Quiet Vigilantism

On occasion, Takane reflected on her work, especially when a thug actually managed to get a shot in on her. Why was she a vigilante, actually? The topic came up again as she wiped blood from the corner of her mouth.

By day, Takane was a fashion model, and a popular one at that. She adorned the covers of a number of magazines for a reason. She had no need to do anything risky like this to make a living, nor did she take money for it anyway. So, why?

Because it was doing something about the rampant levels of violent crime that the police weren’t doing anything about. Muggings and various types of assaults; the proliferation of illegal weaponry or narcotics; organised crime by groups that resembled mafia or yakuza types; it was all here. She was a vigilante because by her hand - or staff, usually -- thugs who didn’t hesitate to hurt people could feel a very real physical punishment for dong it. And...

... Because Takane found it fun. She couldn’t deny it, the adrenaline rush of the danger, the good feeling when she saved someone’s life or good health.

The last part in particular is why she’s in this particular alleyway, blood dripping down her hardwood staff, a quartet of battered thugs unconscious around her. The person these thugs were threatening had elected to run away, at some point. Takane’s hard panting was slowing. Except for the one shot to the face, she herself was unharmed, any bladed weaponry quickly knocked out of hands with the long reach of her staff. Still, that was going to bruise - best not taking any modelling jobs for a few days...

After a moment to calm, Takane supposed it was perhaps best for her to leave too. But before she could go...
