okay,” he says. “You don’t have to use it.”

You want to ask him what’s changed, why he’s doing this. What he’s learned. It doesn’t take you all that long to find out, anyway.

The council knows what they’re doing, when they put you out into the field. They’re aware of the limits to your abilities, and how to extract what they want from you, to observe your every move like a butterfly under a glass dome.

The power is triggered by adrenaline, a last ditch effort to keep you safe. It only activates under extreme duress — life or death.

They send you to deal with middling curses. You’re always accompanied by Suguru, by his own demand, and usually Gojo (after he begrudgingly tells you his name) as well. Sometimes a stranger in a suit comes along too, writing something the whole time on a small notepad. It’s never the same person twice.

You don’t know what they want from you. To see how far they can push before you just keel over dead, you assume. None of this is within your control. You can’t see the monsters, and you can’t actively interact with them.

Things happen, and Suguru explains them to you after the fact. The size and shape of the curses, how many, or few. How strong. The result is always the same. You sucked them dry, without even knowing.

This time is no different. The two of you are dropped off at the entrance to a graveyard, early in the morning. The sun has just begun to rise, casting everything in gentle shades of blue. In a few hours you’ll be in class, studying for college entrance exams.

You haven’t been sleeping well lately, and you’re swaying on your feet as Suguru leads you by the hand through the rows and rows of headstones.

The lot is large, hundreds of bodies buried here. It’s strangely peaceful. Quiet, cool. If the circumstances were different, you might even enjoy this. Your soulmate, his big hand wrapped around yours, the safety he promises, even in the most haunted places.

But there’s no space left in your life to appreciate the ambiance. This time is not your own, and every step you take is a step closer to danger.

You think, wistfully, about the tantō. A part of you longs for the security of a weapon, even with Suguru’s reassuring presence.

“This is some kind of test,” you murmur. “Isn’t it.”

“I couldn’t tell you,” he returns.

He’s left in the dark about you, purposefully. They know he’ll fight for your best interests, and that’s a threat to their agenda. Most days he walks into things with just as much information as you. He’s just better at reading between the lines.

“They want me to be a sorcerer,” you say. “They want me to be like you.”

“And what do you want?”

“I don’t know,” you say, “But I don’t think it’s this.”

You don’t see anything, but you’re swamped with a sudden feeling of foreboding. Beside you, Suguru’s eyes are wide, face palid. It’s so unlike him that you nearly gasp, before you feel the first tendril of something creeping up your leg, and you really do gasp.

Suguru is fighting that invisible force, swinging Viper Fang, unleashing his own cursed spirits. And your body is going into fight or flight, every muscle tensing up, waiting for blows that don’t come.

Because you’ve decimated whatever threat was here.

Later, days after the fact, Suguru describes the scene to you. A carnage of a hundred skittering curses, the size of mountain lions, shrieking as they evaporate into ash. His own curses were caught in it, sucked in before he had a chance to call them back.

“It’s beautiful, really,” he tells you. “And impossible. A miracle or miracles. Do you study physics? There’s rules about this universe, indisputable facts. The first law of thermodynamics, for instance, states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It simply is. And yet, you take it in, and you annihilate it. Anything that touches you ceases to exist.”

There’s something profound in that, but you’ll never be able to get to the bottom of it; all you understand is the horror of it. And now, in the graveyard with your stocking covered knees in the dirt, all you can do is dry heave from the incredible stress your body has just gone through, the coal hot feeling in your chest, sobbing as Suguru strokes your back, assures you that you’re doing okay, everything is okay.

You cling to his sleeve, sitting there on someone's tomb as you come down from the fear. He huddles you against his chest, cupping your cheek, stroking your temple, his touch so delicate it feels like a mirage, like you’ll open your eyes and he’ll be gone.

“They want me to be like you,” you murmur. The words are muffled by the fabric of his uniform, barely audible. “I can’t, Suguru.”

“They don’t matter,” he tells you, voice just as soft. “What do you want?”

He’s so kind to you — do you deserve it? If he weren’t here, you’d still be huddled on the ground, but alone. You think of the day you met, how he held you, just like this. You think of his back, consumed by midnight-dark ink.

“I don’t know,” you lie. “I have to think about it.”

You don’t go to school that day.

Suguru promises to take you anywhere, do anything for you. But all you really want right now is a snack and a nap.

