so now that i’ve fully finished watching the new episode and that i’ve stopped screaming myself hoarse about my bull boy, time to BITCH ABOUT IT B)

first of all that scene with the hound in the cells at eastwatch.  i cannot fucking BELIEVE that gendry didn’t have more to say other than ‘hurr they’re the brotherhood you can’t trust em’ like. the hound was THERE. the hound who literally stole arya away, arya a little girl he was meant to protect, arya who had watched the hound survive the trial by combat and who had gnashed her teeth and fought him to get at, ARYA GODDAMN STARK HIS FIRST AND ONLY FRIEND WHO WAS TAKEN FOR RANSOM BY THE HOUND and all gendry had to say was “i met you once” or w/e it was like

don’t touch me i’m sO SALTY

also there’s no mention of arya at all??

i mean if he knows who jon is he knows that arya is his sister because he knows NED STARK IS HER FUCKING FATHER SO LIKE WE DON’T EVEN GET A ‘HEY IS YOUR SISTER NOT DEAD OR WHAT’ from him about his FIRsT AnD onLY fRIENd

and i’m SORRY but gendry might be stupid bullheaded bastard boy but he DOES have enough fucking sense to keep his mouth shut when it MATTERS again bringing it back to arya but like he wouldn’t have said THIS IS ARYA STARK NED STARK’S DAUGHTER so why the FUCK would he be so ready to be like HEY WHAT’S UP I’M ROB BARATHEON’S BASTARD LET’S GO FUCK SHIT UP

You’re welcome!  And no worries about hurrying, lol; the books are very dense and at times slow-moving.  I’ve just read them too many times to count and the bastards are my favorite characters because they're just so varied and unique!  If you ever want to chat about the books or have questions about something that happens as you read you can hit up my IM

Yes! It’s mostly book information, but in Westeros, if you are the son of a highborn lord, or in Gendry’s case, king, and your father recognizes you as his son, then you inherit the last name of the region you were born in, i.e., Snow for the North, Storm, Rivers, Sand, Flowers, Pyke, Stone, Hill,  or, in Gendry’s case, Waters.  Jon is Jon Snow and not just Jon because Ned claimed him as his own, which means he gets a last name.   I think that only two of Robert’s bastards are actually recognized by him, Mya Stone and Edric Storm, which is why Gendry doesn’t have a last name.  And bastards without a surname are considered lower-class because it is presumed they weren’t born to a highborn.  Bastards born to a peasant family would also bear no surname.  It’s a way of marking their shame and making sure that everyone knows they aren’t legitimate or that they aren’t a threat to anyone’s power :)  It’s also why the dichotomy between him and Arya is so interesting because he’s “too bloody lowborn to be kin to m’lady high” but IF HE ONLY KNEW. 

It also plays into his self-loathing a lot.  He’s a baseborn bastard, and he doesn’t think that he and Arya can ever REALLY be friends, because insofar as Westerosi culture is concerned, he doesn’t exist save to SERVE highborns.  He is nothing and no-one and he’s WELL-AWARE of his place.  I can only imagine what life was like growing up for him in King’s Landing and at how he must have been treated.  Thank the gods for Tobho Mott taking him in and Ned finding him before Joff ordered the execution of all of Robert’s bastards is all I have to say.
