since the second season is coming up, thinking lately about how snb fumbles a lot with race, and how leigh bardugo said something along the lines of how borders are constantly shifting to explain jessie mei li's casting.

like it's so frustrating how since ravka is obviously analogous to russia. and since borders are constantly shifting, why on earth would alina be othered the way she is? russia is pretty multi ethic with a long complex history, and there are many who look east asian who are just considered plain russain. they could've just made her be othered due to her being an orphan. like it's enough.

like inej is ravkan and it's never really commented(in her books at least) how her community is in sparse numbers. like if anything there seemed to a thriving community who travels within the country. so why would seeing someone who looks like alina be so uncommon?

the show honestly making up new slurs and using art based on 1940s u.s yellow peril proganda(like if anything ravka is the u.s) to show how unwelcomed someone like alina is. I personally don't mind when fantasy media decide to show their characters of colour experience marginalisation, but if pain is the only thing they experience due to their race, not community or anything else. I feel it's very telling of the writer's room and how they see people of colour.
