sumiye + her quirk
at its core, sumiye’s quirk acts as a fast-acting antidepressant-- she is able to force a person’s body to produce serotonin at levels that affect the brain in a quick manner without overwhelming the body with an overload of serotonin. in other words, she can make people feel good, calm, and focused within seconds. not only can she improve moods and ease anxiety, but she can also bring those in a state of panic to a state of calm. the downside to her quirk is that the more she uses it ( ie. the longer she uses it or the more people she uses it on at a time, ) the more she depletes her own serotonin levels, causing a chemical imbalance within her that drives her to a deep depression. the longer it’s used, the longer she’s using her quirk, the worse she’ll feel as a result.
at first glance, her quirk only has applications for search-and-rescue type missions, or dealing with victims during crises, but after honing her quirk during her years at ua, sumiye was able to go further beyond ( plus ultra! ) the basic abilities of her skill.
with training, she was able to learn how to regulate her own serotonin levels to extend the length of time before her levels began dropping from use of her quirk-- in addition, she was able to push people beyond the point of a normal happiness / calm and begin using her quirk as an offensive ability; sumiye learned how to drive people to hypomania & mania, making those affected unstable. in addition, sumiye is able to use a skill of her quirk that sends her into a particularly deep depression after use-- she can actually cause serotonin toxicity, which can cause seizures and rhabdomyolysis ( extensive muscle breakdown ) among other effects.
as a ‘final’ move, so to speak, if she is able to raise a person’s serotonin high enough and fast enough, the person can experience a sort of antidepressant discontinuation / withdrawal symptom-- in other words, she can both ‘overdose’ someone on serotonin before forcing them into withdrawal-like symptoms from lack of being affected by her quirk.
note : sumiye, even without her quirk, suffers from natural depression. it is part of the reason she does not enjoy using her quirk unless needed after she ended up dropping out of ua.

a random series of hcs discussed between me & @nonterrae :
sumiye and shouta were childhood friends
the takenaka family and aizawa family were equally respectable families that did business together frequently
sumiye’s twin brother, yoshiaki, idolized shouta’s older brother, roka
sumiye’s acceptance into ua was primarily because of her high written exam scores-- however, her rescue points in the practical portion of the exam were enough to grant her access into the hero department
during her first year sports festival, sumiye got through to the 1-on-1 matches due to her skill in the early teamwork-based trials. in round one, she was matched against her brother in what was a highly anticipated matchup-- unconventional quirks being showcased in front of all of japan.
the fight became a battle of who could overwhelm the other’s emotions first-- sumiye used her quirk to try and increase her brother’s emotions to a manic state, while yoshiaki used his quirk to try and send her into a severe depression. yoshiaki already had experience acting and fighting in a manic state, so her gambit only worked in his favor. he toyed with her throughout the fight before knocking her out with a final punch
yoshiaki was scouted by the agency run by the aizawa family, and spent his internship with them-- sumiye instead had to choose from one of the 40 agencies accepting any student that wasn’t scouted
when it came time to choosing hero names, yoshiaki had long since chosen the great depression as his name. sumiye, upon standing in front of the class, passed out before she could announce her chosen hero name as sun lamp
when sumiye dropped out of school, it took her nearly a year before she finally got a job with the commission due to her aunt hiring her as the phone operator
sumiye and shouta married in private when he was 20 and she was 22. although she was added to his family register without issue, they held an extremely private ceremony including hizashi and sakae. due to her position with the commission, it was against commission policies for a worker to be in a relationship with a pro hero-- it was considered a conflict of interest which could lead to favoritism or unfair treatment towards the partner, both things which could shake the public’s faith in the commission
after their marriage, both of them wear their rings, yet they refuse to tell people who their spouse is
during the first few months of their marriage, sumiye visited the agency shouta worked at during lunch for ‘commission meetings’ where they would simply eat lunch together
five years into their marriage, sumiye became pregnant and had twins, who they named kameko ( girl ) and shoma ( boy ).they still upheld the secrecy of their relationship from people, but they moved into a slightly bigger apartment than their previous one-room to fit the twins
sumiye was at the usj incident, acting as a stand-in due to all might’s absence. she’d been at the school on business for the commission when she offered to go with them. she was pregnant at the time
when the villains attacked, sumiye used her quirk to help calm the students and keep them less afraid
in the aftermath of the usj incident, sumiye and shouta’s relationship was officially made public. because of this, sumiye was fired from her job with the commission as penalty for breaking policy
sumiye later gave birth to a boy, who they named junichi
with the truth now out, once the students were being moved onto campus, shouta petitioned for sumiye and the twins and junichi to be moved on as well-- with his run-ins with the league of villains ( as well as sumiye’s own from the usj incident, ) it was agreed that the safest place for the family would be at ua
for a new job following the loss of her position at the commission, sumiye began working at the school under recovery girl-- despite her lack of pro status or lack of completed high school training, she was able to provide mental health support for students alongside chiyo’s physical support

