nanowrimo meme, day 14

DAY 14 - Is the sexuality of your characters a large part of your novel’s story? If so, are there characters who deviate from the heterosexual “norm”? In what way?

yes! lgbt+ representation is important to me, so expect queer themes to crop up in many of my stories. off the top of my head, chika from @/bootlcg is pan, kaizou from Kassen Dori is bi, and satoshi from Poisoned Paradise is trans, all of whom are out and whose identity is part of their character without being the focus of the plot. i also have a handful of closeted characters, as well as a couple of characters whose stories are centred around being queer, though they haven’t had as much screentime yet.

DAY 5 - Name two songs from your playlist that you feel are connected with your novel in some way, and explain how they are.

this one was surprisingly hard to do! if i find music that suits my stories, it’s by coincidence - i don’t go searching because idk what to look for. because of that, i’m gonna list songs for fics i’ve already got spotify playlists for:

Holding out for Friday: “stand in the rain” by superchick & “quiet” by lights.

‘stand in the rain’ is a song about fear and learning to withstand it, which becomes a core concept in Holding out for Friday once things start going downhill. this is especially on-the-nose once the primal kyogre plot kicks in, as ayaka has to endure freak rainstorms, as well as the pressure of being the one who has to stop them.

‘quiet’ also references the struggles aya has to face, both internally and externally, but has a much softer outlook, reflecting how much she values quality time with her best friend brendan. however muddled her feelings towards him get, she wants to chill out with him more than anything. his presence helps balance her anxieties, and she gives him company. they’re good for each other.

going into Kassen Dori, i hadn’t planned for kaizou to catch feelings, but here we are! ily ash. for those of you who haven’t read the rp or didn’t pick up on my subtext (i wouldn’t blame you lmao – most of it was in pm anyway), kaizou starts crushing on the shsl screenwriter oliver waters, and i was sure that one of them would die before kaizou outright said “i like you”. if oliver was the one to die, i was undecided on whether this would be the trigger for kaizou accepting that the killing game was real, or if it’d bury him further in denial, so i consider 'grande finale’ his bare innermost thoughts. basically, he’d be willing to put up less fronts if it meant being with oliver in any capacity, though tragedy would have to strike for him to admit this to himself due to his personality complex. i’m a big fan of what the mods gave me to work with in that department, to the point where i’ll have to write a character analysis to fully explain kaizou’s psychology, so remind me to link that here when it’s done!

then on the much simpler side of the spectrum, ‘young and menace’ sums kaizou up in two adjectives ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
