Meet the Muse
I was tagged by @slothssassin. Thank you so much! Sorry it took a bit for me to get to this. I’m also tagging @bronzeagelove, @trash-effect, and @katajanokka, but only if you want.
Guess who it is..... It’s Wash!
Tumblr media
|| The Basics ||
Name: Charles Washington
Nickname(s): Wash
Age: 28-29
Species: Human
Alignment: Chaotic good, perhaps tending towards Chaotic Neutral at times
|| Personal ||
Religious Belief: None
(I can’t remember how the bold/italics thing works so italics is kinda, bold is for sure. I don’t know if that’s right or now but it’s what I’m doing.)
Sins: Lust / Greed / Gluttony / Sloth / Pride / Envy / Wrath
Virtues: Chastity / Charity / Diligence / Humility / Kindness / Patience / Justice
Primary Goals In Life: Not die. He wasn’t really strong on goals before the vault opened and now it’s just trying to make the most of this mess.
Languages Known: English, some Spanish and French because he thought it would make him seem extra sexy and suave
Secrets: He’s more insecure than he lets on and worries more about other people, especially his dad, than most people realize. He tries not to come across as too “soft,” he has a cool guy image to maintain.
Quirks: Doesn’t really like Nuka products, they’re fine but he doesn’t see what the big deal is. Absently sings along with the radio, even when he’s out wandering in Appalachia. If he’s just hanging out around his camp, he wears jumpsuits like PJs and is going commando underneath, it’s less laundry to worry about later. Dislikes power armor because it wrinkles his clothes and messes up his hair.
Savvies: High charisma (not as a stat in game but in general), he’s good at talking to people and smoothing things over. Has more of a knack for making things than he realized prior to leaving the vault. Sucks at growing crops but does pretty good with houseplants. Guns are ok but hitting things with sharp objects is generally more effective and efficient.
|| Physical ||
Build: Slender / Scrawny / Bony / Fit / Athletic / Herculean / Babyfat / Pudgy / Obese / Other (please imagine a Tom Hiddleston physique, trim but there’s muscle)
Height: 6 feet even (not including his hair, at least 6′4″ with the hair)
Weight: 185 lbs?
Scars/Birthmarks: The long one on the far left side of his face came from rough housing in the vault, he ended up falling into a sharp piece of metal. The one over his left eye is from a mongrel dog shortly after leaving the vault. He underestimated the pack and ended up getting knocked to the ground with a claw to the face. Lots of small scars everywhere from working on things around his camp.
Abilities/Powers: Handy with electronic things, good at talking through tense situations, swings a mean ski sword, looks dashing in a suit, adapts surprisingly well to being alone all the time
Restrictions: Tries to ignore insecurities instead of dealing with them, increased frustration and anger since finding out how terrible everything is in in Appalachia, could potentially become too comfortable with being alone and not want to interact with others at all, tendency towards depression, especially right after leaving the vault. Not super great at fighting things given how long he’s been out in Appalachia, but he’s getting better.
|| Favorites ||
Favorite Food: brahmin ribeye, corn soup on cold days, blackberry anything, dandy boy apples
Favorite Drink: Beer (any), melon juice, sweetwater tea (cold if possible)
Favorite Color: green and blue
Favorite Music Genre: Rockabilly, Swing, Pop. Basically anything you can dance to.
Favorite Book Genre: Unstoppables comics, has a recent fondness for instruction manuals, textbooks and science-y stuff, but honestly he’ll read just about anything to pass to the time.
Favorite Movie Genre: Action, Science fiction
Favorite Season: late summer/early fall when things are still green but it isn’t a million degrees outside, the humidity is lower and he can spend time on the porch without having to fight off stingwings.
Favorite Butt Type: A nice round one with a little bit of muscle tone but still squishy for grabbing.
Favorite Swear Word: I think some variant of Jesus Christ comes out a lot
Favorite Scent: fresh laundry, fruit jam, apples
Favorite Quote: “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”  Oscar Wilde (I kinda picked a quote at random, seems applicable enough)
|| Fun Stuff ||
“Boss” Theme Music: In his mind, the Avengers theme, explosions in the background, Wash walking away looking like a badass. This is basically never the case in reality, not even close.