You end up in a convenience store, a little hole in the wall, with a clerk that doesn’t even look up when you enter.

You grab items without discrimination, whatever you think you could stomach. Suguru takes it all from you dutifully, filling a basket for the two of you. He leaves you to creep toward the back of the shop, where the premade meals are.

You drift through the candy aisle, aimlessly, peering at the brightly colored packaging, not taking in any of it. You find yourself staring at one in particular, attention caught like a fish on a line.

Salted watermelon Kit-kat. You try to imagine it, dissect the flavor in your mind. But your exhaustion-addled brain just can’t put it together. Suguru appears beside you, eventually. He gives you another minute to contemplate, before he takes pity on you, grabbing it off the shelf and dumping it in the basket.

He pays and the two of you take your haul to a nearby park, setting the overburdened plastic bag between you. You sift through it all, still too tired to make a decision, and finally you gesture to Suguru to figure it out for you.

Your soulmate pays you a quiet huff of laughter, unwrapping an onigiri, and holding it up for you to take a bite.

He feeds you like that, for the rest of your meal. Holding things up for you to take tiny bites from, flicking crumbs from your lips.

The Kit-kat is last, and the taste is something you can’t quite pin down. It tastes nothing, or something without a name. As soon as you swallow, you forget the particulars of it.

“How do you do it?” you ask.

He hums in question, breaking off another segment of the kitkat for you. You don’t take it, staring at it suspended between you.

“Just… keep going?”

“You don’t have to worry about that,” he murmurs, pressing the wafer against your lips. You open, instinctively, letting him place it against your tongue, chewing at the gentle urging of his fingers against your jaw.

You can barely keep your eyes open at this point. You’re not sure what to make of his expression, halfway between tenderness and agony. You hate it. You wish he would just smile at you, not with any second meaning. You wish he could ever be just, only, happy.

“Let’s get you home,” he says, right before you succumb to sleep.

…

Summer has begun, and the days are long and hot. You’ve been sent out less and less by the higher ups; they’ve come to some closed-lip conclusion about you. You’re not sure what the verdict is, but you return to Jujutsu Tech on the specified days, lazing around with your soulmate until you’re dismissed.

Today, you arrive during an impromptu practice, Gojo and Suguru sparring outside, under the blistering sun.

You consider leaving them to it, but Shoko pulls you down beside her in the tall grass, and you find yourself mesmerized by the fight.

They’re using weapons, short, sharp blades, designed for brutal gutting. They have to pull in close to try to land hits, and the resulting scramble is savage. Sweat glints in the sunlight, flickering off their skin with each jerking stab. They wear twin expressions, teeth bared.

“They’ve been going at it for the past hour,” Shoko tells you. “No winner yet.”

“That sounds miserable,” you sigh. You pull your knees to your chest, prop your chin on them.

“They know each other too well. Know how the other will move.”

Her bored expression betrays her observations. She’s not a fighter; her future lies in her cursed ability. But she understands bodies, can read them like a private lexicon.

She does the same to you, taking note of things and pretending she isn’t. This is just the way of jujutsu sorcerers, you’ve found. There are no secrets. Everyone knows too much about everyone. They know too much about you, too.

You say, “That sounds miserable too.”

The day steams around you, swollen with the hum of cicadas and the quiet slash of the blades. Sorcerers are unusually quiet when they fight, few noises of effort, or pain. They don’t project their movements, either, everything seems to happen spontaneously, without warning.

It’s unsettling to watch, at the best of times. You feel like if you’re not concentrating, either one of the boys could disappear into thin air.

You suppose a person would need to have intimate knowledge of them, to be able to survive a fight like this. They’re deadly, you’ve been told. The strongest.

Even watching them like this, in the artificial danger of a spar, that’s clear. There’s something synchronous between them. An accord of power, of intensity. They’re almost the same person, functioning on a resonance lost to anyone but them. Equally indomitable, their fight a tightrope walk.

This, whatever is happening between them, seems almost necessary, on some bizarre, universal level.

“You’re holding back,” Gojo calls. His voice is hoarse. His glasses have slipped down his nose, revealing narrowed eyes.

“No, I’m not,” Suguru returns, wiping the sweat from his upper lip.

They’re worn, beaten. A handful of mild cuts have been exchanged, but nothing that really bleeds.