sumiye + being a mom
when sumiye was in high school, she always assumed she was terrible with kids or would be a terrible mom. mainly this was because she was in such a deep depression and couldn’t imagine being around kids, much less raising them-- but truthfully, she was always great with children. as she got older, she realized her worry stemmed more from a fear of being like her own mother ( and father ) than from her depression alone; and by the time she became pregnant with the twins, although the fear still lingered, it was mostly gone.
sumiye, much like she is with the ua kids, wants to be the sort of person she needed growing up-- she wants her children ( naturally or adopted or otherwise ) to feel loved and safe; she wants her kids to be comfortable coming to her about things, and she doesn’t use her quirk against them unless she feels it absolutely necessary ( or in some instances if they ask. ) as someone who has been used by others for her quirk as a quick pick-me-up, she doesn’t want her children to grow used to the feeling it provides, or expect to receive it every time they feel a negative emotion; she understands the difference between atypical thoughts/emotions and neurotypical emotions, and focuses on providing a safe space for her children to feel comfortable talking about their feelings and thoughts. she doesn’t force them to talk, or make them feel guilty for not telling things if they aren’t ready to-- so long as they aren’t in danger, she recognizes the importance of giving them time.
if the kids come to her in confidence to tell her something, unless she feels it’s too important to keep quiet, she won’t tell aizawa what they told her; it’s not a matter of keeping secrets from each other or lying, but a continued method of trying to keep building that trust that she never felt with her own parents. she didn’t feel comfortable going to them with her simple problems, and she certainly didn’t feel comfortable going to them with her bigger, more personal problems. she doesn’t want to be a cool mom, she wants to be a trusted mom.