Loud Burper Or Soft Burper: Loud / Soft / Neither
Sings In The Shower: Yes / No
Likes Bad Puns: Yes / No / Only if they are relevant to the situation (Wash’s dad was all about the dad jokes, he grudgingly accepted them then, he misses them a lot now)

🎵 - Theme music
Tumblr media
Main Verse: Inon Zur - Fenris Theme
Wild, pure, and yet, far from forever free. The indomitable supplicant to a silent god of cacophonous obliteration. By alms of virtue, and devotion towards all that come before, he serves. Loyalty before survival.
Tumblr media
WoL Verse: Pillars of Eternity: The White March OST - Stalwart Village
Servant of the Twelve, Blessed of Hydaelyn, and fated to suffer. The undying flesh that abuses the presence of his enemy for the sake of his creed. By unfortunate fate, and shackles of a second soul that refuses to let him earn his final rest, he serves. Survival before loyalty.

Hour of Devastation Commander Set Review
For each new set, I write an article discussing the new legendary creatures and the nonlegendary cards that I think will be relevant in Commander.
In this set review, I’ll be using two five-point rating scales to evaluate the nonlegendary cards, one that measures how many decks a card is playable in (we’ll call that “spread”), and one that measures how powerful it is in those decks (”power”). Here’s a brief rundown of what each rank on the two scales means:
Spread
1: This card is effective in one or two decks, but no more (ex: The Gitrog Monster). 2: This card is effective in one deck archetype (ex: self-mill decks). 3: A lot of decks will be able to use this card effectively (ex: decks with graveyard interactions). 4: This card is effective in most decks in this color. 5: Every deck in this color is able to use this card effectively.
Power
1: This card is always going to be on the chopping block. 2: This card is unlikely to consistently perform well. 3: This card provides good utility but is not a powerhouse. 4: This card is good enough to push you ahead of your opponents. 5: This card has a huge impact on the game.
The Commanders of Hour of Devastation
Tumblr media
There are only a couple of really strong planeswalkers in Djeru’s limited color identity, but White has some decent ways to protect them, including some great board wipes.
In the maindeck:
Spread: 2
Power: 2
In non-Black Superfriends decks, Djeru might be useful as an additional copy of Call the Gatewatch. In Black lists, your other tutors are so efficient that there’s no reason to run him.
Tumblr media
Most tribal commander merely bump borderline creatures into playability, but Unesh is a singularly powerful tribal commander whose abilities can justify cards that would normally never see play in this format. An Unesh deck is pretty straightforward: you start with some mana acceleration to help you get Unesh onto the field ASAP, add in every Sphinx ever printed (and a few honorary Sphinxes), toss in a few pieces of tech, and round out the deck with counterspells and a few other Blue staples.
Sample list
In the maindeck:
Spread: 5
Power: 3
If your deck was already running Sphinx of Uthuun, then you might consider making room for this dude.
Tumblr media
Will probably see more play as one of the 99 in reanimator builds than as a Commander, since a Razaketh deck seems like it’d be pretty boring; once you figure out the fastest way to assemble a combo (such as Mike & Trike or Bloody Blood), that’ll be the default route you take every time. From there, the games will start to feel pretty same-y.
In the maindeck:
Spread: 4
Power: 5
The bar for running this guy is essentially “does your deck have creatures in it?” If you can feed him two creatures, you’re very likely to win the game. More, and it’s a certainty.
Tumblr media
Neheb’s mana generation is unparalleled in monored, turning efficient burn spells into insanely strong rituals. Check this article I wrote about him for a decklist and explanation of card choices.
In the maindeck:
Spread: 3
Power: 4
Requires you to have decent damage output and some mana sinks. If you can clear those hurdles, then Neheb will put you way ahead.
Tumblr media
The best version of the deck doesn’t lean too hard on the Zombie theme; aside from Graveborn Muse and a few of the most efficient Zombie token producers, the Scarab God builds into a stock Blue/Black control list that fills its opponents’ graveyards via counters and kill spells and then uses its commander to reanimate the juiciest targets.
Sample list
In the maindeck:
Spread: 4
Power: 2
In the maindeck, this guy seems pretty comparable to Havengul Lich, a card that isn’t exactly a format staple. Unless the exile is especially relevant in your meta, think you can skip him.
Tumblr media
It’s pretty difficult to farm his death trigger, since his activated ability is pretty inefficient and there aren’t as many efficient effects that grant -1/-1 counters as you might expect. I definitely want to test with him before I make a final verdict, but I suspect the juice might not be worth the squeeze.
Sample list
In the maindeck:
Spread: 1
Power: 1
Can’t think of a commander that really wants this effect. If you come up with something, let me know in the comments.
