Dalbert is the one who gave Almer his name after rescuing him as a child and, similarly, the cur loves to call him 'pup'; usually 'my pup' or 'dear pup', a habit of Dalbert's that embarrassed Almer the older he got but it's also something he'll cling to in moments of extreme emotion or distress. If he's in a heightened state of emotion it will make him cry which usually helps him to calm down.

Being called 'pup' and 'son' by Dalbert is just another reminder that he's finally been accepted by someone after all, and even if he kicks up a bit of a fuss around others Almer still loves that his father calls him so. It reminds him of his place, his family, and that means the world to Almer.

Almer has a hard time sleeping in complete silence, he's far too used to (and draws comfort from) the squeaking of the blackwagon wheels, the low voice of his father telling one of his many stories and the rattling, clanking and tinkling of the various effigies, trinkets, relics, and so on that are on display in the wagon so if any of these sounds are predominantly absent Almer can be rather restless.

Likewise he's hyper sensitive to Dalbert when he's asleep and he always has one eye and ear open for the cur. If his father is restless or gets up often for whatever reason (generally his bones ache but it could be other things as well) Almer will also be up and end up mothering the old dog, albeit affectionately and with great care.

Dalbert for his part will insist that his son get as much rest as possible (and will throw his weight if need be) but a small part of him also appreciates and enjoys the attention.