sumiye + about
name : aizawa takenaka sumiye
age : 33
position : sole telephone operator for the hero public safety commission, mental health assistant to recovery girl at ua
quirk : at its core, sumiye’s quirk acts as a fast-acting antidepressant– she is able to force a person’s body to produce serotonin at levels that affect the brain in a quick manner without overwhelming the body with an overload of serotonin
warnings for : mental health / mental illness, depression mentions, pregnancy mentions
sumiye’s history ties heavily with @quirkstopped 's aizawa blog and headcanons
born to parents takenaka kouki ( 25 ) and hanae ( 23 ) , sumiye came into the world alongside her fraternal twin brother, yoshiaki. their parents, well-known politicians and socialites, raised them in a world surrounded by only the best and brightest– including the aizawa family. sumiye’s parents interacted often with them, which led to her and yoshiaki befriending the two boys, roka and shouta– while yoshiaki idolized and trailed after the older of the two siblings, sumiye found herself becoming fast friends with the younger.
at the age of 5, both sumiye and yoshiaki began showing signs of their quirks– while yoshiaki was able to affect others’ moods negatively, sumiye was able to make others feel happy: an interesting contrast from her own strange moods. from an early age, sumiye suffered from undiagnosed depression; her parents, refusing to believe one of their children had something ‘wrong’ with them, wouldn’t take her to a doctor to get the help she needed. and so she grew up, struggling with the depression caused naturally due to her body’s chemical imbalances as well as additional depression caused by both her quirk as well as her brother’s. as the two grew older and yoshiaki grew to understand his own quirk, he was quite the bully towards sumiye, the only person he could get away with being cruel to.
throughout elementary school, sumiye had trouble making friends and getting through her classes– she had little energy and was oblivious to the fact that yoshiaki was almost nearly constantly sapping what little serotonin her body already produced. her only friend as she grew older was shouta. as she moved into middle school with yoshiaki, who’d already set his sights on becoming a hero to follow after roka, sumiye struggled with trying to decide what she wanted from her own future– it was actually because of shouta’s own desire to become a pro hero that she even considered it; wanting to be able to stay close to the childhood friend who’d helped her through so much when her own family wouldn’t even raise a finger, sumiye began studying hard, applying herself in her classes, and pushing herself to levels she could only dream about before.
it all culminated in her taking part in the entrance exam for ua’s hero department– she passed the written exam with a high score, and although her villain score was low, her rescue score was very high in the practical; she’d been able to use her quirk to help calm other department hopefuls when they found themselves in trouble. the mountain conquered, sumiye had found herself at the top– she did what she’d set out to do; she’d been accepted into the program. ( she was assigned to class 1-b, while yoshiaki was assigned to class 1-a. )
however, just because one mountain is conquered doesn’t mean the rest of the dream comes easy– although she’d found enough energy and motivation to make the effort to get into the school, she soon found herself struggling again with her depression, with her anxiety, and she started to do poorly in school. although she did well in team excercises where she could use her quirk to benefit others, she was otherwise considered a loner, unable to make friends due to her gloomy nature.
during her first year sports festival, sumiye was paired up against her brother, yoshiaki, in a one-on-one match– it was a well-anticipated match-up once announced, due to the combination of them being siblings as well as having unconventional quirks when it came to combat; it became a battle of speed in a sense, both she and yoshiaki attempting to overwhelm the other with their quirk. sumiye had done her best to drive yoshiaki to a state of hypomania by overwhelming him with serotonin, which unfortunately backfired due to yoshiaki operating in a near-constant state of hypomania for several years. yoshiaki then finished the fight by forcing sumiye into a deep depression using his quirk before knocking her out cold with a well-placed punch. after the events of the festival, sumiye wasn’t scouted by any agencies, and so she had to choose one from the list of those accepting un-scouted students.
in her second year, sumiye actually began dating a fellow student from class 1-b– shinao mori, a boy who she’d always thought was nice to her, asked her out and before she could think to say no, she agreed. they dated throughout most of her second year, only to break up when mori realized she’d been using her quirk on him in an attempt to make him not realize just how miserable a person she was. when he found out, he publicly broke up with her in front of the class, and word quickly spread about how she was manipulating people to like her ( even if that wasn’t the case. )
although some of her troubles lessened with the arrival of shouta ( in his first year ) during her third year, sumiye still struggled hard with keeping up in class. she was eventually given special tutoring classes with her brother, yoshiaki, but after feeling worse and worse ( yoshiaki had secretly been using the sessions to absorb serotonin from her to make himself feel better, ) she eventually dropped out of school all together. now at an all-time-low, sumiye struggled trying to find a job willing to take a high school dropout with no real job experience– it wasn’t until she was offered a job with the hero public safety commission from her aunt, takenaka michi, the president of the commission, that she finslly got a chance. she was placed as the sole operator of the phone queue, where her job consisted of answering phones and listening to complaints and concerns of people regarding hero interactions with the public.
since breaking up with mori in high school and onward, sumiye had actually been dating shouta– and when she was 22, ( and he 20, ) the two married in secret. due to her position with the commission, it was against policy for her to be in a relationship with a pro hero as it could result in favoritism and unfair treatment while doing reports and responding to concerns. the two wore rings, yet refused to tell those who asked the truth as to who exactly they were married to. five years after their marriage, sumiye became pregnant with twins– she eventually had a boy and a girl, named shoma and kameko.
at the start of the series, sumiye is still working at the commission, her relationship and children still a mystery to most everyone with the exception of a few chosen people– it isn’t until the kidnapping of bakugo during the forest training camp arc, after the press conference, that she and aizawa get discovered, and the truth of their relationship gets out. in order to appear that they are taking the matter seriously, sumiye’s aunt fired her as a result. with the moving of the students onto campus, sumiye and the children also moved in to live on campus with shouta, and she eventually got a job working under recovery girl, helping with mental illness problems in contrast to chiyo’s physical healing.