Tumblr media
His ability to generate tokens is insane and these are great colors for farming the draw trigger. I wrote a post about him that explains the deck and card choices in detail, so give it a read if you’re interested.
In the maindeck:
Spread: 1
Power: 4
Seems like a great win condition in Arjun. I’d also consider Nekusar, although his lists tend to be pretty tight.
The Maindeck Cards
Tumblr media
Spread: 2
Power: 2
As a blink engine, it’s definitely worse than Eldrazi Displacer, Conjurer’s Closet, Tawnos’s Coffin, and Galepowder Mage, although it might still make the cut if you don’t have access to Blue’s engines. The banishing effect is much worse than Admonition Angel’s, although that might not be a fair comparison because Admonition Angel was so pushed. Overall, I’d say if you have lots of ETB creatures and you’re monowhite, Angel of Condemnations could be worth a try. However, the more colors you add into your deck’s color identity, the more likely it is that he gets outclassed.
Tumblr media
Spread: 2
Power: 4
Ignoring the fact that Horse tribal is not a thing (yet), this is a pretty sweet reward for commanders who specialize in repeatedly gaining small amounts of life.
Tumblr media
Spread: 5
Power: 3
The effect is good in Commander, as you can often break the symmetry on this super wipe when you know it’s coming. It seems like it would be pretty easy to get the discount on this version of Planar Cleansing, which will allow you to rebuild before anyone else does.
Tumblr media
Spread: 2
Power: 4
Enchantress decks won’t mind the mana cost too much and they’ll jump at the chance to protect themselves from the guy with the biggest threats and respond proactively to Bane of Progress and other creature-based enchantment removal.
Tumblr media
Spread: 1
Power: 3
Derevi is very interested in creatures that tap to produce tokens and exert means nothing to her. I doubt anyone else is interested, though.
Tumblr media
Spread: 1
Power: 3
This is much better than most of the do-nothing Wizards currently being played in Azami decks (according to EDHREC). In addition to filling Azami’s requirement of being a warm body capable of being tapped, Champion of Wits offers card selection in the early game and card advantage in the late game.
Tumblr media
Spread: 1
Power: 2
Milling your opponents is usually not how you win a game of Commander, but there are a few self-mill commanders that could benefit from a tool like this one.
Tumblr media
Spread: 1
Power: 2
XXUUU means you’ll rarely cast this for more than two or three, and having to exile your own stuff is pretty ugly. Not sure there are any commanders that are stoked about running this card; if you think of one, let me know in the comments.
Tumblr media
Spread: 2
Power: 2
Functionally, it’s really similar to Cast Through Time, although it’s worth noting that this is much better with X spells. If you were already running Cast, you have my permission to run this; there aren’t many reasons to run one and not the other.
Tumblr media
Spread: 1
Power: 2
Seems like a great option for Alesha, since it kills something and places itself back in your graveyard for easy reuse.
Tumblr media
Spread: 2
Power: 2
Probably worth running in the -1/-1 counter commanders since the cost to run it over a swamp is pretty low. Consider making room for the new cycling deserts, while you’re at it.
Tumblr media
Spread: 4
Power: 2
3 is an unfortunate number. If it dealt 2 like Magma Giant, then Feldon would be able to recur it repeatedly. If it dealt 4, it could take out popular commanders like Zur, Atraxa, Meren, Brago, Breya, Nekusar, Karador, Yidris, etc etc. It also compares unfavorably with Thunder Dragon, since the Dragon has flying and a relevant creature type.
Tumblr media
Spread: 5
Power: 3
It’s hard to look at this card objectively since I’m personally really disappointed by it; if this dealt 6 damage, it would have been a new format staple. Still, it’s probably worth playing despite its inability to hit Titans, Sphinxes, and some of the other big threats in this format.
Tumblr media
Spread: 4
Power: 3
Getting Urborg + Coffers in B/G decks seems quite good, although most decks are going to have some combination of sweet targets. I’ve heard a bit of talk about using this to grab Dark Stage, but that seems a little goofy to me.
Tumblr media
Spread: 4
Power: 3
We all know that Crucible is sweet, so I won’t argue the merits of the ability. The main differences between this and Crucible are the Excavator’s fragility, which is balanced out by being easier to tutor out and recur. Doesn’t matter much, though; if you’ve got the manabase to support one, you should probably run the other.
