AMATA WAS SOUTH IN THE ALBION MAINLAND. It was sea locked on two sides. Her Navy had blocked the Saxons from the North. They had nowhere to run and nowhere to get reinforcements. She prided herself on that notion, the knowledge that it could easily sway anyone to their cause. "I fear she doesn't have the sea on her side, and her Saxon invaders are cut off from help from their motherland. My navy made sure of it. We hold that ground, as does Annis navy also." That truth alone made her smile slightly to herself. It was a matter of time until Morgana learned about the blockade.

The Queen was grateful about having the maps so she could travel safely. This area of the midland, she was not too aware of what lurked. It had been off limits as a child, and it was tales of creatures lurking in wait that did not allow just anyone to travel through the ice lands. The mountain ranges alone were impressive. She had never seen a sight in her life. Amnell had soaked in the view of the mountain caps and the cold, crisp air. Despite the fear of the vampires, she felt like she could stay there forever. "She was wronged, but it's not Arthur's doing. He tried to help her before he took Camelot from his father. She was too far gone by then. Her hatred ran too thick. It makes me sad to see what is left of the priestesses of old, if she represents them."

Nodding, she put aside the wine once more and looked into the flames. "Amata is more than open to such ideals, and so is Camelot. I know Annis kingdom would be on board. The old Five Kingdoms is nothing but a tale now gone. Arthur made sure anyone that supported Uther was not aligned with Camelot. I am afraid the King of Cornwall is going to learn the hard way if he doesn't see the errors in his ways." Looking over, she gauged her for a moment before looking away. Leaning into her chair, she had made sure to have dressed for the cold. Kahlan's breath could be seen every time she exhaled.

"I feel the same way honestly. The spirits of my people linger. They speak to the ways of the old and they all say that peace is needed before ruin comes. Pagan beliefs are none too different from my own. I've seen what the Triple Goddess is capable. I was supposedly a daughter of prophecy, being the Seeker. Such is a heavy burden, but I take the mantle trying to do my best to maintain was is just and true. I would hate to see either of our peoples burn because of Morgana. Differences aside, I don't wish that fate of anyone." Seeing as the leader got up herself to tend to the fire, she couldn't help the respect she felt from her. It was mutual and that she was very thankful of.

Adjusting the fur on her shoulders, she made sure her long coat was still against her to ward the cold out. "That would work in our favor since majority of their attacks are during the day. They sleep or get drunk most nights. It's the only reprieve we get from the constant attacks." Her fingers went into the sleeves of her coat. So she could give her hands a break. The gloves were a gift from Arthur and were fur lined. Even with them, they grew cold after awhile. "I try to be. I only heard stories of the Seeker when I was a child. Every Seeker had been male up until me and its been over a hundred years since the last one. I don't know sometimes if I am deserving of such honor, but take it gratefully."

              “Well, the order of Confessors is matriarchal. To put it simply.” The first confessor after all had been a woman, and while male confessors, while not a rarity, were still vastly outnumbered. Strangers were not uncommon at the Confessor’s Palace, most were either so nervous they could hardly speak, or there was fear in their eyes when they were left alone with her or one of her fellow confessors. His complete lack of either caught her attention. “I come to take it, you have not had many dealings with Confessors then?”

TMI: What fictional character or real world people inspired this character?

It's a bit of a mix. The original idea for Rian stemmed from the RP I had when I played her mother. So I pulled traits from her IC parents and when thinking of who that might be like I came to Kahlan Amnell from Sword of Truth/Legen of the Seeker. Thus where I got her FC. Just happens that later Bridget Regan's role of Sasha on the Last Ship is also a good fit for Rian's personality. Most comes from building on a previous story and letting her growing her own way through the new stories that developed.

About half way through, and it's so god damn painful with these god awful British accents. The monotone narrator in book 2 was 8000% more tolerable than this old weeb

Narrator is an over dramatic tool, he doesn't know the names. He makes Richard sound like some wanker private detective from a 50's movie that only speaks through gritted teeth, and all women in this mans mind speak like simpletons. If you like this series find this book somewhere else. Total disappointment.

Big Sword of Truth fan but am terribly disappointed in this audiobook. About halfway through now. The story is fine but the narrator is very poor. He has obviously not listened to previous recordings and mis-pronounces names of major characters. Kalen, KAY-len as fans know her, sounds like Colin and he even changes the stress at times throughout the book calling her CoLIN. He uses cheesy "Oliver-ish" old English stereotypes for certain characters while other characters retain an American accent. Sorry to rail-on about the narrator but It's really so bad that I'm considering just reading the synopsis and moving on to another book. Very, Very poor indeed. I gave the book a 2 only because the story is fine. I would give the narrator a zero if I could.

I agree wholeheartedly with the first reviewer. When you're a fan of a story having the characters names mispronounced is rather irritating. I am a regular audio book listener and poor narrating is a difficult thing to get past in a story you would otherwise love.

She remembers the first storm after being rescued from her father, she and Dennee had stayed up almost all night watching it pass.            She blinks, almost surprised. Less that Cara considers her family, a part of Kahlan always seemed to know that; Cara had proved that she had cared with her actions. What surprised her was the fact Cara had come right out and said it. The Mord-Sith could be blunt and brash but when it came to expressing emotions, that was something more alike to Kahlan.           She can’t remember exactly what she had been saying, clearly nothing important. They had been dancing around unsaid words for some time now. Toying on the line but never actually crossing it. She was a strong woman, in every sense of the term, yet matters of the heart made her hesitant to voice them. Not that she doubted Simon’s honor, but power could be so tempting to so many. And her’s had to be carefully guarded. Kahlan barely registered him moving across the room until he was right in front of her taking her face between her hands. Her words are lost as green hues are locked with his dark ones. There’s a moment of stillness, perhaps an allowance for her to pull away should she so choose, but she doesn’t.

            At last he leans down to kiss her. The kiss started soft and gentle, but grew hungrier and more heated as all the things that had gone unsaid were poured into it. Kahlan returned it all in kind. Oh there were things she wanted to say but most could be said now in this moment, in this kiss. Finally she pulls back needing a moment to catch the breath he had stolen from her. Her cheeks full of color, green hues bright. She leans up, gives him another kiss, sweet and delicate.  “Will you be extending your stay then?”

          Touch, it was still strange for her, sometimes she still had the urge to pull back, or lash out. Though he never seemed bothered by it, when he did see fractions of those moments. Now she did not flinch when he reached out, dare she admit it she found herself craving it, the simplest act of affection that she had never realized she had been missing. The sun would brighten the sky before long, but for now the world was still in slumber. Her hair normally pulled from her face hung loose around her shoulders, as always dressed in white, the symbol of her status and position. 

          She felt his presence long before he drew up next to her by the window. She felt herself drawing closer to him until she was nearly pressed against him. Her hands on his chest, one of his around her waist the other in the soft tresses of her hair, his forehead resting against her own. For several moments she allowed herself to melt into the touch, before she pulled back, though she did not break the gentle hold he had of her. “I did not take you to be the sort of man to be up before the sun.”

          “You cannot lie to a confessor.” While her expression is stern, her tone is rather gentle. This wasn’t a cold fact, there were some she simply couldn’t read but Kahlan doubted the girl before her counted as one of those few. “So would you like to try again?” There’s a soft smile. While Kahlan is trying to get across the message she should not be messed with, she wasn’t cruel.