“Then you’re distracted,” Gojo snaps.

Suguru says nothing to that. Just cocks his head, gives him a placating smile. He gestures to continue, lowering himself into a readied crouch.

Gojo scowls.

There’s movement. A flash of something, silver and fluid like river water in the sun. Then darkness.

You don’t register what’s happened until it’s already over. You, laid flat on the grass. Suguru, arched over you, one arm curled protectively around your head. He’s panting, so close you can feel it against your forehead. You can see the sweat beading on his own.

And a knife, embedded in his shoulder, blood already darkening his uniform.

It would have killed you, had it made its mark.

Shoko whistles. “Fast, Suguru, even for you.”

He’s looking at you like he’s surprised, too. Like he wasn’t the one who pitched you to the ground.

You’re adrenaline-confused, all turned around, and without thinking, you reach for the knife, intending to pull it out, to fix it. Suguru pulls away before you can, climbing off you.

“It’s fine,” he says. You barely catch it. He’s already begun to walk away. “I’ll go get cleaned up.”

Shoko walks you home.

You’d prefer to be alone, but she insists, chattering about a show she’s been watching as you two amble along.

“Y’know,” she says, as your apartment complex comes into view. “Suguru is a master of hand to hand combat.”

There’s meaning to that, but you’re too tired to decipher it. You stop, in the shadow of a highrise, just a few buildings away from your own. You turn to her. “Gojo almost killed me,” you say.

“But he didn’t.” Shoko reaches into her uniform jacket, pulls out a box of Seven Stars, lights one. “That’s the thing about jujutsu sorcerers. We’re always almost dead. Walking limbo. Living ghosts.”

“I’m not a sorcerer,” you remind her.

“Mmm,” she hums, taking a long drag. “But you’re protected by one.”

“He wouldn’t have to, if everyone would just leave me alone.”

“Do you love him?”

You glare, at that. “Suguru is my friend.”

She hums, barely registering your response. She’s looking at the looming building, where your apartment sits on the fifth floor, already lit. Glowing in the fading light. Your mother’s cooking dinner in there. She’ll probably nag you about college applications, when you get in.

“You could be stronger,” Shoko says. “I could teach you. I think our techniques are pretty similar, actually.”

“I don’t want to be stronger.”

Her gaze is dark, austere. Not judging or pitying, just observing. Searching for something in your unhappy expression. “Is that your decision to make?”

She releases a billow of smoke, and it fades into the twilight air like a watercolor stroke. You want to ask her if it makes it easier, the vices. You wonder if Suguru has any weaknesses, ashamed that all that comes to mind is you.

You turn on your heel, heading for your building. “Goodnight, Shoko,” you say.

…

It’s become your habit to sneak off campus, grab the most bizarre snacks you can find. The two of you split them on some park bench somewhere, trying to get as far away from Jujutsu Tech as possible each time. It becomes a game, almost. How much distance can you steal before someone calls you back.

Your mind is always on the future, these days. Graduation is fast approaching, and you’re not quite sure what to do with yourself. Suguru assures you that whatever choice you make, he’ll support you. But you catch the glint in his eye, speculative and wary. He wants something from you, your decisions, your life path. You just don’t know what.

Today the two of you hunker down in a favorite spot of yours. A tiny park, that amounts to a small square of grass, two benches, a sand box. It’s shrouded on either side by a curtain of trees, giving some approximation of privacy. It’s easy to pretend that you’re alone, together, like this.

A single dove patters around on the pavement before you, plucking at the ground in search of food. You peer at it as Suguru fusses over you, trying to adjust the things you’ve been too tired to keep track of.

Keeping a nice appearance has been low on your agenda lately. Suguru doesn’t care how you look — he’s seen you at your worst, and never batted an eye — but he rarely sits still in your presence. Always looking for something to fix, to soothe.

“It’s too much,” you sigh, leaning against him on the bench as he makes an attempt at straightening your crumpled uniform.

“What is?” he asks, giving up on trying to set you to rights. He pauses with a finger hooked in your collar, his skin shockingly warm against your own.

“Me,” you say, smiling, trying to soften the weight of the statement. “All of this. It’s a lot.”

Another finger slips into your collar. He’s tugging slightly, like it's a leash, like he’s afraid you’re going to bolt. You reach up, grab his wrist. You press him even tighter against you, keeping him there.