Tumblr media
Spread: 4
Power: 2
It’s pretty messed up that this works at cross purposes with the demands of a good mana curve. The only value for X that seems really appealing is 3, which can grab you Reclamation Sage, Eternal Witness, and Ramunap Excavator. Every other value just seems like a raw deal.
Tumblr media
Spread: 1
Power: 1
The +1 is irrelevant and the -2 does not protect her. She’s a four-mana Chandra’s Pyrohelix.
Tumblr media
Spread: 1
Power: 4
This card seems awesome in Derevi since she loves tokens and exert is meaningless in that deck.
Tumblr media
Spread: 2
Power: 3
Especially good in Hapatra (because deathtouch). Pharika probably wants a copy even though she can’t produce tokens as efficiently as Hapatra, and Nath could be interested, as well. I think Ghave might be too busy comboing off to care and Sidisi is loath to add in noncreatures for fear of reducing her hit rate.
Tumblr media
Spread: 1
Power: 2
The quirk that makes it so strong in Melek is likely to disqualify it from being played in most other Izzet spellslinger lists.
Tumblr media
Spread: 1
Power: 3
I hate how much worse he is at protecting himself than his predecessor and I’m terrified of spinning the wheel on his +2 and hitting a mana rock or dork. Still, he’s a total monster if you untap with him, netting 6ish cards per turn when he’s not shooting down opposing Praetors and planeswalkers. Best in 5C Superfriends builds; I think Grixis control would rather run the 8-mana planeswalkers.
Tumblr media
Spread: 2
Power: 2
Aside from populate tricks with Trostani, I’m not sure there are a whole lot of good uses for this card. 7 mana and exiling your own cards are both pretty steep costs, so I think that any color with access to better reanimation will skip this. I think that mostly leaves monored decks with lots of attack triggers and colorless Eldrazi lists with lots of annihilator triggers, but even that seems pretty loose. I don’t think the ability to be fetched with Gate to the Afterlife is super relevant, as the Black decks that excel at farming nontoken death triggers have access to much better reanimation options.
Tumblr media
Spread: 2
Power: 2
Yasova Dragonclaw, Rubinia Soulsinger, and other commanders with temporary steal effects can use this to permanently exile the creatures they borrow. Just don’t crack it.
Tumblr media
Spread: 3
Power: 2
Graveyard hate that fits in any deck and doesn’t take up a land slot.
Tumblr media
Spread: 1
Power: 2
King Macar eats this shit up, but everyone else should avoid it.
Wrapping Up
Please let me know if you think I missed any relevant cards or rated some of these incorrectly and I’ll amend the post. Thanks for reading!

EDH Decks: Amonkhet Overhaul
Hello everyone! Another Magic set means another massive list of changes for many of my EDH decks! Below, I will outline some of the changes I made, as well as talk a bit about some of the new cards I think are interesting or worth using.
I hope you enjoy my musings!
Here we go!
1. Thromok, the Insatiable
I want to make more changes to this deck in the near future, so I haven’t added much yet. But for now, I added Sheltered Thicket and Vizier of the Menagerie. The thicket isn’t a particularly exciting addition by any means, but it’s kind of cool to have the entire family tree of Forest/Mountains in the deck. The vizier is a super cool card though. This is a very creature-centric deck, but I’ve found the overall CMC of the cards to be a little on the higher side. I replaced Garruk’s Horde with this card, since it does the same thing but at a much lower cost. In the longer run, I want to make this deck a little less about big stuff as my Iwamori deck becomes almost entirely about big stuff. Speaking of which...
2. Iwamori of the Open Fist
Iwamori got a lot in this set, he seems to get along really well with Rhonas and friends. First of all, obviously Rhonas himself found a place in the deck since he will always be a creature and he can pump up the commander. Good stuff. Mouth // Feed is also a really good card in mono-green I feel. I mean, the 3/3 Hippo for 3 isn’t super great or anything, but getting Feed into the graveyard so you can use it whenever you want is pretty nice. Prowling Serpopard is another card I added, but I haven’t had a chance to use it yet. It seems like a decent utility card in a deck full of creatures, particularly since I don’t have access to Vexing Shusher in this deck like I do in Thromok. It can be fetched with Woodland Bellower too, so that’s something.