so i’ve been trying to figure out sumiye’s personal style for a while, and i’ve finally settled on it-- she’s never been one for fashion, she’s a mom-on-the-go, and partly because of her body image concerns, she tends to dress in baggy, comfortable clothes. something that she doesn’t care if it gets dirty, something that washes easily, something she can throw on and go about her day. her hair is really long, so she ties it up a lot to keep it out of the way.

sumiye + honorifics
when talking to people, sumiye addresses them in one of four ways:
using ( surname ) -san or -sama ( for strangers or people she deeply respects )
she refers to her aunt, the president of the hero public safety commission, as shachō due to her role as commission president, instead of oba or obasan
she has never called her parents okaasan or otoosan or any variation of the words. she has only ever referred to them as kouki-san and hanae-san, as she was raised to do. it is perhaps unusual for her to refer to them so formally, but they were never ones to encourage familiarity
using ( surname ) -kun or -chan ( for students )
she refers to students as -kun and -chan instead of -san, not as a means to infantilize them, but more as a familial term of endearment; of course she respects the kids, and if they would prefer she address them as -san, she would do so. but her usual way of referring to them is always with -kun or -chan
using ( given name ) -kun or -chan ( for friends )
to people she considers close enough as friends, yet not close enough to go full-on yobisute with, she’ll call them by their given name followed by -kun or -chan
not using them at all ( for extremely close friends and family )
this one is reserved for her ( actual ) kids and shouta, as well as friends she’s known for a very long time. even while pretending to not be married to him, though, she was referring to him without honorifics, which tended to raise eyebrows even after she explained that she’s known him since they were kids

sumiye + money
so, now that i’ve been thinking about crazy rich asians, it’s got me thinking about sumiye and her family’s social / financial status
the takenaka family, particularly her parents, are a wealthy family. even her aunt, as president of the commission, makes a hefty amount-- to put it into perspective, her parents can make roughly ¥41,000,000 or about $380,000 a year. ( this is including bonuses, perks, amenities, etc. )
that’s each.
so together, they’re pushing around ¥82,000,000 ( $760,000 ) a year.
sure, when they were younger and sumiye and yoshiaki were born, they weren’t making as much, but they both came from similarly comfortable families, a long line of politicians and government workers and heads of businesses-- even before the first quirk, the takenaka family was very well-off, and they adapted very well with the rise of quirk abilities.
so, as sumiye grew up, she grew up in a large family home, one of many owned by the takenaka clan; her family only associated with other well-to-do families, other people in high-end hero work, or business, or politics-- they were a people who knew people, well-connected and always surrounded by important people and present at important events. the movers and shakers of modern-day japan, as it were.
sumiye and yoshiaki were sent to the best schools, given the best lessons-- they were thrust into the limelight at an early age as the twin children of diet members kouki and hanae. yoshiaki did well with the attention, thrived on it-- sumiye, however, was not so fortunate. despite the money her parents put into her outfits, her education, her etiquette tutoring, none of it could make her into someone who wanted to be in those sorts of places. none of it could make her not depressed, despite their ‘best’ attempts at ‘fixing’ her.
when she dropped out of ua, her parents cut off all finacial ties to her; she was expected to get her own job, her own place, and provide for herself-- her parents couldn’t bear the shame of having such a failure associated with the great takenaka name. with such a negative connotation associated with money since growing up, sumiye is not much for material possessions or wealth; as long as she has her family, and her small group of friends, then she’s happy. she doesn’t need ( or want ) to be the smartest person, the richest person, the most glamorous person-- she just wants her family to be happy, and that’s all.

sumiye’s body type is very soft-- she works in an office, has had three children, and although she works out from time to time, she is not as active as she was when she was back in high school working towards being a hero. her sides, stomach, and hips are her softer areas, in addition to her upper arms; her ass and thighs, however, are much more toned-- she does a cycle class with @craneguard which helps keep these parts in tighter form.