“You’re mine,” he says. You glance up, expecting a grin, sardonic, sly. But his expression is more open than you’ve ever seen it, the sincerity of it almost petrifying.

You’re saved from having to answer him by the ringing of his phone. He’s being called back — the two of you have reached the end of the line, today.

…

You’re sent out on a mission today, for the first time in weeks. You go without question. All of this has become mundane, routine. But —

It takes less than a second. Your body doesn’t react quick enough, and something sinks its teeth into your calf, wrenching a scream from you. Suguru is there immediately. Blinded to his own safety.

You don’t see what gets him.

All you see is the blood.

It bursts from him in a high arc, dousing you, spattering your hair, your face. You taste it, to your dawning horror, a metallic tang that you’ll never quite be able to forget.

You watch him collapse in a big heap. Not even a controlled fall, just a thump against the pavement, no preservative gesture to it. Then he’s just laying there.

Gone, you think, he’s gone.

There’s too much blood for it to mean anything else. But Gojo is still moving, killing swift and efficiently, hosting Suguru over his shoulder with one arm, snagging you by the hair at your nape with the other.

“Hurry up, dead weight,” he snaps at you, and you’re running.

Shoko brings him back from the brink of death. Almost kills herself too, in the process. It was a deep cut, right where his shoulder meets the muscle of his arm. The entire limb was almost amputated, and if that had happened there would be no way to reattach it.

It’s bad enough, as it is. Suguru looks ghostly as he lays on the morgue table, where they’d dumped him in preparation for his death. Part of you thinks he really is dead, but Gojo is there beside you, acting like nothing is amiss.

“That was rough,” he says, arms crossed, leaned against the brick wall. “Didn’t think he would just take the hit like that.”

You try to tune out the giant beside you, approaching the table on trembling legs. You brush some of the hair from Suguru’s face, but he doesn’t stir.

“What happened?” Gojo asks.

“I don’t know,” you tell him. You bite your lip, trying to piece together the fragments of the attack. You remember your skin being clammy with fear, your heart hammering in your chest. But that was all after. When you were holding Suguru, limp in your arms. “I wasn’t afraid until it was too late.”

“Desensitized,” Gojo says. He peers at you over the rim of his glasses, the color electric, startling. “You trust him too much.”

Your fingers trail down to Suguru’s throat. You find the artery there, feel for his pulse. It’s faint.

And just centimeters away, the apex of the wound.

It’s all scar tissue, now that Shoko is done with him, but it's still slightly horrifying to witness. It’s a mean scar, jagged and fissured, branching out like a lightning strike as it snakes through him. It tears through his back, too, interrupting the sea of soulmarks with fresh, brutalized skin.

Atlas, you think, hand hovering over the torn flesh. The weight of the world on his shoulders.

Behind you, Gojo sighs. “Are you gonna make a decision,” he calls, “or are you just gonna feel him up?”

You linger, just a moment more. Taking in his face, serene now that he can’t put his mask up. Your fingers brush up against his pulse again, just making sure.

Then you leave Jujutsu Tech. You do not return.

Ironically, it’s you Suguru thinks of, when he’s cradling the Star Plasma Vessel’s corpse.

When he’s standing over Yuu Haibara’s grave.

When he’s making the decision to let that village of scum live, to take the girls and run.

They’re his soulmates too, all of them. They tell him each time, eyes full of stars, grinning so wide. So fucking trusting.

But it’s only you he thinks of, when the rage fills him up like a boiling pot, and he can feel death at his fingertips like it might slip from his grasp if he’s not paying attention.

I don’t know, you told him. But I don’t think it’s this.

No matter how things fall apart around him, there’s no coming back from that kind of betrayal. So he reins in his bloodthirst, tamps down the aggression.

He loves you more than he could possibly hate anything.

And he’ll scour the world until he finds you.

I will be buying my first car soon and I have a few choices to pick from. I'll have to pay for everything myself (insurance, fuel, maintenance, etc.). I'm trying to narrow my choices by choosing between a 2005 Mustang v6 (has 50k miles and is an auto :c) and a 2004 Mustang v6 (has 80K miles and is a manual c:). I found both of these cars at an auction site I'll be going to with my father next week (he's mechanically inclined lol truck driver) and I'm nervous since it's likely I won't be able to check for many issues other then auto check.