Now, for a couple cards I’m not completely sold on. Rhonas’s Monument was super wreck in sealed, so I figured I’d give it a shot. It makes my creatures cheaper, so that’s good. It also pumps my commander. Again, not bad. I feel like it should make the cut, but I haven’t used it yet. Finally, I also added Champion of Rhonas, kind of on a whim. I really want to make attacking more important to the deck since people in my playgroup rarely attack if they don’t plan to win the game by doing it, and this seems like a pretty good card for that. I dunno, I had the foil version from the prerelease. I wanted to use it.
3. Melek, Izzet Paragon
Yeah, my green decks got the most from this set. Just one thing here: Commit // Memory. Really, I’m surprised I don’t see more talk about this card. Commit is a pseudo-counterspell as well as nonland permanent  removal. I mean... that sounds great! I like it a lot. Memory is less exciting, but it’s a solid card to cast from a graveyard. All in all I like this card a lot, but somehow I didn’t even know it existed until I got one in a prize pack.
4. Atraxa, Praetor’s Voice
I’m still trying to get this deck to work well. It looks nice. I enjoy the whole aesthetic of the deck. But, it doesn’t really compete super well with the decks my friends run. However, Amonkhet seems to have just the cards that I need: cards that give free stuff! More specifically, cards that give free stuff that are based on counters! As Foretold and Oracle’s Vault are perfect for this deck, so I’m really looking forward to trying them out. I also added Bounty of the Luxa because I think it’s a cool card, and I could always use a bit more card draw/mana. It might go out of the deck later, but for now it’s there.
5. Karona, False God
This isn’t Alara, so 5-colour matters isn’t a theme that pops up often. Having said that, this set has Cascading Cataracts. It’s not a particularly good card, but I have a foil one. I dunno, I could see it maybe being useful if Chromatic Lantern isn’t in play. Possibly. It just looks pretty, okay?
6. Zur de France (Zur the Enchanter)
This deck is getting a lot of goodies, but it’s still a work in progress. Lots of cycling going on. Stay tuned for a deck list eventually!
And yeah, I think that’s it for cards I’m using. Of course, there are other good cards that I think are worth mentioning:
Sandwurm Convergence looks pretty good in a green deck, and I am considering it. The best thing about it is the fact that you actually get a wurm on the turn you play it, so it starts paying off right away. It’s a 5/5 tied to a Gravity Well for 8 mana that keeps generating more 5/5s. Sounds good if you can ramp to it well enough.
Glorious End is a funny card that I’m sure a silly mono-red deck out there somewhere will enjoy.
Samut, Voice of Dissent is a really weird card, and I personally hate that she has White in her activated ability. She’s better as a general that way, but it also means that I can’t use her as a Haste engine in Thromok. What a shame. For me.
Harsh Mentor looks like a card that will get a lot of use in some formats. Turns off a lot of combos, so it’s something to use if those are running rampant in your meta.
Annointed Procession looks really good. I don’t have a White token deck to use it in, but I’m sure it will become a staple in many of them. Can’t complain about as colour-shifted Parallel Lives.
Nissa, Steward of Elements looks super good. Might even find room for her in Atraxa. Probably should, actually.
Pyramid of the Pantheon is a card I really like, but I just have nowhere to put it. It’s a build-your-own Gilded Lotus, but I have no reason to use it over an actual Gilded Lotus. Even in Atraxa, I’d rather use Prismatic Geoscope. It’s a shame too, because I really think it’s a cool card. I mean, Gilded Lotus isn’t very cheap though, and the Pyramid is like a bulk rare. That should help it find a place in a lot of decks out there.
Heaven // Earth is another card that slipped by under my radar. It’s two board wipes in one. Can’t go wrong there.
Reduce // Rubble is a card I mention not because I think it’s good, but because of how disappointed I am in it. It’s fine for what it is, but I was reeeeealllyyy looking forward to the R/U split card for Melek, and I got this. Why is Rubble so... underwhelming? With a name like Reduce to Rubble, you’d think it would at least destroy a land, not just ice a couple down. Ugh.
Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons looks like a sick general. One of my friends is building a deck around her. I even might have if he didn’t.
Liliana, Death’s Majesty looks really good in a reanimator deck. I like her a lot. Not sure what else there is to say about her, she’s just a solid planeswalker.
Cut // Ribbons looks pretty good. Exsanguinate is used in a lot of decks, so if you are also running Red, might as well use this one as well. It’s removal on one hand, and a win-con on the other. Pretty solid.
And, that’s that. If you made it this far, I congratulate you! I hope you enjoyed what you read! I do enjoy talking about Magic cards, even if it means writing these long posts that people may or may not read.
