Destiny by Blood
Constant rush of footsteps outside their containment, guards running back and forth, every which way. Black eyes find watch on the group more often now, Selkie’s nerves twitching every time that stare finds its mark on the kitsune. After several minutes of contemplation, she finally rises from her spot by the wall, taking a seat next to the most familiar face that could afford her company.
“Lady Azura?”
The formalities may be unnecessary, but when the unfamiliar sensation of fear racks her soul, the kitsune who still finds herself a child amidst company might revert to old habits.
“You... you heard what he said, right? I don’t know what to do. I think the others escaped,” Thoughts race, forming and swirling amidst the wariness that has beset her being, “and we still don’t know what he wants to do with us. Solon seems really angry - do you think they’ll take us somewhere else? Or maybe when they get here, he’ll...”
A single fang pierces her lip, and she shakes the thought from her head. Conjecture and fear won’t help now, yet despite every rational thought, the feeling still permeated everywhere, and to say she didn’t like it was quite the understatement.
“Are we gonna be okay?”

"And you—" When her berating of Lorenz is finished, she turns on Selkie. "I have watched you corner enemies on the battlefield and instead I see you deciding to go along with this half-baked plan. You are just as much at fault as Lorenz." A huff. She's mad, and she doesn't want to linger on this subject any longer. "Selkie, I trust you. Use your head. Think things through next time." A pause, and she adds, "The next time you see a guard, tell me right away. I'll ask for medicine."
Selkie knew what was coming before Azura even turned. The palms of her hands and the soles of her feet took the worst of the burn, though it wasn’t much compared to Lorenz - but her pride was what took the most damage. She’d disappointed Lady Azura - how could she?
After all, Azura was right - she was a seasoned fighter, clever and calculating in battle. How did she not know where this was going? Her ears twitched and drooped for just a moment, eyes sunk in her face, though nearly instantly she perked back up to her usual self. “You’re right. I wasn’t thinking clearly, it’s my fault.”
Only slightly dejected, the kitsune plops down onto her rear once more, leaning the side of her head against the door and gazing out as she did so.

♪ You are the ocean’s gray waves… ♪
From behind a nearby tree, Selkie stared in awe. The Lady of the Lake, Azura - her father spoke very highly of her, and Selkie just had to meet her. Her voice was so soft, though, and the kitsune couldn’t bring herself to move from her spot behind her tree.
She’d never been nervous before. It was a weird feeling, and Selkie did not like it. She’d felt fear only a few times, and those were times she didn’t care to think about - but nerves failing, anxiety, those feelings were new and uncomfortable.
Something about this maiden was off, however, despite her captivating voice and lovely appearance. This feeling of unease, it rose within, keeping her feet planted firmly in the ground, even as the singing stopped, even as Azura turned and left, Selkie couldn’t find the strength to move until she was long gone.
Captivating, but there was something behind the mask. Selkie was determined to find out what.
